A problem occurs when trying to transfer a file during the Sims 2 installation

Question: A problem occurs when trying to transfer a file during the Sims 2 installation

Hi,

When I try to install the Sims 2 once it reaches 59%, an error message pops up saying, "A problem occured when trying to transfer the file 'TSDATA\Res\Sims3D\Sims12.package' from the media." I don't know what to do because the only options I get are, "Retry" and "Cancel". The strange thing is, I explored into the disk and I found the file in Disk 3 in a .zip file. What is happening? Thank you in advance to anybody who can help me.

System Specs:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
2.0 GHz Intel Pentium III (2 cpu)
1024 MB RAM
nVidia Quadro (a.k.a ELSA Gloria II) with 64 MB video memory with latest drivers
Latest version of DirectX

Preferred Solution: A problem occurs when trying to transfer a file during the Sims 2 installation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a read error. Try cleaning the disk with a soft cloth like a lens cloth for sunglasses or a tissue. If it still doesn't work you may need to moisten the cloth. Then lay a tissue on top to dry.

modthesims.info has years of colaborated information about playing and technical issues with Sims 2. It has everything you would ever want to know.

Hello,

This is my first time posting and I have a problem and I'm hoping someone can help me with it. I'm going to write everything I know about the problem, so sorry if I ramble on or whatver.

Anyways, I just got a copy of The Sims, and I've been trying to install it from the disk. The problem I'm having is that it gets to about 38% or so into the installation (same spot every time) and I get an error message saying that "_ins5176" has done an illigal operation and will be shut down, and when I click "ok", it shuts down the entire install wizard.
I've searched both the disk and my hard-drive for anything called "_ins5176" and it's nowhere to be found. I searched the internet with google, and have found that this problem happens during the installation of other programs as well, so I don't think I have a bad disk or anything. Unfortionatly, I didn't find any help in reguards to The Sims.
(also, at the begining of the install, it warns that there was a problem with uninstall, and I may not be able to uninstall the program, which I can deal with later...I just wanna play!)

Does anyone know how I could fix this or get past it so I can install and play the game??
Thanks in advance for any help....

Every time I try to install Sims 2 on my computer a message pops up saying there was a problem trasferring file 'TSData\Res\Sound\Voice5.package'from the media. It then asks if i want to retry to copy the file or cancel, and i've clicked reply over and over again until the status bar at the bottom reaches 100%.The file name is still there, and I don't know if thats the status bar for THAT particular file, or its a glitch. If anyone has had this same problem I would be grateful if you told me what you did to fix it.

I have retried several times but it doesnt work. It is not an downloaded game. Please help..

Sounds like a problem with the disc. Take disc back to shop and change it for a new disc.

My daughter is a SIMS addict and the only gift she got this year was The Sims 2, however it appears it was a bad choice for her PC. Following are the specs for her PC. Am I correct in assuming that this game will not run on her PC or is there an inexpensive single mom budget fix that will run this game?

Intel Celeron Processor at 2GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM at 266Mhz
Integrated Intel 3D AGP
60GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
48X Max Variable CD-ROM Drive
Integrated ADI 1885 Audio

At about 70% (disk 3) we get an error message that indicates a problem transferring data from:

TSData\Res\Catalog\Bins\globalcatbin.bundle.package

Thank you for your help, I'm clueless, I'm just the mom.

Answer:The Sims 2 installation problem

Seems like it should run Maybe the disk is defective. You should be able to exchange it or try loading it in a different pc but don't register it when you do.

there was an old topic about the exact problem i'm having, but it didn't help me and i can't reply to it for some reason. link is here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,126781.0/prev_next,prev.html#newSo i have a newer Asus and i'm trying to install the original sims on it. I've been installing the packs i have in this order: Deluxe edition, Unleashed, Superstar, and Makin' Magic.  The game works just fine when i play it right away, but if i come back and try to play it well after installing it tells me that an error has been detected with my installation click ok to proceed (ok being the only option) then it runs installshield for a little bit, and asks me if i want to uninstall the game. clicking cancel and trying to run the game again results in the same problem, but clicking ok uninstalls making magic AND deluxe edition but not any if the other expansion packs.  i'll re install deluxe and making magic and it will work again for a little bit but ultimately it won't work. running the installers as an administrater doesn't work, and because i have the last three expansions i shouldn't need the patch. this is getting really frustrating, and i would appriciate the help.fyi i'm running a 64 bit version of windows 7 and my computer can handle skyrim on min graphics settings so original sims should in theory be a walk in the park.

You might want to check the disk and see if it needs cleaning or has any scratches on it.

Okay, so... A long time ago, I installed and played the Sims 1 Deluxe with no problem. For some reason, I uninstalled it. Perhaps I got bored with it, or something... Anyway! Quite a few months later I attempted to install the same CD onto the same computer, and encountered a veriety of amusing problems.

At first, I was able to install the game with no problem, however, when I attempted to actually play the game, I got an error message, and I quote, "Sorry, there's not enough disk space free on . 209715200 bytes are required and only -1 bytres are free." I thought that was rather odd, but I knew I had a lot of stuff on my my computer, so I ended up getting rid of close to 3 gig of videos and such, only to get the same error message when I tried to start the game again.

