Preferred Solution: Solved: XP operating manual

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got a Q700 earlier this year and love it but I am now ready to use some of the advanced features such as TV mode, recording video, and the remote but the manual is very basic and does not show instructions completely or not at all.  Is there somewhere I can find a "Q700 for dummies manual" or is there more detailed info on the PC that I just have not found yet?  I have HD cable for the TV and a seperate B-Ray player so this is priority for connecting.   Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi

It seems to be a Satellite notebook which belongs to Toshiba Australian!
All details should be posted on Toshiba Australian page:

There are different L500/xxx models? if you would not find your unit then this would mean that the information has not been published yet?

Hi

I noticed that some services of Windows 10 Preview although I set them on Manual, they are automatically set to "Manual (trigger start". Why? What is the difference between these two startup modes?

Lastly, with these services, how do I set them to the first startup mode without that they are set to the second startup mode?

Thanks

Hey guys, I need once again more of your help here.

See, I have two pc, one with WinXP and another with Win2000. I have them both linked with a cross paired net cable and the idea is to share the internet between them trough ICS. Why ICS? 'Cause is free. Routers are out of the way, here in Chile they're too expensive.

Ok, so the basic problem is both network cards can't establish their own IP address. I use eth0 to connect to internet with PPPoE on host [WinXP] and it has no problem, but eth1 on host and eth0 on client [Win2K] can't use automatic IP assignation, god knows why. So the only option left is to manually set the IP for both network cards. So far I've been able to set the right IP address to be able to share files between them, but I' still unable to share the internet access on the client.

So what I need is the right IP addresses and DNS and all those numbers listed on the properties page of the networks cards. Regrettably, I know next to nothing about the logic of how the ICS works, so I don't know if I'm missing something, if the DNS has to be 0, or the IP of eth1 on host, or the dns provided by the ISP, etc, I'm just clueless.

So it would be a reeeeeeeally big favor if someone could teach me how it works and also how to set both pc to have internet access.

Many many thks in advance!

I'm prone to screwing things up so I thought I had better ask ya'll before I did anything!

a few days ago i went and installed a big update or other for vista. when my computer restarted (as they always do for updates) it gave a me a black screen with the documents window ope. i had to go and start explorer.exe manually using ctrl+alt+delete. ever since that update, it's been doing the same thing. I tried a system restore to apoint well before those updates, that didn't work, it gave me an error saying it couldn't complete. i tried adding explorer.exe to the startup programs list, still nothing. any help? thanks in advance.

Answer:[SOLVED] explorer.exe manual start

Hello niftygecko

Welcome to TSF

Normally this happens when the registry has been changed during a previously failed backup or as you stated an update

1. Click the start menu and type
'regedit' and hit "Enter".

2. Naviaget to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

3. Click on "Winlogon" then locate the shell string in the right pane.

4. Double click it and replace the value with:

explorer.exe

5. Click Ok and exit regedit,

6. Reboot and you should be ok :)

any ideas?

Answer:[SOLVED] Explorer.exe Manual Start II

Hi -

I moved your post from the 7 month old dormant thread and created a new one here for you.

The referenced thread - http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...ual-start.html

I see you have x64 system, but the registry key is the same one in the referenced thread. You are missing part of the HKLM path. You should not be in the wow6432node key. Look for this specifically -

Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

After you click 1x on \winlogon, look to the right and you'll see shell next to a red icon. 2x-left click on red icon next to shell and type explorer.exe

Before changing anything in the registry - please back it up. The easiest eway is to create a system resotre point using Windows System Restore -
START | type rstrui

Hi guys

I have an Optiquest flat monitor - works great. But starting two days ago something changed. We turn off the computer each night and restart it in the morning. We never touched the on/off button on the monitor - so when we restarted the computer, the monitor was always alert.
But something has changed? The last two mornings, when we press the start button on the computer, the monitor does not light up unless we also press its start button.
Any idea how to change this back to the way it was?

