Employment Tribunal, K Drive & document properties!

Question: Employment Tribunal, K Drive & document properties!

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help! I'm in the process of taking my ex employer to court and in the process to prove the dates that they have created certain documents I have asked them to provide me with copies of the "date and time stamps" or "property profile box" showing when they were created, I am aware that these can be tampered with so I'm not relying totally on the information.
Two of the profiles boxes they sent for two of the documents were dated exactly the same date and time and were obviously not the originals as they had been converted to pdf files. However on the 3rd document, which was supposed to be written by an individual it states the location as K:\cmm\program files\mailbox\Attach As an individual I have never saved a document to a K drive. Can someone tell me what a k drive would normally be used for and explain the location address for me please? who would create a document under the program files!!!!! Please help!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Employment Tribunal, K Drive & document properties!

Hi maddal1ne,

Just a guess here, going by the path name, that the file in questions was sent to someone as an email attachment and then fowarded to you. Assuming this, it is is a probable location for a mail program to save attachments.

It is unlikely that the drive letter has any significance.

hi all,

I'm sure this is very basic to solve but I am not a hugely experienced user of office.

I am trying to make a table in word 2000; but with the names in the margins at 90 degrees to each other. (does that make sence?) Actually what I would like to do is have the months of the year JAN, FEB, MAR, etc running vertically down the page to save space.

Hope someone can help.

regards,
imbai

Answer:document properties problem

Highlight the cells you are going to put the names of the months in then right click inside the selected area, left click on "Text Direction."

Here's an question to ponder for those who like mysteries... I wanted to see what date I had last accessed one of my documents so I right-clicked its icon, chose Properites and discovered the date "August 29, 2005." That would have been ok but I didn't remember even looking at that doc for over a year. It got really weird (for me at least) when I checked other documents' Properties and *every* one of them had the date "August 29, 2005" down as the date last accessed! No - I didn't look at everything on my machine on that day! I then experimented by clicking out/back in to Properties and saw that the correct access date (in this case, today) was now listed.

Another unusual date thing occurred earlier this week in our email (Outlook Express): the "sent dates" jumped one month ahead. (I currently have emails listed as being sent on "September 25, 2005.") I know that this occurs when the clock/calendar in the system tray is adjusted/applied and I *may* have clicked in the wrong month at a sleepy moment (I have since reset the calendar to the correct date) but it seems really strange to me that the documents Property access dates have become incorrect as well.

So - what do you think? Could it be a battery thing? The machine (Dell Dimension 4100) will be 5 years old in January. It's definitely odd to me and I would appreciate some of your excellent advice!

All the best, davek2

When I now drag an icon to the desk top, I no longe have the web document tab, so can't make a new icon picture. I have Windows 7 and IE 9 on my computer. I tried the webdoctab.reg fix, but it says that is was not written successfully to the registry.
Wonder what else I can do to get the web document tab to come back.
Thanks,

Answer:lost the web document tab in icon properties

you didn't specify what you are doing, but just dragging an icon shortcut from your computer (ex) program, or file, will not give you the Web Document tab. This is only if you drag a hyperlink from a web page to your desktop, because that would be a WEB document.

I believe that the document properties in Word 2007 (especially author) is being picked up from the login name in windows XP. I know how to change the document properties on a single document, however, I would like to know how to change the document properties for WORD -- period. In other words, I don't want my login name to be the author, I want my REAL name to be the author. Also, my company name is NOT in my login info, so there is no company coming up, I would like to change these properties so that everytime I start a document it's already there. So far everytime I change the properties, then close the document and start a new one, it goes back to the original. (I assume this problem is being perpetrated throughout the Office Suite...)

Is this an option?

Thanks for any information about this you can provide,

Hi all,I have a query... (as you do on a forum)I have a folder with a fair amount of subfolders and files and doc etc.. each with thier own subsets etc...I need to provide a list of documents in the whole folder that shows where is each file is pointed linked to.For example: 'FolderMain' contains folders a, b and c. Each of the folders contain various documents (MSOffice docs and web pages). Various webpages contain links to documents in various folders.I need to prodive something which supplies information along the lines of:Manual.doc = home.htm, index.htm, policy.htmIs this do-able? Will the database/software have to be written specifically or is there something that can provide this already in existence? Thanks all.I hope i made it as clear as possible.

I have a user who has recently migrated from NT (Word 97) to XP (Word 2003). They have some 800+ documents that were setup to print page one to tray on and the rest of the pages to tray 2. Since migrating all the documents no longer have these properties. I have installed the same network printer on the XP box as the NT one. Anyone know how to resolve the problem without loading all 800 documents into word one at a time ?.

