Question: Recover Harddrive

Hey  My laptop recently died on me the Graphics Card inside it has broken and it has to be sent for repair so that is some good news for me today however the repair guy says that all the data will have to be erased from the computer but i ain't being ripped off to pay a fortune to recover my hard drive when i could do it myself so this is my question? How could i recover am laptop hard drive with a broken graphics card? I know some programs can let you see what files you want but the Grpahics Card has broken so that idea is out the window, I was wondering if i could just plug my portable USB  hard drive in to the computer via USB and it would just start grabbing the data off the computer?Or would i have to go around this a different way optionally i would like it if i could just plug the portable HDD in the computer and then it will copy all the files without any hassle? Thanks for your time!

Swapping the boards is only part of the process. You need to make sure the rev of the board and firmware is exact for both drives controller boards ... Do they match?

Hi,
if this is posted in the wrong forum, then please move it to the right place...

My problem is that I ran the recovery CDs (for XP) on my harddrive, believing that I had all data securely backed up. Big mistake. It turns out that I cannot read/find the files (pics) on the DVD (my backup). Some files and folders have been copied onto the DVD correctly, but other files appear to be missing and in many cases entire folders are labelled "Folder is Empty" when trying to open them. On one of my DVDs containing the backup, the info provided in "my computer" says that it contains 4.22GB data, but when going onto the DVD itself and adding together all the files and folders, then it adds up to no more than 3GB. It clearly seems like data has been copied, but somehow I cannot see it (same result on 2 different computers).

What could be the problem? Is there an easy way to recover my files on the DVD?

If not, how much of a chance would I have when it comes to recover the files from the harddrive on which I have run the recovery CDs? After running the recovery CDs, nothing has been written or deleted onto the harddrive. The harddrive is 80GB and the pic files I'd like to recover are no more than 1-2GB in total, so there should be a good chance that the new Windows+applications is not going to sit on top of my files.

Apart from an estimate on how much of my files on the harddrive I can hope to recover, can I expect my recovered files be complete, i.e not p... Read more

Hi guys and gals.  A friend asked me to retrieve some pictures from his Dell computer which won't boot. I thought I could slave the harddrive to my pc and save the pictures but the Western Digital connection is not the same as what's on my pc. Is there an adapter available for this type of harddrive? When I boot the computer I get a black screen saying that there is a hardware or software problem and recommends I do a "Launch Setup Repair". I hit enter and it just comes back to the same message. I can choose "start Windows Normally" but it just goes to a black screen. I ran a diagnostic on the harddrive and it passed. I also ran a Memtest86 on the RAM which also passed the test. I have a Recovery Disk but I'm more concerned with saving the pictures first. Any ideas?

I defraged my Windows ME partition, and all ok until I tried to load Mandrake Linux, which had be corrupted by the defrag. I then attempted to re install Linux, but it took the whole drive (39G). so I did not have Windows. After a great deal of trouble attempting to reformat drive using Fdisk, I resorted again to the recover CD, which announced that the Media in drive C was not recognised. But in frustration I pressed escape and return a number of time and the drive was re formatted, but only approx 29G. I have now a working Windows system but not enough room on the partition to fully load Linux. Somewhere on the Drive there is about 9G unacconted for, which neither windows or linux appear to recognise. Fdisk displays :partition status type vollabel mb system usage 1 EXT DOS %C: 2 A PRI DOS HPPavilion30602Mb 80%System FAT32Whilst I understand what is displayed none of the Fdisk functions will recover the lost 9Mb, Can any one help, Ido not want to re format the whole drive again. but would like to run linux in the lost partition.

Hi guys,
well heres the story: My sister brought me a computer to fix for her friend who owns a restaurant. So all i did was an easy fix formatted the hard drive and installed windows. Well i brought it back to the owner and she is very sad that i have deleted all the files on the computer. If i knew she wanted to recover the data i would have installed the hard drive into my computer and backed it up for her but i didn't know.
Heres the problem: She had a lot of records stored on the computer she needs and I was wondering if there was a way to restore some of her data that i formatted? I am willing to buy the software because i am getting more ppl who ask me to fix their computer. I know that since i installed windows on it, that it is impossible to recover all the formatted data but I think if i just get some she will be happy. I thank you for any help. Thank you.

