The trial period was over for the MS Office 2007 trial that came preloaded on my new computer, so I bought and activated the MS Office Home and Student 2010 product key. Afterwards, I had been able to open and edit Word, Powerpoint, etc documents.

I recently uninstalled the MS Office 2007 trial that was on my new computer to try to get rid of "junk" that was taking up space. Now, I can't open open any of the existing documents I have saved on my desktop or anywhere else. The only way I can even save and open a document is to open the (for example) Word 2010 app, make a new document and save it to desktop, and then open the Word 2010 app, File, Open and open it from there.

The message I get when I try to open a document is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Defaults Programs control panel."

I tried to do that and change .doc file type so that the current default of "Unknown application" would change so it would open with MS Office Virtualization Handler and when I tried to open a word document on my desktop, it wouldn't open. After more fiddling, now, I have (word) documents opening with 2 different applications, WordPad, and Microsoft Works Word Processor (.doc associated with Microsoft Works Word Processor, .docx associated with WordPad).
First, how do I undo this?????

Second, why wouldn't my documents open in the first place (before I did anything in control panel)?????

Please help me before my brothers find out actually want to do homework on the computer!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Can't Open MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, etc) Documents

Things got messed up as you uninstalled the trial version after installing the Home and Student version.
You may need to remove the H and S version and reinstall it.

Just bought new laptop with windows 7. I have transferred all the folders/files from my old laptop which I inherited from the company I used to work for. I cannot transfer the Microsoft office suite to my new laptop - the licence would have expired by now any way. In order for me to be able to open, view and work on the files I intend to transfer I'm guessing I will need to buy and install Microsoft Office onto my new laptop... as all the documents are encrypted or gobbledegook....so am I correct? If so - are there any provisos in regards the old documents opening with no problems on my new laptop once I've installed Microsoft Office? Thanks

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Then I tool the FA... Read more

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing.

So I logged onto my laptop to work on my university assignment some more, and poof, it won't open.
I keep getting the same error every time.

I can open the file in WordPad but I just get fifteen pages of ">:?:%<":?&:"
I can open it in OpenOffice but the formatting all changes, headers/footers disappear, images disappear, text boxes containing quotes aren't there.

I copied the Open Office version into a new blank Word page; and filled in the blanks (which took me an hour) but when I saved and opened the file; I got the same error.

Hoping it was me doing something wrong with the way I saved it or the default program to open it, I repeated the process taking up another hour; but I'd done it right, and got the same error code.

The default program to open it is Office 2003, the same format I made/saved the replacement file in.
It makes no sense to me. Also, why now? What changed? It was working fine yesterday.
Not done any downloads or scans so I don't know what the changed factor is.

Please can anyone help me, these assignments are dawning upon me and I need to get my finishing touches done before I can submit them, I also don't want to risk submitting a faulty file.

Thank you so much!

Hi,
I can not open ms Word documents by double-clicking on them anymore, When ever I do so I get a mesage saying: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
I do get the Word window open but there is nothing in it. I have tried this with .doc, .docx and .txt files and I get the same thing.
But I can open files if I first open word and then go to Open and select a document from there, but not by double clicking.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and Microsoft Office Word 2007, can anyone help me?

Answer:Can not open documents in Microsoft Office Word 2007

Open Word, go to the Office Orb, then Resources, and then "Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

This will check out the install and do a repair if needed. You will need to the "Office cache" file on the hard drive or have the Office CD handy, if it is needed.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can suggest a fix for this...

I'm running XP Pro with SP2 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 notebook. For about a year now, every time I boot up my computer or click on a Word, Excel or Powerpoint document to open it, I small window titled "Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage" opens, containing the message
"Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage"

Then another window opens, telling me "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in the box below." and there's a 'Use Source' field with a dropdown menu, as well as Browse, OK and Cancel buttons.

When I click on Cancel, a third window appears with the message "Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Office 10\1033\SETUP.HLP." but that's just a help article titled Troubleshooting Installation from Compact Disc Media, which I'm not trying to do...

I'm running Windows 7 on my new computer, which came with a trial version of Office 2010. Rather than buy the full version when the trial expired, I installed the Office 2003 I had on my old -- now dead -- computer. I now find that I can't open the Word and Excel files I created with the 2010 version. Is there a 'cloud' site where I could send the 2010 files and have them returned to me as standard .xls and .doc files? Or is there a free converter available for download?

