I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: recover outlook inbox from external harddrive

Search for your PST file. This contains all of the data for Outlook (except accounts, but it'll have emails, calendars, tasks, etc). Exchange accounts use OST files.

I'm Using Windows XP, Laptop. I'm Using Incredimail. I URGENTLY need to put numerous Inbox Folders in my External Hard Drive.. My Laptop needs repair, I think the fans are going bad. It makes a grinding noise & gets hot to the touch, then automatically shuts itself off. I need to get these on my E. H/D before something happens or I have to take it in.
I have thousands of stats, graphics, & important work in the folders that I cannot afford to lose! I've tried everything I can think of to no avail.

No one seems to know how that I've asked. Or I was told I would have to "Save As & put them one at a time in a folder on my Desltop, then put that folder in my External Hard Drive. This would be impossible to do, since there are hundreds of Folders in my Inbox with hundreds of inform. in each folder.
If any one could Please give me the steps & tell me how to put them on my External HardDrive (Western Digital) from my Incredimal Inbox, I would greatly appreciate it!! Or how to get the Folders from my Incredimail Inbox to My Desktop...

Sincere Regards & Much Appreciaton.

I recently added a second HD to my system. I made my old HD the slave & performed a fresh install of Windows XP on my new master HD. I was going to only reinstall and transfer files to the new HD that I need and then wipe the second HD clean to use for storage. I still have all the data on the old HD. How do I retrieve the stored email messages in my Outlook Express Inbox from my old HD? My new HD only contains messages from the new installation. I tried copying the Outllok Express folder from my old HD to my new HD but that didn't work. Can I access Outlook Express directly on my old HD? How? I'm running Win XP SP 2. Thanks.

Answer:Recover Inbox from Outlook Express

Hi buccos17

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

In Outlook Express
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab
click the Store Folder button to see the path where the Identity keeps its .dbx files.
Close Outlook Express.

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to that directory, delete the Folders.dbx file for the Identity.

Move or copy the saved .dbx files into that directory.
Verify the file attributes are not Read-Only.

Restart Outlook Express, your folders and messages should appear.

Have been running Outlook 2010 on this laptop for over a year. A week ago, the Inbox disapeared. The preview pane shows the emails that are there but there is no Inbox nor any of the sub-folders that should be there. The sent box is there with all its sub-folders. Downloaded and ran MFCMAPI utilty in 64 bit version. But could not find a folder called 'Top of Information Store’

Laptop is running Windows 8.

Tried to do a system restore to before the last Windows Update but that did not make any difference.

Answer:Solved: Outlook Inbox

Hi moose69

Is this Microsoft Outlook (version?)?
Or Outlook Express?

Outlook Express uses .dbx files and Microsoft Outlook uses .pst files.
Do a Search for these files, if you are unable to locate them you may need to enable Show Hidden Files and Folders

Are you using Windows XP?
Windows XP:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
Apply, OK to save and close.

Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All files and folders,
In the field for: all or part of the file name
Key in:
.dbx, .pst
Below that, click on More advanced options
in the field: Type of File, select (All Files and Folders)
place a checkmark in:
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
click Search

Outlook Express
Copy all .dbx files to a folder to transfer to the new system, you can then use the Import in Outlook Express to move the messages into the new Identity.
Or, since the message store for Outlook Express will consist only of the Welcome message, you can paste all the .dbx files into the Message Store.

Locate the message store in Outlook Express:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder button
Note the directory given, using Windows Explorer navigate to that directory.
Close Outlook Express, copy/paste or drag the .dbx files into the directory.