Alright well first let me direct you to my previous cry for help:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...se-452422.html

I originally thought I had some sort of virus, but it turns out my disk is failing...

I need some help on how to recover everything.

Here is what I have.

C: (Failing drive) with Vista Home Premium
D: 1TB storage Hard Drive with some games on it (Steam)
E: Old Harddrive I pulled from an old pc, with windows xp on it except it won't run without a BSOD unless in safemode

I don't have a vista installation disk or anything, but I do have the OS Key.

Should I move over my important files to my D: and then install vista on there to make it my new C:? or should I format my failing drive and reinstall vista? I'm not sure if it will just fail again or not. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you very much for any help

Hi

I need to help someone recover data from a dead scusi harddrive,

I have not yet inspected the device but I am told the computer makes a beep when it starts then fails to read the disk and wont load the operating system.

I was under the impression that a single beep indicated it had found your harddrive, but I maybe wrong.

It also has a scusi card so could it be possible that the card has failed?

I have the ultimate boot CD so I will possibly be able to do some scans on it with this, but is it possible to recover the data myself without sending it off and paying a small fortune?

If so then how do I go about doing this do I need to connect another harddrive to it to transfer the data?

and what software will I need???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My old laptop's motherboard died, probably as a result of overheating.  The harddrive is RAID 0; two drives stacked on top of each other.  I've had some friends look at it, and they recommended a 2.5" PATA/IDE enclosure kit.  I found this one at tigerdirect - Sabrent 2.5" USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure.  Will I still be able to recover the data one drive at a time, even though it is RAID 0?  I also looked into IDE cable adaptors, but again, the IDE cable adaptors I've found only connect to one harddrive at a time.  Thank your for any help you can give me.

My cousin's laptop recently went to crap. The windows system startup folder got corrupted. Anyway, I pulled the harddrive and plugged it into my desktop to pull off her personal files (System restore/repair with CD did Not work)
Anyway, I got it to show up fine on my machine, but every single folder, subfolder, and file requires me to go through the arduous process of about 7-10 clicks to 'acquire the security permissions'
Since there are a good 4-600 photos alone, and numerous folders and subfolders, this obviously is not a very efficient method.
After poking around some, it seems like running the takeown commands through the disk would solve this issue...am I correct in assuming that or do I need to run down a different avenue?

Thanks!

Hi,

I recently broke my laptop and as it was fairly old decided to upgrade instead of trying to fix it, however I want to get the data from my old laptop to upload onot my new one.

I have a external enclosure for a laptop harddrive that I can slave off but my issue is that the drive from my old laptop is partitioned (C:\ & D:\). My new laptop's system drive is C:\ so when I plug in the harddrive it detects but does not come up as a drive. I've tried to change the drive letter of the C:\ drive but as it's the system drive it won't let me, anyone know what I can do?

Any suggestions would be most welcome, I have 3 years worth of emails on my old harddrive which I really don't want to lose.

Thanks,

Dillonmr

Answer:Broken laptop - recover harddrive data

Not sure why the partitions aren't showing up, but I can tell you there is absolutely no point in changing the drive letter as it wouldn't help you access the external drive and could really screw up your current system. What operating sytem were you running on the old drive? If the partitions are formatted as NTFS, they could be refusing to mount due to an "unclean shutdown".

I got a client with their Mac OS screwing up on them with this sort of "Whiting out" of the MacBook screen past login and I'm trying to recover these internal files locked away from the Apple OS format. HFS can detect the recovery, but not the main disk of 222.22 GB of storage that's just locked away there, unable to be labeled or opened for as far as I can tell. What do I do to read this Hard drive? It's not an external one either, it's straight from a mac laptop.

Hello,

I have a major problem. Because my laptop was having problems involving the 'blue screen of death', I chose to backup my files to an external portable harddrive before reformatting the entire drive.

However, when opening the backup folder, I discovered that my art folder, located in the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder was not to be found.

What is the BEST method to recover the files from the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder? I had almost 5GIGS worth of pictures.

