How to modify Security settings in Firefox?

Question: How to modify Security settings in Firefox?

I am running Firefox as my primary browser. I do not have Power Point installed so I have downloaded the PP reader and send downloaded messages to Desktop where I read them. Today I rec'd 3 PP messages. One of them I was able to read. The other 2 said that my security settings would not permit viewing them. How and what do I change to reduce the security settings? TIA.

Preferred Solution: How to modify Security settings in Firefox?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to modify Security settings in Firefox?

you did not say which version you are running. what i have found is for firefox 1.5. the link is below.

Security

Protocols: The options here are 'Use SSL 2.0', 'Use SSL 3.0', Use 'TLS 1.0'. I recommend that you tick all three options, as they use appropriate security protocols (SSL is Secured Sockets Layer and TLS is Transport Layer Security) to ensure secure transmission of data over the Internet. If you encounter any difficulties with a particular website, then fall back to only having SSL 2.0 and 3.0 ticked. If you still have difficulties, only tick SSL 2.0 and if difficulty persists then avoid using the site for entering sensitive data, as all sites should support SSL 2.0.

The DistributedCom error message appears in Event Viewer on ALL my personal computers only the CLSID, APPID and NT SIDs change.

I know the CLSID and APPID, how can I identify the software these numbers represent?
I know authority to launch the service for user S-1-5-18 has not been granted, who is S-1-5-18?
I wonder how to use the Component Services Admin tool to grant local launch permission, assuming launch is desirable.

Firefox 3 Follows IE7's Security Settings.

Firefox 3 users, who also have jacked up the security settings on Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 to their most paranoid level, may find it trickier to download files with Firefox due to key changes recently made by Mozilla.

Answer:Firefox 3 Follows IE7's Security Settings

Interesting. It sounds like with version 3, the Firefox developers are wanting to better integrate with the OSes on which it runs.

On Windows (XP and later, at least), Firefox 3 honors the Windows Internet Options security settings.

On Linux, Firefox 3 now uses D-Bus messages (our Network Manager on Ubuntu discussion).

I wonder what integration oriented changes were made for OS X.

Thanks for the link to the article!

I installed 1.5.03 last night. My ActiveX bug is now gone heheh. I'm a little concerned by what I see when in tools-options but hopefully I'll figure it out. The first thing I wanted to do was set-up my zones, which aren't there. I guess I'll have to read a help text or something. Anyone have a link to a fast track for Firefox security?

I'm using the newest version of Firefox and not using my IE6 at all.

The only time I'd use it would be to do Windows Update. (I have an XP-SP2 laptop.)

I thought I read it's good (or doesn't hurt) to set everything in IE to high security settings if you're not using it. (And I seem to recall there were some custom settings it was best to do...?)

So I was wondering what those settings were and what the best way to set IE security is if I'm only using Firefox...?

(I guess I'd need to change the settings each time I do Windows Update though, right? Then put them back to the high settings?)

Thanks!

I've been having problems off and on with my internet security lately. I can't download anything unless I set it lower than the default which isn't recommended by IE.

Anyway I decided to download Firefox today and I'm able to download but this one particular site won't let me upload anything because of my security settings:

I downloaded Firefox thinking it would solve this problem but it didn't. I turned off TrendMicro but nothing seems to work. At one point it would work in IE but I had to go another User Account. I don't plan on using IE so if anyone can assist me on how it can be fixed within Firefox I'd appreciate it.

Firefox is a supremely configurable browser with an array of useful settings, but many are so deeply buried in about:config that you may never even realize they exist.

ConfigFox is a free portable tool for Windows which makes it easier to view and manage Firefox?s more advanced privacy and security-related options.

The program first acts as a GUI for your settings, presenting them in a tree with the following categories: Startup, Auto Updates, Privacy, Location bar/ search/ auto suggestions/ history, Cache, SSL/ OCSP/ Certs/ Encryption/ http, Plugins, Media/ Camera/ Mic, JavaScript & DOM, Leaks/ fingerprinting/ security/ dev tools, and Tweaks.

