Best hardware for hosting Server?

Question: Best hardware for hosting Server?

I have to PC's of similar spec, and I can't decide which one is better to run game servers on like COD, COD4, UT2004 ect and a teamspeak server. Both run windows XP Pro
(This is only for a LAN btw)
First one is an old HP ProLiant Server ML 310 G1
It has a 2.80Ghz CPU
2gb RAM PC2100R
2 WD800 setup in RAID 0 (supposedly 7200 rpm but they are old now)
Intergrated 1gb/s network card.
Only has USB 1.0 ports
IDE Raid Controller
Also put page file on another intenral system disk

Or a Dell Optiplex GX270
2.6Ghz Pentium 4 With Hyper Threading.
1.5 Gb RAM DDR PC2700
PCI 1gb/s Network Card
WD5000 Harddrive (seems to get very hot short time, case has s*** airflow but nothing i can do about that)
Has USB 2.0
Overall the Optiplex seems the faster PC, but the harddrive although new (about 8 months old) is rather loud / cranky

The Proliant is about 6-7 years old atleast, but has more RAM and slightly faster CPU but with hyper threading on the optiplex, would the slightly faster cpu make any difference or not?. However even with the RAID setup, it still seems to have the harddrive as the limiting factor and is noticable secong lag every now and then.
EDIT: Also just bought a high speed usb memory stick, so was thinking i could use a program like eboostr to act as vista ready boost?

Also was thinking of switching the fast ram to the ProLiant server, would this help at all? currently it has ECC Ram, can you mix the too or not?
Just wondering what your guys opiions is!

Many thanks

Preferred Solution: Best hardware for hosting Server?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can't comment on anything except FTP/File Transfer Protocol. I use FileZilla on Windows and Linux Mint, it's free. This has always been a safe download site for me:

could you please tell me the what should be the specifications of a machine on which i can host
a Java Struts Web application? we will be using Apache Tomcat Server and MYSQL(database).

It will be accessed by maximum 5 users,
has 2 dynamic pages accessing 3 to 4 MySql tables(having less than 10 columns each), and
interfaces with an email server.

i need the following information(we will be using windows):

1) Processor and speed
2) RAM
3) Hard disk space required
4) How many partitions of hard disk is needed and space to be allocated for each partition
5) should it be 32 bit or 64 bit(if i go in for 64 bit OS, will it support 32 bit applications -tomcat,mysql,web application developed on 32 bit machine)?

Answer:Hardware requirement for hosting web application

Definitely 64bit, or you won't be able to utilize more than 4GB of RAM, moreover I think last Windows x86 server OS was Server 2008, pretty old in computer years.
You should probably get separate SSD for OS and store data on separate drive (not partition), if possible.
RAM is cheap today, so few extra Gigs shouldn't hurt your wallet.
Most of recent server CPUs should handle your loads fine.

Hello, on my home network I have a dedicated file server wired into my router that is always on. As a little project I would like to set this up as a DNS Server, and have all PCs direct towards this PCs ( for all its DNS resolving. I will still use my ISPs DNS server as a secondary.

What is the simplest way of achieving this? Does WinXP Pro have this capability built-in? I notice in my Admin Tools in Control Panel there is a DNS icon. Will this do? I've found absolutely nothing on the internet about any of this.

I found a program called Simple DNS Plus. Does anyone know if this is any good? Or if there is an open-source solution?

Thanks for any advice.

Question: CS Server hosting?

I want to host a CS server from MY computer, internet of course, So i open it up via Steam. I cclick play games, dedicated server and set it up. But now what do i do? No one joins because it uses my INTERNAL Ip address? How do i find my external IP address?

Also, is there a GOOD Windows CS site with console commands and mods?

Answer:CS Server hosting?

Wouldn't even bother, the amount of bandwidth needed to maintain a server with GOOD ping is crazy, (calculate you need about 20k/s up and down PER user. Not to mention a very good pc with alot of ram, speed, and no background progs running.

generally your terms of service exclude running a server
might want to review it

I want to host my website through my own server in my house, but I have Comcast, and they prohibit use of public servers on their service. Does anyone know any ISPs that allow you to run public servers?

Answer:Hosting a Web Server

Generally speaking, most home ISPs will not allow you to run a public server. They will usually require that you upgrade to the more expensive business connection. However, you do generally get the benefit of a faster connection and a static IP address as well. You may also get an increased upload speed (so you can serve files faster). There are some exceptions to this. I have in the past been able to get permission from Comcast (several years ago) to run my own home server, on the basis that it was for school (I was studying Network Administration at the time) and it was subject to bandwidth and content restrictions.

At work, we do have Comcast Business, and we are able to run a public server. It costs about double what a home connection would cost.

Often the best option is to get inexpensive web hosting from a place like godaddy, which gives you the ability to have a fairly decent amount of control over your server, while being less expensive than getting business hosting.

Hello Every expert here.
Happy thanksgiving.
I am a new bie on Linux, managed to install dual boot with windows 2000 pro with Red Hat 9.
I wanted to run and host a web site for myself maybe 5-10 pages, working to configure how all these work together, and was looking for FREE!! ( I like it).
I have registered a domain name for free (, and now the name servers also for free (you would like for ). I have my pc connected to internet via LINKSYS router on cable modem. Most of the time my ip is static, as I donot turn off the power on router and it keeps same ( at least I ahve seen for a year, the same ip address).
What would I require to configure my to be published to the world.
where would I open the web server port ? Can someone show me the steps. Also when I do a dig command on red hat I get the nameserver but not my ip address, the ip address I get is from my isp. (remember I am using cable modem via router). I have entered the ip address of my machine (not 192.168.xx.xx) but the one I get on router while providing information to my nameserver on
I know you gurus have done this long back, but can you share please ??????
Thankyou very much.