Copy the .pst fil... Read more

I have three separate email accounts with Road Runner but they've decided to delete any email that is 60 days old, regardless of the space you have remaining in your email storage. I setup my outlook to download my emails to my computer and I have additional identies for my three email accounts. When I first did send/receive for my primary account it dumped all my emails into my inbox but I wanted to keep the others separate, and I fear if I connect to my other accounts they'll end up piling into the same inbox. Is it possible to have a different inbox along with each identity? I have a primary email and one of the other two is sort of a newsgroup that gets quite a few emails sometimes, but I don't read them as often so wanted to keep them apart. The third one I read even less and that one gets spam sometimes. I would think there would be a way to do this, specially for families with multiple email users.....?

Hey all.

Win 7 Pro 32 Bit

Ok, so Outlook 2010

My company's inbox size limitations are quite small, so I have created an arhive

What I want to know is if there is a way to rig up outlook so that:

1. All items received come into the main inbox, but also he inbox in the archive.

2. All items sent go into the main sent box, as well as the sent box in the archive

The sent option isn't as big a deal as the inbox, just figured I'd ask, knowing full well the process is probably the same for each anyway.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Outlook 2010 - Receive in main inbox and archive inbox

Not by default. Set up a rule to accomplish what you want to do. Kind of defeats the purpose of an archive folder if you are going to throw every incoming email n there.

I have set up some rules for the Inbox Assistant so that e-mail coming in from a particular user is to be forwarded to my yahoo e-mail address, but it doesn't work.

In the Rule, I have the e-mail address from the person that I want to have forwarded.

I have "Sent directly to me" checked.

In "Perform these actions:" I have "Forward" checked and my yahoo e-mail address in the "To..." area. The "Method:" is set to standard.

In the "Advanced..." options, I have nothing selected or checked.

Nothing gets forwarded. Does anyone have an idea what I may be doing wrong.

It seems I have two email programs, but only use OE. I noticed somehow that there is another email program on my computer where some, not all, incoming emails end up... in addition to ending up in OE. How or why is this happening?

I don't know how to find that other email program anymore, but I suspect it's still running. How or where can I find it? Not even sure what it's called, but am thinking it's an email program that came with my computer, but then so did OE. I don't understand why both would have been included, except to give me a choice or something. I have looked in "Add/Remove Programs" and "All Programs" lists, but didn't see it there.

To be honest, I've been less than thrilled with OE, so maybe that other program is better. I don't know... but would like to compare the two and chose one as my default email program and maybe even uninstall the other one eventually.

Please advise. Thank you!

I should say this too....
This isn't a real important issue, so I'm in no hurry. Whenever someone can get to it is fine.

A few months ago, our small firm switched from our AT&T @sbcglobal accounts (which used Yahoo Mail) to With Yahoo Mail, we were able to sync the Inbox with Outlook (desktop platform) and download emails to archive with project folders.

We would now like to sync just the inbox of with Outlook (or any other program that will get the job done). The problem is that whenever I try to sync an account, it attempts to download all messages in the entire account, not just the Inbox. We have so many messages that this sync doesn't work, and we don't want all the messages downloaded anyway, just the ones we've moved to the Inbox to archive.

If anyone is able to help with this I'd greatly appreciate it. There are too many irrelevant topics flooding the results when I do a Google search; I can't find a solution.

Answer:Solved: How to download emails from Inbox Only?

Set the account up as POP account and it will only download what's in the inbox:
See the section called Apps that support POP and SMTP.
Be sure to check the box to leave the email on the server and uncheck the box that says to delete email after a certain number of days if you want the email to stay on the Outlook server.

I have a linux based POP3 server and have configured outlook 2003 as a client to access mails. I have added myself to a group/DL, but when I send it to this group the mails do not reach my inbox. Do note that they have been sent (in my sent items). Added the respective group in the send/receive groups(making my inbox to be included in this particular group), created a separate folder in my Inbox. No Luck. For some reason I now find that whenever I read an e-mail message and then close and reopen Outlook Express 6, the read message is missing from my Inbox. In fact, I believe there have been times recently when, after closing and then reopening IE6, several messages, whether they had been read or not, would be missing. I don't know if these two missing-messages problems are related or not.

