Preferred Solution: Thumnail view text details missing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So far I'm pretty happy with Win 7, but one new feature is downright painful for me. In the Details view of Windows Explorer, the column headers and all columns except "Name" are displayed in a faint gray-on-white text. My eyes are unusually sensitive to low contrast, and they start to ache after only a few seconds' viewing.

I have the same problem on the web, where the low-contrast look has been stylish for several years, but a Firefox add-in called Stylish lets me change color schemes of sites I visit a lot.

If anyone can tell me how to convince Windows to use a normal black-on-white font for those columns, I'll be very grateful.

I do know about the high-contrast themes, but they're a sledge-hammer solution for a carpet-tack sized problem.

Many thanks,

AJ

Answer:Painfully Faint Text in Explorer Details View

Hi AJ and Welcome to Seven Forums,

If you have a LCD screen you might want to try ClearType it makes the words alot sharper and darker..

To turn this feature on click the start menu and search for ClearType and then Click on Adjust clear type text and it will give a sample of each style of clear type and you pick the best one..

Hope this Helps..

I have a simple problem. I have a folder called 'pics' and in this folder I have ... pics.

My problem is I can't find a way in Windows 7 to be able to get a thumbnail view of this pics rather than the generic icon used for JPEG and GIF files. Can someone please tell me how to be able to see the images in thumbnail view or maybe just be able to preview them once selected in the preview pane window? I've Google'd this and I know I can hit the 'alt' button and access the 'view' menu but nothing works.

I have a Lumia Icon and vcards sent to me via text do not come through with all of the contact info that is sent. I've had several iphone users that I know try it and some info comes through but not all. Typically email addresses and street addresses don't come through. Why doesn't this work and will the WP 8.1 /Denim update fix it? I run a business and I need this functionality to work correctly. It's embarrassing to ask someone to email a contact because my phone can't recognize it. I love Windows Phone, but my business can't suffer because of it. Anyone else have this issue? I'm seriously thinking about returning my new Icon for a Droid Turbo or iPhone because of this.

Answer:Why am I missing contact details when receiving contacts thru text/SMS?

If a drawback in your phone affects your business then its better returning it and getting what works best for you

Hi, I've downloaded a bunch of AVI's all from the same source. After installing KLITE Codec Pack all of them worked with the exception of one which only played the soundtrack and showing the general AVI icon instead of the thumbnail. After restarting the computer it played the AVI fine (picture&sound) but the thumbnail was still missing.

All of the threads I've found are dealing with all AVIs missing thumbnails, but in my case it's only this one particular file. Here's what I've tried:
- Downloaded the AVI again but it was still missing thumbnail.
- Compared it to the other AVIs (using abcAVI) to make sure some different codec was used but they all seem to be the same.
- Used DIVFix++ software.
- Deleted thumbnails using Disk Cleanup but while new thumbnails were created, this one is still missing it.

Anyone had the same issue before? Any way to force Explorer to create the thumbnail?

I know it's not a big deal as long as the AVI works fine, it's just bugging me.

Answer:AVI thumnail missing for particular file

Whoops! I didn't read carefully.
Try this: enable show hidden and system files. Go to that folder and disable thumbnail view (try icon or list instead). Then delete thumbs.db. Then revert to icon view. Press F5 to refresh if necessary.

Hello!

I've developed a weird problem that maybe someone can help me solve: about a week ago, all of a sudden, when I went into Windows Explorer and then clicked on My Documents and then Thumbnail view. The text describing the folders and documents was missing! The same thing happened in My Pictures. However, both of these folders will display the titles in any other view (list, icon, etc). I have customized these files with photos from their contents for thumbnail view, but I did that many months ago, and I still had the title text then. My Documents and My Pictures are the only two folders that do this. All others in thumbnail show the title text. I haven't been able to figure out how to fix this. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Pekstrom

Answer:Missing Text in Thumbnail view

Quick answer: hold down the shift key while opening the folder.

I need a little help with something that seems simple. I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I have changed the columns in Details view in a folder. However Windows is not populating those columns, so what am I missing? This holds true on both my network drives and my local drives, so I checked my indexing options and they are set to index my local drives, so I assumed that should have at least worked. Any help would be very much appreciated.

For Windows 7, is there a list of the 'Details' available in the Windows Explorer folder view called 'Details' which has an explanation for each of them? Most of them are simple but some leave me scratching my head.

