However I just found out recently it didn't work as it should, the application to take manual pics just couldnt load up the web cam, it showed black screen. While in the other hand if I am using it for video conference, it works perfectly.

Any idea how to fix this problem up? I've updated my webcam driver but still no help at all, thank you guys

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new Toshiba Sattellite C660-1WT
Product code PSC1LE-01Y01ERU
With Core i3-2310M processor
With preinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 operation system
BIOS ver 1.00 13/18/2001 (based on Toshiba HWSetup)

Cooling fan runs on high speed, with very loud noise.
I have tried to change "Toshiba Power Saver Settings V8.9.4.64" to "Battery optimized" in "Advanced power settings" but this didn't helps.
This option work only in one way - to increase fan speed, but never to decrease.
When I turn this option to "Maximum performance" and then back to "Battery optimized" fan is going to low speed, but only for first hight CPU load operation then fan begin runs on high speed and never switch to low.

Can you help me to reduce fan noise when cpu is idle automatically?

Answer:Re: Satellite C660 - Fan speed controller didn't work properly.

I have tested and defined fan speed settings on several Toshiba notebooks (belong to my friends) and it always work. With other words the fan speed was always reduced.

I recommend you to use ?Balanced power option? for usual work. Enter additional options for balanced power plan and set ?Cling method? to battery optimized. After doing this fan speed should be reduced and work with notebook much pleasant than before.

Hi!I bought two days ago, Lenovo B580 (model 20144) with Free DOS, then installed Windows 7 64bit SP1 and the whole set of drivers from the Lenovo Support Web site. In Device Manager - All devices are installed and worth all the extra software (Lenovo's Power Manager, etc.). In the folder with the Realtek sound driver is a folder with Dolby advanced audio. After I installed the  Dolby advanced audio - I have an icon in the system tray "Dolby V2", which allows you to change the settings but not having any effect it to sound. When playing media files in any media player in Dolby advanced audio does not work  graphic equalizer display(with sound level indication) switch "on" and "off" Dolby advanced audio does not affect the sound as much a change of the preset modes too. Any idea how to make it work Dolby advanced audio properly?

Answer:B580 model: 20144 - Dolby Advanced Audio didn't work properly

hi psycoz,
Welcome to the Forums.
Is this the driver that you installed?
Realtek Audio Features Driver Softwareh1ar12ww.exe119MB
Installing the above driver should install Realtek Audio Driver + Dolby Advanced Audio v2 (the reason for the bundle is that the dolby controller must match with the Realtek audio controller so that the equalizer and the sound profiles will sync).
If it doesn't work, try to:
1. Uninstall the Realtek Audio Driver / Dolby Advanced Audio v2 from the Control Panel
2. Open Device Manager and uninstall the driver (check the "delete the driver software for this device")
3. Reboot the PC and re-install the drive above
Check also this thread for additional troubleshooting:

Hope this helps

PC brought to me to repair. Presented with spyware/browser HiJack Problems. System specs showed Windows XP (not SP2)

Fixed aforementioned problems, set new restore point. Once browser began working correctly, tried to do latest critical downloads from Microsoft, & discovered that Service Pack 2 shows up in the Add/Remove programs, but never properly installed. < When I try and update anything now, it says that Service pack needs to be uninstalled first because the system is unstable>.

So, I look in the archives on the microsoft update site and it appears that customer tried a couple of times to download/install SP2 but it just shows it as "failed"

Here is my concern: When I go to uninstall SP2 from Add/Remove area, I get a warning message that the following files may not work after I remove SP2. Well, that's pretty much most of the files on this PC.

I can't go back to an earlier restore point. Unfortunately, I wiped those out after I removed all the virus's/spyware on the PC. Plus, it doesn't even appear that it ever actually does show up in Add/Remove programs.

Any recommendations other than reformating hard drive and starting over? This PC is loaded with work related items that customer doesn't want removed So, I'm looking for other solutions.

Thank you!

I seem to be getting this message and the prompt to boot into safe mode everytime I startup or reboot. Everything seems to be shutting down normally. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that it seems to be loading an old system restore point whenever it does this. I don't know for sure if these 2 issues are connected. I first started getting the "Windows didn't shutdown properly" prompt after I had to do a reset of my computer during a total lock. I can't say for sure if the system restore point issue began when I first saw this as I don't shutdown my computer very often. Thanks for your help!

I'm assuming this is Windows 7 Home 64bit?.

Hello - I recently tried updating windows 10 and it got stuck at 22% ...I then manually turned off my PC and everything returned to normal. After turning on my PC the time after that everything was discoloured and the graphics were messed up. It even said my connection wasn't secure when trying to log into certain things.

I'm going to try the update again but what should I do if it fails again? Do I have to reinstall windows 10???

