Low, erratic FPS

Question: Low, erratic FPS

Hi guys. Have posted here previously about hardware - i was building a new PC. I'm having some problems running WoW on it though. I have posted on the WoW support forums, but as is the standard process, they've asked me for my driver info and then ignored me. So I've come here!

Yesterday evening, I started having some strange stuttering slowdown. Every 2-5 seconds, I'll get a bit of slowdown for half a second, then I'm back running smooth again.

Previously, Warcraft would run at 60 FPS at (almost) all times, in busy cities, in raids, whatever. But after a few hours of playing yesterday, I suddenly started experiencing these low framerate spikes. It runs smooth for a few seconds, then it stutters, and then smooth, then a stutter.

I have tried:
Running with 0 addons (in-game custom UI stuff),
Fullscreen and windowed,
Lowest graphics settings,
Spyware scan (which brought up quite a lot actually - but it's clean now),
Virus scan,
Defrag (fairly new drive, so i'm at 0% fragmented, it says),
Allowing the launcher to fully patch (it now says up to date - there's a sort of streaming patch process),
Closing all processes and switching off fancy Win7 themes (my tray has my graphics utility, sound utility, mobo utility, and Microsoft's AV - nothing else).
Updating graphics drivers.

It's particularly noticeable if I try and run around somewhere quite complex, like the cities or forests. Then it's a pretty constant 10-20 FPS (where before I could sustain at least 30 FPS with ease). But even in a plain zone, if I zoom in and look at the floor in the corner of a room, so i can barely see anything - the spikes become very noticeable indeed.

I've noticed some other performance issues. Scrolling down some content-heavy webpages is far from smooth. Even right-clicking spelling errors in this post causes the right-click menu to stutter open rather than fade in smoothly. But i honestly cannot remember if it was doing that beforehand.

So anyway: It sounds like a very specific problem to me, this erratic stuttering (as opposed to a constant slowdown). Any ideas on what is causing it?

Edit: With WoW closed, my browser slowdown is gone. I've also just tried Bioshock, and it runs as smooth as a bebbeh's botteh.

Preferred Solution: Low, erratic FPS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Low, erratic FPS

What are you full system specs? I assume its not the machine in your profile as thats says you are running Win XP and you mention in your post about turning off Win 7 effects?

If you aren't sure about your system info use the link below, if you are please post as much information as possible.

Question: Erratic DVD

I am having problems with DVD/Video. I edit files into a full movie - approximately 5 mins long. I drop in an audio file to use as background music and everything proceeds as it should. I then get the message that everything has saved as it should. When I try to play it back it starts ok and then starts to "stutter" and drop out. The same thing happens when you burn a DVD and play it on an external DVD player?
Anyone out there know why ?????

Question: Erratic fan

I've just purchased a nearly new ProBook 430 G3. Everything is working fine except the fan is behaving erratically. While idle the fan is off as expected, during intensive tasks the fan runs at full speed, again as expected. However while browsing the web, using Visual Studio etc the fan starts running but doesn't keep a constant speed. It constantly speeds up and slows down, its subtle  but noticeable. I've used lots of laptops over the years and never seen this behaviour before. All the latest drivers have been installed along with the most recent BIOS. Anyone know if all 430's do this or is mine faulty? Thanks

Hi, I have been having problems with the touchpad on my laptop. It seems far too oversensitve and is forever dragging things across the screen and the slightest touch selects something or closes something. It in fact is pretty unusable. I have tried updating the drivers and reinstalled the old one. I have also tried the Elan settings page and no matter what I select on there it makes no difference. For instance I turn off the tapping and dragging and dropping options yet that makes no difference. It is almost like the Elan settings are not working or are unconnected to the touchpad itself. The problem is so bad that I am having to use a plug in mouse, which works but is not what I want to do. I bought this laptop because it was so portable and the last thing I want to do is carry around a lot of other stuff. I have tried everything I know and have ran our of options. If someone could offer some advice, or there are others who are having or have had similar problems, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

Question: Erratic & Slow

Once again, performance is flat and activity is erratic. BitDefender, RegistryMechanic and Spybot S&D only find cookies and lost reg entries. etc.- no threats at all really.  Mouse pad jumps and moves erractically and often magnifies screen or reduces it to a small size such that neither screen can be read.  Curror jumps all over the place when typing.   Customer Support Techs have attempted to fix - I forgot trouble ticket number - by me allowing them access to my computer but in both instances the two different techs were unable to make a permanent fix.   The mouse pad is still extremely sensitive and cursor  jumps erractically around the screen.  The mouse pad is so useless that a wireless or USB mouse must be plugged in.     In my 50 plus years of computer purchase/use of both Mac and PCs, I would not recommend this model computer to anyone considering a laptop.  Bummer.

Question: erratic mouse

actually a trackball, Microsoft Explorer 1.0 that is. Running on Win2k, SP4, Dell Precision 360 PC, usb converted to PS2 connection.

I have gone thru the Spyware Trojan Removal process at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 thru step 4. HAve not completed Step 5, did run Hijack This and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Ran Bitdefender, ADS Spy, adn maybe another from the list after Step 6. No issues. Windows Update has been run, but am wary of removing MS Java since a work product definitely uses JAVA and I don't want to break it.

