windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Question: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Are they all OK or are they as bad as the other ? I think I rather play w/o them but it is not possible anymore, just too bad.

Preferred Solution: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.
I'm a recovering WoW-a-holic so only know Team speak and Ventrilo.

Prying Mind want to know I just installed my Origin games in Windows 8.1 Over again.

Answer:Does a install of Windows 10 Affect Steam or Origin in anyway?

post makes no sense.
You need to clarify what the issue is and what you did to bring about said issue.

I don't think it's a lack of coffee that's causing me to not understand, as I've just about finished my pot.

I'm having issues steam origin or uplay on secondary hd i have never had this issue on windows 7. I did a full fresh install to windows 10 and i'm having this error were i cant delete or run steam or origin or uplay or run any games from my 2nd hd i am on the administrator account.
Please help me.

Answer:Cant install steam origin or uplay on secondary hd

Exactly what error message are you getting? We need more info other than "I can't delete" and "I can't run"
When you go to install these (Steam, Origin, and Uplay), are you choosing to install them (the game hubs themselves) to the secondary drive? Also, in each service's settings (Steam for example) there's settings to choose where to install the games.
Maybe you could try starting over. Right click on the Start button and choose "Programs and Features" at the top of the list. Then scroll down the list, right click on Steam and uninstall. If it won't uninstall it from here, then you'll have to manually remove the Steam folders. (The default location is c:\program files\steam) Then run the installer again, paying attention during the install process, and choose your secondary HDD for the install location. This applies to Steam, as well as the others (Origin, Uplay, Epic games, etc) I have them all installed as well, with many games installed on different drives and have zero issues.
If you still have problems, there's tons of help to be found on the Steampowered site. Here's an example; moving an existing Steam installation to a different drive location. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7710-tdlc-0426
I hope some of that helps. We're more than happy to help you here, but need more info to work with. Let us know how it goes!

After the first initial attempts with steam i then moved on to trying Origin and UPlay and then discovered that they were also unable to connect to the internet, and not sure if its related to this but superanti spyware is unable to update its definitions, i noticed this happening around the same time as everything else.

Answer:Something blocking Steam/Origin/UPlay internet access

What are your security software install? Did you check your Windows firewall to see if its getting block by connecting? Try them to put on exclusion to see if its working.

just got my yoga pro 2 with the i5 for school and to play some older RTS games like warhammer or CofH i switched the screen res to more normal sizes and it only helped a little.  the games intro titles will display with sound then flicker to cut out and boot me back to the desktop with the app still running. I can click on the app again to somewhat continue where i left off but i can never keep the program running.  is this a directX problem or is it still a screen resolution conflict? ive restarted a few times and still hasnt worked.  has anyone had simliar issues with launching games? im not very experienced with installing pc games since this is my first pc in long time.  any other steps i should troubleshoot? thanks,

Answer:Yoga Pro 2-cant fully launch games from steam/origin

I've bought and downloaded a number of games from Steam. For a while, they worked fine, but now almost all of them start up and almost immediately quit to the desktop, although often the sound continues to play. Sometimes the cursor/pointer is limted to the upper left-hand part of the screen. I've repeatedly asked Steam for help, but they've never answered. I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 that doesn't have this problem. The only other software I loaded onto the Yoga 2 Pro was Kapersky Internet Security, but disabling that doesn't help. I suspect some sort of interaction with the Lenovo system software. Please help!

I have just bought the above game, but when I tried to install this I had to also install steam and Windows Live Marketplace. I hate being forced to load software which I don't really want notwithstanding developers insistence. Anyway Windows Marketplace wouldn't load and it said that a hotfix was required for XP. I created a restore point and then installed the hotfix. I then tried to access the Marketplace to download my bonus content, which I was due as part of the pre-order offer with Game. However I can no longer send or receive any e-mails ??. I can still access the internet it just appears to have affected Outlook. Is anyone similarly affected?, does anyone know a way to fix this?. Steam appears to be working OK, notwithstanding the problems I had in the past with Half Life 2. In HL2 the game continually crashed and in the end I got so frustrared that I uninstalled the same and swore never to have anything to do with HL2 again. The game was binned.

If the email issue has just started, and you are with Tiscali, the servers are down....If not then I can't see why STeam (although I agree with you about not using it) would cause your mail to stop working.

I recently downloaded and finished playing Fallout 3 via Steam. Never having come into contact with Games for Windows LIVE before, I didn't think to sign into my LIVE/360 account before I started playing - who knows if that actually has anything to do with this.

