I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: word document on flash drive garbles in email

There are a lot of steps in between. Does the file open on the flash drive? What about when copied to the computer? What version of Word was it created with? Using standard fonts? Any special coding? Does the receiver have the same version of Word installed? Is the problem with just one recipient?

Hi,

I am developing an add-in for outlook that consists of creating a customized send button next to the standard one. when outlook is configured to use the word editor, when I add the customized send button to the command bar of the mail in edit mode, the add-in is also added in word document. The reason is that the word editor is activated in outlook. How can I tell my add-in not to add the button in word as well. I don't want to deactivate the editor word. There must be a way how to detect the opened application. I searched for my problem on the internet and people said to test if the kind of the document is word mail or word document. Here's part of my code that didn't work correctly:

//event triggered when item is opened

private void Inspectors_NewInspector(Outlook.Inspector i)

{

//some code to test if it is a maiitem, etc.

Word.Document document = (Word.Document)i.WordEditor;

if (document.Kind.ToString() == "wdDocumentEmail")

addsendbutton();

}

The problem is that the button is still showing at word level. Visual studio is not launching the condition on all the windows. So he?s adding it in word as well, although word document is a wdDocumentLetter.

I have 2 options in mind:

1- The code must not be called at new inspector level. Because this trigger is not launched in the case of the word document

2- The inspector from which we get the word editor is not the right one for word document (Word.Document ... Read more

I have a weird issue. Using Yahoo webmail, When I receive an email message with an attachment, the filename gets mangled when I try to download the attachment.. For example, an attachment is called 11530.csv. When I click to download it, I get this "scanning is complete and no viruses were detected" Norton Virus scan status message that Yahoo does automatically. When I click to download the file, the filename becomes a bunch of characters like this: "=_utf-8_B_MS0xMTMxMDgxXzAxMDM4ODU5XzAyXzI3XzEyLmNzdg==_="

Now, here is where it gets weirder - I can use Windows 7, (32 or 64 bit) or Windows XP and it makes no difference. I can use IE8 or IE9 and it makes no difference. I can log into my Yahoo mail on all of my computers and it makes no difference.

However, if I check my Yahoo mail with Google Chrome, the download works fine and the attachment filename is not mangled. It works as it should. Also, if I forward the message to a different email account and then forward it back to my Yahoo account, then it works as it should in IE8 and IE9.

I've tried clearing the cache and resetting IE settings. I've tried IE8 and IE9 and I've verified the problem on the same email account using 5 different computers, including a friends computer that has never been to Yahoo mail before.

I am baffled. Any idea what is going on here?

Thanks!

I have just bought a new laptop with word 2007 installed on a free trial. I have just about got grips with it but cannot see a way to email a document as an email rather than as an attachment using outlook, which seems to be the only option. Previous versions of word allowed you to email the document in 'Outlook express' or 'Windows mail' as they now call it. Is there a way of doing this other than copying and pasting?

Answer:email a document in word 2007

Click the Office button (top left) > Word Optrions > Customize > select All Commands and add 'Sent to mail recipient' to the Quick Access Toolbar.

I need to know how to send an email attachment via Microsoft Word to many different recipients.  I asked someone previously and they told me to go to mail recipients but it didn't work.  Is there a step by step instruction guide on how to do this so I don't have to keep typing the same document each time?  I have the document typed up ready to go right now.   I just don't know how to create an attachment and email to many recipients.  Any help is appreciated thanks.

Answer:need help with microsoft word document via email...

Open your email client and start a new outgoing email message, select the names of those to whom you want to send the document, and then depending on the specific email client click on either "attach file" or "insert file" or something similar and navigate to the file you want to send and double-click on it. That's it

I opened a word document from an email (attachment) and worked on it and hit "Save". I am unable to access all the work, and the "Search" is unable to find the document.
Can someone guide me how I can retrieve the file?

I am a newbie and I would appreciate any help urgently.

Thanks

Answer:Word document saved in Outlook email

The easiest way to figure out where your document went is to open an email message that includes an attachment, open the attachment, then go to File--> Save As. The Save As default path is always the same for emails, and the reason the search doesn't find it is because it is hidden in a temporary internet file folder. (Something like C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK) Chances are as soon as you click Save As, you will see the document sitting in the temp folder. Then instead of saving the dummy doc you opened, simply right click on the doc you want, and hit copy. Then paste it somewhere (like your desktop for easy access), and there it will stay! Hope this helps!!