Hi Everyone:

I'm repairing a Packard Bell laptop (easy note n65 model: bv etna-gm) for a client which turns on and then immediately will turn off again and won't even turn on, if the battery is removed. So after speaking with the client and a quick examination, I've traced the probable cause to an incorrectly fitted power jack (he had replaced in his works technical department after the original fussed with the original power adapter.) This replacement power jack hasn't worked and you can even move the power adapter when connected in any direction, you please, there's loads of play and is shorting causing the computer to shut down.

So I'm pretty confident in my diagnosis, but I still need to get down to the board and de-solder the jack and if necessary replace it. But this is proving a b^úch to disassemble and rather than go in blindly, I was wondering if someone could point me to a service manual for this model

many thanks,

Hey all!

I am looking to buy a new case. I really like the design of the Corsair Graphite 600T. But I need to see what the wiring is like and what kind of connectors they use. Can someone PLEASE direct me to the manual for this case? I have been looking for the manual far and wide and I can't find it anywhere. Naturally, you would think that a manufacturer like Corsair is foreseeing and understanding, and that they would publish the manual on their website. But oh no...

I only managed to find an FAQ section for cases under the Support menu, all other support options require login. I also found a buyer's guide for cases (Technical resources - Buyer's guide). There's also Downloads under the Technical resources menu, right where I expected to find it (either that or under Support). But the page that loaded up only contained download links for mice, keyboards and other products, no cases there.

Thanks!

So I'm on an epic quest about this obsolete motherboard of mine - However, I've been utterly unable to locate a manual for it ANYWHERE. Standard Google searches just aren't throwing up the goods, so I've decided to throw myself on the mercy of the forum-goers.
Please help me locate this manual! And if you DO find it - please let me know HOW you found it, as I've been working with ancient tech of late, and about half the motherboard manuals I've looked for are nowhere to be found, or the links that say they're for the manual are generally dead. My printer driver has somehow become corrupted, and now I cannot even uninstall it to do a clean install. Does anyone know how to manually uninstall (i.e. files/registry entries to delete) a print driver? Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Manual Uninstallation of Print Driver

Download and install and use the free version of Revo Uninstaller 1.91.

After you start it and it displays your list of programs and drivers, select the driver you want to uninstall, then click the "Uninstall" button.

If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall, don't!

Select all the bolded registry entries that are displayed, then remove them.

Select all the leftover files and folders that are displayed, then remove them.

After all that is done, restart the computer.

I have QB 2009 - we had a payroll tax subscription that calculated taxes and we filed our own reports. Suddenly it no longer works and I want to go back to manually calculating the taxes, inputting them and printing the checks. I used to be able to do this.

For 2 days I've been round and round with their tech support and I'm almost to tears every time I try to explain for the nth time and go thru the attempts to update for the nth time.

What is happening is that when I click Employees, pay unscheduled paycheck, then click an employee, it is telling me QB doesn't have all the info it needs and I then get stuck in a loop of screens asking me to verify the NM UI and withholding rates. I can never go past that to get into the paycheck creation screen.

One helpful soul tried to tell me that I would now have to do them through the WRITE CHECK screen. Is this correct? Or is there something else I can do to try to get back to doing it manually? That's going to be a pain if it's true.

I'm an accountant more or less, so I am familiar with all the accounts involved and rates and such.

Thanks
UPDATE: For anyone else going thru this #@#%. FINALLY got a tech who actually helped. I had to go into each employee record, edit the tax info on that employee, remove the state taxes on the "Other" tab, and I was able to get into the create paycheck screen. Thanks to all the 91+ people who looked at my problem so fast!

I loaded and like using the free online backup service Mozy (mozy.com) but like many services it has the annoying habit of wanting to run its utility programs constantly in the background which uses up system resources.

I have no need for Mozy to run constantly in the background since I manually do my own backups once every couple of months. Unfortunately the mozybackup.exe files wants to run constantly and use resources and will not allow me to turn off in task manager.