It only gets better from here. I then tried to uninstall the game, thinking that maybe I could reinstall and whatever the problem was might go away. However, autorunning the Sims CD only got the very same window as when I installed the game for the first time, including the option of installing the game. For some reason, it seems, my computer does not recognize that the game's already installed. Out of curiosity, I tried to install it again, only to get the same error message as before. This error message also comes up when I try to get rid of the game from the Add/Remove programs window.

The most interesting part of this problem is the fact that I can still run The Sims Creator, which c... Read more

I'm trying to install Sims 2 Nightlife. I have disc 1 but not disc 2. I DO have all the disc 2 data saved to my computer though.

The problem is that in the middle of the installation it asks for disc 2, and there's nothing I can do without it.

Is there any way to continue the installation without the disc? I've tried to burn the data but I don't have discs that are big enough.

Answer:Sims 2 Nightlife Installation Problem

Not really going to help, not sure if there is a work around and if there was I don't think Majorgeeks supports that. The data itself isn't enough to complete an installation the disc has a unique image on it that only it contains to stop piracy.

Hi,
Trying to install sims 2 pets from new dvd and having problems!

Installation process gets so far then I get:

"This product will now ensure that your existing installation is up to date"

Then I get:

"There is not enough free hard drive space to complete installation of the update. At least 200MB is required"

This doesn't make sense as I have approx 30Gb of space free on drive C:

Any help appreciated

Answer:sims 2 pets installation problem

The Sims tries to install in TWO places (the main 'game' folder - by default c:\program files\...... and your 'My Documents' folder). If you're like me and don't use the default installation paths, you need to check the hard disk space both for where you are installing the game itself, and also the drive on which your 'My Documents' folder is located (Sims expansion packs install to both these places).

Hi Everyone
If you're reading this thanks, I really hope you can help me! Before I tell the problem I have to tell you a little story. One day I was going to a second-hand game store. I took the Sims 2 University to the desk and they took it. A few minutes later they came back and told me that there wasn't the disc only the case. A few months later I went back to the store and succesfully bought the Sims 2 University (And also Apartment Life and IKEA Home Stuff). I cleaned it because it wasn't very clean (I just rubbed it against some cloth) then put it into my laptop. When it got to 13% it froze then went on to 14% I had to go take my dog for a walk so I left it to install. I took about 1 and a half hours and when I got back it said "Could not install the file : TSData/Res/Sound/Misc.package would you like to retry or cancel the installation?". I pressed retry then about 5 minutes later it came up with the same thing. I pressed it about 3 times then I got bored so I decided I would try later. Now I'm installing it and I pressed retry twice but this time it's taking longer for the box to come up so if it works I'll repost, but I don't think it will so would anyone reading this please post something helpful. I also would like to know any FREE ways to clean a disc. The box just came up so I'm clicking retry because I wont be beaten by a disc! I WONT!
Thanks for your time, Dreamerrush!

But when I try and install it it says "error getting sku number from regestry. installation aborted" so I downloaded the sims eraser and ran it god knows how many times and it changes nothing, I've searched my entire pc for sims or maxis or anything I can think fo related and it finds nothing. I have deleted it out of my desktop, program files and everything but it still won't work. I can only find one thing relating to the sims which is the sims complete collection in my add/remove programmes window but when I click remove it won't let me and just tries to install again and comes up with the same issue. There is actually an old thread on this.
Reader Problem
I have continually experienced this issue... and a picture or to is worth a thousand words.
This is on a new, clean, and fully updated W8.1 install. Typically the problem occurs under the following type of use. I am on a web page and wish to open a pdf that has been linked to. The problem occurs on any type of site... I often need to access
data sheets and so make extensive use of reader.
1/ We click the link

2/ At this point one of two things typically happens although both scenarios generate the same message. On clicking the link Reader opens with a 'can't open this file' and 'there is a problem with the file format' message. The background can be
either the last pdf to have been open in reader (even if this was days ago and the machine has been shut down since viewing it) or simply a black background.

 or we simply see,

3/ When I click close I might now see another pdf that has recently been open such as here.

5/ Should the above occur I simply have to close Reader.
6/ I now try again. The link that should have been selected and opened is flashing yellow. I select it....

7/ Without fail, the link will now correctly load and open Reader.

Guys,
My etherlink 3com network card is not working. I have tied to install the network card and update the drivers and it is still not working. I don't even have a green light on the card. I tried installing a second card in it's place and still no luck. This is on a Windows 2000 OS machine.

Here is the error I am getting:

I have done the following:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the following key in the registry:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI

Delete each subkey whose device description pertains to a network interface card. Do not delete the VEN key itself. Here is an example of a device description that pertains to a network adapter: DeviceDesc:REG_SZ:3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX)
Note that you may need to give the Everyone group Full Control permissions on these VENxx registry keys to delete them using Registry Editor. To do this, click Security, click Permissions, click Advanced, click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects check box, and then click OK. Hi,

First post coming up....