Hi, I've purchased a new PC with Windows 7. My old one had Windows XP. I'm having quite a challenge adapting to Windows 7...can't find what I need without having to search all over the system & on the internet.

For now, I need help on removing certain information - for lack of a better explanation. In Windows XP, I would insert the path of a document, by clicking on "insert", "auto text", "header/footer" then "filename and path". I thought I did the correct thing in the word document in windows 7 but instead I wound up creating data info that I don't want, don't know how to remove it because I can't find what I did to set it up in the first place. It prints a separate page after each document finishes printing & it has the following info to name a few:

filename, directory, template, title, subject, author, keywords, comments, creation date

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

I would like to edit the properties on some of my documents without, if possible, opening and editing each document 1 by 1. (I have about 100 documents to edit)

Specifically I would like to change author information. At the time of creation these documents were saved under user profile "User" and not in my name. I personally would like to be acknowledged as the author of these docs’s and have this information inserted into the document properties.

Is there a way to apply these changes to a folder or group of documents en masse?

Thank You

Windows XP SP2
Microsoft Office Word 2003

Answer:Solved: Changing document properties-en masse

Welcome to TSG!

Highlight all the documents you want to change, right click, choose properties. Click Summary tab. Click Advanced button if it's showing.
Click in the Author field {it will be showing a name, or say (multiple values)} and type the name you want. You can change any of the displayed fields (Probably don't want to change the Title). Then Click OK.

I have MS Word 2007 and the one thing I hate about it is it's default document settings. These are the settings that are applied when I open a new document in MS Word. Exactly what I dislike is the line spacing. It is always set to 1.15 and there is also a new setting I've never seen in a MS word application. It is simply stated as After and is measured by a pt value. This setting is always at 12 and I want it to be 0.If anybody knows how to keep these settings permanent please give me a heads up.

Hello there, board! Any chance there's a VBA wizard that can help me out?

I'm looking for a bit of VBA that will help me update custom document properties in 50 + documents all at once. The files vary in number and in name, but there are times when I have to update the custom document properties in a number of them (always kept in the same folder, if that helps any). It takes a lot of time, think this can be automated?

One thing that would be handy is if it could start in Excel, where I could fill in the new values for the fields and then hit a button, choose which files (or folders containing files) need to be updated, and have it magically do it for me.

Is this possible? Or too ambitious?

Many thanks!

I've been working with computers as a hobby for 10 years. I never did it as a job but I would really like to start a career where I can go somewhere and I love working with computers and it's a hot job. I fix a lot of my family and friends pc's. I really enjoy it. I posted on here before about it. My problem is where to even start. I have no college or any certifications. All my knowledge comes from message boards and just working with computers on my own. I have applied for several tech support jobs. Is that the place to start? I enjoy hardware and software, and networking. I thought about getting my MCDST cert which could get me in to tech support. They have a 5 day accelerated program. I only have about 3 months of unemployment left so I don't have a lot of time to go to school. The pay is low but I thought it looked like a good place to start. Does anyone think it's possible to start even higher by getting a different certification? Maybe a system administrator? If anyone has anymore suggestions from what I was already told I would really appreciate it.

Answer:Looking for computer employment

There are approximately 1 million unemployed I.T. professionals since the Dot Com bust a couple of years ago. You are going to need an education, certification and experience to get a job these days.

Boy oh boy I spent 20 minutes on it and I feel like I just stepped into the Twilight Zone or some kind of nightmare realm. My god that is the most depressing stuff I've read.

I'm talking about the state of IT employment. Is it really THAT bad?? Half the posts on there are about how Indians with H1B visas are taking all the IT jobs and almost no Americans ever get hired. And how your only chance of getting hired is if you get a Masters degree in CS with 5000 years experience and only then will a company let you polish the boots of the janitor on a part time basis

Try spending more than 20 minutes truly researching this topic.

Posting something useful or about yourself, such as the kinds of jobs you would be interested in, would be a great start to having more experienced peers provide insight and research directions.

In my employment as a deals and advertising administrator and as an authorized bug control specialist and field agent, one of the capacities I perform is investigating nuisance related news around the USA. I spend a substantial number of hours on this exploration, so I have a truly decent handle on which irritations are making news and which ones are of worry to individuals. The main vermin, as tallied by the news articles I've seen, is the basic kissing bug, Cim Derma Bellix ex, lectarius. These obnoxious animals have, to date, not been demonstrated to transmit malady starting with one individual Derma Bellix onto the next, yet they do spread dread, shame, distress and wretchedness.

