Preferred Solution: Weekend Open Forum: AMD or Nvidia?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Weekend Open Forum: What CPU powers your computer?

Got an i5-2500k in my gaming computer, and a C2Q Q8200 in my home server. Because of the small enclosures they are in I have not overclocked them, with the watercooled 2500k being in a Prodigy case stuffed to the gills, and the Q8200 is in a 2U rack case.

Not sure about the server, but I know with Star Citizen in the distant horizon, I'm very compelled to upgrade around the end of the year. This is driven less by my CPU and more by my graphics card (watercooled GTX 570) and memory, which I only have 8GB.

edit: oh yeah, and my XPS 12 has an i5-4210.

We got the Antivirus Live Saturday (not quite sure where/how - teen using the computer and clicking randomly = not good!).

How I fixed it: Opened IE, went into Tools, Internet Options, Connection, LAN settings, and unchecked the proxy server box.

AVG seemed to be affected, and obviously it didn't pick up the problem so after I was able to get back on the net I downloaded Spyware Doctor and did a full system scan. It found a ton of infections, removed them all and we thought we were good to go. Then last night I wasn't getting the error any more, but when I opened IE it started giving me the fake error message that there was an infection and directing me to the Antivirus Live page again. Argh!!

So I did a system restore to a few days prior to when I got the virus. Okay, all good. Except NOW the Spyware Doctor I downloaded isn't on my computer, and AVG won't work. I click it to open it and nothing happens. It didn't open in the system tray. I tried to uninstall it and I get the following: Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"

I tried to download Spyware Doctor and Avast and AVG uninstaller, etc. and nothing will download. Well, it appears to download but it won't run. I click "download" and it appears to be downloading but then when I click "run" nothing happens. ... Read more

Hello everyone.

I'd like to see if anyone can help me with this. I have tried many things but nothing works.

The problem started a few months ago. I have the Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128 card. All of a sudden the screen started flickering. Monitor goes on and off after a few flickering.

So I went into safe mode and had to disable the card. If I enable the card I can't even get past the windows loading screen and it goes into the so called Blue screen of death saying there is a problem with Nv4_disp.dll.

(No flickering during the Dell screen).

Plus. If I try to play a game it says there is a problem with DirectX. I have DirectX 9.0c., Windows XP SP2, Dell Dimension 8300 series computer.

To solve I tried reinstalling DirectX. Nothing happened. Tried with new drivers for the card, nothing either. Check the Registry for errors with a program called RegVac, which did found some errors but nothing with the card.

Can anyone give me a hint on what happened and how I can solve this?

I need to get into this forum so that I can moderate it but IE keeps dropping the ball. I can get it to go to open the main forum page ( ) but if I click a post to read it just says "Applet mflip started" in the status bar and goes to "Page Can Not Be Found". Here is an example post for you guys ( ). On the rare occasions that I can get the page open to read the post it is still only half loaded because the text boxes do not load to let me reply if I needed to. I have my security level on medium which seems to be as low as IE will let me set it, third party and session cookies are accepted plus I am using Sun Java.

Ok, I'm sure when you guys saw that old standard of a thread topic you guys's first thought was "oh boy, here we go again." But I dunno, I feel like a got a particularly perplexing problem. I'll give the basic story and fill you in on the grittier details if necessary.

I'm running XP Home Edition, it pretty much looks like Windows 2000. The Internet Explorer I have is version 6. So a few days ago I get this virus. I run my Anti-Virus and it quarantines some stuff it classifies as Adware. Whenever I try to delete said nasties it says I can't for various reasons.

I try to bring up Mozilla. Nothing happens. I try to bring up IE and it opens for a split second and closes again, I'm sure you guys have heard of this before. So I figure I'd run a few more virus-getters for a second opinion. From another computer I network over a few installs, and they also, for the most part, refuse to open (I did the same thing with re-installing Mozilla, it would install, but it still wouldn't open.)

I've been plundering various forums and trying various fixes to no avail. The longer I'm at this the more infuriating it gets. So I'd figure I'd drop my own message here to see if you guys can suggest me any fixes I haven't already tried.

