erratic mouse

Question: erratic mouse

erratic mouse I have an H-P desktop running W 7 (64) which is a little over a year old. As of today my Microsoft optical mouse has gone all flaky on me. It moves jerkily and if I happen to get it to a place I want it and click, nothing happens. I can't get the Start menu to open. I have
1. changed the batteries
2. changed the USB port
3. unplugged it and installed a wired mouse
4. rebooted
5. hit the reset button on the optical receiver

and nothing has changed. I have read all the previous questions and answers on this topic and I don't know where to go from here. It doesn't seem to me that a new mouse is the answer or the wired mouse should have worked. If it is a software problem, I don't know how to get to anything. I surely would appreciate some help on this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.

A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue. Also when I wiped and reloaded Windows I used the HP Recovery partition and ran thei... Read more

Question: R50 erratic mouse

I just "Cleaned up" (registry repairs, etc.) my R50, and now the mouse cursor does not follow my mouse in real time, but runs all over the place when there is any significant disk activity. Does anybody know of a cure for this? I uppose it is related to the priority of pointer input interrupts vs. HDD interrupts vs. display update interrupts, but I have no idea where to start finding these priority levels, or how to change them. Please help. Kron.

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi
Ive just joined this forum and would welcome some help please.
My mouse jumps all over the screen, opens up programmes and drop down boxes on the desktop without me even touchin it, sometimes the pointer disappears totally. I can sometimes cure this by ctrl/alt/del and then just close the task mgr box, other times I have to reboot. I'm positive this is not a hardware problem, but a virus type thing. I've actually changed the mouse and no difference. I did have the same problem some time ago, got help from another forum, had to run various programmes, including Hijack, posted logs etc and after deleting files as advised, the problem was solved. Unfortunately the person who helped is no longer on that forum, and nobody else seems able to help. I run XP, semperon 3000, 1 gig ram.
Any help gratefully accepted !!!!

Question: USB mouse erratic

Hello forum, it's my first post. First of all, I've tried multiple mice, this one is a brand new Logitech, works fine on the other computer. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it is very erratic. I've turned off some of the default touchpad drivers and it helped a little, and I've gone into add/remove programs and msconfig to delete or turn off possibly conflicting processes. Is there any way I can prioritize my mouse above other processes? It almost makes me want to get a different computer, which is a Dell Inspiron. The Intel Core i5 processor was a huge let down; I thought it would be much better, and this mouse issue makes me want to throw the computer in the trash.

Answer:USB mouse erratic

There are a variety of possible solutions for this issue.1. Have you tried another usb port?2.Do you have the latest mouse driver?3.Is there a battery in your mouse if so is it in good condition?4. Have you gone to the system tray on your Inspiron and disabled the touch-pad  function?truenorth

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi.

I've got a mouse problem that has developed independently on two different computers, one Win98, the other Win ME.

The mouse works OK when it is moved slowly, but behaves erratically when moved quickly. For example, if the pointer is in the middle of the screen and the mouse is moved quickly to the left, then the pointer will typically move crazily about in the middle third of the screen and usually end up on the right.

Drivers and mice have both been changed to no effect. The ME computer now has an optical mouse, so it can't be a mechanical problem.

The Win98 mouse is on COM1, the ME mouse is a PS/2.

I've fiddled about endlessly with the port settings on the Win98, changed ports etc. No effect whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Regards,
psmyth

Answer:Erratic mouse

I am not sure this will help, but it is something to look at.

You didn't specify the mouse brand, but usually most come with software to adjust the mouse.

What you want to do is look for the mouse speed and acceleration. Be sure the speed is set to medium...and that acceleration is set to low. It sounds like the acceleration may be set too fast, causing the mouse to act erratically

Hope that is helpful

Question: Erratic mouse

I installed Windows 10 on day one or two of the upgrade and have been using it since on my Toshiba 64 bit laptop. It was an upgrade from 8.1. A note that this laptop is a touch screen that I cracked, disabling the touch function a year or so ago. No problems on Windows 8.

I use Chrome as my browser and initially could not open any tabs on Chrome. That quickly resolved with some uninstalls and reinstalls I think, but no longer an issue.

From the beginning however I've had problems with what I call "erratic mouse". I've been looking but have not seen others id this as a problem. It was a frequent problem in the beginning but seems to be resolving, maybe?

It is an all of a sudden problem. The mouse will not stay where it is. It jumps to the top of the screen and starts clicking on other tabs or, seems to right click on the url setting up boundaries with big tear drops then bringing up cut and paste windows. Difficult to explain what is going on. This has happened on many occasions. The mouse continues these activities (on it's own). The more I try to interfere, the worse it gets. Answer:Erratic mouse

I'm replying to my own post to update it and to document for later reference what is going on. Since I've had no replies on my original post, I assume this is an original problem.

On 8/18, the "erratic mouse" happened again on a couple of occasions. I can confirm that the "Windows Button" does NOT resolve the problems as I originally thought, I needed to unplug the laptop to reboot it a couple of times. I also think I can cause the problem to repeat. When I shut the lid to put the laptop to sleep, the failure occurs within a couple of minutes of bringing awake. I was able to repeat it 3X already.