Ok, so I had Microsoft Security Essentials on my computer for a while, then one time when I turned on the PC, it came up with a message that it couldn't scan. This happened a few time so I tried to uninstall it from the control panel. It got so far through the uninstall then popped up with a message saying that it couldn't uninstall properly, and to restart my computer, which I did.
I then went to control panel again, the program was still listed so I click uninstall again and it popped up with a message saying that it couldnt be foud, and did I want to delete it from the list.
And so now in my Event Log, there is lots of error messages saying that Security Essentials couldn't update, it couldnt scan etc.
I go to program files and there are still a lot of files in the Security Essentials folder.
How can I remove this program completly?
Oh and I tried reinstalling - it came up with an error message saying it couldnt and to restart my computer.
Any help on this? Please?

I would like to know why after I put Microsoft word 2007 on my laptop that, after turning it off and on again, it wouldn't load,
So i went to f8 and it came up with start up launcher repair so that is what I did, then when it attempt repair was finish.
It said that it couldn't repair it automatically. So it turned off.
When I turned it back on it started up ok.
Does anyone know why this happens.

Answer:Satellite L300 didn't boot up properly after MS Word installation

Who knows why this happened?
Seems something was wrong with the installed Windows OS.
Something like that can happen always?
I think it was a bad luck that this happened after MS word installation? I think this could happen also after installation of any other software...

However, the unit seems to boot up properly? so it was just an temporal issue?

So the engineer who attended last week did not put the laptop back properly. The screws are in but he did not put the caps back on the screws. What do I  do? Do I phone Lenovo warranty and tell them this happen and ask them for a replacement caps? I am on about the following caps that are circled in red: I noticed this when I went to put my USB stick in to the back! This is another frustrating problem amongst the following:  A resolution owner should be calling me some time today, I will discuss this with him/her and will call Lenovo Warranty later on.

Answer:Problem with engineer who attended, he didn't put back the laptop properly!

You need to sit with them and watch. Then check it before they leave. Apparently they're hit and run not spending a minute more than they absolutely have to. This is largely due to the flat rate fee they get for a speific type of call or part swap.So I ask you where are the caps then if they're not put on and they were there before?

This seems to be an issue that has occured on more than one occassion.

When my laptop restarts it comes up with the error c:\windows\system32\wmnetmgr.dll and that it is not installed correctly or something like that. Therefore, my profile doesn't load up properly and loads up a temporary profile with everything lost on my hard drive.

This is such an annoying thing and I've already done all of my system restores which say that they have completed successfully, however it is always loading up with this temporary profile, which loses all data when it shuts down.

I'm a bit of a noob with these issues and any information to help me out with this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Apps not starting properly, sys. recov. doesn't work, can't shut down properly, etc..

no replies yet?

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.
Defragged my C drive, still no results besides the computer feeling a bit smoother-running o_o

The program errored on these sites. I had been trying to de-install a program and then reinstall it; but I decided to take the option during the de-install to keep some of the history, options and so forth. Don't think I ever tried that and I won't again. When I tried to reinstall the program it found some of this leftover stuff and decided that it was the wrong version! Surprise
So I attempted to go through the registry and find all the places where the old but perhaps newer program was noted. That was when it told me I couldn't do anything with that keys or its subkeys. I tried the manual method of gaining permission but that didn't work either. Was hoping for a miracle in your program but no such luck. Thoughts?

I got all the way through the guides until the part where I downloaded all the programs and then I ran SAS (in safe mode). After the 4 hour process was over my internet would not work after a restart into normal windows. I tried running the fix in SAS twice, but to no avail. This is what I have tried:
-setting ip and dns to auto obtain
-repairing internet connection
-ipconfig /dnsflush
-changing the dns servers to others that are used on my network

this computer is a server for my network at work and I am unable to run the database server. When viewing the server log it says: Eror TCP Open timeout for LocalHost.

should I un-quarantine the items so that I can have access to the internet and the server again? We have been taking orders by hand all day long today - not fun!

Answer:SAS No internet, fix didn't work

I suspect you may have a zero access infection. There are alot of steps I want you to carry out now so just take your time and go careful.

Download and run Win32kDiag per the below instructions:

Download this Win32kDiag and save to C:\Win32kDiag.exe. You must save it here!!!!
Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

Now we need to scan the system with this special tool.

Please download and save it to your root folder (C:\
Unzip it and put junction.exe in the root folder (C:\junction.exe)
Now click Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:
cmd /c junction -s c:\ >C:\log.txt

A command prompt window opens and also a license agreement from SysInternals will appear.
Accept the license agreement and the scan will begin.
Wait until a log file opens. Attach this C:\log.txt when it finishes (the command prompt window will close when it finishes). (How to attach items to your post)
NOTE: It scans your whole hard disk so if can take a long time. Be patient and don't do anything else while it is scanning.

And one more scanning tool I want to use to collect more information is OTL per the below.

Please download OTL by Old Timer to your desktop.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

If Combofix didn't work, you would not have a log. However it is not what you should be running first.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Ok i bought a router for our roadrunner service a while back, and it constantly logs us off about once an hour. I've been dealing with that problem for a while now. I remember at my apt at school we had cable internet also, but i had a cross over cable hooked up from the cable modem to the first port of the HUb. I just bought a hub today and a cross over cable with hopes of doing that over here, and not having to worry about getting booted off with the router every hour. Will this work? And if not, why did it work at school and not here, please help.