OK, so I finished it, loved it, and decided to try 'The Pitt' DLC. I downloaded the Games for Windows client, purchased the DLC, downloaded it and now it says it's installed. I then started Fallout, figure out that in order to access the DLC I need to be signed into LIVE, which I did. It installs an update for Fallout and then restarts the game (still scratching my head as to why this update wasn't available via Steam . . . maybe it doesn't apply when the game is being played independently of LIVE? probably beside the point) and then asks for my CD key . . . never had to input this before, but I pull it out from the Steam game properties no prob, input it and everything seems fine. Now I can sign into LIVE when I start Fallout which I purchased via Steam (layers and layers of useless, poorly designed interfaces and DRM, but that's another story, it just amuses me).

Here's the problem (finally, right?) - After starting Fallout and signing into Live, I can see that 'The Pitt' is available under the downloads section of the main Fallout menu, but when I click on it nothing happens. It just makes a clicking sound, but doesn't actually start the game up AT ALL. Soo... Read more

Answer:Fallout 3 The Pitt on PC via Steam and Games for Windows LIVE

Oh crappit. I think I just figured out the problem and it's BIG. The DLCs aren't separate games, they're extensions of the game as a whole, meaning that I travel to Pittsburgh as a separate side-mission, yet I'm still playing Fallout 3 proper? That's it, isn't it? I pray somebody tells me otherwise, b/c I played through the game WITHOUT being signed into LIVE, which means I can't access my game saves while I AM signed into it. Suck, suck, suck! Ok, so if I'm right, then the question becomes: is there any way to import my offline game saves into my LIVE account? Probably not, but it's worth asking I figure.

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

A quarter century ago, Windows wasn't everywhere. In fact, some were doubtful it would ever ship at all.

At that point Windows was no longer considered the company?s star project, as it had become a bit of an embarrassment. Even internally there were doubts among some in the company that Windows would ever ship. Also, because Ballmer had already burned though four product managers to try to get there?people who now had been either reassigned or were no longer at Microsoft?the product was developing a reputation for career death.

My NE 522 came with Windows 8 64-bit but when I was informed that I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free I jumped on it. I remember having to stair-step to 8.1 then 10 during installation. Everything seemed to be fine for a few months then the BSOD. I managed to get it going again for a short time and now the Laptop is not operational. At startup I get the Gateway logo then a blue screen saying "Default boot device missing..." I get past this using the "recovery" stick I made just after purchase but I get "Choose keyboard layout" then "Troubleshoot or Turn off" as options. I have used the Troubleshoot Path to get to the command prompt. I also can get through POST and access the InsydeH20 startup utility (BIOS) which I use to unfreeze the HDD password (not sure why it keep freezing). Refresh, Reset, Restore and Automatic Repair all fail. From command prompt I access x:\Program Files <x86>> desktop.ini and see one HDD (Boot) with 27.6 MB free of 30.0 MB. I also see the Removable Storage devices.

The top of the command window says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]" Does this mean Windows is installed?
If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

Answer:OS origin for Laptop or Windows 10

AFRet96 said:

No need for Win8, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10. Your successful upgrade from 8 to 10 has recorded a Digital Licence tied to your PC's hardware on Microsoft's activation servers. Do a clean install of 10 (making sure you install the same version as you had before, Home or Pro) and when it asks for a key skip this with the 'I don't have one' or 'register later' option. Once installed your Digital Licence will automatically activate the new install.

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal, except from when I tried a system restore.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

Not sure if many of you noticed, but post Windows Insider build 14936, the Steam overlay would refuse to work with 64 bit games. Starting with the public beta build of Steam that is available today, that issue is resolved.

You can opt in to Steam beta builds by going to Steam's settings>Account and clicking the "Change" button under the Beta Participation header. Select "Steam Beta Update" from the dropdown menu, hit OK and then hit the button to restart Steam.

As with any beta builds, you may experience bugs. I haven't run into any showstoppers in the time I've been running Steam betas, but your mileage may vary.

Hi guys,

I've just started a new job and with it I get a nice shiny new computer. Since my netbook has the computing power of a calculator I haven't been able to play my favorite Steam games for a couple of months. Now I have a job, I wanna start playing these games!

I installed Steam after a fresh reformat and installation of Windows XP Professional SP2. Once installed and self-updated, I get the following popup

Fatal Error: Could not load module bin/vgui2.dllClick to expand...