I received a letter as an attachment via my ntl email account and opened the attachment which opens on word 2003. I could only see the date and my name on the document. A bit of exploring showed that the text of the letter was contained in a text box. I could not change the size of the text box or get to the text except by deleting the first part of the text to display the second bit. Using the menu option I could convert to frame and read text that way (a job rejection letter!)Anyway, I then forwarded the email to my yahoo email account, where the attachment was scanned and the document opened in all its glory, including the company logo and graphics.....So far I have checked that both documents are loading up the same version of word (same license number and version) and am stumped......I have norton installed on my PC so at the moment am debating if there is a problem with that when it is scanning the ntl delivered document (if it is) or maybe even if my outlook needs reinstalling.I can't blame ntl if the document forwards to yahoo ok.reopening the attachments for both sources several times and I get the same result so it isn't a one-off glitch.....Confused? Oh yes....

Answer:word document not opening properly from email

Word is opening the document differently from outlook. It opens it in report layout and I have to click on the actual page button to display the contents of the document. If I save the document and open it it opens up normally. very odd.

Peter

Answer:I cannot find a word document I opened as an email attachment

The file will be located in a folder somewhere in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\

"\AppData" is normally hidden
"\Temporary Internet Files" is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in Windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

Good luck in finding it, though.

The correct way is to save the attachment first, then open it
from the saved location, if you wish to edit it.

I removed the SmitFraud trojan from a customer's computer, and she reported that when she composed an email, the word "crap" appeared in her email three times. Sometimes, she composes her emails using MS Word and copies and pastes to Outlook Express, and she could not remember if she used Word this time or composed the email in OE directly.I removed SmitFraud using SmitRem, SmitFraudFix, RogueRemover, and CCleaner. The first time I did this, she encountered some remaining spyware the next day (XP Antivirus?), so I did the same thing and then followed up with a Hijack This log. I removed an entry that referred to "BrowsingSoftware", and that took care of most of the problem. Then, a few days later, she encountered her "crap" problem.I then tried running RogueRemover again. It did not find any problems, so I ran DSS and I am posting the logs from that run.I should probably mention that my customer is blind, and JFW refers to Jaws for Windows, which is a program that reads windows aloud. Hi,

Is it possible that when you save in Word (2000) it makes a backup copy on the C:?? I save all my work on a Floppy disk then put in my computer with printer (then print it). However recently my disk drive has been playing up and have lost everything on the disk.

So when I save something on a floppy it also creates a backup on the computers hard drive. (Saves file on Floppy A:\letter.doc and creates a backup on hard drive c:\backups\letter.bac)

I know you can create backups on word except it saves them in the same directory (in this case a:\ which is pointless since I lose all data on the disk)

Anyone tell me if i can do this?

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Answer:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. When I open a new document in Word, then open an older file, the new document closes and only the old one is displayed.Using Microsoft Office 2010, specifically Word.Windows 7 64-bitA bit of explanation, I often do research/writing for school or for fun. This issue has always happened, just one of those small annoyances. Here is the exact thing that is happening:1. I open a new (blank) word document, by clicking on the Word icon or by selecting "Open New Document" in the Word program.2. I open an older (saved) Word document, by clicking on the saved file, not by using the "Open" function in Word.3. The New (empty) document disappears, only the older document is open. Just wondering if there is a way to stop it.- I am not using the "Open" function in Word to open the older file, I am opening the older file by double-clicking it in the File explorer. When I use the "Open" function in Word, it does the same (basically "closing" the new file in order to open the old one). - I tried searching through Word's settings but couldn't find anything that seemed to relate to this behavior.- As per regular Word behavior, the new document is auto-na... Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.
Regards

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. Good Luck!

Hello

I am wondering how to make an hyperlink, from a main document, to a sentence of a sub document that got included through {INCLUDETEXT \\....docx} in the main document?

I posted yesterday this question in another forum.

I do not know how long it will take to get a reply in the other forum. I post the link to the details also in this forum, in order to speed up the process of getting an insight about a posible approach or solution for this problem. I hope this does not violate any of this forum's rules.

