Solved: FTP & Ping Unreachable - But I CAN Browse WWW

Question: Solved: FTP & Ping Unreachable - But I CAN Browse WWW

This is driving me nuts! I have no problems at all with connecting via the WWW and Firefox/IE. However, any attempt to use FTP results in a time-out. The FTP client site said to try pinging but I find that ping times out as well. Could someone please help a clueless non-techie? I have no idea how to even begin troubleshooting this.

Thanks a bunch.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This has been addressed all over the internet, but I have tried almost every solution offered, and still have had NO luck. I can ping but not browse!
I have DSL from AT&T (spent hours on the phone with them), and they have reinstalled every line and jack in our house. Filters are installed before the phones. It's a speedstream 5100 modem. Not wireless and no router, as this is the only pc here.
I have tried all the solutions they had to offer, such as turning on and off the modem, uninstalling connection and reinstalling connection. Lines were tested and are fine. I used the self-support tool. It says fine those first 10 minutes when I can browse, then says no connection when I can't. But I can still ping. They ran out of anything it could be on the phone company's end. The problem has to be here.
Ok, this may be long, but I want to cover everything, and I'm not very good at this. This is a stupid problem though, so I'm sure it can be fixed! Any help is so welcome.
Following any suggestions made on websites online, I have both automatically and manually set the DNS addresses. I have pinged both myself and my ISP successfully. I seem to be able to ping with a number or a yahoo.com type address. I can sign into yahoo and msn messenger. I even have internet connection in IE for about 10 minutes after I reboot. Then one page just wont load, and no more will either, until I reboot. I can ping all day long though. When I asked the unloaded page to diag... Read more

Good day
I am in need of some assitance. I apologize if my message is long, but I want to provide all necessary information to solve my problem as I am at the end of my rope.

I am unable to browse on the internet, I have tried many things to resolve the issue, see below:
-In LAN setting, I tried to with Automatic connection detection checked and unchecked
-Deleted cookies and browsing history
-Renewed IP address
-Flushed DNS
-Used Winsock repair
-Tried to repair TCP/IP (suggestion from a post a saw on this site)
-Disabled Anti-Virus, Firewall, and spyware
-Installed Firefox
-Formatted and reinstalled Windows

Even after reinstalation, problem still persist. I am able to ping my IP address and other web sites (yahoo) Funny thing, if I enter the web site address in myself, like Google, I can get to the page, but after that it does not work, and it is not for every sites, only a few sites. Before reinstalation I could not browse the internet, but I could still play online games. Before that, I had the same problem, then a new windows update got installed and I could browse again, but only for a week, then problem came back.

I use Windows XP, I have a DSL LAN connection with a Linksis router with another computer which uses Windows Vista (that computer's connection is working fine btw)

Below are logs I took with "ipconfig /all" and "Highjackthis"

Had a virus on my XP machine so I finally reformatted it with Sp3 and now I can ping anywhere but can not browse. Have reformatted and reinsalled XP 3 times and same problem.

Have tried the original nic which was working before and a wireless usb nic

Any advise will be welcomed

Thanks in advance

Answer:[SOLVED] Can ping but can't browse

Lets take a peek at your environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I've been looking around but I've yet to find a solution that actually fixes this. Our directly connected desktop can ping using domain names but I can't browse and programs can't access the internet (steam for instance). Already switched cables and the router is working as every other computer wirelessly and directly connected work. Also I can ping the NIC and it works.

I'm using vista business sp2.

Hello all. I've read through countless threads with similar problems, but have had no luck fixing this issue. Here's a quick rundown:

- Home network, 2 computers (1 wired, 1 wireless), both running vista pro, both having the same issue.
- Issue started when the modem and router were unplugged to move furniture. When they were plugged back in, we could no longer connect.
- Can ping google, but can't load page
- Can't connect to google IP either
- Can't connect in any browser
- Windows firewall is disabled
- No other firewalls installed
- Ran nortan removal tool
- No proxy being used, browsers aren't configured to connect via one
- Reset winsock
- Flushed DNS
- ISP said their able to connect to us, and they see no problems on their end
- Windows troubleshooting report says "website (microsoft.com) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts".
- Tried a new router and modem. No combination of the 4 worked. Reset all to factory defaults and updated each. - Using automatic DHCP configurations and automatically assigned settings
- Tried using public various public DNSs

I'm sure there's things I'm forgetting - feels like I've tried everything!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi I'm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on my Acer 5100 via a Belkin 7233-4 wireless router and Firefox 3.5.5. Since moving the router a week ago I've had continual problems browsing the web. My wife's Linux netbook and son's laptop work fine.

I get a good wifi signal and the router shows local and internet. I can navigate via IP address to the router's admin page. Most of the time I can open igoogle and google mail, but I most can't navigate beyond there with bookmarks or site names - even if using search results. Then, all of a sudden it works fine for half a day, then reverts to almost nothing! Same on IE, FF and Chrome!

I've found that for may sites I can ping via cmd prompt, but can't navigate to them via web addresses. I have not changed anything on the laptop other than flush DNS.

Please help - the laptop is virtually useless!!

To put it simply, I'm just trying to successfully ping machines attached to a hub for now. Here is the setup:

5 Port ethernet Hub
Computer connected to port 1
Linux machine connected to port 2
Linux machine connected to port 3

Both linux machines have (different) static IP addresses. None of this is connected to any outside network, internet, etc. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with this setup because I can't successfully ping the Linux machines from my computer and I'm not sure what the issue is.

Answer:Ping-Destination Host unreachable?

Are the assigned ip address to each machine on the same subnet?

for example if I set the following ip addresses

1 - 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
2 - 192.168.1.2 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
3 - 192.168.1.3 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0

so each computer is on the 192.168.1 network.
In this example each computer would be able to ping each other.

if each computer was configured on different networks like the following:

1 - 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
2 - 192.168.2.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
3 - 192.168.3.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0

In this case each computer is on a different network 192.168.1, 192.168.2, and 192.168.3, so in this example the only way for those computers to talk to each other is if a router was in place on each network. Without a router you would get network unreachable or something to that effect.