Answer:Hosting a web server on your red hat 9

On the router you have to forward port 80 to the local IP of your Linux box. If you want to use secure HTTP, forward port 443 also.

On your Linux box, make sure you have apache installed and enabled in system services. By default it will serve anything you have in /var/www directory.

First try to access your webpage through the LAN by the local IP address to make sure you have the server set up right.
Then try to access your web server by your public IP to test the port forwarding.
Then try with your registered domain name.

I have hosted a Minecraft server before, but only on one computer. It won't let me run it on any other computer connected to my router. I have forwarded different ports for each computer and assigned that port to the server. I do not run these at the same time. Every time I try to connect to the server it says: Connection refused: connect. This gives me the indication that it recognizes the IP but does not want to connect to it.

You would probably think that this should go on the Minecraft forums, but no one is any help there. They aren't as experienced as the people here. I would love it if someone could help me out.

I have the ports forwarded correctly, hence why it hosts on my laptop... When I change the port forwarding to aim at my desktop it just doesnt seem to work at all...
I have exactly the same internet security on my desktop, that I use for my laptop so it cannot be a firewall preventing it. Could their be an issue or settings that I need to fix on my network adapter?

I'm trying to set up a XMPP server that will be on the Internet, so it can be available for guests to connect from anywhere in the world. As long as they are allowed, I guess.

I was thinking of using OpenFire as the XMPP server, but now I am curious to know where to host it. I did some research and found Linode (Xen VPS Hosting) [website: and they seem pretty chill and devoted to their services. I was able to chat with some of their techs via IRC, so they seem okay. It's about 20 bucks a month for their services.

So, I guess now I am curious to know if:

a) OpenFire is a good choice for someone who's never set up any XMPP servers before

b) Linode is probably too much for a single XMPP server... (maybe I should go for a "cheaper" and less "robust" service? )

Thank you!

Answer:VPS Hosting for a XMPP Server

I used Linode for several years and was very happy with them, their control panel is second-to-none and their support team is great, the service is reliable and well maintained and they were one of the first players in the market so they have a lot of experience. They are a market leader IMO, and I can heartily recommend their services. Pretty inexpensive too, definitely on the lower end of the market, but a bit more 'premium, but no frills' than some of the other offerings out there.

I wouldn't consider any other provider at the $20 price point, but I have seen a few that are lower, for example and

I haven't worked with XMPP so I can't answer your other questions. OpenFire looks to be Java, so it may benefit from more memory than some of the very cheapest VPSs provide (< 128MB often).

How difficult is it to operate a website from home, "hosting" it yourself using your own server equipment in order to avoid having to pay for a "hosting service"? is it very expensive?

what type of equipment would i need? How do you set up such a server?

Answer:Web Hosting from Home server?

You can DL apache web server from for free. Its not to difficult to set up and more secure than IIS.

The only problem you might run into is that many ISP's block port 80, 8080, outgoing. My ISP actually blocks a bunch of ports so I can't run a web server from my house (well I can run it , but only people on my side of the router can see the page). I can run a file server from home though.

I've been considering this idea for some time now, and I'd like to take into consideration the ideas and thoughts of some other people as to whether this has potential and if so what things I should consider.I'm a "hardcore multiplayer gamer"...when you decide to play a game online, you connect to a server...a game server.I have been thinking about setting up a 'game server' hosting company for some time.I've considered many aspects of this and I think the following would be required.A Linux Based Dedicated Server in the UK with at least a 50mbit uplink to the internet with a high bandwidth limit (15GB p/month +), plenty of hard disk space, 1GB+ of ram, and 2GHz + Processor.I know this all seems to be lacking in detail at the moment, but these are my ideas from my initial research.I certainly know there is a large market for this, and am certain I could definitely get customers. If, for example I was paying 150 per month for a Dedicated server, either by myself or with the costs split between a partnership I could be creating a profit from setting up, 10 Gameservers as a start. The average price for a Game Server is now currently 40-45 per month, and of course if there where 10 Servers running w/ paying customers, I'd be turning over 300 per month. It doesn't seem a huge profit, but I'm only currently a student and of course this means I'm not looking for a large income to live the rest of my life on ;)Other things I've thought about are a php/mysql database system, may... My first step would be to remove the router to be sure it is the OS. No sense wasting time trying to fix one or the other without knowing for certain the cause.

You may want to disable windows firewall to and uninstall any AV software to help narrow it down.

Hi, I am trying to host a client server for the game "Counter-Strike".

In the past, after forwarding the correct ports for the Dedicated Server application, I used to be able to run a well maintained game server for up to eight people without consistant and irritable lag on the server. That was almost a year ago.

Now when I try to run my server through my router, lag is in abundance, where no more than 1-2 players can play without the server providing an unplayable environment. I don't know if my router became old and grouchy, or if I can optimize any settings on my router to make it operate as it used to a year ago, with no bandwith issues.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4, which routes my Verizon Online DSL connection. Never have I had problems with this before, but now it seems that my connection can not hold up a small game server anymore. I also have a Pentium 4, 3.0GHz Processor with 1.99GB of DDR1 RAM.