I've been trying to create a search string using google to search for all open employment listings for a certain city (reading, pa and surrounding towns). I've tried going thru google help, and haven't found anything useful. I want to exclude agencies, job sites, and get hits only for the business itself. While I"ve been partially successful, I still get over 26,000 results. This is the search string:
inurl:employment 610- OR 484- OR "reading, pa" OR "wyomissing, pa" -agency -temp -temporary.
The 610 and 484 is the area code, but since some businesses do not want phone calls, the phone# might not be listed, so I tried also using the city, state. problem is, I do not know how many "OR" commands google will accept (considering there are about 20 surrounding towns I would like to include). Using zip codes might, except I don't know how to do that. I also wish to include sites with the word "jobs" in the url, in addition to "employment". I need to reduce the number of results quite a bit, any ideas? thanks.

I have been working with computers and networking for almost 12 years, and have been doing sidework for it for nearly 5 years. I was in the telecom industry for 5 years as well installing/troubleshooting sonet rings, DS1/DS3 circuit and end use CPE. The telecom industry took a big crash and as a result i was laid off. Having seen the writeing on the wall I went to my local technical college and got the "Networking Technican Certificate" I am also taking my Net+ and possibly my CCNA. However its come to the point where I need a job, and I am having a hard time getting interviews. I was hoping some of the more veteran IT guys/gals out there could give me some advice. Should I include my telecom experiences on my resume? Should I drop that and stick with what I learned in school? Are there key things that employers in the IT industry look for in a resume? I am extremely frustrated and cannot for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

p.s any employers looking for an entry-intermediate level employee in the washington state are let me know

p.p.s. I was looking at the linux+ cert and was curious if this is a sought after certifcation for employers??

Answer:New IT student hardup for employment, need some advice

I would definately include the telecom experience if I were you. Unfortunately I am in Atlanta, but we may be doing some hiring in the coming months. Currently I work in a group troubleshooting Frame and ATM circuits up to DS3, Cisco routers of all types, and Nortel passport switches. If you are interested send me your resume and when the openings come up I can submit it for you. No promises of course, but I have been told that there will be two slots opening up soon...

Hi,
I am applying for an entry level position with a company, and have a question about one of their computer skill requirements ...

"We require knowledge and experience in browsing the Internet using Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer along with the ability to work on Windows and Media Access Control address platforms"

I have read up on MAC addresses, but cannot find much detail on what would be expected of me in this situation. Can anyone explain how one would "work" with this? Also, is this something I can teach myself or learn in a reasonable amount of time? Any resources that would be useful? Finally, do they mean Windows platform and MAC platform, or some type of Windows/MAC platform?

I am computer literate, but appreciate the use of layman's terms when possible.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this!

Answer:Help with General Computer Skills For Employment Opportunity

I've been around the block a few times and have never heard of "Media Access Control address platforms" as phrased...

My stepfather was cruisin some internet porn when he clicked on something that he thought was legit (he's very new to computers!) and managed to really mess up the computer with a backdoor trojan (or two, or three) which I believe I have managed to get rid of. *How this came about*
I tried to move my Music library, but instead of including the 'Music' folder in F:\ drive, I included the drive itself.
I promptly included the 'Music' folder in F:\ and set it as the default location, then removed F:\ from the Music library locations.

However...

Eh yeah, this looks embarrassing.

The 'normal' location is F:\ .

I've since deleted the 'Music' library twice and performed restarts for each attempt. None removed my F:\ drive from my 'Users' folder or removed the 'Locations' tab from the F:\ drive properties.

It's a minor technical problem but a major eyesore.

Answer:Drive in 'User' folder, 'Location' tab in drive properties

I have had this problem a few times but I can't remember what I did the last time because it was some time ago.

When you right click on the D:\ Drive and go to properties it comes up saying that the drive is 5.5GB but when you select the files in D drive the size is only 2GB. It says the drive has only 100mb free and the drive is 6GB & no I can't just make it bigger

There are no files directly under the root directory and hidden files or folders are showing. I ran the disk cleanup but that only freed up a littke bit of space, no fix the issue

Thanks

Answer:D drive smaller then properties say

Hi,
In addition to the hidden files or folders, have you selected the system files to be shown that are normally hidden?

