I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Then I tool the FA... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 on my new computer, which came with a trial version of Office 2010. Rather than buy the full version when the trial expired, I installed the Office 2003 I had on my old -- now dead -- computer. I now find that I can't open the Word and Excel files I created with the 2010 version. Is there a 'cloud' site where I could send the 2010 files and have them returned to me as standard .xls and .doc files? Or is there a free converter available for download?

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, running Office XP, and I use Microsoft Office Professional 2002. (I bought this computer in 2002)

I have been having a problem for several weeks, ever since I had a number of viruses and other bad things going on with my computer which have since been resolved.

I can't open documents that I had previously created with Microsoft Office. (Word and Excel) When I try to do so, I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says "requesting virus scan" and a timer comes up, but then nothing happens.

I have tried a number of things, including uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office Professional, going to the Help Menu (Detect and Repair) when I open Excel or Word, and nothing works. I was having trouble even opening Word...it would only open in Safe mode every other time I tried to open it, until I read another helpful hint in this forum today about renaming normal.dot. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with this problem as I am pulling my hair out.

I had someone come to help me clean out my computer when I was having all my problems several weeks ago, and he was not able to figure this one out, either.

Hello,

When I try to open a 2007 Word or Excel document I recieve as an attachment in Outlook 2003, I get the following message:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". Office 2007 compatibility pack was installed and it still did not work.

I then uninstalled Office 2003, uninstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack and then I ran CCleaner to clean up the registry. I updated my OS (currently has Windows XP SP3) with all updates, reinstalled Office 2003, installed Office 2003 SP 3 and then reinstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

I still get the same message when I try to open an Office 2007 attachment in Outlook 2003.

OS is Windows XP SP3 fully updated
Office 2003 SP 3 fully updated

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any hel on this issue.

All of a sudden, I cannot open ANY Microsoft Office documents that I have saved on my computer. Even if I create a new document, save it, and close it, I am not able to open it a minute later. A dialog box comes up that says, "Publisher (or Word, etc) cannot find the file you specified. The next dialog box will let you browse to locate the file on your hard drive or floppy disk." I tried repairing and re-installing Office, but that didn't work. I have had these files saved on my desktop for months and haven't had any problems opening them until now. Also, I was reading about error codes with this subject. I'm not sure if it helps, but the dialog box has the error code 1100174. Thanks in advance for any help with this!

Hi, I'm running Windows XP and have Office 2000 installed. I use Internet Explorer 7. If I open IE 7 to browse the web and then try to open an Office document the Office program doesn't do anything, then eventually tells me it's "not responding." I have to reboot to get the documents to open. After reboot, as long as I don't open the internet, all Office documents open fine. Once I open the internet, I have to reboot before opening any Office documents. I've tried "repairing" Office 2000. No help. Any sugestions? Thanks!

Sorry I just don't use IE because of all the problems I had with it and this was at least 5 years ago. I keep it around because anything that is Microsoft word, excel, etc... programs doesn't allow Firefox to download from their website.

Hi,

Every time I try to open any of my Word or Excel files, my coomputer tries to install MS Office 2003 & it asks me for the product Key Number. I don't have MS Office 2003 & so I don't have a key number. I have MS Office 2000. So I can't open any of my documents.. This has been happening ever since I downloaded MS's Windows Desktop Search. So I guess the problem is connected to that. How do I get my computer to simply use the software that I have, MS Office 2000, instead of trying to install something new that I don't have? I'm using Windows XP Home. Thanks.

Did you try uninstalling the Desktop search and see if it still does it.

Not sure if it is a Windows Installer problem or not. You may need to run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.

Thumbnails for Open Office Documents. Now the Thumbnail is OK.After the file is converted back to the ODT format the thumbnail view still shows the embedded image. But if I have to change the image, Open Office no longer gives the thumbnail with the image. After it ran out, I could never get my old Microsoft word installed again even though I have the discs. So I resorted to using Open Office. I need to save my documents in either .doc or .rtf for my classes. No matter how many different ways I try to save my documents, my tabs and numbering will always come out messed up. I am getting so frustrated. I have Microsoft Works on here, and tried using that instead, but the same thing keeps happening. I must be doing something wrong. Why doesn't my work save the way I set it up and the format keeps changing. I don't think I can save my work in the open office file format. What is going on?

This will check out the install and do a repair if needed. You will need to the "Office cache" file on the hard drive or have the Office CD handy, if it is needed.