Someone give me advice how to either optimize my router/DSL connection, or what router to purchase for hosting this kind of bandwith use. Thanks in advance.

iam currently getting my hands wet on web hosting stuff and need some assistance.

i have server 03 running iis and setup with dns etc. i registered a domain name with a 3rd party registration company. I have already created a lookup zone in dns for the newly registerd domain name. The server was originally setup as a DC with a local domain name (mydomain.local) thus my full server name at the moment is "servername.mydomain.local".

i want to move my newly registered domain name to my local server. in order to do this i assume i need to change the current name server to my local server which is going to be hosting these sites. My dilemma is what name to use for the name server since my current domain name for the server is a .local domain

I am able to access the webpages created from within my network since i have already created the zone in dns and the wrkstn are using that server as their DNS. Now the hurdle is to determine what server name to use for the nameserver in order to move the newly registerd domain mane unto my local server.

All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ok, what do I need to make this work? This is mostly for fun but I'd really like to know how to do this?

I have a version of "hmailserver" which is supposed to be a free email server that works on XP... which is perfect for my purposes.

Anyway, it seems to install just fine but I'm having problems sending and receiving emails through it.

I have an account at DynDNS and thought I could use DynDNS to get emails to route to this server?

Apparently, I've read some stuff about MX records which I don't understand.

Anyone got any pointers? The idea of hosting my own email server sounds like a great idea. Sure, if my server goes down or the power dies the email won't go anywhere. But I can also set all kinds of cool server side features so I'm really interested in this idea.

Ideally, I don't want to pay anyone money to host a name... but if I do, I want it to be as cheap as possible. I want as much as possible on my home server.

Hi there,Basically I run a website, at the moment im only getting 3Gb of data transfer per month. Basically I need around 30-40gb per month or possibley unlimited. I dont know any host that would do it for me for cheap. Do you know any one that might do it for a very reasonable price, or even if it would be better to buy my own server or buy it from a company that host them, and pay them to run it for me?

Answer:Getting Cheap Hosting or having your own Server ?

That kind of transfer - over a Gigabyte a day - is very high for an ordinary website, but if you really are going to use 30/40 Gigabytes of transfer a month, you should consider running a dedicated server with a web hosting company. You'll have nowhere near enough bandwidth on an ordinary BT landline, and site visitors will be frustrated when they can't connect.Be prepared for some hefty costs though - most hosts charge for bandwidth on a sliding scale.

I wanted to get opinions here on what everyone uses for hosting.

I have a piece of software on our own servers that is killing our internet connection (upload). I'd like to take the software and have it hosted remotely. What I'd need is the ability to remotely log into the machine using RDP to install and manage the software. I don't need to be able to join the machine to our domain or anything, the software runs on its own databases for users and data. Later, I might use the server to host our FTP as well. I think I'll leave our Exchange and web servers here.

What do you guys think?

Just get yourself a nice dedicated server with a good connection and you'll be set.

I've been kickin around the idea of making a website and I want to host it at my house. I don't expect many hits realistically, I can't see their being more than 10-30 hits a day at it's peak. I'm not too concerned about bandwidth and upload speed. It's not going to be more than 1-3 pages with mostly text with some pictures, so I won't be hosting any downloads.

Do any of you host websites at your house? What are the major security concerns? I plan on using Ubuntu 9.04 for it. This is the hardware I was thinking of using, I didn't think it needed to be that powerful and I wanted it to use the least amount of energy possible since it'd be 24/7. - Winsis Wi-01 Black SGCC / ABS Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case 200W Power Supply - Computer Cases - Intel BOXD945GCLF Intel Atom processor 230 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo - Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo - Crucial 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory - Seagate ST9120817AS 120GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Laptop Hard Drives - Sony Optiarc Black 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-R 24X CD-RW 24X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA Slim Combo - CD / DVD Burners

I would assume an Atom would be sufficient.

Answer:Hosting a website at your house. Good/Bad idea? Hardware questions as well.

really to host a website it isn't difficult at all, grab a good copy of ubuntu server edition and apache. the only thing that really limits you is bandwidth. Also if you don't plan on getting many hits then hardware is a minimum. The atom processor would do just fine in that case, but if you ever got a lot more traffic then it might become a problem.

I used to host a website from my house on a modded xbox...worked fantastically.

I recently got terraria and i want to play the multiplayer without having to use a public server. I want to use my two laptops to play terraria together on a private server.

The laptops are both using the same Smc Network router and Time Warner Cable connection. I have tried Hamachi using the ip address that the app gives me, i have forwarded my ports( the IPv4 , the IP that "" gave me and even my default gateway). I have used the ports 7777 and 31337 and i have even spent over 3 hours on the phone with SMC networks chat agents trying their best to help but the thing is.. I CANT CONNECT.

When i use one laptop and two instances of Terraria, i can log onto my own game. When i log onto a public server with both laptops, I can see both characters. But if i create a server, whether with or without hamachi, I cannot sign into my own server. With hamchi i use the IP at the top of my host PC's hamachi app bar, ive tried the other way around too. when i dont use hamachi i use every damn IP i can find and none work..

What am i doing wrong????

Answer:Terraria Server hosting Problem

Oh and another thing. The Chat agent also helped me put it in DMZ and yet it still did not work

Answer:how can i have a .exe application running in a HOSTING SERVER?

Do you mean, 'How can I run this Appl on SOMEONE ELSE'S server 24/7?'

Well, you have to get the permission of the server owner/Operator, and arrange to upload the code to them. They'll manage the Appl from their end.

Hello! I recently purchased my self a VPN server as I didnt want to pay the ridiculous price of dedicated servers for my gaming server. Its been hard for me because I know hardly anything about VPN servers.