I've been using Outlook Express for over 10 years and I've never experienced this problem before. I read a number of topics at OE Help but was unable to find a solution. While I am able to find these "missing" messages at Comcast Mail (SmartZone), I prefer using OE, with which I'm much more familiar. I've heard bad things about OE, so maybe I'd be better off using a different program.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might have an answer to my problem. Thank you.

Been noticing recently, some messages disappear inexplicably while others remain,

This has been happening too often for an accidental delete. Not even showing up in the deleted box.

I have always had archive setting turned off.

Edit: could it be that items I delete in the webmail could be also deleted in Outlook Inbox?

If so, this is new to me.

Edit#2: yes, I just confirmed this. I deleted the message in webmail, and it was gone in Outlook2010.

Never experienced this.

How to change this?

Hi There - I am totally lost with this one. I am a beginner with computers. I use Windows XP, Outlook Express 6. Have been using this totally fine for what seems months and months. I booted up the computer today and went in to check my mail. Kaspersky comes up as usual to say that I am receiving mail. I then click OK to receive the mail. The mail comes in and in the grey bar at the bottom of the page on Outlook Express I can see that there are 120 messages with 20 unread. Problem is I just get a blank screen with no messages listed. It is checked in 'View' to 'show all messages' and none of the settings has been changed.

I cannot see the box on the top left that has 'Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Drafts etc'. I can go into 'View', 'Go to folder' and yep, all my folder options come up. If I select a folder, I can see the number of messages in that folder on the bottom grey line on the screen, so they are all there but I can't see a single message on the screen.

If I go into my husbands account - the Outlook Express page comes up perfectly with no gliches, but I cannot access my messages via his account.

Does anyone have any suggestions, this is driving me crazy as I have some important stuf there. Any help would be so appreciated, I am picking up any new mail via Yahoo but would so like to have my old ones back.

We have a mailbox on an exchange server. When there are emails in the inbox it shows the amount of emails with a number at the side of the inbox and when there are no emails there is no number but recently it is showing 1 more email than there really is.

If there were 10 emails it will show 11 and when there are none it shows as 1 (see picture attached) It isn't so much a problem as it is an annoyance. Even more annoying is that i cannot figure it out. Can anyone help.

Answer:Solved: Can't find a folder in Outlook 2007 inbox

Could be a corrupt user profile. Try going to the exact location of the folder you "can't find" and making a copy of it, then going to where the folders you can find are and pasting a copy in there.
If that doesn't work you may need to make a new profile.

Well, getting my new pc tomorrow (hopefully), but was curious about external harddrives. I was thinking of having one, but need a simple question answered.

Can you install programs onto one, then run them from there, so as to free up the main drive? What I mean is, can I install a game I don't play much unless my mate is round, called Civillisations 4. Then, play it from the external drive, and it runs from there, saves to there, and no files are on my main system?

If not, can I do this. Load the game on my main system, but all saved files to go directly to the external drive? The reason I'm also asking this, is this is the one game we play online when he's at home etc. So, its an ongoing game, as you can imagine.

Not sure if you can access the web via an external drive, so if the latter idea works, that would be okay, I guess. As long as the saved files don't go to the main system, as I don't want to lose them should anything happen.

Many thanks for all replies

I recently brought a Western Digital "Wd Elements" 500gb external harddrive. I plugged it in and it worked perfectly. In properties it showed it was a 500gb harddrive (465gb).

Today I used a program called " ". I tried to use this program to backup my 80gb (74.5) internal harddrive. After starting the program and copying data from my internal 80gb to my external 500gb for about 5mins...I decided to stop the process because it was going to take 28 hours to back up all my data. So I stopped "". Rebooted the pc.... and went to my external 500gb to delete anything which had been copied over. I went in to properties on my external hd and noticed that my storage capacity of my external hd had been reduced to 74.5gb from 500gb!!!

So effectively I have a 80gb external Harddrive!!!!