The nic is fine, I can ping the nic. Am unable to ping the outside world, I am not using a router, I am using XPPro. Have run Ad-Aware & deleated what it found, have deleated winsock2 & replaced it with a good copy. Have run CW Shredded, nothing found. I have had this problem on several computers & ended up formating the HD & installing a new copy of XPPro to resolve the problem. I have connected my laptop and am able to get out fine, this is a software problem & not equipment. Any help will be greatly appricated

My nephew just moved in with us and is going to take online high school classes, but his computer is messed up. Need it working ASAP.
In "normal windows xp mode" it will ping websites such as yahoo.com as well as ping IP addresses but it wont browse the internet. It does browse just fine in safe mode with networking.

The problem started when we were trying to fix his magicjack. We uninstalled SP3 and magicjack works perfectly now (just cant browse with any web browser). I can get into his shared file through the network. The computer is wired to the Netgear router. He is running Norton 360 (which we have tried uninstalling an reinstalling with no luck). I have checked and rechecked his network settings, TCPIP settings and internet settings. I have tried the winsock fix as well with no differences.

Please help.
Thanks for reading.

I suspect you have additional malware that is blocking both browsers. If you have IE7 or 8 installed go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab and click on Reset. If you can now get on line download and run Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware.

This started out as a Win 7 issue, but in frustration I installed Win 8 in hopes that a fresh install might fix the issue.  No luck there.  It is a Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge.  It came with Win 7 installed and Win 8 Disks.  I have several machines on my home network.  This is the only one affected and it had been working fine for a year or two.  I am not aware of any new software having been installed in the last several weeks (aside from Windows Updates).

I can ping from command line but I cannot browse.  I've checked my IE settings against another machine that is working.  There is no proxy.  I installed Chrome (from a thumb drive) and I get the same result.  In each case, the page will try to load for several minutes and eventually come back with a page unresponsive error.  I can open HTML files on my hard drive but cannot even browse to my router.  I cannot browse by IP.  I have released and renewed my IP address and flushed DNS.  IPv4 and IPv6 are both configured to used DCHP.  There are no entries in my hosts.ini file.  I have run McAfee Stinger and Norton Removal Tool.  I've rebooted countless times and even, as I've said, installed a new operating system.

I'm stumped.  Is there anything else I can do short of junking this thing and getting a new computer?

Turned off the windows firewall

Ran Malwarebytes (removed a bunch of gunk)
Ping via CMD google.com (works fine)

So this is a problem I have never seen before and has baffled me. I'm running Windows 7 64, and for awhile I had been getting avast alerts saying they blocked a file trying to access the internet and it would re-direct my browser. So I followed where avast said the file was and deleted it. Shortly after though. My internet stopped connecting to any and all servers. I can't play online games, I can't connect to chat rooms, I can't connect to Steam for those of you who know what that is. But I can browse the internet just fine.

I've tried disabling my firewall, reinstalling firefox, I even went to a 24/7 Tech Support place and they took over my computer only to come back to me saying they can fix the problem but it'll cost me $139. HA! Anything I was watching him remotely work on my computer and he opened CMD and tried pinging servers, sending 4 packets and having 4 packets fail. I'm not going to pretend to understand what he was doing. All I know was he was trying to communicate with servers and failed.

Any help on this would be wonderful! I know my way around computers just enough to get myself in trouble, and I'm not afraid to find and edit files. So please any and all suggestions are welcome! I just want a free fix that I ca do myself.

Okay, so you get a good ping when you ping 69.167.142.128 with 32 bytes of data. However you are unable to browse the internet. If you are using Internet explorer, try using mozilla firefox. but first, I want you to unplug your modem and router for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Plug them back in, and while it is loading restart your computer. Once your DSL light comes back on, try connecting to the internet. You should be able to browse.

192.168.0.6 - Windows XP machine with the problem
192.168.0.2 - Other Windows XP machine
192.168.0.3 - Windows 98 machine

.2 and .3 can ping each other and see each other's shares. .6 can ping and see everybody, including itself.

.6 shows up under the other computers' Network Neighborhood/Places but when we double-click on it, it gives an error. Other computers pinging .6 just timeout. "net view" shows nameof.6, but "net view \\nameof.6" returns error.

Tried running winsockxpfix.exe, tried removing nic from Device Manager and reinstalling, tried removing all clients/services and reinstalling (except TCP/IP, since it won't let me).

.6 has other issues too. Under properties for the LAN, Advanced Tab, it shows only an error "can't display. the Windows Management Infrastructure might be corrupted." And, "net view" from a command prompt returns, "System error 64 has occurred. The specified network name is no longer available."

Suggestions? Diagnostics? Things to try?

Answer:Can Ping But Cant Browse

Questions

* Did you tried to navigate with different navigators Ej: Mozilla, Chrome, Opera, Avant.
* If you know the IP from Facebook, Yahoo, or Google did you tried to put the IP in the navigator instead their name? I mean try to go to this ip's in your navigator (are from google)

http://200.42.97.111
http://209.85.195.104

* What navigator was using Internet Explorer? What version? What Windows?
* Do you have installed any antivirus?
* Are you in a home network?
* Do you have installed some firewall?
*Did you sucefully installed flash 10?

Possible Solutions

1. If you're using Internet Explorer 7 or above, check to disable all components and try to browse some pages as google, facebook, gmail.

2.Try another Navigator as Mozilla Firefox.

Good luck, tell us results.

I've got a 'friends' laptop here. I can ping anywhere (router, other PCs on LAN, www.google.com, my DNS server), but cannot ping the laptop itself. I cannot browse the internet or connect to the internet in any other way.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Can ping, Can't browse

Cant say I have the answer but think about this. It is obviously getting an IP(you can ping). It has internet connectivity(you can ping Google). It sounds like you have a DNS issue or a browser issue. Try typing 216.239.57.99 in a browser. If google comes up then you definately have a DNS issue and your computer is not resolving names. Check your TCPIP properties or do an IPCONFIG /all and see if you have a DNS server listed. If you do I might start looking at your browser.

Hi there,

Recently relocated to a new house, had to change ISP's in the midst of all the phone line shenanigans (won't go into it).