Im trying to host a server for a game called starmade. So I took the files for the server from my game and transferd them to my server via FTP. I then used Putty to access my server and I told the server to run the that should launch the server. (Server runs on CentOS64)

I set the files to CHMOD 777 and everything. However when I tell the server to open the SH file I get this error. And then it terminates the program.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at java.lang.VMClassLoader.defineClass(
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(
I was thinking that it could be that the Java on the computer I downloaded and ran the files with is 1.7 and the Java on my server is 1.5. I dont know how to update it any further because when I tell it to update it says 1.5 is the most up to date version. Any ideas? Im sorry if this isnt enough information I dont really understand what Im doing.

i do seo and other work for a number of companies. i am having a major problem with a company i am trying to move a domain's hosting to. my client has their own mx server. their web site is currently hosted by Qwest. the name servers at Qwest point the emails to the mx server in the client's office. i purchased the hosting at the new host company. i sent them the correct mx record so that when the time came as the new dns propagated there would be no problems. BUT ever since they entered the domain into their name servers email originating in their system or forwarded from their system to the clients domain have vanished. not a single one has gone through. they say i have to point the dns to them for emails to go through. they also say that their mil is hosted opff site and doesnt go through their name servers. am i wrong that what they are saying makes zero sense? if their mail is hosted off site and goes through the qwest name servers why is there suddenly a problem that didnt exist ever before? beforee we arranged hosting emails originating inside them or forwarding throiugh them got to the client's mx server. why would that suddenly change???
Thanks up front to anyone and everyone that can post back to me about this!!

In college I learned about networks and how they work, however I am COMPLETELY STUMPED at how to host my web site on Exchange 2003. Is anybody willing to help?? After I get it dialed in, I may even offer a little paypal. I currently have a small computer company but know very little on the server side. Mostly consumer repairs, services, etc.

I will show my appreciation and look forward to all replies with instructions or email me so we can chat at [email protected].

Exchange is a email server program. You need a webserver program like Apache or your can use Microsoft IIS Web Server.

So, I've been running a localhosted Minecraft server (Hamachi) from my Windows 8 PC for a couple of weeks. Worked fine. I then updated to 8.1. It still worked perfectly....For a week.

One day, I turned on my laptop after it was shut off, tried to loaded up Hamachi, loaded up my server, tried to connect and failed. No connection to my server what so ever.

So I re-Installed Hamachi. Several times actually with no success. Turned my Firewall off, completely. Still, nothing. Tried port-forwarding. But my Modem/Router doesn't support it, according to my ISP. Added Hamachi to my rules in the firewall. Nothing. Added Hamachi to the firewall acceptions, added all the Java programs to the firewall acceptations, ran Hamachi as Admin, made my PC's account Admin, started And stopped the Hamachi engine from the "Services" page on my PC, re-installed Java, re-installed the Minecraft server, system restored to the point where Hamachi was still working. All did nothing.

It is not my ISP's fault because Hamachi and my server seems to work fine on my Desktop (Windows XP), but I can't connect my laptop into the server. Even if I'm in the same network. I even turned off the firewall on the desktop...Nothing.

I feel that it is not Hamachi's fault at all, but the Firewalls since I read that windows 8.1 made changes to the firewall.

After posting this to the Hamachi forum, only 1 person replied telling me to scrap Hamachi and setup a VPN connection.... Read more

Hello everybody,
So gaming community needs to build up new pc for game-server hosting and web page.
I don't know about webpage, guess that shouldn't take too much, but I know about game servers. So, games are as follows: CSS public (24 slots), TF2 public (32 slots), CS 1.6 public (24 slots), and minecraft.
Current pc can't handle the load anymore. Now it's only webpage, one TF2 server (28 slots) and one css (24 slots, but it's almost empty all the time, max 10 players). And TF2 server is lagging as hell. Current pc specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+, 4gigs DDR2 @ 1066MHz.

Now, a couple of admins (me included) built a pcs. And now there's choice between these two:
CPU: i7-2600K
RAM: 16GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
PSU: Corsair TX750

and 2nd pc:
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE (overclocked to 1100T level)

As you can see, we can't decide which cpu will do a better job. I'm on AMD side, 'cause it got +2 cores and happens to be better ar multitasking.
Some other people is on Intel's side, 'cause it's a better cpu overall.

So, question is, which will be better? Intel or AMD? And then, would the best cpu handle one more css public server and tf2 public? We want to build a machine, that can handle a lot of servers before lags.

I'm sorry for my bad english.
Thanks in advance,

Wile I am in the posting mood. Just thought I would ask the question. Is it possible for me to host/and play a call of duty server from my laptop or desktop?
When I was younger I played games like the delta force collection of games. And could just go into the game, click host server. And then gradually people would join my game as they seen it on the lobby.
Is this possible with any of the call of duty games for PC? I assume it needs some network configuration
If anyone could help me do it I would be really gratefull. I have my Nat port configured to open. But I would like to host a server and have it free for anyone to join

First off, I know this is the "Networking & Security" section, I believe the lag is a correlation to unoptimized NIC settings or something to that extent.
I've been running a Minecraft Server for almost a year. Our player size ranges from 50-100 players on at any time.

Lately I've been seeing with 80+ players, our CPU's gets hit really hard and I'm looking for ways to optimize this (Without recoding it to be multithreaded)

Here's a few specs:

i7 980x (clocked at 3.7ghz)
24GB DDR3 (1600Mhz ram)
Onboard NIC
Debian 5.0 (CLI)
Rampage III Formula
100Mbits connection
Java 7 (but have tried 6 with no change)
Ramdisk (4GB)
Java Flags (

I know this isn't a 'minecraft' support hosting thread - however I believe these issues steam from Network issues. We have an onboard NIC that may be crushing the CPU on the server keeping it at a constant 100%

Here's an mpstats ->
Here's a GC dump ->
Additional Info:
1) Debian 5.0 (CLI)
2) we're runnin 4, 500 TB Black Caviar HDD's in raid 5 (so 1.5tb)
3) Price is not an option for the NIC - we are using the onBoard Rampage III formula - i didn't think it'd fall on its face with what we're using it for =/
4) Debian, we use ipTables - no real use for an antivirus tbh.
5) Again, IPtables - we're behind a switch at the colohost.

