how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

Question: how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

Greetings. I would like to find out whether customers read my emails, but without obligating them to use a "read receipt" dialog box. Is there a way I can do this?

I know Constant Contact offers that as part of their service, but I would rather save the money.

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

There are other ways to get confirmations, especially ones that spammers use, but I am not keen on posting them on the forums.

Question: A read receipt

I sent an e-mail through Outlook to a coworker with a subject line that we both know that it is not work related. I am on dial up acroos the city and the location they are at they use Sprint DSL with our company name as the @part.com. I got a read receipt back that states someone other than the person I sent it to read it. It said so and so on behalf of a (which is the first initial of her name didnt really say her full name) read the e-mail with that subject line that we know is non work related. Does that mean that person read the e-mail? If so is there a way to prevent that?

Hello, wondering if anybody knows the answer to this:

In Microsoft Outlook 2000 you have the ability to ask for a read receipt for either every message you send or you can go to View -> Options in the email message and select Read-receipt. Does anybody know whether it is possible to set it up so it asks for a read-receipt when you send an email to a specific user??

Answer:Help with read-receipt.

Not sure what you're after here; when you create an email you can go into the File Properties of the mail window and request a read-receipt. When the recipient receives the mail and open it, they get a message saying that the sender has requested a read receipt, is it ok to send. They either click yes or no so the read receipt is issued, or not. You don't really have another read-receipt options available to you other than that.

I am using the web based gmail application. I just sent an email that I would have liked to have gotten back a read receipt. Is there any way to ask that like Outlook does? I think not but thought I would ask. Thanks

Answer:Gmail Read Receipt?

Gmail does not offer the feature.

Even if it did, the read receipt offered by Outlook et al will only work if the recipient has enabled/allowed the sending of such receipts, and there are not a lot of people that do.

I'm using Outlook 2002. I often send e-mails that I need a read receipt. I know how to turn this option on and off but don't need or want to have it turned on all the time. Is there an EASY way for me to request a read receipt on specific messages only. I think it's a pain to have to drill down through >tools>options>Preferences>e-mail options>tracking just to check read receipt for one message. Then go back through the same procedure to uncheck it. There's got to be a quicker way

I use Outlook Express for my email system.

As a result of sending out some emails with a 'Request Read Receipt' , I have had a few replies which give a blank returned email but an attachment which is a 'Notepad' file of gobbledegook !
In the attachment line , it gives something like " Read_bladdy blah.txt(184 bytes)"
This is instead of the usual

This is a receipt for the mail you sent to
"x y z etc " <x y z a b c @aol.com>;

This receipt verifies that the message has been displayed on the recipient's computer at 09/04/2012 22:09
Can anyone shed any light on why I am getting an attached Notepad file which is unreadable on some replies from some people ? Can they be using , say , Outlook as their email system ?

Hi all

I'm wondering whether someone out there might be able to help me with a frustration that I'm experiencing with Outlook read receipts at present.

I have just started a new job and have set Outlook up as I like it. One of the things includes asking for a read receipt to all emails I send (this is quite important in the role that I am in).

Anyway, more often than not I get read receipts, but every now and then I don't get them, even though I know the recipients have viewed the message their end (have since checked).

I have always got read receipts in the past from these people (when I've sent them from previous jobs or from home) and I know that they haven't changed their settings and have said that they are quite happy to send a receipt.

Is this just a glitch in Outlook or would my new work's server be somehow causing the problem?

I have checked with our IT team at work and explained the problem and all they have said is that the problem must be at the other end (even though it relates to different people and different places). They have confirmed that I have my settings configured correctly.

I'd be really grateful for any advice you could provide.

Bye for now

Answer:Outlook Read Receipt inconsistency

They may inadvertently choose not to send the read receipt unless their e-mail is configured to automatically reply to read receipts.
This feature is not on by default in Outlook.
To enable you need to go into Tools/options/e-mail options/tracking and set it in there to auto reply to read receipts otherwise they will need to say yes to the box that pops up saying the sender has requested a read receipt do you wish to send ? (or something similar)

Arggh, Subject should be: "Read receipt CANNOT go but won't stop trying"
A friend switched ISPs (and thus email domains) but decided to keep his old email address active for a while. The new ISP will not let mail be sent from the old address (receiving is fine). The guy accidentally clicked 'OK' to a request from a sender for a Read Receipt on a message that came in via his old address. Now, every time he opens Outlook, it tries to send the read receipt, but it cannot go out as it is 'from' the old domain. There is no copy of the read receipt in the Outbox or Drafts (or Sent) folders so we cannot simply delete it or change the "From" to the address with the new domain. Is there any way to kill this thing? (FWLIW, the account now is set to receive only, not send, in the send/receive settings. This has not changed anything.)

