24" monitor or 27"

Question: 24" monitor or 27"

I have a choice to make on a new monitor.

It needs to be VESA mountable and will be for strategy gaming and work purposes. Games like Wargame, Supreme Commander and World of Tanks. I work as a sysadmin so think lots of windows open!

Do I get a 24" monitor like this Benq (recommendations on a different one are welcome)

Or do I get a 27" monitor. If you think 27" what res would you recommend baring in mind I am sporting a 760gtx.

Thanks,

Preferred Solution: 24" monitor or 27"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 24" monitor or 27"

I think 1080P is the best bet for your GTX 760. 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 (27 inch panels) might be a bit too much. It is really personal preference whether you weant a 24 inch or a 27 inch. There are 1080P monitors in both sizes. I recommend Dell, BenQ, ASUS, Samsung, and ACER monitors. There are some other good ones, but I cant think of them off the top of my head.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion desktop computer that is about 4 yrs. old and am running XP with SP3. I recently upgraded the drivers for my Diamond Radeon X1050 video card. I have a flat panel screen (I think it's an Acer - inherited it from my mother) - model no. is L17NCDT if that helps. While working in a particular application like Word or Excel, or playing a game, all of a sudden the monitor goes blank and shows either "No Sync" or "Signal Out of Range." Since I can't see anything when this happens, I have to manually turn the computer off and then back on.Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix this? It gets really irritating since I work from home and may have several windows open at once, then I have to start all over again. Thanks!

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hello Natasha. It's like foning your favorite car mechanic and telling him/her that your car won't start and asking what you can do...   His first question will be "Whats the make and model?"So the first question about your monitor is "What's the make and model?"This fault is 'generally' caused by damage to the connection cable, or incorrect plugging but may be caused by heat stress or a video card problem.  We could accept some details of your pc as well, the more info you supply the better chance of us being able to come up with a reasonably sane diagnosis..Thanks.

Hi,

I am using an Acer 22" widescreen monitor, (x223w) and since I have it I have been getting the "input not supported" error message while booting.
I never took the time to look it up, but today I did. I found lots and lots of solutions, but none fixed it.

What I did learn, is that many people have trouble with this monitor, and get the same error. And in a lot of the cases, it had something to do with the maximum resolution supported by the video card, and the resolution set on the monitor.

I have looked up the maximum res. of my VC, (Nvidia Geforce 8500GT) and it was 2048x1536. So why would the resolution of 1680x1050 bother it?

My OS is Windows XP

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Answer:"input not supported" in boot acer 22" ws monitor

Hi

its not what the video card can output, its what the monitor can handle

If you try to get the monitor to run at a higher rate than it can handle, it wont work and goes blank. this is why XP gives you the 15 seconds to agree to the change....

Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Windows 7 Home Premium

I would provide a screenshot (or three) however that is at the crux of my problem - I should perhaps say my current problem...now, with "7" (I am beginning to tire RAPIDLY of 7, much more quickly than I did with either XP, or Vista).

PROBLEM: When I attempt to "Save As" a document (Notepad, for instance), or even a Paint image, I get a window/page/screen/whatever, that has no "Buttons" ... no button to "Save", no button to "Cancel". Simply NO BUTTONS???

I had this problem the other night, and we "faked" or cheated our way through it, by using the Enter (Return?) Key to advance the cursor (cursor??) to where we wanted to be (well, we "hoped" we were "there", anyway, since we could not "see" what button or drop-down dialog box was selected or highlighted).

It's almost as if I had a "Resolution" problem, whereby the resolution is set too low (say, 800 x 600), things are too big to be seen/won't FIT on the page. However, my resolution is set to the "Recommended" 1366 x 768.

Please help...this Netbook would be a WHOLE LOT easier to throw against a wall than my desktops ever were . . .

Thanks in advance,
glenn . . .
PS, Hoping I was/am clear here...under the drop-down boxes of "File Name" and "Save as Type", there is nothing to select - not "Save" or "OK" or "Cancel" ... NOTHING????... Read more

Hi,

Type dpi into the Search box and choose "Make text smaller or larger" at the top of the search result list. In the window that opens see what it is set to. You want it at 100% rather than 125% or 150%. So if higher than 100% change it back to 100%. Hit Apply. You will need to reboot. See if that helps.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

I just purchased a new PC for the first time in years. For many years I have been running my Dell Trinitron 17" CRT at a resolution of 800 x 600. The reason for this resolution was because I need the text to be a little bit bigger. Anything higher than that and everything is just too small for me.

Now.. my new PC comes with a 20" (widescreen) LCD monitor. It's obviously a little bit bigger than my Dell. What do you think would be a good resolution setting to work with that will enable the text to be a little bit bigger just as I had when I set my older monitor to 800 X 600.