Got a new connection and it didn't work. I am able to ping, search for things with google and even send emails but I can't browse. My ISP got me to put in proxy settings which allows me to browse, but I don't want to go through their proxy.

The ISP claims that it's a hardware/software issue on my end, but after following all of their tech support direction we still haven't been able to fix it.

Answer:Can ping, but can't browse

What kind of internet connection are you using?

Cable/DSL/Dial up?

I am going to use that winsock delete and repair in a minute.

Hi all,

I'm trying to fix a weird web browsing problem with our Acer Aspire One netbook running XP SP3. I can't get IE or Safari to load web pages but I am connected to our D-Link wireless router and can ping our ISP. Today Windows even downloaded, installed the latest updates and asked to reboot. So I know there is an internet connection and it's working just fine.

I have:

installed and run AVG and then uninstalled it
disabled windows firewall
uninstalled everything that wasn't necessary
checked the browsers aren't working offline
checked for proxy settings in both safari and IE
completely reset IE to all of its default settings
done a clean boot according to the directions on the MS site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796>
The log from ipconfig/all and ping google.com are below.
Any help would be awesome! I'm at my wits end.

WINDOWS XP, IE 8.

Hi,

I'm brand new here because as an intermediate user, I have set my self up as a freelance help desk for basic problems with local communtity. which I have 100% success at so far.

However, this one is a little out of my experience.

1. User with Desktop with USB Belkin wireless adaptor to Broadband router
2. Can access router from desktop via IE
3. Cannot ping google from desktop
4. IE 'Gives cannot display web page'
5. Cannot run windows diagnostic 'cos not using windows for connection.
6. Belkin says connection to router good (which we know it is 'cos can see through IE))
7. I take my laptop to user's house, can connect to router and access web with IE, so broadband is ok via my internal adaptor.
8. Other laptop user in house can connect and browse , so problem is limited to the desk top set up
9. malware sweep clean
10. user now advises by SMS he has a diagnostic (software unknown at this stage, belkin? router ?) highlighting Username conflict.

Any ideas where I should go with this guy from here please ?

Thanks

Okay, So late yesterday, at about 7 PM, I was browsing the web, and tried to open facebook, but all I got was the loading thingie in Google Chrome. IT gave me a "Webpage is not available"

So I tried another website, google, and the same thing happened. I could not access any websites. So, I went and rebooted my router, and low and behold, I had my internet back! For about 10 minutes, then I lost the ability to browse again.

So I went into the Cmd prompt, and IPconfig'd I had no DNS suffix, but I still had an IP, Gateway, and all that jazz.

So I tried to ping 18.62.1.6 (Random IP Address that I think goes to MIT's website.)

And I got a response.

So I'm thinking this is some sort of DNS problem. All of the other computers in the house are operating fine. I also can see the network Icon in the taskbar say that I have Local and Internet Access. When I check the status of my Ethernet adapter, its got a fairly high number of packets being sent and recieved, and I'm completely stumped.

Ive tried:
Updating drivers
Ipconfig /dnsflush
ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

Ive tried setting my system to using Googles Public DNS, to no avail.

And so Im stumped.

Vista 32 bit home basic
AMD Athlon X2 2.0ghz
4GB DDR2 pc 5300
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 Gigabit Ethernet controller (Onboard)

Is there anything you think I can do Short of Re installing Vista?

Thanks in Advance,
Sean.

Answer:Can ping, but cannot Browse?

Welcome!

Have you tried updating your network adapter drivers?

Are you trying to set a static IP on your computer?

Can you try another browser, just so we can eliminate that possibility?

Thanks,
~JK

I am having the most frustrating problem I've ever had. We installed a t1 line to my computer at work. I can ping an IP address and I can ping yahoo.com, but I cannot browse with IE or Netscape or AOL. When connected to another computer in the office, the other computer browses fine. Of 8 computers in the office, only 2 browse fine. The other 6 will ping but not browse.

I have checked the internet connection settings a million times. Reinstalled the drivers for the 10/100 LAN cards, replaced winsock32.dll, (running win 98 on some 98se on others-no correlation to the problem).

does anyone have any ideas or things to try? I am currently trying to run through a netgear router, but the same exact problem occurs when connecting the T1 directly to my LAN and the other computers that work do so through the netgear, so I am convinced that it is not the source. Hello all.

I'm cleaning a spyware/virus infested HP for a friend of mine, but I'm running into a problem. The system looks clean, but I can't browse, even on the local network. I can ping both IP addresses and URLs. I've tried removing and reinstalled the drivers, tried newer drivers, tried everything I could think of to repair winsock, tried flushing and registering DNS. I've also tried both Firefox and IE. I've also tried removing and reinstalling IE7, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Answer:Can Ping, Can't browse. Need help.

Sounds like a DNS problem to me. Start by trying to ping the dns addresses. Do they respond? Try a different dns server.

It could be any one of a number of solutions to this problem depending on the causde, but it seems to me like it is some sort of dns issue.

EDIT: Check the firewall make sure that it isnt blocking the DNS port. Even if you can ping the DNS server, if the port is blocked it still wont work....

My daughter's computer cannot browse the internet, either with IE, FireFox, or Safari. I can, however, ping various internet sites.

Her brother's computer had a similar problem, but after running ccleaner, AVG scans, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and then uninstalling ZoneAlarm (which wasn't functioning properly) his seems to be working fine. The same steps on Dottie's computer haven't worked.

I've attached a current HijackThis log. Can anyone help me restore internet browsing for my daughter?

Thanks a ton,

Jim

Answer:Can't browse, but can ping

While off for the holidays I disabled the network interface and ran ccleaner again, anti-malware again, restarted the computer, checked the windows firewall settings, reenabled the network interface, and was able to get IE to browse.

Now I'm updating all the security functions and hoping my daughter has learned not to open every email and load every "free" internet game she sees!

Thanks for all the great information and help on this website!

I have a laptop running Windows Vista Basic in my LAN, and wirelessly connects to my ISP.

I could not connect to internet after using it for a week, eventhough all other PCs in our LAN accesse internet. Did a ping to the gateway router and there was reply but no reply when I ping my ISP server.