This really should be posted in the Software forum, as it doesn't really have anything to do with programming.

Having said that, I believe Open Office can open Microsoft files directly. No conversion required. Just open them and save them in the open document format.

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing.

So I logged onto my laptop to work on my university assignment some more, and poof, it won't open.
I keep getting the same error every time.

I can open the file in WordPad but I just get fifteen pages of ">:?:%<":?&:"
I can open it in OpenOffice but the formatting all changes, headers/footers disappear, images disappear, text boxes containing quotes aren't there.

I copied the Open Office version into a new blank Word page; and filled in the blanks (which took me an hour) but when I saved and opened the file; I got the same error.

Hoping it was me doing something wrong with the way I saved it or the default program to open it, I repeated the process taking up another hour; but I'd done it right, and got the same error code.

The default program to open it is Office 2003, the same format I made/saved the replacement file in.
It makes no sense to me. Also, why now? What changed? It was working fine yesterday.
Not done any downloads or scans so I don't know what the changed factor is.

Please can anyone help me, these assignments are dawning upon me and I need to get my finishing touches done before I can submit them, I also don't want to risk submitting a faulty file.

Thank you so much!

I got my computer with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 installed on it. Once the trial ran out, I bought the product, but in doing so installed a separate application, leaving two Microsoft Office installations, one with an unregistered product key and one registered (yes, I know I was stupid). I uninstalled the old version, leaving no default program to open documents with. I tried to track down the EXEs for each program, no dice. When I looked at the start menu shortcuts, I found that each Microsoft Office program lead to one application, called CVH.exe. Setting that as the default program didn't work. How can I make it so that I can double-click on a pptx or docx file and run the corresponding application?

Answer:Default program to open microsoft office documents

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. First, you did nothing stupid. The program should have resolved that issue for you. You may want to complain nto MS about this. Did you receive a DVD or was it a download? If the new Office you got is on DVD, install it again after removing both of the other installs. When you um-install Office it does not destroy user documents.Look in the list of entries in the  'Program Files' directory and see if there is two installations of MS Office. If you ind the right one, send it to the desktop as a shortcut. (Right Click) That will put a good shortcut on the desktop. Also, go into the place where you  can remove programs. See if two versions of MS Office are installed. Remove the bad one.

I have a new computer running Windows 7 Home Premium and Office Pro 2010. Whenever I click on a hyperlink in an open Word or Excel document (or any Office document, I think) that links to a password-protected website, the log-in dialogue from Internet Explorer opens up, even though my default browser (FireFox) is already open, and I am already logged in to the password-protected site. This only happens with links to password-protected pages - others open normally in FireFox.

I have been through my default program settings and file association settings, and manually changed everything I recognize as internet-related to open in FireFox, but it's still happening. The site I can't open is a private WordPress site, so the log-in page is a php file. I tried creating a .php file association, but that didn't solve the problem. The password protection is via an htaccess file, but I don't know enough about that to speculate whether that's relevant (everything starting with http is supposed to be opening in FireFox, according to my settings).

I am in and out of that website all the time, so this is really irritating. I don't want two browsers open, and I don't want to use Internet Explorer, but I can't uninstall it, as I do need to use it to check websites I'm building from time to time. I'd be very grateful for any solutions anyone has to offer.

Thank you!

I have Windows 7 and a fairly new computer.  I am unable to open Amazon.com (looked in your forum answers, but the answers given would not help me as they related to other versions of Windows).  Also, I am having trouble opening some of my documents in Office Starter.I recently uninstalled Norton Security and installed the Security Suite from Time Warner; called CA Security.  Think this may be the problem.I am not a beginner computer user, but certainly not an expert either. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Answer:Cannot open Amazon.com. Also trouble opening documents in Office Starter

If CA Security has security settings in the firewall component check them as Amazon is a secure site for paid transactions...

Whenever I try to open any of my Microsoft Office documents (excel or word), the Windows Installer box pops up and I get the "preparing to install" and "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" messages. The document semms like it's opening but it only shows a blank page with a gray background. I'm running Windows XP and as was mentioned, Windows Office Professional Edition 2003.

Hello Everyone! Sorry. Instead of a question, I just have this solution that I want to share. I noticed nobody here asking for it. But, just in case, here it is.

QUESTION: When we open multiple Microsoft Office documents from Windows Explorer, they don't seem to open alphabetically. How do we do it?