Problem is: the mouse (trackball), at times, jerks around, even gets stuck in a spot, but then eventually recovers. Acts as if something is so taking up the CPU time that there's no extra for the mouse to use/move.

I had this problem a few months ago and was sure I had some nasty infection, so I used it as a motivator to rebuild the system from scratch (SW). Even wiped the boot sector (cause a rebuild w/out that step had the same problem show up). WOrked for a while, and now, it's baa-ack.

A regular mouse, Dell/Microsoft Intellimouse 1.3A works fine. THe previous iteration of this problem had the regular mouse also going to erratic behavior eventually.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse driver. Same w/video (nvidia) driver (since the mouse started acting funky after an upgrade to the video driver - I think but am not 100% positive).

SafeMode w/network produced same proble... Read more

All of a sudden, the cursor is acting erratically, jumping all over the screen, shaking the screen, enlarging the screen. No external mouse installed, not accidentially touching the touch pad, just sitting here watching the erratic behavior. Getting worse by the hour. Have read that it could be driver updates conflicting, could be electro magntic issue.  Any ideas? Laptop can't be used now.

Question: Erratic behaviour

Hello guys. I think I might have a problem. About 2 days ago I started getting errors about different Windows services not working (can't remember exactly which, but if needed I can dig up the logs). After I got these, I also got a series of BSOD's. I managed to restore my laptop to a previous checkpoint via System Restore, as Windows downloaded some updates and I thought these were the cause. I also did a check disk and a defragmention of my drives, together with a Spybot and NOD32 scan. Cleaned what I found, and I thought that was that. After all of that, I started getting warnings from NOD32 of attacks, coming in from the C:\Windows\TEMP folder, all blocked. They were about 25 threats in the last 24 hours or so, and before all of this happened, I never got any.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question: Erratic cursor

I have read several threads with this problem, cursor or pointer moving around screen erratically and difficult to manoevre accurately, and have tried the suggested remedies to my ability: but my problem is slightly different in that it happens on my laptop, but only when using it on a flat surface, never when it is on my lap.
I use the touch pad, not a USB mouse.
Any suggestions, or have I got a laptop that takes it's title too seriously !

Answer:Erratic cursor

Has the Touch pad ever been Scrached or pressed Heavily? This can Damdge the Sensor Causing the Curso to Jump on the Screen,

Do you have a USB Mouse you could use that may be lying around? If so try that if it works fine then it would be your Touch Pad being your Issue

Question: erratic touchpad..

Just recently my touchpad has been acting strange...
It does not move in the linear direction and constant speed which was normal until now...
Now I have to use the touchpad several times to move it across or up and down and the speed changes-usually slower-the there seems to be less control over its regular motion.
I have checked the settings on the Control Panel but they have remained the same.

Probably a driver. Pleased go into device manager>pointer devices. Make sure the driver is listed and working properly

Please go to start>search>type device manager.
Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.

Question: Erratic mouse

I installed Windows 10 on day one or two of the upgrade and have been using it since on my Toshiba 64 bit laptop. It was an upgrade from 8.1. A note that this laptop is a touch screen that I cracked, disabling the touch function a year or so ago. No problems on Windows 8.

I use Chrome as my browser and initially could not open any tabs on Chrome. That quickly resolved with some uninstalls and reinstalls I think, but no longer an issue.

From the beginning however I've had problems with what I call "erratic mouse". I've been looking but have not seen others id this as a problem. It was a frequent problem in the beginning but seems to be resolving, maybe?

It is an all of a sudden problem. The mouse will not stay where it is. It jumps to the top of the screen and starts clicking on other tabs or, seems to right click on the url setting up boundaries with big tear drops then bringing up cut and paste windows. Difficult to explain what is going on. This has happened on many occasions. The mouse continues these activities (on it's own). The more I try to interfere, the worse it gets. If I walk away and leave it for a while, it might slow down enough so I can direct the PC, via the mouse to a restart. Usually I just unplug to restart. Seems to be running a day or two now before this problem starts.

I just happened again. I pressed and held the "Windows Button" on the PC and the problem resolved.

It's now 8/16. Occurrences seem to be diminishi... Read more

Answer:Erratic mouse

I'm replying to my own post to update it and to document for later reference what is going on. Since I've had no replies on my original post, I assume this is an original problem.

On 8/18, the "erratic mouse" happened again on a couple of occasions. I can confirm that the "Windows Button" does NOT resolve the problems as I originally thought, I needed to unplug the laptop to reboot it a couple of times. I also think I can cause the problem to repeat. When I shut the lid to put the laptop to sleep, the failure occurs within a couple of minutes of bringing awake. I was able to repeat it 3X already.

Trying to explain the erratic mouse a little better .... as I said earlier, the mouse starts doing it's own thing. Many time it "brackets" a section of text in the URL on a web page with what I will call "bubble sliders". They look like bubble type markers with points on the top that delineate a section of text to copy or cut. After the delineation occurs, a small rectangular box appears with grids containing copy, cut and paste sections to click. I have never seen anything like it in any application or app. Other things and clicks occur also, just cannot get control of the machine back needing to power down.

I also looked in the event log log for items around the time of failure and am seeing nothing giving me any clues.