I think must have made a copy of my 80gb hd and maybe somehow partitioned it to my external hd????

Hi recently I accidentally unplugged the cord of my WD HDD and now I cant access some of my files. Originally when I tried opening the folder, it gave me a prompt indicating that my files were in a different destination or something (sorry I dont remember it because it only showed up once) and after that, the folder becomes empty. I checked the properties and it says 0MB of space is used. This happened with another folder too, where initially it says its corrupt and now the folder is gone completely. However, the space is still occupied on my harddrive. I was wondering if theres any fix for this? not necessarily recovering the files, but maybe at least recovering the lost space? Thanks!

I have recently purchased a 320gig harddrive which i was hoping to use to transfer all my films and music on to. However i cannot transfer any file to it whatsoever. It is formatted as NTFS and i am using Windows Vist BAsic.

The error message i get when transferring is " This is no longer located in C:\blah\blah verify items location and try again"

What does this mean? The file is definantly there and has always been there and works on Vista completely fine so my question is why wont it transfer across?

Thanks for help

Answer:Solved: cant transfer to external harddrive?

I suggest that you give it another try once you reconnect the drive again.

I have personally plugged in a flash drive, and tried to copy files over to it too soon before the computer had settled on what to do with it. Before I knew it, the drive letter for it disappeared, and appeared again, usually as the same drive letter. Once or so, it didn't assign a drive letter for it at all, and when using the Safely Remove Hardware feature, it showed it as USB Mass Storage Device and nothing else. So all I had to do what reinsert it.

I suddenly can't access my seagate freeagent go 250 gb external harddrive.
When I plugged it in my usb, the icon on the bottom right corner showed, but on windows explorer only the drive letter showed without the name. When I clicked on it it say failure performing inpage operation.
Normally the light on the drive light steadily now it's just fading in & out slowly.
Before this happen when I plugged my hardrive, in the middle of autoplay window playing the light suddenly blinking rapidly with clicking sound then the autoplay stop & the failure performing inpage operation error appeared. Since then I can't access my harddrive.
The drive work perfectly when I use it in my media player, so I guess the problem must be in my computer.
My computer is Intel E2180 with Windows XP SP2
Please help

Thank you

Hello, thanks for the board. I recently bought a new laptop so I decided to make my old harddrive into an external harddrive and bought a 2.5' HDD External Enclosure. It works perfectly for the harddrive I have but I decided to test out my harddrive from a previous laptop before that and the fitting seems different but there seems to be a slot built in for it but it doesn't recognize it at all...I have attached pictures to this post and was wondering if anyone could help me? Is there something else I have to add to it or should it work?

Sorry for all the pics! Obviously the one with the needles separated works and goes inside a diff. slot within the external hardclosure but still...there is a space which the other one perfectly goes into! It came with a USB connector (which works perfectly for the one) and also a "Crimping Sata connector" which I can connect it to the enclosure but I don't think I have a slot for it on my laptop?? Thanks for your help with such a tenuous problem...!

Hi, I have a new external harddrive, the Western Digital My Book World Edition II - 2 TB. Just took it out the box, plugged into my network and it's all good. I was going to use the type A-type B usb but it's not the right type. I then buy a usb cable, the type A- type A connector, and it doesn't look right. I can connect the flat type A side to the external harddrive, but the bigger side type A won't go into the pc, and vice versa. Did I buy the right one or is there another one that fits into it? I want to have access to both the network application side and the direct harddrive usb side.

Here are the specs and pics:

Hi there!

When I start Outlook 2007, suddenly my Calendar is displaying instead of my IMAP Inbox despite the fact that I've chose my IMAP Inbox as my preferred folder to display at startup.

It's worked in the past, and without any reason, it's decided to ignore my settings.

Any clues, anyone?

Answer:Solved: Outlook 2007 Calendar Displaying instead of IMAP Inbox

outlook:calendar snuck itself into my startup command line after the outlook.exe command. THAT'S what makes it start in the Calendar!