Answer:Issues with Hosting... (Minecraft Server)

I used to build/support/run a lot of gaming servers...for big LAN parties..and co-located in data centers. For FPS games...starting with Quake 2, 3, Unreal Tournament versions, Call of Duty, Castle Wolf, Battlefield 1942/Vietnam and variants.

Some questions for you. First...I'm not familiar with Minecraft.

*What operating system is it running? If it's a desktop OS...they start to flatten out as you get above a dozen or twenty concurrent connections. A server is designed to handle many concurrent connections..and it will maintain performance better as more peeps log in.

*Disks? I see RAMdrive..what are you running any disks? High performance high cache ones?

*NIC..yes the NICs make a difference. Any old desktop NIC will do fine for a dozen or twenty users, but when you start getting past that..they'll start to fall on their face. Get a real server grade NIC. Intels rock...get a good server grade Intel. I also used to use 3COM 990svr NICs..a 150 dollar NIC back then..but they rocked!

*Antivirus on it? If you have the game directories in the exclusion list of real time protection?

*Software firewalls..a no-no. heavy traffic..and they bog you down.
*A good hardware firewall? Not a home grade gotta step up to a biz grade that can handle heavy bidirectional throughput with concurrent sessions.

*What is your internet connection to the server? Tested speeds....not ISP "promised up to" ... Read more

Yesterday I was hosting a Minecraft server, and two people other than myself were playing. My system specs are exactly the ones from the "steambox" thread. After about 15min of playing, the entire server crashed along with my system. My computer was hooked-up to my tv via hdmi. The screen went black, and a loud buzzing noise played until I reset my system. This problem persisted even after I reinstalled the server, although, sometimes the screen had white and blue stripes rather than just being black. What is causing this? What can I do to prevent this?

The router that my friends are all conecting through is a 2wire 3801HGV

Has anyone had trouble setting up a dedicated server using the Westell Ultraline Series3 9100 EM router?

I have the manual on the router here..

its 210 pages, I'm skimming over it but I'm trying not to get too deep into it.

Right now, the Coax goes into the router, the router feeds the network. I'm attempting to use Computer 1 on the network to host a dedicated game (CS/Minecraft etc) but I'm unable to have anyone see me even with the correct ports open.

If anyone has any advice, I'll be very welcome to hearing it

Answer:Hosting a Dedicated Server on FIOS?

I've had that router before and it works perfectly fine as long as the ports are forwarded CORRECTLY.

Post a pic of the port forwarding list as well as the detailed view. BTW some games may require multiple ports to be forwarded.

hi guys,

not really sure where to post this...just need some general advice

i have an old dell poweredge server running server 2008 r2 it has 4GB RAM, it was our old office server, but we upgraded and are now using the old server for a project involving water. It is currently set up and has factory software on which takes water readings from various sites around the country using modems...people can then login to the system and monitor their water.

the plan was to build and implement the system and then put it into the cloud. But after speaking to many companies i discovered that cloud hosting is not that cheap...the cheapest i could find was about 450 euro per month.

so im looking at buying a new server and hosting it myself.

the old server is working ok, but it is very sluggish and might not last that long
so i want to buy a new server and transfer it onto the new server.

im also looking at getting a 30mb cable connection for the server.
now i know you dont have info on the type of service or software i am using, all i want to know is what type of broadband would be required for a web page with +- 50 people logging in at a time to view statistics from our software.

Would i be wasting my time, or is there another way to do this that might not require virtual hosting?
any info you may have could help

Anyone know of any good "guides for dummies". I also ran acrross this (Host a Website - IIS7.5[2]=Networking%20Internet) and said that I would need to "register a DNS Host from here for free". So would I still need to do this?

Morning All:

There has a been a question that has been bothering me for some time. I spoke with some fellow IT personnale about it and while I heard the phrase once I cannot for the life of me recall what it is.

So here goes a description:

You build a Server and you give this server (physically take it) to a local building and said local building organization will put your server into a rack, hook the internet up and for a monthly fee allow your server access to the internet, daily/monthly backups etc etc.

Obviously my attempts to search such phrases as: Server Hosting, Dedicated Hosting etc etc result in renting pre-made servers in some remote location that I will never see.

If anyone has any clue as to what I am talking about, a link, or a suggestion that'd be greatly appreciated. This has been racking my brain for quite some time.

Thanks mates.

Hello. To start off I have Windows XP and I can JOIN a halo game very easily and every time but people can't connect to me.. I know that people are unable to connect rather than choosing not to because I've had friends try to connect to me.. I have fast enough internet with cable (368k upload or something) and I've port forwarded ports 2302 and 2303 for udp and tcp and also tried using dmz.. I have a static IP address (which is . . . I am using a Linksys WRT54G with a 54 mb wireless connection. I have tried disabling the firewall which I'm using (Default Windows Firewall) . . . I have also unchecked the box which says Block Anonymous Internet Requests... Lastly, I don't think my server IP address on Halo should be (with port 2302) but it is and I don't know how to change it... Can anyone help me with this? I've tried everything but I really dont know on this one.. Any help is GREATLY appreciated..