Evidently most people have much better vision than me because almost no one I know goes with an 800 x 600 setting even if they do have an older monitor.

Any input on this would be very much appreciated.

Thank You

DAVID

Answer:Monitor "resolution" suggestions for new 20" (widescreen).

Generally when you use the newer monitors the program will suggest the appropriate resolutions. I think we all use various resolutions dependent upon what we use the computer for. Videos require a higher resolution than other things. Go into your control panel and find your settings and determine what you want and can best use and or see. The higher the resolution the smaller the pixels and the smaller the resolution, (i.e., 800 x 600), the larger the pixels. In today's technology with the online graphics medium resolutions would probably be your best bet.
Check out the options for resolutions and determine your likes.

ps: congrats on your new buy. Hope you enjoy it.

This morning I was playing a game called League of Legend. I had to reinstall the game due to some weird update that kept crashing the game. After installing the game, I changed the resolution of the game to 1600x640 since it was set back to default (not 100% on the resolution numbers, but it was 1600x640 and above). Once I clicked ok, my monitor displayed "Input not supported". So I decided to reinstall the game since there was no other way to fix it. Upon uninstalling the game, my desktop itself displayed "Input not supported". I thought the video card crashed or something, so I restarted my computer hoping to fix it. As soon as the Window loading screen finished, my monitor displayed "Input not supported" again but I heard the sound when it loads the User Select screen. I don't know how to go about fixing this problem. Any suggestion?

Specs from memory:
22" AOC wide screen monitor
Windows Vista 32bit
GeForce 6150SE something something
3gb ram
Resolution was set to 1920x1080 (It's been like that for nearly a year and I never got this problem)

Hi, I am running a dekstop PC with 28" Asus connected via Displayport at 3840x2160p as main screen, a 28" Samsung on the right side at 1080p (connected via Minidisplayport Adapter -> HDMI Adapter -> HDMI cable to screen) and a Samsung SMART TV which hangs above the two monitors on the wall.
The TV is connected with HDMI from Graphic Card going into an AV Receiver. The AV Receiver has an HDMI out which goes to the TV. I need this setup for the playback of DTS HD Master and Dolby TrueHD encoded video material.
My graphic gard is currently ATI Raedon HD 7970.
Somehow - in the Windows display settings it shows that I have connected a 4th right to the Samsung 28". The icon of the monitor doesn't show in the normal gray and is instead more black. When I click on the 4th monitor the option "Disconnect this display" is selected and unlike the other monitors I can't place him somewhere else.
When I open the ATI software it says nothing about a 4th screen. So what is going on here?

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I have recently updated to the creator version
My files end up in unintended destinations. When I click in the documents tab in the sidebar of the documents screen, it takes me to a ?Documents? folder that appears in ?One Drive? group. Any files that I send from my desktop end up there
Those files are also shown when I open the first ?Documents? folder that appears in the ?Quick Access? group. I have similar problems with ?Pictures? folders
I have attached screen shots that I hope will explain. I want all my files of any description to end up in the ?Documents? folder contained in the ?This PC? group. Can anyone help please?
Incidentally, I don?t understand the purpose of ?One Drive?, and don?t believe that I will have a use for it. Can I remove/disable it?

Guys,

I am a little confused with regard to some of the mail options in Outlook Express. (I have version 6) What is the difference between the "Drafts" and "Outbox" folders?

Further how does the "Send Later" option work from the file menu? I always thought that "Send Later" was the same as using "Drafts" but what happend was that I was doing an e-mail, went to Drafts, or clicked on "Send Later" or Outbox and then after I clicked on "Send" doing a regular send, I checked my Sent folder and about 3 copies of the same message were delivered to the same person! (I only sent one message-not 3!)

What is the deal with the "Outbox" folder? Apparently that is not like the Drafts folder....correct?

What's the difference between doing a Save, Save As, and Send Later with regard to OE functions? If I want to save a message that isn't done yet, which of these 3 options should I use? (I.e, I want the message to go to the Drafts folder for example and stay there until I TELL OE to send it.) I think whatever I did above was that I modified my message and then click on where it just automatically sent next time I opened the message. A review of these features would be helpful!

Just for the record, I also use Yahoo Mail and find that so much easier!

Jack

Answer:Please Review OE "Send", "Drafts", and "Outbox" Options

Jack
To save an E-Mail to your Drafts folder for work on later then you use the File\Save option.
If you wish to save the E-Mail in another format such as .EML or .TXT or .HTM then you use the Save as function. You will also be required to specify a folder to save in or use its "My Documents" default.
Send later function if only one e-mail account exists will place the e-mail in the outbox and send it the next time you click on the send receive button. If you have multiple accounts then you can specify which account to send it from.

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

Answer:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

I tried to associate the file extension .txt to a new editor program
with the well known cmdline programs ASSOC and FTYPE.