Answer:Router didn't work, got hub..please help

It depends on your specific contract with your ISP. If you have multiple IP addresses from the cable provider, you can use a hub and connect one computer to each IP address. For instance, if you had three IP addresses, you could connect up to three computers and share the Internet, but the 4th computer would be left out. However, if you only have a single IP address allocated, this won't work.

You might try solving the problem with the router, they're normally very easy to get going...

Question: Unhide didn't work

Hi, this is my first post although I have used the website to help remove Windows Recovery virus. It appears that this virus has become rampant very quickly and is a real pain in the butt!I have followed various instructions posted on this website by many knowledgeable people ( I am you average "Joe" when it comes to pcs) and have managed to get rid of the virus. Malwarebytes didn't seem to cure it, telling me that, after removing 3 threats, my system was clean. It wasn't however, so I ran Superantispyware. This did the trick and cleaned the lot out. TDSS didn't find anything either.Of course, I then still had the annoying post-virus rubbish to sort out, such as missing files, shortcuts gone, start-up entries showuing as "empty", etc etc.I have tried running "unhide.exe" a few times, with AVG installed, no joy. I then uninstalled AVG, ran unhide again, still no joy. Unhide completed and told me that my files were now all visible, but they are not. Some things did come back, such as Sopcast and Spywareblaster but most remain hidden. I can access one or two through "Start"-"All programmes" etc but most are still showing as empty or have vanished all together, such as microsoft paint, word etc etc.I have still got photos etc.I did run Combofix b ut it didn't seem to make much difference. Please help, I would be really grateful,ThankyouMod Edit: Posted CF log data sent by PM to me, then moved topic back to MRL ... ok... this may not make sense, but.......

My work uses the Novell Netware Logon thingy whenever you get on the computer. Before I actually worked here and was just a volunteer, I used the name and password of an ex-employee, Anne. I never had any problems at all. I used my AOL and YAHOO and things were just fine.
When I got employeed here, they changed my name and password for me, and the settings on my computer changed. Now that I am logging on using my own name and password, my computer has gone haywire. Pop-ups show up on my computer all the time, whether I'm using Internet Explorer or not. CONSTANT pop-ups. It's gets so bad that I can't even do typing work in Microsoft Word because they pop up so often...
I also get a message whenever I log on that says:
" wintask.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program error log.”
I’ve ran Spybot and Adaware and even thought it finds problems, THIS problem has yet to be fixed by running these things.

The computer guy here is NO help, which means I’m going to have to do this myself…. Can anyone help?!

Answer:Solved: it didn't work

My Windows 7 computer was infected with the Windows Recovery virus which I removed. Some icons on my desktop and everything in my "All Programs" were still missing and I tried using unhide.exe to fix it. But, it didn't work; if you ask me the program did nothing. I even tried restarting after running the program but the problem is still there.

I would like some immediate help please. I'm beginning to think the files are hidden for good. I don't want that to be the case.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to TSG,
If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start – Run – type in msconfig – click OK and click on the Startup tab. Click on Enable All then Apply and OK. Then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have a similar problem to that found at:

My Windows XP computer was infected with what I believe was the Windows Recovery virus, which I nelieve I removed using Malwarebytes. However, some icons on my desktop and everything in my "All Programs" was still either "Empty" or missing and I tried using unhide.exe to fix it. But, it didn't work.

If anyone could please help, I would be forever grateful.

I've lost my pictures from a vacation to Sweden!

I thought I burned them to a DVD-R, but the disc shows empty when I load it in the drive. I can see on the disc a portion of the disc has been burned though.

When I burned it, it did say it would take 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete the copy, and when I came back, the files were on the Windows Explorer window associated with the DVD.

Using Windows Explorer, I selected pictures and videos on my iPhone that was connected (didn't import because my hard drive was full, and therefore couldn't restore it from the trash when I deleted them from my phone), right clicked to copy, and pasted to a DVD-R.

Like I said, it said "1 hr 40 mins to copy". When I came back, the files showed that they were on the DVD-R, and here's where I screwed up: I went to my iPhone and deleted the files before ejecting the DVD, where it usually says "preparing the disc to be used on other computers".

I then opened a pic from the DVD, and tried to rotate it. Can't remember exactly what happened, but Windows Explorer then showed nothing on the disc.

I ejected the disc, and it came out, but didn't say "preparing the disc to be used on other computers".

Now when I put the DVD in a drive, it shows as an empty disc. I can see about 1/3 of the disc has something burned on it, which is the right amount of data that should have been burned, so the data is there.

Help! It's my kids first visit to Europe!

Answer:DVD Burn Didn't work

Hi PepperMill and Welcome to TSF,

What application did you use?

Depending on what application you used to burn the disc, it stores the files on different locations. Some makes an ISO(Image) file of it, and some stores the raw data in the temporary files folder.

Go to Start > Search.
Type "%temp%" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.

Navigate around and see if you can find any files associated to it.

Furthermore, are you sure you weren't using an -RW drive and just didn't close it properly? Go into the application you burned from and see if you can close the drive, or add another file or so to the drive, just burn another .txt file to it.