How can I turn off mozybackup.exe and will it hinder me manually starting and using the program in the future??

thx in advance for any help.

Answer:Solved: Manual Shut down of resourse hogs like Mozybackup.exe?

I don't know the particular program, but as a general guide

Make sure that you have administrator permisions on that computer.
Press windows + R to bring up the Run menu, and type Services.msc.
Make sure that there isn't a Mozybackup service running, and if there is, right click properties and choose manual from the dropdown menu.

Then type MSConfig, go to startup, and uncheck Mozybackup. Restart, and hopefully it won't run.

Please excuse me if there is any bad language in this post. I'm pretty sure that I removed it all. But I might have missed some.

Today, I bought an LG Blue-ray Disc Player model BP340 (at Wallmart). I bought the best model I could find because I wanted a good reliable product. Mostly what I wanted was a good User Interface. I wanted a large number of variable speeds to view my videos - both fast forward and slow motion forward - both forward and reverse.

But I am now very unhappy. It's probably my own stupid fault. Probably my lack of understanding.

I have bought several other DVD players in the past and found all of them to be lacking in one way or another - in regards to their user interface. I wanted the best user interface available and I was willing to pay as much as necessary to get it.

My main problem with this player is that I want to have a permanent display on the screen that shows how much of a program I have played so far and/or how much of a program is yet to be played. This is something that most all other players always do easily and I'm guessing this one will also do it. I just can't figure out how.

The first problem I encountered with this player was trying to understand the User Manual. That was because there was no user manual. There is a piece of paper that comes in the box and it says, "To view the instructions of advanced features visit http://www.lg.com and then download Owner's Manual."

I went to that web site ... Read more

I am trying to connect my Nook to my wireless network. When I originally set the network up, I wrote down EVERYTHING: router password, network name, network security key, security type, IP address, network name & network passphrase.

The original set up was with a now unused laptop; I have since successfully connected a desktop wirelessly to the network but the Nook keeps telling me I'm entering the wrong wireless password.

I can access the router page through the IP address using the info I said I have above and have not been able to figure out the password. From what I can tell, there's no way to recover my encrypted password and I need to do a factory reset to my router and set it up from scratch again. (If I'm wrong on that, PLEASE someone let me know!)

I guess my question is ultimately this: if I have to do a master reset to my router, do I have to use a cable to connect it to my PC when I'm setting it back up? The computer is on a different floor than the router and I don't think there's a cable long enough (that I can afford!) to connect them.

Sorry, it's Windows Vista 64 bit and a Linksys wireless router WRT54G2.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi All,

Does anyone know where Symantec Live Update gets its list of programs to update? I had to manually uninstall Winfax, using instructions from the symatec web site and it still shows up in Live Update. I've searched the registry for winfax, deleted a couple of keys that symantec didn't mention in their instructions & can't seem to find it. Thanks in advance.

Answer:(Solved) WinFax still in Live update list after manual uninstall

Hi Again,

Found it! C:\Documents & Settings\All users\Application Data\Symantec\Live Update. Right click Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate files Properties uncheck Read only, Open with notepad Delete Winfax, renumber products listed after winfax, save, recheck Read only. Repeat on all Product.Catalog. Files.

I was having problems updating the July issue of MSAS Beta 1, and now that the November issue is available, found that removing all of the remnants left-over by uninstalling using Add/Remove from the Control Panel turned out to be a real pain.

Ok, so I get the remnants squared away with Registrar Lite using case-sensitive scans, and install the November issue of MSAS Beta with Total Uninstall - so, when I need to uninstall, it will uninstall everything that was installed.

Now that I have the new issue, I know there are updates #5775 as of Nov 10, 2005, #5777, and #5779. The About MSAS Help pull-down reveals that I have #5773 definitions, and says I have the latest?

When my laptop is turned on I can open the DVD-Rom drive but when I put in any disc it makes the normal sounds, the light flashes then nothing. I opened quickplay with a disc in the drive and it says no disc found. When I try to open the drive the light flashes then doesn't open. If I leave it for a bit then try to open the drive I get absolutely nothing...no sound no flashing light.

