move reading pane to middle outlook 2003

Question: move reading pane to middle outlook 2003

I have a user that somehow got the reading pane in the center/middle of oulook 2003.
I can only find out how to put it in the bottom, right, or off in the settings.
The only thing I found on google about this was this page...

Outlook 2003, Moving the Reading Pane to the Middle?
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Groupware/Outlook/Q_21846617.html

Wondering if anyone here knows the fix or do I have to register there?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm using Outlook 2003 (on Exchange) on an XP Pro machine. I have it configured to give me 2 email accounts. I have the reading pane activated on both accounts.

I used to be able to print (clicking the print icon or using the menu) from the reading pane without actually opening the email for each of the two accounts. Now, I can only do it from one of the accounts. The error message I get when I try to print from the second account is: "Message headers cannot be printed. Download the complete message and then print."

The fact that I used to be able to print from both, but now only from one leads me to believe I inadvertently changed a setting. Someone suggested it may be a security setting, but I have no idea.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have the reading pane activated in Outlook 2003. I've noticed that when any email is shown in the reading pane, the header information is followed by approximately 10 blank lines before the message text is shown. This happens regardless of the location of the reading pane (below or to the right). If I open the email, everything looks fine. The blank lines are annoying because I usually have to go to the reading pane and scroll down to see the entire message. I should also add that the blank lines are fixed, so when I scroll through the message the white space stays there and doesn't scroll. Any solutions? I'm running XP SP2.

Thanks,
Dave

Every time I create a new folder in Outlook 2003 the Reading Pane "Hide header information" option is enabled by default. I know I can select View / Arrange By / Custom / Other Settings and then uncheck the "Hide header" box, but this is tedious if I'm setting up several new folders.

According to Microsoft no global change can be made to this value in the Reading Pane. Does anyone know of a tweak or utility which can set the default to show the header in the Reading Pane view?

Is there a way to globally diable Outlook 2003's reading pane?

Answer:Disabling Outlook 2003's Reading Pane

Well, it USED to be that you could do a command line switch:

outlook.exe /nopreview

But I don't know if that still works in 2003.
And I don't know what you mean by globally--all views on one PC? all PCs?

For some reason, new mail in my Inbox now displays in the reading pane without the message headers (subject, from, to, etc.). Mail in all other folders displays the headers, and mail moved from my Inbox to any other folder displays the headers. I can't find a setting or option which would seem to address this. Any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Outlook 2003 reading pane not displaying message headers

Go to a folder with a "good" view.
Hit View-->Arrange By-->Current View-->Define Views. Copy *this* view and use it on your Inbox.

I can't seem to disable the "Reading Pane" in Outlook 2003. Under "View" > " Reading Pane " I get no response when clicking on "Reading Pane."

I am under the impression that it is a good idea to keep the Reading Pane "off" so as not to "open" automatically emails which may contain viruses.

Any suggestion, on how to turn off the Reading Pane in Outlook 2003 when my Reading Pane "switch" seems to be disabled, would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I just put in a new hard drive and installed the latest version of Office 2007. I kept the data and archive files from Outlook 2003 so I could import them into Outlook 2007 and get back to business. However, that did not happen. It was able to read and bring up most of the data, but I am missing some folders which are critical.

The critical folders are folders that were created manually. They were used to store email messages that came in that were important. They were simply dragged from the Inbox and put into that folder. There were also folders within that folder. I'm not sure if these folders and subfolders were in the Inbox or not. They may not have been.

The way I imported it was by going to TOOLS>ACCOUNT SETTINGS>DATA FILES tab>and pointed to the old PST file.

I also pointed to the archive.pst file as well, but later went to FILE>ARCHIVE and pointed to the old archive.pst file in there. Bot ways did not reveal the folders that are needed.

Is Outlook 2007 not able to read all data from Outlook 2003 pst files, or is there a fix for this?

Please advise.

Answer:Move from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 not successful; not reading certain folders

I purchased a new Notebook with Office 2007 installed and copied over my Outlook 2000 pst file. I also had manually created folders for filing important emails. Mine were sub folders within the Inbox folder. Everything copied over, but I could not see the manual folders at first until I double clicked the Inbox folder in the side panel and then they spilled out. I would look for them in that panel and double click anything there starting with Inbox, Sent etc. Also try doing a search for any subject or address of an email you may have saved.