Question: Erratic Mouse

I'm not sure what kind of issue this may be. I have tried replacing my mouse Marble Logitech with a new wireless Logitech one but the issue is still there.
While playing games on facebook the mouse pointer has shifted(you have to move the pointer around to slightly below or slightly to the side to click what you want-Some games I cannot even open because of this -Its also hard to close game windows since the "X" doesn't work where it should you have to move the mouse around and find the area that works to close it.I am using windowx XP and google Chrome as my browser.
Yesterday I posted on Major Geeks Facebook page and they told me this "Get SlimDrivers from our driver section and update your drivers. Odds are the USB drivers are out of date compared to the mice you are using." I did download it and it said the drivers was out of date I fixed it and rebooted and the issue remains .I posted on the wall 2x's but noone seems to be answering so I came here.
Hope you can guide me in the right direction

Answer:Erratic Mouse

HI

What Windows Service Pack is your XP at?
What is the exact model of your Logitech mouse? (generally the wireless mice form Logitech are called Wireless Mouse Mxxx where xxx is the model number)
Are you using a Desktop, Laptop, Netbook?

Have you uninstalled any software or driver that was installed for your old mouse? what I would do is uninstall all software and drivers linked to the mice and then reboot and install the latest mouse's drivers.

Reason I ask about laptop/netbook is maybe disable the touchpad.

What surface are you using the mouse on, try a different surface to what you are using now, different mouse mat, or a dull none shiny surface.

Question: Erratic Mouse!!!

For two days now, the Trust Optical Wireless Mouse that I use has been playing up (I have an Acer Aspire 5105 laptop, and generally use this mouse rather than the built-in touchpad). This 'misbehaviour' seems to be limited to those occasions when I'm using Windows components, such as regedit, msconfig etc, and have to choose options from drop-down menus; I scroll down, release the mouse and the menu returns to the beginning, as if there were a spring there. Same thing when I use the bottom scroll bar; if I drag the bar towards the right with the mouse, when I let go of the mouse, the scroll bar returns to the left. I end up having to use the keyboard arrows or the touchpad to choose menu options. The only real change to my pc, apart from the usual Microsoft updates, has been the removal of Comodo Firewall and AVG antispy ware.Florio

Question: Keyboard Erratic

I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100 with Vista-32 OS pre-installed. When typing any text in any program, my cursor will randomly reposition itself.  Is there a fix to this?  I have even reinstalled the OS with MS OEM DVD.  I still have the same problem.Mark

Answer:Keyboard Erratic

I had the same problem with my G530, and it was maddening. Turned out that I was accidentally brushing the touchpad with the palm of my hand at times while typing, and this would cause the cursor to jump to a different location. (even though I could swear I wasn't hitting the touchpad when it happened, I must have been) There is a setting in the touchpad configuration to disable the "tap to click" feature while typing. And you can also set the delay interval for when it reactivates after you quit typing. This solved my jumping cursor problem. Try it on yours.

Mouse movement is erratic and jumpy, often times skipping to the sides of the screen in arbitrary directions. When not jumping around, the mouse moves normally and controllably.

From what I have researched from Microsoft Support and Help site that there have been issues with optical mouses not functioning properly in Windows Vista. You can refer to the Microsoft support article at this url:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932653/en-us

They do have a hotfix for it, but you have to submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix at:

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6294451.

Hope this helps!

Question: Erratic Mouse Pad?

Every now and then my mouse pad begins clicking erratically when just trying to move the mouse elsewhere on the screen.Perhaps it's due to sweaty fingers or what not, but I've tried changing the mouse's pressure sensitivity and found it to not really solve the problem. To diagnose the problem, I've simply just shut down the laptop and turned it back on and wiped off my fingers. However, why is this a problem to begin with? Is it because oils from the skin are left on the pad and causing deviations in pressure when I have my finger on it?Thanks

Answer:Erratic Mouse Pad?

Can't help you, no issues with my Y510.

Hey guys,

Ive recently encountered a strange problem on my laptop, but what it is i cant describe properly. I start up my computer, and ill find things like my mouse going on right click uncontrollably and my desktop icons and toolbar is frozen. This sort of stops after i exit from windows live messenger 9. But afterwards my mouse seems to spring into a life of its own, uncontrollably flashing with the right click option.

All this happened after i 'blue screen of death'ed once and received a virus link from one of my msn contacts which i DID NOT open.

Malwarebytes scan and AVG 8.5 showed no infections. Im not going to attempt ComboFix just yet

Please help, thanks in advance

Answer:Erratic Behaviour....

Did a norton scan,

I found something fishy...

NewVirusRemoval.vbs
hide_evr2.sys

Norton didnt pick them up as threats, but i did since it lagged on scanning those files.

cant remove them from my Windows folder, even though i can see all hidden folders

Apparently this is something called Ursnif?

Can people please help out?

I've been going nuts with the Elan driven touchpad since I got this machine in Dec 2014. I've trouble shot the problem down to the Elan software being slowed down/interrupted when trying to use the mouse. The diagnosis is repeatable. If something is running using the CPU moderately at normal priority and the Elan software is also running at normal priority the touchpad becomes totally erratic. If under the same cpu conditions I plug in a wireless usb moue no problems, hardware driven. If I bump the Elan software to a high priority and start a moderate cpu process the touchpad work fine. My question is - is the a way to make the touchpad a hardware driven device rather than Elan software driven.