Answer:explanation of 'Details' in Windows Explorer 'Details' view

The "Details" which are available are those you see when a list of files is in "Details" view (as opposed to "Icons" or "Tiles" views. In "Details" view, depending on which column categories you have enabled, you are shown such things as filesize, file-date, filetype etc. If you then right-click any column header, you can choose to hide or show more information columns.I can't see how any of that can leave you scratching your head as it's no different to previous versions of Windows in that respect.

This is something that has puzzled me for ages. I open a directory which has some sub-directories and some stand-alone files. I do view details. The file sizes are displayed, but the folder sizes are not displayed. In order to find a folder that doesn't match size with the source, I have to go through the painfully tedious task of right clicking and selecting properties on each folder. With XP, there was a tool I installed which allowed me to display the folder size, but the tool doesn't work in Windows 7.

Is there a way one can easily view the folder sizes without having to right click and select properties for each individual folder?

Question: Details View

Am i missing something or can I not simply just display all folders in details mode automatically. No exceptions.
I go to Windows Explorer -> Organize ->Folders and Search Options -> View Tab
Then i am in a folder that I've manually chosen as "Details".. and i hit "Apply to Folders" button.

Well it seems to go away after a while and the folders start showing things in gimp-mode (ie not details mode).

Answer:Details View

I mean the main thing is that it does not apply details mode to similar folders everywhere. I wouldn't even mind detailed view in picture folders. I just want details consistently.

I just reinstalled win7 on this machine (clean install of win7 pro x64) and am trying to set it up the way it used to be. Right now on any program (notepad, whatever) when I do a "save as" it shows a details view of whatever is the default folder for that program, but then when I navigate to save it on the desktop it shows icons, instead of the details view (see attached screenshot). Same things happens when doing a "file open".

Can anyone tell me what setting I need to change to get it to be a details view instead of an icon view? Thanks

Answer:want details view, not icon view, for "save as"

I am unsure as I am currently on a win 8 machine, but I would look inf cpanel>folder options>view. I believe (from memory) there are some relevant options there.

I think if you set up the focused window the way you want then click apply to all folders it may do the trick

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & explorer.exe

Answer:when i drag & drop i want to see details view

Go to advanced system settings. Under Performance, click 'Settings'. Under Visual Effects/Custom, uncheck: 'Show window contents while dragging'. Click Apply and OK.

However, that checkbox may already be unchecked. If so, uncheck the box 'Use visual styles on windows and buttons'. That makes Windows 7 look like XP to some extent, but so what.

That should at least get rid of the large icon, which I could not stand. It may not give you "details".

yet another round of "ZT doesn't like changes that don't help him" here.

as we all know, vista (and 7) have all kinds of derpy templates for what details are shown when you pick "details" view in windows explorer. but I don't need to have half the ID3 tag of a given mp3 sprayed all over the details view along with a totally meaningless "out of five stars" rating thing. and having directories change to that if ever there's more than a few mp3s in them gets annoying; I value meaningful details; filetype, file size, date modified, etc. is there any decent means to keep myself from having to go and manually fix every directory and subdirectory that gets music in it?

Answer:explorer "details view" templates...

IMO...Windows is designed to provide a number of options to the varied owners of PCs. I consider this a plus.

I employ details view on my systems...but the details I reflect for a given folder/directory...vary according to the content. I don't need music file data on non-music files...and I want to see certain data in folders containing music.

I put all of my music in one partition...and then set the default detail settings for everything in that partition, choosing only those options I am interested in (bit rate, artist, size, etc.).

That strategy serves my needs and that's the only way that I can think of to easily get like items reflecting the same details in Windows.

I am hoping that some Windows guru will help me with this question.

I have music file folders (mp3 albums ripped from original CD's or purchased from Amazon.)
When I view these mp3 files, I don't like to see the default columns. Here's what I see:

Name / date modified / type / size.

I can highlight these files in the folder, right click the column name and select or deselect to chose whatever I want. However, I want to be able to change the default stucture to make it permanent.
So, this is what I prefer if it is possible:

Name (track name with mp3 ext.) / # (track number) / title (track name) / Contributing artists / Album

This would be awesome for my needs.
Is it possible?

Thank You.

I don't want in any case to see a "type" and "length" columns.

How can I set a details view really for all folders on my hard disc even when it contains *.avi videos or other multimedia stuff?