When copying over the pst file I think everything is copied. Appears you did not just copy contacts for example, but the complete pst file. I think the folders are there as Sub Folders, just hidden within one of the main folders such as Inbox.

I'm using Windows XP, and I recently had a problem that required me to fix a registry problem by using the recovery console and re-installing restore points from several week's back. After doing this I had to reload IE version 8.

Everything appears to be normal now, except for one issue.

When I try to access my "work" email from home, using Outlook Web Access, it appears to hang before displaying my emails in the middle pane. The progress bar moves very slowly and never finishes. My "folders" are displayed properly (on the left pane) and this provides an indication that I have new emails, next to the Inbox icon. That is Inbox(14), for example.

However, the final step in the process appears to be displaying the list of old and new emails in the middle pane. (I use the right pane as my "reading" pane, but this is blank, also).

I already went into my Internet Options >> Security tab and set everything to default. I can still access all other web-sites that I normally access.

Any clues on what to look at first?

Thanks!

I'm having a weird problem. All of a sudden, the reading pane in outlook went away. I've tried setting it to both settings (Right, Bottom, and even Off). Tried going through Programs and repairing office ultimate. Also uninstalled outlook from there and re-installed, but still won't show.

Any ideas on how i can get it back! All I see is the list of emails, and then I have to double click to open in seperate window and read/respond/etc.

TIA!

Hi Guys,

I have been doing some research and it seems that the reading pane in outlook isnt that safe. In most of the sites i visited it said it was better to turn this off so you dont open your self up to viruses. Can somone confirm this is true before i send an e-mail round my organisation telling them to turn it off.

The reason i started to look into this was when one of our users started to recieve loads and loads of spam mail i have sorted the problem wit that now but because she had her reading pane on it seemed to infect her computer but if she had to double click on the e-mail to open it this would not have happend. Can anyone please confirm if this is the case also.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:How Safe Is The Reading Pane In Outlook?

Though turning it off is recommended, good email AV should be sufficient.

And, no, double-clicking does not protect anyone. Opening the mail by any means has the same effect.

A good AV with a "resident shield" is sufficient in most cases, but the added email scanning feature of AVG, for example, that scans incoming mail, adds even more security.

The point really is that mails from unknown persons or with suspicious titles should not be opened at all.

I find the 100% setting for reading emails in Outlook 2010 too small and would like to set 150 or 200% as a default but I can't find any facility for this and I have to adjust the setting manually every time. Can anybody advise me please?

Answer:Outlook 2010 reading pane zoom default

Hello again urbanspaceman1

You have two options for doing this:

Option 1:
Create a new email type something and go to the "zoom" feature on the top right.
Select the percentage% you want the fonts to be displayed at.

Note: The fonts may not appear large when you are viewing them on the reading pane or double click open the email. For that view you will have to always manually zoom it yourself on the right corner in the bottom but you will be able to see the fonts large when you hit reply after doing the 2 points mentioned above.

Or

Option 2:

Change your DPI settings following this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/443-dpi-display-size-settings-change.html

I will search for similar stuff.
Till then, HTH

Hi,

I'm using an Acer Windows 7 machine with MS Outlook 2010.

When I left-click and hold on the scroll bar of the reading pane
when viewing a long email, and move the mouse/scroll bar
up/down, the email doesn't scroll up/down with me as I move

How can I get Outlook 2010 to smoothly scroll, like it does every-

This has been happening for a while.. I dont remember when it started, but it seems it began when the reading pane thing below started..

Problem 2:

The reading pane will -not- stay on the bottom of the sceen when Outlook starts up.. I change it time and again from side pane to bottom pane and it just doesnt stay bottom when Outlook is restarted..

Any ideas? No viruses, or malware/spyware on the machine.. MSE updates/runs full scan every night.

I did my research and have tried every suggestion I seen. new profile, trust center, etc. One ting I do know that if i start outlook in safe mode everything displays as it use to. So there has to be something blocking the html pictures. when I click on the pictures it takes me out to the senders web site and shows it to me so the links are there. this is starting to drive me crazy, any help would be appreciated

I have quite a few machines on my domain that have started acting strange. All have windows xp pro, and windows office 2003. Some are doing ok, but some, including mine, will not respond when you hit the navagation pane buttons. If you hit the calender button you don't get your calender in the view window and all you get in the navagation pane upper window is the option to share your calender with someone. All of the other navigation pane buttons are doing the same thing. We have HP machines and clones and a few dells and this is happening on all of them. I have loaded the latest updates and service packs for outlook 2003. This is bugging me to death. Any help would be appretiated.