Expanding any category gives you a list of possible options, and expanding these shows you the name of the official Firefox setting (so the program?s ?Disable browser auto update? directly relates to the Firefox setting app.update.enabled).

Every category and setting has a checkbox you can use to enable or disable it.

Most options are fairly obvious (?Disable camera?), but others do require some background knowledge (?Enable OCSP Stapling?).

If you?re unsure what something means, right-click the relevant Firefox setting, select Search Online and a web browser window opens with any matches.

Once you?re finished, the Save option saves your new settings to a Users.js file in your user profile (it won?t open an existing Users.js, so if you have one already then we?d back that up first). Restart Firefox and... Read more

Hi, I've had a Thinkpad before but now I have an Ideapad Y510P. The Trackpad seems different. The left and right mouse buttons are built into the track pad, so when I try to click them, if I drag my finger at all, the mouse moves. I believe my old Thinkpad had isolated buttons so this wasn't an issue. Is there a way to disable or lower the sensitivity of the Trackpad at the buttons so this stops being an issue?

Hi guys,

I got my 21" CRT monitor today. I love the huge screen area. But even as big as it is, I still have trouble reading the text at 1600x1200 (it's native resolution) It looks washed out and blurry. I can read the text but it's not that sharp. The monitor's color is also not good. I have adjusted the settings but I can't get the colors to be as vibrant as on my laptop (or even close) I'm not too happy about my purchase, I thought the color and sharpness would be better on a sony trinitron. Are there any programs I can use to help me modify the settings?

Here's the monitor I have:

Answer:Program that helps modify monitor settings?

Well...there's usually buttons somewhere...like on the bottom of the moniter. There's firmware in the moniter w/ a crude interface....but it will make the colors better. And for the text size, i think you can change the default in the control panel.

Greetings,

REG-PRNTSRVR1\Administrators local security group contains DOMAIN\Domain Admins as a member.

The default 'Print Server Properties' security tab has 'Administrators (REG-PRNTSRVR1\Administrators)' with full blown permissions. Under Advanced Security Settings, there are two entries for this; one of them has 'View Server' and 'Manage Server' checkmarked applying to 'This server only', and the other for 'Print', 'Manage Printers', and 'Manage Documents' applying to 'Documents and printers only'.

I am RDP'd into REG-PRNTSRVR1 as my own credentials, a member of Domain Admins security group.

Why in the world do I not have the ability to modify these default permissions or modify the settings of printer queues? Even the 'Security' tab of printer queues say 'Administrators (REG-PRNTSRVR1\Administrators)' has full blown permissions ('Special Permissions' not checkmarked though).

If I right click on on a DRIVE LETTER, the sharing and security option is not visible in the context menu. If I right click a DRIVE LETTER and select properties, then the sharing tab is not visible in the properties pane.

However, if I do either of the above with a FOLDER, the sharing options ARE available.

I have a drive that had Vista Home Premium on it & NTFS as the file system. The drive went bad with over 100 K bad sectors. Preformed a hard drive recovery; After several days I managed to remap all the bad sectors so that I could read the drive when booting from a XP boot CD or a UBCD cd.

Now When I view the drives directory structure I can browse most of what is listed except for the Documents & Settings folder. When I try that one I get the message "Access Denied". I tried getting into the properties to see if I can change the properties but the Security tab did not show up.

I am a lot more familiar with XP than Vista. Is there an added security feature Vista has on the Documents & Setting folder that only Vista can open it. I tried using a Vista Recovery disk but it was not able to see the partition. Also I am not sure if there are any tools on the disk to recover files from a drive that no longer boots windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Ok, so I recently re-installed windows (Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 bit, SP 1), had no issues with it before, Had this PC for year and a half, and today suddenly it gives me the above error when i try to download a file (Even windows updates) off of IE, It's also worth noting pictures do not show up either.
I have found a temporarly looparound by moving a Firefox copy onto this PC from my Labtop via flash drive, but its far from a fix. Still can't download anything, but I can see images and watch some youtube videos.

But theres another error as well when i try to download off of firefox:

I have tried changing my Internet Security settings, but they don't solve anything and they actually reset themselves back to the defualt (Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded) after about 5-10 minuites.