Answer:How to set details view in WinExp for really all folders?

Well the same way as always (XP has always had this problem too). But it's only a partial fix.

Go to the root of each drive. Set the view as you want it Then on the "Organize"->"Folder and search options"->"View" tab, click "Apply to all folders".

The only problem is when new folders are created they are created in "automatic" mode and the problem can slowly creep up again.

The only way to get it to stick permanently is to use something else like Explorer++

Ever since the Graphical User Interface was introduced, EVERY single folder by default, from mac to Windows, is in some kind of little details view with a little folder icon next to the folder name. Well, for the sake of Start Screen's visual approach, I think it would be best to go from Details view, to Large Icon view in Windows Explorer. For the naysayers, the amount of viewable folders and files actually remains the same in most cases and usually increases the amount, even with the Details pane in Windows 8 enabled. Without the Details pane, the amount viewable increases.

Proof of such...

Versus....

Answer:I think it's time to move away from the Details view.

If you use large icons you loose the ability to see the detail provided by additional columns. It's fine for basic folders where there are few details, but for folders that contain photographs, music or many other categories, it just doesn't work. Personally, I'll stay with details view, which also consumes less space when used in conjunction with filters appropriate for the content.

I have also gone back to the factory setting 3 times thinking I did something wrong cuz one time I couldn't get the preview pane (pain) or the navigation pane to remove. Is there a way I can set the folder Details view for Pictures WITHOUT changing the Video details view.
I want the length of my movies but not the length of my pictures and the diamensions of my pictures but not the diamensions of the movies etc.

Answer:Folder details view setting

Pictures and videos are generally uploaded to different folders, so the settings in each of the folders should be independent from the other. But if, for some reason, you have your pictures + videos in the same folder, I think the only way you could do that would be a work-around --- to manually transfer all of your pictures or videos to a separate folder. That way, in each of the folders, by right-clicking on the settings options and selecting 'More' at the bottom of the list, you have several hundred specific options to choose from and select.

I have recently not been able to run sfc /scannow. It gets to 15% and says it cannot continue. I normally run it twice a week so know it is recent. There have been no software or hardware changes except Windows updates recently. Otherwise the system runs fine. It is not a virus or malware. If it can be fixed, I would appreciate knowing how, but would rather do a clean install than spend 5 hours trying to fix it. Thanks. I have also run checkdisk F/ R/
sfcdetails.txt

Answer:Can someone read sfc details text

In the first place, why are you running the sfc tool twice a week? It's not a maintenance tool and there's no point in running it unless you're having severe problems with Windows - and even then, other steps should be attempted before going to sfc.

As for your log file, it complains about t2embed.dll which belongs to Microsoft's TrueType rendering engine. I think there was a recent security patch affecting exactly this file, and having that patch installed might be what's throwing sfc off...although it shouldn't.

Honestly, if there's nothing else obviously wrong with your system I wouldn't worry about this error for the time being and just stop using sfc.

By default, Windows XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder, and its view setting will be lost. The information is stored in the registry by two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell.

Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value.

Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size).

Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

Now go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam.

Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).

Close the registry and reboot.

Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400

Always remember to back up your registry.

Windows 10 insists that the camera folder on my phone is going to be viewed as though it contains music and won't allow changing its default to just generic file details.

Thus the details view header has a bunch of categories that are useless for photos, track name, duration etc. To get the date I have to right click on the header and check Date Authored. It's a DCIM folder for *photos* so why is it defaulting to settings for music?

Is there a way to hack this to make it by default use the general files details view for all folders, no matter the type of files in them? 99.99% of the time I only need to see the file name, type, size and date, no matter what kind of file it is.

Is there a way to make files and folders mingle together when using details view in Windows XP?

The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.

I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Please post a reply if you know a fix or workaround for this. Thanks!

Answer:mix files and folders in explorer (details view)

Not perfect though, because of the letter headers, takes longer to scroll.

I've been using an install of Win7 home prem for 7 months. About every month a feature fails.

This month the 'details view' in windows explorer randomly changes to big non-discript icons. It undoes the general purpose and apply to subfolders on some, seemingly the most used folders.
This is really annoying. anyway to regedit this permanently for all?