Hi. Recently installed Outlook 2003 on new Dell Laptop. Have heavily used Favorit Folders Pane in Outlook in the past. On my new laptop however, every time Outlook closes or I power down, the Favorite Folders Pane forgets/deletes all the folders I've put there. Kind of a Pain in the tuchus. Is there a way to save my changes that I'm not figuring?

Also... recently noticed that when I respond to an email in Outlook, my response font that I see is severely enlarged. Does not seem to come back to me that way. Any way to reset this also?

Thanks. Will

in Outlook 2003 Navigation Pane options -

1. is there a way to tweak the options and add shrotcuts to any folders?

2. Contacts - "My Contacts" is there a way to tweak it and add an icon to a diffferent contacts folder.

I know that all of this can be acheived inside of "Shortcuts". You can save a few clicks if were able to tweak the "navigation pane options" and just add shortcuts there.

You *can* add your most used folders to the Favorites area at the top.

Howdy,
Been searching for this one for a bit. Found loads on Blank Reading Pane however this is slightly different.

Have a home user who some messages are not displaying in the reading pane. These are mainly from Facebook and some various ones from their work colleagues.

When choosing reply message is also blank however selecting Office Button > Editor Options > Display > Hidden Text (checked) the message content appears.

Why then is the message content not visible in the main preview pane? These are just the simple message notifications such as from facebook.

Looked at fonts / mail format (tried all variences) to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

When in the Inbox there is a toolbar button to do the above. I have created a folder called (imaginatively) "Read" where I move messages that I have read and want to keep. When you click this button you get a list of all the folders that you have ever sent things to.So far, so good. Problem: There is also a Read folder within Archive Folders. In the list of folders I therefore get two Read folders that I can move to (both called simply "Read"). Which is which? Obviously I only want to move things to the current folder. I know that I can drag and drop from one Read folder to the other but it is a pain.I'm sure I read somewhere that you cannot change the list of "Move to" folders that Outlook offers. But there must be a registry fix - isn't there?P.S. Just to emphasise that this is *not* Outlook Express that I'm on about.

Is there any way to move the cached contacts to another PC.....

For example; if you send an email to a new email address, (say [email protected]) outlook saves it somewhere, and the next time you type K, that address, plus all the other ones beginning with K will drop down.

The email address is not in the address book, as it would have had to be added manually.
If someone know where these contacts are stored, and if they can be moved, it'd be a great help.

Answer:Solved: Outlook 2003 - how to move cached contacts to a different PC

The auto-complete suggestions in Outlook come from what is called a nickname list that is generated by Outlook over an extended period of time. The files that are used with the nickname list have the extension .nk2 and are usually stored in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\your-profile\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
These .nk2 files may be hidden so make sure to enabling viewing of hidden files within Windows explorer. Once you find the files you can try copying them from one Windows profile to another to see if the auto-suggestions will be transferred. I've never done this myself but I would assume the you would need the same contacts in your contacts folder or address book as well.

You can also type the first few letters of an email address and press CTRL + K to autoresolve the address or bring up the list of possible values to choose from.

Rollin

I cannot even drag them up or down in the inbox. When I try this, I see the "slash" symbol for a brief second, but it goes away. It is like a settings has been changed, but this was working fine yesterday. I have tried draging with old and new email - neither works. The only thing I can do is right click, and choose "Move To Folder..."

Hi foleyfan,

Please see the article at http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/th2outlook.php which deals with this issue. The only difference in your situation is the need to copy the emails from the old laptop to the new one before importing into Outlook.

Hello,

I keep getting the following message while clicking on a link in the reading pane of Outlook: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your System Admin."

Well, I am the Admin and I've checked every conceivable setting in Outlook and my browsers (both firefox and explorer) and it still can't figure out what the problem is.

I am behind a Linksys wireless "WRT54GS" router.

This started happening a few days ago and I haven't loaded any new programs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yesterday afternoon my mail app suddenly decided that I no longer wanted the reading pane off to the right side unless I am in full screen mode. If I open the window wider (but not full screen) it will either let me have the preview screen or the bar off to the left with the list of accounts, but not both. If I open the mail app in full screen it has both the preview pane and the ribbon on the left.
I'm sure I must have clicked something to make it do this but have no idea what. I've clicked and unclicked "show preview text" a few times and completely restarted once to no avail. What have I done and how do I fix it? I'm using a desktop PC.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits with a monitor in portrait.