I had a samsung hard drive originally in computer. Now have installed a seagate 200gb hard drive. My question is why won't the computer recognize the seagate 200gb? Instead the computer still recognizes the 64 gb samsung hard drive even though it is not installed. Where are all of my gbs? I have run the Flash Bios update that Was recommended by Compaq but after doing that come up with a Check sum issue. Would greatly appreciate any help here.

Answer:Properties for hard drive

OK, I probably can't get you past the check sum issue with the BIOS. And the answer to your problem may have something to do with the age of your computer. But I see you've been waiting a day so here are a few thoughts that might help.

The first thing I would do is boot up the machine and see if I can get into BIOS. If you can, tell the BIOS to redetect the primary drive - assuming you've replaced the old drive and not simply added a new one. Then save and your machine will restart. That's the quick and easy solution. And who knows? Will probably clear up the checksum problem. If this doesn't work...

Go to your manufacturer's site (like Dell, Gateway, eMachine (also Gateway), HP...). In your case Compaq? The site should have your original set up, but you have to know your model number or serial number or order number, etc. If your machine is old you may have to look in the Archived support area. But from your note, you may be past that. You should be able to get all the specs, including the BIOS manufacturer here. The user's manual may have a way to clear/reset BIOS via a jumper setting. (I THINK that's right.)

When you flash the BIOS, you have to be very careful and follow instructions exactly. Depending on which BIOS you have (Award, Phoenix, AMI, etc.) you may be able to get help on their site if not Compaq's.

Now, as to the HD, you need to have the correct cable, it needs to be attached properly, and... Read more

What does it mean to have this unchecked?

Answer:[SOLVED] Drive Properties

It depends a lot on the power of your system. If you'd completed My System I could have given you an idea. Seriously, the Indexing Service can make searching easier, but on a slow machine, because the indexing goes a bit overboard, it can slow things down. On a reasonably powerful machine it is worth having it on and programs shouldn't be affected by it much. If you notice a reduction in performance, it's time to think about upgrading.

After an upgrade from 98SE to XP, I cannot access the C drive properties (right-clicking C). File system still FAT32.

Before the upgrade, we unpartitioned the drive and had some FAT errors. C did not show full space. After the XP upgrade, we were able to capture the unallocated space back to C using Resize in PartitionMagic. But we were left with inability to right-click on C (it sends an error report to Microsoft and restarts Explorer).

Will a conversion to NTFS and the resulting new file table resolve the inability to access C properties?

I'm assisting someone who's son had accidentally set a non-system HD (the entire HD) security properties to full restrictions for EVERYBODY to prevent someone from deleting his files. Now not even he can delete, open, copy, or move files and folders. When attempting to do so he gets a warning that only an administrator can change the properties. The problem is I don't know how to do this. They had never been aware of an administrator account. They did not set one up and therefore are not aware of any passwords if they require one.

Is there a way to reset/unblock the properties? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will not have much access to their computer so I will do my best in relaying the steps involved. Here's hoping he will not lose any files!

Hi,

I have two NTFS external hard drives: "HD1" and "HD2". I was copying a folder from "HD1" to "HD2" that is nested about 6 or 7 subfolders and I get and error that says "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path." From reading on forums and from my experience, if I click "Skip", the file and folders are still copied to HD2. Also, I tried copying the most nested "subfolder 7" to the main folder and then dragged it to "subfolder 6" without getting an error.

Either way, it looks like both hard drive folders contain the same amount of files and folders when I manually open each folder but I noticed when right click to see the folder properties, the "Contains" item shows a different number of files and folders. Even as I was going through the nested subfolders to find discrepancies, the folder properties would say it contained 344 files but I opened the folder and it had 345 files.

Is there a Windows program that will list each folder and subfolder and show exactly how many files and folder each one contains? I'd like to make sure both hard drives contain the same files but I'm afraid of downloading some program that does this because of privacy concerns.

I hope this isn't too long and confusing. Thanks in advance for any help!

I was wondering if anybody has any ideas. I was thinking that the properties dialog box is an API call from a .dll but what .dll is the question. Any help would be great.

Ok, I am quite literally almost fed up with Vista! I love so much about it though, it's just so faulty in ways. Here's my latest issue...
When I checked my hard drive properties, where you see the pie graph that shows used vs free space, it had drastically dropped in used space. I have done extensive searching to see what was gone, and nothing is missing. I have no viruses or spyware, and my pc runs great. I recently cleaned out some stuff, but that was weeks ago. I check my properties quite frequently, and there was no drastic change in space til today. My question is, is this a typical thing with Vista? I have also noticed some other weird things that never happened with XP, and performed extensive tests everytime to try and find the problem. Everytime i come up with nothing. It's got to be a Vista flaw.....