I am helping a business change from Express to Outlook. When my client deletes or moves items, they remain in the Inbox with a strike through line. I cannot find the option's menu that addresses this problem: we want the deleted items to disappear (to the deleted folder) and the moved items to to disappear from the Inbox.
Does anyone know where the options item for solving this is located.
Thanks, Uro

I am using Outlook 2003 and running Windows XP.

If I reply to a message in my inbox, all goes well. Mail is sent and sent message appears in sent message file. If I have a message filed in another folder and try to reply to it, the message appears to send, but I end up with the sent message in the same file I sent it from. Nothing appears in the Sent Message folder. I have tried to reply to a message to myself and the message is received in my inbox, but the copy of the sent message only appears in the folder I sent it from.

Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Outlook 2003 - Can only reply to message from inbox - no other folder

Check this option.
In Outlook click Tools> Options> Preferences tab
Click on Email Options button> Advanced Email Options button
Uncheck the box: In folders other than the Inbox save replies with the original message
Then OK your way out.

Three days ago I had an email received with an attachment that was relativily large. The person sending it to me had issues with their email as well, becuase it was received over 60 times. I already had about 90 emails already in the inbox. Typically once the emails are read and dealt with, the get filed into sub folders.

How do i recover the emails from this file!!

Iam trying to restore some stored files back into outlook express from either the message store folder under C: .. drive or from the external backup drive (free agent by Seagate).

In observing a thread that reads as follows, i was unsure what to do with the "Test.dbx"
See the notepad copy below:

Select OE6>Next.
Check Import from an OE6 Store directory>Next.
Click the Browse and select the folder on the desktop>OK>Next.
Select All Folders (Or pick the ones you want)>Next.
Let it run and hopefully everything will Import successfully.
If that fails, you could try manually placing the DBX files into OE.
In OE, create a new folder named Test and click it once to open it.
Close OE and in the Message Store folder, delete Test.dbx.
Rename the DBX you want to put in to Test.dbx and place a copy of it in the Message Store folder.
Open OE and see if the Messages are in folder Test.
If they are, rename folder Test (it can be whatever you want), open it to activate and automatically change the name of it's DBX file, and then create a new folder named Test and repeat the above with the next DBX you need to restore."""
i will have about 15 files to do this to.
Do I just delete .dbx or Test.dbx ?
And what should I rename the DBX to? Rename it to Newtest.dbx or??

I need to apologize for asking how to do this, but need to get it right the first time.
thanks so much for being patient with me,

Hiya there,

I have been trying to figure out how to add a tick box for outlook inbox view for every message line, one that I could myself tick and use for sorting?

I would use it to mark items for deletion, in a similar manner than in many of the web-based email clients have.

Replies would be very much appreciated, and is there is some piece of code that I need to purchase, I might even go for that if it's not expensive.

New incoming messages are lost (apparently deleted) by Outlook Express when the program closes. This is occurring for a resident of a retirement community shared domain that I help to manage. The messages come in to a central network server which is its own ISP, as IMAP mail and are held in a shared server storage drive. They can be accessed by authorized users from any of a half-dozen separate computers through which incoming and outgoing messages can be routed. Each user has a separate userid and password-protected account. This behaviour started very suddenly and has not been experienced by any of our other resident accounts. I watched today as she opened Outlook Express, read a couple new messages, then closed Outlook Express without doing anything. When she re-opened Outlook Express, the messages were no longer there. I have searched as best I could through the Microsoft Knowledge base but have not found anything that addressed this issue. Does anyone have a suggestion of what setting might have been disturbed or what file might be corrupted.

Answer:Solved: Outlook Express deletes Inbox Messages on exit

A bit of a long shot really, but in Outlook Express, go to Tools -> Options ->Maintenance and in there, there is an option to "Purge Deleted Messages When Leaving IMAP Folders.