I'd greatly appreciate your time and my head would greatly appreciate some time without it being scratched,

Hi all, I have a Gateway cx200x Tablet pc. It all started when my stylus quit working.MS support told me that all I have to do is download sp2 and reinstall it. I did just that. Now I have this NTLDR is compressed. I have read every thing I could to find out to fix this but to no avail. I do not have a full copy of XP. Just the recovery cds. I do however have a older copy of xp from a computer I bought 4 years ago. I do not have a floppy drive. I do have a usb flash drive. I tried using the tablet pc recovery cds and trying reinstall with backup. Still compressed. I tried using the older xp cd recovery and it says setup cannot detect any hard drives installed. I can however use the flash drive in combination with the older xp cd and I can get to the c prompt. I have done fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk. still compressed.I cannot get into safemode. Question: Not my weekend....

Sigh, here I am again. With another problem. This time, my moniter wont turn on at all. Usually, the power light is green when its working fine, orange when its off. This time however, its always orange, with no picture whatsoever on the screen. The pc though, works fine with one of the spare moniters that I have.

I have tried a spare wire, nothing. Tried to hook it up to another computer, same problem.

I hope I dont have to buy another one since I love this one.

P.S. The make is "Mag Innovision"

Model numbers are something along the lines of : LT765 OR 780. Flat screen.

Thanks again.

Answer:Not my weekend....

If it is doing the same thing on two totally different systems, then it is probably time to break out the recording of "taps". Mag Innovision Monitors are not high end monitors. Surprizingly a monitor that I have onlyseen for sale at Walmart the KDS brand has always lasted me and given me a good quality picture. And a 17" flat screen will only cost about $100.

I have been having some problems with me system, so I gop in the system information area and I see my p2.4 is not regestering correctly.... So here is what I tried so far.

I put in a new HD and tried to load a new OS, it will not go. If I use my existing HD + OS, it works fins as long ast the mhz is turned down to 100 mhz as opposed to 133 this makes the processor run at 1.7 not 2.4 which it should. I am hoping it has something to do with the video card. Since I should have my new one in a couple days. (ordered it on Thursday)

Any clue? Suggestions? Is there a way to find out who the manufactuerer of the MB is? There are no markings on it! I can tell you that the bios is American Megatrends. Help me pleeze!

Down load pc wizard from the above link and find out what mobo you have and see if you can find a manual.

I don't know why your cpu won't run at its rated speed but I would start troubleshooting by testing the ram with memtest86.

The video card is not the problem. What kind of system is it, try and list your specs like mine.

I really would like info on what psu is in it and what watt

I'm having a fairly long time problem of not being able to access the nVidia Control Panel for my GeForce 6800. The last version that I believe I had the control panel working was 162.18, and I think it stopped working when I tried to update from that to 163.75, but I can't be sure of it. I have 169.21 right now.

Answer:Can't Open nVidia Control Panel

hello ,

what you may have done is down loaded the wrong drivers for your card ??

i have done this befor !!

so go back to the home site for your card & compare the versions

also you may need a patch for the upgrade from the home site for the card ??

now when installing the new drivers & software for the card did you uninstall the older version then reboot & install the newer version then reboot

just need to ask

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

then get back to us

Answer:Hit by several viruses this weekend.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? First Steps

link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined below. Use a USB flash drive to download and transfer the tools to the affected machine, if necessary. You might like to run the Flash_Disinfector.exe on the clean machine and the flash drive first to protect against any possible transfer of infection via USB.

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Hi everyone.

I need your advice...

This weekend, my Compaq M700 laptop froze. When I rebooted, I got several nasty messages saying something like immanent failure and then it proceeded to force a chkdsk on me (as it did not let me skip this scan). This took forever, as it found lost clusters and it moved here and there and it also removed some unrecoverable directories. Not good.

Anyways, after a good 4 to 5 hour later, it prompted me to log into Windows 2000.

From what I can see, it looks like it has disabled my Norton protection as I think it wiped out all of my virus protection updates. Everthing else seems OK.