I recently installed Microsoft Office 2013 and now when I click on a Word DOC or a PowerPoint slide presentation created in my previous Office edition (2010) I get a dialogue indicating that Windows can't open the DOCX file and asking if I want to use the Web or an installed program to open the file. I downloaded Microsoft's Compatibility Viewer for Word 2007, but I got the same dialogue box. Is there a program that can convert all of the Word DOCX and PowerPoint entries that I have at one time? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Did you install Office 2013 or the Office 365 version?

Also did you uninstall a earlier version?

I am at work on one of the computers on their network. This machine is used my three or four people so how the problem started is just a guess. Word, Excel, Powerpoint all open with "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional." If I try to open any file I created in the past, the same thing happens. I thought I would run scanreg but apparently that command does not work. Lost, and my boss is too cheap to call in a tech, so I am stuck with no word processing. I am typing this on line however with the machine in question. Any ideas? Thanks. (The signature below is my machine at home)

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, running Office XP, and I use Microsoft Office Professional 2002. (I bought this computer in 2002)

I have been having a problem for several weeks, ever since I had a number of viruses and other bad things going on with my computer which have since been resolved.

I can't open documents that I had previously created with Microsoft Office. (Word and Excel) When I try to do so, I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says "requesting virus scan" and a timer comes up, but then nothing happens.

I have tried a number of things, including uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office Professional, going to the Help Menu (Detect and Repair) when I open Excel or Word, and nothing works. I was having trouble even opening Word...it would only open in Safe mode every other time I tried to open it, until I read another helpful hint in this forum today about renaming normal.dot. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with this problem as I am pulling my hair out.

I had someone come to help me clean out my computer when I was having all my problems several weeks ago, and he was not able to figure this one out, either.

I have a machine where the user needs to have their powerpoint documents that are clicked on in Internet Explorer, open in powerpoint, however they are opening in Internet Explorer in slideshow view. The user has Office 2010 and I have tried an office diagnostics repair and also tried adjusting the .ppt and .pptx file type properties to verify that power point is set to open them. I looked for settings in IE and powerpoint but found nothing related to this. How can I force powerpoint to open these documents when clicked in IE instead of having IE open them.

Answer:Powerpoint documents open in IE and not powerpoint.

Try downloading and saving the file to your PC. Then navigate to the file, right click > Open with > Choose Program.Click "Select the program from a list" > Click OKIn that list, find Powerpoint. (If it's not there, click browse and find it that way)Click it, and then click the checkbox underneath that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"Click OK. The file will open in powerpoint. Close that off then try opening a file from IE again. It should work.PEBMAC - The biggest cause of Computing problems.Damn ID10T Errors.

I updated my OS (currently has Windows XP SP3) with all updates, reinstalled Office 2003, installed Office 2003 SP 3 and then reinstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

I still get the same message when I try to open an Office 2007 attachment in Outlook 2003.

OS is Windows XP SP3 fully updated
Office 2003 SP 3 fully updated

Any suggestions?

I tried to google around but all I found was people getting this error message when they tried to open hyperlinks in outlook which I doubt is related to my problem.

I guess a clean install of the OS would do the trick but I'd rather not go there.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Is your computer on a domain?

If so, you could contact your IT admin to see what restrictions they have placed on your account.

A clean install would mean re-installing all your programs including Powerpoint.

Answer:Solved: open office/microsoft word

You got it save it as a Word Document in Open Office. If you opened it and then resaved it in Open Office it may have saved it as an Open Office file type instead of a Microsoft Word File Type. I know there is a way to make Open Office to default to saving as a Word Document. Just look thru the settings. So your first step to investigate is too see what file type OpenOffice is saving as by default.

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

Answer:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

Suddenly, all of my Open Office word processing documents converted into Microsoft Word documents. This literally happened overnight and I have no idea how it happened. The starter kit for Microsoft Office came already on my laptop but I never purchased any of the four programs in the suite. How can I convert them all back to Open Office docs without having to open them up in Word? (The Microsoft Office starter kit gives you something like 20 free "opens" for Microsoft Word but then you have to buy it.) Any help would be truly appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Open office files all turned into word docs! Help!

Hi Roy,

most likely what has happened is that Windows has somehow assigned ODT files to Word.