Trying to explain the erratic mouse a little better .... as I said earlier, the mouse starts doing it's own thing. Many time it "brackets" a section of text in the URL on a web page with what I will call "bubble sliders". They look like bubble type markers with points on the top that delineate a section of text to copy or cut. After the delineation occurs, a small rectangular box appears with grids containing copy, cut and paste sections to click. I have never seen anything like it in any application or app. Other things and clicks occur also, just cannot get control of the machine back needing to power down.

I also looked in the event log log for items around the time of failure and am seeing nothing giving me any clues.

Question: Erratic mouse?

Intermittently, mouse pointer disappears, but drops to quick launch toolbar and opens every program that invisible pointer sits on. Invisible pointer moves left to right as mouse is moved opening all programs it passes over. Programs are opened more than once. Alt/ctrl/del to open task manager stops error most times. Rundll32.exe has been running on the times it didn't stop. Rundll32.exe checked ok for errors & viruses etc.
No viruses. Registry checked ok. Can anyone help please. This is most frustrating and can last 2 - 3 minutes.

Question: erratic mouse

Just after start up my mouse becomes erratic with a mind of its own. It clicks on things opening and highlighting everything it touches. It becomes totally unworkable and I have to close down and reboot. Often it is still the same when I start up again. I have been told by one department at microsoft that it is a microsoft problem but they want me to pay to sort it. Is there anything I can do myself. Would appreciate some help with this annoying problem. Thankyou

Answer:erratic mouse

I would only guess one of a few things could cause that. Try a restore point to a time when it worked maybe for the first try. See help and support for restore point. It should allow you to go back in time when the mouse did work. I guess you could get a new mouse too and try it.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. Recently both my Wireless Mouse and my ordinary Mouse are behaving rather erratically, there is no apparent reason for this.I did try Restoring ro an earier date, and this did work for a short time, but it has had a relapse. Can anyone advise a cause of action.Trilby2

Answer:Erratic Mouse

When a wireless mouse starts getting erratic,it is usually a low battery problem. Best to use rechargables, if you haven't already done so.Erratic movements can also be caused by 'fluff' etc on the ball rollers. Unscrew bottom of mouse cover, remove ball and clean.

Question: Very erratic mouse

Ok well I just finished reading all of the mouse threads I could and nothing seems to help my problem. This happens when I am on the internet usually, but it will occasionally happen off of it also. The mouse will sometimes lag for a moment when I am moving it around. It just stops then goes again, kind of like its stalling. Occasionally this will happen 3 or 4 times in a row. Also from time to time it will not recover from this lag and freezes totally. When this happens I am sometimes able to use my keyboard to restart normally. Other times the keyboard dies too. Mouse movement is erratic and jumpy, often times skipping to the sides of the screen in arbitrary directions. When not jumping around, the mouse moves normally and controllably.

Am using the first version of Vista.
Currently using a Logitech optical mouse.

Tried with and without a mouse pad. It made no difference.

Hello FoSho,

This is my first post to a reply on a forum so take it easy on me :)

From what I have researched from Microsoft Support and Help site that there have been issues with optical mouses not functioning properly in Windows Vista. You can refer to the Microsoft support article at this url:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932653/en-us

They do have a hotfix for it, but you have to submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix at:

Hope this helps!

Question: Erratic Mouse!!!

For two days now, the Trust Optical Wireless Mouse that I use has been playing up (I have an Acer Aspire 5105 laptop, and generally use this mouse rather than the built-in touchpad). This 'misbehaviour' seems to be limited to those occasions when I'm using Windows components, such as regedit, msconfig etc, and have to choose options from drop-down menus; I scroll down, release the mouse and the menu returns to the beginning, as if there were a spring there. Same thing when I use the bottom scroll bar; if I drag the bar towards the right with the mouse, when I let go of the mouse, the scroll bar returns to the left. I end up having to use the keyboard arrows or the touchpad to choose menu options. The only real change to my pc, apart from the usual Microsoft updates, has been the removal of Comodo Firewall and AVG antispy ware.Florio

Question: Erratic Mouse

I'm not sure what kind of issue this may be. I have tried replacing my mouse Marble Logitech with a new wireless Logitech one but the issue is still there.
While playing games on facebook the mouse pointer has shifted(you have to move the pointer around to slightly below or slightly to the side to click what you want-Some games I cannot even open because of this -Its also hard to close game windows since the "X" doesn't work where it should you have to move the mouse around and find the area that works to close it.I am using windowx XP and google Chrome as my browser.
Yesterday I posted on Major Geeks Facebook page and they told me this "Get SlimDrivers from our driver section and update your drivers. Odds are the USB drivers are out of date compared to the mice you are using." I did download it and it said the drivers was out of date I fixed it and rebooted and the issue remains .I posted on the wall 2x's but noone seems to be answering so I came here.
Hope you can guide me in the right direction

Answer:Erratic Mouse

HI

What Windows Service Pack is your XP at?
What is the exact model of your Logitech mouse? (generally the wireless mice form Logitech are called Wireless Mouse Mxxx where xxx is the model number)
Are you using a Desktop, Laptop, Netbook?

Have you uninstalled any software or driver that was installed for your old mouse? what I would do is uninstall all software and drivers linked to the mice and then reboot and install the latest mouse's drivers.