Thanks in advance

On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks

URGENT!! (Isn't it always?) I need to convert a multiple tab excel document to a word document. I read that I can save as a pdf, then convert to word but I have only Adobe Reader. If this can be done, is there a way to conserve the original format and the links in the excel doc?I would prefer leaving in excel but the customer needs a word document. Also, just in case I can convince to leave in excel -- is there a way to print the excel file as one document without printing each tab separately? If so, how do I ensure the formatting looks good to print as a regular 8.5 x 11 document? Thanks for any help.

I have a client with a problem creating new documents from the File > New > Word Document dropdown from Windows Explorer window. If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. Also when she tries to save the document with the Save As item it defaults to txt instead of a .doc file. I am thinking there are two different templates for these two seperate ways of opening or creating a document.

Hi, first of all my computer skills are just average. My question is this.
How do I go about putting my old emails on a flash drive for saving? I can use a flash drive, I use it a lot. But I don't know how to put emails on a flash drive at all. Thanks, Chuck

Answer:email on flash drive

Gmail has a facility for saving all your data into a zip file, this zip file contains a file in a weird format which when opened with notepad will let you see emails in a somewhat ugly but readable full original text way. It is a good idea to do it every so often for an emergency backup incase something happens to your online account, i would assume other webmail providers offer the same. If on the other hand you use an email program that stores the emails on your harddrive you will need to hunt through ALL your folders until you find where the program stores the files, likely locations include C:\ProgramFiles\(program name)\        or C:\Users\(your name)\AppData   . In some cases the appdata folder might be hidden so you will need to enable "show hidden files/folders" under "folder options"-->"view"  in windows file browser (windows explorer, i'm trying to say this in a way that does NOT confuse that with internet explorer).

Friends
Have any of you encountered damaged MS Word .doc 's via stashing them on a Flash Drive?
I've seen two instances of this on a Flash drive used in a Real Estate office, and fear the drive itself may be inflicting the corruption. The appearance is that the first page or so of the Doc looks fairly intact, but everything below is rendered as damaged hex code. I tried using a couple of the "repair word.doc" packages floating about but had no good effect. The damaged file can be opened by a text reader or Word itself, but scrolling about through one of them will lockup Word [office pro 2000 in this case]

thanks for any feedback on this issue.

Hi!

Thankfully, I haven't had to make use of this forum in a long time, and for once, it's not a virus issue! However, it is a concern to me, as I've lost valuable documents since this started.

Over the last couple months, I will occasionally receive an error when I am in Microsoft Word 2003, typing a document. I have gotten into the good habit of periodically pressing "Save" so that I don't lose my work. Ironically, the exact opposite has been happening. Every so often, when I press save, I will receive this message: "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error." It only gives me the choice to click "OK" or close out the box that popped up.

I save everything to a flash drive. Generally when I see this message, I can't touch the original document anymore, and when I click "OK" or close out of the box, it then says: "Word failed reading from this file (~WRL3289). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry." It changes the file name to something with a "~WRL..." and it doesn't let me save the document under any name whatsoever. Instead, Word closes the document but *doesn't* auto-save it as it would in a typical situation. It's not able to rescue these documents for whatever reason.

Sometimes I've been lucky and I've maneuevered my way around and opened up a read-only version of the document and saved it to my comp... Read more

Answer:Is the problem my flash drive slot or Word?

What I would do is just always save to the desktop or another easily accessible folder, then find the file and copy it to the flash drive. Then, if you want to verify that it copied successfully, copy it back to the hard drive and open it, and see if everything is all right.
The error message isn't clear enough for me to decipher it, but you may want to read the following forum posts, especially the part about the file system of the flash drive:

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=906300&SiteID=2

http://www.msfn.org/board/Word-cannot-complete-the-save-due-to-a-f-t94454.html

Also check for any updates to your version of Word; it wouldn't hurt.

Long story short, I bumped my flash drive, it appears slightly bent but was no longer recognized in the computer. I had multiple places look at it and all said nothing is physically wrong with it. I found one place that said they could help me recover the files for a fee of $750. I have files application files saved on this that I was working on for medical school, the most important one, I lost about two essays, so I'm not sure how much I want to pay to recover these.

I found these files on my computer but they are all under the usb drive so when I pull them up, it says device not recognized. Is there any way parts of them have been saved in some form on my computer that I could recover?