Question: Erratic behavior

The last few days the computer has been very erratic. I'll try to explain what is happening but am not sure I will be able to adequately explain it.

First, and I don?t know this has anything to do with my problems, but every time I reboot the computer I get the following message or warning ? GarminLifetime.exe-.NET Framework Initialization error, and then goes on with other info. If I click OK it closes, so don?t know this has anything to do with the other problems I have been experiencing.

I burn DVDs all the time without any problems. A couple of days ago I was authoring a DVD and part way through the output received an error message stating the system was low on resources even though the only thing running was Outlook Express. There is 350 GB free on the hard drive and I have 4 GB of RAM. I rebooted the computer and didn?t start anything else, just the DVD authoring program however got the same error message.

Most of the time when I click on a link in an e-mail the IE window opens but it just sits there with the hour glass and the webpage never appears. If you try to close the window it won?t close. You have to use task manager to end the task. When you try to open a new IE window sometimes it goes to the home page, other times it just seems to hang and again you can?t close the window without using task manager.

The system seems to bog down with only a few windows open when in the past I have had two or three times as many windows open.

When I ran GMER the first... Read more

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:... Read more

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi
Ive just joined this forum and would welcome some help please.
My mouse jumps all over the screen, opens up programmes and drop down boxes on the desktop without me even touchin it, sometimes the pointer disappears totally. I can sometimes cure this by ctrl/alt/del and then just close the task mgr box, other times I have to reboot. I'm positive this is not a hardware problem, but a virus type thing. I've actually changed the mouse and no difference. I did have the same problem some time ago, got help from another forum, had to run various programmes, including Hijack, posted logs etc and after deleting files as advised, the problem was solved. Unfortunately the person who helped is no longer on that forum, and nobody else seems able to help. I run XP, semperon 3000, 1 gig ram.
Any help gratefully accepted !!!!

Question: Erratic WiFi

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T61 running an Intel 4965AGN. I've had many problems connecting to public WiFi networks, the most recent problem being at an airport lounge. The network was open, unencrypted, and other computers were using it fine. Sometimes Access Connections won't connect at all, most of the time it connects, but won't acquire an IP address (i get the first green check, and the second is a red X). I don't think its software, as i've done a full restore (for another reason), and the problem is the same. any help is appreciated, thanks,Al

I just "Cleaned up" (registry repairs, etc.) my R50, and now the mouse cursor does not follow my mouse in real time, but runs all over the place when there is any significant disk activity. Does anybody know of a cure for this? I uppose it is related to the priority of pointer input interrupts vs. HDD interrupts vs. display update interrupts, but I have no idea where to start finding these priority levels, or how to change them. Please help. Kron.

Question: Erratic Cursor

Got an older model DV 4150 HP Laptop with 2 gb of ram and runnning Windows 7 Ultimate. I seem to be having a "wild" cursor problem. I can be typing along and pause and lots of times the cursor will have moved to somewhere else in the sentence or page that I am typing on. Just like now, before this sentence, the cursor moved to about four different places in the first three sentences when I would pause. This is irritating at best. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

PoppyJ

Answer:Erratic Cursor

Are you sure your hand is not touching the touchpad while you are typing? This happens a lot to me if I'm not careful to keep my hands off the touchpad as best I can while typing. If your palm brushes across it, the touchpad mistakes that as input and starts to move the cursor to wherever it thinks you are pointing it to. Your touchpad may have a "Palm Check" setting to help minimize this from happening.

Does this solve your problem, PoppyJ?

Question: Cursor erratic

- portable dell mini inspiron -xp
cant have control- ca n t write
please help is it touchpad or m ouse , materiel or software?

Answer:Cursor erratic

I had a similar problem on my Insipron 1520.

The touchpad becomes erratic and will start clicking by itself. Reinstalling the drivers did not help. You can try this (Device Manager > Mice > Right click and uninstall ... then reboot) and see if it helps. However like I said, it didn't for me.

I confirmed this to be a hardware issue because the same problem would happen when I boot Ubuntu. A temporary fix would be to hibernate the computer for 10 minutes then resume.

Solution: Replace the touchpad. I was able to find one for mine for $20. The documentation on Dell's website explains how to remove and reassemble.

Try searching for your model. Seems to me their Symantic touchpads go bad after about 2 or 3 years, depending on how much use.

Question: Erratic sound

Built-in audio card on my friend's MB behaves oddly.

When you listen to wmv and dvd video, the sound is garbled. When you listen to cd audio or sound on a Powerpoint document, everything is fine.

We installed a brand new PCI sound card and the result is identical.

We re-installed XP and results are identical with built-in sound card and PCI sound card.

We did download k-lite codec pack but there was no improvement at all. Maybe we didn't activate the codecs properly.

Could anybody let us know where we missed out?

I have been using and UPS with my PC without problem for more than 20 years, but for the last few months it has caused eratic behaviour. My current UPS is an APC Back-UPS RS 1500. This gives me a good 22 minutes breathing space when the power is cut according to the countdown on the LED screen. However, as soon as the alarm goes and the UPS seamlessly provides power from its charged battery, the control of my mouse becomes increasingly more erratic and it takes several minutes and much patience, not only to place the cursor over relevant parts of the screen, but also to wait for those places to become active before I can save work and turn off. Only with a reboot does the problem disappear. The UPS is not totally useless, as I can save work, but its usefulness is only a fraction of what it should be. I'm assuming this is hardware related, but if anyone thinks my thread should be moved elsewhere, feel free. Any ideas?