No, assigning them through WinExplorer menu does not work.
But this is another problem which should not discussed here.

When I type now one of the following alternative commands at the CommandPrompt then Win7 returns me something like:

assoc .txt=txtfile

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: .txt"

or

ftype txtfile=D:\notepad++\notepad++.exe "%%1"

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: txtfile"

Why?

The command above work fine under WinXP

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

I installed Windows 10 and found some apps did not fit the monitor screen (too big). I went in and changed the monitor resolution to a larger size (windows recommended 1920 x 1080) but I tried something larger, and now the monitor has a black screen with a little box moving around which says "input not supported". Not being able to use that monitor to go in and change it back, I hooked up a flat screen t.v. which worked but Windows only showed the current monitor size (which was smaller than the original monitor. I tried the monitor on another computer I have also running Windows 10 and it worked fine. It shows the resolution as 1920 x 1080. When I plugged it back into the original computer I get the same plack screen with "input not supported" so I can't change it there. I suspect the issue is with the registry somewhere in Windows 10 on the first computer, but I have no idea really what the problem is. I've been working on this for a whole day now. Hi all,

This issue really bugs me, every few months it'll happen, one of my three screens (9/10 times it's the Acer), will display as a "Generic Non-PnP Monitor", with this it'll only display in 640*480 (usually 1920*1080, same as the other 2 screens).

This set up works perfectly most of the time, and has done for the last few years, but as I said it comes and goes. I've done a lot of research online and the best advice I can find is that when it happens if I unplug it all, and let the capacitors drain in the monitor and GPU then when reconnecting everything it'll work fine. I've done this before and it's not worked, I've also done it and it's worked. I've also had it in the past where it's just reverted back to how it's supposed to be mid use.

My set up:
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 @ 3.40GHz
Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. CM6330_CM6630_CM6730_CM6830

Display 2: Samsung S24B300 ([email protected])
Display 3: Acer S240HL ([email protected]) <--- Displaying as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor ([email protected])"
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

I've got the latest drivers for all the hardware, I've got the latest windows updates for everything. I've tried older versions of the drivers for the GPU, no difference with the issue.

Just got a new monitor as above and although great resolution etc., everything takes on an oblong or extended horizontal view.

I guess this only what can be expected with these new monitors?

For example, in all my pictures etc. the object is obviously distorted (though only slightly).

I have a 150 cm Plasma Telly that has the same appearance so other than shrinking up the horizontal size of the monitor screen, this is just normal?

That's always what i get when i restart my computer, just before screen goes dark.
I believe that it has to do something with Microsoft updates. The reason i believe this, is that i once reinstalled my PC and didn't have any problem until i didn't update my PC.
And i posted here that thinking my problem was solved but unfortunately i was wrong.

Please if you have any tips on this one let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been playing the game for a few weeks now in my spare time on my Windows 10 desktop and have acquired some bonus packs, a dozen vehicles, upgrades, unlocked 5 seasons, and moved my user rank up to 4824 in the multiplayer ranks amongst various other things. I do not want to lose my progress but for the first time i wanted to upload a ghost the other day and seen that (it seems) I will lose all progress if I log into Facebook now. Also, I noticed that my "local account" doesn't transfer my save data when I log into the game on my Windows 10 laptop (which is super inconvenient because I am rarely home). I seen topics posted that a Facebook sync fixes this but I am afraid I will lose all my progress.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Also, search engines are hard to trigger relative informaiton on the subject. I have no intention of changing over to my Facebook "version" if the progress isn't going to be transferred.
It's just a new problem brought around to headline the Windows 10 updates. I'm sure there will be a wait time, but there has got to be a flood of new Win10 users that are firing up their CC services for a fix.
If I find out that it fixable, I'll get back to this thread.

Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

One of our Win10 laptops has a context menu with "Properties" that uses shortcut key "r". The other uses key "o" which conflicts with "open". I have no idea how it got corrupted. Suggested locations in the registry for context menu doesn't list it. Software tools work on old windows or only delete/disable context menu items.
How can I fix this?

Answer:Context menu "Properties" uses "o" shortcut instead of "r"

I have no idea if this will work but the following tutorial has often helped me fix corrupted file & folder associations. Use option 2 for a few specific cases like Drive and Folder.

I am not sure you can change the fonts though if you wish you can change the text from "Shutting Down" to "Bye Bye" or so, by editing, winlogon.exe.mui.

Hi - I have a thinkpad x61t. When it's in the docking station, whenever I press "shift" "alt" or "ctrl" a little pop up window tells me that key is being pressed. The laptop does not do this when it's out of the docking station. I've looked all over the control panel in vista and can't find any setting.

Any ideas how to switch it off? Driving me nuts! Thanks.

