AOL fails to load when clicking icon

Question: AOL fails to load when clicking icon

Running Vista OS and have made no changes that I am aware of. When I click the AOL icon I get the spinning circle for about 10 seconds and then nothing happens. Doesn't matter which shortcut I try, same result. Have tried reinstalling the AOL software after deleting the old and removing it from the registry, After reinstall, the welcome page loads and I'm able to sign on to AOL but after about 10 seconds the website disappears and I get the message that AOL is trying to reconnect but after clicking OK, it disappears and thats all. If I try to click on the AOL icon again, it doesn't load just like before. Have tried the obvious stuff like restarting the PC to no avail. This happened about a year ago and after several weeks it seemed to correct itself.Any ideas?Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Preferred Solution: AOL fails to load when clicking icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a new issue for me. Client has desktop system that often clicking an icon or right clicking anywhere does nothing on the desktop. We can access the start menu and task bar. Many times this is after opening a window or two. We go back to the desktop to access a shortcut and nothing works except the task bar. Right or left clicking an icon does nothing and right clicking open space does nothing. So far the only recovery I have found is to reboot. This can happen at the first cold boot of the day, after the system has been on for hours idle or not, after just a few minutes. I don't see a pattern. There isn't a single program we are accessing that causes this that we can see. There are no strange programs on this computer all pretty routine stuff. I have run malwarebytes and his virus scanner and found nothing. Have also ran CCleaner. What I find through google doesn't seem to match what I have here. Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated.Likely

Hi paulski, and welcome to TSG.

There are these things called capitalization and punctuation that make reading things a lot easier to understand. You should try them.

I can not tell from your post what it has to do with Digital Photography or Digital Imaging (the forum you posted in).

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).

Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

Hi guys...I have this weird problem..
I noticed this problem when i turned on my notebook and happened to go into one of the folders where I had all my wallpapers..I tried to right click on it and the hour glass showed up and did nothing...it froze and the window eventually closed by itself..This happens for the first 3 to 4 minutes after reboot and then everything turns back to normal..I have win 7 home premium 64 bit and microsoft security essentials and super antispyware..Windows is updated whenever required...Help would be really appreciated..
Thank you.

Answer:Right clicking fails for few minutes after reboot

Welcome
It sounds like after a reboot there is some process that is using memory and it slows up every thing else. See if a clean boot can help diagnose
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
Also, run a full anti virus scan and downloand and make full scan with malwarebytes. Make sure you update them first.
After this is solved, I would use Malwarebytes for a once a week scan. You need only the free version.

I was trying to make some changes to7-Zip file associations and have managed to lose the ability to open a 7-Zip file (with a .7z extension) by double clicking it with the left mouse button.

All other operations work fine. I can open a file from the main program. I can right click it to get into the 7-Zip context menu and open it, either directly, or by using "open with" (which tells me that the default program is 7-Zip). I can extract files from a 7-Zip archive. In other words I can do everything except open a 7-Zip file by double clicking it. If I do this the program hangs and the little round circle flickers rapidly. The only way to stop this is to log off and log back on.

If I go to Control Panel -> Default Programs -> 'Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program' there is no sign of a .7z extension. However, there is a .z extension associated with 7-Zip and if I change the .7z extension to .z on a file I can now open it with 7-Zip by double clicking.

I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 7-Zip program, to no effect.

So, is there any way to get my double click back?

Answer:right-clicking an icon

See Here: Customize Context MenusBe advised that some of the suggested fixes require editing the registry. If you will be using a fix that requires a registry edit or edits? Before doing so it is strongly advised you back up your registry. When I click my 'Start' icon on the bottom left of the taskbar up pops a box with the header 'Owner'. Below that is a selection of icons which are there to enable easy access. But I'm sure you all know that. Problem is, I would like to delete one of the folder icons. I've deleted everything in the folder and deleted the folder itself from 'My Documents' but the folder icon still persists in the window which appears when I click 'Start'. Anyone ?