There is a user that continues to receive the same read receipt from a user she submited a message to on the same email server (exchange).
Both users have deleted the message from their inbox and sent items. We verified that all items have been purged from deleted items as well. Both are using Outlook 2000.
The only thing we have narrowed it down to is everytime the user who received the msg opens outlook the sender receives the same read receipt msg, even after this message has been recieved, read, and deleted.
Are there any known issues with Outlook 2000 occassionally not
designating the message as read?
Has anyone seen this issue before and what steps were taken to resolve it? Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Hi all,
I'm bumping this up because I did a search for the problem and this perfectly describes it. In fact, this original post may well be from my co-worker in IT who really shouldn't have called me a "user" but that's an entirely separate issue.

Just wondering whether anyone has any ideas on what could be causing it. We're using Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2000. Thanks for your help.

I sent an email in OE with a request for a read receipt, but the recipient says she didn't see the request. she's inexperienced and may have just panicked when the window appeared and so clicked No without reading it; but is there a setting that prevents the appearance of the window? My OS is ME, hers XP.

Did you send the email to a hotmail or other web-based email account? (as in you dont require a client like MS OE or Mozilla TB) If you did then the receipt request may become obsolete - not all web-based email accounts support them as far as I know

I am using outlook 2003. I have received a message that requested a read receipt that I said yes to sending. It does not seem to be sending it. It doesnt appear in the outbox so I can not delete it but every thirty seconds my computer flashes up that it has an error trying to send something.
I tried using a program called OutlookSpy which was recommended on another site but that tells me I have used up my free test period and now I have to pay, but I do not even know if it would work.
All my other mail can still go in and out ok but the error messages are driving me nuts.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi,
I use Msoft Outlook and have it set to request read receipts. I need to know when members of our group read their emails, one member uses google mail, also hotmail and NTL. I never get read receipts. Google mail is the account I send the groups communications to. What does he have to do to get it to send read receipts ? I would imagine its the cheapest account google offer that he is using.
I can then keep track on whats been seen which is proving vital.
If google mail is incapable of such, should hotmail be able to do so ? Where is this enabled ? I see one from ntl but only one.

Like another user here, I inadvertently clicked yes on sending a couple of "read receipts" from Outlook 2003.
Now I have constant "Sending Message 1 of 2" popping up.
This happened before and I was able to use the trial version of Outlookspy to solve the problem.
The trial period has ended and I need to correct this again WITHOUT having to buy the Outlookspy tool.
I am not a MAPI developer.
How can I delete the phantom "Read Receipts" without paying for an add-in tool?
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, in advance.

I sent a message requesting a read receipt (it's automatically set up that way). The message was read and the read receipt was sent back simulataneously as usual to my blackberry and my computer Outlook Express (I think it's version 8). It was for a meeting acceptance. I saw the read receipt myself on the blackberry, and then about 15 minutes later the read receipt was gone--from both the blackberry and the computer. What happened to it? All the other read receipts I've gotten from this person for the last year are still there.

So... where did this one go?

They appear in the outbox when I test it. You may have to just change that account so that it can temporarily send it via a free SMTP server, then it should be gone Even if the SMTP server bounces it, it will still get it "out of the loop".

Hello World.

I believe this is my first post on this site.

The issue involves configuring Outlook 2007 to exclude one email recipient from the general setting to request read receipts on all messages I send.

I configured the Outlook 2007 Tracking Options (Tools-->Options, Preferences Tab-->Email Options-->Tracking Options) to request a read receipt for all messages I send out.

One of my contacts works for a company that uses Lotus Notes. The read receipt "flag" in messages I send from Outlook 2007 causes various problems when she receives them. She and I narrowed down the problem to the "read receipt" flag. Tech support on her side has not come forward with a resolution on the Lotus Notes side.

On my side, I have looked for a configuration to exclude messages I send to this particular contact from the general tracking configuration described above. I have not located it.

I also checked the Rule Wizard. The Rules Wizard has an option to selectively request a read receipt from specific contacts. Presumably this option would work where the client is not configured to request read receipts on all outgoing messages. More importantly, there is no Rules Wizard option to specifically exclude recipients when the client is configured to request read receipts on all outgoing messages.

In summary, the issue involves configuring Outlook 2007 to exclude one email recipient from the general rule to request read receipts.

Thank you very much in advance ... Read more

Hi, I have been infected with the Antivirus 2008 :cry and probably other trojans and worms.

I have followed the suggestions in the "Run First" help which has got me about 80% of the way but there are still issues.

I now can access the drives where before it was totally taken over and i couldnt' access C: or task manager. The main issues i am still experiencing is redirection to certain websites; pc running very slowly (I have tried to run the defrag and the message is "Defrag could not work". I tried to install the defrag.inf file and this also didn't work. I also seem to have tracking cookies even though I keep clearing out these.

I would really like to know what is still infecting it and get a 'clean bill of health'. I currently use McAfee and so far it hasnt detected any of the crap that I have picked up. Not sure why that is. I have since downloaded hijackthis (have changed the same on the exe), SUPERANTISpyware and Spyware Doctor.

I have run ccleaner and all instances of Programs from Add/Remove programs but now can't see where I am still infected.