I have created a profile snapshot, using Windows Easy Transfer (WET) on a 32bit XP machine and have placed the resulting file on a network drive.
I then went to my new 64bit W7 pc and downloaded what I believed to be the correct WET version - wet7xp_x64. However, when I ran the executable I received a message "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
I'm running W7 Pro SP1 and have Sophos installed. However Sophos didn't have a problem on the XP machine so don't think it's that.

Any thoughts anyone?

Answer:Windows 7 Easy Transfer installation problem

Hi Andy, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You don't need to install WET on Windows Seven, it's built-in. Just type Easy Transfer on Start Menu > Search field to find it.

Hi All,

When I try to install my PCMCIA ethernet NIC or my Dell TrueMobile wireless mini-PCI card I get the following error:

"An error occurred during the installation of the device. The INF or the device information set or element does not match the specified install class"

I found the following explanation in Microsoft Help & Support:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306983

I have tried unsuccessfully the method described above.

Searching the web I have found a couple of threads dealing with this problem. However, they finally end up reinstalling Windows from scratch or upgrading to XP. Frustrating.

Does anybody know if there is a solution to this (apparently) very difficult problem?

Thanks in advance.

So I just got the Sony Ericsson W850i and yesterday I installed its software and drivers on the PC and even today I installed more drivers that came up automatically when I connect the USB cable with my mobile.

The problem is that when I select FILE TRANSFER from my mobile the PC gives me the Blue Screen, and tells me that there is some sort of error and the PC restarts, I tried it again and it restarted again. I don't know what the problem may be. It could be something with the drivers but I am sure I installed every driver for it because they install automatically.

What can I do?

I tried this in the hardware forum with no result. Maybe the software Geeks can help me.

A friend has a new laptop and wants to transfer files to it from his PC. Both computers have USB type A ports and both have ethernet connectors.

The OS for the PC is WIN98 and the laptop is XP Home.

What is the best way to transfer files and does he need a software program to do this; or will Computer A recognize Computer B as a virtual drive and he can drag-n-drop the files?

I searched on "file transfer" but got no result that helps me with this problem.

I have an external drive (A Maxtor 500 GB, NTFS) that I've been using.
I was transferring (moving) large amount of files (about 40 GB, mostly game setups) from my computer to the hard drive. It succeeded a big portion of the transfer, but then it started to give the error below:

"Can't read from the source file or disk."

I pressed on "retry" couple of times. First it did move those files, but then it started to get stuck.

Now it gives the same error when I try ANY file transfer (Move OR Copy) to the external hard drive.
I tried using a third party software called "goodsync" as well, but no use.

I can move or copy files within the external drive;
I can move or copy files from the external drive
but not TO it.
I was thinking of bad sectors on the hard drive.

Does anyone know how to find the trouble and any solution to that?

Thanks in advance.

I have a new dell computer and after a lot of problems dell suggested the only option would be for me to re install window xp media center again. I duly saved all my data using the files and settings transfer wizard requesting files only. It saveed them as : IMG00001.DAT, IMG00002.DAT, IMG00003.DAT and so on and I burned them to DVD. On coming to reinstall them the computer gave me a message "Transfer in progress, please wait while the Wizard transfers files and settings". Almost immediately thereafter I received the following message: "Please insert Disk 1". And then a final message: "The disk you inserted in not the correct one, insert Disk 1".I had two disks so I tried the other first but to no avail. I have seen several posts on various websites that other people have had similar problems but cant seem to find a solution. Can someone help with this as I really dont relish the idea of loosing all my files!! - thanks in anticipation Helen

Answer:Problem with file transfer wizard

Have you tried inserting the discs and see if it will boot from the disks ?Also make sure your Microsoft updates are upto date.

I have had a similar problem - running win98se - abit be6 PIII 500 mhz 20 gig and 40 gig drives - I can transfer files from the 20 gig to anywhere - but, if I try to transfer files from the 40 gig to either the 20 gig or to the network - system freezes. I have tried everything I can think of. Scandisk and defrag have been done periodically. The ABTI board (BE6) is udma 66 - both drives are at this time on the umda 66 ports - I have moved them to other ports with the same results. Over the years the whole system has been changed except the motherboard and the 20 gig drive. I have changed from network server settings to desktop computer and back - set the read ahead to zero from 64 - - -
I have thought it was a problem with the 20 gig drive "choking" when I am trying to feed it from the 40 gig. But, when I am trying to copy a large file to another computer on the network from the 40 gig drive I have the same problem - - file starts to copy - sometimes if it is one file - it will get through but, the next file - transfers for a while then - total freezeup -
Any ideas would be appreciated -
Oh - and the copy in dos idea - tried it too - FREEZEUP immediately. I am beginning to think its time to take this computer to the gun range for target practice!!!

Hi,

I recently formatted my laptop to get rid of some really annoying bugs. However before doing so i used Microsoft File Transfer to transfer all my documents and settings to my z drive (stored on my desktop computer via home network) in order to format my laptop and then retrieve my documents/settings.