I KNOW there is a way to recover the files, but not sure if they will even be located in the Public Pictures folder. Is it possible that after reformatting, Windows 7 relocated the contents of the 'Public Pictures' folder to another place on the drive?

Is it possible to restore the folder to previous versions AFTER reformatting the drive?

Can someone PLEASE help me?? This is seven years worth of photos I saved that I'm desperately trying to recover.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for your patience and assistance.

Answer:HELP!!! RECOVER Public Pictures Folder AFTER reformatting harddrive!!!

Can someone please help me? I'd really need to recovery these files WITH the exact file names associated to them.

Does anyone know of a free method to recover them from the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder AFTER reformatting the harddrive?

Would appreciate any help!!

I'm in desperate need to recover things from my corrupted D drive. When I click on it, it says D:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. When I restart it always does chkdsk for that drive, but it can't repair the corrupt master file table, and it's the same result where the drive is unreadable. I used the Getdata recover my files software to recover the drive. It didn't find the things I desperately need, and I noticed a bunch of files it recovered is now corrupt.

The most important thing I need to recover is a windows movie maker project that I've spent hours upon hours upon hours on for a music video. I so desperately need that .mswmm file. This software found just about all of my windows movie maker projects except that one, just my luck.

The second most important thing I need is my Adobe Audition session files along with the wav's for the sessions. I have a new computer I should be getting today, and my friend will be over in 2 days. I need to figure something out quickly cause he will need to format the drive which will make it lose everything. He is pretty sure that the drive will be unreadable on his laptop which he's bringing over.

It recovered 2 936gb files and a 465 gb file with no file extensions that were labeled $BadClus~$Bad_1 $BadClus~$Bad_3 & $BadClus~$Bad_4 Is there anything I can do to open these files to try to retrieve anything from it?

Answer:Need to recover files from a corrupt unreadable NTFS harddrive

Actually the programs to recover deleted and corrupted files from a drive are not very professional inspite of what they claim. In my experience they hardly ever do a good and professional job.

Only a real professional can make a good and acceptable recovery of corrupted files from a corrupted drive. These professionals charge the earth for it. For Home Users it is hardly ever worth it. But that is my opinion. May be there are others who can give good guidance on this subject so that you are able to recover your data.

I wish you Good Luck

First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. Thatís why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

So my brother dropped his computer to the ground, and now it is not working properly.
I started windows in repair mode, but the computer freezes like this https://imgur.com/Pq1ncSs, but without the repair box.
I was wondering if it is possible to recover some of the files and stuff on the HD, when the computer is unable to boot.
I have taken out the harddrive from my brother's computer, and put it in to my own computer. When i did that, my own computer asked me if i wanted to run a disk-controll or something like that. After it finished, the computer has freezed like this: Imgur
The text at the bottom says: Controll of usn log complete. It has been like that for almost half an hour now, and i am not sure of what to do.
Answers are much appreciated.

Answer:Need help to recover files from a "dead" harddrive

Hello haakelv!

What kind of drive is it that your brother has? Brand and model?

The disk controller is plainly said a chip that controls a drive depending on its type – IDE, SCSI etc. It enables the CPU to “communicate” with the HDD.
The USN Journal is connected with the NTFS format and it maintains a record of changes which were made to the volume.

From what I understand by dropping his PC, your brother broke his hard drive's disk controller which nowadays is integrated in the hard drive itself, and evidently inserting the drive in to your system led to a USN Journal scan, which (if I am translating correctly) CHKDSK has checked the USN log, has repaired the USN Journal data flow and completed. But the system has hanged.

In my opinion the drive is too damaged to load, the disk controller is most likely broken, thus the drive can't communicate with the system on a healthy level.

You could plug the drive out, restart your system, plug in the drive again, go in to BIOS to make sure your own disk is at first booting position and see if you could load into your OS and open the drive through My Computer, but I doubt it would work.

You'll have to use a data recovery software or company if you need anything from the drive.

Good luck!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

Hi all!

I recently purchased a new WD Cavier Black with the 32 MB cache. I would like to transfer all my HD contents [including windows vista ultimate] from my older WD 16MB cache HD to this brand spanking new WD Cavier Black HD.

