Preferred Solution: hard drive wipe program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an old Thinkpad that I'd like to give away. I deleted all the files, but they can be recovered with Unerase. I could download something like CCleaner on my other computer and copy it over, but I don't have another PC with a 1.44 drive and the USB drive doesn't recognize any of the USB drives I've tried.

I tried using the oldest (and newer) USB drives I had.

Add New Hardware Wizard
Found PC Multimedia Device or USB Mass Storage Device
Search in C:\Windows
Windows was unable to locate a driver.

Under Device Manager, I have a ? next to USB Mass Storage Device

Systemworks doesn't have anything.
I tried installing WIn 7, but the drive doesn't recognize the CD.
I tried installing Win 8, but I need to update Windows first.

Does anyone have a way I can permanently wipe the empty space through Windows or am I going to have to take out the hard drive and tell the person they have to buy a new one?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Need to wipe hard drive w/out being able to d/l a program

How about download something to another computer and then burn it to a CD or DVD disc? You mention the Thinkpad has a DVD drive, so you should be able to then copy the installer off the optical disc and then install it in Windows XP on the Thinkpad.

I need a program that would easily wipe the C drive but leave the recovery partition alone.

any ideas what to use? need something free and easy.

Ive also read that starting with windows Vista, a format does a basic hard drive wipe. so is this basic wiping of the drive enough for the home user?

Just wondering what others use. thanks.

Question: Wipe a hard drive?

Hey,

I am very new here... in fact this is my first post thingy so yeah I don't have a clue if i'm posting this in the right place or not but basically...

I have mucked up my computer quite badly by letting virsus attack one way or another and becuase of the infection its had on my system files I have had to delete quite a lot of them. therefore my computer in now unbareably slow and i wish to wipe the hard drive clean and start from scratch.

I went to pc world in search of tips and help they told me to use the 'reinstallation disk' so after like an hour of searching for this disk, i found it and followed the instructions in the manual. i put the disk in and restarted the computer, pressed the button it told me to press and yet and option for the computer to 'boot from the cd' did not appear, i tried this repeated for another hour before getting very angry and giving up , so basically i was wondering if there is another way of wiping the whole computer without using the disk which doesn't seem to like me :S (keeping in mind i struggle with these things quite bad)

if anyone has any suggestions at all i would cry with thanks seriously

xx

Answer:Wipe a hard drive?

Yeh, your in the right place! What did PC World tell you to do? Normally once you've put the recovery disk in, it should sort its self out, and take you step by step through the process.

Also what brand and model number is the laptop? (normally written on the underside)

After getting a nasty trojan and removing it my PC is in a real bad way.

I have done the things sugested, cleaning, defrag and program removal.

I now want to wipe the HD and start from scratch, all docs and pics etc have already been backed up.

Once the PC has booted up I can see no route that allows a full restore, HP helpdesk suggested trying F10 boot menu, I have tried F8, F10 and F12 menu without success.

When I run the XP cd it gives 2 options repair or install new. repiar does not cure my problems, new install gives a warning about installing 2 operating systems, so I have not done it.

How do I wipe my Hard Drive?

If I go into add and remove programs can I unistall everything?

If I go START then RUN is there a funky command that will dl the trick?

Thank you in advance for looking at this thread

I do not understand the part about installing 2 systems.
when you insert your system cd it should only have 1 OS on there (or have you modified it).

If you still want to clear your hard drive this application will do it and it is free but if your OS disk is corrupt you will not be able to re-install it so take care

Hoping somebody can help with this. I have an IBM PS1 to get rid of. Somebody told me I could sell it, but I doubt that. What I do know is, it's not leaving the house until all my data is erased.
The computer doesn't have a modem, so it can't go online.
The only way to feed anything into it is with a floppy disk.
Given those facts, is there a way to eradicate everything?

Or, is this such a sorry specimen, that not even the hardiest devotee of antique computers would want it as a donation? Should I just forget about trying to preserve the machine, and physically wreck the hard drive?

Thanks so much!

Question: hard drive wipe

hello i need help big time with my Toshiba satellite with windows 7four years ago the bottom of my computer got a little wet my battery started to smoke. so i took out the battery right away. after that i thought the whole thing was trashed so i kept it in a room as i was moving my friend pointed out that it should run without a battery as long as i have it plugged into the charger, she was right. my computer works and some days it does not . i wanted to factory reset it but i cant. i know about the when turning on hold down zero but my computer is really old and my keys don't work so i use a wireless key board now and it wont work with this. so then i thought maybe if i wipe my hard drive that did not work. then i did some more research and one place said to delete the main administrator and make a new one that's what i did. now every time i try to delete something it says i do not have the permission and that i need to get it from the old administrator but that does not show up anywhere. So now i just want to wipe out the whole hard drive and start from new with nothing on my computers but the things it mainly came with. It works sometimes but then sometimes it does not and when i try to go on it. i turn it on and it makes a loud beeping noise at me. Can someone people help me this is driving me crazy.