I've ran the Norton Windows repair function and it found and repaired 60 problems.

I also ran Compaq's notebook diagnostic and it found a whole bunch of error codes. It also spat out the following:

- track 7045 head 23 - error code 01702001
- bios return code 0x0011
- sequential verify/seek/read & random tests failed

I'm currently running Norton speed disk to see if this will do anything.

...So here are my questions...

1) Is there anything else I should do?
2) Is there any software that I can get that will repair my hard drive?
3) Am I just wasting my time with this?...Is my hard drive completely toast?
4) Should I just invest in a new hard drive?

Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Question: Virus weekend

It's beginning to look as though we may be about to experience a bad weekend as far as virus infections are concerned, and although I very much hope that the alarms are false I thought it might be helpful to post details of those places (apart from here) where you can get help and/or advice about the current crop of nasties.By far the biggest current threat is our friend I-Worm/Sobig.F which is classed as category 4 (high) risk. There are other viruses active too, and for more information, or to download fixes you should click hereORclick hereORclick hereAs always, if you have any doubts, or if you think you have an infection but aren't sure what to do next, come to the Helproom. Take a look to see if there are any running threads about your problem before you post one of your own.Have a good weekend, and as a famous precinct officer in a famous TV show used to say "Be safe out there".

Well, I had my worst nightmare come true regarding a PC..Got slammed with a virus/malware and could not get rid of it and had to format my harddrive....Well after spending hours getting everything just right and I thought I was done, had all my notes saved on my IAD, passwords etc...I must have sync the ipad incorrectly with my pc and all my notes were deleted.Does anyone know if it is possible to restore these "notes" in Office 2007??Thanks

Answer:Disasterous Weekend

your best shot would be using some basic file recovery software like recuva. It does have its limitations but thats the best without having to pay for the recovery or having to learn a bunch of command line parameters.

Question: BSOD every weekend

Apparently my computer doesn't like to work weekends, but I need to keep it running because of scheduled work-related downloads. Oddly, the problem only happens when my computer is inactive for more than one day; no problems at all during the week when it gets daily use.

Zip file with info attached.

Win7 Professional 64-bit
Original installed OS
OEM version
Computer is about 2 months old
OS install should be the same, I'd hope.

Help would be appreciated!

Hey guys, i used your forum this weekend to do a little project that i just failed completely at. Im a OTR truck driver and when i have some spare time i have my laptop to keep me company. its a compaq armada m700, 700mhz, 12G HDD and maxxed out in memory running XP, not a game'r but more of a surf'er. I decided to do the solid state hard drive upgrade thats all the rage now since this thing gets tossed all around the truck, well, not exactly. my SSHDD consisted of a compact flash card with the smaller IDE connector that connects were the spinner goes. I wasted a whole weekend doing this to get some horrible results. heres how the battle went:

could not ghost the spinner onto the card because there were some system restore files that were fragmented, even tried to fragment just those files with no luck. everytime they were "accessed" the spinner went into this like self test mode thingy were it stopped TX/RX-ing and it would make 4 clicks and time out.. unno.. dont ask. so that killed that idea.

the copy of XP i have is a upgrade, not fresh install. so i inserted the card into lappy and began to load 98 onto it. 98 ran perfectly fine. awsome, so i thought. started the xp install. got all to way to the first start up and when it got to the splash screen, BSOD!!!! UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. ok, fix that with fixboot, next start up: NTLDR is missing, damit. copy blah blah blah ntldr to... from... ok. startup: nothing.

being one pissed of white guy i go... Read more

Question: Weekend project

Ok, I'm going to start this in earnest this weekend, but I'm gonna put out a feeler early, this is purely going to be a home project for giggles

I got a Netgear Wireless Router (I'll get the model number when I get home, its the 108Mb model and has some groovey features)

Mac OSX server will be integrated to Win2k3 server via Active Directory. DNS will be served from the Netgear built in client from (I hope). My hopes are for FTP and Webserver from OSX, with Home directories and maybe some other stuff from the Win2K3 server.