Is it the drive itself or something to do with the software? I'm running Vista on an HP dv2000 laptop.

I have Win XP SP3. I had just reinstalled XP SP2 on the C drive. When I reboot my PC, it gives me 2 options of Microsoft Windows to choose from. By default the first option is selected which is the latest XP SP2 that I had installed.
I logged in using my old XP SP3 and deleted the windows folder of the new XP SP2 that I installed. Yet I still get the option of 2 Microsoft Windows when I reboot the PC. How can I get rid of this? I want the old Microsoft Windows to be selected by default or maybe totally get rid of the option page. I directly want to get logged in with my old Windows XP3 without any options. Is it possible ? Or do I have to reformat and reinstall XP again ??

i am looking at an athlon 3500 cpu and it says it has a Front side Bus of 1 GHz but the Operating freq is 2.2 GHz so what is the difference and what does it mean is the cpu a 1 Ghz or a 2.2 Ghz Im going crazy trying to figure out the cpu and will this processor support a pci express vid card that calls for a 2.4 Ghz Is this Cpu better than a pentium 4 Dam there are just to many choices out there

Answer:Solved: CPU, FSB or Operating Freq

It is somewhat misleading. That cpu does not really have a fsb in the way you are used to thinking about fsb. It uses HT or hyper transport.

As for pci express, that is a function of the mb. It must support pci x.

That cpu will run just about anything you want. It would be approx equal to a P4 of around 3.5 gig. The amds are more efficient so they do more work per clock cycle. The p4s accomplish the same thing with an increase in clock speed [and heat]

Hi, first off sorry if this is in the wrong category...

I have an old laptop which I only use for playing music (Dell Inspiron 1150, currently running XP SP3). I was wondering which operating systems I could use with it and which would be the lightest/best performance for my requirement.

The main advantages I'm looking for is fastest boot speed and least memory demanding. As it only has a 50Gb hard drive and 1Gb of RAM.

Cpu: Intel Dual Core 2GhZ
2Gb Ram
(graphics card: Asus EN7600 GS Silent)
Disk 0: 200 Gb Sata
Disk1:Seagate 750 Gb IDE

Disk 0 is currently 1st slave
Disk 1 is 3d master
My DvdRW drive is 3d slave

My OS, Windows XP SP2 is on Disk 1, on the C: partition.

I would like to backup my OS from Disk 1 to a partition on Disk 0 (using true image 10 home). I have created a 10Gb primary partion on this Disk 0, the last 190 Gb will be used for the storage of images to restore Disk 1 in case of corruption of the OS, corruption of the NTFS file table etc.

How can I best do this? I fear that when booting, the Backup OS on Disk 0 will be automatically picked for booting. I don't want this, as I want the OS on the faster 750 GB hdd to boot.

I was thinking myself:
- place an image of the OS on disk 1 of the first primary partition disk 0

In case of failure:
1) Switch power of
2) Set jumper settings for DVD rom drive to master
3) Set jumper settings for 750 GB IDE drive thats crashed to slave
4) Make 200GB SATA drive 1st master
5) Replace 750 Gb IDE drive in the BIOS with 200 GB SATA drive
6) Exit BIOS with F10
7) BOOT MS recovery console -> create MBR on disk 0 with FIXMBR, mark as ACTIVE with DISKPART

I reloaded Windows XP Home Edition on my wifes Dell Insprion1200 to fix another problem which I'll explain that on in a moment. Now when you turn the computer on, after the welcome page you get a black screen and it asks you select the OP you want. Both are identical. How do I get rid of one of them. I thought it would copy over the other one. Also, the touch pad mouse does not work. An external mouse (usb) does work. On the right hand side of the screen at the very bottom it doesn't show an icon for the touch pad. In the control panel programs it lists the external mouse only, and I figured that's because it is plugged in. Have I lost a driver for the touchpad? How can I get it back?