ANSWER (Old MS Office Versions):

In your Explorer window, supposing you have five (5) files named A, B, C, D, E. The sequence goes like this:
1. Single-Click file B. This acts as the anchor point for most of the selection.
2. Shift-Click the last file. In this case, E. By this time, B to E is now selected. Only A is unselected.
3. To include A, Control-Click file A to complete the selection.
4. Press the Enter button.

ANSWER (Newer MS Office Versions; per app; Excel example):

1. Create a shortcut from the MS Excel application. Put it somewhere easily accessible such as the Desktop.
2. In Explorer, ready your files because you'll be dragging them to the MS Excel shortcut.
3. Select the files you want to open simultaneously and alphabetically. It doesn't matter how you select them.
4. This is the curious part. When you drag and drop the selected files to the MS Excel shortcut, it matters which file among the group your cursor is pointing at. That file will be the first to be opened. The rest will be opened alphabetically after the one you're pointing at.
5. Example: You have files A, B, C, D, E. We select them all and drag-drop them to the MS Excel shortcut.... Read more

I made a topic quite a long time ago, with little response from this community.. I've decided to download desktop recording software and take a video clip of the error..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy397wnN4HM

I've tried downloading recommended updates from Windows, I've tried repairing the installation, I've tried reinstalling Office 2007, I've tried repairing the program internally, I've tried many other solutions, with no progression.

Any help towards a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am at work on one of the computers on their network. This machine is used my three or four people so how the problem started is just a guess. Word, Excel, Powerpoint all open with "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional." If I try to open any file I created in the past, the same thing happens. I thought I would run scanreg but apparently that command does not work. Lost, and my boss is too cheap to call in a tech, so I am stuck with no word processing. I am typing this on line however with the machine in question. Any ideas? Thanks. (The signature below is my machine at home)

I have had this problem on and off for quite some time now. The applications will open p Excel, Word, etc., but when I try to open a saved document, I cannot access it. The error message is that it is 'not available'.

Then I close the error message window, go to close the Word application and I get another error message: "The file normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" If you select cancel, it takes you to save normal.dot, same with no. If you select yes, it closes the application.

I do NOT have SP2, I am unable to install it. Could this be what is wreaking havoc with my MS Office apps?

FYI - When I go to install OxpSp2.exe (the file I got today from windows update), I get error message reading:
Office Hotfix Installer encountered a problem. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
then the same stuff and send error report.

XP Pro SP1
MS Office xp Standard
Word 2002

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Nancy

Answer:Solved: MS Office Documents 'not available'

Sounds like a file association problem with the office apps. With all of them acting up I would just reinstall Office and see if that takes care of the problem.

Why can't you install SP2?

If you want to take care of your normal.dot problems try the following.

Replacing normal.dot. The pathway on an XP machine with Office 2003 will look something like the following.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_ID\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot

Make sure Word is closed when doing this. When you find normal.dot delete it and a new copy will be created when you reopen word. If you have any special Macro's set up on the default template for word don't do this unless you know how to recreate them.

Hi,

I have a 2003 SBS machine and have various clients connected through exchange to get mail. Users typically leave outlook running the whole day while they work on programs such as access/excel.

I have noticed that on some machines excel and word docs open very quickly over the network until outlook is left open and connected to exchanged. we are opening the files on a variety of win 2003 servers, however when they have their outlook exchange account connected I have seen the docs take anywhere from 3-5x the normal amount of time to open.

I have also noticed that opening email attachments such as xls and doc are also very slow while connected to exchange, but it seems to vary from file to file, some seem better than others.

does the connection to exchange complicate the process of opening docs on remote machines or does it sound like I have a misconfiguration somewhere? I would like to get the performance of opening a file (say a xls) on a network share to be the same as it is when outlook is not connected to exchange.

I do not have these PCs running in offline or cached mode as we have a shared calendar that does not display correctly when I enabled these features. Clients are running office 2003,2007,2010. Turning on cached mode does not seem to make much if any of a difference btw.

Thanks for any insight you may have

I have used Open Office for years with no problems. It's easy to save as a Word document. I bought a new new computer wrote several items, saved in OO. This computer doesn't have Word installed so I installed Office Start (not knowing the difference). Now every OO document on my desktop is taken over by Word - literally with a big W. I can't open it unless I agree to a long list of rules, including personalized ads, which I don't want.

I'm not very computer savvy and don't know if I should uninstall Office Starter.

Please advise.