Called my ISP and gave my IP address, and now I can ping through ISP server but when trying to browse, I could not. Also the network connection icon shows both local and internet when restarted, after few seconds, only local network icon is showing and internet disappears.

Checked and disable services obviouse to me like windows internet security. Have I missed something?

Answer:Ping reply but can not browse

I am guessing here, but it sounds like perhaps the wireless network you are attempting to use has security (e.g.: WEP; WPA, WPA2) and the laptop has not been told about it correctly.

Alternately, you could have an IP address conflict with another PC on the home network.

Or, maybe you disabled something that was neccessary?

Also, do the following:

1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. (Internet Options) or (Network and Internet Connections - Internet Options)
4. Click the Connections Tab
5. Click the button "LAN Settings" in the bottom right.
6. Make sure nothing is checked.
7. Click OK to close
8. Click OK to close
9. Close Control Panel
10. See if your connection works.

Report back with your results.

Hi there,

I recently had a vundo virus and believe i managed to track down the DLL's it was creating and erase them, along with cleaning the registry. However, whenever i open F/f or IE i cannot browse. I get the message "This page cannot be displayed"

I have run WinsockFix and Super AntiSpyware all to no avail, since removing the virus it cannot find anything left, yet i can still not browse. I can however use MSN Messenger and recieve email and ping IP's or Web Addresses.

Apologies if this is like someone elses post. This is my 1st ever question!

i am using a windows xp sp3 desktop and i am trying to get to my wifes Windows 7 gateway laptop. Both are on the same LAN and workgroup. i however can not ping her static address on her laptop when she is connected via wireless N to our the share router. i go into the router and see that she is connected but from the desktop i can not ping her static address by Ip nor by name does not work. i also tried going thru network places nothing. i am just trying to copy and paste files to her C$ drive. i tried turning off windows firewall on the laptop nothing still does not work.

Answer:cant ping, browse or open

Welcome to SF,

Please disable any Firewall or Security Software for now and see if you can access the C$ Drive.
Failure to ping, number one suspect is a Firewall issue.

If above suggestion didn't help at all please provide an ipconfig /all of the XP and Windows 7 computers for review.
Click on Start => in run or search box type cmd press enter (run as Admin). From the black screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen or Command prompt then choose Select All and Paste the results here.

Hi guys,

I know this problem is likely to have been answered a billion times in previous posts but I have searched and have not come across anything that has solved this issue so I hope someone can help.

I've got a winXP pro machine with SP2. I'm connecting to the internet via dialup (56k modem). I can connect to my ISP but I cannot ping or browse. I have tried a new modem (modems were external and were new/out of the box) but still no resolution. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP, updated drivers for modems, tried the winsock fix etc but still cannot fix it. The times I have ping'd, I've have tried both the FQDN and the IP address but no replies. I have disabled Windows firewall and still no good. Prior to me being able to connect to the net consistently i was getting a whole lot of different connection errors such as error 718, 691 etc but have now managed to connect consistently. I dont have any NICs installed aswell.

Hope someone can shed some light? if not, i'm gonna have to format c: .. thanks so much.

Regards
Steve

Answer:XP dial up... Can cannot but no ping or browse

After you connect to your ISP do an ipconfig /all in your command window do you have an external IP address? If not then your not "technically" connecting to you ISP. Does your ISP have different local numbers? Do you get the same symptoms if you atry a secondary number? maybe its a problem with the specific modem bank.

Hi,

My current situation is the internet in the school I work in shuts off after school (4 pm) And sometimes I stay back late and need web access, however a proxy blocks out all web access except for ping. Ipv6 connectivity says no internet access, however, ipv4 connectivity says internet access and there is also no yellow warning over the internet logo.

What I have tried so far.....

Internet Settings - Lan Settings - Turn proxy off.
Changing Computer Address in Advanced Settings.
All web browsers - Proxy settings turned on and off.
SOCKS V5 proxy (not sure if I used it correctly)

What happens before 4 pm is we get redirected to an address 192.168.1.254:8080 and we enter a password and we get web access however when I type in 192.168.1.254 I get an admin login after 4 pm and when I enter it wrong I get an Apache Error.

I am wondering is there any way to bypass the block and gain internet access I have tried to mention it to somebody but nothing is being done so far.

Any help will do,
Thank you very much

Answer:can't browse net.. ping ip but not address..

Due to the infections of SpyWare these days I would like to make sure this is not the cause. So follow below:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a current HijackThis log as a .txt file attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser,
e-mail, etc; before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I have been scouring the web trying to find a solution to this problem to no avail. I am having trouble with the security camera's at my son's daycare. Last week the site worked fine with no problems whatsoever. Then, on Monday, the website just stopped working and IE says "Cannot display this page". When I run the diagnostic it says the site is online but not responding to connection attempts. I tried this in IE 6, Firefox, and Google Chrome with the same result. I can also ping the website with no problems.

I called the daycare to see if it was on their end and they said all their cameras are online and the director said she can access the cameras from home just fine. I, however, cannot access from either of my jobs (one computer with Windows 7 and one with XP) OR from home.

I turned off the Window's Firewall and uninstalled Norton and all other malware/spyware software. I was even desperate enough to perform a complete system restore on this computer at work and nothing fixed this.

Please help before I throw this computer through the window.

Answer:Can ping website but can't browse

if you cannot access it from two separate computers on the outside (work and home, if I understand correctly) and those two computers are truly separate, then the odds are VERY high that it is on their end. The fact that they can access it within their own domain doesn't necessarily mean that someone outside their domain can access it.

Obviously this is sensitive stuff, so I'm not going to ask you to post the website here, and you can't PM someone until you have 5 or 10 posts. We'll wait for some of the network gurus to show up, see what they say.

Uninstalled Norton and Symantec files in registry and file system. Reinstalled Norton Internet security 2012 Downloaded updates. Shut off computer. Restarted and had no browsing capabilities. But could ping www.anything.com. Tried downloading firefox same result.