P.S. I used to have dsl with a different router and on a cord connection rather than wireless internet.. I have also reformatted my computer since then so the settings may have been changed.. Sorry for long post!!

I used to be able to host a teamspeak and game server fine at my previous home and my brother would be able to join my teamspeak and game server. At that house I used cable and was behind a router, all ports and firewalls configured correctly. Things worked fine.

Now, ever since moving to a new home, my brother can't join both my teamspeak and game server. I am on dsl and my isp is verizon. I am behind a router, but I know I have the ports and ip addresses set correctly. I don't think it could by my brothers connection because he has never changed his local network. My brother is connected directly to his cable modem. I called verizon and they don't have any blocks on there end.

I am clueless on how to fix this. Any ideas? Give me anything to try.

Answer:Hosting game and teamspeak server problem.

Do you have your modem set as a pass through, an ethernet bridge? Many DSL modems act as routers themselves, and this causes connection problems.

Google you modem's model and "ethernet bridge" or "bridge mode".

IP Address using Synology DDNS:

Answer:Hosting Email Server on Synology (Issues)

On Namecheap, you have the correct buttons, but at the bottom of the page there in the SS, for hostname put in "@" and in the mailserver hostname put in "". Now create a A record for "mail" that points to your IP.

On the Synology, put in "" for the domain name. Set 10MB for the max size (can go higher if you want, 10 is pretty standard.) You shouldn't need SMTP Relay.

Do you have a static IP? If you don't good luck getting it to work properly.

Can somebody tell me the easiest way to make some files available for clients to download online from my own system so that I don't need to always upload the files to some other hosting service? I'm in a photo related business and often find myself uploading files to Picasa online or larger slideshow files to MediaFire. For example, when the client needs their images fast and can't wait for a CD in snail-mail. My upload speeds are not that great.

I've seen some devices online called NAS Media Servers from Buffalo and others. Are these enough for hosting or do I need a more advanced server setup? My website itself is currently hosted with HostGator and will stay that way, but I don't want to always need to upload files for clients if i can just host them here easily. I just want to avoid spending a bunch of time uploading files every once in a while. Any thoughts that lead me in the right direction would be appreciated. If you can just start me off, i'm fairly computer savvy and should be able to figure it out. Thank you very much!

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out,

Answer:Windows Server 2003 Website Hosting

you need to register a domain name with a site (i.e. then you need to point your domian names "A Record" at your server ip adress (your internet ip adress, if you don't know it then should help), if you are using a router / firewall / proxy you will need to allow inbound and outbound trafic on port 80 (http) (or any other port you are using if not 80)

not sure if that makes sence :S

Ive recently begun having this issue where my friend and I will host a personal server/game and we cannot connect to each other regardless of who hosts. Other people can connect to our personal game/servers just fine. But I cant join his or he cant join mine. I have tried port forwarding, Hamachi, Game Ranger, Tunggle... and we still cannot manage to join a game with one another. This is what has been happening. I host the game/server . He connects via my public IP. He joins but then disconnects a few seconds after. This happens to him as well. But if he or I host a game and invite someone else. they can join just fine. We just cant join in a self hosted game/server that that either one of us hosts.

We can play multiplayer games just fine as long as we are not I guess you can say hosting it personally?? But if its hosted by someone else it we can be in a same game. for example we can play battlefield 4 together because were playing on someone else's server. Or at least that s what i think.

I just dont understand whats going on. I havent changed anything that i know of in my router settings. besides port forwarding and i doubt my friend has either. It just recently started happening.

other details
Internet- Time warner
Connection- cable modem/router combo. Direct connection to modem.
Modem model- technicolor TC8715D
firewall/anitvirus- windows firewall/none

Hi, I recently tried turning the family computer into a dedicated counter-strike: source server. However, when I host a server other people are unable to connect to it. When I use the same computer that's hosting it and connect to the ip address everything seems to be fine. After looking on-line it seemed that I had to open up specific ports on my router. So following what it said, I opened up port 27015 (starting port: 27015 ending port: 27015) for the ip address that I am using for the server. The same thing still happens. In the directions it said that I should open the port for both udp and tcp however there were no options for that. Also it said that I should use a static ip address. When I do that I am strangley unable to search the internet but am able to play counter-strike fine. Why is that, is it because if I choose a static ip address I have to enable all the ports for internet explorer ect. manually? I've tried hosting the server with a static ip address and without and nothing seems to work. I am assuming that there are still some options on my router that I need to change, any help would be much appriciated. My router model is a wgr614 netgear router. I would probably just go into my router settings and play around with them till it worked, but my mom is paranoid and I have to know exactly what I am doing before I even attempt it. It took me like 2 weeks just to convince heer to let me change the settings at all.

Thanks in advance!!!

i need to put at least 8GB ram because as i said im doing LIGHT server hosting for just me and my friends. ill install linux

Answer:looking for good cheep Mini PC for (Private) game server hosting

It does not look that you could add any RAM. It is really a very low end entry PC. I would look for something more traditional. Look into the Sunday ads. Sometimes they have good deals. Here are a couple starting at $150.

I have a couple Windows 2000 servers hosting some web services and mail list servers and email server software. They are directly connected to a Cisco 800 series router with simple NAT but I have had terrible luck keeping them really secure. I have used CA Antivirus for a couple years and Zone Alarm but now Zone Alarm has stopped working well with the 2000 server (it crashes all the time and the True Vector service will not run properly) and I am wondering what the best idea for a decent software firewall and antivirus might be to protect these servers. I dont have a ton of $ for these things either. The servers have seperate external IP addresses as well.