First off, this is an awesome site with a plethora of valuable information that has been so helpful to me in the past. This is the first time i've had to post though, since i've tried EVERYTHING to get rid of the irritating Malware pop up threats like cyberlog-x, networm-i. Trojanspy w32, [email protected] and [email protected] I'm starting to get scared because my computer is slowly getting more messed up (freezing etc.) I have followed the Smitfraudfix instructions and restarted in safe mode and all that jazz. I've used Spyware Doctor, Ad-aware, Trend micro, and Spybot Search and destroy. They find stuff and fix it, but the pop up bubbles keep happening I don't know what to do. The smitfraud fix seemed to help everyone else. Plese Help! I have attached my hijackthis.log and an Ad-awarel log.

My computer froze up and was giving me all kinds of problems so I decided to wipe it and start again (something I've done several times without issue).  When I got the OS booted back up, I went to install drivers.  This particular laptop doesn't have a disc drive, so I have an external one plugged in.  The problem is there's no drivers for the USB ports, SD slot, ethernet, or wi-fi.  As far as I can tell, I literally have no way whatsoever to load anything onto the computer.  Any ideas on what I'm missing?  Thanks!

Answer:Tried re-installing the OS... didn't work

You loaded the OS from an external device and are able to boot the computer, correct? If you can make a wire connection to a modem or router you should be able to configure the basic OS to see the Internet and then get all of its updates downloaded and installed. It's going to take several rounds of downloading, installing, rebooting and downloading again. Many of the updates are sequential and must be installed in order, to work correctly.
Once you have the OS up to date and the security software activated and current we can go looking for the drivers you need online.
Keep us posted

I had the hijacked start page on my computer, along with the fake pop-up telling me I had to purchase their software to get rid of spyware etc. I received info on how to remove same. I was told to download SmitFraudFix, Spybot-S&D, Ewido and HijackThis. I downloaded all and was told how to proceed. I went through the steps, but was not informed to do so in SAFE mode! After I completed doing what I was told in each of the above, I restarted the computer. I no longer have the startup page, but it says "about:blank" and I can't change it on Internet Options. As well, I have high speed cable internet but it now runs slower than dial up. I have an HP Pavillion computer with AMD 3800+ processor running on Windows XP Media Edition. Can anyone help me get back online at high speed???

have you connected the card with all necessary cables to the mobo or the devices? make sure your sound is not disabled from bios or from windows. check to see if the sound is not muted. if its on board, it could mean that you have to reposition some jumpers. i had to on my gigabyte to get the 6.1 to work without sounding like 2.1

I have the malware virus MS Removal tool on my PC. I followed all the directions here:

operating in Safe Mode and everything seemed to work great. I was able to run Rkill then Malwarebytes and both programs were able to remove malware. I followed the directions all the way to the end, but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to reboot in Safe Mode or regular mode after MBAM told me it needed to reboot.

I chose regular mode and saw that I still had the MS Removal Tool virus.

I went back and did everything again in Safe Mode. This time Rkill and MBAM didn't find any infected files. I still completed everything from start to finish and when I rebooted my computer I still had the virus.

I've tried running every single renamed version of Rkill in the regular (not Safe Mode) version of Windows and none of them will work.

Please help! I'm operating Windows XP Professional.

I've been having decreases performance on my laptop over the last month or so. In addition to performace issues, I have had pop-up to different websites showing up more and more often. I have scanned with malwarebytes' anti malware, and removed everything it recommended, I have full scanned with norton 360, and fixed everything it told me, same with stopzilla.
I tried the dds,and apparantly only got halfway through before it hung up. I believe i had followed the directions explicitly. The gmer did work, and I've attached the log.
The OS is windows XP.

Any other info I can provide?

or what steps should I take at this point?

thx for your help,

Answer:dds didn't work but gmer results are here

Greetings Tempestus and Welcome to the Forums,Your gmer log does indicate some problems. Are you certain to have disabled Symantec's script blocking feature? If not, that would explain why it didn't work for you. To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:1. Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.2. Click Options. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).5. Click OK...then try running DDS again.Post back your results. Thanks!

I made 5 recovery DVDs with AI Recovery on my Asus U43F Notebook.  I followed the direction precisely, but after the last DVD popped out and a window popped up saying that the recovery was successful, my computer restarted itself  >  "loading windows files" progress bar  >  "starting windows" symbol for Windows 7 64bit  >  then a grey screen with a mouse arrow and NOTHING!  no prompt, no windows, no taskbar, no right-click or anything to click, What do I do now?

Answer:[Help] Recovery DVDs didn't work

Your DVDs could be corrupted since your laptop was corrupted and when you made the DVDs are corrupted. You need to get an exact Asus  notebook with the exact version of Win7 of not infected system. If the beginning is crooked the end is crooked, GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out).
Option 2 leave factory defaults out and clean reinstall WIN7.

I've had a WD 500G WD5000D032 MyBook Premium for many years and after upgrading to 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate, I've had the "WD&External_HDD_Button_&_Lights" error in Device Manager since day one and have never been able to correct the problem.