If this is enabled, it may be what is causing the problem

I am currently using a 160gb external harddrive through a 4-port USB 2.0 pcmcia adapter in order to get around the super slow USB 1.1. It has been working a treat for the past week or so but recently when i plug in my harddrive it makes a cyclical "clicking" noise and its light continuous flickers. Whilst this is happening, my computer begins to recognise the device but fails with the "problem with installation" message.
BUT; when I use the external harddrive on my USB 1.1 it works fine and normal, AND when I use other USB devices on the pcmcia card they too work fine as usual.
I feel that because of this it is not an error in the harddrive and apparently also not an error with the pcmcia card. So what else could it be????

hiya guys my c drive is now at capacity despite me getting rid of everything i can
so i bought a WD external haarddrive 250gb

and would like to move some programmes over to generate space , so far ive only been able to manage to copy them

ideally id like to move itunes over and all my music this would free up most of my disc space
i moved my itunes music folder over but was unable to move itunes so when i opened it up it transfered all my music back and i was back square one !

im a novice at thes stuff so any help would be fantastic thanks guys

Answer:Solved: transfering programmes to external harddrive

Firstly you don't want to transfer programs to an external drive nor can it be done by a simple copy and paste - you would need to uninstall them off the C drive and then install them specifying the external drive - but again its not recommended to install programs on an external drive, but you can transfer data such as documents and music.

The reason your copying is failing is because you need to move the files a specific way since Windows and all programs expect them to be in a specific place.

You can move the entire My Documents to the external drive and that would include the My Music folder since its a sub folder of My Documents. To do that click on Start and go to the My Documents and right click on it and select Properties. Then click on Move and select the new location for the documents folder. But be sure to create a folder on the external drive called My Documents before doing that and selecting that folder. But then you would need to have that drive connected and turned on any time you wanted to access anything in your My Documents.

Or you can just move the My Music folder but you need to use something like Tweakui to accomplish that. See here for how to:

Or you could simply copy the music to the external drive and then delete and recreate your iTunes library so that library is being accessed from the external drive.

I am running windows 7 on my laptop, I have an Hitachi 1tb external harddrive which I know that I must eject to avoid damage to the files on thedevice. When i plug it in it works perfectly but when I go to eject it windows keeps showing the pop up saying its still in use so I close all programs- onlythe ones that work in the background are left- but it still says its being used and i don’t see how. Therefore I can either shut my laptop down or take a chance simply removing the usb lead- I dont believe its being used but i dont want to risk losing my files.

This happens not only with my external harddrive but with all my external devices but the harddrive wories me the most due to the risk of corrupted files.

Is there a solution to this problem or is there a program that may be usingit in the backround? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
I accidentally formatted my Seagate Ext. HDD!!!! As you know my life & more is on the drive... all stored safely on this 'offsite' back up drive!' There is another back up on DVD but that doesn't have all the info, so it will help but not by much! I don't want to take the drive to a technician, they charge way to much, for something that can be done on my own computer - I have Windows 7 and a Toshiba laptop.

I have looked at some data recovery sites and recommendations; am undecided, what is the best software to use for the Seagate FreeAgent HDD?

My question: Is there any ultra-reliable free or low cost software that can retrieve my data this HDD??

Hello Guys.

I wonder could anybody tell me: I have recently bought an external hard-drive to hold my back up files - However the unit came with a note from the supplier saying I needed to download a firmware upgrade to operate it in Vista. I have found this not to be the case. I simply plugged the unit in and the PC recognised it straightaway and I was able to transfer my files with no problems. It even ran it's first scheduled back-up without a hitch. I also used windows to scan on-line automatically if there were any driver updates required.

My question therefore is should I persevere in downloading the firmware upgrade as suggested or file it under 'if it aint broke..'?