First, check whether the extensions of the files are still ODT. For this you need to switch off the option "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options of Windows Explorer (Tools, Folder Options, View). You can now see whether the files have a .ODT or a .DOC extension.

If they are still .ODT, do a right-click on one of them while holding the Shift key and choose "Open With...". Now you check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and locate "swriter" in the list above. If swriter is not there, you'll need to click on Browse and locate it on your hard disc, probably in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\program\

After doing this, .ODT files will always be opened by OpenOffice.org, and the icon will also change accordingly.

If the file extensions are actually .DOC, and you don't use Office, you can use the same trick to assign .DOC files to OpenOffice. Then when you modify one of these .DOC files, don't just Save them, but use "Save As" to save them as .ODT files.

All this is assuming you use Windows XP... I don't know how assigning file types works in Vista...

My computer did some sort of restore yesterday. I'm not sure exactly what happened. My son was looking at the computer trying to fix a problem with the audio because nothing I tried had worked. (No sound and computer wasn't giving me access to control panel.) When he gave me back the computer, everything was gone. I have the Lenovo apps, my personal files and I managed to get Windows back to what I think is an 8.1 version. (minimal changes to what I had) What I still need desperately is to find my Microsoft Software that came loaded on the computer..Excel, Word, Powerpoint ,etc. My ex says it might be on a "partition". Don't know what that is or how to get there. Help.

Answer:How do I get back Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Powerpoint?

If you do not have the disc but you have the genuine product key for Office 2007 you can download and install it from HERE.i_Xp/Vista/W7User

I am using Microsoft word starter 2010.When I save a document created,I can see it and open it in 'recent documents'.However when I go into my ordinary saved documents folder and try to open it,nothing happens?

Answer:Cannot open word documents in Microsoft Word starter 2010

Try one or both of these:Right click on the icon and select 'Open'.Right click on the icon and select 'Open With" and select Word or Word 2010 from the list. If you also check off "Always use this program" and it works, you have fixed the problem since it may have been trying to open it with another program and it could not. Now you have designated the default program for that file type (.doc or .docx).You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi am new to this dont know if anyone can help. We have had pc for around 3 years and recently it has stopped opening word 2003 and powerpoint. Our system is xp and I have downloaded from microsoft site things to fix it but nothing seems to work. Even paid for a registry cleaner but although it seemed to improve some aspects of pc it hasn't helped the problems with word documents or powerpoint. Driving us mental have spent best part of a week on websites looking for help. Not very pc literate but will have a go if directions are suitable for a 2 year old. Thanks, Hazy.

Answer:cant open word, powerpoint etc

Try this ...

Go to Add and Remove Programs, single click on the entry for Microsoft Office
Click the button Change
You should now see several choices ... I would try Repair first.

You may need the CD to hand.

QUESTION AND HELP NEEDED: Quite some time ago I was helped with getting a program that would make Open Office Impress work like PowerPoint in doing a presentation so that what I see on my computer screen displays the notes that are needed for what I want to say along with a picture of what is being displayed on the big screen for the audience. This was working fine until just recently and it no longer will do this. I don't remember the name of the program or how to get this working again. When I right click on my desktop, I am able to usually bring up something that allows me to choose "graphic options" which allows me to choose "clone displays" or what gets it into what I described above through "extended desktop/display + monitor". What do I need to do to get this working again? As is, it just doesn't show me my notes on my computer screen.--Warrensbro

I just bought this laptop, which comes with Office 2010 Starter. For those who don't know, the "Starter" means that you have to buy the product key in order to activate the Office programs. Well, I have lots of documents in Word 2007, but I don't have the installation disk for Office 2007 anymore. I also have plenty of documents in Word 2000, and I do have the installation disk for Office 2000. Will 2000 work okay with 2007 stuff? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Can Word 2000 open Word 2007 documents?

They don't go 'backwards,' meaning that you will need to get a compatibility pack. Here's a link.

LOL I have the same problem, but I downloaded Open Office.org and found it to address 99% of my needs. Free and it runs Office, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. They aren't exactly perfect but if you start a doc in one of these, you can finish it up in the MS Office version. Best of all, it was free. Good luck! Glad to be able to help and give back a little to this fantastic community that has saved me TONS of $$ and time (the gray hairs I blame on the computer!!)