I have a question regarding mp3 music files in folders. I keep these files (all album folders) in music folder on desktop. When I click any subfolder of these albums, I'd like to view them by track number, file (song name), artist and album name. (as shown in the screenshot below).
The problem is Windows 8.1 default gives me certain details such as type, size, date created. I know that I can select and unselect the little boxes after I right click the column header.

Is it possible to change the default for these details?

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

I have been playing around with this for a while now and can't seem to do it.

Its there a way to show the year and size of a folder in a folder under details view?

What I mean is this. I have a folder that contains roughly 500 videos. Every video is contained in its own folder with the same name. What I would like is to be able to have the size of each folder and the year show in Details view.

EG...
Name | Size | Year
Video | 3gb. | 2005

Can this be done or am I just dreaming?

Answer:Windows Explorer Details View Question

Yes you can do it by applying following settings:

Open Windows Explorer (Shortcut : Windows Key + E))

Click on View as shown in below picture.

Now select Details as shown in below picture:

It will display your folder with all the details.

Hello all, have a small issue but it's annoying to me. I always use the "Details" view when using Windows Explorer or My Computer. With XP I could see the little lines which represented the different columns at the top and still with Vista although in a slightly different way. With Win 7 I can't get them to show at all so that any time I want to size the column I have to watch the cursor to see when it changes to a + so that I can size the columns. How can I make the lines show up? I know that wasn't a very good explanation, see example below with red circles around the lines on XP pic:

Hello!

I'd prefer to have details for all folders.
It looks like I found a solution for the annoying auto changing of folder types:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;This registry script has been made by Vishal Gupta - AskVG.com

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]
"FolderType"="NotSpecified"

But I also want the view to stay details even if I change it in explorer's view menu to look at something. In this case currently the setting is immediately saved somewhere and next time I get that view. I want it to show details the next time I visit it...

(I have also disabled thumbs.db and desktop.ini via registry settings.)

Hello Avada,

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view of "Details" with a "General Items" template. The folder view will be applied to all folders and remembered. If you make any changes to the folder view of a folder afterwards, then that change will still be remembered for that folder.

Hello to ALL,

Windows Explorer in details view does not display the columns headers bar (name, type, date, size etc...) - it was there since the installation in DEC'09 but today when i opened the WE it wasn't there. The folders and files are still showed in columns, from view/choose details... menu i can select/clear which columns to appear but the columns names are not displayed.

Has anyone encountered such a behavior? Any idea how to restore the columns headers bar to be displayed?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks / Nicky

Answer:Explorer - NO column headers bar in details view

Hello Nicky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The column headers would only be displayed in the Details folder arrangement view. Since you do, then you might see if resetting all folder views to default may restore them afterwards. If it does not help, then you might see if a repair install can without losing anything.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello, I apologize if this issue has been addressed already, but I can't seem to find a thread with a solution to my problem. Whenever I set my view to "Details," my windows explorer would always set itself to other views such as Tiles, or other times, it would usually get rid of the other columns, and only the "Name" column appears while all the other columns disappear. If I add all the columns that I had originally back to its state, it would then go to other settings of view (usually Tiles) or just go back to having no other columns except "Name." These are just some examples of the issue that I have. Even if I went to Folder Options, and clicked on "Apply to Folders" or "Reset Folders," the problem still persists. Some folder's sub-folders even get affected for some reason. I have even scanned my computer for any malware, viruses, worms etc. I have Windows Vista, and I use AVG 9.0 and Ad-Aware for protection. They detect the computer is clean, and I always scan my computer on a regular basis. Thus far, I can't get the views to be fixed and not have it change to other views and settings. Is there any solution to this? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I have searched the web. Maybe it can't be done.

I'm on XP Pro SP2.
I use "Details" view as my default in Windows Explorer, and would love to have that be the default view for all my File Open and File Save dialogs, but they always default to "List" view < grrrrrrr >.

Some MS apps can be forced to keep Details view *for that session only* by setting to Details and holding down the CTRL key while processing the first file, but after re-opening the app, I'm back to List view.

Whoever at Microsoft made the executive decision to make List the default needs to have itching powder sprinkled in his shorts.

I'm hoping that with all the combined knowledge on this forum, someone has a solution.