I just purchased an Acomdata HD040FE 40G External Firewire Hard Drive. I have a Compaq (didn't know any better at the time) 5736 which came with win98 but also has firewire ports which my son has used for editing digital video from his Panasonic DV camera. The drive stated it worked with win98se and above so I upgraded to win98se. I installed all the updates including the win98se firewire update plus updated the firewire controller drivers but the computer still doesn't recognize the drive. I've even tried going into DOS to do an fdisk but the only drive that shows up is my C: hard drive. The DV camera is still recognized. I tried the Acomdata web site but not alot of info is posted there. I tried calling them but got a message to leave my name and number followed by a message that voice mail was unavailable. (That gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.) They responded to my email by telling me to run the firewire update, which I tried again. Still can't get the computer to recognize the drive. I've now decided to turn to the experts" you! Anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? Thanks.

I've searched everywhere for a proggy for this: basically, before I was clued up to use the .pst personal folder file in Outlook 2000 to backup my email, I saved my inbox holus bolus, by just searching for inbox.dbx in Outlook EXPRESS and moving it to a backup location.

The trouble comes when you try to retrieve your backups. You can view inbox.dbx as a text file, but any attachments are irretrievable garbage eg the jpgs are just letters, the excel characters and so on....

there's plenty of info from Microsoft and hobbyists on converting ALL sorts of things except .dbx files back into an inbox.

You can try to restore the inbox to outlook express by deleting both the existing inbox and its reference files from outlook express, but outlook simply recreates a new blank inbox and ignores yours - no matter how thorough you are, you can't recreate (or get outlook to recreate) teh reference tree it builds for an inbox. You just get a brand new empty inbox alongside your ignored imported .dbx file...

Has anyone found a program which converts .dbx files back into an inbox? Microsoft pages don't have the answer...yet it must be fairly simple...

Earlier this evening I had a problem that ended up requiring me to do a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with service pack 2 onto my computer. I did not format, rather I installed over the current and problematic install. I've done this a number of times in the past with very few problems. Tonight was not one of these times however.

For some reason (and this has not happened in the past) when I went to open up Outlook I could not find the program at all. I cannot in fact find any Office programs when I had the full suite installed.

When doing this in the past, all my desktop icons remained in tact as did my startup menu. Now, this time, the only thing missing is Office.

What I'm trying to figure out, before I do much else here, is can the files, specifically my email data, be recovered in any way?

Hi guys,

Recently, my computer died and my only option was to buy a new one. Because my old hard drive isn’t compatible (?) to connect to the new motherboard, I’ve put it in an external case and have been transferring the stuff I need into the brand new drive on the new machine without a problem.

My question is… how I can “import” my Outlook emails and contacts that are stored on the external drive onto my new drive? I’ve already set up MS Outlook (Office 2003) on my Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) system (same as the old one), and the emails are functioning properly. I just need to get all my old Outlook info back.

I’ve tried following the path of where I’m being told the .pst files are on the local drive (C:\Users\MelbMuso\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst) and also on the external (F) drive, but when I search for both particular paths, I get error messages. If I manually search for the folders, I only get as far as the 'MelbMuso‘ folder, and the folders named after that aren’t shown.

I thought the folders may have been hidden, so I right clicked and clicked ‘Properties’, then selected the ‘Hidden’ box, thinking that the missing folders would appear. Instead, a window appeared showing files being transferred, which I thought was going to show the missing folders, but instead, the ‘MelbMuso’ folder disappeared all together. I did not click delete at any stage.

Any suggestions on how I can get this ‘MelbMuso’ folder back, and how I can get my... Read more

I can still access that drive from my new drive, but i need to recover important files/folders from my Outlook Express on the old drive. Right now i'm using the standard Outlook Express that comes with XP Pro, but if i remember correctly on the old drive i upgraded it to Microsoft Office 2003 Outlook...don't know if that matters...