Hi, started having this problem after the Window 10 upgrade, and even after I wiped the drive and installed W10 clean.

With several apps open, when I click an app icon on the task bar, the app does not come to top. Perhaps after repeated clicks it will surface, but often I have to manually minimize windows until I find the app I'm looking for.

I've got current video drivers, mouse drivers, and Window 10 is up to date.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? Any solutions?

Thanks!

Hello

I recently upgraded my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. It's working fine despite it has a few small issues that bearly bother me. Except one.

Whenever I press the icon of Dota 2 BSoD suddenly appears, my computer restarts after a decade and this happends over and over if I press this icon again.

The first time those crashes appeared I turned off my computer and after a day or two I managed to play this game without the problem. However, today I was in the game for 5 minutes and I was talking on my desktop Skype and suddenly my computer turned itself off. Even without BSoD. The screen turned black and it restarted after a long time and when I tried to enter the game again, those crashes were back.

Please, I have no knowledge in computer maintaining and fixing or anything related to computers (shamefull, but true). Is it because of the new OS? Can I please get some help?

Thanks!

Answer:BSOD when clicking on Dota 2 icon

I'm not really sure if it's relevant and if it justifies another post in this thread but BSoD appeared again, with no reason when he entered Maplestory. When he pressed the game icon and the game was updating he told me that after 10 minutes of loading "that" (BSoD) happend.

I hope this additional info about the kinda similliar case can help you understand more the problem. Again, thanks! Attachment 30509

When I click on an icon on my desktop, or even an .avi file in another folder, the file name gets highlighted (like I was going to change the name of the icon, for example).  Even when I click on the desktop away from the icon, the icon stays highlighted.  How do I stop this?

Answer:Icon stays highlighted even after clicking somewhere else

Are you clicking away from a clear area of your desktop? Do this happen on all desktop icons or on a specific one? How about double-clicking? Refresh your monitor frequently.

Hello.

I have recently clean installed Windows 10 CU. I am testing Windows 10 in a dual boot scenario with my Windows 7 installation. I have done about a dozen installs but this is the first time this problem has occurred.

The Network Icon shows up in the system tray.
If I hover over it I can see "Internet Access".
If I right Click it I get two options: Troubleshoot Problems and Open Network and Sharing Center.
If I left click it nothing happens. I don't see the list of known networks.

I have access to my home network and the Internet - no issues there - I just can't get the list of networks when I left click the icon.

I've tried disabling/enabling it. Damned if I can figure out why this is happening.

I'm using classic shell for my start menu, but I've been using that on all tests and this problem did not present on any of the other times I did a clean install.

It's not my security software - I haven't gotten that far. At present I've got office, a few authoring programs, Macrium reflect and OpenVPN installed.

I don't know if the is specific to Windows 10 as I've seen a couple of posts on google about the same issue on Windows 7, but none with solutions.

Just as a test, does this work? In settings? To see if it will display at all. Maybe clicking it a few times will clear some cobwebs. Just a S.W.A.G.

I am using opera and loving it, but I'm really irritated by some of its default actions.

One of them is that it's new tab and new background tab hotkeys are opposite firefox's. I can live with that, but I'd like to solve it.

It's really annoying though, that when I double click my desktop icon, it opens a new TAB instead of a new window. To get a new window, it seems my only option is to move to an existing Opera window, hit new window, and then minimize the first window.

Does anyone know how to modify this behaviour or to just append something to the command line like "-newwindow" ?

I'd really like to know,
Will

How does one go about turning off a Windows login screen?
I want my PC to boot straight into Windows (no login).
I know it's an Windows update that did it, but how do you revert back to an instant login?

When I hit my power button, I want to come back to a fully booted PC.
I don't want to wait for all my app's to open after I click on my user icon.
What Windows 'Hotfix' do I need to delete?
Can any one please give me the regestry value to change, or a simple fix.