The first thing I did was check Steam support, where they have the following two solutions (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9672-LWMF-6128):

Multiple installations of Steam said:

1. Browse to the Steam installation folder (C:\Program Files\Steam by default) for the Steam installation you would like to move.
2. Move the steamapps folder from the Steam installation folder to your desktop.
3. Review the Uninstalling Steam topic for instructions to uninstall Steam (this must be done to remove your old Steam installation settings from the Windows Registry).
4. Review the Installing Steam topic for instructions to re-install Steam to the desired location.
5. Move the steamapps folder into the new Steam installation folder to copy all of your downloaded game content, settings, and saved games to the new location.
6. Start Steam and log in to your existing Steam account to confirm that the move was successful.

hey there,
for a good while now i've been occasionally seeing a spike in my CPU usage, when i opened the performance monitor, it showed that "Xboxstat" is the process that's causes the extra load, after googling, it's a legit process but it's only used to run the Xbox controller for windows and should not under any circumstances hog 25% of my cpu load! (i have i5 3570k quad core process Running @4.4 GHz!)
lately this spike started happening again, but this time the process shows up as "Steam" in the performance monitor, and sure, i do have it installed, but it's not running at the time, and i didn't even set it to run when windows start!
the problem now is p[retty much identical to this thread:
a while back now, my PC was infected with a VBS script that turns every thing into shortcuts on any removable driver, the original script was on my C partition and it was not detected by any antivirus at all! i had to track it down and remove it manually, but i found a program called USBfix that's supposed to remove this particular script,
http://www.en.usbfix.net/
well, it worked, i guess..but i have already removed the original script manually like i said, and this program looks a bit dodgy too, so i thought i would state this as past history of infection, maybe it's related..

Hi !! First time here (as many I think, so Hello again !!)
First of all, I'm French (well, excuse me for my (sadly) bad english ).
I've seen many BSOD marked as answered, so I'm trying here 'cause I've exhausted all my skills .

Bug Description:
Before wiping win 7:
BSOD and freeze time to time on WebBrowsing, log on screen, Steam Description. Always BSOD hal.dll (hal+0x12A3B)

After wiping Win 7 : - BSOD on The Witcher 3 (only game reinstalled ^^) (almost everytime same same moment, same moment). And everytime on Steam in any game description. Clicking on game, video charging 2 sec and freeze or BSOD.

Background: I have performed a new Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 installation 3 days ago, and still nothing.
What I have tried :
- MemTest with solo memory, and with both memory
- OCCT for GPU/CPU/Power Supply
- Hd Tune for SSD/HDD
- Almost all drivers up to date (not all but GPU, SDD Firmware, BIOS, and some others)
- Up to date Win 7
- Tried uplug all component except SSD (OS), and the BSOD was still there but many minutes later as usual
- Change RAM slot and playing with 1 ram only
- no Overcloking performed
- 100% fan speed and heat never go higher than 65? Celsius for GPU and 60 for CPU on stress mode
- Safe Mode and no freeze on Steam (althrough I can test The Witcher 3 on Safe mode ^^)

Config on my description for major components !

I'm really need help on this one, and I hope I have created the thread like you want. (Say anything and I'll correct without questi... Read more

Answer:BSOD Steam Games & Freeze (always) on Steam error 0x124

Stop 0x124 is usually a hardware related issue, but actually it may be caused by anything and everything in the computers environment. Unfortunately the crash dumps are not very effective for the 0x124 BSODs.

Please read this: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

Read the article carefully. Proceed with the remaining tests. Let us know if any assistance or clarification is needed.

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6...994-1243064377

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

I just finished developing and shipping this app for pinning your Steam games to the Start menu. Instead of the dreary icon tiles you'll have nice looking wide and square tiles for your games! It's really easy and fast to use too.

More updates are coming soon possibly with friends lists and live tiles.

Please check it out and feedback is very welcome!

The trackpoint middle scrolling button doesn't work for some of the newer applications such as ITunes, the newest versions of Picasa, Windows Live Mail, Safari, and Windows Live Writer.Below is a fix applicable to all Windows OS's. The location of the edited file may vary so look in the Device Manager under trackpoint driver details to find driver locations. The file must be edited as an administrator in Vista and Windows 7. To do this, at the programs box type in notepad and on the notpad program in the menu right click and select, "Run as Administrator."In Win7 x64 it is located at: (edit with Notepad run as Administrator).c:\Program Files\Lenovo\Trackpoint\tp4table.dat; Google Picasa*,*,picasa3.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9; Windows Live Mail*,*,wlmail.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9; Windows Live Writer*,*,WindowsLiveWriter.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9; Apple ITunes*,*,itunes.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9; Apple Safari*,*,safari.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9Especially for "X" series owners that do not have the touchpad this is helpful. Thanks for the tip by Matthew Kohut of Lenovo for mentioning that this technique had previously been done for other programs such as OpenOffice.Message Edited by dfumento on 05-13-2009 12:12 PMMessage Edited by dfumento on 05-13-2009 12:13 PMMessage Edited by dfumento on 05-13-2009 12:14 PM