Pretty confident it's a windows issue and not a Networking issue as everyone else can connect fine, and iits also causing issues like "File is corrupt" whenever trying to open files, and is breaking both Firefox and IE, But if mods think this thread is more appropiate somewhere else, Be my guest to move it where it would get awnsered better.

Tried so far:
Reinstalling windows (Yes i moved my games/files to flash drive(s) and formatted my disk when installing)

Changing Internet Security Settings

Thanks in advance.

Help!, under "Manage Security Settins For:" in the new Security Center, there is just empty space! My LiveUpdate for my Symantec products has stopped working ever since Service Pack 2 and I feel like I might be able to fix the problem if I had some options as to changing the new Antivirus in SP2.
Please help, thanks.

Answer:Security Center: No Security Settings!

SP2 doesn't contain an AV program. Security Center checks to see if you are using a current AV program, and notifies you accordingly. Your problem is likely with the new Windows firewall; it's blocking ports your LiveUpdates needs. I have started using Firefoc as my default browser with IE6 as reserve. How can I arrnage that history retention, temporary intenet files and cookie poicy will always be the same, preferebly set by Firefox?

Answer:Linking settings in Firefox and IE

It can't be done, that's the whole point the two don't talk to each other thank goodness. The only thing you can share are the Bookmarks/Favorites and that has to be done manually. Being as Firefox is open source, in other words you can see the code that makes it tick, not so with Internet Explorer, so therefore you can't even write a script for it to be done.

Answer:Firefox settings problem

Most Firefox glitches can be cured by fully uninstalling then reinstalling.

1.First save Bookmarks - Bookmarks/Manage/File/Export

2.Uninstall from Add/Remove programs.

3.Go to Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla directory and delete the entire \Firefox subdirectory

4.Reinstall.

HI.
Can someone please help me with sorting out the settings in Firefox.
I have just started to use it over Safari, but it starting to become a pain. Everything I read doesn't seem to work.
I just want to be able to open new tabs and it open directly with the home page.
When I click the home button it takes the current page to the homepage, but adds another tab not with the homepage.
Seems pretty straightforward, but I've tried a few things and nothing works.
Cheers.

Answer:Having problems with Firefox settings

You have to tell FF that you want a new tab to open with your homepage url or some other webpage.
In the Address bar type, about:config and press Enter.
The about:config 'This might void your warranty!' or 'Here be dragrons' warning page may appear. Click 'I'll be careful, I promise!', to continue to the about:config page.
Type, browser.newtab.url in the search box.
Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and change the string value url to what you want, you can change it to about:home for the Firefox Google home page, or type in your preferred home page, for example google.com. (you don't type the www's)
Click OK and close the about:config tab
Now when you open a new tab that is the page it will display.

Hello,

thinking of reformatting my win 7 drive and doing a clean reinstall. Is there a way I can save all my firefox settings and add ons or will they still be active from on line when I download the latest FF install?

I know I have to download all the latest win 7 updates and drivers just like I did a year ago when I first installed win 7.

Thanks!

Answer:Firefox settings and Win 7 reformat?

go to the search box and type
%appdata%
and hit enter.
copy the mozilla folder to your back up
Paste it into the new installation the same way.
This is how I've been migrating my settings for several reformats now. It even keeps your passwords and form data.

If you are going to download the new version of firefox apply it to this installation first, or you could have some add on issues.

That's the easiest way.

Otherwise, in your FF browser, the 2nd search bar to the right where is says search. Move your mouse over the magnifying glass, a drop down arrow will appear. Click and then choose your search engine. Alternatively you can do the same thing in settings. Click settings, click options, search tab and then in the default engine field click the drop down arrow to choose.....

My machine crashed to a point where I have to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows.

My firefox was configured exactly the way I liked it and I'd like to have the same thing again.

I have a complete directory backup so is it possible to get all the settings and passwords onto the new installation? I exported passwords a long while ago to a file so I have some but not all. Its all the autofill stuff (does that come from google toolbar?).