Hi,

Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Other info:
Outlook 2007 works ok, no delays
Windows XP works ok
No speed issues with computer
Did not previously have Office 2003
Word/Excel documents are local, computer is not on a network
Computer is free from spyware and viruses

Hi All,
I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.
At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:
What do you want to do with "filename"?
The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.
Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.
I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?
Thanks

I'm having 4 problems.

Rundll window at start up:
Error Loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\Drivers\W32X86\3\DLCQtime.dll

This specifiec module could not be found.
When I double click on Word documents, a Window Installer box opens and says 'preparing to install' with a cancel button. Then, a Microsoft Office Edition 2003 box opens:
Installation Error:File not Found

A required installation file SKU112.CAB cound not be found
It then asks if installed from a cd to insert it or if downloaded from the internet to browse your system and find it. I don't have any Office 2003 cd's. The cd's I have that I think are for my Word documents are Microsoft Works Suite 2000.
My last year vacation pictures will not open. When double-clicking on them, an Adobe Photoshop Album window opens with the words 'failed to load photo'.
My memory about a year ago was about half free. It is now showing I have 2 GB.
I tried going back and restoring my computer in hopes of being able to access my pictures. I've ran spybot. That's all I knew to do. I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002. ~tmcc

I got infected two days ago on April 2nd, 2014.
I'm using F-Secure and I got a warning message that I was infected by a virus.
Since then I got pop-ups and annoying links from Remarkit and Freeven, and my start page was hijacked by Webs Serches. But the worst thing was that I was unable to open Word or PowerPoint.

After following the guides on Malware Tips, I have removed the pop-ups, banners and sponsored links, and the start page has been reset in Chrome and Internet Explorer (I haven't installed Firefox on this PC). But I still can't open Word or PowerPoint. I am able to open docx files in WordPad, however.

I don't get any error messages when I try to open a file in Word or PowerPoint, I just get the "busy" mouse cursor for a few seconds, and then nothing happens. I had no problems opening documents in Word or PowerPoint before I got infected.

I really need to be able to use Word on my computer, and I'm grateful for any help I can get.
Thanks.

Excel Failed to start correctly last time. Starting Excel in safe mode will help you correct or isolate a startup problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.

Do you want to start Excel in safe mode?

If I click yes or no it doesn't do anything, (on occasion Ill get a message prompting to diagnose and repair, a couple of minutes later it says i's successful but back to square one)

I have just installed SP1 in hopes there's some sort of fix, to no avail
I have tried a repair via the installation disc
I am hoping I don't have to uninstall / reinstall because I don't know if the licenses are limited

If anyone could shed some light on how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it!

Any ideas on what else to do, to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I currently am setting up 4 new PCs for my workplace. They are runnin Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. I am having issues with MS Office 07. 2 of the PCs run all of the office programs fine. The other 2 will not open word or powerpoint. They just crash on startup. Both these computers are on a domain and the domain user has Admin privileges, however it still does not launch. When I log directly into the administrator account it does launch but if I go back to the domain user (with admin permissions) it fails to launch. I have read tons of forums and tried everything from the reinstalling, repairing, deleting the registry, deleting the normal.dot, running some registry commands and still nothing. I am out of ideas and curious as to why it would work fine on 2 of the PCs but not the other 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know there is plenty of info out there on this issue, but I have tried everything I can find and still no success.

I think your problems may have started the minute you upgraded instead of doing a clean install. Okay, so more work involved re-installing your applications, but it's the only way to go if you want the best chance of having a well-behaved and stable operating system. For one thing, some of those applications and drivers in your previous OS may not even be compatible with Windows 7 - did you check them all with Microsoft's compatibility website before doing the upgrade?http://www.microsoft.com/windows/co...

Hello all,

I have Office 2010 installed. I often print an online news article to the xps format. Sometimes I have the need to convert this format to Word.

The question is how do I make the conversion without using a free software. It is preferable to use a software that would retain the original format of the article.

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to help me find such a software.

Thank you.

Answer:How to convert MS xps documents to Word in Office 2010?

Try to convert XPS to a DOC* format is a complicated OCR task, same as trying to take a picture of an old newspaper and then trying to scan and make it editable in Word.

You need something like ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional Edition
It keeps original formatting as much as possible.