I downloaded Windows Live Essentials for the messenger but now I would like to unistall it. I went to Uninstall/Change Programs in my control panel to uninstall it and I noticed a program called Windows Live Mesh activex control for remote connections. What is that for? and can I uninstall that as well? My dilemma here is that I cannot seem to uninstall Windows Live Essentiials. I double clicked on it in the Uninstall/Change Programs list and and was given a window that gave me the options:
1)remove one or more Windows Live Programs
2)Repair all Windows Live Programs

I clicked on the first option but it never let me choose which programs to uninstall. It just quickly flashed a window that said "uninstalling" and then it showed me "Done! Your programs you selected have been uninstalled." I didn't get to select anything to uninstall though. In the end, Windows Live essential is still installed and I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions guys?

Answer:Uninstalling Windows Live Essentials and windows live mesh activex control for remote connections

Someone else will have to advise you regarding Windows Live Mesh. I know nothing about that. For Windows Live Essentials: If you cannot remove WLE using add remove programs try Revo Uninstaller. If I remember correctly it will not ask which components you want to remove. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. Scroll down the page for the free version download. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is do... Read more

Powered up my pc today, click on Counter Strike: Source, Windows says 'The item 'steam'.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?'. I navigate to C:\program files\steam\steamapps\relay993\counter-strike: source and try to open hl2.exe from there, nothing happens. I also have the same problem with Team Fortress Classic. If I try and open Steam itself, the updating menu pops up. Steam - Updating - 0% completely. Underneath it, 'Steam is temporarily unavailable. Please try back later.' Been like this for hour snow.

I was able to play Steam games fine yesterday and back.

I'm running Windows Vista.

What way do you prefer to read your email?
I previously used Windows Live Mail (Desktop) bundled with Messenger. But now that Hotmail works super smooth in Internet Explorer 9 & includes messenger, the desktop version seems redundant. Using the browser savings firing up two additional programmes.
Microsoft appears to be concentrating their energy on Internet Explorer & Hotmail.com.

Answer:Windows Live Mail (Desktop) vs. Windows Live Hotmail (browser)

I agree to a point, Microsoft does look to be focusing its energies on improving IE9 and Hotmail.com. Comparatively, I do find my Windows Live Hotmail (desktop) to be sluggish at times and quite a bit of a resource hog. But I nevertheless prefer to sue it because of the convenience. It remains in my system tray and notifies me when mail arrives. You need not have Messenger load when WLM does; you can always seperate the two.
Therefore prefer using WLM (desktop).

Hi all!

Just starting out on this forum, so I hope you can help me out.

I have a program installed that uses a dll. Recently, I started getting the following error message:
"The application or dll xxxx is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." (xxxx being my dll path and name; message translated from french, but I'm sure you'll recognise it, I've seen the same kind on the forums elsewhere)

My issue is not to replace the dll, I know it's not corrupt, but it is in a weird format, which might explain the message.

However, what I'd like to know is why windows is suddenly so worried about this dll, and if there's anything I can do to simply tell windows to ignore it. At which point does windows decide to check this local dll? (the program is installed locally in it's own folders, nothing in system32 or elsewhere)

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:origin of message : "xxx is not a valid windows image."

Generally this error means you got the wrong version of the dll installed. IE you are running XP and installed one for Win98 and the one for XP is slightly different.

Sometimes this is a path issue and all you need to do is to copy (not move) the DLL and put it with the others in System32

In addition there are a few specific problems which cause this type of error
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907300

Autocad also has a similar problem for which there is a patch.
So please be more specific.
Is this just one dll? If so what is it?
What application and what consequence?

You should also try reregistering the dll
using your example
go to start / run and type
regsvr32 xxxx.dll
hit enter and wait for it to say success

Just wondering if anyone else has had the following experiences recently;

First, when I opened Windows Live Mail today, one fortnightly recurring event notification from my Live Calendar started sending reminders via Live Mail to me. About ten events were immediately loaded and showed as Emails in my In Box. I deleted [unopened] all the subject Emails, followed immediately by emptying of the contents of the Deleted Folder.

However, the Emails kept coming, and the only way to stop the problem was to open the Calendar, select the subject Event and delete all future recurring instances. By that time, Emails for notifications into the middle of 2011 had been received, and I treated those the same way as detailed above.