Thanks guys

Answer:Solved: Firefox settings

Hi attman,

If by "complete directory backup" you mean you made a copy of your Profile folder, then it should be no problem.
Just install Firefox, with FF closed locate the new Profile, empty the *****.default folder of it's contents and replace them with a copy of the contents from the backup. Don't remove the ******.default folder itself, just the contents.
Start Firefox and everything should be the same as when you made the backup.

Lost ALL of my bookmarks (Holy shit there were alot of them).
Lost the Google search bar.
Does anyone know whats up or how I can fix it?

Answer:FireFox dropping my settings!

Woo, firefox randomness.

1st off, is Firefox using the correct profile? Open Firefox with the profile switcher (add a -p to the target line on the shortcut).

2nd, check the Firefox data directory to salvage your bookmarks. As of Firefox 1.5, Firefox will make multiple backups of your bookmarks file every day.

Since I've answered the question last week and I don't feel like restating, check out this link.

Me and a small team are currently updating all our companies android tablets with the latest firefox build. We then have to remote on to each tablet and install an xpi file, change two settings in about:config and enable pluglings.

Is there anyway we can reduce this process by some kind of sync method , We have tried sync in firefox but that does not seem to work. We have a little over 1000 tablets to update so it is quite tedious to keep on doing this. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Ok, it's not the first time I had this problem, but I don't remember how I solved this the first time. Basically, all my bookmarks are gone, and whenever I like put new buttons on the toolbar or make any changes to Firefox, when I start it back up nothing has saved.

Also, the window is always half-size when it starts up. Where it should say Google search, the Google sign is missing. Could anyone help me please? I have Firefox 1.5.0.4.

Answer:Firefox refuses to save settings...

See if this works:

* Click on Firefox's 'Safe Mode' shortcut (located in the 'Start' menu) to start Firefox.
* In the dialogue box that appears, tick the box that says: 'Reset tolbars and controls'
* Click the 'Make Changes and Restart' button.

You will have to set up toolbar preferences again but hopefully, they will stick this time.

To find your bookmarks:

* Do a Windows search for a file called 'Bookmaks.html'.
* If found, open it and see if it contains your bookmarks.
* If it does, make a backup of it and store it somewhere safe.*
* Put a copy of Bookmarks.html into into the correct location in the Profiles folder. Let it overwrite the existing one.

If the above doesn't sort out the problems, there other things that can be tried or looked for. However, it does sound a bit as though you could have other Profile related problems. If these steps don't work, it might be less complicated and quicker (or even necessary) to just to create a new Profile.

I have Firefox on my work laptop(Win XP Pro) and I set up CYGWIN on my home PC(Win XP Home) to establish an SSH tunnel.
I had set up the Manual proxy setting on Firefox to use my proxy settings for a socks host on "localhost:8080"
I was also told to put in t e No Proxy for "localhost, 127.0.0.1"

I am able to intiate the Putty session and log into that client.
When I launch Firefox it is telling me:
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

Does anyone have any experience with such a setup?

In a completely unrelated issue:
I also set up a RealVNC on my home PC. Others are able to connect to my Home PC, but when I try to connect from my work I get Connection Refused. I was hoping to use this to help troubleshoot my issues with the CYGWIN.

I am wondering if the network guys at my work are onto me, and are trying to shut me down

Has anyone else had such a problem I can't believe it was just me.    I had for years been adding lists of sites to block that slow down my computer and now all that information has been wiped out and my account set to accept all cookies and got rid of my notice I did not want to be tracked.

I believe it is directly related to what happened when I tried to log in to Firefox early one morning this week, wasn't quite awake and so can't remember all the details.'

But I was immediately taken to a site that was some kind of campaign warning about our impending loss of internet access because of government restrictions.

I didn't do anything but close it out but was taken right back to that same site two more times and now all my years of work accumulating these sites to be blocked are wiped out and I am really ticked off.   I've got tons of cookies showing up way more than normal.

This doesn't make Firefox look good, which is one reason why I do not think Firefox had anything to do with it because I'm not happy with the deletion of all those site blocks I had set up so it does not make Firefox look good.