I guess I need to know if anyone has had any experience with dyndns in a multiple server environment. The router also features DMZ config, which I am not overly familiar with. Since I will need to access the active directory I would assume there would be a need to do something along the DNS line with that as well.

My main goal is to get the win2k3 server involved so I can play with it, and maybe go for my MCSE at some point. Also, directory integrations are being demanded more and more in projects at my job so it will be good practice for me on a Maintenance/Setup purposes.

This is a rather drastic probably overblown project for a home setup, but I thought it might be fun to try and share the experience with fellow [H]'ers. A lot more people are dipping their toes in the waters of Mac-dom, and I am kind of the reverse.

I guess my main problems are going to be DNS since I can't seem to get my head out of my ars... Read more

Have you tried re-installing the drivers? In the setup there is an option to make a "clean install" removing all installed settings and profiles. Try it.

Hi, all!

I hope this is the right section to be posting this in.

I've been having a lot of issues with my computer, a refurbished/modified Sony Vaio.
I just got it back from a computer repair store where they were replacing the fan, as my old fan had up and died. The computer had been slow before then, but after getting it back from him, I've found its performance has taken an absolute nosedive.
While trying to disk defragment, AVG came up with multiple security warnings. I allowed it to exterminate the threats without much thought. Afterwards, I had realized that I believe it messed with my NVIDIA software. Ever since the AVG debacle, the NVIDIA Control Panel refuses to open. I have tried to install the drivers for my graphics card, but in going through the setup, it gives me an error saying it could not find compatible graphics hardware.

Any help with getting my NVIDIA back would be greatly appreciated!

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

Let me know if you need any other information!

Answer:Solved: NVIDIA Control Panel won't open

Fixed it! After searching about AVG, I was able to restore the NVIDIA components that it had disabled. Sorry for the trouble!

At work I've been running Vista 64 for awhile and I had my birthday this week, so I talked the wife into letting me upgrade my computer. So I got a new motherboard, CPU, RAM and video card (went over budget and bought a new HD too, but SSHH, don't say anything).

Since I'm reusing my case and I wanted to minimize downtime from re-installing everything all over again on the new system and I couldn't run both at the same time, I first upgraded the video card in the old system and made sure everything worked fine. (BTW, I have a 1TB external USB drive for backup, so I did a FULL backup before I got started.) Then, I swapped in the new motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Normally, I would not recommend trying this because getting XP up and running after a swap to a different motherboard doesn't always work and requires a lot of patience and know-how if you run into driver issues and such. In my case, I bought my new MB from the same MFG as the old one and knew that most of the MB drivers were at least compatible with the new board, if out of date.

Once I got all the new hardware working with XP, I did a new backup and tested all of my required applications. I then used VMWare to create a virtual machine from the XP partition on my hard drive by restoring my working backup to a new Virtual Machine, then fixing the driver issues so that everything ran perfectly inside of VMWare. I copied the VM to my USB drive and tested it with the VMWare Player on the wife's computer and everythi... Read more

So this weekend I hope to start the process of running network cable through out my home. I planned to have all the cables run into my garage, and put my networking equipment in there.

I was wondering if you guys had a better suggestion for this? To me the garage seems like a logical place, but at the same time a bad idea. I have two other potential locations; the closet of my 'office', or the walk-in closet in the master bedroom.

The closet in my office is probably a bad idea, because when my fiancee and I have children, that room would most definitely become our childs' bedroom. Or my fiance's office (the other bedroom) would get moved to my office.

The walk-in closet seems logical on a security front, especially later when I might want to ground my child and remove internet / telephone access. But I think my fiancee might not appreciate the extra equipment taking up our pretty cramped walk-in closet.

What is your guys take on this? Any other places you'd suggest? I thought of the laundry closet as well, but until we get a washer and dryer, I'm not sure how much extra space I'd have for that.

I've also thought of redistributing the coax inputs and phone lines to my new wiring center as well. Any thoughts on that?

Answer:Networking my house this weekend...

What about a basement or attic do you have any room there to have a wire closet.