Answer:Can ping internet but not browse

I honestly think you have a hijacker virus.. this is the classic signs of one. Go onto download.com and download Spybot - Search and Destroy and install it onto your machine (you can grab it from another computer and put it on a flash drive?)Install it and if there is something on your system causing this, it will find it.

xp home, dell, currently connected through linksys router with dhcp enabled, the computers owners use aol dial up to access net

i can't browse the net with it connected through my router.. all my other systems on router are connecting fine, removed all software that looked fishy, reset tcp/ip protocol, deleted cookies... still nothing..

ping times out when i ping www.yahoo.com but works perfectly if i ping their ip address...

any clues???

Thanks

Answer:cant browse net, ping ip but not address

What are your DNS settings for TCP/IP? Make sure they are not pointing to AOL name servers.

Try doing an NSLOOKUP from a command prompt. Do it for both IP and NAME of yahoo.

nslookup www.yahoo.com

nslookup IP_ADDRESS_of_YAHOO

Take note as to the address of the name server that the system is using to resolve.

Since you are using DHCP, your name servers should be the ip of your router. You can try hard coding your ISP name servers instead.

I recently bought a netgear WGT624 wireless router to allow my desktop and laptop to share an internet connection. After much work, I have this problem: when connected to the router (with a cable) the desktop can ping websites but cannot browse them. In addition, it can receive E-mail but cannot send it (using Outlook Express). It works fine when connected directly to my DSL modem. The laptop has no problem browsing the net, either when connected directly by cable to the router or when using the wireless function. Both computers use Windows XP. My modem is a sprint 645 series DSL modem. I've spent hours on the phone with both Netgear and Sprint. I never was able to communicate directly with the router using my desktop to set it up. I eventually hooked my laptop up to it directly to set it up (following the phone directions of the Netgear technician). They first said that it was a problem with the modem, so I called sprint. Sprint walked me through the modem settings and said that it was fine and had the same settings that they use for their routers. They said to tell Netgear that the modem is bridged and so should be no problem. That is when I called Netgear back and they walked me through setting up the router from the laptop. At that point they said that it was a problem with my browser on the desktop and they could not help me. I've tried using my Windows XP cd to remove and then restore IE, but that doesn't seem to help. Since the laptop seems to work fine,... Read more

Answer:[HELP]cannot browse internet and ping

Hello vodevil and welcome to Seven Forums.

I had a similar situation last year. Look through this previous thread and try resetting your winsock protocol. Per Microsoft, this protocol is used by Windows to communicate with other computers and to access resources on the Internet, such as e-mail and Web sites. You could also try flushing your DNS cache as suggested by Forum member Jacee. Ultimately I had to get a different brand DSL modem to correct the problem because my older modem wasn't 100% Windows 7 compatible.

I have a vista laptop that is wirelessly connected to my lan. All other PC's on the lan (7 of them) can browse no problem. My XP laptop can browse wirelessly no problem.

I have even tried a wired connection just to exclude the wireless from the investigation... same result

The vista laptop can ping by IP address and ping www.google.com (ie by domain name), so ISTM DNS is working

when I try to browse, I get "the connection was refused when attempting to contact www.google.co.uk"

when I try to browse by IP address, I get the same message.

I hate Vista now. XP I thought I understood. Thanks MS.

I can browse to the PC on the LAN but can't see the public folders despite sharing them and I hate vista even more now, as the whole process was VERY painful to get that far!

The only clue I have is that it used to have Norton on it, which I have removed, but it seems to pop up as a cause of issues on forums.

here is the ipconfig:

Answer:Can ping by domain name but cant browse

I hope that this helps. I have just run into the same problem on a clients computer. Its too easy to blame MS (they seem to be a scapegoat for a lot of problems), but if it MS was that bad, why continue to use it? Anyways, from my research, Norton is the culprit. You can attempt to uninstall it, but Norton has, for years, been notorious for leaving dirty uninstalls. For some reason, my client had received, rather unacceptably, a program that caused Norton to block internet access. I installed Avast Home and A2squared to remove any malicious software and also uninstalled Norton not realizing it was blocking browsing access. Being typical Norton, upon uninstall, it did not remove access restrictions. So then I decided to smarten up a little and downloaded and ran the Norton removal tool located here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2007080716174339?Open&docid=2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid Removal of a few malicious programs using Avast and A2squared and then a reboot after the Norton removal tool had completed its task, the clients computer is back up and running. I hope that the same will work for you. Thank you for your time.

Hi all,

I have a very frustrating and annoying issue: I can successfully "ping" website names and IP addresses from the command line, but all of my internet browsers say "page cannot be displayed" or "Server not found." I also cannot update my Kaspersky from the application.

Machine:
Win7 x64
Home Edition

I have tried everything I can think of:

1) Basics: Wifi switch, network cables
2) Repair Adapter
3) Restore (restore fails)
4) Boot in Safe Mode w/ Networking
5) Virus/Malware/Rootkit/Adware Scans
6) Ran HitMan Pro 3
7) ipconfig /release /renew
8) Flush DNS
9) netsh winsock reset
10) No proxies set -> all default obtain automatically.
11) Uninstall all 3rd Party Firewalls/Antivirus, Turn Off Windows Firewall

I think it must be a Windows setting since it still happens in Safe Mode with Networking, but that's just my hunch.

I'm really stuck on this one and would appreciate any help. Happy to post other details if required. I am sure I have tried a few more bits but my head is fizzing

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards
Al

Answer:I Can Ping but Can't Browse on any platform

Open a Elevated Command Prompt:

Click on the Start button and type cmd.
DO NOT press Enter or click Go.
Look at the upper part of the window and you will see cmd.exe.
Right click on it and select Run as Administrator.

Paste the following into the Command Prompt window, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" | find /i "proxy" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. Post results in a reply here.

I've tried many, many solutions today. Via winsocket fixes and safe mode tweaks. I have a customer computer that just will not browse no matter what I do. I even reinstalled IE and firefox, nothing will browse. I set manual DNS, and got the same.

I noticed in the info bar in IE it said it was connectiong to www.www.msn.com.net Last I checked that's wrong lol. However, I can't seen to fix the issue no matter who's advice I take. Customer messed it up because I just formatted the system 2 weeks ago and worked great. Since I don't know what he did, I have to go step by step. I'm out of steps.