But what amazes me is I haven't heard about this happening to anyone else and for a Browser with the long history and reputation of Firefox to be implicated and not hearing about this happening to anyone else.

I'm still in the process of setting all this right again but I guess I'm puzzled not to have heard anymore ... Read more

Sadly, it seems I'm close to having to do a complete reformat/system recovery. I have just about everything backed up on externals anyway, so it's not the end of the world. My major concern is my firefox settings/bookmarks. Is there a settings file or files that I can back up, and then, when I re-install firefox on the fresh OS, copy those files to the "new" OS so it automatically knows all my settings and bookmarks?

Thanks for reading,

Zoloft

Answer:backing up Firefox settings/bookmarks

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

Shows how to backup Mozilla stuff, either manually or with programs.

If all you want is bookmarks then use Library and export to either json file or html file. Then import/restore later.

I never bothered with total backup, only bookmarks and extensions. Get a list of them by using Extension List Dumper If you have customized userchrome.css, usercontent.css and user.js they should be backed up too. Rest is just what comes, cookies, history, saving passwords etc. If you have done loads of about:config "settings" then you should have put them in a user.js file - changing stuff in about:config saves them in prefs.js, like registry for Firefox. Cant really back that up without keeping all the rest. User.js is your own changes and only that.

So they've completely disappeared from your mozilla firefox folder? (under application data in your user profile in documents and settings).

If so, that sucks. This seems to be random behavior in FF; I have no clue why it happens.

Your profile are stored somewhere under your own local settings folder, just syn the contents there.

Or a better way is use Portable Firefox. Totally stand alone and with it on your D: never having to worry about profile getting wipped by reformats.

This is not my week with technology. This is the third or fourth thread I've started this week.

This problem is minor and probably has an elegantly simple solution.

In Mozilla Firefox 20.0.1 in Tools, Options, Privacy: I keep setting Location Bar - "When using the location bar, suggest:". I set it to 'Nothing' but Firefox changes it to 'History and Bookmarks'.

I'm going to refer you to the Mozilla Support Site. At the top of the page there are dropdown boxes where you can select your OS and Firefox version.

I'm running the same version of Firefox on my XP Pro computer and just to see if I would have the same issue you're having, I chose your location bar settings, clicked OK and brought the Options dialogue box back up. The setting stayed even after restarting Firefox.

The solution may be elegantly simple OR there may be some other issue.

Out of curiosity, where are the settings for IE7/Firefox stored physically? Is there any easy way to change settings without going into the program itself and manually changing them from the options?

I use a VPN, and need to change the internet connection settings frequently. If I could write some sort of script to automatically change these settings it would be neat, and save me about 10 seconds of grief.

Like everybody else in the world, I somehow managed to get the nfra.exe virus that hijacks your search engines and redirects your browser. MalwareBytes found and deleted it, my internet didn't work at all (IE8 or Firefox) so I did a SystemRestore from a week or so ago. My IE works but Firefox still has the hijacked proxy settings on it. Here's my ComboFix log

Thanks in advance!

As a result of this, the list of sites that were never allowed to use cookies has been cleared. Is there a way to retrieve the list?

Answer:I accidentally reset Firefox's settings

Like the title says, a couple days ago the wife's laptop began having issues connecting to the internet. Everytime firefox is opened the proxy settings have been set back to "connect through a proxy server". Here is a HJT log if it helps.

I always have browsers set to check for updates(manually) but let me decide to download/install etc..

I can't remember Firefox honoring this setting recently. Since 27.0 was just released I manually checked for updates. It did not say "new ersion available what do you want to do?" Nope. It said "Downloading..." so I killed it. Net time I ran it I get "restart to install" so I have to do it or the program will be corrupted.

I wonder what would happen if I left it on automatic? I'd probably find out I made a down payment on some Florida sink hole.

Answer:Firefox 26 ignores update settings

Thanks for that Miles, I hadn't realized Version 27 was out.

I am the same about setting how any program updates. Although for browsers I typically leave the auto setting alone. If I change it, I'll be stuck with an outdated version.