I ran file transfer once xp home edition and all my programs were re-installed to find that the File transfer can not locate my file. it is clearly sitting on my z drive named "USMT2.UNC" however the following message comes up when i run the wizard to re-install my documents/settings.

"The location you specified does not contain stored information. Please type a valid folder path into the edit box. If you entered a path to a folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the drive."

I am currently trying to copy the contents onto the desktop, to try and run the wizard from that location, however it has 236minutes remaining because of the size of the file.

Does anyone know how i can re-install my files and settings without losing any of this data?

Hi,

I am having a few issues with a FAST transfer. I am trying to do the transfer between 2 desktop PCs both with XP Pro and SP3. The problem is as follows.

I used the wizard to copy the files and settings to a Maxtor external HDD. This completed and the final size of the USMT file is 131GB. This included 4 different user profiles and all the files and settings for each user. However, when i try and transfer these via the wizard onto the second computer ( which has a 150GB SATA HDD - this is connected to an ATA motherboard via a converter ) only the folders are transferred, none of the files. I tried to transfer this onto a fresh install of XP Pro with a user account of a different name to any of those in the USMT files.

The wizard then says that it has completed and that some settings need to be transferred manually.

when i look at the used space on the destination computer it shows that only 10GB has been used. where is the other 121GB?

i have been told that i need to do the transfer on an HDD with free space equivalent to 4x that of the USMT files. could this be the reason?

Any help will be very much appreciated. i have been trying to do this for a while now and it is for a family friend. this includes their daughters gcse coursework and all their holiday snaps etc and im starting to panic a bit!

I have 6 computers on my LAN. When I'm playing an audio file on one pc and I start transferring something across my LAN to that pc, the audio playback starts sounding almost like it's breaking up. That pc is running an AMD XP 2000 cpu with 512 megs of ram and an M-Audio 2496 audio card. Also, all of my pc's are running gigabit NIC's and I have gigabit switch.

Anyone got any clues why that pc's audio playback would sound like that? I'm only running 2 programs on it...BSI's WaveStation and Cool Edit 2000.

Thanks!

Have a look in Device Manager to check if the bluetooth driver has installed properly and is the correct one for your laptop.

If it shows an error symbol it might be the wrong driver. Go to Dell's website and get the correct driver.

I'm trying to send files between two Vista machines in my home. Both belong to the same Workgroup and I have the exact same account name on both computers. I enabled file sharing in the Network and Sharing Center and I also told Vista which folders I wanted share on both computers. I can send files from one PC to another just fine, but when I try to send files from the other computer, I'm told the other computer is not accessible and I have a logon failure. I tried disabling my firewall but the problem persists.

Hi,

I have recently started having a problem with FTP transfers on large (over about 6mb) files to my CNC machine.

I have a single CNC machine I use for little personal machining jobs that takes programs from a windows computer, I have recently upgraded my transfer PC from NT to XP, I have no firewall and am using WSFTP to transfer the files.

If the file is over about 6mb WSFTP will get to about 80% or so then just stop, the connection doesnt drop it just stops transfering, I have tried various other FTP programs, but they all show the same problem.

The machine is the same as it was, and the only thing that has changed is the OS on the PC, NT to XP, is there any reason why this could be happening?, I have run out of all ideas.

Dan.

We have now 2 pc's connected to each other through Firewire-cable. The connection works fine and file-transferring works great. But then, when it comes to try transferring 12GB avi-file to another pc, which has around 26GB free space, it rejects to transfer it at all. Why? There is more than two times free space on that hard-drive. It says, not enough free diskspace. That's weird.

And OS on that another pc is Win XP Pro.

Would ge glad, if you could help! :D

Answer:AVI-file transfer over Firewire-problem

Dont know if this would work but try renaming the avi to jpeg, see if that transfers and if it does rename it to avi on the other computer. Make Sure you have hide extensions for known file types unticked to do this open my documents click tools then folder options then click the view tab and look for "hide extensions for known file types" make sure it is unticked.

I'm trying to transfer files from an XP desktop to a new vista laptop. Using the transfer wizard I can only go as far as the "select a method" screen and then the "use the home network" option is greyed out, and I cannot figure out why. I have about 10 gigs of data to transfer so I figure this'd be the quickest way, but not sure what to do to solve the problem.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Answer:Solved: Transfer file problem

If you have a home network (I suppose they mean a workgroup) set up why not just copy the files? I wouldn't trust a transfer wizard with my data.

We just upgraded our XP to Windows 7 Ultimate x86. First when he installed it he chose the custom option. Then the Easy File Transfer kept giving a "file already open" error. He reinserted the disc to try a clean install & it went through an install process without asking for custom or new.

After that he tried again to use the Easy File Transfer to restore the files & now it just says "can't open file". We followed the instructions - what are we missing?

Also, we're concerend there are other older versions of MS Office (2003). Will this install of 7 have overwritten/removed them or do we need to do something to remove them from our hard drive?

Thanks

Answer:Problem using Easy File Transfer

There are two types of install, clean (custom) or upgrade. From your commens I am not sure which one you chose. If you chose clean, everything is gone; programs, applications, mail, everything. If you chose upgrade, everything should still be there.