Question: Recover Harddrive

Hey  My laptop recently died on me the Graphics Card inside it has broken and it has to be sent for repair so that is some good news for me today however the repair guy says that all the data will have to be erased from the computer but i ain't being ripped off to pay a fortune to recover my hard drive when i could do it myself so this is my question? How could i recover am laptop hard drive with a broken graphics card? I know some programs can let you see what files you want but the Grpahics Card has broken so that idea is out the window, I was wondering if i could just plug my portable USB  hard drive in to the computer via USB and it would just start grabbing the data off the computer?Or would i have to go around this a different way optionally i would like it if i could just plug the portable HDD in the computer and then it will copy all the files without any hassle? Thanks for your time!

Answer:Recover Harddrive

WAIT STOP!!!If the Graphics Card is broken, ask him 'why the heck would you need to erase the computer's hard drive??'

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Thank you in advance for any help!

Any 3.5" IDE compatible drive enclosure will do the trick. I use a ThermalTake enclosure myself (same as MadDog and CompUSAs no-name brand).

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

Hi, this is going to be a tricky one for a first post, I fear. I need to export email from Outlook 2007 on my old laptop to an external hard drive, then import it to a new machine running Outlook 2010.

Sounds simple, right? Well, here's the rest of the story:

My old laptop threw a major fit after I updated the AV suite last year, and now refuses to launch Outlook at all. Instead I get an error message telling me that there is insufficient disk space to run Outlook, and to reinstall it. I have defragged and deleted 100's of GB from the main disk (C drive) but still no go. I bought my old PC several years ago with Windows Vista (32bit) and MS Office 2007 preinstalled, so I don't have the disks to reinstall Outlook, which might fix the issue. Currently, my old PC is behaving like it has never had Outlook installed - it doesn't even appear in the list of programs running on the machine.

Unfortunately I didn't run a backup before updating the AV suite (which I haved previously updated with no issues) so I don't have the PST file on an external storage device. I have tried to back my old machine up to my external hard drive now but with no success where emails are concerned.

I know the PST file is still there because I downloaded a free file recovery tool (Phoenix) and it grabbed everything that is in my email and listed it all for me to see, but to save my emails using this tool would involve paying a fair whack of money that I just can't a... Read more

Answer:Solved: Recover and export PST file from corrupt copy of Outlook 2007

You need to locate the old PST file and copy it to the new machine... no special software is needed. Then in Outlook 2010 use File > Open > Import > Import from another program or file > Outlook Data file.

I was attaching a drive, with all my movies, shows and game + add on's to a new unit that I was making for multimedia when I broke off the part that secures the power sata to the board.  I bought a replacement drive and switched the boards only it's showing a small portion of the drive and clicks slightly as well.  Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31500341AS-Bare Drive

Answer:Harddrive Recover Files

Swapping the boards is only part of the process. You need to make sure the rev of the board and firmware is exact for both drives controller boards ... Do they match?

My problem is that I ran the recovery CDs (for XP) on my harddrive, believing that I had all data securely backed up. Big mistake. It turns out that I cannot read/find the files (pics) on the DVD (my backup). Some files and folders have been copied onto the DVD correctly, but other files appear to be missing and in many cases entire folders are labelled "Folder is Empty" when trying to open them. On one of my DVDs containing the backup, the info provided in "my computer" says that it contains 4.22GB data, but when going onto the DVD itself and adding together all the files and folders, then it adds up to no more than 3GB. It clearly seems like data has been copied, but somehow I cannot see it (same result on 2 different computers).

What could be the problem? Is there an easy way to recover my files on the DVD?

If not, how much of a chance would I have when it comes to recover the files from the harddrive on which I have run the recovery CDs? After running the recovery CDs, nothing has been written or deleted onto the harddrive. The harddrive is 80GB and the pic files I'd like to recover are no more than 1-2GB in total, so there should be a good chance that the new Windows+applications is not going to sit on top of my files.

Apart from an estimate on how much of my files on the harddrive I can hope to recover, can I expect my recovered files be complete, i.e not p... Read more