Reason I ask about laptop/netbook is maybe disable the touchpad.

What surface are you using the mouse on, try a different surface to what you are using now, different mouse mat, or a dull none shiny surface.

Everything was fine until this morning. When I fired up my laptop running XP, my mouse was behaving badly. It now double clicks on its own, refuses to move windows, and fails to drag anything including text and files. I am a massive halo fanatic and my itch to play will soon turn into a full blown psychotic episode if I can't fix it soon!! So for my comps sake (not to mention the unfortunate people around me) please help!

So far I have ran every antivirus and spyware check possible. I have even uninstalled the mouse driver to no avail. Im running XP Pro so it automatically reinstalled it for me on reboot. I have also tried scolding my naughty little mouse. I even raised my hand in an attempt to horrify it but it merely sat there unflinching! Well anyways I tried the mouse on my sisters comp and it works fine. The only thing that I did out of the ordinary last night was defrag my system before I went to bed! I cant think of any other solutions so anything anyone might suggest could help! Thank you!

Question: Erratic Mouse Pad?

Every now and then my mouse pad begins clicking erratically when just trying to move the mouse elsewhere on the screen.Perhaps it's due to sweaty fingers or what not, but I've tried changing the mouse's pressure sensitivity and found it to not really solve the problem. To diagnose the problem, I've simply just shut down the laptop and turned it back on and wiped off my fingers. However, why is this a problem to begin with? Is it because oils from the skin are left on the pad and causing deviations in pressure when I have my finger on it?Thanks

actually a trackball, Microsoft Explorer 1.0 that is. Running on Win2k, SP4, Dell Precision 360 PC, usb converted to PS2 connection.

I have gone thru the Spyware Trojan Removal process at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 thru step 4. HAve not completed Step 5, did run Hijack This and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Ran Bitdefender, ADS Spy, adn maybe another from the list after Step 6. No issues. Windows Update has been run, but am wary of removing MS Java since a work product definitely uses JAVA and I don't want to break it.

Problem is: the mouse (trackball), at times, jerks around, even gets stuck in a spot, but then eventually recovers. Acts as if something is so taking up the CPU time that there's no extra for the mouse to use/move.

I had this problem a few months ago and was sure I had some nasty infection, so I used it as a motivator to rebuild the system from scratch (SW). Even wiped the boot sector (cause a rebuild w/out that step had the same problem show up). WOrked for a while, and now, it's baa-ack.

Hello!

Ok....Windows 7 Ultimate....mouse cursor goes where it wants to when started normally.

I have tried everything from several different mice (meeces!) including one with an old trackball and ones that are either wired or wireless.

Sometimes if I just leave it alone for a bit it will come back to normal for a brief period of time but then will start malfunctioning again.

It almost seems like it is actually a physical problem as sometimes I can tip my old d620 and the cursor will slide back down into the screen. Also, SOMETIMES when I touch the bottom right of the screen the cursor works properly for a few seconds....same with the area directly under where your left hand would rest.....but these are VERY temporary fixes to what is a long term and frustrating issue.

No virus comes up during a check so................please help

Logitech "Marble" Ball works perfectly on both my computer and my wife's. Both using same mouse and Windows XP. We play many PC Games and have not had a mouse problem. Recently downloaded 3 games. No problem with first one but very erratic and jerky mouse on next 2. Happened on both computers. I have most recent drivers for NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT and using current Logitech drivers. In last instance, mouse seemed to be working ok and then progressively but rapidly got to the point where it was impossable to use. If I go to Windows with game running, mouse is erratic. Shut game down and all is well again.

Any help appreciated. We like the download site and hope we can make them work.

About a month ago my Microsoft wireless optical mouse 2000 started behaving erratically. When I would first turn on the computer, it would work fine for awhile and then start its tricks. I read solutions and first changed the batteries. Whoopee. problem solved - for perhaps a day - and then it was back. I then changed the USB port and same story. It worked fine for a day or so and then the same problem was back. I did not try it in another computer as I didn't have the time to wait to see if the fix was only temporary. I also cleaned the darn thing and got a different mouse pad. I ran internal problem solving and got a good report. I concluded that the mouse was just worn out so I bought a new mouse MS 5000 which again seemed to have solved the problem. Yes, you guessed it. This one is behaving erratically, too, but its behavior is somewhat different. This one is jumpy. I am presuming it is a software problem but I don't know where to turn. I have downloaded the TSG SysInfo but don't know how to add it to this post unless it is done automatically. In case, I am using an H-P desktop running W-7.