I have attached the two files that i have (I had issues getting the getrunkey.zip).

would really appreciate some help as been at this for hours and not sure where to turn next!! Is there any chance of getting pc back to normal?

I can still see the words VIRUSALERT next to the time in the right hand corner of the screen... any ideas?

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering something...is there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back home...my guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX
C'YA

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

Answer:How to read warning that appears and disappears too fast to read on startup

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

Dont put your mailing address on a forum like this by the way you will end up getting spammed to hell.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Answer:Outlook 2003: not marking read items as read

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
TOOLS/OPTIONS/tab READ
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Maybe that seconds number has been raised above the time you take to scan messages. OE doesnt care IF you peek at a message-it cares HOW long you stare at it.

My CD Drive has started giving me problems.
It doesn't read all the CD I put in (Particularly Audio CDs).

It Plays DVDs fine.
I'm also unable to burn CDs as the system doesn't detect a CD.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Hi

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" When clicked it pops up a window saying: "would you like to update your security software and download registry cleaner?" and occasionally a ballon pops out of the system tray saying "Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

again any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

I sent an email to a few people and I had a company (AdBrite) send me the exact same email I sent to these people, and they told me that they read it and they even sent it to me and it was the exact email I sent out to these people in my address book. How did they hack into my email to read and get that email I sent to those people, or how did they do this period? I used Outlook Express to send it. That just freaked me right out that they sent me the exact same email I sent out. So how did they get into my computer to do that or my email to do that?

Answer:Advice of email read

Don't know if any webmail supports it. But many mail clients (like Outlook Express) support the requesting of read receipts. However, the recipient is normally able to choose whether to send a receipt.Anyone with any sense will always block such receipts (there are many reasons why you would not want anyone to monitor your email viewing activities).

I've wished there was something like this available for a long time -
never have found anything, but there's so many things out there now
that finding anything is a stroke of luck.

I use Firefox and Yahoo.

First, IS there anything already existing to give return notice than an
email has been opened?

If not, how about some of the really savvy folks on this forum figuring
one out that would work with firefox and/or yahoo?

Cheers!

Answer:How about an Add On for notice of read email?

you are discussing a feature that DOES exist in Client Email software
(Thunderbird and others)

option->Return Receipt

The issue is the recipient can configure his/her system to Ignore, Prompt, or always Reply to the request,
so in Email there is no way to ensure you know it was 1) delivered,
2) read or
3) deleted w/o being read
Many web-based email systems also provide Return Receipt, but some do not.

Is there a program that can de code it so I can read it on the screen instead of printing it everytime?

Perhaps I am behind the times but I just had a troubling experience and I want to see if my thinking or my outrage is inappropriate.

A friend asked me to author a press release for him, which I did. It was rejected by charter as being identified as spam. It was not, it is a legitimate press release being published through the wire services.

I also attempted to forward an illegal spam I received to one of the governmental regulatory agencies in order to report it. It too was rejected.

I contacted Charter and they told me the ONLY way to get an email unblocked was to send it to them so they could read it. Now, I don't know about you but I have a real problem with an employee of a company I don't like reading my personal emails. It seems like an invasion of privacy. In the case of the press release, it contained non-plublic information and as such would be highly confidential and, as such, inappropriate for a stranger to have access to.

The Charter supervisor I spoke to assured me their people don't care what's inside the email but there is no way he can speak for them.

Naturally, Charter blocks access to the smtp servers on the websites I own so all email i send from my outlook MUST be sent through charter's mail.charter.net. This too is a new development for me and not too pleasing.

I have been using email since the early nineties and never have run across this before but it has been three years since I was forced to use charter. Is this what... Read more

Recently I have noticed that the links in Outlook Express email do not change colour from blue to red when they are clicked, like they use to.Is this because I have installed Xp service pack 2 or this feature is unavailable in later versions of Outlook Express?I had come to rely on this feature and I am wondering if anybody else has noticed this and knows of a solution.Regards,Jezzy

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

As you will see, I have moved your thread to the Security Forum, where we can watch it a bit more carefully.

Below are the full HJT instructions, which you can use to help you post a log in this thread.

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

When i left clic the x nothing happens and if i right click it i cannot open it up. Can anyone advise me in very simple terms on how to achieve this? Thanks

Answer:Unable to read email

squares with a red x in are pictures, in outlook express, go to tools > options > security and untick 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'. However the risk is that they could be viruses unless you know who is sending you the emails!

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Hi Folks,

I have a good one for you here.

When ever I log on to my web based email using mylaptop, lycos.com it logs me in, then the page does not display. Just a blank white page with "done" written at the bottom toolbar. This happens with IE,Plus Firefox, plus Opera. Yet all other email accounts open fine.

I used a different HD on the same laptop and was able to login no problems, and from my desktop. Making me think it is something on my laptops XP pro that is preventing it from loading my email. All other pages and sites are fine.

I have reset all browser settings, done a system restore and still the same problem.

I am putting this in security because I have not some across this before. How/why is this happening?

Ideas?