Answer:"shift", "alt", "ctrl" appear onscreen when pressed (see pic)

You mentioned that you have looked in the Control Panel so this may be something you tried already:

Control Panel - Ease of Access Center - Make the keyboard eaiser use - uncheck 'Turn on sticky keys'.

Windows XP SP3
WMP 11

When I open a media folder & select Play All on the Explorer left pane I get the "Copy to" selection window and then the "Move to" window. When I cancel these the files load into WMP 11.

Anyway to get rid of the "Copy to" & "Move to" commands, so that it just loads the media files in WMP 11?

Recently after updating Windows 10 to Fall Creators Update (1709) (I think this started to happen after clicking the "forgot password" button on the sign in screen, just a theory), all messages on the shutdown/boot screen in Windows (for example "Shutting down", "Restarting", "Welcome", ...) became replaced with "Just a moment". It isn't a huge inconvenience, but "Working with updates" also got replaced by it, so I don't know if the computer is installing updates or is stuck at shutting down for example if it takes a long time.
I don't expect anyone to have a solution, I'm just wondering if someone else has this problem. SFC and DISM didn't help me, changing the system language did not help.

Hey guys. This morning I got a really strange error code. When I tryed to update Steam on my PC, this error message popped up;

"The instruction at "0x00172058" referenced memory at "0x00d1004". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

Lately, I have'nt been able to install WoW either, I install it all the way to 100% and then when I try to launch it, I obviously have to re-download all the patches but it prompts me that I have to install it again, even though it is all there.

Tryed downloading the full game digitally off of wow-europe.com too, I click run to get it started, nothing happens and then this message pops up.

"The instruction at "0x00182058" referenced memory at "0x0f070014". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

I don't know what's up with it. My freind told me to run a CHKDSK /R to see if there was anything wrong with my drive and it ran smoothly, although I must say it took about an hour or so.

So, that was complete, tryed to do it again and I still kept getting these error messages. But I saw something on my desktop that wasn't there previously. It is an error log. Here is the error log;

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. I'm using W7Pro and can't find that or a similar feature anywhere. Is it here and I just haven't found it? TIA

Answer:Where is "VIEW", "ARRANGE ICONS BY", "TYPE"

then when you click view in the menu bar group by is in the list

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately, my computer has been infected with a particularly virulent, or relatively new, virus (for which I am currently awaiting help on the Malware removal sub-forum). I wanted to ask, though, if anyone else has had to deal with this particular Trojan before because, from what I have been able to find out, it (i.e. Trojan_Win32.Generic, or "TidyNetwork.com") doesn't seem to have a remedy as of yet. I've checked just about every virus database I could and have come up empty handed every time. What's more, I've downloaded and ran half a dozen different top-shelf Anti-virus' scans and removal programs, only to end up disappointed.

Does anyone know what the deal with this thing is?

Best,

John

I have a dual monitor system and I noticed that sometimes (occasionally) one of the screens has a condition where its windows stop accepting mouse clicks. I can still alt-tab into things and use arrow keys other keyboard buttons, but mouse clicks do not respond on that screen. In a few seconds it usually goes away.

Some backstory: just one month ago, I started to think of what will be the other use of our TV and it's HDMI cable. When I cleaned out my PC, I noticed that my card has an HDMI port so something came into my mind; and after 2 weeks, I decided to use my TV for a larger monitor and it works fine. In the coming weekend, I'll work with 2 displays. I'll use the 32" (capable of 1080p) as the main monitor and my stock 20" as a side monitor. So I can still do things while doing other things? I may not be able to connect with my internet since the positioning of the modem and the TV is away from each other so I can't immediately ask for support nor receive it. Also, is it possible to have different backgrounds in each monitor? And another question: if there will be two displays (with different contents being shown from one another), will it mean that the GPU load will double? What programs will I use? Is there already a built in program?

Specs of GPU and the displays:
Palit NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 2048 MB (VGA, DVI and HDMI)
Stock 20" HP monitor
LG 32LF20FR 32" 1080p TV (from what I can remember, it's from 2009)

Answer:Setting up a multi-monitor display w/ a 20" HP monitor and a 32" LG TV

Hi there
the easiest way is to use WINDOWS + P and simply use the EXTEND option - then you can move things at will between the two monitors. Remember though the resolution will be that of the device having the SMALLEST resolution (not necessarily the smallest screen !!).

For different Backgrounds you could use the desktop program in the sysinternals suite - this gives up to 4 "Virtual desktops" that you can split out over the two monitors.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/s.../bb842062.aspx

Extract the DESKTOPS.EXE file - works on W8.1 too

Couple of Caveats with DESKTOPS.EXE though -- desktop version of IE only works from DESKTOP 1 - if you start IE again from desktop 2,3,4 then the windows are stacked up in desktop 1.