For that reason I would like to get the preview pane in Explorer at the bottom of the screen for having a readible preview for example of a pdf (because the new 16:9 screen are getting so low, and thus so narrow in portrait).

Is this possible.

In that way one could also choose to have a filmstrip of the pdf :

- Landscape monitor : pane right : full pdf view
pane bottom : filmstrip of pdf pages.

- Portrait monitor : the opposite

Answer:Getting preview-reading pane at bottom of screen.

I resolved this using XYplorer instead of Explorer.

I've been using Win 8 for a while and was frustrated that the "filmstrip" view option was gone. I used WinXP since it came out till this past summer. If that tells you how ingrained I was and am. Win 10 is great over Win 8 or 7 but, that filmstrip isn't there. Most people with cameras take landscape type pictures, some portrait. I think the majority take them in landscape. Well, in Win 8 and 10, you "can" get a preview of images with the preview pane option BUT, it's stuck to the right side of the window. Now, 99% of my pictures are landscape so, viewing an image on the right hand side is restricting and does not allow one to view a landscape image fully. It's annoying as all get out. Is there a way to move the images preview pane to the upper position and the thumbnails to the bottom? Just like the filmstrip in Win XP?

Basically, every time I open a word document, I want it to open in reading layout. I know I can select this option through the menu in MS Word. However, I need this to be a permanent setting and want to make this change through the registry editor.

Is anyone familiar with a registry key that I need to amend (or create) to enforce this setting?

Hey guys, Just got my carbon x1 yesterday and overall very happy with the product.  There's just one thing that's bugging the heck out of me and I can't seem to disable via UltraNav.  So what's been happening is whenever I move the cursor out of the screen(i.e. towards any of the 4 edges) it jumps to the middle and actually selects w/e is there.  Does any one know how to turn this off/if this is normal?  I haven't experienced any other glitchy cursor jumps; this one happens very often, but not always, so I assume it's something to do with functionalities built in for touch/windows 8?  Thanks! edit: Hmm just realized this only happens in Chrome...maybe it's not thinkpad's problem then..

Hi,I am used from my t500 to click and hold middle button on the Ultranav and move up and down with the touchpad to scroll up and down. However, this does not work on my t510 anymore. At least it does work sometimes for some seconds in google chrome; but just for some short moments. The default behaviour is, that when i'm clicking the middle button the scroll symbol in form of a little scrollbar appears. I can then scroll by using the trackpoint, but not by using the touchpad. Using the touchpad has just the effekt, that the symbol disappears.Sometimes another symbol appears; its the symbol with the arrows pointing in all direktions. Only when this symbol appears i am able to scroll by moving on the touchpad. Now i am looking for a solution to my problem.by the way: when i use the trackpoint, the touchpad is locked for some seconds. Is there a way to disable this? Best Greets, matthias.

When I open Word or Excel in Office 2003, I get a Column on the right headed by a task pane "Getting Started" I can eliminate on a per case basis but want to eliminate it for all documents when opened. Is there a way to do this?

Tools / Options / View / uncheck 'Startup Task Pane'

Same procedure for Excel.

If that doesn't work, (it does on mine) there is a registry edit, but you will have to Google for that,
and you should backup your registry first, if you go that route.

Hi, I have a problem in office 2003. In the creating new document tab in task pane the hyperlinks have changed color in green instead of blue and I don't know how to reverse it. 1. I did an office repair, 2. re-install office, 3. changed the style in hyperlinks.  But nothing happened.and that happen only in the creating new document tab in task pane of all office programms.Does anyone know any other solution?Thnx in advance.

Answer:Microsoft Office 2003 task pane formating

Sounds like an orphan registry key that is not reinitialized when office is uninstalled and reinstalled. But generally you can go in and change the color to whatever you want similar to seen here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/demo-change-the-color-of-hyperlink-text-HA010243430.aspxTo get rid of the issue you can manually uninstall office 2003 and then search for the orphan registry key for office 2003 and remove it, and then reinstall clean..... or perform a clean installation of the OS and Office 2003 in which it would definately be the default of blue because no orphan data would carry back over from previous install.