Is it possible to do this without flaws and so that it will work exactly as before?

If yes, can you direct me to the correct information to do this please?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The system in which I would like to do this has these components:

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

Answer:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Answer:2.5 harddrive enclosure will not read the harddrive

Have you foratted the drive? . . Windows will not "see" a drive until it has been formated.

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

Hi,

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Thanks.

Answer:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

Answer:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

It has booted up no problems and running fine as usual but is it necessary to buy a new harddisk? After all, it runs fine even though there are still 700Kb bad sections on existing harddisk. Advice will be much appreciated, thanksGary

Answer:Bad sectors in harddrive - need a new harddrive??

Assuming you reformatted the HD, did the bad sectors show during Formatting or was it some other software that decided you had bad sectors? If it was formatting that disclosed the problem then it may be true. If not it might be a spurious warning and could be ignored.

OKay so the other day i was recovering the files originally on the computer when i got it through the computers recover cd.. And it says something about the hardrive not being connected and having to choose these other things, i remember seeing the words allocation drivers Also there was a blank screen and the computer typed i really hate you and am going to made this difficult for you as if it hadc a mind of its own. So now the computer says there is only 2.5 gb on the hard drive and its a huge 9.6 gb actually. So i need the other space i will destroy something if im stuck with 2.5 gb, so anyways.. if you know what i did and how i can fix it that would be great

Answer:Help please> 2 gb on 9 gb harddrive

lol, looks like a virus or some hidden files to me.Did your recovering CD formatted your hard-drive also or did it only overwrite everything?Maybe the recovering CD has put all your ancient stuff in one large file.Try displaying hiden files and serach for a large file in start->search->search by size or look for a hidden folder in your hard drive root.If you just used the recovery CD, it is likely that you don't have anything important, so I would recommand you formatting manually your hard drive by reinstalling Windows XP yourself if your comfortable with this kind of operation. If not, believe me, installing Windows XP is REALLY easy, everuthing is done almost automatically and the installation software has a formatting tool and it will ask you if you want to do that, just say yes and reformat in FAT32 file format, not in NTFS.

Question: R40 harddrive

I got my old R40 back from my kid and the HD is dead. I purchased a 160G HD to replace the dead 20G. I do not have the old recovery disc which was I believe the XP OS. I do have the Vista recovery disc that I used on my T60 . I installed the new HD and it seems that the R40 recognizes it but it will not boot up using the Vista recovery CD. The system goes through a startup but comes back with "operating system not found". So I guess I have a few questions like do I need to purchase the old XP recovery disc or can I change something in the system to recognize the Vista CD or what do I need to do to get a OP on this system. Thanks

Answer:R40 harddrive

your Vista recovery disc from the T60 won't work in the R40 machine. You can try to find a vista installation disc from somewhere then activate it using the serial number on the T60.However, the vista on R40 would run really slow. It is better that you get the XP pro installation discs from say marketplace on forum.thinkpads.com or ebay.

Answer:want to buy a new harddrive

If you stick to Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor or Fujitsu you won't go far wrong. The main thing is that HDDs are ridiculously cheap today and the larger the capacity the cheaper it works out per GB.A 120GB drive can be priced as little as £56 and a 160GB at just £4 more. Even a 200GB version can be acquired for only £80. Six months or so ago these capacities would have been half those figures. Most of these will be OEM (original equipment manufacturer) offerings, but a WD full retail version for instance would only be around £10 more if you needed the kit.The 7200rpm figure is the spin speed and, obviously, superior performance to 5,400rpm - also look out for a cache of 8MB rather than 2MB; costs a little more but worth it.Could be worth using one as your main drive and the 60GB you have now as a second or backup HDD.Try:click here click here click here and similar online outlets.Scan of Bolton's TodayPage often has even better prices on occasion: click here

Also when i start up windows on the windows load screen my harddrive sticks on it for a while and the busy light flickers off and on and my harddrive clicks. Its like its stuck. and therefore windows takes a while to load. This is the only time i have witnessed the problem.

Thanks for you help!

Question: New Harddrive?