What is causing my keyboard or my cursor, to suddenly jump making typing extremely difficult
I thought it might be my mouse, so I unplugged, and although I was able to type several sentences without issue, when I returned to my email, it started again.

I cannot determine if any on key is the issue. Seems to be very irregular. Oh yeah, and then it sometimes jumps as if I have hit the tab key or the enter key. The problem became much worse as I am typing this

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi.

I've got a mouse problem that has developed independently on two different computers, one Win98, the other Win ME.

The mouse works OK when it is moved slowly, but behaves erratically when moved quickly. For example, if the pointer is in the middle of the screen and the mouse is moved quickly to the left, then the pointer will typically move crazily about in the middle third of the screen and usually end up on the right.

Drivers and mice have both been changed to no effect. The ME computer now has an optical mouse, so it can't be a mechanical problem.

The Win98 mouse is on COM1, the ME mouse is a PS/2.

I've fiddled about endlessly with the port settings on the Win98, changed ports etc. No effect whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Regards,
psmyth

Answer:Erratic mouse

I am not sure this will help, but it is something to look at.

You didn't specify the mouse brand, but usually most come with software to adjust the mouse.

What you want to do is look for the mouse speed and acceleration. Be sure the speed is set to medium...and that acceleration is set to low. It sounds like the acceleration may be set too fast, causing the mouse to act erratically

Hope that is helpful

Before I attempt to reinstall Windows XP Home SP2

I type Exit
It asks me about autochk.exe path
So I tell it the path in system32
It tells me it cannot find it but its there

I try another drive
I get Windows on
After a few minutes whatever internet windows i have on closes down and erratic behavior goes on with XP menu opening and LOG OFF menu
So I check task manager and I use like 3-4 different virus scanners and spyware scanners and nothing is found on any of them

Ive used memory boosters and trying to check my ram and used chkdsk

I have 5 drives I have NTLDR is missing with discs that are legal and mine

Reinstalled Windows after partitioning and formatting them as well
First of all I thought it was the windows updates or internet exploder updates
So the second reinstall i didnt update
The same thing happened

What else could it be and how can i clear this up?

Chkdsk thorough found some bad clusters on 2722 and fixed them
But that didnt eliminate my issue

Question: Erratic CUP Usage

Hello,

My problem began a while back, let me explain. (Note: This is a Sony VAIO Laptop I will be referring to)

First I only noticed it in movie files, where they would become choppy and lag after watching them for awhile. Then I looked in my Windows Task Manager.

For some reason, alot of different programs are starting to take alot of CPU. Normally the movie player of choice will just keep slowly rising in CPU usage until it hits 100% and freezes, but I have had other strange things happen.

For instance, my Pop-Up Stopper Companion would rise from a 04% CPU usage to a 30% CPU usage all while watching a movie file.

And these are files on my computer that I have downloaded as well as DVD's.

At this point I am beggining to believe that it is a memory leak or some other type of problem with the CPU and how its being dished out to all of my programs, because this does not affect just movie files (For some reason Audio happens to play just fine).

But it happens the same when I try to run games on this computer.

I have tried a number of things to fix this already, and I will list some of them.

1. I have run just about every virus and spyware program known to man. I own Spysweeper and I have ran Spybot, Ad-aware, RegSeeker, Bazooka, the list goes on and on.
2. I have tried using different screen resolutions on the advice of a friend, but that didn't work either.
3. Ok, here's an interesting one. I have run RegSeeker to try and help with some Registry errors, ... Read more

Question: internet erratic

Hi again,
Having a little problem while using the net. We are on LAN. While surfing, I can hit the home button, but most of the time it goes to a blank clear page, I can then hit the refresh key and it goes to my Yahoo home page. I have attached a log from Hijack this as you requested the last time I had problems. By the way, everything you suggested worked perfectly. Thanks a bunch for your help. You guys (and gals) are great..

Question: Erratic Connection

Hi Folks - have been having some odd things happening recently on my HP Compaq nx7010. This is a standard build Windows XP machine using Microsoft Office, and we use IE6 to connect.

First thing: My dial-up internet connection is playing up. Doesn't seem to be an issue with my ISP, and their helplines are drawing a blank. I will dial-up and hear the modem conencting, get the connection confirmed and then it immediately disconnects again. This happens repeatedly - now this has happened before and can be due to the ISP, but recently it has been doing more: it will repeatedly disconnect, and then repeatedly re-connect in the background without making any modem dialling noises or without us requesting a connect - even after we have manually disconnected. Eventyually we will get a permanent connection, but then this can disconnect us any time during our session. Any ideas? I have checked to see that there are no rogue autodiallers.

Second thing: Occassionally on boot up the screen resolution and desktop theme is reduced to a very low pixellated version. The only way to fix this is to restart. This has only started happening.

Appreciate any help or sugegstions!

Answer:Erratic Connection

Hi,

This could very well be due (first problem first) to a port sharing problem. Here is what I would do if it were mine:

Why not give the following a try:

1) Download the newest and latest drivers from the modem manufacturer’s website. (I know, you have a disk, but download the newest and best anyhow.