Charms etc only operate from primary desktop (desktop 1)

Toolbars, desktop icons etc all work correctly on each desktop with the exceptions outlined

Cheers
jimbo

Made a HUGE mistake, messed with the settings under "My Computer" > "Manage" > "Services> and also the "Local Users". Now having trouble, can not see my "Start and Task Bar", the "windows"+ ''e" is no longer working.

How can I restore the Services & the Local Users account without having to reinstall my whole computer? I am afraid I will loose lots of files... I do not remember what exactly I changed, but some of the "Services" I changed to "disable" now when I try to open properties and change them back, I am unable. The right click to get to properties is not working.

Your help is highly appreciated.

Answer:How to restore the defaults for "services" under "My Computer" > "Manage>

I am not sure about the "quick" way of restoring, but what you can do is go back to services, "RIGHT-CLICK" the white area select "HELP" then the third option is "Default settings for services"

you can see what the default was and manually restore it. I have tried to copy and paste it below

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

hello all,

using "dual monitor" software program. mouse would switch screens with my two monitors. replaced one monitor with a new one - now mouse will not move from screen to screen unless the setting is "duplicate displays". If i choose "extend displays", the mouse will not switch. I can see on the second screen an update window from the "dual monitor" program but cannot move the mouse over to that screen.

one monitor is on dvi and the other on vga but that was not a problem with the old monitor.

suggestions? I am considering a stand alone graphics card with dual dvi.

Answer:problems with "dual monitor" program and mouse changing screens...

Not the proper answer to your question obviously, but the best (most probably) program to manage multiple displays is DisplayFusion. You may try it. Usually it satisfies the users.
DisplayFusion: Multi-Monitor Taskbar, Multi-Monitor Screen Savers, HotKeys, Multi-Monitor Wallpaper, Windows Logon Changer and more!

I have a Yiynova tablet monitor and its been working fine for about a month. I recently tried to download the beta version of a NVIDIA GeForce update (bad idea) and had to reinstall a previous version. After that, things started to go south for my tablet.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the tablet driver, and tried to plug it in a different USB port and it came up with the same message.

Is there a step that I'm missing?

I have dual screen setup, and that's working fine, but the driver that senses the pen just isn't installing, even though I installed the driver program.

I appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.

Answer:Yiynova tablet monitor "device driver failed to install"

The problem wasn't solved, but I believed I narrowed down the problem. The driver doesn't seem to fully install.

I'm having A LOT of connectivity issues with my ISP and it has been a constant issue for almost 2 years. When I call and complain they always give me the same BS excuse and give me the same song and dance. They send out a tech that plays around at the outside box and tell me that they can change the line coming to my house. It's all BS and I know it after 20+ service calls and them doing the same thing each time.

I want to run whatever network diagnostics I can run from home based systems or web provided systems. I have a web server I can utilize on an external host if need be to monitor my IP. I can run anything on windows or Linux if that helps. I just want to provide proof of the services being provided vs that which is being paid for. This is also on a business connection..

It has gotten to the point that I need to reboot my modem each time I watch something on Netflix. My transfer rates are about 20% of advertised.

I know this forum isn't a dedicated networking forum and I've had a hard time finding one that is dedicated to computer networking. Does anyone know of any that are?

PC just updated to 10 Anniversary.

I have three monitors, I want to remove the start button and clock from second/third monitor. (I.E A blank task bar)

I do not want to disable the second/third monitor's task bar, I like the applications running that appear on said monitor to appear in the task bar of that monitor.

I had this setup on the previous build, but can't remember for the life of me how I did it (No third party software)

I have a old Compaq Computer which runs with Windows XP system. I have a w2207 Flat panel monitor hooked up on it. The computer and monitor were safe kept in boxes for about three years, or so. This last week, I got them out of their boxes and connected PC to monitor and all cables. I turned computer on and worked just fine. The open screen showed Windows logo and soon after, my desktop screen. I left it running the entire day. I did not do anything with it and at late night, I turned off and went to bed.
The next day, after tuning it on, the monitor showed the message : monitor going to sleep". It did not open after moving mouse or hitting space bar. I turned computer off, on again and monitor stills on same sleeping mode. So, I research the internet for other tips on how to wake up monitor.

I found one I have no tried before: turn PC off, turn it on and press windows logo key in keyboard until wakes up monitor. It worked on my first try. The computer and monitor were OK and ON.

I remember I had to update Windows and connect it to the Internet. To be bale to do just that, I had to be able to connect to the internet. So, I did the "connect to a network" step. The computer asked to restart it. When computer came back from restart, the monitor went to the "monitor going to sleep" mode again, and never woke up.