Even tried other network cards, just for the hell of it.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, if this was posted before, I haven't quite figured out how to successfully search.

My roomate's computer a recent-ish HP notebook running vista recently encountered this problem, I couldn't browse on it, in a any browser or ping from the Command Prompt, being an OSX user, I'm not that familiar with vista. Through googling I have found people encountering similar problems when attempting to uninstall Anti Virus Software, but I have a suspicion that in this case it might be something more malicious.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have 2 Dell Laptops (new) sent down from corporate and I am frustrated trying to figure this out. These two laptops (and only these two laptops) seem to have an issue getting to certain websites. Anything that contains "msn" and several other sites can be pinged but will not come up in a browser. I have tried IE as well as Mozilla. The same sites can be reached from any one of the of other 200+ computers on my network but not these two. These two can reach most sites but several it cannot. Like I said, I can ping however. I also tried using the IP address in the browser rather than the name but still nothing. I have turned off all firewalls and anti virus and have tried several other ideas I found on google but nothing seems to work. Any ideas what the heck is causing this?

Answer:Ping Web site but can browse

Have you scanned these systems for viruses and spyware? Which tools have you used to scan? Have you checked to see if there is a proxy server configured that might be interfering?

But problem is that I can't browse the web and can't even ping my wireless router IP address!!! Here's my situation: when I turned on my computer today, the Internet stopped working in Windows Vista 64-bit. I am able to ping web servers in cmd, but my internet browsers can't access any web sites. The Internet works fine in Windows XP on the same machine. Diagnose and repair doesn't help at all in Vista. The network connection seems fine. I can view computers in the workgroup and I can still access servers with telnet. However, when I go to help->troubleshooting->connect to the internet->click to open the connect to the internet wizard, it says I am already connected to the internet. I then am shown options to "browse the internet now" and "set up a new connection anyway". When I select "browse the internet now", Internet Explorer opens and shows "detecting proxy settings" in the status bar for a few seconds, and then web browsing surprisingly works again, but only in that IE window. If I open another IE window, the internet won't work in the new window, but it will still work in the previous one. This doesn't help any of my internet-using programs. Whenever I close various internet browsers normally (just pressing close), it displays an error message with the options of "check online for a solution" and "close the program". So, does anyone know why the Internet isn't working in Vista and how I can fix it? Thanks for reading.

Basic description of the problem:

The internet of my friend's laptop is borked. I can't access/browse any websites in Firefox or Internet Explorer... I can, however, ping sites by domain AND IP address with no problem.

In safemode, I can browse fine in Internet Explorer and Firefox... it's just in normal mode that they wont work.

Here's the kicker... I *can* browse via the "My Computer" or Windows Update browser... it connects fine.

What has been done so far that hasn't fixed it:

-Winsock fix
-Checked to make sure all internet options/LAN stuff was correct
-Scanned with Spybot, no malware
-Scanned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, no malware
-Ran Dial-up-fix
-Flushed DNS
-Reset Internet settings in IE
-Disabled Windows Firewall

Hello.

In an attempt to solve, rather than rebuild this computer I have joined your wonderful website.

Firstly I must explain that I have followed similar threads on your site and acted on their advice before joining you and reading your pinned New Member threads.   Hence I have tried to use some of the tools already mentioned including ComboFix (which wouldn't run).  Please excuse my leaping into hot oil before looking.

With that in mind can I explain what is going on with this laptop and what has been done so far.

It is a Dell Inspiron N5110 running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1.  4.00Gb RAM.  It had been protected using Microsoft Security Essentials which has been uninstalled at some point whilst investigating this problem.

I was initially asked to investigate why the machine had stopped browsing the internet, saying that it was 'Unable to connect'.  Opening a command prompt I could see that it was connected to the wireless network and had IP addresses etc.  It could also successfully ping www.google.com, ibm.com, bbc.co.uk etc.

I connected to the router using a LAN cable just in case it was a wireless driver issue.  Still unable to browse but can ping.

Ran iexplore -extoff  from a command prompt to turn off the extensions.  Still unable to browse.

Downloaded the Firefox 37.0.1 installer using another computer, copied it using a USB key and installed it. ... Read more

Hi all,
I am in the IT industry and am having problems with 3 different clients, I hope someone can shed some light on the problems. They both seem similar but slightly different maybe it has been something Microsoft have released in a update that have stuffed things up.

Client 1.

They have a small workgroup network setup with DNS allocated from the router. They have 4 pc connected to the network.

PC1. Windows XP Pro
PC2. Windows XP Pro
PC3. Windows Vista Business (Laptop)
PC4. Windows 7 Home Premium (Also laptop the one with the problem)

This network has been working fine for the last 3 years. PC1,2 and 3 can all see each other fine and share files no problem. PC4 is a problem if I try browse the network and even click on this pc?s name in the network it comes up with a error message saying I do not have permission to access it. I also doesn?t pick up all the pc?s on the network. Now this is where it gets weird. If I browse from one of the other pc?s on the network I can see all the files I have shared on the PC4 and access them and do what they need to do. I can even ping all the other pc?s on the network from pc4 without a problem.

All the advanced sharing setting are right or Home/Work and public everything seems 100% right. I have also changed all the pc?s to a static IP addresses which I didn?t think would work but I tried it anyways.

I have also tried uninstalled File and printer sharing from the Network connection properties and restarting and reinstalling it. a... Read more

Hi and Welcome to SF,

Verify that Netbios is enabled on all computers.
For XP machines: Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
For Vista and 7 machines: http://ecross.mvps.org/howto/netbt.htm

Also, try accessing the shared files by using an IP Address. Click on Start and type \\IPAddress\SharedFolder

What type of Security Software do you have installed in PC4?

You might want to check out this Thread, it's similar to yours, it might help you guide to some troubleshooting process.

Hello.

After guidance from Broni  (Thanks).  Here is my first post.

In an attempt to solve, rather than rebuild this computer I have joined your wonderful website.

Firstly I must explain that I have followed similar threads on your site and acted on their advice before joining and reading your pinned New Member threads.

Downloaded the Firefox 37.0.1 install... Read more

Hi folks.