Hey experts,

I have a customer that is moving from a decentralized (netbook for each user, connecting over VPN) to a centralized Terminal Services approach (using Surface tablets to access a 2003 RDP server) for all of his sales staff.

There will be about 13-16 users who will be ditching netbooks and desktop PCs in exchange for exclusively connecting to their work desktops over 2003 RDP sessions from Surface tablets (and other Windows PCs).

They have two offices. The server will be at one location where about 75% of the users are housed, and the second location will be setup over point to point VPN to transmit traffic for pertinent needs. Their phone system (PBX for one location, with VOIP being used at the other office) is housed at one location with phone traffic being passed over a point to point to the other office.

The users who will be RDP'ing into the server will be using Office (Word/Excel) and 1-2 users may be using Quickbooks Enterprise as well. Internet browsing will also be likely done on a smaller scale.

I have not done such a large scale RDP setup for an office, and am curious about the following:

* What kind of cable internet connection would you recommend for each location? We are pretty much locked into going with Comcast Cable for this, and our choices are either 16/3, 27/7, 50/10, or 100/10. (Note: First number is down speed, second is up speed).

* The server we are planning on loading RDP services onto is a Dell Poweredge 2900 wit... Read more

Your disk I/O will hurt you more than that CPU but if they are going to be doing web browsing or outlook on it...have fun lol.

Also I'd pull a faster chip off ebay like an E5462 which is 2.8 vs the 2ghz yours currently has (I checked and they are $30 ea right now).

Assuming you've got a perc5/i in there like other 2900s I've worked on, I'd get a few 300GB 10k SAS disks and RAID10 them.

I have started searching around for the correct docs on how to do this but haven't had much luck finding one that addresses what I'm trying to do.

I have an existing Windows 2000 server and am going to replace it with a server running Windows 2003 Server R2.

I would like to know the best way of doing that. Most of the docs I have seem talk about it as though you're keeping the same server hardware in place. That's not what I'm trying to do.

So, you don't have to go through all the steps I need to do. If you could just point me to the correct doc and give some helpful hints I would appreciate it.

I have a client with a web server running Windows 2000 Professional. They also have a server on the network running NT 4. They have been told that there is a device that will route requests to the NT server if the 2000 server is down that costs about $100. I have not heard of such an animal, and if anybody can shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it. The device should somehow, I suppose, automatically detect that the machine at IP address A is not responding, and route the web request to IP address B. Anybody?

Admins please feel free to censor, move or remove if necessary.
I feel this needs to be broght to the attention of our malware alert community. Today I discovered that my windows deluxe hosting account with Godaddy was hacked on 11-17-14. The hack was basically a full access to my directories including all my sub folder directories that are alias to my other sites I host. Every directory and subdirectory that contained HTM or HTML files was modified with a footer hyperlink Data. What makes this even more interesting is that I am not alone. Doing some of my own Legwork being a former Network Admin I realized by keyword google search that there are numerous perhaps hundreds if not more domain names that reside on Godaddy Servers that are also hacked with the exact same circumstance that I am in. So I would assume that there is a common issue and quite possibly a breach on godaddy's side. I have yet to see if there are common setups such as wordpress, joomla or other scripts that have the potential to be a way for an attack like this to happen. However I removed all of my joomla based hosting due other unrelated issues and moved them to my linux hosting servers. All I have left on my windows hosting is some old custom asp scripting and some custom PHP scripts that I wrote. Its possible that these could be a path of compromise but I have a hunch that this hack was done from another direction. He... I did call tech support. They are looking into this. THey feel that this was most likly a FTP hack. It certainlty possible. But what concerns me is that if this was a FTP hack then wouldnt other hosting sites be affected? So far all the sites with this inflated HTML hyperlink data are all coming up as Godaddy Hosting IPS's Even more interesting is that they are all so far the IIS7 Servers (by using mydnstools).
So FTP hacking???? Perhaps...... but am I the only one to think that this is a possible breach?

Cracker tries to scan ports to find out which of them are open.Because the administrator of computer can enter the hacker's Internetprotocol (IP) address into the suspect list, that is why cracker'sfind , it is wise to conduct scanning from computer other than hisown. To this end, crackers set up Web sites on free servers (Free WebHosting providers) that allow them to use PHP and PERL scripts. FreeServers (Free Web Hosting Providers) usually do not require personaldata to be provided during the registration, but even if they do,cracker can simply supply and made up data because no one is going tocheck them.

okay, the budget is about 1500 Euro.
this thing will be doing the following:

- Webserver
- Gameserver (think BF: Vietnam and the llike with 24 player max orso)

what would be the best setup for this thing?
keep in mind it has to be one pc as we're not allowed to have more than one pc running as a server on the Business ADSL we've got.

Answer:Server, what hardware?

addendum: HDD's are all accounted for so we don't need those, nor do we need floppy drives or cd-rom drivers or a monitor

I'm planning to build a new data server for my small business. Very small businesss. I don't need enterprise capabilities since we only have 5 client PCs in the network. I have a good idea of what I want in the system... except for the video card. The server won't be used as a workstation at all, so I don't need all of the features that are loaded on video cards that are found in every tech shop. I just want something simple. Can anyone recommend a brand and model?

Also, the following is a list of what I plan to put into the server. If anyone sees any mistakes that I might be making, please steer me in the right direction.

Abit KX7-333 mother board
Athlon XP 1900 CPU
Antec SX635 Mid Tower
350W Power Supply
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
Standard Floppy
CD Writer (brand not yet determined)
3COM 56K Modem
Net Gear NIC
2 UDMA 133 7200 RPM 60 GB HDD
(maybe raid, but I'm not knowledgeable on the set up)
15-inch Monitor
Standard keyboard & mouse
NT 4.0 OS with SP6

I don't need sound of any kind.