I've searched google, but I cannot seem to find the right links.
i.e.:
windows xp logon
windows xp login
change longin xp
instant login xp
bypass logon xp
blah blah blah blah blah

Answer:Logon Windows without clicking a icon?

This should do it:

1) Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.

2) Type in the following:

control userpasswords2

now click OK

3) In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the primary logon.

Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.

4) Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected users password.

Click OK when you are done!

And that is it!

The changes will work the next time you restart your computer.

Recently I went through the malware removal process, and then installed AdvancedSystemCare v5.2.0 PRO. I am not sure if this is a result, but now there is a longer delay after clicking on a program icon. I have set ASCPro to work automatically. I can hear the hard drive constantly chugging through stuff in the background. Does this slow down my computer? Prior to this the response time after clicking was quite fast, but now it seems definitely slower. I looked at the task manager, but didn't really know what to look for.
I have attached an ASC Diagnostic report, if that's a help.
Please keep suggestions simple, as I'm fairly basic with computers.
Thanks.

Hi all, my daughter is running a dual boot of W98se and XP home, she has heard 'clicking' noises from inside the tower and cannot boot either OS, as it just keeps going around and around and only gets the 'welcome' screen for her to select which OS she wants, she can't even start it in 'safe mode' so she can't back up anything, I have told her it sounds as if the HD has packed up. Is there anything else she could try before putting it out to pasture as it is getting a little old now. Thanks P.

No need to wait for or use the "Get Windows 10" update, just follow these directions. It tells you how to use the Media Creation Tol from Microsoft to download and do a upgrade install of Windows 10: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation

The icon is hard to make out, it almost looks like a baseball or a round metal shield with a red M on it. If I hover my mouse over it, or left or right click on it, it does nothing. I went through all my program files, do not see anything different. I run WinME and when I click start I don't see any new programs at the top nor over to the right when I go to programs. I ran a hijack this and didn't see anything unusual and also booted up the computer by step by step confirmation and didn't see anything unusual. I've searched almost all my files in Program files and Windows and do not see this icon anwhere else but in my systray! It comes up after my printer icon and before my AVG shield and ZoneAlarm icon. I've searched your forum under unknown icons and can't find anything. It scares me that it won't let me do a dang thing when trying to click on it! I also ran a hjt start-up list and didn't see anything unusual but I'm not an expert for sure. PLEASE help me if you can, it's making me really nervous!
Thank you!

My Satellite Pro M70-220 laptop is running on Win XP Pro SP3, fully updated.

When I right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the Desktop, the arrow-head pointer changes to an "hourglass pointer", and everything on the screen becomes unresponsive i.e basically the screen feezes. When I click on the "turnoff" option in the "shutdown" drop-down list of Windows Task Manager, an "End Now" box pops-up, and indicates that Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) is being shutdown, and to click on the "End Now" button to end the program immediately, but warning that any unsaved data will be lost (or something to that effect). The computer shutsdown, and after I reboot the problem may or may not occur again.

There does not seem be a problem when I use Windows Explorer to select, explore and navigate the hard drive's 4 partions to acces folders and files. Its only seems to occur when I right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.

Would appreciate if anyone could advise why this is happening and on how to resolve it.

Thank you

Answer:Screen Freezes on Right-Clicking My Computer icon

I'm no expert.

I am assuming XP Pro is little different from XP Home for problem solving.

Had the same problem on Windows XP Home SP3 last week, then it went to BSOD.

Reboot gave a message indicating a missing or corrupted CONFIG file.

Running chkdsk /r from the recovery console found and fixed errors and
allowed access to safe mode, enabling me to use system restore.
Working happily ever since.

Unless you've already tried the most obvious methods, perhaps chkdsk could help.