I'm guessing not but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. Also if anyone knows a data recovery place that doesn't charge so much money that would be great.

Answer:Flash Drive broken, recovering files via word?

Here's what I would do. Proceed at your own risk! The jack being 'slightly bent' has probably separated a solder joint that connects the chip (what ever is in there) from the jack. If you know a tech who 'solders' he can 'bust' it open, put a drop of solder on the break (or make a jumper), connect the device and get the data off, then thow it away...Not really a $750 job in my opinion.

Another option is to get a USB to USB connector cable, connect your device to the cable. Now start bending the jack on the device ever so slightly trying to make the broken joint make a connection. After each adustment plug the other end of the cable into the PC and see if it recoginizes. If not recognized, disconnect from the PC and try again.

You want to use the cable because the bending of the jack may damage the the USB connector on the PC and you don't want introduce a new issue. I've actually used this technique and once we had to hold the drive in place manually to keep the connection (may require more than two hands).

I just bought a new Flash Drive, and i found a problem. I copy and paste all my files from my old usb. When i try to open the word documents that i saved, it opens and then it says That the file need converting (encoding), but after i encode it, it just come out blocky not letters. Why is this happening? When i try to open it in my other USB it works...

HELP
Thanks

Answer:Flash Drive - Word Documents become corrupted need encoding!

Did you remove the new USB drive properly after copying the files? Using the "safely remove hardware" feature? If you unplug the drive while copying files or somethimes even when the copy dialog has closed, you will corrupt data.

Are you using the same computer for opening the files from your old and the new USB drive?

The problem occurred without warning after many previous instances of trouble-free copying of Notepad text into MS Word 2010. Here?s an example of what happens:-1. I type a sentence into Notepad.2. I then attempt to copy and paste it into an open MS Word file.3. The cursor in the resulting MS Word file stops blinking on completion of the ?paste? process. A few seconds later, MS Word indicates ?not responding?.4. I press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open the Task Manager.5. On doing this and clicking on the MS Word document in the Task Manager and selecting ?End Task?, a message box stating ? WINWORDC.EXE is not responding?, with 3 option buttons, pops up. One of the 3 option buttons is ?Close program?.6. When I click on ?Close program?, another message box pops up saying ?WINWORDC is trying to recover your information?. Then, a few seconds later, the MS Word document closes (but without saving the text copied from the Notepad file).

In Word 2010 there is a direct option to share and save any word file to SkyDrive directly simply by configuring your Windows Live ID. To Save your any doc file to SkyDrive follow the steps given below one by one and get your docment saved on your account directly from your desktop:
1. Open any Word document which you want to save to skydrive.
2.Click on File menu and then select Save to SkyDrive.
3. In the right panel th SkyDrive login page will start retrieving. As the page retrieves it will prompt you for Login credentials of yourWindows Live ID. Just give your ID and Password and login.
4. As you get login you will see your folders already present on your SkyDrive. Now you can save the document file to that folders or you can create a new folder and then click on SaveAs.
Now you can share and use your documents from anywhere in the world directly from your desktop via Office 2010. Happy Windows Computing !!!

Answer:transferring microsoft word 97/2000/XP (.doc) files onto a flash drive

Open Office files are the same as any other files in Windows. Files created in Open Office can definitely be saved and copied to a flash drive. It's very likely the user is just doing something wrong.

To save the file as an Office file:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Doc.../Save_Document

As an alternative to Open Office I often recommend people simply use Google Docs. Office documents can be opened in Google Docs and edited and saved in any Office format.

Just so I have it straight, when you say "opening up a brand new document" do you mean you have a blank document that you open, say on your desktop (as a shortcut), or does this happen when you click File then New.

Have you checked Options => Save to see if there is an option box to control this behavior?

I have made a brochure (containing a table)in MS Word97 in *.doc format. The brochure needed to be transferred to my mother-in-law's PC for printing as we don't have a printer. Anticipating compatibility issues (we use MS Office on a system running Win98SE; she uses MS Works on a system running WinXP), I made one page and opened it on her PC. The PC read and printed my test document and I assumed it would work. I then spent the day making the brochure, FTPing and downloading it to her PC. Now when I go to open the documents, Works says that it can't read them (I tried various options - double-clicking to open; selecting different *.doc file extensions from the drop down menu etc). I downloaded the Word97 viewer from Microsoft and it, too, claims not to be able to read the documents. Is there anything I can do to make her PC recognise these documents? And why can't different Microsoft word processors read each other's file formats??? Arrrrrgh! Please help!Jill

Answer:Word viewer will not read Word document

Any version of Microsoft Word should be able to read a document from the same or an earlier version of Word. As long as you have saved the document as Word Document (*.doc). Opening the document from within Word is the safest way.