I do not know how to do this. All of the system files for XP are there. Also, the drive has 4 partitions on it. 3 are primary and 1 is logical. 2 of the primary partitions have the files for XP (or at least the folder is WINDOWS).

Answer:[SOLVED] 2 operating systems.. what to do now

You need to edit the boot.ini file to remove the D: operating system from the startup list.

Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab and click the Settings button for 'Startup and Recovery'.

Click the Edit button to open boot.ini in Notepad. Copy the text and paste it into your next reply.

If you have important data stored on D:, have you made a backup?

I have an 80gb IDE Hard drive with XP PRO/sp3 installed, Which I use daily. I just installed another 500gb SATA HD and loaded WIN 7 on it. I want to get used to WIN 7 before I transfer all my files and programs to it. Can I create a boot menu to use either drive? The motherboard has a boot menu which I tried, but it would only boot in Win 7 even one option was "earlier version of windows". If I select it, it just hangs up and does nothing. I wonder if I can create a menu on a floppy disk?

Answer:[SOLVED] 2 operating systems

It appears you installed win7 to the new drive with the new drive booted via the bios as the main drive.
Otherwise you would have installed win7 as a multiboot and you would have a menu listing xp and win7.

If planning on going to Win7 this was not a mistake. Far more difficult to remove xp as the primary boot drive in a multiboot with win7 [requires a repair install of win7] whereas you just set the win7 drive as your main boot and you are done.

Your best option is just use the bios to set which drive you wish to boot for now.

Answer:[SOLVED] startup! Two operating systems!

Hi and welcome to TSF

It seems you have partitioned incorrectly, but this is just a guess as I do not know the whole situation. Lets start by checking you Logical Disk Service. I would like you to but up into your machine normally and follow these steps:
Click on Start
Then right-click My Computer
From the drop down menu select Manage
After getting Computer Management open click on Disk Management

Then I would like you to upload a screen shot of that window. Here are the steps to giving a screen shot:
First have the windows needed for the screen shot opened up by itself
Then please look on the keyboard and hit the Print Screen key, or on laptops Prnt Scrn
The go to Start -> Run -> Type in Mspaint -> Then select Ok
After opening Microsoft Paint go to Edit and click Paste
Afterwards save the file and post the screen shot onto your next post

Answer:[SOLVED] Two Operating systems at boot up

Welcome back to TSF

You need to edit the boot ini

Which one do you usually click on to boot into windows the first one or second one?

If the first one is working then delete the second entry. Try this:

Click Start/Run then type in msconfig . Click the BOOT. INI tab and then click Check All Boot Paths. It will verify all boot paths and if one is found invalid it will delete it.

If that doesnt work, Click Start/right click on My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery Settings/Edit and then just delete the entry that is no good. Reboot the computer.

Answer:Solved: Possible Virus V/s Operating System

I can sympathize that you are angry but all of the CAPS is yelling and it is also a little difficult to read.

If you are having trouble installing HijackThis try safe mode if that will not work please send any error messages you are getting. Also I would also like you to delete any HJT programs and files you have and re-download as per the next part:

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window under Internet & Networking in Security for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor ... Read more

Hey guys, first off I'm sorry if I'm posting under the wrong thread here.. Feel free to move it if need be.

I have a Dell Studio laptop, and see Dell came with something called "Dell DataSafe" installed on it. I didn't care much about it, and just left it alone, until today when it said the package was expiring tomorrow. I thought that since I never use it, I may as well delete it...it was taking up over 40gb of space anyways. So since Dell didn't have any uninstall file for the DataSafe program, I just restarted into safe mode, and used CCleaner to uninstall both the DataSafe files. Everything was working just fine, and they uninstalled just fine too.

After restarting the computer again, Grub loaded up (I have Grub installed w/ Linux and Windows Vista dual booted on it), and listed this:
GRUB loading.