When I click an icon on the taskbar, then the corresponding application window is not moved to the front of the screen. The taskbar icon flashes for a few seconds and then remains highlighted ,as if it is waiting to be moved to the front. When I want to see a window, I am now forced to minimize all other applications that are in front of it. I haven't been able to figure out the exact pattern of the problem, since sometimes the icons do respond by moving to front. The rest of my machine seems to working fine. I have performed an "sfc /scannow" command, but that gave no results. I have tried to reboot the machine and to restart the explorer.exe. I have checked for programs clogging up the cpu resources but the cpu is hardly used. There is also enough memory left on the machine.

Another sympton is that the taskbar icons on the right do not respond well, their menu's may 'hang' (they stay visible after being used), or the menu does not appear at all after right clicking.

I am runnning windows 7 on a HP Pavilion dv7 notebook.

Answer:Clicking taskbar icon does not cause move-to-front

Try a repair install. sfc /scannow cannot catch everything, so hopefully the repair will.

Hi guys,

Here's a goofy problem that's eventually happened to me on every Windows 7 install I've done. Has it happened to you?:

You want to connect to a wireless network, so you click the "network" icon in the system tray. But nothing happens; the usual network list doesn't appear. To see the menu, you have to open the Network and Sharing Center and click "Connect to a network". You must now do this each time?to connect or disconnect.

I realize this is more like basic Windows functionality than actual network stuff?but any idea what causes it, and how to fix it? Thanks, Ander

Answer:No pop-up when clicking system tray network icon?

No one could answer this? The same thing has happened to me, with every Windows 7 install I've done. No fix available?

this is for winxp.

Sometimes when I right click on one of the drives (c: or d: from "my computer) the desktop freezes up then I get an error message. It doesn't bluescreen me, but it gives me the error message and "resets" the desktop.

Weird thing is that I can get to the disk properties through the admin tools on the control panel just fine. I only have the crashing when I right click on a disk icon through "my computer".

I did the usual (scan for viruses, spyware, etc.) with no luck. The fact that it only happens sometimes makes it even weirder. The hard drives act normally all other times, so I don't think it's a failing hard drive.

I also reinstalled the 4-1 VIA drivers, hoping it would be the ide drivers, with no luck.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Answer:right clicking on a disk icon causes windows to crash?

The error message would be helpful.
Is it the "Explorer has encountered an error and needs to be shutdown" message, or something different?
Also, do you have any network drives? A little more info would help.

I have windows XP as an operating system, and for some reason, I just recently started having problems accessing files under the my computer icon. It started about the same time that I updated to the new Microsoft Explorer 8 but I can't be sure.   When I click on the My Computer icon, the little hourglass comes up, for a few seconds, but nothing further happens. I thought if I waited a while, it may just come up on it's own, but I have left it for over an hour, and still nothing. If I try to click on anything else while this is going on, the computer stops responding. The arrow for the mouse still moves, but I can't click anything and make it happen. I have AVG antivirus and I have found that sometimes it will say that the virus definitions are out of date, even though I just finished updating them. I have also tried to go through the back door if you will and access files such as my documents through the search mode, but the result is still the same. I have restarted my computer with the last known working copy of XP and that has resolved the problem for an hour or so, but then it returns. I do have the AVG antivirus and have run it many times suspecting a virus, but it shows no problems. On the times that I have had to shut down the computer without using the start button, (because it wouldn't let me access it) the shutdown process begins, and then it says that the explorer program is not resopnding, and asks if I want to end it. Is it possible to start multiple programmes from clicking one icon? The reason I want to do this is that my startup is being slowed down because internet related programmes (prevyx & zonealarm) seem to be stalling my PC's startup!I dont need either of these programmes running unless I am connected to the net so would probably rather not have them running until I needed them.Would it be possible to have both these programmes start automatically when I click to connect to the internet?Even if it is possible could doing this cause any problems?I know the easy option would be to start them all seperately each time I went on the net but I probably couldn't rely on wife / children doing that.Cheers

Answer:Maximizing window when clicking on desktop icon

Welcome to Seven Forums thebunns. If you mean you want to click on the Internet Explorer icon and have IE open as a normal window, then do this.