I have an old document created in Word Perfect 5.1 saved on a floppy disk. My present computer has Windows 98 and Microsoft Word. I need to edit and print the old Word Perfect document. Can it be translated to Word? Thanks.

Answer:Transfering word perferct document to Word

You should be able to hit File-Open from Word. Change the files of type (at the bottom of the dialog box) to "all files, *.*" and just double-click the Wordperfect document. It should automatically convert it.

After that, if I were you, I'd go to Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. Change compatibility to Word document. Then, hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, go to Format-Paragraph and make sure line spacing is single; then change the font to Arial, Times new roman, or other Word font, as opposed to the old Wordperfect fonts.

Are you using Microsoft Word? Or WordPad? Word uses either .doc or .docx as the file extension, WordPad uses .rtf or .txt. If you've already named & saved the file yesterday, that's the file you should be looking for. Chances are the original is still good but any changes you made today probably didn't 'stick'.

Hello all,

On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.

Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.

Many thanks.

Hi,

I am not sure if this is possible in word, but say I have document A. I place document A within document x, document y, and document z. Is it possible to make changes to document A and have the changes updated automatically to documents x, y, and z?
I hope this makes sense.

Answer:Word Document within another document

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

Not sure how to describe this properly, so please be patient with me. I'm not as good with all the computer lingo and whatnot.Ok, the problem. For some reason my computer is having CONSTANT trouble every single day. I can be doing whatever, minding my own business, when the computer locks up, any and all programs quit responding. Sometimes, everything is fine and only takes a few minutes to get going again, which is still pretty irritating. Most of the time though, everything locks up and then finally, the mouse even locks and then the screen goes all frazzled and is a total mess, kinda like nasty reception on a tv. The computer ceases to work and has to be forced to shut down. I can get it back up and running, though sometimes warning me that it can't find the operating system, though that's pretty rare. This has been annoying me for months. I've thought it was due to viruses, but even with this computer clean, it still does this. I've thought it was due to overloaded hard drive, but it's nowhere near full. It seems to do this at least twice every single day and I've had bad luck with trying new computers these days. Can ANYONE offer ANY assistance? Parents swear it's virus, but I almost think that's just a quick write-off. Best friend hasn't a clue. If I need to give anything more, I will. I have been running anti-virus stuff on and off and it's STILL clean.

Answer:Computer locks up and the screen garbles?

Was having same problem so I uninstalled IE9 and reverted back to 8, now it works fine although I am sure there are some security issues that I haven't looked for yet. If interested, google remove IE9 and it will take you step by step through uninstall.

Boot into safe mode and go to add remove programmes.

Possibly Helpful Notes:
- Preceding the BSoD, any sound that was playing will loop for about half a second.
- Ran an AVG virus scan, and found nothing wrong.
- It tends to happen only upon bootup, or shortly thereafter, but it is very unpredictable. Generally, if the computer boots smoothly, it can run for hours without BSoD.
- I would describe the garbled display as every pixel shifted a random amount to the right/left, with a few pixels scattered everywhere as well.
Don't know if this will help. Sorry if I missed something!

Answer:Display garbles followed quickly by BSoD, unpredictable

My first post so please bear with me.
(Note: this is also posted on the Games forum as I was unsure where to put it).

::The Problem::

My nVidia GeForce (64 mb) 420 MX w/TVout
(my PC is a Dell Dimension 8200, about 3 yrs old)

Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations, and any other game along those lines that I try has serious issues with my graphics card. It flickers and randomly changes plots of land to black, ect.
For instance, in Warcraft 3, the peons have black squares flickering around them, and the trees will randomly look like they are Undead trees for a few flickers.
Also, a big fact thats important is that when the computers been on for 5 minutes, this problem doesn't occur. However, when it's been on for 3 hours, it happens instantly even if you restart it.
::What I've Done::

I updated the driver for the card, my DirectX to 9.0b, and troubleshooted it completely in Windows. I reinstalled the drivers, updated bios of my PC and called the Dell tech support line. The Dell guy and I worked for a while, adjusting settings and the hardware acceleration, to no avail. He told me that it was probably not a hardware problem, just a problem with a setting somewhere, but he had no idea what I have set wrong.