Repairs that it would possibly need to be reliable could exceed the value of the laptop eaily.Have you considered buying new or buying a healthy used computer to replace this one?As far as wiping the drive goes, there are many ways to do this. I generally use the system recovery or Windows OEM disc and delete the partition and recreate and format it. Other methods include writting 1's and 0's to the entire drive to cover up old data by erasing the binary info.

Lately i have been having virus problems. These are the symptoms:

-unexpected standby
-my computer tries to dial-up while i am on the internet
-system restore says no changes can be made
-windows key acts stuck, but is not physically stuck (when i press "r", run comes up, etc)
-certain ctrl alt delete patterns don't work
-left shift key doesn't work for q, w, e, r, t, y, u, and c.
-right shift key doesn't work for a, i, o, and p.

i reinstalled windows xp pro and reformatted the hard drive, thinking that it would clean the hard drive, but i still have the same virus symptoms. I heard about programs like DBAN that wipe the hard drive, but i don't want to delete the drivers that i need for the graphics card, sound card, etc.

i just want to start over new.

Answer:How do i wipe my hard drive?

To completely wipe a hard drive (and viruses) you have to do a low-level format. Dban or Active Killdisk will work.
This will, unfortunately, wipe it clean. Meaning you will have to reload drivers

If it is a Dell, just buy a CD (about $12). If it is not, create a bootable DOS flash drive ( http://www.megaleecher.net/Make_Bootable_USB ), copy the i386 folder to it, boot it, and try it that way.

sure, make sure you dont need anything backed up.you will need to set the bios to boot from cd which it already likely does and reboot the computer while the xp cd is in the rom.the screen will display "press any key to install" while booting do that and that will start the windows xp installation.delete the partition and remake itand this should clear is off drivers are typically no biggie, as long as you have the network card your good to go you can always download

Answer:Hard Drive Wipe Out

The easiest way is to just start the install and when prompted let "windows 7 install" format the disk.
It will probably save the old XP to a folder called Windows old but all you need to do is delete it after the install.

Have had annoying Spyware/Virus problems that seem to recur. Am considering totally wiping out the C drive and reloading XP, drivers and my
personal document and photo files.

What's wrong with doing this? How difficult would it be?

Can Windows XP be simply reloaded from the (Gateway) Operating System disc? (Is there a "boot" program on the hard drive that's needed?)

Seems to me this may be easier than spending many, many hours researching spyware/virus problems in an attempt to clear them (have used various tools such as "cwshredder" and Spysweeper to clear up some problems without total success).

Answer:Should I Wipe Out My Hard Drive?

We geeks typically like to prevail over scumware but at the last resort a reload always does the trick.
The restore CD that comes with the gateway should completely wipe out and reload your system. ALL DATA WILL BE LOST DURING THIS PROCESS SO BACK UP WHAT YOU NEED FIRST!!!!!!!!!

It's typically as easy as putting the CD in the drive and booting the system. The cd is bootable and should give you a menu of options to choose from.

Am thinking of getting a new comp. Im gonnna wipe hard drive of my current comp with Eraser or BC Wipe.
Problem is im only about semi-computer literate. Some of the stuff instructions on doing it seem hopelessly complicated. Is it really this complicated?

Answer:Hard Drive Wipe

Hi,

Nope, piece of cake as they say.

If you are running XP, then simply go to Start, My computer, select the drive you want to format and select format...away it will go and you will have a drive that is ready to be used..

If using Win98, then make a boot disk from Bootdisk.com, then fdisk, remove all partitions, create a partition, activate a partition, shut down, reboot, format the partition when it comes back up, shut down again and you have a formatted drive ready to go.

Question: Hard Drive Wipe

Informal poll. How effective do you guys think wiping your hard drive really is?

I was talking to a guy at a computer repair shop who said he can look right through a wiped hard drive if he really wants to.

He said in the past he's been hired by lawyers, private investigators, law enforcement, etc. to recovered deleted information from all kinds of people's hard drives. Like a lady who suspected her husband of cheating had him find emails to his mistress and online bank transactions where he sent money from their account to his mistress on an old hard drive and stuff like that. She was able to take him for all he was worth in divorce court because of the information this computer guy recovered. The guy had just assumed the information was deleted and gone forever.

All kinds of stories like that. He said if he has someone's computer he basically has the ability to find out anything and everything about them in their life. He said he finally had to stop taking work like that because it made him feel too creepy to bust people like that so easily. Doesn't matter if they used wipe free space or not. He can get around it.

What do you guys think?