I tried Monitor in my laptop and worked just fine. I turned computer on and off and fan inside of it works just fine. Light on power bottom do... Read more

Please guys i need help...
My AOC E1621SWB monitor always say "Input not Support" after the Windows 7 logo... I tried running it in Safe mode and every other option i have but still it says the same thing...
Before I had that message I am installing Windows 7 64bit because what i had was just 34 bit (i just bought a kingston DDR3 4GB RAM and i have 2GB RAM also, i wanted to maximize my RAMs and everybody on the internet tells me to go 64... so that's why i did.)

I Installed the 64 bit with the Custom option because i like to build it from the ground up.. after some percent of Installation, of course my PC restarted and boom that's where the dreadful "Input not Support" message came... I tried Plugging in and out the VGA cable, the power plug and turning on and off the monitor but nothing works...
I don't know if it has any connection with the Win7 installation but as far as i can remember this was the first time it happened.

Some Facts you may also want to know:
1. there is nothing wrong with my VGA cable because i tried it with my laptop and it works.
2. i think there is also nothing wrong with the PC's VGA port because i can still see the logo etc at the startup.
3. I don't know if it helps but i have an AMD Athlon II Processor with NVIDIA GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a
4. I have searched every forum here, in Fixya and tomshardware but i can't find any solution..

I've had my HKC 21.6" monitor for over a year now, and i've been using it with my PC at 1920 x 1080 with no problems.
However, two days ago the screen suddenly went black and displayed the message "Out of Range". I've had to drop the resolution to 1680 x 1050 in order to see anything.

I've tested the monitor with the same VGA cable but with a different computer - this worked fine, so i'm assuming it's something to do with my computer.
I've tried reinstalling my video drivers, but this had no effect. My card is an ATi Radeon HD 5770, haven't had any problems with it before.

Obviously this is pretty irritating since anything other than the native resolution tends to look ugly.

Any help appreciated

Answer:Monitor displays "Out of Range" at 1080p (graphics card issue?)

Best thing I can advise is. Grab the latest WHQL ATI and CCC drivers.

before installing, uninstall your ati drivers in safe mode and your monitor from device manager.

Boot into normal mode and install the drivers. Make sure in setting you take off check for only display resolutions this monitor can handle,,, ok give it a shot.. let us know.. gl

This is a strange one so I hope somebody can help give me their opinion.

My girlfriend's sister was upset the other day when I arrived at her house because she said her HP Pavillion XP computer (which is at least 5 or 6 years old) crashed and Microsoft called her about a virus. I immediately told her to hang up because it was a scam and Microsoft doesn't call people about viruses. So then I asked what happened and she said all of a sudden she got a blue screen and then it shut down on her. Like 5 or 10 minutes later she got a phone call saying they were Microsoft and they detected a virus on her computer.

I went in and checked the error logs and the only thing I could find were several errors involving "FTsata2" which looks like it's been going on for a little while at least. I ran her Avira, which was up to date, and ran Spybot, and no viruses were found. She said that Avira's "Luke Filewalker" popup came up before the crash, but no virus or activity was logged for Avira when I checked. I then ran ccleaner to be safe, and then rebooted. It seemed to start up fine, so I left.

About 2 hours later, I came back and her monitor was no longer working (also an older HP). I turned off the computer with the power switch and powered it back up, and the monitor didn't react. Just random flashes, but the blue power button kept blinking, which I found out indicates a problem with the monitor. I took it home to try it on my PC, and sure enough, the monitor is dead.

Answer:Weird set of issues - crash, "Microsoft call" and dead monitor

Is the power source of the monitor independent? If its power comes from the PSU I'd start looking badly at the PSU. There is no way to damage a monitor through a VGA/DVI cable. It is data-only.

In other cases (more likely), my guess would be that the area where she lives did experience voltage spikes, and while the PSU managed to maybe survive this and protect the PC (of course this caused the crashing), the monitor did not.
The main reason why I always recommend people to get a decent UPS (Uninterruptible power supply). At worst it's the UPS that dies.

I'd call coincidence on the "microsoft" call, that is and has always been a scam. Unless they got up a few notches and start making voltage spikes to then farm people scared by the bluescreens).

As for the BSOD, please follow these instructions and upload the results, so a BSOD analyst can have a look at them and see what did happen.

I was checking my system configuration and happened across this weird one!

Note the spelling:
"Monitor Virutal Wlan Service" - "Virutal" rather than "Virtual" but either way, I can see no reference to such a process on the net.

Searching instead for "Virutal Wlan" turns up a number of items, some suggesting disable a process and some suggesting an infection.

I am running Windows 10 having gone via the 8.1 route without any serious problems. Used to be a member of the Seven Forum. Not really a technical expert, rather a fairly competent pensioner!