I have a X300, 60gb SSD, Vista Business. However this question should apply to all users. Click Start, click Computer, you should see your Hard Disk Drives (in this case it's the C: drive)1) Right click C: drive, select and click Properties, note your "Used space:" (mine is 44.2GB)2) Right click C: drive, select and click Open, you will see all your files/folders in your C: drive, click drag (select all) files and folders, right click them, select and click Properties, note your  "Size on disk:" (mine is 24.0GB) So according to these properties I have about 20GB's of unknown used hard drive space. Which leads to my question:  Should the "Used space" properties within your C: drive equal to the "Size on disk:" properties when you select-all-file after opening the C: drive? If not, then why? I appreciate any answers and replys. Aloha,George

Something utterly strange and annoying has happened to my external 2TB hard drive. All of a sudden, I can see the drive in 'My Computer' but have no permissions to access it in Explorer.

Additionally, when i try to right-click and take ownership, that's not an option. And when i do open the properties for the drive, there is no Security tab where I can change owners/permissions.

The odd thing about it -- as if that weren't enough -- is that I can still access (view) the files on that drive if I do it through an application (like VLC) that has already a 'recently played' list, etc.

I have also run chkdsk and it reports no errors.

HELP, PLEASE!

My C: drive appears to be using more space than what I put on it.  When I open my C: drive I have 12 folders listed; three which are using the most memory: Documents and Settings is using 45GB, Program Files is using 10GB, and Windows is using 7GB.  The rest of the folders are using about 3GB so I've taken up roughly 65GB of my 160GB hard drive.  But, my C: drive Properties shows Used space: 127GB, Free space: 15.6GB, Capacity: 143GB.  I know the Operating System and whatnot take up some of the space but it can't be 60GB worth?  What else could possibly be taking up the rest of my hard drive?  Here are my specs: Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, SP 3 (Bought Vista with XP downgrade)Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 2.4GHz2.39GHz, 2.98GB RAMATI Mobility Radeon 3470, 256MB3 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpmDVD Recordable 8x Max Dual LayerIntel WiFi Link 5100

Check your backups with Rescue and recovery. You can get there by going toStart->All Programs->ThinkVantage->Rescue and Recovery Once program is opened Click "advanced" and then "delete backups"From there you should have a list of current HDD backups on system. If there aren't any here, or not the source of the problem, use Lenovo Tool Box's Disk Space Manager to figure out what is taking up the space. You can get there by going to Start->All Programs->Lenovo Services->Lenovo Systems Toolbox. If you don't see the folder then your system isn't up to date but you can download it manually here.   * P.S. If you are using a windows from Lenovo it will have an hidden F11 partition using anywhere between 10GBs to 20GBs of HDD space. this partition can be removed but contains diagnostic tools and  a back up of windows factory state.

I turned on sharing for the C drive and added an Everyone group in Security to allow access to my other computer on my network. When I go to close the Properties window I a message that says "You are about to change the permissions settings on the root directory of the startup disk which can result in unexpected access problems and reduce security. Do you want to continue?".

I answered yes and it went through all the folders and gave an access denied message on system folders. After if was done I got the same message mentioned when I tried to exit the Properties window. I am running software that requires a mapped drive.
I create a shotcut that points to a target and start directory with mapped drives. However when Win7 exucutes details show UNC path and software does not work. the server is a win2008R2. I can create the sortcut on the server. It functions on the server.
If I browse to the shortcut and attempt to execute from a Win7 machine. The actual Icon properties now show UNC path and not the mapped drives info I had entered. Now Icon fails on the server as its properties have been changed. XP machines do not have this
problem. I've tried chaning the shortcut on the server to run in XP mode and it works the same. I attempted to change the shortcut on the WIN7 to run in XP mode, but that option did not seem to open. I tried testing compatablility executable test as XP SP3,
but when I try to accept this compatablility mode I WIN7 responds something like improper software and will not set to run in XP mode.
Any ideas what causes this?
Thanks in advance

I have an external drive, Hammer "morespace" 500BG usb2, that I use in case of disaster recovery on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit desktop. Hence, I only use it occasionally; and purely for back-up purposes (active sync, User files). The properties for this drive are very strange (see attached image). They are mainly comprised of Chinese characters (for drive name, manufacturer, etc.) and a strange little cartoon character with a cape and rainbow on its head