::History::
In October, the moniter that came with the computer caught on fire (no joke). So I went to Best Buy and got a Sony Flatscreen LCD moniter, which is very sweet (its model is SDM-HS73, and it tends to get hot when I don't have a fan running on it).

In my PC (Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit Operatins System - Service Pack 1 installed) whenever I plug in Flash Drive, the system creates short cut for all the folders in the Flash Drive. The folders and its contents are safe.

But I am unable to Safely Dismount the Flash Drive and the system on choosing Eject the Drive will display "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." message.

If I go through My Computer - Right Click on Flash Drive and then Eject the system shows the following message

"F: is Currently in Use. Save any Open Files on this disc, and then close the files or programs
using the files before trying again. If you choose to continue, the files will be closed, which might cause data to be lost.

Cancel Try Again Continue"

If we choose Continue, system displays "Safe to Remove Hardware".

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING ??

I am having a laptop with same OS and there when I plug in the flash drive it does not create any short cut and no such problems.

Both the systems are having Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 and are upto date on Virus Siglature update.

Well, I was going to type it all. But it goes on a whole lot longer than I thought.
Does anybody know what the problem is with this document & how I can fix it?
I use Windows XP Home & Word 2000.

Thanks.

Answer:Does Anyone Know How To Fix This Word Document?

Does this problem only affect this one document or all Word docs? Have you tried opening the document on another PC that has MS Office Installed? Have you tried using a different Word processing program? Have you tried to start Word in SafeMode?

If you don't have access to another PC with MS Office installed you can try to download a different word processing program such as OpenOffice to see if it will open the Doc. You can also try opening the document using Notepad (right click and select "Open With" and select Notepad)

To Open Word in SAFE MODE

1. Select Run from the Windows Start menu

2. Type winword.exe /a (you must insert the space before the /a
(You may also need to type the full file path of Windword.exe))

3. Click OK

Regards,
Rollin

Answer:Help with word document!

Retrieve in it word, then watch the box at the bottom of the screen as you file or save it as a .doc file, then review the ?xml info.

The Document Object Model (DOM) class is an in-memory representation of an XML document. The DOM allows you to programmatically read, manipulate, and modify an XML document. The XmlReader class also reads XML, however it provides non-cached, forward-only, read-only access. This means that there are no capabilities to edit the values of an attribute or content of an element, or the ability to insert and remove nodes with the XmlReader. Editing is the primary function of the DOM. It is the common and structured way that XML data is represented in memory, although the actual XML data is stored in a linear fashion when in a file or coming in from another object.
There is plenty of useful information on xml documents and file structure in the Microsoft knowledge base, or even with a Google search.

I've just reinstalled Word 2000 and adjusted page set-up to suit the margins and top/bottom spacings I prefer. I can't remember how to save these margin settings so that they appear each time a Word document is started. Can someone help? Thanks in anticipation.

My friend have a problem. When I open a new document in MS Word I have no empty sheet, but one of his old document.

Answer:MS Word - New Document

He probably accidentally saved it as normal.dot, which is default Word blank template. Tell him to search for normal.dot and rename it to a more suitable title depending on the contents of the doc.

Word will recreate the normal.dot when it isn't found.

Question: New Word Document

I'm using Wins2000 professional. Every time I open a new document in Word I get three pages. I would like to know how I can get it back to only one page when I open up a new document.

Answer:New Word Document

hmmm, that's a weird one.

Have you added any new macros to your normal.dot template??

Anyway, try doing a search on your system for normal.dot and when you find it, rename it to normal.old and then start Word again and see what happens.

If you did not make any changes to your normal.dot template, and the above works, then you can just delete the normal.old

hi, there's a few ways to do it, either with software, or online which is probably easier if you don't do it that often.

suggestions: google "convert .pdf to .doc software" for a software search or
follow this link which i normally use: http://www.convertpdftoword.net/ (quick, easy, no installations)