Right click the IE icon and click on Properties. On the shortcut tab click on the drop down next to Run: and choose Normal Window. Click Apply, then OK. It should now open as a normal window. You can also choose Maximized if indeed that is really what you want.

Sometimes, very randomly, when I right click in Explorer, or I cut something to paste it elsewhere, I get this little popup window with an error in it. It says "Error" as a title and "Failed to load resource dll." with "OK" as the only option. When I do click "ok" the right click dialog appears, or the files I meant to cut act the way they're supposed to, so the error isn't exactly reporting anything FAILING...

I searched the web for the solution to this strange, yet annoying bug, but to no avail. The only matches I get are mostly with people getting the dll error specifying a file. My error doesn't do that.

I also found this from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q189001/

But they say it has to do with a certain third party software I don't have installed, and the fix only applies to windows 95 or 98 anyway.

I'm currently using windows xp professional with service pack 1, with all the available updates (except sp2, that's just evil)

Has anyone heard of this error before?

Thanks

Answer:Failed to load resource dll upon right clicking

Does it matter how large the data you are cutting and pasting ? Does it happen every time ?

Might as well be a malware situation. I would do some online scanning.

try to run sfc /scannow also.

My computer is an HP pavilion dv7 1260us and I'm using windows vista 64 bit. Today my computer froze while running a complete scan using AVG free edition. I turned off the laptop using the power button and ever since then, my desktop keeps freezing up Ina way. Any time i click on an icon or the start menu after the desktop has loaded, the mouse icon turns into the busy symbol. The task manager won't open either after I press ctrl +alt + del. I have tried restarting my computer in safe mode and running the avg scan again but that either causes the computer to overheat and shut down or the computer freezes up halfway through the scan. I ran chkdsk once which took about 5 hours to complete and I am still having problems. The only thing I have downloaded/updated recently has been ccleaner which I did earlier in the day. Could having this program along with AVG be causing my computer to freeze up? I've had both these programs on my computer for about a year without any problems.

Hi,

The problem I am about to explain deals with only one piece of software that has me and the company that owns or publishes this software asking whats going here. The software is called Natural Soft/NaturalReader7. It is a piece of software that you can type a text message into it, or have it read a text message, and inturn the Text To Voice voices read the text. In my AMD machine I have no problem with this software or the voices working. In this Via or Intel machine (P4X400-8235), as soon as I click on the Icon, the monitor turns black and then the software comes up, but all the pixels look bad on software and the desktop of this computer until I hit the esc key and then it will switch back to the desktop closing the program automatically. Sometimes I have to go all the way out to rebooting the computer before the desktop pixels looks normal. In all the years that I have been around computers I have never seen anything like this, nor has the software company. I have tried many installs and re-installs as per the software comany requests. The event that I just descripted happens each and every time I try to use this software in this machine. I have changed out the video cards to other video cards and nothing seams to change the out come once I have clicked on the NaturalReader 7 Icon. I'm using Windows Vista updated within the past 4-5 days.

A couple of days ago AVGFree stopped a virus (it indicated the name was not known) from downloading to my computer. It moved it to the vault and strongly recommended I reboot to remove all traces of the virus. I did so but experienced a problem on the reboot. When the desktop appeared everything was placed where it was supposed to be with some exceptions.

1. The sidebar and all gadgets did not appear.
2. Not all of the icons in the task bar appeared.
3. When clicking on any icons a window opens and asks 'Open with'

I was able to run a virus scan with only two trojans appearing in the sun\java folder (fakeAV). Both files were removed by AVGFree. I rebooted and the same happens.

I tried running System Restore a couple of times and received a message that there were no restore points. On the 4th or 5th attempt there was a restore point, I used it with no difference.