I have had this drive for about 2 years. Further, I can't recall ever viewing the drive properties, e.g., in the My Computer window on any prior occasion. Nevertheless, these "properties" have me concerned about malware despite that windows defender, avast and malware bytes do not detect such. Has anybody seen this before? Should I be concerned? How can I change the way the all strange drive properties are displayed?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.80 GHz
4GB (2x2GB) OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500
NVidia GeForce 8400 GS
1.5 TB internal disc storage

Answer:very strange drive properties display have me concerned about malware

Sorry if this is a little late, and not very specific, but the display you're seeing is malware related. About 3 weeks ago, I had a customer's pen drive which had been provided to me to restore some backup files to a new hard drive. When I tried to stop the drive before removing it,my Windows 7 system notification area displayed the drive with a rainbow icon and a string of Chinese characters very similar to what your system properties picture shows.

I did full scans with an updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and NOD32, which detected and removed 1 infection. The bug detected by NOD32, was one of those generic identifications that wasn't very helpful.

So, here I am, confident you have malware on the drive, but unable to identify it or the risks it poses.

Quite often when copying an EXE file to thumb drive I get this alert

What does it mean. I have not had any install problems so far.

Thank you

Answer:Lost EXE file properties while copying to a thumb drive

Every file has properties attached to it. Basically , it's information about the file, like this:

In the case of the EXE file above, there isn't much to worry about if they are lost when they are copied. The only time that properties really cause a problem is when you lose the information from photographs and documents. The information may be used by other programs to load information, or to show information about the file.

Basically, Windows is just telling you that the properties will not be copied with the file, and it's checking to see if it's OK with you if they get lost in the copy. It isn't usually a cause for concern.

Hi SevenForums, this seems like a great forum and I hope one of you can figure out my problem. I have x2 1.5TB WD CaviarBlack HHD. I have my primary drive partitioned to about 900GB for C:\ with 500GB unallocated. The second drive is for backup and is formatted as Dynamic with all space except a static 500GB partition going to auto-backup. I believe when I setup Windows I gave 500GB to the backup partition as well, but it has since grown automatically to allow for backups. It is now full and it shouldn't be.

Anyway, the reason it's full is because of some oddly unaccounted for space on my primary C:\. When I look at WinDirStat, the C:\ is supposedly only using 245GB. However, when looking at drive properties or in Disk Management, it shows that 595GB are being used! I can't figure out where the extra 250GB is going. So weird and I know it's not a backup since the backups automatically go to the other hard drive.

Here is a picture of WinDirStat (C:\ only) along with C:\ properties.

Answer:Unaccountable Disk Usage - WinDirStat vs Drive Properties

App's for slightly twisting this post's string, but Googling and forum searches, led me here to people who seem capable of doing what many are confronted with not knowing how to do it, ie; I've got 6,000 plus shortcuts on an external hard drive (cross referencing files in other folders throughout the EHD) and half of these shortcuts list the wrong drive letter for 'start in' and 'target'.

Since 'we' have to live with EHD's drive letters changing rather rogue-ishly, once the shortcut problem is noticed, it's usually pretty late and so to avoid the monumental task of manually changing the drive lettering in numerous shortcut's properties (where users inadvertantly create shortcuts without noticing the EHD drive letter is not what 'we' expect), I've found only this forum's members addressing how to enmass change shortcuts.

Again, my issue (as well as I'm sure for many, many other users too) is that I/We have many, many folders on an external hard drive and each folder contains many shortcuts to files located in that external hard drive's other folders, but half of these shortcuts have the 'wrong' drive lettering listed in the shortcut properties 'start in' and 'target'.

So if some generous person could illustrate here how to write the scrpting for such a 'powersshell.pf1' file, I'm sure many. many other users would immensely appreciate it.

Answer:Changing the drive lettering in numerous shortcut's properties

I might. It would have to wait until the week-end, as I don't have time during the week. I think it would be much easier to code than to script. Would you be happy with a small .net .exe UI containing current Drive Letter of the EHD to modify the shortcuts on, and then a from and to Drive Letters? You would have to remember that it is for ALL shortcuts, no exceptions.

This morning I attempted to view the properties of one of my drive in Windows explorer. Properties is a selection on the context menu, but clicking it does absolutely nothing. I have 3 drive in my system and the same behavior is true for all of them.

To add to the mystery, properties works fine for files, directories and Computer. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1 fully patched.

Anyone have a clue on this one?

Answer:Can't view drive properties -- strange, weird, bizarre!

Hi;

I have a folder of home videos that I back up to a USB key with Syncback. The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder. But here's the thing; If I right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties', it tells me I have 564 files in 85 folders, taking 2.67Gb.