If my hard drive in my HP died, and I wanted a new one, if I went and bought the same brand, and type just more capacity, could I just put it in and it would work if it was brand new? Someone told me something about not being able to just throw a hard drive in a computer. I am seeing if this is true.

Thanks,
Ryan

Question: New Harddrive

Hello,
I got a used laptop that needs a new hard drive. I found the exact model number that's already in the laptop I just need to buy it. I'm wondering how to reinstall the original OS on the new hard drive.
The new hard drive says it's not formatted. I was thinking about ordering the recovery disc from the manufacture website for my exact laptop model, However it's almost $30 for these disc and I'm not sure if a "Recovery Disc" would work or not. Was wondering would this website work https://wudt.codeplex.com/ ? If I created a bootable usb maybe I don't need the disc?

EDIT: Do I need to format the drive before attempting to reinstall the OS and how? Or will the method of reinstalling the OS automatically format the drive?

Answer:New Harddrive

First of all, you don't need to order the exact same model hard drive. The same model will work, of course, but you could also take this as an opportunity to install a larger capacity drive (or even a smaller) or even switch to an ssd instead of an hdd. Unless your laptop is more than a few years old, a 2.5" SATA drive of any capacity should work.

The tool you linked to requires you to first have an ISO of an OS disk in order to write it to a USB and make a bootable USB from it. Does the laptop have a Windows sticker on the bottom with a Product Key? If so, you may be able to download an ISO of the OS.

Your best best is probably to order the recovery disk from the manufacturer. Not only will this install the OS, but it will also install all the required drivers and auxiliary programs. Unfortunately, it will also install any bloatware that came from the factory as well.

You do not need to format the drive beforehand.

Question: harddrive help

Alright, I'll first give you an overview of what i did. I took out an added hard drive from an older computer and wired it to a newer one.  This drive was divided into three partitions/sections (d:/, e:/, and f:/). I wanted to delete those and make a single letter drive.  I was not exactly sure how to do it but i tried anyways (this is all for my enjoyment and it didn't matter if i messed anything up).  I deleted 2 of the drive letter sections (leaving d:/) and created a new partition. It seemed to have worked until i restarted the computer and the "blue screen of death" came up saying windows was not starting for protection reasons or something of the sort and said to reboot. I dont' know what to do because i cannot enter fdisk because i cannot load windows.  Safe mode does nothing. Can anyone help?

Answer:harddrive help

Remove the old hdd from the computer.  Windows didn't seem to like it when you added it in, hence BOD.

I was trying to install Ubuntu Studios on my computer but before i did that i installed Ubuntu Linux Feisty Server (v. 7.04). I installed the server over the entire harddrive so it erased Windows XP because i had intended for Ubuntu Studios to work. At the command line it kept saying that it could not find ubuntu-desktop. so i planned to uninstall Ubuntu Server and reinstall Windows XP. So i put in the Windows XP but it registered that it could not install it until the harddrive was wiped so that it was blank and ubuntu server was gone. So i put the ubuntu server cd back in and tried to delete the harddrive. Now whenever i boot the computer the server doesn't pop up but says:

"GRUB Loading stage 1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 15
_"

the "_" blinks on and off.

So now i tried to form a bootable iso cd of Killdisk but it loads on a black screen saying:

"Loading FreeDOS...
ROOT."

then the "ROOT" part blinks on and off as if trying to load but since i waited for an hour for the bootable Killdisk to pop up, it never did. I thought i might not have a DOS but apparently i do. I tried to form a bootable floppy of Killdisk but it does the same thing. I just need to know how i should erase the harddrive in a easy and simple way.

I decided to upgrade my old (very) 8gb hard drive and replace it with a new 80gb one. As i have another drive as a backup drive i decided to install xp on the new one and use it as my system drive (on a 10gb partition). All went well until i discovered my xp disk will not boot even though i have set cd to boot first in my bios.No problem i thought. What if i take my backup drive out, boot using the old drive, partition and install xp on the new drive, change the drive letters around so the new drive is c, take the old drive out and reboot.Xp installed no prob on the new drive, but i cant change the letters over, and if i try to boot with just the new drive installed, xp wont boot. If i leave the old drive in however, i can choose between both systems and boot from either - i know i have booted from the new xp as the desktop is different.Any ideas anyone?