Me and Oakfan did "Phase I" of a side project this last weekend. Phase I took place at a dentist office, and it's scope was to replace cabling as necessary as well as to add runs to a few existing rooms. Basically, the building had a t-bar drop cieling with acoustic tiles, and a ton of R-19 (i think) pink insulation.

There were several ethernet drops that were using this strange cable I'd never seen before. Basically it was a gray cable with 8 wires inside, none of them twisted, and no markings on the outside. There were the standard phone colors (red, gree, yellow, and black) as well as orange, green, green, blue, and brown. I took a close up of it, but it was EXTREMELY blurry. Also. the asshat that put this stuff in decided that wall plates are over-rated and ran the runs directly to the back of the computer.

We're also still waiting on a patch panel to clean the mess up even better on the server side. That same asshat is the one that mounted that Netgear router and the switch to the wall, crooked no less.

Pic of all the ass-cabling we removed:

Pic of the "server":
Miscellaneous hallway shot:
There was also some weird cabling that had what looked like to be a parallel port on the end. You can kinda see them in the first pic. Anyone know what the hell they are? These had been abandoned and were just sitting behind the computers and desks. There was one wall plate still up though:

Anyone know what these are for??

It's been awhile since I've used an Apple, I own numerous PCs. Anyways, I'm headed to a computer auction at Abilene Christian University this weekend. I'm particulary interested in this;

"Powerful G5 Powermacs with Dual 2.0GHz Processors, 1.5 GB, 150GB HD, DVD burners, and Apple Studio LCD Display!"

I haven't seen a decent price for this online. Any estimate what I should pay (limit) at an auction for it?

Answer:Mac Question, going to an auction this weekend

Basically look up the price of the LCD display by itself, those things are insane.

I don't really know what you should set as your limit. The tower and components themselves (minus the monitor) appear to fetch you well over $500 on ebay. Closer to 700+ it seems.

Might want to look at this auction|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
it is probably about what you are looking at. $560 with 8.25 hours left, with a buy it now of $900.

Those are pretty sweet machines and will handle a lot of work, probably not so good for gaming though. I've heard they are pretty loud, and another concern is they will not be able to run Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) when it comes out, so you are going to be limited in a couple years on what new software you can run on it.

Not trying to discourage you, just providing some information you may not be aware of. I'm a pretty happy Mac user, I've got 3 Macs and 3 PCs at home.

OK, I'd consider myself an advanced user but I always learn a lot from trying to fix my own computer problems. This weekend has been another one of those times.

So, I'll give you the long story. Friday night my computer was running fine. I was trying to help a friend fix her computer over IM, and she was asking about some editing of the Registry to fix it. Basically, I accidently restored a registry backup from a long time ago onto my computer and had no very good way to get the old one back. When I restarted my computer, it went into that XP black-screen to boot loop. It wouldn't go into Safe Mode either, so I pulled out the Recovery Console on CD.

So, I remember using a nice Microsoft article to fix the registry from a backup or somehting they automagically make or something, so I was going to look for that. On the way, I was like, "Hmmm.... FixMBR.... that has to do with booting, maybe that would fix it." As you can guess, I was making too many rash decisions. So I ran FixMBR or something and it screwed up the boot area good and well. It would just post a message like "Invalid boot information" or something.

The hardware's all good and fine, I'm pretty darn sure of that. But any ideas of ways to restore the data? I mean, just by doing that the data can't be completely wiped from the drive, right? I think I could do without all the data that was on the drive, but it would be nice to recover some of it.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Well, if you have a laptop and a wireless card, you can join dozens of other technophiles with time on their hands in searching out insecure WLANs.
A group of security professionals and enthusiasts later this week will kick off the second WorldWide WarDrive, a week-long coordinated effort to identify wireless LANs and assess their security levels. The first event, held in late Aug. through early Sept., drew participants from 10 states and six countries.

The second wardrive starts Oct. 26 and runs through Nov. 2.