Greetings -A customer of mine recently noticed that his installation of MS Word 2003 Professional (Windows XP, SP2) would not display any results for his thesaurus. Until recently, he had not tried to use the Thesaurus, so it is not known if it worked before. Upon further inspection, I found that the context menu (right-click menu) would display the first layer of thesaurus results for a selected word, however clicking on the "Thesaurus" option in the context menu (which brings up the research task pane) would prompt Word to install an additional component. The installation box would come up for a moment, a progress bar would indicate that it was installing, and then would finish and dissapear. The research pane, however, would not display any results, no matter what word was used. Any of the other research options selected (by using the drop down on the research pane, underneath the word being searched) would result in the same process, along with the same failure. I have included three screenshots appended to one another in the following link. Another computer using the same version of Office 2003 professional (installed in the same exact manner, also Win XP SP2) on the customer's home network works just fine. Answer:Ms Word 2003 - Thesaurus (research Pane) Will Not Display Any Results

Hi Robert.
Does the spell checker work or is it gone too?
By default, Office will install the "Research" add-on in IE. If nothing else, it should find on-line results, provided the add-on is installed and enabled in IE (Tools>Manage Add-Ons) and a site is selected via the "research options" selection in the lower right corner under the Research pane in Word. There is also the local source options there as well. Take a look.
If worse comes to worse, remove and re-install the office proofing tools.
To do so, select Office in Add\remove. Click the "Change" button.
Select "Add or Remove Features" and click the "Next" button.
Place a check in the "Choose Advanced Customization of Applications" option and click the "Next" button.
Navigate to: Office Shared Features>Proofing Tools>English.
Left click each sub option and choose "Not Available". Click the "Update" button and follow the prompts.
To re-install, go back to the same spot and choose "Run from My Computer" on each of the options.
Insert the cd if prompted.

Why they design them that way I'll never know. The first thing I do every time I turn on my laptop is to disable that contraption. I'll use a mouse or the touch screen, but refuse to use the touch pad. I upgraded to Office 2013 a number of months ago and have a problem I can't find the answer to that has finally driven me crazy enough to ask about.

In the navigation pane you have the mailbox with all it's sub folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc.) I collapse the mailbox and work primarily out of PST folders and the Inbox, Sent, and Deleted links in the Favorites section above this.

Randomly the mailbox will expand so I can see all these folders again. Not sure why - I'm guessing it's from things like an email auto-saved to Drafts - when the mailbox expands the main PST folder I use drop out of site and I have to scroll down to them (such a big hassle right?)

Outlook 2010 had no issues with this, you collapse the mailbox it stayed that way until outlook was closed and opened again or you manually expanded the mailbox folder list. Is there a way to keep the mailbox collapsed?

Answer:Outlook 2013 navigation pane help

I haven't noticed this myself, but maybe if you add these other folders to favorites, it might help. I mean Drafts for example.

In Outlook 2000 it was almost instant.

I thought that because I have big inbox, outbox, deleted items, etc it might be why it's taking so long, but even on new machines with barely anything in there, it takes a long time.

I am running OE v6 on XP+SP2, and am up to date on MS fixes. I connect to the net via a DSL line and a Netview Router (with built-in h/w firewall). I long ago disabled the OE Preview Pane (for well-known reasons) and everything works more-or-less fine.

I wanted to demonstrate the Preview Pane (and explain why it's a bad thing) to a friend, but when I clicked View/Layout, the entire bottom half of the resultant box was grayed out, so that I could not enable the pane.

I figured that this was something to do with the IE Connection/Security settings, but playing with these made no change.

Has anybody else seen this problem, and know the fix?

TIA

To get the preview pane back in Outlook Express try this....

Open Outlook Express > View > Layout > tick the box at the bottom that says "Show Preview Pane" > Apply > OK.

That should bring it back again for you.

Thanks!

Is there a way to put the preview pane on the side, as opposed to the bottom like you can in Outlook Express 5?

Answer:Preview Pane in Outlook 2000

Looks like the only options for the Preview Pane are On or Off.

Preview pane keeps turning itself back on after being turned off. Has anyone had this happen?

Hi. I had set my folders with the preview pane on. All of a sudden, it seems like it turned off by itself. Now some folders have the preview pane but a lot don't. What happened? How do I turn it on again for all folders without having to click on each folder and turning it on one by one? Help!