I also tried using the Startup Repair utility with no problems showing.
Could it be possible that when AVGFree removed the virus it also removed some important files that Windows needs to finish the startup process? Or is there something more insidious going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

They are called Jump Lists, start by checking this:

Right click on start orb and click on Properties. Click on Start Menu tab, and see if the box below is checked.

Mail and my yahoo mail account had been working fine. Then I had a message saying my yahoo mail needed updating. I made attempts to do so although nothing had changed in my account info. Somehow during these attempts I lost ability to call up the mail via clicking on icon on task bar, or on the mail tile.

This applies to both my computers (XP and Vista systems) and other computers.

The problem: The external hard drive mounts, but clicking on the icon results in the following error message window:

Windows cannot find 'TeOutIj.exE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

This happens when clicking on the hard drive icon only. After clearing the error message, I right click on the hard drive icon, select 'open' and the hard drive contents are then displayed (as should have happened by clicking on the hard drive icon). Interior folders can be clicked on and will open.

I have five external drives and three of them developed this condition. I removed all information from one of the drives and re-formatted it. This did not clear the condition. Meanwhile, another of the drives began to issue error messages about lost data and has become un-recognizable to the systems.

I feel that this is the result of some malware or virus, but so far haven't been able to identify or cure it.

This has got under my skin as I regard putting data and valuable information onto external hard drives as one of my primary computer security options.

I have an old lenovo y500 ideapad laptop. It has windows vista os. Some days before i opened (booted) the pc, and after starting when i clicked on one of the shortcuts, it opened up the properties box. When i right clicked the shortcut menu disappeared before i could click on something. All the alphabet and number keys on keyboard don't work. The shortcut menu problem ends up after a while but the keyboard still does not work. After operating the computer for more than 5 hours or so it becomes normal but on rebooting the same problem occurs. Even once it didn't shut down so i did it by pressing and holding for a few seconds. I can't format the computer, it has lot of data. I tried antivirus but the space in c drive is very small. The computer has not been connected to internet for about 2-3 years. When it became normal once after operating somehow for a long time i opened it into safe mode by typing msconfig in search box in start menu. The same problem occured in safe mode. It now doesn't come to normal and i can't even view the photos.

I'm posting this question for my brother who is a computer-noob.
Somehow his laptop running XP seems to have been infected by a virus, although Norman AV does not find a virus.
Problem: everytime he doubleclicks on an icon this seems to be interpreted as a delete command. He gets a question "Do you really want to move this file/shortcut to the recycle bin" Answering No does not close the window. This also happens when he opens outlook (via mouse-menu open option) on downloades messages, double click within outlook on a message deletes the message instead of opening it.
Does anybody know a virus that can cause this behaviour?

Answer:double clicking an icon every time tries to delete file/shortcut

If he has an infected system...he needs to consider posting here at BC, in the appropriate malware forum.BleepingComputer.com - Am I infected What do I do - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html That's the best advice I can think of for a known infected system.Louis

I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm using the program Expressit 3.1 to create my CD labels.

I downloaded it from here:
exPressit SE - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Now, the files it creates, of which I have several made using its previous version, 3.0, are suffixed .exp. I have set my Win7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program.

However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine. (The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).

So, is there some sort of setting I have missed out that prevents the program running when I double-click the .exp file icons? Or is there a tweak I can use?

Answer:Running a default program by double-clicking file icon

When you selecz the default program use the browse button to locate any other .exe files in the expressit directory, and see if it works.
I can be the problem, that the .exe that you have associated the file extensio with is just an app laucnher exe and not the main software, which can hadle the files.

Using a keyboard shortcut for an application (Right-Click>Properties>Shortcut key) takes a few seconds for the application to start loading (i.e. it's not the application that is taking a few seconds to load, more like it's taking a while to register the keyboard shortcut to begin the application), where as double clicking on the .exe opens the application straight away.