Second, for the first Email that I wished to send after this strange behaviour, this anti-spam security clearance panel appeared;

I needed to complete the clearance, before the Live Mail email was sent.

Now I'm left wondering what this was all about?

Windows 7 only
Are you are fed up with having Messenger or mail open on your task bar and want to revert back to the good old days of XP and Vista with them nicely hidden in your notifications?
Then this is for you... Make sure the programs are closed before you start.
If you right click on the programs short cut or executable file then go to "Properties". Then click on the "Compatibility" tab and select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for." box.
Select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" from the drop down menu and finally select "OK".
This will put Live Messenger in the notifications but for live mail you will then need to right click on the notifications icon and select "Hide window when minimized".
Note: The Live mail option "Hide window when minimized" only becomes available when running in Compatibility Mode.
I hope this helps some one as I have been trying to tweak this for a while now and I am happy to have found a solution.

Answer:Hide Live Messenger & Live Mail in notifications area in Windows 7.

This is a slightly annoying problem. I've disabled Windows Live Messenger from starting up, both through Messenger's options and through MSCONFIG. The program doesn't start when Windows starts. But when I log on to Windows Live Mail through a web browser, Messenger starts up on it's own. I cannot figure out a way to disable this. I've looked through Live Mail options and can't find anything to denote starting up the program. I only use my Live Mail account for junk mail, but need to check it occasionally and would prefer it if Messenger didn't start up on it's own.

Hey everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this one. I don't know what's going on. I never had any problems installing MSN Live before and now, it's a real pain.

I just got my PC back from the tech guy. He formated my computer and reinstalled Windows XP including the Updates.

Now at home, I'm trying to install Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and it's not working. It's giving me errors like, to check that I have enough hard disk space (I have 176 GB free space), If my computer has a firewall ( I don't), and that I make sure that my computer meets the system requirements ( I do meet the requirements).

Now, I don't know what to do anymore to get MSN Live.

Can please someone help me with this?

Microsoft kicked off the month of May by announcing that they are discontinuing the Windows Live brand, saying the Windows Live apps and services were built on versions of Windows that weren’t designed to connect to a cloud service and citing customer confusion. They released a chart showing the transition process for many of the current services.

This seems to be further confirmation of Microsoft’s “all in” commitment to the cloud, but had some folks worried that we’re going to lose some of our most useful applications, such as Windows Live Writer. A petition sprang up to beg Microsoft not to kill it.

A tweet from Chris Jones (Windows Live VP) on May 3 seems to lay those fears to rest, saying: “all desktop apps work great and are supported on Windows 8, including WL Writer.”

Answer:Windows Live is dead, long live WL apps - WinNews.com

I would have thought someone at Microsoft might have considered these points before forcing the whole world to accept Live Mail, a very poor substitute for Outlook Express - and not very well thought through in respect of useability

If you ever wanted to paste an image into Windows Live Writer, or pasting a Microsoft Word page, Visual Studio Page? HTML Image or Fragment, check out Clipboard Live.
Clipboard Live opens up the paste functions of your clipboard. You can paste Images as local files or pointed to their original http:// address. Paste HTML Fragments leaving the formatting and they will include images.
Paste a word document with the formatting or just adjust the settings page and paste it with no formatting at all. You can paste anything and everything that is useful in your clipboard. You can adjust the settings to choose how you want your content to look on each paste. Instead of clicking Ctrl-V, just click the Clipboard Live plugin and let it do the rest. Windows Live Gallery

Answer:Paste an image into Windows Live Writer Clipboard Live

That makes a lot of sense and finally give me a shine why last time I would like to send an image pasting it, I get it shared rather than send it like it was happening many times ago.

Windows Live Mail & Windows Live Hotmail Plus

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use at times both the WLM & W Live Hotmail Plus.

If I use the Hotmail I can not place a foto in the body of a message however I can send
one as a attchment.

If I use the WLM I can add a text sig, a foto sig, or both if I use the layout format and
stored pics.

What puzzles me is if wish to set-up a permanent sig I can create the text but when I
attempt to add a foto and select the source the system opens but when I select pics
the file is empty.

My sequence to try to set up a sig is as follows:

Select NEW message, then I go to the tools, options, and signature

Thanks for any info

I find the assocation of windows live mail and messenger very annoying. In WL Mail, I use both my hotmail and gmail accounts. I prefer to save my passwords so I don't have to enter them every time I open my mail. However, if I get WL Mail to rememberr my passwords, my hotmail account automatically pops up first when I want to sign into WL Messenger, even though I never use hotmail in messenger (just the gmail sign-in). So now, I always have to change the sign-in information on messenger because somehow it prefers my hotmail account.
Simply clickinig 'forget me' in WL Messenger is not the solution since this also makes WL Mail forget my hotmail password, so I have to enter this one very time I open my mail.