My system drive is all but kaput so I backed up all of my important files and ordered a Crucial 128 GB m4 SATA 6Gb/s SSD with a 2.5" to 3.5" drive converter as a replacement. Why am I telling you this, honestly, I have no eff'in idea! Anyway, I'd rather futz around now just in case something I do causes a problem ; then the failing drive will be affected and not the SSD and I can install the 500G WD5000 MyBook Premium in an error-free fashion to the new system drive.

Does anybody have a solution because I don't want to replace a drive that works perfectly fine, except that it runs 24/7 and turns on all by itself after I turn it off. I also don't know if having the yellow warning triangle with an exclamation point in Device Manager will affect the performance of my PC, especially since Win7 doesn't recognize my Nikon digital camera either...

Thanks in advance!!!!

Please Help! I was working on a school paper and I attached it and sent it to my email so that I could work on it while I was at work. When I got home and opened my email attachment, I saved it and continued to finish my paper. When I attached it to submit to my teacher, it only sent the original draft. I am going crazy trying to find my paper!!! Is there a way to retrieve my word doc?

Answer:PLEASE Help!!!Word Doc didn't save new work

You've discovered a little bug in Word. When you open a Word attachment and "Save" it without specifically selecting a target path, the file is saved in a temporary folder. You can try a full drive search for the file name. Be sure to include hidden files and folders. You could also try any number of data recovery applications to try to restore it, but it may have been overwritten too many times to recover.

The virus put a VBS extention on every exe file on one of my drives. Every single program was suddenly 5KB and could not be executed. In the virus forum, I was given a link to a registry patch (

...if you can not do a restore, then go Dougknox and download the ninth item to fix exe file associationsClick to expand...

that fixed the file sizes. But the programs still could not run (brief cmd window which immediately closed when I'd try to run them).

I started from scratch and rebuilt the whole xp environment and had to delete every single exe file on the second drive and redownload a bunch of stuff.

Obviously, for future reference, I'd love to know why the programs, after restoring their attributes, were still unusable.

P.S. No idea what the virus was other than it added a .vbs extention to all the files. I forgot that malwarebytes was turned off :banghead

Last night, my computer was infected with the [email protected] I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista. I have up to date McAfee & AdAware. Neither program finds any problem with the computer but Internet Explorer will not open. The window opens and it says it's loading but nothing ever appears in the window no matter how long I wait.

I also have Safari on my computer and am using it to access this forum. Per instructions I read here, I downloaded SmitFraudFix.exe. I ran it in safemode. It did not take very long and did not prompt me to restart during the process as expected. It also did not fix the problem as Explorer still will not open. Other programs seem to work properly but I'm afraid to open too many other things in case that infects them too. I do have an email program that is not web-based. It seems to be working fine in spite of the fact that it's the program where the original corrupted email was.

Here is the report log from SmitFraud:

We changed to DST this last weekend and I just now noticed my pc clock didn't make the change.
I went into the time settings and the automatic daylight savings button was greyed out and set to off.
Tried everyway I could to change it had to finally go into the registry and change the value data from 1 to 0.

It is still greyed out but is on and on a reboot did change my clock to the correct time. Upon searching the net
I found this was a common problem. Is there a better fix than the one I did for this.

Chalk this up to being someone who never uses excel. I have excel 2007. I was trying to save the file when it mentioned something about a fidelity issue. I clicked "open in a new page", thinking it was going to open another copy of the spreadsheet. Well once it was open, it was just an excel file of the same fidelity issue warning. I clicked close and it asked if I wanted to save it and I said "no" not realizing it was talking about my work also.

I tried to look this up, I can't possible have been the first idiot to do this. I haven't done anything to the computer. I haven't opened excel again. I haven't made any changes to anything except doing a quick search on the internet and a search on here. It's been an awful week and this is just the icing on the cake.

Please help.

Answer:i didn't save my work, can i recover it?

I'm afraid your week just became "more awful" since there is no way to retrieve your work because there is nothing to retrieve. It may be a pain sometimes, but turning on "auto save" on a worksheet prevents the loss of lots of data.

I was trying to open a program and it didn't work so I tried "right click" then "open with.." then I chose a program to open it with. The next thing I know, all icons on the desktop have changed to that program I've set for only one file and none is opening porperly anymore. So please I wish to know how to make all icons work with the same program they initially were working with because now none is working.

Answer:I was trying to open a program and it didn't work so I tried

IS there some reason you didn't tell us what type of file it is? Do you have the file extensions turned on so you know the type of file you're working with? You apparently didn't pay attention when doing the "open with" & changed the default. There's a check box for "always use the selected program" that you should have unchecked. Now all files with that particular file extension will open (or try to open) with the program you selected. Repeat the process but this time, select the program that should be used for opening that particular type of file - make sure the box is checked.

Well,I followed the Automated Removal instructions, but there was at least one significant discrepancy : the Roguescanfix went straight to Brute Force - there was no Virusburst Uninstaller.I would try the manual procedure, but the FixVB.reg link just connects to a page of text.Dunno what to do with that.