I am having the same problem on 2 hp dv7 laptops. One is dv7-4269wm the other isdv7-4272us. If a window has a scroll bar it automatically scrolls to the top or tab around the window. I've read other people having similar issues however there is no solution. Also it seems the mouse will freeze in spot and I have to hit the tab button to get it to move again. All drivers and all programs, including the Windows 7 OS (32-bit) are up to date on both machines.
Can somebody please help. This has basically left the machines unusable because regardless of what you want to do the machines do their own thing.
Also the system says the touchpad mouse, which is what I'm using and the keyboard drivers are working properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both drivers. When a wireless mouse is used the same things happen, and I was using just the wireless mouse while there was no touchpad driver installed.
Is it a keyboard problem? Are there alternative drivers to synaptics? I've ran troubleshooting tools within Windows and everything reports okay.

hi guys, hope u can help. my pc is acting up and despite replacing my ps2 mouse, the problem remains. basically when i've been on the pc surfing or reading office files, whatever. my mouse pointer developes a life of its own and brings up a multitude of window panes. the only way i have to deal with this is to shutdown power and reboot. i use win98se, a amd duron proc.; temp. during reboot is 85 degrees. defrag only poss. in safe mode, and thorough scandisk gives up after 10 attempts. any advice would be appreciated..cheers

Answer:erratic mouse & box displays

Hi, I am no expert but Temperature seems a bit high, check and make sure all fans are working fully and blades are clean. Open side of tower assuming it is a tower, and if you have a portable desk-type fan apply that too. Run Scandisk again, but do not do the thorough scan, just the ordinary scan. Once you have been able to do a scan you should then be able to do the defrag too. If you can get through all that then I would advise a full anti-virus scan and also a scan with Ad-Aware.Good luck.Cheers.

After I have used the computer for a while, my mouse changes behaviour. It requires that I do another click to deactivate whatever action it was doing.

For instance, when scrolling down a directory of photos, if I don't click before moving the cursor from the scroll bar to the photo icons, it will highlight all the photos it passes over...

Same kind of behaviour when I clone part of a photo in Photoscape. If I don't click after finishing the cloning, the cursor will hang on to the cloning brush and drag the cloning over everything it goes over, even the function buttons (undo, redo..) at the bottom of the screen.

Is there a way to avoid this?

My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad T520 with Windows7. Thank for for any input regarding this issue.

After logging in, as soon the desktop and my mouse appears, the mouse movement starts to be very slow. It respond a bit late and I get only 2-3 new mouse image (the position where the mouse is) per second. After some time everything goes back to normal. WHen at the logging screen, it goes well too. I don't think I changed something before it started to happen, but I could be wrong. It does it with both my wireless mouse the the synaptics touchpad one. I have a laptop. Finnaly I think it started to happen when I beginned to use it without the battery in when on AC. But I'm pretty sure I tried to boot it with the battery back in and it did't solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated since the only time I goes back on vista (from linux) is to play games and I don't want to wait for the mouse to be back to normal to play.

I have a 9 month old HP dm1, (Win7 / 3GB / AMD Fusion Processor), that is driving me crazy with it's erratic mouse behavior that I hope someone can help me with.

I have tried many different makes of wireless and even 2 different makes of BlueTooth mouses, I have tried it with the computer's touch pad turned off, as well as turned on. I have checked and installed all known updates to the system and the drivers. Scanned for apparent IQ conflicts and even signal interference. Yet, it continues to exhibit a "mind of it's own" regardless of which program is running. And yes, it does the same thing if no mouse is attached and I'm just trying to use the built in touchpad all by itself.

What happens is that the mouse pointer just randomly jumps to some totally random part of the screen, and begins entering my typing there. Or, it will randomly highlight a block of text, and as I continue to type, it erases what I had previously entered and over writes it with what I was in the process of adding. Or it opens up some menu, or even "click on" a link ! IT IS SO ANNOYING !

Any ideas what to do to stop this erratic behaviour ?

Thanks

I have been experiencing erratic mouse issues for the last couple months and feel like I've tried everything yet nothing fixes it. I've spent hours reading forums & blogs, googling etc and still the problem persists.
The mouse (movement AND scrolling) hesitates then jumps drastically across the screen. 70% of the time it's just annoying & bothersome but mostly functional, 20% it's non-functional and the other 10% it works fine. After switching mice numerous times, at this point I'm sure it's the computer, not a mouse issue.
I have an HP Pavilion desktop running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. My current mouse is a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000.

Here's what I've tried already, none of it has worked:Rebooted (numerous times, duh).Tried a different mouse (on my 4th mouse).Removed former mouse software.Removed & reinstalled and checked online for new drivers (Intellipoint 7.0 software).Tried different mouse settings including checking and unchecking "Hide Pointer While Typing" and "Display Pointer Trails".Bought a high quality mouse pad.Changed batteries.Cleaned lens/used canned air on lens.Tried different USB ports for the receiver.Tried Microsoft "Fit It" troubleshooter (Microsoft article 321122).Ran spyware/malware via my Microsoft security software, no issues found.Since this is a desktop, not laptop, it's not a touchpad issue.I've tried many other google tips found as well but can't remember all of it.If anyone knows what ... I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (bought from BestBuy) which I understand is identical to Thinkpad Yoga 460.  I have been using it for the last few weeks and everything was fine. In the past few days, the mouse has started behaving erratically.  Specifically: When I drag a window to move it, the mouse loses its grip half way through the motion, and then re-activates itself.  When it does that, the window I was moving stops, and the mouse clicks on (or selects) whatever happens to be below where the mouse cursor is at that moment. When I try to select some words or a paragraph in an editor, the mouse will reset itself and my selection gets reset.  I have try over and over again just to select some text (so I can do copy/paste, etc.).  Again, sometimes it will reactivate itself halpfway and select (or auto click on) random and unrelated stuff. Now, normally I am not moving the mouse very fast, or very slow.  I have varied the speed and movement but to no avail. I see this behavior with an external USB mouse (on different surrfaces), with the trackpad and trackpoint, as well as the touchscreen. It started recently and it is infuriating to say the least.  Lenovo Companion says everything is up to date and I haven't updated anything in the last couple of weeks. Has anyone seen this behavior?  I would be grateful for any recommendation to solve this issue. Thanks!