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Howdy doodles, here's one for you:

I have this PC I got 3 years ago, it's been great until now:

AMD Athlon 64 @ 2 GHz
2 gigs of ram in dual channel
Ati X1600XT video card
some seagate 160gb HD
420W PSU
LG L1750SQ monitor (17 inch)

Here's what happens:

-I turn on the power (press the button on the extension cord my pc components are connected to - monitor, pc, printer, speakers)

Monitor goes into standby as expected, speakers are on

-I press the on button on the pc and it powers up, I get a green splash screen saying A8R-MVP which is my motherboard, for a few seconds

-then it beeps once, it's a short, singular beep (I've read that this can matter) and winxp starts loading, I get the xp splash screen

-just as xp finishes loading and I'm supposed to get the first glimpse of that glorious microsoft desktop BOOM! the monitor goes into power saving mode (yellow LED)

However, the pc itself continues to function normally; if I randomly start clicking and pressing enter I can hear sounds from games and other programs, so the pc works

I've tried switching the ram around, removing the battery for the bios for a while, reconnecting the cables; I don't know what's causing it, this is a fresh OS install and it did happen a couple of times before I did the reinstall but it fixed itself and the monitor worked upon restart

another thing to note is that if I remove the drivers in safe mode (I'm in safe mode right now) for the video c... Read more

Hi!

I've just bought and installed my brand new Acer S243HL LCD Monitor to my computer. I've followed the instructions and done everything as it should be in the set-up process. The problem is, I got this frame in 1920 x 1080 and 1776 x 1000 modes. I'm using a HDMI-cable.

This is how it looks like:

Here's my computer specs:

Memory: 8192 MB RAM
Hard Drive: 1,77 TB Total

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Solved: Acer S243HL LCD Monitor "black frame" problem

/BUMP!

I've found out some more since last time. I brought the monitor back to where I bought it, and it worked completely fine, so I came up with a conclusion.

It has to be something with my graphics card or something. But that is also actually a bit weird, 'cause I get the frame even while booting! Why!?

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the Computer Hope Forum,I have turned to Computer Hope many times in the past to solve all manner of problems, and I have yet to encounter a technical issue which I couldn't solve using the knowledge which resides on this site. Until today, that is.First, I will elaborate on the relevant aspects of my setup:GFX Card: ATI Mobility Radeon 5650GFX Card Drivers (According to Windows): 9.2.0.0Monitor: HP 2309mOperating System: Windows 7 x64Catalyst Control Center Version: 2012.0928.1532.26058The precise nature of my problem is as follows. Recently after connecting my computer to TV at a friend's place (via HDMI), I came back home and plugged the computer into my HP 2309m monitor. I was greeted with a screen exactly like the images attached to this message. I have never had problems with this monitor before, so this came as quite a surprise. In an attempt to fix this problem, I went into the advanced display settings and tried to adjust them to change the frequency and resolution. However the settings read exactly the HP2309m's native resolution and frequency (1920x1080 60 hz). In addition, I also used the 'Restore to Factory Settings' option on my monitor. But all of this was to no avail. The screen would display with that strange color pattern as shown in the attachments and eventually go to sleep. When changing the resolution and frequency didn't help, I decided to re-install my video drivers. I did this by going to Deskto... Read more

Hi, i've read some other posts about hard faults not being an issue, eg:

Hard faults!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the same principal apply if you've disabled the pagefile? I've got 16gb of RAM and on advice disabled the HDD swap.

I get these 'faults' consistently, but not a great deal. It doesn't seem to go over 3-4 a second and is often less than that. It's not 3-4 for every program at the same time, it seems random.

Thanks

Answer:Resource Monitor Memory "Hard Faults", no paging file.

Any time a program accesses the HDD, aka., a file that is not in memory will create a hard fault. In either case there is no reason for you to disable the pagefile.

My brother game me a lenova computer. Vista operating system, and some free antivirus software.

I got a message from Security Essentials that I didn't like, and since I assumed it was just an antivirus program, I deleted it and installed Panda.

Then I got a message saying Activate Windows. It would go away after a few seconds, so I never clicked on it. Besides, Windows was working just fine.

Just put the computer to sleep, tried to wake it up, it wouldn't wake up.

Did a hard restart.

Now, the screen comes up with the message, To interupt normal post, press enter. I press enter, nothing happens.

The little green light that should flicker to indicate hard drive is churning away does not flicker.

I put in the System Restore disk, and hit F12, and now it gives me the "To interrupt normal ost, press enter.
Below that, the Entering boot menu

Finally after about 5 minutes the boot menu came up and I was able to boot it using the system recovery disk.

I'm used to a Mac reboot where it will just start up and show me the hard drive etc.

But what this boot disc wants to do is reinstall Windows entirely, which I don't want to do.

Is that my only option?

Thanks for any help.

(And yes, I'm a newbie and should not have been messing with things I know nothing about!)