Based upon MS propaganda upgrades are not possible from XP to W7. When they say not possible, I do not know if it really is not possible or the result would be a Frankenstein OS.

My advice if you are not happy with the outcome, try again and this time do a clean install

As far as easy transfer, apparantly, something is corrupted or not working correctly. You may have lost the files. Go to your C: drive check for a folder windows.old, that is your old files and you may be able to restore some files from that.

Hi.

I run Windows XP, and just checked drive C:\ (which contains my OS). That drive is okay.

The problem is, each time I intend to copy or move a file from one drive to another drive of my PC (external USB drives or internal IDE drives), the file transfer never completes, it always halts - mostly at the end of the last file (in case of several files). The file(s) cannot be opened at that time, I furst have to restart the system.

If I transferred via Windows Explorer, the Explorer crashes, too. If I transfer via the file browser of another program (WinRar, and drag'n'drop, etc.), that program crashes, too.

I feel helpless, because I cannot transfer any file anymore, without having first to restart the OS to complete the transfer or to remove the blocked file handle.

Help very welcome.

I recently bought a Yoga 900 Laptop running Windows 10 Home and I am facing a peculiar problem. I normally back up my files in external usb drives. I have some portable external drives (2.5 inch) and some desktop external drives (3.5 inch). All are USB 3.0 compliant. The desktop external drives are separately powered while the portable one are only connected via a USB 3.0 cable. When I transfer video files to the portable external drives from my Yoga 900 I get an average transfer speed of 125 MB/s. There is no interruption during this transfer. When I transfer the same video file to the desktop external drives the transfer is very very slow and for extensive periods of time it shows transfer speed of 0MB/s. The total time taken is triple that of the portable drives. After noticing this, I have reinstalled windows, updated all hardware drivers from the Lenovo website. Cleaned the registry and even done selective start up by removing some 3rd party start up programs, I have also switched off write caching and switched it back on again but the problem still remains. I also find that when I connect 2 external USB drives (one portable and one desktop) and I try to transfer the same video files from the porrtable to the desktop there is no problem there also. It is only transferring files from the internal Laptop drive that has this issue. I have 2 other laptops (one running Windows 10 Pro and one running Windows 10 Home) and when I transfer the same f... Try running a free "Live DVD" of Linux to check your files for errors, run CCleaner, Defrag and see if it improves.

Hello everybody! Long-time listener, first time caller.

My laptop of four years (a toshiba) recently lost the ability to charge and will no longer power up. I have files on the hardrive that I'd like to transfer to another computer, but since I can't even get it to power-up, a simple flashdrive just won't do. I have a few options:

1)Since the problem dealt with the input in the back becoming loose, I thought about taking it apart and repairing it so it can charge correctly. I've heard it's kind of dangerous, and I've seen tutorials, so it's really not something I want to attempt or ask anyone to do for me.
2) Buy a new battery and hope it lasts long enough for me to extract pics/music/papers/etc.
3) Somehow get at the laptop hard drive and use it as an external hard drive to transfer the files.

So, in short, I know these are my options, but I have no idea how to start pursuing these things, or if there is an easier/better way to get the information out of my laptop. I'd prefer a way to keep using my laptop, but I understand if it's just not possible anymore.

Thanks in advance! Trust that I wouldn't take up your time if this stuff wasn't important to me. -TGH

Answer:Dead computer = file transfer problem...

Option 3 is the cheapest and easiest.
The drives are usually fairly easily removable without taking it apart.
In most cases it is a single screw to remove the disk holder from the case and then just 4 screws to remove the disk from the holder.
There will also be a pull off adapter on the connecting pins.

Not sure if this goes in this or the hardware forum cause I'm not sure what's up...

I've been recording TV shows via ATI Video Wonder USB 2.0 onto my Gateway laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. The ATI VW came with a program that translates the video files for the ATI into other formats. I've been using Mpeg1 for various reasons.

I've then been using Windows Movie Maker to cut out pieces I don't want and translating the Mpeg1 into .wma files.

Recently my laptop has begun cutting out any time I attempt to use ATI to translate .vcr (the raw TV recording) into .mpg (the Mpeg1), or when I try to save a video I've made in WMM into .wma. It doesn't shut down or give me an error, it simply cuts as if the battery had been ripped out mid-operation.

I've tried using safe mode, with the result that it seems to cut out sooner than usual. I've still got 30% of the hard drive free and I've defragmented it to see if it would have an effect.

The .vcr files are usually 1-2 gigabytes, the .mpg files usually about 70% of that size-wise, and the individual segments I try to save in .wma are usually 100-300 megabytes.

I'm not sure what other information might be needed. I've run out of resources from my friends and family as to what might be wrong...

Thanks.

Answer:File Transfer Computer Cutout Problem...

While I'm not real well versed in video - I'd suspect corruption in one of the video programs that you're using. I'd suggest updating/reinstalling these programs.Another possibility is that the programs ran out of resources to complete the tasks and then terminated themselves. Check your Event Viewer ( Instructions here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/ ) for any Application errors at the time that this happens.