Answer:Hard Drive Wipe

Well if you just reformat the information can be recovered However if you run a program like Darik's Boot And Nuke that writes 0's across your entire hard drive it's very hard to recover data. Next to impossible.

Answer:Help with hard drive wipe

You can copy any files you want to save to cd or other removable media ( and do this from time to time as a backup)

To wipe the drive and reinstall XP:

enter BIOS ( Setup ) and set the first boot device as CD/ROM. Put your XP Disc in the drive and disconnect all external peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB, or wireless. Any internal USB card should also be removed.

If you are using an upgrade version installation CD, you'll also need a CD with an older operating system ( Windows 98SE or Windows ME ) to complete the install. Also Make sure you have the 25-digit product code for the Windows XP CD.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" . . do that and you will be able to delete any or all partitions and recreate one or more, then proceed to formating and installing XP.

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up. The prompt will appear after every reboot, but do not press any key on subsequent reboots. The setup process will continue with no action required from you.

If you do not get that message, and if you have another optical drive, try the XP CD in the other drive.

If you are installing on SATA drive, there is an additional step:

I no longer need my Mac because I have an IBM. The Mac isn't worth anything to sell. I want to dispose of it in the garbage, but I'm afraid of someone taking it and seeing files I have saved on my hard drive -- social security #'s, financial stuff, etc.

The problem is that when I turned on the computer, I can't get anything to show up on the screen. (I haven't used the computer for 6-12 months now.) I turned up the brightness and contrast and still could not see anything. The computer did boot up.

My husband said he could just take a hammer and smash the hard drive unit so that we could toss it out.

Any suggestions on what to do???

THANKS!
Sue

More than likely, noone is going to mess with your pc once you trash it. But, if it would make you feel better, just let your husband smash the hard drive.

Did these steps format c:/fs:ntfs; then message says all data will be lost; chose y and enter; then message says cannot run because volume is in use by another process. Format may be run if volume is dismounted first. It asks if I want to force a mismount. I chose y and then message says can't unlock the dirve. The volume is still in use.

How in the world do I get around this or unlock whatever it's talking about?

Do you happen to have Daemon Tools loaded? If so, you'll want to unmaunt any "virtual drives" created. This is just a shot in the dark, but I've heard of this before.

I think my lad has caught a nasty on his hard drive and I'm having problems reinstalling windows 7, at the moment he has a Barracuda 7200rpm 1 TB hard drive and it started behaving very strangely.
I've managed to reinstall windows 7 but there are 2 partitions on it that refuse to go, one is 99.9mb that is marked system reserved but there is another one of 200mb that totally refuses to go.
I can't get auto run to work to load any anti virus, can not connect to internet to download any anti virus.

There is no need to log in. You need to go into the BIOS and set the first boot device to the CD drive, exit and save changes. Then insert the XP cd and Restart the computerTo reach the BIOS in most computers, you reboot the computer, when the initial black and white screen shows, startt tapping the Delete key

Answer:Wipe the Hard Drive

If you're just going to reinstall your operating system (depending on the system), you can use the operating system CD to perform this. You can also use diagnostic software provided by the hard drive manufacturer.  Do you know who manufactured your hard drive...and what the model number is?I can then provide you with a link to download the software you need to do this.

would really like to do this my self,,going to the computer shop wont let me learn anything.
I now have a NEW full version of XP, other 2 computers I built used my first XP Pro, disk and I copied it to do the 2nd,,it worked just fine,,this one says Im missing a lot of files at boot up.
Ant suggestions??????? Thanks for all your time..Alex

There are several programs that will completely wipe a hard drive clean, even to government standards if you like. There's Darik's Boot N Nuke, which will create either a bootable floppy or CD and you can start the machine with it and then choose the type of wipe you want to do. Then you need to re-format and install the operating system.

I have a an Acer laptop that I'm going to sell and I downloaded DBAN (Deriks Boot And Nuke) which I was told would wipe my hard drive. I burned it to a CD as instructed and was told to put it in cd/dvd drive and boot to disc.
Can't get into BIOS as instructed...restart PC, as soon as logo appears punch the F2 key at the bottom left of the screen, which I do but the what I get has no choice to get into BIOS. I did everything I could think of punching the up and down and left to right arrows in that blue window but nothing for BIOS. Any easier way to "boot to disc" than what I'm told? I've been fighting with this thing for 4 days and the only way to run DBAN is from the cd/dvd drive. Any help at all please....... barb

Answer:trying to wipe hard drive

can you get into bios setup - when the computer posts WITHOUT the DBAN disc in
On the post screen it will say to enter setup press and name a key
OR there may be another message for boot options press and again name a key
The BIOS setup changes the boot priority order for all boots
the boot options key only changes it for the ONE time boot
Have you checked it is F2

I do not understand this
as soon as logo appears punch the F2 key at the bottom left of the screenClick to expand...

has the laptop got a keyboard and if so - what does bottom left of screen refer to please
the usual procedure is to keep tapping the F2 or whatever key is shown as enter setup, immediately the computers posts

After getting a free virus protection program (I have norton but it doesn't seem to scan everything even on a full scan) and found that through it and Avast I have a multitued of viruses and maleware eating up my computer such as: vundo, click, and fotomoto. So my question is. If I popin my os disk that came with my laptop and reinstall windows xp will I be safe? Through one of the many pop ups I've seen recently I saw something about registry corruption. So that's my biggest question.