I use MS Office 2010 Word to write and save documents - but recently they are being saved as "OpenDocument Text" - and while I can open these documents using MS Word, some of the recipients cannot do so! I understand that "OpenDocument Text" refers to the free Open Office suite, which I do not have installed.
Something has changed!
So how can I ensure that when I compose a document it is saved, and able to be opened by those to whom I send it, only as an MS Word Document?

I just obtained an A55 ThinkCenter which had a 60-day trial of MS Office installed. I had no need nor wanted Office 2007.  Tried to install MS Word 2000. It installed without any problems, but it would not open completely and remained hung up. I used the Control Panel to uninstall MS Office 2007 and then MS Word 2000 worked. After I uninstalled Office I noticed that there were remnants of Office still installed. Does anyone know of a safe way to remove the rest of that Office Stuff? I also have another problem caused by that Office trial installation. When I receive Emails with PowerPoint attachments they cannot be opened in OutLook Express. Recently, I noticed that my Yoga2 Pro's display keeps blinking and flashing whenever I interchange from Adobe Reader to Google Chrome. The display will just turn black for 1 sec and turn back ON again. Same issue with Office software such as Powerpoint or Excel. If I just work on 1 program and don't interchange programs, the display will be fine. I am very sure it is a display driver issue and it occurs after Win 10 updates. Booting in Safemode also will prevent that problem from happening. The Display driver listed on this website is not working http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/YOGA-SERIES/YOGA-2-PRO-LENOVO/downlo... and will have the same issue with Intel 4400... I know that this model is obsolete and the warranty is expired. But this is obviously SW update/Driver issue with Win 10. Could someone from Lenvo help to fix this? Thanks a lot!

For the most part this thread has helped immensley. However I have installed MS Office 2007, and now I have options to create new PowerPoint, Word and Excell documents. How would I go about removing and restoring these?

Answer:Add or Remove create "New" PowerPoint, Word, and Excell documents

Microsoft's TweakUI (for XP) renames the ShellNew key:

It works on W7 too - but some patches or updates will change them back

If you play with this - and you rename it back to normal - then you might have to select the desktop and press F5 to refresh the context menu... or just restart the computer. If you ever do a repair of Office, they might come back too. One way to halt this is to make the keys read-only.

My guess is that there are several apps to pick from that will do this for you - I've just never gone hunting. I do it manually and I make them read-only. [Can you say "control freak"? :-]

Someone posted a similar problem before, but I don't know if the original author ever had a solution. I posted this on the Office Online board several days ago, but no one has answered yet.

Question from 8/27/08:

I'm using Word from Office Home And Student 2007 with Vista Home Premium. Word was working perfectly until about 5 days ago. I have not installed anything different. It used to show a counter where it was counting the words of the document and then the documant would open. Now it shows a blank screen with the counter at zero. The document itself is not empty. It still shows the appropriate number of kbs on the desktop.

I went online to try to diagnose, repair, and update. It told me that I had
all of the Microsoft updates. (By the way, this might or might not be
related, but other Microsoft updates keep asking me to download them even though they installed successfully.) I uninstalled and then re-installed Office Home And Student 2007 and by doing so I had to purchase a new product key since I misplaced the first one. Still nothing helped.

I did notice that if I clicked on the Microsoft icon in the upper lefthand
corner of the blank document, I could see a menu of my recent documents and even search in an explorer type of menu system. In that roundabout way I could open the files. But if I tried it the normal way, I still got the blank screen.

When I would close the blank document, it said Word has stopped working, that it was trying to recover th... Read more

I have Office 2000 and I like it, I moved it over to my new Windows 7 laptop and moved all my Word docs over and now I can't do a thing with my word files - they are all read only. Can anyone help me please?

Answer:Windows 7 Office 2000 All Word documents are read only - can you help

How did you move them? Did you copy therm to CD/DVD then copy them to the new computer?

The easiest way to fix this is to open an Elevated Command Prompt. Change to the Documents directory and run the following command:

attrib -r /s /d *.*

That will reset the Read Only attribute on all files and folders in the current directory and all sub directories.

Click on Start, type cmd. Right click on cmd.exe at the top of the list and select Run as Administrator.
Type cd \users\yourusername\documents and press Enter.
Type attrib -r /s /d *.* and press Enter.

In almost every case, Word documents open after about half a minute. I have tried various fixes, such as that offered by The Office Experts (www.theofficeexperts.com/), but to no avail. If anyone has any advice on how to solve this persistent problem, please advise.