War driving is the practice of canvassing a given neighborhood or city in search of WLANs. Practitioners typically cruise an area, armed with a notebook PC or handheld with a WLAN card and a software program, such as NetStumbler or Kismet, that listens for signals sent out by WLAN access points.

From the information broadcast by the AP, war drivers can tell if the device has WEP (wired equivalent privacy) encryption enabled and other vital information, such as the network's SSID (service set identifier).

There is nothing illegal about simply identifying such networks but connecting to them and using bandwidth and network resources for free is a crime. Which is why the organizers of the WWWD are careful to point out that they do not connect to any of the networks they find. In fact, the group's Web page lists instructions on how to avoid connecting to a network inadvertently.

Those behind the event say the... Read more

So it's saturday afternoon and I decide to get off my butt and try the new thermal paste on my processor/heatsink. Everything goes fine, at least I think so....

So now it is sat evening, and I was doing some cleanup on my machine. I discovered a nasty little group of 5 DSO exploits that would show back up after boot up. They all ended with "1004!=W=3" minus the quotes. After the second removal of them, I went to restart. Restart took foooooorever :amazed: , but finally went. Next thing ya know, the bios keeps rebooting over and over so I turned the computer off. Now the bios won't even boot.

So things are ugly now. My mobo(msi k8n) has a group of 4 lights on this little usb connector plate that are for diagnosing problems. It hangs/gets stuck on "Testing base and extended memory".

I've cleared the CMOS, nothing changes. It only beeps once when I try to boot, which MSI says is a DRAM error. I have no clue what a DRAM error is.... Maybe my RAM smoked? I have dual 512 corsair 3200 XMS low latency.

Does anyone have a clue what is occuring? The only reason I think it could be a processor failure is because I messed with the processor earlier that day, but my temps were mid 30's??? I thought maybe I put on too much thermal paste or something, I don't know. Help!!!!

Answer:A very bad weekend... processor smoked?

take everything off the mb and wait like 5 min... cards, ram, ide's, even the cmos battery.... there might even be a jumper to clear the cmos... probably have to short that jumper press the start button and then turn it off and un-short it... do that a couple of times and see if it works... if not tell me what happens

This weekend LANmaniac is holding another event in the LA/OC area. We are located just mile north of the (91) free way, in-between the (605) and (710). So we are pretty much so smack dab on the border line of Los Angeles/ Orange County.
At our events COD:UO is picking up a lot of popularity. Other big games at the LAN are UT2K4 and Battlefield 9142. Other then that we will play some Raven Shield, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, UT, Quake 3 and pretty much so any other FPS that kicks ass.

Our LAN starts at around noon Saturday afternoon and goes until about 6am or so the next day.

We have a dedicated file server for all of the patches and what not as well as a dedicated game server. All of this is on our (10/100/1000) Gigabit network to provide a lag free environment.

For dinner it?s always a toss up. We may fire up the BBQ and spend some time around it shooting the shit, or we may choose the lazy route and order up a shit load of pizza.

If such an event interests you are you are a geek looking to have a good time with other fellow geeks, this is the place!

See you there!

Answer:Bad Vista Update This Weekend

Did you try removing the update? Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates

This is the first time this has happened and I just want to check on what might be going wrong. I had a similar problem that reoccurred with an older hard drive in this computer and I had to wipe the hard drive and return it, so I want to tackle this right away. Thanks for any insight!

I accidently downloaded the damned Active X link or something and it installed a couple things on my computer. At first I was getting constant pop ups telling me I was potentially infected. Every time I started IE it would automatically send me to a supposed antivirus program site. I managed to get Registry mechanic and spybot installed and run. Thats problem is fixed or seems to be, but now I see a blue flashing question mark that turns into a red shield with a white X in it. This sends me to another website. I also keep getting a system alert from it.

I'm going to include the hijack report. with follow up post.

My Last post on the Security/Am I Infected Forum:
I just finished the SFC Scan. The message report stated:
Windows resource protection found corrupt files, but was unable to fix some of them... windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.Log
I attempted to view the CBS.log text file in the Windows8 directory in notepad and wordpad, but I received an access denied window. So, I don't know how to copy and paste the information here. And, it will not let me copy the whole file so that i can attach it here on this thread."