This has only occured since the upgrade to Windows 10, in Windows 7 the keyboard shortcuts started the application straight away.

This isn't a showstopping issue, just wondering whether anyone else has noticed a similar issue.
I can't list the PC specs as this is a colleages PC, I do know that it is a Dell Precision T1700.

I have Word and Excel pinned to the taskbar. In Windows 8.1, right-clicking always showed recent (and open) files - so that I can pin them to my "pinned" list which appears above "recent".
In Windows 10, recent and open (!) files do not always appear in the right-clicked list.
(Interestingly, if I open a file from the cloud/OneDrive, the file name does - at least sometimes - appear in the right-click list. But I don't want to pin that one obviously - it's very slow.)

Just recently, I cannot bring a task to the foreground by clicking it's icon in the taskbar. This used to work really well. Now if I click the icon, it flashes orange, but nothing else happens. This seems to happens with all windows.. file lists, openoffice shreadsheets, opera browser.. but .. mozilla seems to work fine, so maybe this is related to a mozilla setting ? I am running mozilla ESR 17.0.6 (downloaded from my company's approved application site). Also, in the past week I tried using an external projector to display on a conference room, could that be related ? I have windows7 professional, and pretty much up to date with fixes due to my company's pushing on/installing fixes automatically. Any help would be appreciated, this is quite annoying.
Thanks !

The problem is he could not open Internet Explorer by double clicking the desktop icon, but he can right click and click open without a problem. Other Icons function with no problem. I tried replacing the icon, I ran Malwarebytes and found nothing, I also ran scannow but none of this helped. Can anyone help.

Pity you didn't let us know that IE opens when doube clicking iexplore.exe before giving up because that proved that IE itself was fine. It aslo proved, as you rightly said, that this was a problem with the function of the icons. Hey guys,

This is driving me insane. I don't know why it's happening or if it's simply no big deal and I'm going paranoid!

Anyways, when I right-click on desktop, the menu takes 5 seconds (1 Mississippi...2 Mississippi...etc.) to show up..

Is that normal?

I'm mainly asking to see if there is a bigger problem behind this and not so much the little problem of this taking too long to load. So the emphasis is on the former (the possibility of this being a bigger problem).

I recently installed the latest drivers for my GPUs.

Has anyone else experienced slow-to-load web pages being helped to load by left-clicking?

I have a handful of websites that I frequent which are always slow to load. I have noticed that if I left-click the mouse on the last web page the hour glass will show up and the loading takes place a little faster. I have no idea why left-clicking the mouse would help...or what left-clicking the mouse actually does that allows the web page to start loading. I find this rather strange.

Here is an example of a web page that is always slow to load and is aided to load quicker if I left-click somewhere on the last web page as I wait.

Any ideas?

I have been having some problems with my work PC. I noticed one day my internet explorer 8 and Firefox was running very slow. I tried loging on to my ebay account and it asked me many personal questions. It asks for my name, address, social security number, credit number, atm with pin #, etc. I knew something was wrong so I began running a virus scan (malwarebytes current ver). That did not find any malware. I also ran ComboFix and Spybot. Finally today internet explorer is working properly but when I right click on an icon on the desktop it will get a window trying to load Symantec Antivirus. I don't know if the internet problem is linked to this new problem or not. I already have the antivirus loaded and it seems to be working properly. I have attached a screen shot of the installer windows. I don't know if the Hijackthis log file is needed.

Answer:Right clicking on desktop icons will result in pc trying to load Symantec

Your Symantec Corporate Edition antivirus is trying to repair itself most likely. It seems that you are on a network possibly with an Administrator. I would contact them for help finding the installer so y our antivirus can be repaired. If you do not have an Admin or this is your network, then I would suggest looking in the location referred to in your first screen shot and find out what happened to the MSI installer for Symantec Antivirus.I would also suggest scanning your computer once again with Malwarebytes ( after updating it ) and also Superantispyware. Scan for Spyware/AdwareThe process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version and save it to your desktop.NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program wi... Problem: In my computer folder I doubleclick on the (C hard drive, but it doesn't open like a folder but as a search tool. I have to right click and choose open from the menu to "open like a folder".