However, if I open the folder and search for *.* to show all the files, then select all, right-click, 'Properties', it tells me I have 2224 files in 249 folders taking 6.41Gb. Still, at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says 649 items selected.

This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key.

Treesize also shows 2.67Gb for both folders.

In fact as far as I can figure, what with everything else on the same USB key, there wouldn't even be room for a 6Gb folder.

I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see.

Can anyone please explain this anomaly? I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out!

Dear Forum,

I have enquired with a few different sources and think this is the best forum.

I am after some information as to how to change the properties of a write protected USB External Hard Disk Drive.

I am some what confused as to the information that I have been provided and do not know how to do it in plain English and if it looks correct to the professionals on here.

This was my question:

What back up would you suggest?
I also have an issue with a USB 2GB Removable Disk that is write protected how do I change that property?
I have tried connecting it to different computers and it still comes up with the same message that the external drive is write protected.
I do not know how to make a drive write protected.
I have noticed that some of the items have .xml and it was used for a back up program for Memeo that came with another USB External hard drive.

I also wish to know how you could gain the zip.up file.
If you require any further information, please let me know.
I am only new to computers. I would like to use the disk again, preferably not loosing any data.

I have a ton of docs in GD, but when I go to open them remotely, they will come up, but I can't "open" them and work on them. That is, they will open in the GD window, I can read them, there's a print option, etc, but you can't just open it in Word, say, so you can work on it.

This has to be simple, but I'm confused.

I have a pc with 2 disc drives. I can play a disc showing photos but if I insert a new CD and try to save a Word document it refuses to save it.

Answer:Can't save document onto disc in CD drive

What do you mean by "refuses to save it"? What error message(s) appear? Can't write to the CD? Can you burn any new data like songs, or new pictures to this CD burner?

My boss has a special network folder mapped only to his PC. He keeps a lot of xls and doc files that are for his eyes only. One of the xls files refuses to save, the error message states that the "file is currently in use". No one else has it open, or even has access to it's saved location.

He can still save a copy with "Save As.." but he can't even manually delete the original file afterwards.

I'm thinking it might be a hung process, but I wanted to see if someone here has a solution/explanation. I'm going over to mess with it now, and will check back later to update.

Answer:Can't save xls document to Network drive

mjm, you might want to take a looks at "file streams"

File Streams

as this could be a hint of why he can't save or delete the file.

When I build a system last year, I followed instructions on a website to move the Document folders (My Pictures, Videos, Downloads, etc.) in Win & to a different HDD (other than the SD where Win 7 was installed).

The first admin account that was created and used to make this change would not be impacted but all subsequent new accounts would have their document folders location changed. So once I created the main admin account I created a second account after making the change and used the second account from then onwards. This way all my saved documents were being physically installed on the larger capacity second HD.

Unfortunately I cant find that step by step instruction (I believe it had something to do with changing the registry??)

Anyone know where I can find that instruction again. Also, is there a better way out there to accomplish this now?

Thanks.

Answer:Moving the Document folder (Win 7 64) to a different drive

Go to c:\users\username

Right click Documents
Click Properties
Choose the "location" tab

Should be clear from there

New one on me.
Just reformatted my 250GB WD HD and re-installed WIN XP OS 2002 and put service pack 2 on.
Only installed the essentials and a couple extras : MS Office 2007, ASUS drivers, EPSON printer drivers (with Arc Soft Print Creations), MS intellipoint for my wireless Mouse/keyboard, ATI drivers Catalyst Control Center, Firefox, KM Player and iTunes.
In my C drive properties I have 113GB Used and 119GB Free.
Ran a scan with both WinTree and JDisk Report and both show 6.5 GB being used (Windows 2.4GB, Program files 1.1GB, Files in the directory 2GB, and Documents and settings is about 1GB)
I just jumped into system properties and checked "show hidden files and folders" as well as Un-checked "Hide Protected Operating System Files"
Went into my Disk Manager to check on the partition in case I created a new one by accident. I knew I didn't cause I formatted and the C Drive NTFS Is healthy with 232.88GB.
Its a pretty simple setup
AMD 64 FX-62 Dual Core 2.8 GHz
2GB of RAM
ASUS M2A-VM HDMI Motherboard
Nothing in the PCI or AGP slots - all off the MB
I also have a 1TB Western Digital External HD hooked up into the USB with 365GB of files on it.