I recently noticed that when I am saving a MS Word document the icon has changed. I am running windows 10 and MS Office Professional 2016. This only started happening within the past week. i tried doing a quick repair of MS Office and that did not solve the problem so I went back to the control panel and selected to do the online repair. However that has not fixed the problem. I have run malware and spyware scans and well as a full anti-virus scan and everything comes back clean and it is only happening with the MS Word documents - excel is fine and so is everything else. If I open a document that is a little older and then close it, it still looks the same as it always has, but any newly created documents look different now and other than Windows updates there have been no other changes to my computer.

The documents are saving properly and there is no issue with opening them, but they no longer show that W icon for the document

How to I resolve this issue if doing an online repair which uninstalls the program and then I need to reinstall it does not resolve the issue.
The image on the left is the way they have always looked and all of a sudden any documents I save are looking like the one on the right

I have long used Open Office, but recently I read in PC Advisor that Libre Office (derived from it)was better. However printing an envelope in Libre Office seems almost impossible. When the print order is given, the small text window to the left shows the wrong size, and when printing a DL envelope it clearly shows and gives the size of a B5 envelope. I did not make a mistake in selecting the correct size. Can anyone help and is this a problem with Libre Office?
Glen

Answer:Word Processing problem, Open Office and Libre Office

Glen
I have Libre Office version 3.6.3.2 and just tried to print a DL envelope and had no problems.
When I prepared the envelope, I went into Format/Page and selected DL Envelope. then Landscape. This set the paper size. I then typed the envelope with a return address on the top right side and the recipient address amid-ships. Put the envelope in the printer, long ways in and bingo.
As a matter of interest do you have to change the paper size in the printer properties? I didn't on mine. I also have to say that I am using a MAC, but the principles should be the same on a Windows machine.

Answer:cant open my word documents...

Do you have Microsoft word installed? Go to your Start Menu and look through your programs for a folder named Microsoft, Inside should be a program called Microsoft Word. If not, than you need to buy Microsoft Word, or download Open-office, just google it. It is a free alternative to Word, and it can open word. If you do have word than when that prompt comes back up than select "select program from list" and choose Microsoft Word. Good Luck , without computer for 6 days will check back then . And maybe someone here will help if you need further assistance.

Have run numerous and different virus scans and spyware programs and uninstalled, reinstalled, and repaired Office 2000 Professional. Tried to change the Normal.dot file. Nothing happened. Would appreciate any ideas on what to do next. Everything was running fine and the boom. I have been trying to solve this for 3 days. Should I do a system restore or could the problem be something else?

Here's my hijack file. I'd appreciate some advice.

Is there a program that converts files from either of those formats to the regular .doc that micrsoft office would read? It's really annoying not having a working cd key for office so I need something that can change it so I can send files to teachers etc and they can still read them

Answer:Convert Abi Word/Open Office to Microsoft Word compatible

The good new is yes...But, first: Verify that the converter is not already installed.

To see a list of installed converters that you can use to save documents, click Save as on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Save as type box.
To see a list of installed converters that you can use to open documents, click Open on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Files of type box.
If Word does not have your file format converter available there is additional good news...

Connect to the internet, Open Word, click on help, type converters and click search, then click Obtain file format converters and then click either one of the hyperlinks microsoft office resource kit or microsoft office.

NOTE: once you have the converter loaded word has a built in Batch Conversion Wizard click on help, search for "file conversion" and click Convert Documents then click convert several docs at once and follow the instructions

Hi, I'm running Windows XP and have Office 2000 installed. I use Internet Explorer 7. If I open IE 7 to browse the web and then try to open an Office document the Office program doesn't do anything, then eventually tells me it's "not responding." I have to reboot to get the documents to open. After reboot, as long as I don't open the internet, all Office documents open fine. Once I open the internet, I have to reboot before opening any Office documents. I've tried "repairing" Office 2000. No help. Any sugestions? Thanks!

Answer:Office documents won't open after opening IE 7

Yeah, I use Mozilla Firefox, I just don't use IE any more, once every eon (long time ). It's really to download just go to http://www.mozilla.org, I hope that helps!
Sorry I just don't use IE because of all the problems I had with it and this was at least 5 years ago. I keep it around because anything that is Microsoft word, excel, etc... programs doesn't allow Firefox to download from their website.