Hi,

I'm having some problems with the Windows 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard'. Although I'm not sure if the problem is networking related.

I have just built myself a new computer using XP and I am trying to transfer some files and settings from my laptop. I have setup a network from my desktop to the laptop (thats how I'm connected to the net, desktop internet through the laptop) and opened the transfer wizard on the laptop through the start menu. I have gone through the process answering the question that the computers are linked through a home network but I then just get the message,

"The wizard cannot locate your new computer. Make sure the new computer is turned on and that your network is working properly."

But this doesnt make sense as I'm using the desktop to type this question on the internet which is connected through the laptops connection, and so the network must be working properly? I'm baffled.

I know you can use a serial cable as an alternative but my laptop doesnt have a serial port so I have no choice but to use an ethernet cable.

Any help is greatly appriciated.

Thanks
Skin.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, not sure if the problem is with the wizard or the network.

During transferring the picture files from the camera to a laptop the Camera was inadvertently turned off. When turned back on an error message states "Format Error" and the status light blinks orange.

How can I correct this problem?

Will I lose the picture files that still reside on the memory chip?

One option would be to take the card to a CVS etc... and see if their machine can read it... If so have it burned to a cd them put the card back in the camera and format it.

or buy yourself a reader and ty it yourself

try some of the recovery software that is available... http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

I recently received a Creative Zen Micro MP3 player which is supposedly compatible with Windows 98, which I have on my computer. However, the file transfer software which comes with the MP3 player is useless with Windows 98, and after calling Creative tech support apparently you have to use Windows Media Player to transfer MP3's. A few weeks back I transfered a few songs with no problems. Well I was attempting to transfer some songs tonight, and not only did I get an error message stating "Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error.", but every song that I attempted to transfer was completely deleted from its folder!! Any ideas on 1) how to find where these MP3 files went, and 2) How to successfully transfer songs to my MP3 player (other than bucking up for Windows XP).

Thanks.

Any ideas on 1) how to find where these MP3 files wentClick to expand...

I would search the computer for MP3s. To do so, please do the following:

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Select 'Search' (or find...can't recall w/ 98)
3. Ensure it is set to search My Computer
4. Search for '*.mp3' (without the quotes)

Windows will now locate every MP3 file on the computer. If you switch to detail view by right clicking in a blank space, expanding the 'View' submenu, and selecting 'Details', you will also get the location of the files.

Because of serious (i.e. blue screen of death) problems, I had to do a complete reinstall of Winds XP Home on my Dell XPS system. Before starting (under the guidance of Dell tech support), I used the files and settings transfer wizard to move files and settings to a SanDisk 250 MB flash drive. After reinstalling Windows, I ran the wizard and although it seems to run and seems to successfully finish, none of the files and settings transferred. The file on the SanDisk drive is called USMT2IMG and is 167,643 KB identified by Windows explorer as a DAT file. Dell says that, as part of the underlying problem that caused the need to reinstall Windows, there may have been corruption to files leading to the failure of the Wizard to run properly.

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance

I am having problems transferring large files to my Windows 8 machine from my Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server, and Windows 2012 server. The files starts off transferring between 110-118MB/s but then drop below 20MB/s and stay there. I have tried 2 different nics (onboard and a Intel pro 1000mt nic) and get the same problem with both. I don't have this transfer problems when I move files between my Windows 7 machines and Windows 2008 server machine, only the Windows 8 machine. All these machines are on a Windows 2003 domain. Here are things that I tried to fix the problem.

- Tried 2 different nics (onboard Intel 1217-V and Intel Pro 1000MT pci nic)
- Disabled smb signing on my Windows 2003 DC (used this link to do it: http://support.exinda.com/topic/how...on-windows-servers-to-improve-smb-performance)
- Disabled Large Send Offload (IPv4 and IPv6) in the advanced nic properties
- Install latest nic driver

I am having a similar transferring problems on my Windows Server 2012 machine when I try nic teaming. When I don't use nic teaming my transfer speed are constant.

Have anyone experience this problem or know what I may need to do to fix it?

Specs of the Windows 8 machine is listed below.
Motherboard: Gigabyte z87x-D3H
CPU: Intel I5-4670 Haswell
RAM: 8gb Kingston
OS: Windows 8 32bit evaluation

Answer:Windows 8 file transfer speed problem

It sounds like the buffer mismatch that happened between Windows 7 and 2003. I never could get it to work without upgrading all of the boxes, but there were some registry entries that attempted to fix it.

I have an XP computer which I store all my media files (movies/tvshows/music etc... )
this is all it does
I have shares setup on the computer ( movies / tvshows / music )

I use my Windows 7 computer to do my downloading from and I am having problems with transferring files from my
Windows 7 box to the XP box.
I mapped drives on the Win 7 box to the XP shares

when I transfer any file, to the mapped drive (share) it often fails saying error with connection etc..
what is weird is that if I zip that file, and extract it from the zip to the mapped drive, it works like a charm

is there any reason why the regular file transfer fails, but extracting from zip/rar works ?