2) Enter Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and DELETE any references to any modem.

3) Shut down and physically remove the modem and then put the modem back in PCI slot #3 (Third slot down from the AGP slot)

4) Boot up and enter the BIOS setup menu.

5) In the BIOS setup menu find the PnP area. If you are running WinXP, then DISABLE Pnp….however, if you are using Win98, then make sure it is ENABLED.

6) Save and Exit

7) Boot back up and when the computer finds your modem, then load the drivers that have been downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It may tell you that the latest and best are already installed, but install them anyway. (for example, WinXP only has v.90 drivers and not the most recent v.92 that are needed for best operation) If it says they are not digitally signed, then load them anyway. This is a long story, but I can assure you it is a money issue and a rip off from Microsoft in my opinion.

This should get you going!

OK,
I'm not a novice, but late last week got a new challenge. Have been using McAfee, recently went to Comcast (ISP) versions which are free, and keep DAT's updated, and run Lavasoft and Spybot about 1ce per week.

Daughter, who doesn't have the best net habits, I'll admit, complained of getting knocked off the net, and couldn't get back in. I tried a few things, but system was bogged down to a crawl. Literally - even shutting down - would try to shut down, and 10 minutes later, still not shut down. Boot-ups changed from being about 3-4 minutes to 5-6 minutes, if successful at all. Tried to run McAfee for a scan, and it would lock. Ditto with Lavasoft, but not Spybot. Spybot reported about 30 tracking cookies, which is not unusual, but cleaned them no issue, nothing worse.

Ran HJT, found SpamBlockerUtility, and removed with HJT, but still lots of problems -
Flashlight icon lockup when going into MyComputer
McAfee lockups
Intermittent ability to get to net at all
Extreme slowness to do anything
All without seeing a lot of HD LED flashing
Task manager Performance tab shows low CPU usage - 4-7% mostly, nothing unusual for mem usage.

Tried some online scans in safe mode, and when I could in normal mode - Kaspersky, NAV, and AVG - show no threats except a few tracking cookies. Downloaded AVG, and have finally run that and McAfee in normal mode, with no virus' noted.

Tried to remove HP All-In-One (7210) software, somewhat successfull, but still r... Read more

For some time now all the d/l's stop and start multiple times. I d/l Firefox .6 this morning and it took over an hour to d/l 4.7MB, which should have taken 20 minutes. It was worse than it's ever been. Installing the updated Firefox didn't help either.

I use LeechGet d/l manager, but installed it after the problem started.

Sending email using oe6 is erratic. The message appears to go out, and it moves from the outbox to the sent box, but it does not go out. It disappears never to be seen again. A copy remains in the sent box, and if I use either the reply or forward function on this copy, it usually gets to the recipient. Occasionally this ploy fails also and I must create a new message. I have taken to putting my address in the bcc line so that I get a copy of mails successfully sent. Receiving is no problem. In about 2-3% of the tries, the mail goes out without a problem. I have reinstalled oe6 and created a new account. I am using xp pro sp3. Any ideas short of going to a new client? Thanks

It's difficult to explain what's going on with my PC right now. I'm fairly sure it's not a virus - I ran the Norton NPE file and it turned up nothing (it's supposed to be a heavy rootkit scanner) and I have AVG Internet Security 2011 - it also shows up nothing on scans, and it generally works pretty solidly for me.

I've got problems with disconnections. It will continue to read 'Connected' yet I cannot browse or use Yahoo! Instant Messenger or Skype, I can't do anything on it. This happens frequently, every ten to thirty minutes, quicker if I'm doing more online, less often if I'm not browsing at all. It's almost like I'm exceeding a bandwidth limitation, but there IS no bandwidth limitation at all, and I'm not going anywhere near any limit that would be set - I'm not doing much at all.

This is extremely frustrating, as I often play games online with my friends and it happens in the middle of that.

I've tried resetting the router. No help. This isn't happening with any other PCs in the house so it's not a service provider problem, and I switched from an onboard Ethernet card to a wireless USB setup - my signal strength reads max, and there were no problems with the internet cable going into the router. None of this is clearing it up. As I typed this out, I literally disconnected with no warning and for no reason. I haven't done anything new, I haven't been browsing any stra... Read more

Question: Erratic re-boots

Can anyone please help?
I bought my daughter & son-in-law a Packard Bell computer package which has win XP operating system. I had it posted to Germany as this is where they are based with the British Forces.
The problem is that the computer has erratic re-boots and we are at a loss as to the reason why.
We have looked into the 'event viewer' in 'My Computer' to see what errors are being reported and this is what it comes up with:
'SOURCE': = 'WSH'
(Does this mean 'windows script host'?)
Can anyone advise us what the problem is and how we might fix it?
Many Thanks.

Question: Erratic Keyboard

A friend is having trouble with his laptop running XP with a wireless broadband connection. When he types on the keyboard random letters/numbers/symbols appear. He has AVG 8.0, Windows Defender and Adaware running. He uses Windows firewall and has seen this come up with 'firewall turned off' when loading although he is not aware of having done anything that may have affected this setting. He has reverted to a previous system restore point and the keyboard works correctly for a while but then reverts to the same behaviour.
No viruses have been found, he also ran WindowsOne Live Care and nothing showed up.
Any help would be welcome as I have run out of ideas.
Also, as he lives some distance away from me I need to use Remote Assistance to help him. Would using Remote Assistance be likely to have any impacton my system if he does have a virus?