Answer:xp on new harddrive

Select the option to start with a command prompt. When you have the prompt, type the drive letter for your CD drive, followed by a colon (E:) and press the enter key. Answer:harddrive

You can always buy a new one. Whether that one can be fixed and what it takes to do so remains to be seen. Do you have any experience with working on computers? If not are you up for it? if the answer is no, then a repair shop or a new purchase is in order. What are the specifics on the machine?

Question: Harddrive help

For the past 2 weeks my hard drive has been running all the time. I have not downloaded anything for over a month and do regular virus/adware/spyware scans. It also seems to be running pretty slow on startup. The only things I have on startup are all the drivers I need to have, nothing more. It takes the Networks (internet connection) 3 minutes to load everytime. It has really effected my gaming too. After about an hour of playing any video game, the game starts lagging really bad and I have to restart. Only to do this in another hour.Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Harddrive help

i would replace the harddrive ASAP. just an added question, how do you know that your harddrive has been running all the time?

I have a 3 year old desktop with 250gb harddrive running Windows XP. I have just bought 500gb internal harddrive, swapped the 2 and installed Windows 7 on new drive. When running Win 7, I cannot see the old hardrive in my computer which is installed on the slave connection. I can see it on Bios and devices but it has no drive letter, also unable to assign drive letter as it is greyed out. When booting using XP I can see both drives in my computer.
Can anyone help?

Answer:Cannot see my old xp harddrive

What dual boot manager do you use? Usually with dual boot only the one in use will be assigned the C: letter.

So a bought a computer a while ago on ebay (bad idea) and it said that the computer comes with a 1000 gb (1 TB) harddrive, when i finally got it, i immediately checked if all the hardware was up to the online specs. One thing i noticed in My Computer, was that only 100 or so giga bytes on the hard drive are available. At first i freaked out, but then noticed that the hard drive itself says 1 TB (no fake sticker). So how do you open up the rest of the space? I read up online and it said that most harddrives this size are like this, but im not sure what the process is like. It has something to do with formatting, partitioning, etc, does that mean ill lose what i already have on the comp? I have windows vista 64-bit and I have a picture attached of how the computer management screen looks. Can you please explain to me exactly what to do? I'm really scared i might lose what i already have on my comp if i do something wrong. Thanks for the help in advance!

Answer:1 TB harddrive = 100 GB???

Ya, get into device manager through control panel, then choose disk management and you'll be able to do what you wish there. rght click the partition and choose an option to format NTFS etc.

Hello,

I've had a computer sitting in my basement for a while and decided i would like to get it running. it had a MoBo in it and cd/dvd drives. i purchased 2x512mb of ram because the computer can only hold 1 gig. those went in fine and the computer seems to read them just fine. now for the hard drive i just purchased and put inside of my computer but when i put in my Windows XP disc it tells me Disk Boot Error and will not go past that screen.

Here is the Computer:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00234149

Here is the motherboard inside:

Here Is The Harddrive Link:

I do believe i purchased the correct harddrive. it is a UDMA and im pretty sure the MoBo is a UDMA.
PLEASE HELP!

Posted here:http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,119548.0.htmlSummary:  Sony VAIO PC fell, windows has not worked since then.  BestBuy thinks it needs a new harddrive but they will charge $300 to officially diagnosis, replace, and insteall it+another $100 for data recovery. This is too expensive, can't afford new PC.If it is just the hardrive, that is 70 bucks, but1)  I want to know for sure it is only the harddrive2)  How do I install a new one?-Can anybody help me with that?Do I just unscrew, then screw it in?  Or is more involved?Any good guidance I can use?Heck if any of you live near me I'd consider hiring you for it!

Answer:Need a new harddrive

If it fell, it's entirely possible the drive was damaged and no longer works. It's also possible something else has broken instead. It's not just a matter of popping in the new drive, you have to reinstall the operating system and drivers. If your computer has recovery CDs, this won't be such a big deal. But if your computer was designed to do recovery from the hard drive, it will be a problem since the recovery files will be on the drive you're taking out.