Hi,

I have put in the cd for sims 2. I say open (I already know from friends computer where it saves too). It then starts downloading-when it reaches 49% on disc 3, it stops.

Then after that is just doesn't load anymore. There is alot of room on C drive. It doesn't freeze it just doesn't load anymore.

I love the game dearly but it will never work. I have tried all my friends sims 2 games, and tried to download but on every single time i try it won't go any further.
What is wrong?

Thankx

Ok this is my last hope.
I have all the sims PC games all original not the deluxe and took them off to free up space on my computer.
Today i was reinstalling them and i installed orignal sims that worked fine, then i installed house party that was fine to.
I put on house party before livin large because i have lost LL
Then i went to put on hot date.. and during the installing of the installation shelid i get an error message saying " can not install support file C:/windows/temp{017e65b1-7484-461a-b16f-7c931166083b}setup.inx"
or at least something along those lines
I then hit ok and it shuts down the installation.
So i was like fine and unistalled it all and went to maxis site and got a sim eraser which is ment to fix problems when reinstalling games after clearing all that i repeated the above steps and the same thing happend
So i went to ea tech support and there was this post with the exact same error comming up and the guy said clear out all temp file so i did that and the message still comes up
i have tried everything that i can think of shut down everything
i even found the temp file that it says that it cant install
and as you can tell i am losing my mind
the only thing that i can think of is that i must have Living large to run hotdate but it doesnt say that anywhere
pls help i have wasted tooo much time as it is searching everything i can imagine
thanks

Question: Sims installation

I installed sims and it worked fine. I borrowed some expansion packs and installed Unleashed. Before the installation completed, there was an error message. I can't remember what it said, but after that, sims wasn't installed on my computer. When I tried to install it again, everything worked fine, but when the installation actually started, it didn't do anything. It didn't read the cd, and the only way I could close the screen was with ctrl+alt+delete. I couldn't find any way to install it. The first time I installed it was with the original cd I borrowed from someone. I burned the cd and used it to play. Someone help!!

Game manufacturer's have many ways to prevent the piracy you are attempting. Perhaps if you had your own legal copy they would help? We don't do warez, cracks, or piracy here.

Question: sims installation

i've installed sims, livinglarge, and unleashed what will happen if i install house party?

Answer:sims installation

Hi,

Ya, the standard party line is you should install them in order that they were released. In your case that would be....

Sims/Living Large/House Party/Unleashed.

If you want to get a real answer I would suggest you go to this forum. It's the best forum for getting technical answers for Sims related stuff. All the folks that hack the programs and expansion packs post there and should be able to answer your question better than anyone.

hi how can i get sims 3 to work on my computer without the disk having to be in??ive got football manager 2009 on my computer and i dont need the disk in to play that but i do with sims 3 reason i ask my girlfriend wants it on her computer aswell as me on mine thanks

Answer:Sims 3 installation

I would imagine that Sims3 EULA says that it is for a single installation so the only legal way is for your girlfriend to buy her own copy of Sims3.

Hello,

I'm trying to install the Sims 2, which has installed fine, but the game won't run. I keep getting the following message:

'Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make
sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest
drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.'

I've done Run-dxdiag and it is showing that I have DirectX 9.0c...

I've tried downloading DirectX from the Microsoft website but it says I have the current version.

I'm trying to run it on my Dell Inspiron 1300, Windows XP service pack 3.

Please Help!

Many thanks.

Answer:Sims 2 Installation Help

Hello,

I'm not sure that its the DirectX but instead your Graphics Card.
This may work... Try these steps in order:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
1: Click Start then click Control Panel
2: In Control Panel click Performance and Maintenance
3: Then click System
4: On the Hardware tab click Device Manager
5: Click Display Adapters and right click the then click your Display Adapter that just expanded
6: Right Click on your Display Adapter and click Update Driver Software...

Let it update and hopefully your game will work!

Also, please look at this thread to see if your system meets the minimum requirements for the game... http://forums.techguy.org/games/287910-common-sims-2-problems.html

its a dell insparon laptop with windows 7

help would be much appriciated

Answer:sims 2 installation, please help!

Are there any scratches on the disk? Can you read the disk at all? (Go into My Computer, right-click on the CD drive and open it.) Have you tried it in another computer? Sometimes one disk won't get along with one cd-drive, so you could try to install it with an external hard drive.

When i downloaded it, there was a folder 'the sim2' in which there are folders cd1, cd2, cd3 and cd4.. Ive also got daemon tools pro..but how to use?! (it doesnt appear in the taskbar btw).. Ive tried 'mounting' or whatever..but which file should i mount? Ive got no clue!
Please help..Im dying to install and play here but no luck..

Additional Details
I did mount 'cd1' folder from the folder 'the sims2'.. It starts the setup, asks for the code..(which i correctly enter) and starts installation n goes on for a while.. But then it stops in between and a message comes up - 'please insert disk number 2'!!
Ive tried opening 'cd2' and clicked on 'rungame'..(i even mounted and checked) but nothing happens! Nothing opens..no response.. Same is when i 'rungame' with cd3 and cd4..
What on earth is happening?! :'(
Okay i tried magiciso and converted the folders into iso..and then used it with daemon tools. Still the same problem - when i click on cd1 folder, installation starts but stops saying 'insert disk 2 first'. Hmmph.. i tried mounting cd2 folder then..but no luck! CAN U GIVE ME STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTION? Please help!