As with most netbooks it doesn't have a CD drive and already came with windows XP installed. Can anybody give me any insight into how I can accomplish this please?

What is the best way of wiping clean the hard drive of my G550 ? I'm passing on the laptop to a friend but wish to ensure that previous data is erased. I intend to reload windows 7 before passing it on. Is it simply a case of going back to the factory settings with one key recovery, or will this leave some data at risk of security issues? Many thanks

Answer:How to wipe hard drive of G550

hi MikeTomkinson,

Yes One key recovery is the best way to go about wiping the data off and install a Windows Operating system.
OKR will not leave any trace of your Data on your Drive C: where the Windows is

- But if you have another partition like drive D: it will remain the same after recovery and you will have to reformat the Drive D:
Just do a rightclick on the D: and choose format to erase all of its contents

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

Hi all, new here. great place for an aspiring computer geek like myself. I had a Dell dimension 3200. it was about 5 years old. it started having issues, and was very slow. (esp with Photoshop!) I got an external hard drive to move all my stuff to and free up the memory. Then i added 512 RAM. Got high speed internet. the monitor died around Christmas time. (so hubby got me a beautiful flat wide screen ) Then it got itself a Trojan or 2. ugg. It was driving me insane and acting up and i wanted to throw it in the lake. It officially flitzed out 2 weeks ago, it kept randomly restarting itself, and not turning back on. (it took me to that last good configuration page but wouldnt go and configure itself.) it made angry beeping noises at me from inside the tower. the last thing it said was TRSDK Error 32 TRS DK_ERR_unknown05 ver or something like that. That's when i said to it for the last time, got in my truck and and went and got us a new computer. luckily i had most of my stuff transferred to the external HD. My Pop is without a 'puter and I am going to give him the old Dimension, since i just put $100 worth of RAM in it. it will suit his purposes just fine. (basically typing letters and using the internet) and easier for him, not having to go to the library to use the internet. The Dell is in need of being totally wiped out and re installing the OS. (xp sp1 came with it, then i will have to update it to SP2 again) so how do i do all that? Thanks in ad... Read more

Answer:Want to wipe my hard drive and start again

You will spend more in time and money then 50. Have the shop do it.

You need xp version disks that match what you have. If your system is OEM you need a OEM dvd
You need to identify and have ready any and all mainboard drivers.
You need whatever programs you want to us on disk ready to install
You would boot the xp dvd via the bios which will begin install.
You use install to wipe the drive, repartition and install

Answer:Wipe Hard Drive or Reload

Greetings, iflyrc...

Set your boot order to 'CD first', and boot to the XP disk...you'll be presented with options to delete/recreate the partition(s) (which I recommend), and to full format as NTFS (which I also recommend) - you should then have a pristine drive on which to install Windows...make sure you catch up with any hardware drivers and Windows service packs and updates after you install...

Good luck, and keep us posted...

Answer:Need To Wipe Hard Drive Without Lossing OS

No, there's no way to actually wipe the file system without getting rid of your operating system. Instead, let's make sure that's the problem before we continue with that. First upgrade to SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If that doesn't help then we can test the file system. Open an elevated command prompt (Start>type cmd>right-click>Run as administrator) and run the command chkdsk /r/ f. It may take 2-3 hours to complete, so you can leave it running unattended.

Good luck to you. Let us know how it works out.

Go to the RUN command and type MSCONFIG. You will get a screen come up saying 'System Configuration Utility'.Click DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP, then click back to NORMAL STARTUP. Then click APPLY then CLOSE. Windows will then ask you to reboot. Click RESTART.You machine will then restart, when the BIOS has finished checking and it about load windows, a menu should appear with the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, in a sort of DOS looking mode.Enter Recovery console, then it may ask you to log onto a Windows directory. You will need the Administartor password for this. You should eventually get to a c:\windows\ prompt. Type Help or ? i think then, you should see Format. Type FORMAT C: WARNING! All data on non-removeable drive C will be lost. Do you want to continue? Well its up to you?

I'm planning on buying a new computer soon. Although I don't have anything that important or personal on my hard drive right now, I would prefer it to be completely clean before getting rid of it. Do you know a program or an application that would help me achieve this effectively, besides running over it with my car a few times?

Thank you