Thanks -

Good afternoon everyone, Here is the problem. I am trying to get a standard view for the files under 'My Music' and all subfolders. Does not seem to work. Let us take an example: In the My Music\classical\ subfolder all the subfolders below that are artists names and the files may consist of mp3, mp4, m4a, flv, swf, some txt, occasional mpeg. It seems that if the folder contains all mp3 files then I can select 'name', 'size' & 'length' and in folder options I select view>apply to all folders then it will display correctly. But not if there are mp4, m4a, and flv mixed or some other combination. Then (whoever is in charge of my computer) adds all the additional columns and I wind up clicking away to remove the offending details only to have to do it again and again. Is there a way to do it 'my way'? Thanks for viewing!

In details view, when right clicking the header to add columns, is there a way to add Frame Width and Frame Height to that popup menu?

Better yet would be making it automatically add those columns for folders with videos files, with Frame Width to the left of Frame Height? Applying settings to all folders only works for folders that already exist. New folders still default to the default settings.

To add those columns one has to right click the header, click More, scrolllllll way down, check the two boxes, click OK then drag Width to the left of Height.

The view on CDs and my phone do not get set to detailed view, and do not show the modified date when is set it that way. Worse, the thing does not "stick" on my HTC One X+ phone, reverting to that view every time I change folders by clicking on the triangles to go back or open a new folder. I have to set a new view every time.

The "apply to folders" option is dimmed. when I go to tools->folder options->view.
Worse, I have set all five types the way I want them and it works for the hard drives, but these defaults are ignored for CDs or DVDs I burn or for connecting my phone to the computer. Even more annoying, the stupid "group by" gets turned on for CDs and DVDs.

How do I set the final "hidden" default? I want it so that "group by" never gets turned on unless I tell it to, although completely disabling that annoying feature would be acceptable. Anybody can share how to increase the size of icons in the details view of folders? there are a couple of howto around but they don't work, any new solution you know?

Answer:Increase Icons Size in Folder Details View

You can change the icon size to pretty much any size you like using CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe

It's an AutoHotKey script compiled as an executable and you can download it here:

How to assign browser-like zooming hotkeys for resizing icons on the Desktop and in the Explorer window in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 | Winaero

In addition to the video shown in the above link here's another video (below) showing the script in action on my machine.

Folder is set to "General Items" and "Details View"

Icon size is remembered on a per folder basis (Folder Template Discovery is off). Not sure what happens if you've got Folder Template Discovery switched on.

Note: CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe will run until you kill the process via task manager or other method.

Answer:Tell folder to remember view type ie details or thumb

Hello Lee,

By default, the folder views of a folder opened from a specific location should show the same way they were when the folder window was last closed from that location.

If a folder can be open from more than one location, then each location will have a separate folder view remembered for it. For example, C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures vs Start Menu -> Pictures vs Start Menu -> Personal folder -> Pictures.

Is there a setting in XP home and pro where you can set the number of pixels in the name from 180, which appears to be standard, to about 300 -----and have it reset all the files in folders set to open in "details" ---but do it all at once (registry or somewhere else), so I won't have to change this setting for each folder set to open the files with "details". Files and folders are mixing together but only on one drive or possibly in one folder. This drive in all places except two has a folder containing only folders or a folder containing only files. The exceptions are a folder called PVRRECORD and the root of the drive, which contains:

autorun
Recycled
System Volume Information
autorun.inf
NET.JPG
PVRRECORD
recorded.txtClick to expand...

Then I move into PVRRECORD and things start messing up. Clicking on Name to arrange by name gives me mixed files and folders, usually (but not always?) with files of matching name to a folder coming after the folder. A file that you would expect to be mixed in amongst the folders may be at the end of the folders like a well-behaved file should be. Later it will end up mixed in with the folders like all the other files.

I found that clicking on alternate headings can cause the files and folders to separate and then clicking on Name again will give me the correct sorting order. However, I have to try Size, then Type, then Date Modified. Sometimes I only need to click on one other heading or maybe two but equally often I have to run through the whole lot before things go back to normal. Things don't necessarily arrange in a logical order, as you go through this process, until the last sort.

List view, is in my opinion, totally worthless once you have more than a handful of files in a folder... Thus...I'm wondering, is there some Registry hack, or other means that would allow me to do this?

Thanks for any pointers!

When you open up a folder full of images and select Details view, Windows 7 displays a lot of information down at the bottom of the list about the image. All well and good, except that the ones that are shown by default are aimed mostly at photographers, and show things like camera model or lens setting. I want have a big folder full of, say, car images, and I'd like the bottom to display things like Year make and model, all of which you can select for display in the columns above. But there seems to be no way to do this. Ideas?