So here's the log:

I used my recovery cd, put it in drive then booted computer. It went thru this thing about setting up files, then ask me if I wanted to install or recovery console. I chose install, then repair and it started setting up windows. But after it was done and I went into windows, everything was still there. I thought it basically erased everything and put it back the way it was when you got it. But every program that has been loaded or downloaded was still there and still have the 100% cpu usage.

Answer:Recovery Disk didn't work

When you selete repair it will only fix the windows files. So if you have a third party app that is causing problems a repair install will not fix it. If you want to erase everything on you machine and start from scratch you have to choose new install and format the current partitions. ***Warning*** this will erase everything on your computer so be sure to back up any important files.

Also have you tried running a spyware and virus scan? We may be able to fix the problem with out having to erase your entire machine.

After formatting my dell PC I installed a new OS win 7 but windows couldn't start it just crashes after showing "Windows starting". I tried to repair using the startup repair method /even advanced boot option none of these is working for me. I read many forums but finally am not done yet. And I don't have system image or backup as I formatted it. Could you help me please? And safe mode is not working too.

Answer:Startup repair didn't work

If safe mode is not working either, it could mean you have a hardware problem.Start by testing the hard drive with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility on a boot disc.Seagate SeaTools will test any brand of hard drive, you'll need SeaTools for DOS as that version runs off a bootable CD: edited by phil22

But I'm not getting any instructions- it goes straight to Windows! What should I do differently?

Answer:My solution with G580 didn't work

Hi ETS613,
Thanks for Posting!
If you're trying to load a bootable CD, Here's is what you may try.
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following settings:
Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Win7 OS
When finished, hit Load default settings (just right above it) then set these additional settings:
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled
Boot Tab:
Boot Mode = Legacy
Boot Priority = Legacy First
2. When finished, hit Fn+F10 to save and exit.
3. Restart the computer and start tapping F12 to pull up the boot menu, There you can select the CD/DVD.

I am having the same problems as many others on here with malware (virtumonde, Zlob, etc.) and also lots and lots of popups. I was in the process of going thru the "read this first" thread but while I was at work last night my wife came here and bought an annual subs. to Spyware Doctor. She said it found all the programs that Adware is finding but not fixing. After the required reboot, windows boots fine and goes to the user accounts screen, but when you select a user, it tries to load, flashes an image of your background, and then logs off immediately. What gives. Any suggestions?

Answer:Spyware Doctor didn't work

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Are you saying your problem began after installing and running Spyware Doctor??
Had you run any of the READ & RUN ME? How much? It would have been much better to have completed the READ ME and not installed or run anything else to interfere/interrupt the process.

Can you boot in safe mode and login?

If not, you may have corrupted your registry and may need to fix this before we can help you with any malware removal. You would have to work the inability to boot an login by posting a message in the Software Forum.

Trying to help my sister (in another State). She's running MSN on Windows ME and tried to install an MSN update this morning. She's not sure what happened but the install either hung or didn't complete and she rebooted. She's no longer able to connect. The modem dials but won't connect. Just comes back and tries to redial. We tried uninstalling MSN and reinstalling from her MSN 8 CD but we got the same results. From her description, it didn't seem to me that MSN completely uninstalled through Add/Remove Programs though I don't know if it makes any difference. We didn't go through reinstalling the modem since it appears to be working fine according to Properties and it was working fine before the attempt to update. I'm not familiar with MSN since I use a different provider. Any suggestions? Thanks!

ok, SO my ps2 started doing Disk Read Errors and eventually I gave up on it. I found out how to fix it by rotating the little white gear and that worked. Everything worked for a while but now my PS2 games wont run anymore. My demodisk which is a DVD-ROm runs but ATV Offroad Fury and SSX 3 wont run. I've been through every notch on the gear twice and it wont work. I put the CDS in another PS2 and they booted up perfectly. I've had my PS2 for like 2 years so I dont have warrenty (I broke the seal so warrenty's out anyway) What do I do? is there a way to adjust the angle of the lense wuthout using the gear or am I screwed?

Answer:PS2 DRE and gear meathod didn't work

My 2001 PS2 has stopped playing DVDs and PS2 games for no reason and SONY is repairing it for free. (My PS2 was also out of warranty). I think it's an known issue, and SONY are willing to repair it because it might be a defect in 2001 PS2s, but if the4 PS2 you have looks tampered with, then they will charge you for the repair (or not if the rpair is more than $200.00)

All of a sudden my cd/dvd drive has vanished. The door will not open when I press the button. It doesn't show up on Device Manager and it is not in BIOS either. I did not download anything that should have caused this. I tried the fixes I found on various help pages - the Doug Knox did not work. I also followed the Microsoft instructions to go into the registry and delete the upper and lower filters but when I got there, there were no filters so that didn't help either. I have rebooted numerous times, both hard and soft. I have also in desperation tried pulling the plug. Nothing has worked. I suppose it could be the drive itself, but I doubt it because it has been lightly used and it should still show up on the device mgr. I am hoping someone has another suggestion. Thanks.