Thanks for your time.

Am new and have been wondering for some time how you go about replacing a single processor on a server with a faster processor. Maybe even installing additional processors and upgrading the operating system for multiple processes

Answer:Hardware installation on a server

Good question. What motherboard is it running? That way I can try to find out some info on it.

I'm wondering if all the CPUs have to be identical, or would it run with different speeds... I am leaning toward identical, but I'd like to pull the specs to be sure.

I the server is only running a single processor, period, then changing it out would be just like changing a cpu on a PC.

Hi i want to make a server the min requirements is SQL server Standard or Enterprise

RAM 1GB - 2GB, But in most cases 4GB + 30MB for Reporting Services + Analysis Services, 50-60MB for SQL Management Studio & its recommended each user connection takes 24KB

CPU 64Bit Proc Intel Xeon 3.4GHz

HDD Internal for the Min of 500GB

We will need Fibre connection to external storage array, Fibre cards in servers for connection to storage array, UPS & a Rack & the server should be cheap & upgradeable in future.

I'm in need of some suggestions on what type of PC (hardware requirements) would be good to run versions of Windows Server. The PC would not be used for business purposes, purely for learning. All I need is for the PC to run Windows Server and run it without being too slow ie, I want an old PC to run Windows Server not a new one but I dont know what would be sufficient.

So if anyone can provide some suggestions, such as a PIII 700mhz, 256MB RAM etc it would be great.

Thank you.

My knowledge is quite limited but could anyone provide some insight and/or recommendation of the following type of servers (hardware). That is, should we looking to go for the RackMount servers or Blade? To provide some context, were essentially a small team of less than 15 people but looking to expand over the years, we trade daily and have a huge amount of data input. Server hardware is something we do not wish to go cheap (but within reason for a small shop like ours) on given how crucial it is, simply we want something that is effective and wont create any major headaches in the future.

Appreciate any guidance you can give:

Min Requirements (I've been told I have been misquoted - but this what I was told):
- Server is to have 8 or 16 cores (2 to 4 CPUs) using the fastest processor available and 4GB memory.
- Raid 1 with 2x15k hard drives and Raid 10 (1+0) array are required for log and data either via direct storage or SAN.

Recommendations made to us:

Rackmount: DL360 G7 Model 579240-421 (1 Xeon 5650/6Gb Mem)
Raid 10 of 4x15k 72Gb drives Model 512545-B21

Blade: BL460c G6 Model 595725-B21 (1 Xeon E5650/6Gb Mem) with HP SB40C Blade
Raid 10 of 4x15k 72Gb drives Model 512545-B21

Can anyone refer me to a site that offers guidelines to help me with my research?

I am looking to run SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 server and I need to buy a new server. I have approximately 75 users who will use Exchange and about 5-10 users who will use SQL. I was going to buy a server with dual Xeon processors, 2GB RAM & RAID 5.
I was told that I should not use RAID 5 and that I should use RAID 1.

My question is, why not RAID 5? I checked online and found that RAID 5 is recommeded for email and database servers, so why would I be told not to use RAID 5 and to use RAID 1?

Answer:Server Hardware Requirements?

raid 5 uses multiple drives and it is hot swappable. If 1 drive dies, you can put a new one in and it will rebuild itself. it is fault tolerant. Raid 1 is mirroring. whatever data you have it, is copied to both drives, it is fault tolerant. Generally speaking, you get a lot better performance with raid 5. You could use raid 15 if you wanted, it is a where you mirror your raid 5. i personally would just use raid 5, depending how many disks you get

There are internet appliances that are very expensive that allow you to share a connection. Just get a Cable/DSL router and a switch chained to it if you need more ports.

We're starting to plan a server migration. Mgmt wants us to follow procedures similar to a recovery process, which means they want us to restore a backup. We backup our servers a couple different ways. One is to a online hosted service and another is to tape using Symantec Backup Exec. The catch to this is that we're buying different hardware for the new server. Backup Exec has IDR to cover this; see link below. I wanted to ask if anyone has been through a similar process and if they would share the experience.

Hey Guys and Gals:
I have a Compaq Prolaint ML370 server that does not want to turn on.
Seriously: YES! The power cable is connected and yes I press the Button!
The Leds on the mother board and Raid card are on but when I press the power button nothing goes on not even the main fan on the tower.
The interesting thing is that the power leds on the power connectors are off, but the server seems to be getting power.
Another crazy thing is that there are three small leds lights in the middle of the motherboard and when they go on everything seems to start going, but then they just turn off and the system does not turn on.
It seems like the system is not holding on to the power charge.
I have checked all the cabling and everything seems to be on least I thing they are...
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful...thanks a million!

Well my boss has decided to go crazy and has tasked me with trying to buy server hardware for a new Citrix farm he wants to implement.

The problem is the talks I have had with Citrix people I can't get ANY kind of help as far as number of users per server CPU, RAM requirements and things of that nature, this is making it difficult to tell my boss the hardware we should get.

I already know we want Raid 5 and a fair amount of storage (as citrix has to have the applications images loaded onto the server correct?), will multi processor help the number of users that can connect?

With this in mind and knowing we only use standard applications I.E. windows XP pro, Office 2003, and fery few other applications does anyone have a clue what type of servers I should be looking at? I.E. RAM requirements and CPU speed.

Is CPU speed directly proportional to the number of users who can connect to any given server? I know we are going to have some kind of load balencing solution for failover but I wanted to get some ideas on what to prep for.