I have a wireless mouse that has a mind of its own. It is a Logitech Performance MX mouse. The mouse acts normally for a few minutes and then jumps all over the place, and it is frustrating and hard to control. Sometimes it even gets temporarily stuck in position. Then it seems to "snap to" and act normally. I replaced the mouse with a wireless Microsoft mouse, and exactly the same symptoms prevailed. I changed ports for the antenna. I reinstalled the Logitech mouse software and I brainstormed the issue via Google.

But the problem persists. It definitely appears to be an "internal" problem. Is there a system setting that could be affecting it, some interfering software, what? I had a similar problem a few years ago and it seemed to correct itself by itself and I never discovered what was causing the jumping and lagging.

Has anyone else experienced this mysterious erratic behavior? I would appreciate any suggestions to fix the issue.

About a week ago, my mouse, at random times will go crazy and open random things. The pointer will jump jump from one end of the screen in fractions of a second, too fast to see. It will also open various windows. When I try to move it again it continues on with the erratic movements. I can not figure out what is triggering this, or if I have some kind of virus. Usually I hit escape a couple of times and it goes back to normal. Any ideas?

Some weeks ago I asked for help on an erratic MicroSoft mouse and received helpful replies. After working for a short time after my last report the mouse became unusable. Since I had some work that had to be done, I went back to a wired mouse and keyboard. After catching up, I held my breath and tried the optical again. I have been using it for about a week and so far so good. Well, almost so good. Occasionally it will not obey me all that well - much like my children - but when I lift the mouse up into the air and then set it back down, it behaves. This makes no sense to me and may not work if things are really bad but I have my fingers crossed.

Answer:Report on an erratic mouse

Lifting the mouse up shouldn't make any difference...

I suggest cleaning it (make sure there isn't any hair or lint inside the mouse). Take the mouse apart and use a can of compressed air to remove any debris.

Also try using it on a difference surface, even just putting a sheet of non-glossy paper down.

I went back to a wired mouse and keyboard.Click to expand...

From this I take it the erratic mouse is wireless, yes?

If so it will have a battery, I suggest replacing the battery with a new one and cleaning the contacts with an alcohol based (fragrance free) cleaning fluid.

Hello all,I have an odd problem in that if I leave my P.C. on for some time, the mouse pointer is very erratic and difficult to control. It jumps about as I try and control it. Nothing happens initially when I move the ball then the pointer jumps way past where I intended. The other thing that happens is that the clock loses a lot of time. I'm guessing that there is something running that is disrupting the general visible operations that I am trying to run.Alec

I strongly suspect malware since mouse problems began about same time pc was infected with malware and FakeHDD virus. Avira, Ad-aware, and Malwarebytes all report clean system now, however mouse still acts erratically (a simple click will often act as double-click opening multiple windows wherever the pointer was resting, drag and drop almost impossible to accomplish, etc).

I booted to safe mode, uninstalled mouse drivers, then using keyboard deleted mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys. I then scanned for hardware changes and allowed drivers to be reinstalled. Is this the correct way to reinstall the mouse drivers? Where is the system reinstalling the drivers from? The mouse behavior is still present, so, assuming malware is the culprit, I am not confident that I am performing the reinstall correctly.

fyi: mouse configuration doesn't seem to be connected with the erratic behavior.

I use PSE9 for scrapbooking and sometimes when I resize, move, draw, erase,....pretty much do something with the mouse, it is as though where ever I am clicking, the mouse is clicking somewhere else. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, is there a solution? I have done the ctrl + alt + shift...and it still happens. I have uninstalled and then downloaded from the site and used my serial number....I have it on disk. I have updated it, and still nothing....any help will be much appreciated!!!! Oh, most time I see the problem...people have some kind of tablet...I do not.

My Razer mouse has started acting up on me and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Two previous mice have fallen into the same trap. It is a mystery. Cursor movement is jittery in spots, slightly difficult to follow in a straight line, and has a tendency to lean in a rightward direction.

The methods I've tried to resolve this issue:
1) thinking it was dust related, I've gently got after the lens with a can of compressed air
2) swapped USB ports
3) moved mouse to a laser mousepad
4) (Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Mouse>Pointer Options) changed Motion & enhanced pointer precision settings
5) reinstall system to factory condition

None of the above changed anything. Windows Update is fully updated and I do wonder if the problem is related, or if there is a conflict between drivers. When I enter safemode, the mouse movement is buttery smooth!

I am going to post some screenshots related to my mouse to see if anyone can detect anything ususual. Will post more screens if needed.

1) Troubleshooting hardware

2) HID mouse?

3) Razer mouse

4) Razer Synapse (additional mouse settings)

Answer:Help w/erratic mouse movement??

There is a possibility that the mouse is defective. To test this you try the mouse on another system at another location (different tabletop/mousepad).