I get a new Qosmio G50 on christmas and now I have a little problem. I use a D-link draft-N access point and I want to use the 802.11n mode with my qosmio. But I have some problems with it. I activated the 802.11n mode in the device manager and channelbandwidth band 2.4 & 5.2 are both set on "auto"!! But I dont get the 300mbps, 60mbps is the most what I get. My father has a notebook from an other manufacture with also a 802.11n wireless card but not from Intel and with the other notebook I get the 300mbps! I can put the notebooks together in the same room, the other get 300mbps the qosmio fluctuates from 1 to 81mbps or so.

Do anybody know whats going wrong or do I have to change something at the device manager?? I heard that many other intel wifi 5100 owners also dont get the 300mbps speed.

can anybody help me??

Answer:Qosmio G50 802.11n activated but didn't work correctly

Have you tried turning off 802.11g/b/a modes by setting it to "802.11n Only"?

Go to the Wireless LAN device settings in Device Manager to change these settings.

Remember that 300Mpbs is the signal speed. Actual data transfer speed (minus the overhead) is less than 100Mbps

Hi.My computer is a HP Pavilion dv1000. I don't really know many of the other details on it.  It had been working just fine.  My daughter was trying to get into, it wouldn't load, she got upset and shut the lid pretty hard.  Then this problem occurred the next time I tried to turn it on.  Also, the XP disc I used had never been opened before.  The only program that I've added to the computer recently is MSN Works & Money.I got the message NTDETECT failed. So I tried to repair the system using the XP disc. That didn't take. So I tried just reinstalling the whole thing and it got to about 11% or so and everything after that said it couldn't be installed. It told me to press [Enter] to try again (which didn't work), [Esc] to skip, or F3 to quit. I tried skipping, despite the message that it might not end up loading correctly, but nothing else would install.I have 3 partitions, #1 doesn't have enough room. I tried installing it on the 2nd partition which, from what I can tell, is where xp is currently loaded.  It had the above problem.  And the 3rd one is empty but wouldn't let me install on it either.I'm not even sure what question to ask. Simply "help?" Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer:NTDETECT failed, tried reinstalling XP - didn't work

I would like to welcome you to ComputerHope, it's unfortunate about the circumstances however. If the laptop was closed really hard that might have damaged some hardware.  Other than taking it in for warranty work I really have no suggestion.  Just don't admit the 'Hard' closing of the laptop.

Right now my son has a Lenovo lap top with Win 8.1, 32-bit...and got the dns probe finished nxdomain error when he opened google chrome.

IE refused to load

So using his tablet, he searched the error message and it told him to first do a dns flush....which he did and it didn't work.

The second recommend was to change dns settings in the network and security options... this did not work either.

Then he attempted a system restore to a previous stored point before this issue and that did not help either.

We tried replacing a dnsdapi.dll file and that did not work either.

Any applications that require the internet will not work and gave the error msg....dnsadpi.dll file is missing from your computer and try reinstalled (which I mentioned that we attempted and did not work).

I am currently typing this from my computer, because his is a pretty paperweight at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:DNS probe flush and dns reset didn't work

What makes you think this is a malware problem?

You said the dnsadpi.dll file is reported as missing! Did you check to see if it is really missing?

When you did the System Restore, you said it did not fix the problem but did the System Restore actually complete? Also did you try other restore points?

If you believe it is somehow due to malware, please follow the instructions in the below link:

My dad had been downloading a lot of Chinese software over the last four months without using ANY protection. Heck, this desktop has been reformatted multiple times already because he seemed to be an expert at running it into the ground. Surprisingly, it can run on normal mode, but it is pretty deathly slow.

To make matters worse, I may have accidentally downloaded the download manager, mistaking it for the actual download, and a bunch of other software found its way on May 31 when I downloaded Dropbox, Auslogics Defrag, Advanced SystemCare, Avast, and Foxit. I wish I took a picture of them all, but I used the standard uninstaller for some of them before turning to Iobit uninstaller, so registry files may still be lingering. I deleted them and a bunch of Chinese apps. Some suspicious files: Youku, Privacyware, Python 2.5.2 (which refuses to uninstall), etc.

On May 31, I ran malwarebytes. A quick scan already produced 35 threats, and a full scan captured 15 more. Over several days, I ran the full scan twice, but nothing happened.

Then I attempted everything on the two stickies (though I downloaded most of the programs onto the downloads folder and was slow or maybe even sloppy to realize that I needed to disable windows live and superantispyware came up with 30+ more threats. Tencent was extremely prominent, which also happened to show up on this thread:

I also was an idiot and installed 7zip in the middle, f... Read more

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

I had Avast installed, but when I noticed that it never updated itself, nor gave me the option to, I uninstalled it, and installed Microsoft Security. I still got a virus. I tried to put avast back on, but Got the message "setup cannot be downloaded" when I tried to execute the startup file. I've gone through the CP add/remove but the AV programs are not listed. How can I remove all traces of the previous AV install attempts so that I can get a "fresh start"?:confused

Answer:Antivirus Program didn't work this time!

Please follow these instructions:

I have a two monitor setup (main is a Dell 2209WA and the secondary is a Dell 1703fp), but today when I turned on my computer, it was as if the computer only recognized my secondary monitor. This has happened once before to me and eventually ended up being a dead GPU. I decided to test the graphics card this time, and tried running a 3d intensive game on the monitor that was working; everything seemed to be working fine. I noticed, however, that while the 2209 was plugged into my computer, I could not turn the 2209 off. It was only when I unplugged the DVI cable from the computer did the monitor become somewhat responsive to my trying to turn it off.