So somehow I would like to dissociate the two, to have WL Mail to remember my passwords, but WL Messenger to forget the hotmail account. Does anyone know if there's any way to do so? I hate these automatic associations that you don't have any control over!

I was reading the threads about MS Silverlight.

Finishing up the How to Protect Yourself from Malware! Sticky, I have everything on my computer up-to-date and working well. I had gone to Microsoft Update and accepted most of the available updates. I just went from IE6 to IE7; I am holding off on IE8, the only high priority update I have not accepted. Of optional software updates, what?s left are Silverlight, MS Office Live Add-in, and MS Windows Live Essentials.

I gather that Microsoft would like Silverlight to be a competitor to Adobe Flash. However, I have never knowingly come across a website that required Silverlight for viewing until just recently. I came across a Mark Russinovich video on security that indicated Silverlight was needed. Perhaps I could have viewed it anyway (?) but, because I had not installed Silverlight, I passed. Is anyone finding much need for it?

Regarding the two Live items, I don?t see much need for them at this point. I?d just as soon keep all my files on my computer. Is anyone using these Live services and why?

Answer:MS Silverlight, Office Live Add-in, and Windows Live Essentials

You are right to not get those "updates".

I have only ever came across one site that needed silverlight and it was the ITV-Player so i didnt watch the vid

The whole "live" thing is crapware to me.

I got a new laptop, a Toshiba C55t-A. It came with Windows 8. I'm not much of a gamer, but my son plays Steam games on it.

He says that his Steam games don't work right, and showed me what he was talking about.

He went into Team Fortress 2, and while he can walk with W, and look around with the touchpad, he can't do both simultaneously.

Is this possibly a setting or something that we're missing?

Answer:Windows 8 and Steam?

I don't play team fortress 2, but I do have windows 8 and play a few steam games, and they work just fine.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but just wanted to get that out that windows 8 is probably not the issue.

I fully understand the stigma behind developers basically looking away from developing great game titles for Windows 8, but now with this massive turnaround for Windows Phones and the now public release of this amazing comeback for Microsoft, Windows 10, here are a few titles I think would stand to make a comeback through the Microsoft Store...KAMI - State of Play GamesHundreds - SemisecretInfinity Blade 1, 2, and 3 - Chair Entertainment and Epic GamesThe Walking Dead Seasons 1 & 2 - Telltale GamesClash of Clans - SupercellSplice - Cipher PrimeOSMOS - Hemisphere Games EDGE - MobigameEDGE Extended - MobigameSmash Hit - Mediocre Games
Anyone else have any ports you'd like to see in the new Microsoft Store?

It's becoming something of a ritual with some tech sites to look at the various system surveys out there every month to check on Windows 8's progress and this one has been the most surprising to me especially considering the vitriolic and loud opposition to Windows 8 in a PC gaming forums like this one. I know that there's tons of classic UI replacements and such but those don't seem to be particularly effective in ameliorating the disdain of 8 for many people. What’s just as interesting though not as surprising is the complete lack of traction that Linux is showing on Steam, its share on Steam is actually dropping after the official Steam on Linux release. It kind of makes me wonder just how realistic a Linux based Steam box is at this point, particularly in a year with the PS4 and new Xbox on the way.

I figure that there will be those that of course will dispute the numbers but the rate here is so much higher than the general web traffic counters that I think there’s more to it than bad numbers. So is it that gamers appreciate the architectural improvements in Windows 8 and just deal with the UI or use a UI replacement. Are these numbers totally out of whack? Is this what you would have expected?

Answer:So why does Windows 8 seem to be doing well with PC gamers... at least on Steam

I find that gamers lead the way for Windows versions.

This is really strange.
I don't know if Windows 7 recently had some strange update or glitch but even though I'm logged in as administrator it's almost acting like I'm not.

If I click on my Steam shortcut it wants to verify installation and acts like it's not installed and wants to run bootstrap. If I right click and run as admin it runs normally.

The C:Users\(name) folder has a locked icon on it that was not there before.
Any idea what change(s) may have happened here and how to fix this? I see admin symbols on a bunch of my shortcuts that weren't there yesterday so best I can gauge I'm still on the machine and there are no other accounts except mine which is set as admin

Best I can see: Even though I'm using my admin account it's acting like I'm not logged in as admin. There are no other accounts, no settings that stand out to me... I'm stumped.