Answer:Monitor frozen on "To interrupt normal post, press enter"

And I see this message finally showed up. I'd posted it about 10 minutes ago, it never showed up, and in that time the computer had finally booted up of its own accord and it's now back to normal.

But for how long?

Hardware/software: 400w power supply, asus p4s533, crucial 512 mb ddr 2100 ram, intel p4 2.0a , nvidia 128mb ti4200, soundblaster audigy, western digital 80 gb hdd, liteon cdr, xp pro.

Computer previously worked. On boot, monitor appears to receive no signal, and the asus talkback/speach report feature loops the phrase "system failed memory test". What are possible sources for this problem?

I havent had a chance to troubleshoot it yet, but find it suprising i received that error because I've ran and passed memtest many times in the last few m onths, although i guess its posssible it somehow croaked last 2 or 3 weeks sometime? Last time it was on Comp was acting weird. IE Explorer windows would keep hanging, and when i minimized programs the image stayed up on screen even after ctrl alt del to end them. I updated anti virus and full scan that passed fine so i turned off computer, and woke up to this, ironicly also friday the 13th lol.

Answer:on boot, no monitor signal, "system failed memory test"

I would start with the following:
[NOTE:] When clearing CMOS, remove power, and press power button to discharge motherboard.

1) Clear CMOS. If it boots, then go into CMOS and load setup defaults
2) Remove all cables and extra PCI cards. Only run Power Sup., Vid card, Proc., Memory, MoBo. Clear CMOS. If powers, add one card/cable at a time and see where it stops. If it doesn't power, proceed to step 3.
3) Place the mem. chip in another slot. Test. If more than one stick, try one at a time in different slots.
4) Try different Vid card.
5) Try separate power supply
6) Check Proc. (Too much thermal grease, smoke smell, cracked edges)
7) Remove MoBo from case. Look for burn marks. If you know what you are doing, try running step 2 without the case to see if it posts.

Did I miss anything? Please add if you think of anything.

Hello, I have read several different threads all over the internet regarding a resolution problem in Windows 7 that has to do with the resolution, refresh rate, etc. I have tried to force a "custom" resolution using nVidia's Control panel, but it doesn't seem to do anything to fix the issues.

I have 2x22" monitors, and while using Windows XP, there was never a problem such as this.

It seems as if the monitor that is labeled as "Monitor 2" cannot have a proper 16:9 resolution set, and it is making "Monitor 2" be blurry.

Monitor 1 is set to 1680x1050, which is correct and everything is clear as day, but the best I can do for monitor 2 is 1600x1024, and that just makes it blurry and difficult to read, which is an extremely bad strain on my eyes.

Any solution or tips that I can try would be great, I was hoping a new driver would solve my problem so I was waiting for one to come out, but since the newest one came out yesterday 11/26, and it's been over a month Windows 7 is out, I am losing hope, so now I must ask for help.

Thank you so much for any help!

Answer:Dual Monitors, Monitor 2 "Blurry" Incorrect Resolution

Hey.
1680 >>> 1600

and

1050 >>> 1024

is enough of a difference to makes things blurry? I don't think so. The difference is minute and practically indiscernable (less than 8%.)

You could try locating and installing the .inf for the 2nd monitor but 1600 might be the max resolution it can go.

You could also try making a custom res for the monitor.

First post to this forum. Been using Xandros for a couple years and love it.

Recently built a Desktop and installed Xandros on it.
Xandros desktop displays OK.

However, when using the file manager
or when using any browser on the internet, the refresh or
renew rate on the screen is EXTREMELY slow.

My machine is as follows:
Mobo: MSI K9VGM-V, with VIA K8M890 chipset

Video Board: Onboard (on mobo) VIA Chrome9 HC IGP Family,
S3 Graphics, 128 Mb, ver. 6.14.10.101

Monitor: Dell SE177FP Flat Panel, normally set to
60Hz, 1024 x 768 res.

In Xandros settings, the display is set to 24 bit True Color.

What other info might be needed?

I have changed resolutions, spent the last 2 weeks perusing various sites
hoping to find a similar problem. Tried to install Windows-type drivers
to run under Xandros. NOTE: I am still new and learning Linux so I do not
know much about drivers, linux executables etc, yet.

1. Has anyone had this problem before?
2. Does anyone have a solution?
3. Can anyone advise me where to look or
what direction to take?

BTW, I am also running Ubuntu, and it also refreshes slowly, altho
not quite as bad as Xandros.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

Hello Hayley,
The problem is that your monitor is not compatable with your computer, here's what you need to try, i dont know how much you know about PC's so i will assume you are a beginner, (sorry if your not),

Start your computer and while it is booting up (starting) press F8 (top row on keyboard) every secound or so.
You will come to a screen like this or something like it,

Use the up/down arrows on your keyboard to highlight the "enable low resolution video (640x480)" option and press enter.
Good luck and post your result.