I recently installed W7 & Office 2010, (all legal obviously) and in our network we have a local site to solve "tickets" from users.

The problem is this:

In any machine with XP and Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Chrome... i can open the website (ticket system).

But in this one i just can't, it is recently installed and added to domain, but even a PC in the network without domain can open the website.

I took a look to the source code of the page, is weird because doesn't download correctly the content.

I can ping, i have network full acess but the problem still.

I also tried with mozilla and chrome, see the source code and there's nothing "blank", no errors too.

I mean, im reaching the website, but the content is blank, why? i disabled all components and firewalls too, but i can navigate other local network sites and internet too.

Any idea?

My friends office is having a strange problem. When they attempt to open a second IE 7 session, the browser will sit at the loading page. The other IE session will be fully functional, but this one won't work. I can ping out, and browse with the other session. I thought it was only on one computer, but the problem is the entire office. They are connected wireless to their AP. I swapped the AP and they are still experiencing the problem.

Opening a new tab works fine too. I know the short term solution is just to open new tabs and not new windows, but I'd like to fix this for them. The new window will show in the task bar, "Opening 74.x.x.x", the IP for google.com. Ideas?

I've been having some browser trouble that I can't figure out. After a while of being online, I suddenly am unable to browse websites.

Firefox 3.5 seems to get stuck in offline mode, and eventually just tells me it is unable to connect to the website. IE 7 gives a similar response.

The thing is that I can still use Windows Live Messenger, any downloads I am running are still working, and I don't get disconnected from any games online.

I've tried pinging various websites when it does lock up and I receive normal responses. I've tried updating my network drivers with no luck, and ran a few virus scans but haven't found anything. The only thing that fixes the problem is to reboot the computer.
I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2.

I'm working on my sister-in-laws vista laptop.

I think i cleared the viruses and bugs off of it, but i cannot browse the internet or update the avast! program or virus definitions.

I know next to nothing about vista.

I looked at ipconfig, and its listing 28 network connections, most of them stating "disconnected". could this be the reason im having issues? I cant find any place to delete these connections.

I can ping out to google, but cant browse. every time i try it says "the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

Thanks

I found a thread on a forum that said open cmd and ping google.com and 8.8.8.8. So I pinged both of them and got 4 successful replies for both. But I still cant browse. Ive check that all proxy settings are set to automatic, and still nothing.

Ran into an interesting problem and I'll try and explain it as thoroughly as possible.

I'm able to browse websites as normal without any notable issue however we ran into an issue when we went to remotely connect to a business application using the external IP address. Tried pinging the IP to no avail, then tried ping google also to no avail. The IP resolves to the correct hostname and I can nslookup but no go on the ping. Tracert also resolves the correct hosts but fails on all hops. Upon changing the internal configured IP I can ping any address for about a minute and then it starts timing out again no matter what I change the IP to.

Have already tried the following:
- Checking the host file (all default)
- Reinstalling the NIC
- Winsock reset, dns flush, route flush
- Running netalyzr, came up with the following which I don't believe to be an issue
Code:
The resolver at 192.168.15.1 (win-na.telstra.net) could not process the following tested types:Large (~3000B) TXT records fetched with EDNS0
Requests from this resolver come from 203.14.6.86. This resolver requries 192 ms to fetch a result from our server and 21 ms to return a result from its cache. It does not validate DNSSEC.

- Disabling firewalls on both computer and router.
- Checking for any rules blocking ICMP requests
- Restarting computer
- Restarting router

It's on a relatively simple network, one modem serving a small amount of computers. This is the only computer encountering the issue so I think I... Read more

Hello,

This is regarding my son's computer, running Windows 7.
None of his browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE) can access web pages - by name or by IP address.
I can ping by address or hostname from cmd.
None of his other programs that use the internet (Skype, games, etc) can access the internet.

It sounds to me like a firewall issue but I've tried turning off the Windows firewall - no change. (yeah, I turned it back on when I was done) :-)
I've browsed similar threads and found the Universal Proxy issue - no proxies are set when I check the Internet Options tab.

There are 3 other computers on the same router, all of them have full internet connectivity.

Computer does the same thing in Safe Mode.

This is extremely puzzling. Help appreciated!

Answer:Can ping but can't browse or game - Windows 7

Is this computer on a router? Do other computers on this router have this problem? If yes,
Make sure your router set to be dns server. In your pc setting for network make sure your not using a fixed ip or dns. The auto ip and auto dns buttons should be selected. Under networks make sure ipv 4.0 and ipv 6.0 are installed.
Good luck.

Hi, I know this problem is all over the internet web forums but it just seems that there are a lot of possible causes to this issue. I've been researching already for 2 days and i still haven't found a cure. i can ping successfully to any website but i cannot load any on either FF or IE.

Everything was fine until I went outside of the country and some tech guy changed its settings (probably the TCP/IP settings, but I don't blame the guy because this could be a hardware issue) for it to be able to connect to their wireless network there. A few days after I got back home, my laptop says it can connect to the router, but it cannot load any website anymore. I tried connecting through LAN cable and then through wireless network but same thing, it says it is connected to the router and can ping, but still cannot load the site on the web browser.

My laptop is Acer Aspire 1690, WinXP Home Edition SP2. Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet for LAN and Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection for WLAN cards.

- No Norton Antivirus program is installed.
- Firewalls are turned off.
- I've already ran the Symantec removal tool and it did not find anything suspicious.
- I've already scanned the pc using the latest updated virus database from AVG.
- I manually set the TCP/IP and then tried DHCP.
- Services (Computer Browser, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Wireless Zero Configuration) are running well.

It's still not working after all the tries and retries and... Read more

In the middle of casually reading blogs, both Chrome and IE refused to let me browse pages. It was a completely normal session. Since then, I've tried multiple networks and both wired and wireless connections, and I still can't browse the internet (except for in Safe Mode with Networking.)

I take care of our small SBS2011 based system (approx 30 users). I have a (1) user (Windows 7 Pro system) who can no longer browse the internet with Firefox or IE. If I log in as another user, I can browse - no problem.