Thanks for help.

Answer:Windows 7, Steam issue, or both?

Create another Admin account, login and see if you have the same issue.

Steam Hardware & Software Survey

If you click on OS, you can see that Windows 8 now accounts for 7% of all steam usage, while Windows 7 accounts for 70%, which means that Windows 8 is already (after only two months) in use by heavy gamers by a growing percentage.

Windows 7 lost 2% of share. It seem s that a lot of XP and Vista users jumped Windows 7 and went to 8.

Answer:Windows 8 already accounts for 10% of W7 Steam

The reason I went to Widows 8 was because the laptop I wanted and bought was cheaper pre-installed with Windows 8 than with Windows 7. Otherwise, I would have bought it with Windows 7. I suppose I can take credit for helping that Steam statistic a little. A lot of pre-installed Windows 8 systems shipped in the last couple of months since Windows 8 was officially launched only a couple of months ago and major PC/laptop manufacturers offered it pre-installed. So those figures indeed make sense.

Why does Microsoft want so much money for little teeny copies of XP Home or Vista basic? Most consumers use their computer about 5 hours a week (think of your relatives over 25) and that is worth $90 or something?

But then there are e-machines desktops that have Windows already on for like $250, so now it's not expensive?

And as Valve/Steam has shown, us, LOWERING the price will INCREASE revenues. Sales for $50 Left For Dead are slow, cut the price in half it goes up, take it to $9.99 and their sales EXPLODED. Windows should hit $40 by now, big deal.

But I will say the May 5th Windows 7 free year is a positive sign.

Answer:Windows vs Steam/Linux

When was the last time your Average Joe actually bought a retail copy of Windows? Most people upgrade or purchase their OS... when they buy that new Dell, HP, E-Macheap etc etc.

It started yesterday when I attempted to launch a game (Civilization V) through Steam and got the BSOD error. I uninstalled and re-installed Steam, my graphics drivers, everything I can possibly think of, including a general fix Steam itself responded to me with (which was completely unspecific to my issue - they clearly can't be bothered), and I am to the point where I have asked for a refund for my games, because it is just that hopeless.

In a last ditch effort to get my computer straight, I downloaded BlueScreenView, and this is what it has told me; Mind you, there are multiple errors.

From this afternoon (before driver re-install and disc check):
- SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION 0x0000003B
- File names listed as issues: ntoskrnl.exe and tcpip.sys
I also had this issue last night

More recently (after all of my "fixes"):
- DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x000000d1
- File names listed as issues: athrx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe (again)

Even in older crashes, ntoskrnl.exe has been listed as an issue, and I don't have enough knowledge of this sort of thing to have any idea what this means! Is there hope for me?

Answer:Steam stuck on "Connecting steam account..."

Hi Rami1990,

Try going to your Steam folder and deleting 'ClientRegistry.blob' and restart Steam, this has cleared up problems for me a few times.

If you're unsure of the directory:

Start > Computer > C:\ (Local Disk) > Program Files > Steam

Typically - C:\Program Files\Steam
64-bit users - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

It?s the Windows 10 Disaster on Steam as Gamers Return to Windows 7

Microsoft started the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update rollout on October 17, but this didn?t impress Steam gamers who have apparently returned to Windows 7 en-masse the last month.

Valve?s latest statistics show that Windows 10 64-bit lost no less than 17.14 percent of its share on the gaming platform, which is pretty much the biggest drop an operating system has ever experienced on Steam. At the same time, Windows 7 64-bit recorded an impressive growth of no less than 22.59 percent, re-becoming the top desktop operating system for gaming with 63.60 percent.

Windows 8.1 is third with 3.09 percent, far away from Windows 10?s 28.23 percent current Steam share, while the 32-bit version of Microsoft?s latest operating system is far behind with 0.37 percent.
For what it?s worth, macOS still doesn?t represent a threat to Windows, as Apple?s operating system is only powering 1.60 percent of the systems used for playing games on Steam. The same thing applies to Linux, as the open-source platform is running on 0.35 percent of the gaming machines.

Chinese users suddenly fell in love with gaming
So what has caused the major drop of Windows 10 on Steam? While there could be many reasons for this sudden decline, including inaccurate data from Valve, it turns out that another substantial share change was experienced in the case of languages being used to play games on Steam.

Last month, English lost ... Read more

I don't use wlm to connect to outlook.
So, after 30th June will I be still able to use wlm and use my [email protected] email?
Even if the answer to the above is yes do we think the writing is on the wall for wlm anyway?
Thanks.