Answer:Erratic Keyboard

I think Live One Care has its own firewall, so thats why the Windows XP firewall is turned off.

Doing Remote Assistance will not have any imapct on your system, viruses cannot be spread over a remote assistance session.

Question: Erratic Performace

i've been playing baldur's gate and i'm getting erratic performance during gameplay. was on the phone with game tech support and they say there is something wrong with my system's resources. here are the symptoms:

erratic game speed - sometimes very fast but mostly too slow. i have a 32 meg 3D vid card, 550 MHz PIII, 128 Meg RAM, 40 Speed CD-ROM. according to game support there should be no slow down at all while running the game on my machine.

i run nothing in background, have a defragged disk, have the latest drivers, and have no probs with Direct X. i have noticed lots of hard drive access during gameplay. there also appears to be a large amount of HDD access in the Win 98 environment.

also, there were some sound files from the game that were located in some bad clusters. i used norton disk doctor to move the files to good clusters. moving those files to good clusters did not help.

Choppy Play from the CD-ROM and Skipping Sound - when the game accesses the CD-ROM to play a movie i mostly get choppy vid and the sound skips alot when the game first accesses the disk. but sometimes it is fast and there are no skips.

the game teases me when it runs fast. it is so much more enjoyable to play. but mostly it runs slow and it is becoming frustrating. my guess is that i'm having a HDD problem or sound card problem, any thoughts are appreciated.

Highlighting is not working properly in any programs that I use. Sometimes it will highlight only a portion of the text I select. Sometimes it will not highlight any test. Sometimes it will select all the text and I have trouble deselecting it. Sometimes if I hold the mouse button down for a while it will work. Occasionally (seldom) it will work fine for a moment. I tried to search this issue but could not find anything that seems to help. I cleaned and checked the mouse. I ran the Microsoft Office Diagnostics which did not change anything. I haven't made any recent changes that would account for the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Question: erratic mouse

erratic mouse I have an H-P desktop running W 7 (64) which is a little over a year old. As of today my Microsoft optical mouse has gone all flaky on me. It moves jerkily and if I happen to get it to a place I want it and click, nothing happens. I can't get the Start menu to open. I have
1. changed the batteries
2. changed the USB port
3. unplugged it and installed a wired mouse
4. rebooted
5. hit the reset button on the optical receiver

and nothing has changed. I have read all the previous questions and answers on this topic and I don't know where to go from here. It doesn't seem to me that a new mouse is the answer or the wired mouse should have worked. If it is a software problem, I don't know how to get to anything. I surely would appreciate some help on this.

Question: Scrollbar erratic

I am having a problem with my scrollbar jumping up and down, whether it's on the web or any program I have running. If there is a scroll bar in the window, it will jump up and down or jump all the way to the bottom the the screen and stay there. This will also happen even if I take my hand off the mouse and not touch it for a while. The mouse I am using is what came with the computer. It is not a wireless mouse. It seems that the scroll wheel will seldom work when the screen is jumping. I purchased Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare to try and take care of the problem. I thought it could be a virus or spyware causing this issue but the program has found nothing. I tried sevel freeware programs on the net to detect a virus or spyware also and they found nothing. I purchased adaware also since i heard good things about it, but it has found nothing. I am using a Dimension 2400 with celeron processor and the windows is XP. I tried looking on the web for threads relating to this topic but have found none. Can someone help!?

Hello there, my first post here

Ok let's get on with it.

I have seen this subject on a couple of other threads on other websites, but i haven't figured out a way to salvation yet.

I just bought a new PC...

I get erratic mouse movement and sound is choppy most of the time. At the same time, i noticed that it does that when my drive light (orange) blinks. Looks like it's doing something but it's hard to say. Booting up takes a little too much time i think, installing software also.

That blinking light thing doesn't always happen, but is mostly always triggered by opening or closing a window, software...etc. And when it does, it stays blinking for a good while.

When i watch the drive light, everytime i see it blink (even when idle, it blinks every 2 secs), i get a chop in sound, mouse movement, overall performance.

I remember having the same problem at work a while ago, and the tech guy had made it all better (to my amazement) in very little time and effort. Sadly I can't remember what it was. Maybe just a setting on the HD or a memory thing, i don't know.

I tried installing the video drivers and sound drivers.

Win XP professional 2002 SP2(french version)
Intel Pentium PD CPU 3.20GHz
(Supposedly a PD 945 LGA775 Dual-Core)
2 Gig Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS
Realtek High Definition Audio

ANY help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Answer:Erratic behavior in XP

Sounds like you are having lots of trouble. Since you are saying the hard drive is always busy, and the system is laggy, I suspect the hard drive is the main problem here.

First, run a chkdisk (myComputer>(right-click the drive)>properties>tool>error checking
Also run a disk defragmentation.

The hard drive could be causing your system to be sluggish because windows relies on it for its virtual memory.

If the above steps don't work, try returning your pc to where you bought it from. Since you said it was new, I should still be under some type of a warrenty, so it can proboly be repaired for free.