Logged in under the problem user, I can ping web sites and get 4 good returns. I did scan with Sophos, Malwarebytes, SFC and Vipre Rescue (safe mode). Malwarebytes did find and quarantine a few things.

What ever he stepped in, it did load a couple of BS programs which I went into control panel (programs) and uninstalled as well.

What should I look for or try next?

I was going to try Rkill, Combofix and adwCleaner.

Thanks

I have this few-minutes-after-Windows-started-then-browsing-http-fails problem, on Win98 First Edition. Hope that long name summarises the problem: browsing works initially for a few minutes after Windows started, then fails. Afterwards, browsing to https still works, POP email works, Ping works on both name and numeric IP address forms. No proxy, not running server app - as far as I am aware.

So it's a destination port 80 problem, and not a DNS problem.

This problem occurred on two separate occasions, under different setups. Should provide some contrast to eliminate possible culprits:

First setup (Oct 2005) -

1.1. Cable broadband, with cable modem and separate Belkin wireless router. Win98 desktop PC on wired Ethernet connection.
1.2. Zonealarm (free version) autostarted. No problem browsing.
1.3. Restarted Win98 with other firewalls such as Kerio and Tiny replacing ZA. Got browsing problem.
1.4. Went back to using ZA.

Second setup (recent) -
2.1. ADSL (UK) broadband, D-Link DSL wireless modem-router. Win98 desktop PC on wired Ethernet connection.
2.2. (same as 1.2, with latest ZA free version for Win98)
2.3. (same as 1.3, but with Kerio only)
2.4. Exited Kerio (so then no software firewall running), didn't help.
2.5. Tried IPCONFG Release/Renew, didn't work.

With no software firewall being auto-/manually run, browsing problem is as described. So it's not the software firewall (ZA or Kerio). Nor is it Cable/DSL, nor(?) the router. And nothing to do... Read more

What is, or who is, your internet security program ... Norton McCrapie are very good at blocking access to the Tinternet.

Are you getting any Network Errors such as 2, 102, 104, and 105 ?

Malware is a frequently culprit for blocking access. Error 124?

The subject laid it out pretty well...

Setup 1
HSI Modem + Linksys router (Tomato firmware) + 2 computers
Router ip range 192.168.1.*

Setup2
Linksys router (Tomato firmware), set up in wireless client mode + 2 computers
Router ip range 192.168.0.*

The Wireless client mode works perfect. Everything jives. Every computer can ping the others on both subnets. But I can only 'browse' to the computers on the same subnet, not outside. My Windows 7 Homegroup is messed up. My VNC sessions between computers won't connect via PC name, but will connect via IP address.

What am I missing?? I'm sure it's something simple.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:1 home network, 2 subnets, able to ping between, but not browse... what gives?

Hi all,

Righty first off im running vista 64big sp1 decent spec PC.

Vista tells me im connected fine to the internet, wont diagnose any problems, will let spybot/nod32 update themselves but will not let MSN, skype, firefox, IE etc browse the internet which seems very odd.

When i boot into windows i see a lot of error messages from apple mobile device, skype, etc, crashing straight away but think that is because of they are being told there is an internet connection yet cannot use it and so crash so im not sure that is related.

I have tried virus scans and spyware scans, ive tried booting into ubuntu live CD and can browse fine.

I can ping www.bbc.co.uk fine and have an IP address and the correct DNS.

I have tried checking the network is private not public and that seems fine.

I have not got a restore point (doh!) so they only thing i can think of is a complete resintall from scratch!

any help would be great, thanks people

Answer:vista 64bit networking cant browse can ping

I'm having exactly the same problem. I had a similar problem with Vista 64 bit once before and the only thing that solved the problem is a reinstallation.

Have System Restore turned off so can't try that either :P

I don't want to reinstall because I've got a ton of applications and games installed. Plus updating service packs and updates is a pain.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for this strange problem.

a windows xp computer with service pack 2 can ping any web site, browse the LAN and transfer large files just fine. but internet explorer nor firefox can web browse. Also, Antivir, the antivirus program cannot update, and neither can Ad-aware.

I've tried so many things I can't even remember all of them. I've tried reseting winsock in netsh, flushing the DNS cache. uninstalling the network adapter and installing it again, different drivers, but still no go. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:strange problem: can ping, but not web browse or update

Sounds like you've tested all the basics. I take it other PCs on your LAN can access the internet fine? There aren't any MAC filters or restrictions set on your router that might block you are there? Do you have any firewall software installed that might be blocking you?

You might try downloading Ethereal via another PC and taking a look at the traffic dump to see what state the connection stalls.

Hi everyone first post here, be gentle!

I'm posting here because I am at my wit's end. I consider myself a little tech savvy but am no means a professional. Here's the story:

My girlfriend has been using her laptop to wirelessly connect to my router for about 3.5 years. Upon returning from a vacation about 5 days ago the laptop would connect to the router it would show a strong signal but pages would not load. Sometimes they would load halfway and then time out.

I am able to ping my router, and external sites with no issues by name and ip address.

What still works:
The laptop can connect to other routers with no problem.
Other wireless devices can connect to my router with no problem.
The laptop can use a wired connection with my router with no problem.

What does not work:
The laptop and my router wirelessly.

Things I've tried:
Power cycling all components multiple times.
Complete malware/virus scans
Now disabled all firewalls, Antivirus, and wireless security
Updated to latest Wireless NIC drivers and Router firmware
System restore to previous known working timepoint with no effect
Resetting router to factory settings.

Googling revealed possible issues:

Hello, i am in need of some help. Ive been trying to fix this all day long and im getting frustrated.

I recently had a new internet connection setup this morning. It was working fine up until 4-5 hours ago, now i cannot browse websites. I can ping yahoo.ca and other domain names and get responses. Im writing this on my iphone connected over wifi, so the problem is strictly with my pc. Pc is connected by wire and it is running win 7.

I cannot access my routers firmware by my pc(but i can on my iphone). Ive tried reinstalling network card drivers, disabling ipv6, inputting googles public dns servers on my adapter settings as well as several command prompt lines that i found by googling. (flushdns and netsh reset ...). Ive tried google chrome and ie. For what its worth, i was able to download and install a windows update.

I would reay appreciate any help.