There is a possibility that the Razor driver or your installation is bad. To test this completely uninstall the mouse, download a new driver file (check version info carefully), and then do a 2 part installation:
Plug the mouse in an let Windows install it's generic mouse driver. Use it like that for a while - do the problems persist? (If Windows automatically installs the old Razor driver then you did not "completely" uninstall it)
Then install the Razor driver. If the problems persist then try a different, older driver for that mouse.
Also: clean the mouse laser lens with a Q-tip dipped in warm water. Do not use detergent, window cleaners using ammonia, solvents like alcohol. Just warm, clean water. All of the above can leave a thin film or distort the lens.

I've had a wired Dell mouse that has worked fine for years. I decided I wanted to use a wireless mouse.

When I put the wireless receiver on my desktop and use the mouse on the desktop it works fine (with the wired mouse still plugged in).

When I put the wireless mouse on the mouse tray next to my keyboard and slighly below my desk, it work erracticly UNLESS I keep my wired mouse next to it (and plugged in)

If I remove the wired mouse, the wireless mouse will not work when the receiveer is on top of my computer, which is underneath my desk, and my mouse is on the mouse tray (also under the desktop), which is my preferred position for the mouse. I don't want to use it on my desktop as it's uncomfoprtable there.

Any suggestions?

I'm on a laptop running Vista Home Premium, no optical mouse, no external anything, and the mouse is jumping all over the place. I primarily use this system for email and it takes 20 attempts to get through typing an email. because the cursor randomly moves and next thing i know I'm typing in the middleo of a sentence I've already written. I've got McAfee running, so shouldn't be any crud on the system.

What am I missing? Is there a simple fix to this? I've searched forums and not seen a clear, concise answer for this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, not sure if this applies to you, but toshiba has a thing out about having the mouse problem. They said it is fixed when you use a 3 prong plug instead of the one they supplied which is a two prong. It still may be something completely different for you though.

Hi Guys

I recently bought a Logitech wireless mouse. It worked fine at first - but lately it seems to stall when I try to move the pointer. I replaced the AA battery with a new one - but it still has the same malady. Sometimes it works fine - for a few minutes - (ten?) then the pointer stalls on the screen no matter how I move the mouse. At this moment it works fine.
Any thoughts

My mouse began moving very erratically recently. When the problem began, I supposed that it may have been a driver problem because I had just upgraded to WIN7 64-bit. However, the problem cropped up after about a week of flawless operation. I ran a thorough scan using Avast, but that didn't solve the issue, so I re-installed WIN7 from scratch. The mouse still moves erratically, but less so than before. Prior to the re-install, the mouse pointer moved very quickly, so quickly that I had a lot of difficulty even clicking on anything, but now it seems more docile, jumping only a few inches at a time every few seconds.

I appreciate whatever help you can provide.

P.S. I'm using a 64-bit OS (which I have the disc media for), so I didn't run GMER, only DDS.

It has started acting very strangely - opening windows, emails and documents when I just hover - no clicking - and will open anything the cursor is near - no matter whether I want it to or not. This is a newer behavior - it worked fine when I got the laptop in July, but in the past few weeks, it has beocme a bigger and bigger issue. It recently opened over 30 browser windows before I could figure out how to stop it. I have scanned for viruses, tried several different mice, used all three of the USB ports, and it still happens. If I restart the laptop, it seems fine for a time, but then suddenly, it happens again. It is very frustrating when it goes crazy like that and there is no way to gain control except unplugging the USB nub or restarting the computer. I would appreciate any ideas - have looked around online and see various suggestions - change speed of mouse, disable tapping on trackpad (which I don't use), change battery (I did), download driver (up to date), but none seem to work. Right now in my Device manager, I have this HID Compliant Mouse and the Thinkpad Ultranav Pointing Device under Mice, and I have 5 Human Interface Devices - one HID compliant Consumer Control device, two HID compliant devices and two USB Input devices, but I don't know what they actually all are. I'll be happy to provide any additional info that might help. Thanks!

For the past couple of days, I've had this annoying problem on my laptop. My keyboard and mouse are going nuts! Sometimes some keys don't work, sometimes they display another letter or character. For instance I often have a problem with the "e" that displays ? instead.

With my notepad, I have similar problems. The left click often displays the properties instead of opening the application. The right click displays the menu for a very short time before disappearing for no reason.

It's getting very annoying because I can't type anything or do anything on my laptop (I'm using another computer to type this message). I ran several anti-virus scans with several softwares but it didn't pick up anything wrong. I tried plugging in an external keyboard and an external mouse, but the same problems occurred. I uninstalled the keyboard and reinstalled it with no success. I did a restoration system to before the problem popped up, but it didn't change anything. The problem also occurs in the BIOS and in safe mode. Can anyone help please?

Built myself a new PC a couple of days ago and installed XP after reading the comments of a lot of people on this site. Very happy with it but have noticed a mouse problem after upping the resolution to 1024 by 728. My specs are K7S6A,2200XP,256 DDR and Radeon 7000 64 Meg Graphics. I have a cordless mouse and keyboard bought from Time(aarggh) a couple of months ago. My previous PC had a bog standard 8 meg graphics and with my 17 inch monitor I had no problems with 1024-728 and 16 bit colour using the same mouse and keyboard. Now, on my current PC at those settings my mouse slows right down and I have to click a couple (or three)times for the PC to respond. If I run at 800/600 I have no problems. Anyone got any ideas please?