"OK, sorry for the delay. I am also still to new to Win 8 system files...

Answer:Reposting on this Forum per Security Forum Moderator's Instructions

You need to Copy the log file to your desktop before trying to access/read or make changes to the Log file. The CBS.LOG file is in use by the system and Locked so you can not make any changes to the file.
In an Elevated Command prompt Past this command

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will make a copy of the CBS.LOG file  on your desktop called SFCDETAILS.txt with only the SFC /scannow details. The CBS.LOG file can be VERY long.

Vista Ultimate 64bit Hp Pavillion 9000v 2g ram **
I am sick of this and am seriously considering selling my new $2k HP 9000v + $700 software. I had to reformat 3X since April. Current problems: I have IE7 and Firefox and neither will open. I don't know why IE opened this time-it was the 2nd attempt. No error messages. I HATE this computer now. I can't trust it with any important info, and now can't even browse. I am also getting layered service provider errors but can't find info on it either in help or online.
I also want to download google earth and need to (according to G-earth forum) update Nvidia driver. I had serious probs w/last download attempt & ended up reformatting. Auto update says I dont need it, and if I try to install manually I get the following error: [setup detected that OS is not vista 32bit, this setup program & assoc drivers designed to run on windows vista 32bit, install w/b terminated] Of course the neat thing is I tried both drivers, 32 and 64 bit, and get the same respective error. I also get auto updates which include the Nvidia GeForce series driver, HP Recovery Manager and something else, all of which fail every time even if I try it one at a time.

I don't care if this is fixed or sold. I'm disabled, it will take years for me to finish paying this and it is useless & microsoft charges if I want their help. Someone please help me. I don't know what to do anymore. I am scared that I wasted all that mon... Read more

I used to work on Windows 7, I use to open my email and just make a click on the attached file (PDF for example) then just a simple click on Quick Print icon and that's it, the PDF file goes directly to the printer -no need to open the file-, so NOW on Windows 8 when I make a click on the attachment and, at the time to send to the printer, the file is opened and then I need to print it from there. The thing is that I need to print several files from several email daily. What I used to take me a few minutes to do it now I take a lot of time to do finish it.

Hi all,

I built a new computer a couple of months back and it worked without issues. I have the latest Windows 7 updates installed. I also updated my graphics card drivers (ATI 4670) with the latest release from the manufacturer website.

Anyways, this weekend I have had about 7-8 BSOD's with a variety of error codes, ranging from IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL to SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION to PFN_LIST_ERROR. I ran memtest86+ 1.70 (couldn't get 4.00 to boot for some reason) for about 3 hours and there were no errors reported. I believe the issue happens when I am attempting to view streaming video on the internet, since the computer does not have any issues while idling.

I thought the problem may be a side effect of KB976098 which was the most recent update installed before the computer began BSOD-ing, but even uninstalling that hasn't rectified the problems. I have attached my crash dumps. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Frequent BSODs started this weekend

Install the latest driver for your video card from ATI's site.

Flash only works in x86 browsers so make sure you're using the x86 version of I.E. with the latest flash install from Adobe's website.

Or use any x86 browser and install latest flash for that.

Update these drivers or alternatively, uninstall from the system if not important to the system:

LMIRfsDriver LMIRfsDriver.sys Mon Jul 14 12:26:56 2008
RaInfo RaInfo.sys Fri Jan 04 13:57:14 2008
Update your Truecrypt to latest version.

Also, if you have AVG I can not stress the importance enough to completely uninstall that. It is absolutely the most horrific piece of junk ever. I must have fixed 20 or 30 machines with it by having users uninstall, all within the last week or so.

Follow my lead here with my recommendations and your pc will be good as new.

I'm in a time crunch as my father needs a new Desktop and I am only home for a few days around Thanksgiving to set it up. I need the bare minimum: He only uses it for email, music and light web-surfing. He doesn't game or watch movies. He's a grandpa - you get it.