Why is this: I accidentally was doing something weird in the control panel>folder properties(not sure if its called folder properties in the english xp).

And now I would want it again to open like a folder, but I just don't know how.

I posted this at MozillaZine forums:

It's something else. I have to tell you.

I click on Firefox and the window opens up to my homepage and THEN a "adsolutions" popup comes up that has an IE icon by the description.

Here is what I've already tried:

- Scanning for spyware with Adaware SE
- Changing the homepage to google
- Creating another launch icon for Firefox

I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox because I know that it probably wouldn't help. I'm stuck and I am NOT going back to IE because it would only get worse.

Would someone kindly point me in the right direction? I'll try anything short of a reinstall or using sledgehammers.Click to expand...

Since that post I have tried the following:

- Cleared Java cache
- added google toolbar to IE (I don't know why I thought this would work but I was running out of options

Did a clean reinstall format on my computer today.
Installed some garbage on it and even system restore didn't help, so fresh install.
Now before when i would hit my desktop after logging in, i was able to open my internet logon icon and BOOM i'd be ready to go, now for some reason it takes about 12-15 seconds before it actually opens.
I have very little showing up in MS' Antispyware tools area controlling the "startup programs" and to double check, i looked at msconfig and there wasn't much there.
Any ideas?
Could it have been the order in which I installed the programs, after the clean format/reinstall?
Even cleaned out the prefetch folder, and still nothing. My Primary Master is my C: HD, which is the first to boot, then the DVD burner.
So I'm lost, anyone got any ideas?

I am using Intel i3-530 on Intel DH55TC Motherboard. The motherboard supports RAM with highest frequency of 1333MHz. However, I was told that using a higher speed RAM wouldn't hurt the system. So, today I bought a Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz RAM. The RAM is detected in BIOS, but OSes fail to boot after that. Even Ubuntu throws Kernel panic error while booting. Could anyone help me with the BIOS settings required to run this memory stick?

Answer:OS fails to load when using new RAM

Hello Mycroft mate as a general rule running a higher frequency RAM stick in a machine that runs that only supports the lower one the frequency will revert to the frequency of the new stick will be maxed to what frequency your machine will support. So I think whoever told you could run a higher frequency RAM stick in the machine should have known better and to get you to check out the supported RAM speed before you went out and got the new RAM.
If possible I would get the supplier to change it for 1333 (there really isn't much to be gained from 1600) and the extra RAM will still make a difference to your machine simply because the system has more to use and therefore less bottle knecking - in other words the CPU can load more faster if it has more empty RAM available.

ie Tip a bucket of water through a 1 inch outlet funnel into another bucket and it fills quite nicely in say 5 minutes - now take a funnel with a 10 inch outlet and the second bucket fills in no time at all - the first bucket is the CPU and the second bucket the RAM the difference being there is more channels for the data to flow through even though it might be the slower speed RAM

You can see from this Intel? Desktop Board DH55TC the board only supports 1333 max - you can install a faster RAM stick but why bother?

So for example the 1600 you have put in should only run at 1333 if the machine specs say max 1333. The other problem could be that the new RAM stick is bad.

To see about RAM this might gi... Read more

Hello. I have Red Hat Linux and Windows XP on different partitions on my Dell. I went to login to Windows the other day, and after I selected Windows it gave me a black screen saying windows failed to load. It had options of starting in safe mode, starting from last known configuration or starting normally. Regardless of what you press, the Windows XP screen comes up like its loading, then after a few second it goes to a blue screen saying unmountable_boot_volume. It says to remove any hardware that I recently added, but I haven't added anything. My sister had been using the computer while I was gone, and I don't know what to do now. Any ideas? Thanks.