Hi all,

Today I had to do a re-install of my PC, and re-installed Office 2007 Pro. However, under 'word (or any of the other application) options' > Advanced, the number of recent documents entry is greyed out. I had originally got it working with MS tech support, but now, of course, they want to charge me $49.00 for doing it (and of course I did not write down the procedure at the time!!).

Any assistance in getting this entry back would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Is there a way to just open a Documents window and click a button or icon to have a clean page to work on without going into another file and opening there and then closing out of that file? In our old Word program we came right into the Document file lists and could click FILE and Open and have a clean sheet.

Answer:Solved: Open new file in Documents

Word isn't included with Vista, so I'm confused by your question. Doesn't just opening Word display a blank document? Or are you trying to create a new Word document in the Documents folder by right-clicking and selecting New -> Word Document, and that isn't working?

Operating system is XP. All of a sudden, when I attempt to open any document in Works Processor, I get the symbol of a square with 6 colored dots and the upper right hand corner of the symbol is turned down like a dog eared paper. Whatever that symbol is, it doesn't allow me to open the document. The only recent changes I've made was compressing my emails yesterday and the day before that I did the latest Windows Update. I thought I was smart by always copying everything to an external hard drive, but I get the same problem when I attempt to open any documents on it, too. This has been my old reliable computer and as such, has most everything I ever did on it. Am I screwed or is there a fix? Thank you.

I'm having a problem opening a text file in Documents that I wrote using Open Office.

It's extension is .wps. I get a message it opens with swriter.exe.

When I try to open the text file, I get a long list of titles, such as: Open Office.org 1.0 Text Document, PSD - Adobe Photshop, etc., but I don't get the text file I wrote.

I recently did Disk Cleanup and Error Checking, so I might have removed a program I needed to click open and read my Open Office text files.

Advice would be appreciated.

Hello there, i have a real problem...

I installed Vista on a little drive i had as a spare. Then i applied my big harddrive (where XP was on) and saw that i could no longer open programs (Messenger, skype etc.) I then deleted the Windows XP on my big drive, because i wanted to go for Vista. I then start deleting all the programs i have no use for anymore (because they could not open in Vista, after being installed on XP) and prepare to install them again on the same drive (Don't want Vista killing my Harddrive while i am gaming - hence the two drives.) Everything is deleted, exept the documents and settings folder. I have all my school stuff, pictures of girlfriend, savegames and other stuff in there, so there is no way i can just delete that.

I try to open the folder, security warning "What?"... Well i press a few keys and i get in. I open a subfolder, security warning... I realise that something is totally out of place. When i then try to open a picture it says i don't have permission to see the picture. WHAT!?! I freak a little but calm myself again.

I have tried everything and looked everywhere, but i don't think anyone has done something quite as stupid on the internet, so i have had no chance to help myself that way. So now i am looking for some people who are willing to help me here.

Please help me, i have no idea what to do and i need those folders open... I know it sounds weird, but what i could really use is some sort of permission remover or ... Read more

Alright since it seems that so many people have questions about how to do this i will give you a nice complete guide on how to take ownership of a file in Vista. First you have to select the file you want to take ownship of.
From there right click and select properties. (see pic 1)
From here select the security tab. (see pic 2)
Click the Advanced button. (see pic 3)
Now click the Owner Tab. (see pic 4)
From hereyou click Edit (see pic 5)

Now you select the User Account you want to give the permission to. Then click Apply. A message will pop up telling you that if you have just taken ownership you have to close and reopen the objects properties before you can view or change properties again. Click okay and get back to the Computer screen. You should now have full authority to do what you wish with that file. I hope this helps.

Please answer fast!
Yesterday at night I upgraded to Vista (it's not the first time I do this), then I found that I can't open my documents folder.

I only see a shortcut at my user folder called "My Documents" (I think Music, Pictures, and Videos are inside there) with a generic folder icon, if I open this, I get that I don't have access to that folder, then when I try to get it, it says "Access denied- go to the Security tab". No, the Documents folder is not there. Only "My Documents" shortcut.

Well I open the Security tab, and I try to get ownership, but it says:
"You don't have permission to see the security properties for this object, you must try to get ownership, etc."
Below, it says:
Current owner:
Mhk (MHK-MACBOOKNANO\Mhk) <-Me!
and then It says below:
New owner:
Admininstrators (MHK-MACBOOKNANO\Administrators)
Mhk (MHK-MACBOOKNANO\Mhk) <-AGAIN ME!