I finally reset the surge protector and reattached both monitors to the GPU and now both monitors seem to be working fine.

The question is what could have caused my main monitor to act that way and is my GPU in danger?

Answer:Monitor didn't work; wouldn't shut off

It happened again today. I turned the computer on but the monitor (2209) never left standby mode. While the computer was on, holding the power button on the monitor did nothing. I reset the surge protector and everything was working normally again. Any ideas what could cause my monitor to become non-responsive and Windows' failure to recognize that it is attached, thereafter?

I have XP defender virus. Had to borrow a slow old computer in order to get on the internet to get the instructions for removal. Last time I used a bleeping computer removal guide, it worked. This time, it didn't.
I have run the instructions from twice through, carefully following the steps. The version I have does not look quite like this; it doesn't have a date, but wherever I've looked for help, all the instructions refer to "2013". Does this make a difference?
I have run 2 versions of rkill as instructed. The 2nd time it said it hadn't found anything. The 2nd time I ran MBAM it said it didn't find anything. I ran it in safe mode; I restarted in safe mode, then I restarted in normal mode. I also tried "file assassin" in MBAM which seems to have taken the XP Defender shortcut off the desktop but the program is still running. I can't get onto the internet or download anything onto the infected computer.
What can I do? Is there another version of removal instructions?

[Edit: just tried to shut down computer & got 2 "program not responding" windows for something called Apoint.exe . Never seen that before.]

Answer:XP-Defender removal instructions didn't work

When I press Sleep at start menu, screen just goes to black for 1-2 seconds and after Windows Logon menu appears.

I've tried Allow waker timers to off, When sharing media to Allow the computer to sleep, Allow hybrid sleep to On/Off, USB selective suspend settings to Enabled/Disabled.

I unchecked "Allow this device to wake the computer box" settings in Device Manager for my network card and usb mouse. (I'm using desktop)

I also typed "Powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" at cmd to see which devices wake my computer up but it shows nothing. Just a blank line.

I checked event viewer to see what is the problem but I couldn't find anything in Windows Logs, Custom Views and Application and Services Logs.

On the other hand I can see Hibernate option at start menu when I set Hybrid Sleep to Off. This was a little bit confusing becasue it shows when it set to Off and disappears when set to On. Whatever, when it shows, than sleep is partially working but hibernate isn't. My computer goes sleep, but when I open it again I get blue screen error everytime says something like memory dump...

I really want to use Sleep option properly. If is there any idea, I'd like to give a shot.

Answer:Not sleeping (general solutions didn't work)

Have you checked in the BIOS that sleep is enabled?

Hi, my name is Tiapoo & I am having a lot of trouble getting rid of popup webpages and popup ad video clips.  I contacted Microsoft for remote assistance.  I have a PC, windows 7 system.  I was told I had malware, adware, etc.  Microsoft remotely removed whatever they removed and the popups seemed to stop popping up.
But, within a couple of hours, it started up again.  Not only did the representative knock out my printer from my system as well as my adobe acrobat 9 standard program. When I found my CD from my installation package to reinstall adobe, I found out that my dvd drive wasn't showing on my computer.
A few months ago, I experienced this same adware problem so I went to a technical site (not Microsoft) that instructed me to use adware & malware removal sites.  I did all 4 sites that were given to me in the specific order they had requested. I even sent those logs they requested I send to them.  I also contacted my antivirus support (Kaspersky Pure 3.0) & they had be do some similar things.  I don't recall how it got resolved now but it all looked as if it was fixed at that time.  But, the same problem is back.
Microsoft is going to get back with me to reinstall my windows 7 again but I'm not eager to do that unless it's the only way to get rid of the adwre & malware as well as to get my DVD drive & printer functioning again.
So, one thing at a time.  Can so... Read more

Answer:Adware/Malware solutions didn't work

Ello mate, my name is Allen and I'll be helping you today
So first off lets start by running adwcleaner which can be found here
What adwcleaner will do is scan your system for adware and remove it for you.
After that I recommend running malwarebytes antimalware to see if there is anything left you can get that here
Make sure you update the database on malwarebytes and run a full scan.
Once that's done post the logs in a reply to see what we're dealing with.

My computer is a HP. I don't really know the other details on it. But I got the message NTDETECT failed. So I tried to repair the system using the XP disc. That didn't take. So I tried just reinstalling the whole thing and it got to about 11% and everything after that said it couldn't be installed. It told me to press [Enter] to try again (which didn't work), [Esc] to skip, or F3 to quit. I tried skipping, despite the message that it might not end up loading correctly. and nothing else would install.
I have 3 partitions, one doesn't have enough room. I tried installing it on the 2nd partition which, from what I can tell, is where xp is currently loaded. And the 3rd one is empty but wouldn't let me install on it.
I'm not even sure what question to ask. Simply "help?" Thanks for any help you can give me.