Answer:Windows Live Mail and live.co.uk question

I have been using WLM since its introduction, and I plan to keep on using it.
I have a pop account and a Hotmail account configured in it.
If something goes awry on my Hotmail account, I can always access my Hotmail account via my web browser. Does not bother me.

Writing on the wall ?
Maybe. There are always other email clients capable to do the same job.
I'll never use the Mail app. It sucks.

Hi all,

I'm having a problem when I try to launch Steam games, as whatever game I try to launch doesn't actually launch. A message comes up about the game "preparing to launch" but then nothing after that happens. Some games give me an error saying Steam is not running at all, whereas others just do nothing.

I've already completed all the troubleshooting steps on Steam's website but none of them have actually fixed it. The only temporary fix that works is restarting Steam, but this becomes very annoying when I have to do it multiple times a day every time I want to play a game.

I was in the same situation, set Communication to do nothing, push to talk in steam, maxed receive volume in steam, every thing out there. Then I decided to try again killing audiodg.exe (it's a service called "Windows audio device graph isolation") you can find it in 'Task Manager' under 'Details' and kill it, or under 'Services' and stop it (be careful that it needs to be set on auto start for what I did to work or you need to start it manually your self again). I recommend killing the .exe in 'Details' though (faster) also note that this didn't work for me first try, have no idea why. After you kill the .exe the sound will stop. Switch back to the music app and press play (or restart the music app if it's stubborn) this should start again the audiodg.exe service, and sound should work again (this solved it for me, down side, have to do it every time I restart the computer).
Now some people report that this is not enough and they got it solved after also killing WWAHost.exe (note this is the 'ja... Read more

After downloading and installing the Anniversary Update (AU), I went to play one of my Steam games and got...nothing. Apparently the AU has borked Steam, although it seems to be happening for some and not all. I guess I was one of the "lucky" ones. I updated my PC from Win 7 to 10 last August and, heretofore, never really had any problems.

I'm not looking for assistance per se; rather, just to forewarn people of possible ramifications from the AU update.

With windows 10 loaded the HP Stream 11 and 13 will have minimum diskspace. I want to list the steps that you can take to over come this issue. I haven't seen all of these remedies posted any where. So, this is what I have found to make a bad situation better. 1.  Install memory card 2. In Windows 10 in settings set storage settings to point to the memory card. 3. Instead of having the download folder pointing to c drive have it point to d. That way what is downloaded will be loaded to the memory card. 4. Set virtual memory to 1 gb. Mine was setting at 1.6. I dropped it to 1 gb and I see no difference in performance. I gained about 600 meg by doing this 5. Use the Disk Management tool and look at the partitions that are on drive c. I eliminated all of them except the EFI partition. These partitions get created when you upgreade to a different OS. This was the biggest gain in disk space for me. About 2 gb. I decided I wasn't going backward so I don't need the partitions.  The Disk Management tool will show the partitions. Use the DiskPart.EXE to delete them. DiskPart.EXE is a command prompt tool. 6. Use the disk cleanup tool to get rid of unnecssary files. Be sure to clean up the system files. It's a choice that is in the tool. Hopefully this will be of some help for you to regain some disk space.

A while back, my friend told me he got a new gaming PC. I told him he should get Steam. He tried installing it, but for some reason it wasn't working. He also told me that he was using Windows 7. I told him to try installing it into Program Files, and he said that didn't work. I told him to try installing it under the Admin user, and he said that he tried it and that it didn't work either. I think this was about March 20th, 2010, maybe a little before, maybe a little after. I know it was around that time because that's when I got the Orange Box, and thus Steam. I got an achievement fairly quickly, and the earliest achievement I can find on my TF2 achievements page is March 20th.

Any suggestions to fix the problem?

I think I might be able to ask for more information tomorrow.

(The reason I haven't posted about this before is because this was before I joined the site, and I didn't remember about it until today. :P)

Answer:Trouble Installing Steam on Windows 7?

Steam should install no problem. I have done it on every install of Win7 since the very first Beta. It is something specific with his system if it doesn't install and he has to start troubleshooting it. Run chkdsk /r /f and sfc .scannow to start.

I keep getting what I've gathered is the new BSOD when using the internet or playing Steam Games. The computer locks up for a second before going to these weird static bars running across the screen and changing every second or so before restarting. Sometimes, the screen just locks up for about 30 seconds and then the computer returns to "normal". I have also experienced two times where the computer screen starts to fade to white from the bottom right side after locking up and going to a black screen.

I have attached my folder as instructed.

In addition, I was able to get the error code after the computer restarted on one crash-