Answer:Edit displayed EXIF data in details view

Go into the details box, and right-click on what you want to change, comments, add a tag, add a name, Author, etc etc. You can add or edit anything you like in the edit boxes that pop up.

I set my explorer window so details and went into option so it can be the default, but when I browse a ftp folder, it still has the "tiles" by default.

Can't I set details also for ftp folders ?

Answer:Windows explorer can't remember the details view on ftp folders

Are the ftp Folders on your computer or on a Server? I've found that the Folders on my Domain aren't affected/retained by the Folder Options, View settings on the computers I use to log in and transfer files.

I'm using WIndows XP, I have my music files folders set to "details" view. Recently the ID3 information has not shown up. I can view it through winamp file info or through my tag editor. However file properties does not give any info either. All other information in detail view is available, date modified, type, size etc.
If I do a system restore it all appears again. Then after a few days or weeks it goes. It doesn't seem to bear any relation to installing new apps.
This is a very useful feature for me and I want to fix the problem. I've searched for information but found nothing. It's also difficult to search as the words are none specific.
Any help direct or indirect would be appreciated.
Thanks
Peacht

Strange new behavior.
Win 8.1
When I choose a folder and opt for view/large or medium icons, I initially get the chosen option, but after I close the folder and open it again after a few minutes, it opens back to the original details setting---quite annoying. This happens particularly after rebooting.

Any ideas?

I have Googled unsuccessfully.

I'm on XP Pro SP2.
I use "Details" view as my default in Windows Explorer, and want that to be the default view for all my application File Open and File Save dialogs, but they always default to "List" view .

Some Microsoft apps can be forced to keep Details view *for that session only* by setting to Details and holding down the CTRL key while processing the first file, but after re-opening the app, I'm back to List view.

Whoever at Microsoft decided to make List the default needs to have itching powder sprinkled in his shorts.

I'm hoping someone has a solution.

Thanks -
gG

Answer:Solved: Need a way to set Details as default view in Open/Save dialogs

Open/Save Dialog Box

This is a bug in XP and Microsoft Is Aware Of This - The Common Dialog Box Does Not Retain The Settings.

I really like the details view. The File Explorer Details view works great on all folders. However when ever I search (which windows search sucks and is another story) it always REVERTS back to the CONTENT view, even though I set it to show DETAILS. I could not find a way for it to have the DETAILS view persist when I do search. I am posting a video that illustrates the issue
http://recordit.co/4PvjRiXYSv

In one folder for some reason it did stick to Details view , but not sure how.
I thought I can run the search and click on Folder options and Apply to all folders, but that is greyed out when in search.

it is just a nuisance

Thanks

Answer:Windows 10 Aniv (or older) Search Details view setting not persistent

Hi, if I search a folder in file explorer, and set the display to, say, medium icons, and close explorer, and then repeat that with a different folder, but set the search results to, say, Details, then if I go back to the first folder and do a search, the display is medium icons. The same with the other folder.

I.e. the format of the search results is remembered for a particular folder.

What I think you are asking for is all search results to be presented in a particular view, the same for all folders. Is that correct?

When I use the details view, the vertical spacing between rows is so big it makes it hard to scan down long lists. It's most notable when chaning from list view to details view, also the folder pane on the left doesn't have this odd spacing. I know MS has embraced liberal use of white space, but this spacing is uncommon and very hard to use for long lists. Is there any way to change this back to normal?

Answer:Windows Explorer - Details View - Vertical Spacing Readability Issues

Desktop - Right click - Personalize - Window Color - Advanced Appearance Settings - and change all fonts to Tahoma 8, and you will get windows xp font, and little less spacing

If you use the details view in Windows Explorer, you'll note that save for the name field, all other fields are grayed out, likely due to Microsoft finding them "irrelevant" for most users. This is infuriating, as these are things which I refer to regularly, and I find it asinine that I'm expected to squint difficultly at gray text on a white background just to determine specific characteristics of a file. If anyone out there has any idea of a workaround, be it a third party application to hack around with the OS, or a registry value, or a setting which hitherto has escaped my notice, which would rid me of this annoyance, I offer my preemptive thanks and appreciation. Please, let me know if you have any ideas!

Thank you, again.

Answer:Details view in Explorer utilizes faint font color for most fields.