He lives in the 18020 zipcode and I was going to build him a DELL, but it would never get to him in time. Here are the stats and I'm hoping someone will refresh my mind about a great store to go to (Best Buy is the only thing coming to my mind for some reason) or an online dependable store that can ship that fast.

Specs needed:
Windows XP or Windows 7 (he's used to XP and I don't want to blow his mind with something too different)
Word/Excel (is Open Office a good idea?)
Outlook Express (this is what he's used to)
100 GB is plenty of space for him (though I think most start at 250)
He uses RCN cable (no wifi needed)
He has a monitor - so a tower alone is fine
No virus protection as I'll upload him the free ones from here
$400 tops
I'd love any and all advice. I just am not savvy on where to buy one since I am a Mac user. Costco?

I will also need to transfer his stuff from the old one to the new one. Is it called a "crossover cable?" Is that what I should get and how much should it run me? Do I need a software as well?

He's going to need his emails from the old computer as well. Do I create (it's been awhile...bear with me) .ps... Read more

Answer:Best place to buy a Desktop by Thankgiving Weekend?

Greetings, Stephanie...

I've always had good purchasing, variety, and support experiences with Best Buy, and with the economy situation, I'm sure they would price-match any better deals...

It's going to be hard to find an in-store machine with XP installed - most outlets are really pushing Win 7, or trying to clear out the Vista models...

As far as the Outlook Express, I'm not familiar with the exact procedures, but there should be an Export function that will transfer files to another computer...

Data file transfer can always be tricky when you let Windows handle it - my preference would be to use a USB flash drive to just copy/paste data between'll have to reinstall any programs he's using on the new machine, anyway...

Good luck - and I hope your father enjoys his Thanksgiving gift!

When my start date falls on a weekend, how can I make the following Monday my Day 0?Say start date is Feb 7 (Sat), and I need to add three workdays (Feb 9 Mon considered as Day 0).Excel returns Feb 11 (Wed) as Day 3 when I need to assume that when start date falls on a weekend, it won't be counted just yet.e.g.What I need:Start Date: Feb 7 or 8 (Sat or Sun) - considered excludedDay 0: Feb 9 (Mon)Day 1: Feb 10 (Tue)Day 2: Feb 11 (Wed)Day 3: Feb 12 (Thu)What excel gives me:Start Date: Feb 7 or 8 (Sat or Sun) as Day 0Day 1: Feb 9 (Mon)Day 2: Feb 10 (Tue)Day 3: Feb 11 (Wed)** Note that I can't just add 1 to my formula because it would affect those start dates that falls on a weekday.

Answer:How to add workday when start date is weekend?

Did you see my earlier response? I believe I gave you the generic solution, which returned the Day 0 date of the following Monday when the Start Date fell on a weekend.A slight modification gives you the "2 cell" A1:A2 (Start Date:Deadline) solution you are looking for:=IF(OR(WEEKDAY(A1)=1,WEEKDAY(A1)=7),WORKDAY(A1,4),WORKDAY(A1,3))All you need to do is check and see if the start date falls on a weekend day (with the WEEKDAY function) and then set your WORKDAY function as required.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.message edited by DerbyDad03

Hi guys,

Not been on these forums long but have been reading all your advice and tutorials ahead of a W7 install this weekend.

Intention was to follow barefoot kids advice and create a new partition to the left of my vista os on my c: and then install 7 to it and dual boot till I'm happy with W7 and then remove, erase and reclaim vistas space for 7

Ahead of this I investigated macrium reflect to image c: first as I thought this was a sensible plan. Followed super helpful bid tutorial here and set my c:/ image off and was browsing this forum when I got a cyclic redundancy check error and macrium failed. It suggested I run chkdsk /f /r so I elected my cmd and did so on a restart.

4 bad clusters found and fixed. Free space verification (stage 5 of 5 still running - 47% complete). No other issues found so far.

So. How bad does this sound? Is my hdd about to throw it's toys out the pram or ar 4 bad clusters nothing to worry about?

Back up your files first as it may need to surface repair sectors where there could be data loss.