Best of luck,

Question: erratic start-up

My computer is four months old, it works perfectly with one exception. Every now and then it will not boot up unleaa the electricity is switched off at the mains and switched on again after about ten seconds.I know this is a small complaint but would appreciate anyone knowing why this should happen.

Answer:erratic start-up

The difference between switching off at the mains and switching off at the computer front panel is that while the mains is on there is still a standby 5V applied too the motherboard. It's this 5V standby that enables the front panel switch to start up the computer and also, if it's enabled, to allow external activity such as a modem or LAN to switch the computer on. Although this is only a small niggle at the moment it could be the beginning of a more serious problem developing and shouldn't be happening. The retailer should sort this out for you.

is this a new PC, if so, back to the supplier and let them fix the CDRWIf its not new then reinstal the driver, before checking if the drive is still considered functioning as far as you can see from properties in my computer on the system tab and dont confuse the driver with the CD writing software. Question: Erratic Fan Speeds

I've just bought a P4 3.06GHz with HT, with on board graphics, 512 Mb ram, DvD rw .As far as I can tell there are 2 fans ,1 on the chip (running at low speed continuously), 1 on the PSU (running at low speed continuously). Every now and again one of the fans pulses several times(that is increases speed temporarily, for a very short time),I am not running any intensive programs (just IE or maybe a really old game), but the unit is near a radiator that ive turned down to minimum.Ive moved up from a 433Mhz which either ran the fans at full speed for long periods or was quiet enough the rest of the time. Any ideas about the cause and remedies ?

Answer:Erratic Fan Speeds

Your CPU fan may be setup to spin faster when it reaches a certain temp , i have a Volcano cooler on a Gigabyte board , when the temp gets to 40 the fan speeds up for a few seconds till the temp drops again. When you boot up does the fan run full speed then drop after 30 seconds or so? , that could be a sign of this type of setup.

Question: USB mouse erratic

Hello forum, it's my first post. First of all, I've tried multiple mice, this one is a brand new Logitech, works fine on the other computer. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it is very erratic. I've turned off some of the default touchpad drivers and it helped a little, and I've gone into add/remove programs and msconfig to delete or turn off possibly conflicting processes. Is there any way I can prioritize my mouse above other processes? It almost makes me want to get a different computer, which is a Dell Inspiron. The Intel Core i5 processor was a huge let down; I thought it would be much better, and this mouse issue makes me want to throw the computer in the trash.

Answer:USB mouse erratic

There are a variety of possible solutions for this issue.1. Have you tried another usb port?2.Do you have the latest mouse driver?3.Is there a battery in your mouse if so is it in good condition?4. Have you gone to the system tray on your Inspiron and disabled the touch-pad  function?truenorth

In the passed, I could associate a file with the correct program to run it. Now I can't.Can anyone suggest a remedy?Windsor

Answer:Erratic fie associations

I think you may have to provide a bit more information Windsor for sometime to answer this one - ie: what has happened that you can no longer do this - also operating system would help.A couple of things might have happened. The most likely answer is that you once had a program on your computer that was able to work with this file extension, and now the program is gone. You might have uninstalled the program or deleted it in some other way. Or you could have installed a new program on your computer that supports this file type. New programs often make themselves the default viewer for certain file types. If you later uninstalled the newer program, you might still have a program on your computer that will open the file type, but it is no longer associated with those files because of the newer program that was once installed. To fix this problem, just right-click the file that you want to open, and choose the appropriate program from the Open With choices.

Question: Erratic Cursor

I have recently started having problems with my cursor slowly drifting around the screen or jumping just as I'm ready to click a button. This behavior starts out very slowly but over the course of a day or two gets much worse. This is a desktop system not a laptop so thumbs on the touch pad isn't the problem. I am using a Logitech wireless MouseMan optical that I have been using for years without incident.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Erratic Cursor

Have you tried putting fresh batteries in the mouse ?

Question: CPU temp erratic

i have just finished building a system for my brother in law. Intel mb and Celeron 2.5ghz CPU I have been running it for the last day and a half(not contiually)to make sure it is ok. I have just loaded XP Service pack two and then I checked the CPU temp using sisandra, to my amazement the temp was 12%Centigrade 50.4 Farenheit. This is the lowest temp I have ever seen on any of my systems, the fan is just a bog standrd CPU fan can this be right? or is sisandra recording a wrong temp somehow. I checked it a few mins ago in the BIOS and it is recording 50C now that is more believable if not a tad hot, now it is 29C it seems to be a bit irratic.

Answer:CPU temp erratic

BIOS is the one to check not a software one. this should work with a diode under CPU

Question: erratic restarting

every few minutes windows will restart.
is it a program?
could it be an erratic electrical supply?
will a battery operated surge supply connection help?
thank you

Answer:erratic restarting

could be lots of things.

1. how long does it take to restart?
2. is it about the same time every time, or at a specific time/action?
3. try leaving it off for a good while preferably somewhere cool. If your heatsink isn't cooling the processor well it could be causing the restart and if you turn it on after it gets nice and cool, and stays on a few minutes longer than usual. that may be your culprit.

It will sometimes boot normally, but more often it behaves as above. I am running Windows XP.Would very much appreciate any help. - thanks.

Answer:erratic startup

At the times when it fails to run properly what actually happens, i.e. what shows on the screen when it stalls? It will help to know what stage is reached.