Well then I try to make me the owner again, but I can't, as it continues asking me the same, like:
1. I select Mhk from the New owner list, then I 'OK'.
2. I click 'Edit' again at the Security tab
3. I get the same window as before, telling me that I do't have the permission.

How can I solve this????

The problem is not on my PC, but my fiance's laptop.

First of all I have read many threads here that have similar problems. I can't get any of them to work. Many of them require d/ling this or that. So I d/l whatever it is I need and put it on a flash drive, but on my fiance's laptop I can't open the flash drive, I get an error. Can't remember exactly what it says atm.

I read that it could be a registry error caused by a virus. So I ran pc pitstop and Webroot anti virus and spy sweeper. PC pitstop didn't do anything but Webroot did find malware, got rid of it but the problem is still there. Ran Webroot again in safe mode but didn't find anything this time around.

Has this messed up her laptop so bad that I can't do anything but reformat? If that even helps it at all. And if it does come to that, can you save files from getting deleted like school work and pictures?

Thanks.

Today I had to reinstall my Windows XP by formatting first and then installing a fresh copy. Before doing so I copied all of my files to another drive on my hard disk (I have two partitions on the same hard disc). When I had finished with everything (installing drivers and office 2000) I went to that folder where I kept my documents, but was shocked to see that I can't open any of my documents (word, excel, etc.) or image files.

Please help!?

Answer:[SOLVED] Please help, I can't open my documents or image files after XP reinstall.

What error message do you get ? If it's something like "access denied" then maybe it's just an ownership problem.

If this is XP Home then restart the computer in safe mode and log in with an account that has admin rights. Then follow this link to take ownership of those files and folders : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

Answer:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

I installed Open Office and I cannot figure out how to get an icon to show on the desktop. In the installation I never saw a box to check to add one. I went to the help feature and didn't find anything there. Any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Open Office

do you want a shortcut icon for each seperate open office program? writer, calc, etc?
if so, go to start >> all programs >> open office >> then when the list with all the seperate programs comes up, simple right click on the program e.g. writer and click send to >> shortcut

Dear Friends,

A good friend of mine uses Apache Open Office 4 for typing text documents and letters and I am trying to help her adjust the margins but am having problems. The margins by default are set to 2 c.m. and I have been trying to reset these to 1 c.m.

I went to Format / Page / Page Tab. On a blank page I then adjusted the four margins to 1 c.m. and then clicked on O.K. This then carried out the necessary adjustment, however after typing the text and wishing to close the programme down a box appeared saying"Document had been modified". I tried all three alternatives (Save - Discard - Cancel).

The problem I encountered was that when opening the programme next time the Margins had gone back to 2.c.m. and I could not find any method of making the default stay at 1.c.m. This is quite frustrating as you have to manually make the adjustment each time you wish to type a document.

I wonder please whether any kind person could offer a solution.

Thanl you for reading this.

I do not use the program, but this seems like the answer.
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Calc_Guide/Setting_a_default_template

The link contains an important note:
Although many important settings can be changed in the Options dialog Setting up and Customizing Calc, for example default fonts and page size, more advanced settings (such as page margins) can only be changed by replacing the default template with a new one.

Anyone use this and have comments. I thought this would be a cheap (free) text writing software for my 92 year old Dad but it may not be all that it is cracked up to be. I think it is advertised as being a greate "generic" for Word, Excel, power point, etc. but I find the Writer part of the software a little odd. It has an odd way of introducing it's own format after a "carriage return" when you don't want it (specifically outline form format) and it can oddly wrap information off the page altogether.

When all is said and done maybe I should buy him a copy of Word 2003 ( wouldn't need all of Office either, just Word).

Is this the right place to ask for a solution to an OO problem? The OO forum has no idea how to solve it and Tech Guy has never let me down.

I am suddenly missing a tool bar in Writer, which is like MS Word - only free. At the top of this message screen for posting a new thread in this forum is the tool bar that is missing. No font selection, no size selection, no bold, italics, nothing. It's gone.

It is not one of those shown in the view/tool bars option. I've checked everyone and none of them are the one I need. I can't customize it either. I am frustrated because I need these options in my work.

I'm hoping that there is someone here that is familiar with OO and who can help.

Thank you!

Answer:Solved: Open Office problem

The Tool bar you are referring to should be the "Formatting" Tool bar. I was just playing around with my OO, and was able to close it, then re-add it with the "View/Toobar" option, by clicking it. You say that that option doesn't work for you? After you check Formating, check the sides of the screen. The tool bar might appear, but not where it was originally. You might have to click and drag it elsewhere.