Answer:erratic mouse after upping resolution

EDIT: disabled touch pad. Problem solved.

Currently running Windows 10, been completely fine so far. I have the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro.

Just today after browsing through some anime sites, my mouse started to behave strangely. Occasionally the cursor just jumps around randomly for about a half a second, usually localized to a general area where the cursor was before. This is not tied to typing or anything else as far as I can see (maybe loading?).

I don't recall downloading anything from the sites. I've confirmed that my mouse is not the issue (it happens when unplugged). I restored my PC to the restore point two days ago (my last windows update). Any help would be appreciated.

I think that your scroll wheel encoder has a fail. Did you dropped any liquid over the mouse?

When I open IE I sometimes get a blank white page instead of my Home page. In the title bar there is a refernce to "About:Blank.

My mouse has started to behave erratically. I appreciate that I may have a faulty mouse &/or a corrupted driver and that this mouse problem is not caused by malware but the start of the behaviour coincide with the "arrival" of About:Blank.

One example of the erratic behaviour is that when i have IE (or Firefox) open and click the "Back" button it goes back two pages. Another example is that when I have my OE Inbox open and delete a message, the message immediately above or below the "target" is also deleted.

Sometimes when I open a new window it is hidden behind the existing window instead of on top.

Scans with AVG and Spybot S&D have not found any malware.

I've been using Toshiba Techra M2V XP SP2 Laptop for over a year with a USB Toshiba Optical Mouse without problems. Early on in I turned off the mousepad because it would either sense my movements over the keyboard or something and jump lines while I was typing text.

Just lately, I've had a problem similar to Messa who posted in October about her Toshiba mouse acting erratically with a different computer. Mine would work fine for a couple of hours and then suddently stop working. I'd pull it out of the USB port and plug it back in and it'd work for a short time and stop again. I'd pull it out and if it didn't work when I put it back in, I'd switch to another USB port and it would work for a while.

I turned my mousepad back on so I'd have it as a backup when the mouse would fail again. USB device not recognized and similar messages would come on.

I'm suspicious that some conflict suddenly occurred. Only two things I think might have changed some registry setting (if this is what would create a conflict). I do not edit the registry unless a small specific change is clearly given me by some technician or support document.

One recent action is that I downloaded a printer program SysExporter v1.2 that would capture text from my Garmin GPS watch when the usual print command wouldn't work on some websites. Microsoft had a support paper Q272623 on adding print directory feature and another related paper that told about changes t... Read more

I am not sure if this should be on here or on the peripherals section of the forum.
I own a XPS 13 laptop and type c dock, I have erratic mouse movement and keyboard issues from these external components when used through the dock via the USB ports.  If I leave the laptop slightly open the issues go away.  Also if I plug them directly into the USB ports on the laptop I also get no issues. This is my current work around although for a brand new laptop and dock having to plug in 3 things rather than just the docking station doesn't make much sense.
I have tried the keyboard and mouse on other PC's with no issues.

A couple of months ago, I purchased a new Logitech MX610 cordless, laser mouse. I was hoping to use this in conjunction with my system which has a Gigabyte K8N-SLI motherboard, 3200+ processor and 1 gig of DDR. My PCI express graphics card is only a Radeon X300 SE. Since installing the new mouse it has been very erratic with the cursor, so I have been trying to rectify this fault by following all the advice on Logitech website. After a couple of months I have tried everything possible, including putting the small USB connector onto a USB extension, so that it is away from the main computer system. Still, after it has warmed up for a minute or two, the mouse cursor jumps everywhere on the VDU. Has anyone else experienced this with this mouse, and been able to rectify it. I do like the build of this mouse, so I would like to be able to use it. Thanks for any help given.

Newbie. tried searching for answer but not familiar enough with site to know where to go. Attached HijackThis logfile.

Main problem is that all of the sudden mouse is acting erratic, stops half way across screen then catches up a second or two later. There is now a typing delay, which is driving me nuts.

Ran updated spybot and adaware. No major virus to speak of. Working on Dell L600 laptop, XP, lots of RAM, on a docking station. External logitech wireless mouse. Attached Palm Vx, does not synchonize unless transfer speed is dialed down way low (9600) Never had problems up to recently. No new software or hardware.

Thanks in advance for the help.

For example, in Graphic Properties -> Information -> Support window there is a couple of links. When I hover my mouse over those links, cursor just "jumps". In fact, it is very hard to click on one link. Also, in CATIA (CAD\CAM\CAE software) when I hover my mouse over some icons on a toolbar it also "jumps". It is very hard to click on any of icons. In normal usage (other then those two windows\programs mentioned above) cursor is normal, for now...Also, when I boot to Safe Mode the cursor is normal. After some time I realized that my graphics card driver is causing these anomalities. The mouse cursor is behaving normal when I uninstall graphics card driver.I am using Intel x3100.Can someone please help me to get rid of this annoying problem.

The problem is that I AM ON A BATTERY!So, once again, please, someone post a message and tell me if you are experiencing the problems mentioned above and if not, what operating system, which service pack (if one) and what drivers. Thanks in advance.