Originally, i had the problem that others seem to, which is installation stalling at 23% on disk 2. Have exchanged the copies at the shop twice with no luck but eventually my son found out how to install it manually by copying the disks. Unfortunately in a fit of spring cleaning i accidentally deleted it and now we can't work out how to get it back on again.
I have copied the contents of each disk into folders in C , then hit autorun. But this still asks for the disks to be put in and still stalls at 23% even though all the data is on the hard drive.
Can someone please tell me what step i am missing?

I am getting incredibly frustrated!!! I keep trying to install my Sims onto my new laptop - I manage to get all the way through all the updates I have (Sims Deluxe, House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Unleashed and Makin Magic) and then if I play immediately it works ok, but if I exit and try to play again or if I don't play immediately, it keeps coming up with a message: It has come to our attention that you have installed another Sims expansion pack after The Sims Makin Magic((NOT TRUE)). For this to work properly, The Sims Makin Magic installer will now update your installation. Select OK to proceed. (only option is to press OK) Then the installshield wizard runs, and asks if I'd like to uninstall The Sims Makin Magic, which then actually uninstalls everything, and I'm back to square one. I have reinstalled and restarted more times than I'd care to admit, and would REALLy appreciate it if anyone had some advice, something I could try, or if they could even point out something incredibly obviously wrong that I am doing.......

Hi, I bought The Sims for my old WIN 98 like 4 years ago and I didn't play The Sims after I got my new computer like 2 years ago. Now I got bored of all my games and I want to play The Sims again, but when I tried to install it it said there was this problem saying "C:WINDOW\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." Does anyone know what I should do?

By the way my XP and my Sims CD is the original version I bought The Sims and my computer had XP on it.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but on the box of my Sims game it said it works with WIN98 and 96 but never said anything about XP

Thanks for the help =)

I recently got a new computer, and am trying to transfer all my old files off of the old one, but the transfer speed that I get seem very slow.

The computers are connected by a cat5 cable, with a router between them. Could the router be causing the problem?

Shouldn't the transfer speed be 100mbps?

Hi guys,

Here is the deal! I have Windows Home Server on one computer and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on other. If I try to transfer file from WHS to WIN7, to transfer wont start. It hangs on "calculating". Sometimes is starts, but crashes pretty fast.

If I upload from WIN7 to WHS, it works. If I download from Ubuntu (samba) to WIN7 it works. Everything works, BUT transfer from WHS to WIN7. I also cant stream video or music, it just wont work.

My WIN7 has motherboard Asus P5K with Atheros L1 gigabit NIC. Router is D-link DWL-4300 with newest firmware.

Any good ideas what to try. Problem definately seems to be between WHS and WIN7. since everything else seems to work. I'm really open for good ideas here guys

Answer:Windows home server (WHS) file transfer problem

Are the Windows 7 HS and the Win 7 Pro machine part of the same Homegroup?

The Win 7 HS may require you to be in the same Homegroup as the Win pro machine.

Hi all

The other day I bought my dad a flash drive (Kingston, 2 Gb) for him to back-up all his files. There are about 180 files, all either MS Word, Access or Excel documents and in total come to around 50 Mb.

I selected alll files in the relevant folder and dragged/dropped to the flash drive. To cut a long story short, I managed to copy all apart from 17 of them. For some reason whenever I try one of these 17 I get the message "Unable to copy [filename]. The file could not be created." or words to that effect.

These 17 files seem no different from any of those that were copied succesfully- they're the same format, created on the same PC with the same software. They can all be accessed/edited ok and so are not obviously corrupt. I tried creating a new file and copying info from one of the rogue 17 into this, them copying the new file across to the flash drive, but I get the same error. I thought this must mean there's something wrong with the data/how it's been entered but it seems to be exactly the same format/arrangement as the data in the files that have copied ok.

Does anybody know what's going on?

I have.....(installed in this order)The SimsHot DateVacation UnleashedMakin MagicIm guessing there installed in the wrong order cause it keeps saying to insert the correct cd-rom. Wich order do i need to install them in?

Answer:The Sims 1 installation order?

The correct order to install them is by release date. Once all are installed, if I remember right you should play from the disc of the last one installed (Makin' Magic in your case). Here's the release order of all the expansions:The Sims: Livin' LargeThe Sims: House PartyThe Sims: Hot DateThe Sims: VacationThe Sims: UnleashedThe Sims: SuperstarThe Sims: Makin' MagicSince you said you've installed them in this order, which disc are you using to try to play the game? The Sims is notorious for this little problem. Can't believe they never did anything to fix it or simplify it.

I generally a fairly competent PC user, but I just got a new MacBook Pro for Christmas and I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.2

I have almost 2 GB free of memory, so I don't understand why it tells me I don't have 1MB free and how do I bypass that? It's a new game, I just took it out of the box.