Otherwise you can always try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

You might get more responses to this question in the Business and application forum, also what version of OO are you using?

I needed to make some changes to a PDF file and I got some instructions off the net on how to do it with Open Office.Org. I downloaded Open Office, clicked on "Open a file", selected the PDF file and it took about 20 seconds (about 9 pages of PDF) to open the file. From there, I made the changes and everything worked as advertised. This was with a Vista machine.

Now, I want to do the same thing with an XP machine but here's the problem. After I click on "Open a file" and select the PDF file, it opens immediately but shows the PDF to have over 1800 pages. It's mostly blank but a couple lines of gibberish on each page. It seems to open the wrong PDF file.

I then tried it on another XP machine with the same results.

Can't find anything on the net that addresses this problem.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong that makes Open Office open a non-existent PDF file instead of the right one.

I needed to install the "Sun" pdf import extension

Oddly enough, I downloaded all three copies from Filehippo.com. On the Vista machine, the extension was included in the installation. The extension was not included during the installation on the XP machines. Go figger!

Whats the difference(besides the org and com) between openoffice.com and openoffice.org? Is there a difference? Obviously I'm not blessed with the tools to see it. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Open Office Question

Openoffice.com isn't a real website, they are domain squatting and OpenOffice.Org is the official website for OpenOffice.

I downloaded Open Office 4.0.0, now I have 2 icons on my desktop and I'm not sure how to proceed. There's a round blue one with the birds in it just to run the downloaded program. When I did the second icon appeared that looks like a manilla folder. When I click on it, I get the menu shown in the attached screen shot. What do I do now?

Whenever I click on an Office or Open Office attachment in Windows 10 mail I get two options, Open or Download. No matter which option I choose it takes me to my document folder to save. I am unable to view the file. I can go to the same attachment in outlook.com or windows live mail and open it no problem which is a nuisance because I like the convenience of using the new mail app. I have removed the app and reinstalled it but still have the same problem.

I use Open Office on my Vista laptop. I am working on a large document for which I need "inverted commas" type of quotation marks Instead of the " " type. I have found inverted commas in the Special Character table. The codes are U+201C and
U+201D. Is there any way that I can create a macro or something like that so that I could print these directly from the keyboard?
it would save me a great deal of trouble at this time. Allan.

Okay, I have a little question about Open Office Calc.
In my school we have to do our math exam on Calc and print the formulas afterwards as well as the finished exam paper.

The problem is that no one seems to know how to print the formulas! I went in and clicked on "view" and "formulas" under settings in tools and the formulas don't show in print even though it shows in Calc!

Could somebody help me?

As an Open Office enthusiast of many years, I offered to download and install Open Office on to a friend's Windows 7 laptop.
However all attempts to download produced a "Oops, there is a problem, try again" message. Assuming that it was the Norton Antivirus that was blocking the way, I searched Norton for a Disable facility, but I just could not find it. I am not familiar with Norton. Can anybody help? Allan.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to create a macro that takes each letter from a string in one cell, and puts each one into its own cell. For example, if I pasted this paragraph into cell A1 then click my macro, this happens (edit: doesn't matter what case the letters come out in; caps or as they were written):

EDIT: A macro to do the opposite would be useful too, i.e. take all the information from the seperate cells and put it into one string. Thanks.

EDIT2: The formula CONCATENATE(a1;b1;c1) etc seems to work for the opposite, except for the fact that i'm working with strings 1000 characters long, and CONCATENATE(a1:z100) or whatever doesn't work, it just returns the letter in A1. Any ideas?

When I started my computer this morning Windows ran a disk check on my back up flash drive (K:\). When I tried to open Outlook in MS Office 2007 I got the following error message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file K:\Personal\Email Addresses Backup.pst is not a personal folders file."

This has happened before so I tried what I've done before. (1) I've tried to repair MS Office using the program cd but that hasn't helped. (2) I tried starting MS Office while holding the Ctrl key so that I could get to the Repair command in Help but that didn't work either. (3) I ran scanpst.exe on the Backup.pst file and it repaired it. That allowed me to open Outlook and over 1,500 emails began to download (from my ISP's server I guess).

I suspect that Outlook is using the backup file as its primary source for my Contacts (individuals and distribution lists) and wonder if anyone can help me get those items into the Outlook program itself. Last time time this happened I received a message saying that the K:\Personal\Email Addresses Backup.pst file wasn't available but the program ran anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gawain