My mouse seems to have a mind of its own. I'm using Windows XP SP3. The problem first appeared while using a PS/2 optical mouse.

I have tried replacing the mouse with a new USB optical mouse and have the same problem.

It seems as though the problem started after installing a new HP OffieJet J4680c USB printer, but that may only be a coincidence.

When I look at the hardware list there appears to be two hid-compliant mouse devices and both show two drivers (mouclass.sys & mouhid.sys). Version 5.1.2600.5512.

Sometimes I can boot and have no problem for several minutes, even an hour or so, then it starts.

I ran services.msc and disabled or set to manual many services but to no avail.

I am now trying an old PS/2 ball style mouse. It has been working fine for about an hour.

I'm not sure if the problem is related but at about the same time my old Word 97 program has stopped printing. It acts like it is going to print but then nothing. When I try to close the program it gives me an error message that it is trying to print then asks if I want to send a report to Microsoft.

I have done a complete scan with Avast and it shows no problem.

Any help?

Answer:Erratic mouse [moved from Security]

From your description it sounds like it could be a driver conflict, look on the internet for the latest version of the driver, download to your desktop. Uninstall all current mouse drivers, then run the ones you downloaded. Also check for a printer driver update if you think it's happened since you installed it.

Answer:Erratic Mouse Issue: X41 Tablet

I have the same problem on my x41 tablet too, I just assumed it was microsoft and their bugs. It would be nice to fix it. I'm surprised you have vista on your x41. Is it dreadfully slow? I wish I could upgrade to something other than XP, but linux sounds like a hassle (getting use of the digitizer) and vista is well... vista. I'm worried it would be too bloated to work on an ultra portable tablet pc.I have an idea and this is assuming that the program won't let you extract the files to something other than a floppy disk. These computers are made to boot from a usb drive. I've done it before. On another computer, make the bootable floppy disk. Then copy those files from the floppy to a completely blank usb drive. Boot into your bios, and it should be fairly easy to find where to change the boot order, and make sure that USB is selected (I don't know if it's disabled by default). See if that works, it's just an idea.I can see how the program that runs in windows wouldn't work in vista.Good luck. And I'd like to hear about your experience with vista on your laptop.

I bought a microsoft model 1016 compact optical mouse to use with my acer aspire 3680-2472 notebook and vista. The notebook has an Intel celeron M processorv520 (1.6 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache), Intel graphics media accelerator 950 and 1GB DDR2. While the touchpad works properly the mouse operation causes the pointer to be very erratic in its movements. Sometimes it will move correctly others it will snap to the borders or corners. A search reveled that there has been many posts with this problem with little resolution. I can operate the notebook with the touchpad but i would prefer to use a mouse. All 3 of my desktops have xp on them and i have never experienced the disfunctional behavior that i have with vista. I hope that some resolution can be found.

I just barely reinstalled my Windows 7 computer, and have transferred my files back to my computer from an external hard drive. I decided to sort and delete unused files, when eventually my mouse movement started to move very erratic.

Moving to the left seems to cover less ground, while moving to the right seems to work normally. Up and down has the same effects as left movement, which is why moving to the right isn't always smooth or perfect.

I am using a wired Razer Deathadder mouse (left handed), and have the correct drivers installed. I have restarted the computer but I still have the same symptoms! This movement is very annoying, and I'd like to know what is causing it.

Greetings!

About a month, month and a half ago I started experiencing my Logitech G5 mouse just turn off and then after a random amount of time turn back on. Doesn't not make for a good scenario when gaming especially in clutch moments.

The mouse is five years old and the fabric around the cord has frayed away and some of the plastic sheathing has stripped away as well. I'm figuring the the cord had a short in it. So I order a new mouse.

My new mouse a Cyborg R.A.T. 5. I must have gamed with the mouse for about a week, week and a half and then it started exhibiting similar behavior. It would turn off and not turn back on. I'd have to unplug the USB plug and then wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Some times it would work, sometimes it would not.

I've done the following:

Full virus scan with nothing foundMove the mouse (both of them) to the other three ports on the back of the PC and even the front two ports. Same behavior.100% up to date drivers and softwareSearched fruitlessly for a solution

Any of the other devices plugged in act fine! And those devices would be a web cam (not in use), printer (not in use) and my keyboard.

I've attached my msinfo32 file. I had to pair down the windows errors and program hangs back to December. If you need the whole file just let me know.

msinfo32 .txt

I'm super grateful for any help! Cause this is really un-nerving!

I recently acquired a second-hand desktop Dell Vostro with wireless keyboard and mouse. I am running Windows 7. Recently, the wireless mouse behaves erratically before ceasing to move altogether betwee 2 and 5 minutes after boot up. Sometimes, pushing the wireless reconnect button on the receiver fixes the issue for 30 seconds or so.
After Googling the issue, I've tried the following:

connected wired mouse - works fine
connected wireless keyboard and mouse to another system - also works fine
new batteries
move receiver
remove anything which may be causing interference
removed and reinstalled mouse driver
using different USB port

This is slowly driving me insane. It seems others had the issue but no clear resolution from my searches. Any help is much appreciated.