I checked the BIOS and it is booting from the hard drive, not the network. I've tried calling Dell Support, but the lady didn't really know, and she said I'm going to have to send it off to the professionals to retrieve my data.. I spent the past few hours over google, and found that Dell Data Safe actually writes to the MBR. I've loaded ... Read more

I had some problems a while ago and reinstalled XP. I now have 2 hard drives with XP home installed on each of them and each one works fine, only problem is every time I have installed windows it created another operating system choice entry on the start page (the one after the bios page). I wish to keep the first entry choice as is, delete the second one and rename the third one. How do I do this?
Thanks for any help, oldaz.

I was unable to switch on my computer (a Dell desktop with Windows 7, purchased in July of 2012). I had to shut it off manually because it wouldn't shut off on its own after an automatic Windows update that required a shutdown and restart. Then, when I tried to switch it on, it kept sending me to the diagnostic tool, which didn't find anything. I spoke to Dell and found out that my operating system became corrupted. (My hard drive is okay.) Even after the system was reinstalled to the factory setting, I could no longer log in using my username and password. So Dell is sending me a flash drive that it says will solve the problem. Can somebody explain if I should have done something else? I'm not good with computers at all. And have other users had similar problems with Windows 7? When I get the flash drive, I'll post what happened.

Answer:Solved: My operating system became corrupted

Have you or can you use this>>
1. Open a command prompt (or the Start-Run line).
2. Type and enter "sfc /scannow" (without quotes but with the space).

Your files will then be scanned and repaired if necessary. It may take 10 or 20 minutes, depending on your system.

I reformatted and reinstalled XP Home. I have a smart card reader and for some reason the drive letter for the master is i with the removable drives being c,d,e and f. I don't recall it being like this the first time but I believe it is causing problems installing certain programs. Is this normal and if not how do I fix it?

I have two Sata 80 gb hard drives on my computer. For quite a while I had an operating system on one hard drive and just used the other for storage. About three months ago, I installed a free 120 day trial version of Windows XP 64 bit, wanting to give the 64 bit operating system a try. The free period is coming to an end and I am not impressed enough with the Win XP 64 to purchase it. I currently have Win XP 64 on F: drive, and Win XP 64 on the C: drive. When you have two Windows operating systems installed, Windows will give you a start-up selection, asking you which operating system you want to boot to. The first and default is F: Windows XP 64. I want to get rid of the 64 bit operating system. Once, in the past, I tried doing something similar to this, booting to the operating system I wanted to keep, and then reformatted the drive that had the operating system I wanted to get rid of. You probably already know what happened next. On the next reboot, I could not get a boot to either drive, or the installed operating system I wanted to keep. Anyone know a way to get rid of the Win 64 on one drive while maintaining a boot sector on the drive that has my Win XP? Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Jim

Hi Guys,

On my Acer laptop I enabled the Hard Drive Password in the BIOS. When I went to Re-boot it comes up with the above Problem.

I removed the HDD and connected it to another PC and it doesn't detect the drive at all. When booting on the laptop it doesn't prompt for the password I entered

any tips how I can recover it?

thanks

Answer:[SOLVED] No Operating System Found

With the HDD in the laptop, boot into the Bios. Here make sure the drive is being recognized there on the main page. Go to the HDD Password and Disable the password. Also, go to SATA or HDD Mode and change it from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility Mode.

One day few weeks back I turned on my home built comp. and It stated that there was a file missing. And this wasn't the first time I got this error. But I knew what to do, format and re-install windows. (kept a back up hard drive for all my files since this happens every 3- 4 months) But this time, when I try to install it, the setup procedure stated that there was a file that I couldn't install, actually there were several. It gave me an option to either retry or skip this file which could result in a malfunctioning os. I had no option but to skip it. And when it was done, it rebooted and a blue error screen message came up. I have re-formatted and re-installed at least 4 to 5 times, the hard drive is not the problem and neither is the disc. I have a dell laptop, and I used the os disc that came with it, the same error came up. I even changed the cd-drive from which it was reading the cd from, but no luck or results, techguy please help