Any Ideas?
Thanks guys

Answer:Hard Drive not showing correct amount of free space in properties

113 Gb + 119GB = 232 GB, I don't see where the problem is. Are you asking why it isnt showing up as 250Gb? The manufacturers capacity is 250Gb when figure using the Decimal (Base 10) system where one Gb is 1,000,000,000 bytes. But the computer doesn't read it in Base 10, it reads it in Binary where the Gb =1,073,741,824 bytes so when you divide 250,000,000,000 by 1073741824 it equals 232.8306436538696 Gb

I have a buffalo 500gb external HD which I use mainly as a back up for photos/docs/vids etc., I have been deleting alot of uneccessary things on it and it now contains only 47gb of material, however when I click on the properties it is still showing 270gb free of 465gb, this means that there is still 195gb of material when in fact there is only 47gb of material on it in total - how can this be?? I have unplugged the buffalo drive, left it a while and replugged it in but its still showing (in the properties of the drive) that it has 270gb free of 465gb, very odd, thanks LAPTOPDUNCE

I know this is simple but it is the first time I have tried this. I have an e book stored in my documents and I want to copy it to a disc. I open the document and put a new disc in the d drive. Answer:Making a copy of a document to disc drive

You need to burn it to disc using your writing software (Nero?)

Also check:

Start--> Run--> services.msc
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is not disabled, and is started (you can just double click on the service to change its startup)
This will allow you to drag and drop directly to blank media in My Computer

Hi

I am installing some software on a laptop (Toshiba L300, Win XP pro, Dual core 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram)

I get an error message Invalid drive u: and the installation fails.

I followed an article in microsoft knowledge base to edit registry.

In shell folders there is an entry for personal which had u: in the data field.

The documents folder should be a network drive y: so I changed it to that.

The program installed but now when I try to open a document from the network documents folder it says I don't have permission.

How can I fix this?

I have been thinking about this problem.

I cloned the drive from an identical computer registered to jbloggs, then copied this clone to this laptop changed the computer name, user name and network documents folder to asmith.

Some of the registry settings and document ownership is still jbloggs.

Is there something else I should have changed somewhere?

Any help appreciated

Regards Melissa

My machine won't boot up unless I disconnect all of the Hard Drives. I still have my two SSD's (RAID 1) that have Windows 7 Professional installed still running fine.

I had one hard drive ST4000NM0023 (4TB) fail (had four of them), and so I replaced two of them with ST10000NM0096 (10TB) drives.

I had software backing up the failed drive, which was my D: (Documents & Program Files) drive. The backup drive F: (D Backup) has now been renamed my D: Drive, and I transferred all of it's files to a new F: backup drive.

I had to copy & paste everything from one folder over to another one of the same name because Windows 7 had automatically installed new folders with the proper icons on them (as per attached image). I had two of "My Pictures", "My Documents", etc.., with one having an icon and one not.

It seems like I had to move my files to the new folders or else my other programs couldn't seem to find the files they needed even though the the folders had the same name, minus the icon.

Copying files from folder to folder was very time consuming, and used all of the systems memory. I would successfully reboot the system after each successful transfer so I could restore the RAM back to 64GB.

I left the largest folder "My Documents" till last. After I successfully transferred the files in this folder over to the new "My Documents" folder with the icon on it, I tried rebooting the system and it would not work. I ... Read more

Hi, 3 weeks ago I added an external hard drive, to which I transferred my My Documents folders as well as some other stuff. All worked fine, Windows was happy with the new MyDocs location etc. However yesterday I attached my camera briefly via USB and subsequent to this, Windows seems to have renamed my external harddrive to F: instead of E: and also changed my document folders to "Jamie's Documents/Picture/Music etc." instead of "My Documents"

I've managed to rename the doc folders but not the drive. I don't personally care what it calls itself, but some programs are having difficulty finding relevant files.

Any ideas whats happened and how to reverse it?

Answer:XP has renamed my hard drive and Document folders!

To change the drive letter, go into drive manager under computer manager in the control panel, right click on the drive and change drive letter and assign it E:.(Make sure nothing else is using that drive letter other wise you will not be able to see one of them).
My 5 external drives are assigned letters starting from the end of the alphabet. This way if I plug some thin else in it doesn't conflict.

I have a worker that is not able to use windows search to find a specific text located in a file, the file is on a networked drive. They are able to get it to work on other computers just not that particular one. She has even set windows search to the correct folder the file is located on the network drive. So far I've reinstalled windows, made sure the index service was running and checked the sub folders and hidden files options in advanced search just in case, not sure what else to do, any suggestions?
