Unknown file writing to disk

Question: Unknown file writing to disk

I am having a problem with norton utilities, shutdown, and other utilities. I am getting the message that an unknown program is writing to the disk. I have run ad aware, spybot and antivirus program but cannot isolate the program. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my zone alarm.

there is a utility out there that identifies running programs. can anyone help me find it?

Preferred Solution: Unknown file writing to disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

I have a weird problem trying to copy files onto a DVD-RAM disk (formated with FAT32)with Windows Explorer... for which I couldn't find any solution, not even a report, with google or in the MS knowledgebase etc.

It goes this:
depending on the file size, when I copy files from my hard disk onto the DVD-RAM disk I get ...

a) for files < ~ 200 kB: Windows Explorer shows the usuall small window with the green progress bar, which closes upon apparent completion of the process. Explorer now shows the files on my DVD-RAM disk as expected. I can even open and modify them now on the DVD-RAM disk.
BUT... when I remove and reinsert the DVD-RAM disk again, the files are not there any more!!! Moreover, sometimes I hear my DVD drive is not even spinning when Explorer tells me its is copying the files!

b) for files > ~ 200kB: Windows Explorer refuses to copy the files with the error message "Cannot read from the source file or disk".

Before you ask...
Yes, I have administrator rights and full control of the files .

No, the files are not in use by any other program.

Yes, problem persists whatever file from whatever location on my hard disk to whatever location on the DVD-RAM I try to copy.

Yes, I can read/delete files from the DVD-RAM disk, and even manually create new folders / files and rename/modify them!

Yes, the very same files Windows Explorer refuses to copy onto my DVD-RAM / FAT32 disk I can successfully copy on a RW-CD with UDF format.

hey ,
fixboot is not writing the boot sector properly from the windows xp recovery disk. it claims to but everytime i restart it says its missing the ntldr file right after POST.
chkdsk claims one or more unrecoverable problems.
any idea on what might securely replace that file?

system :
motherboard : gigabyte ga-m55sli s4
cpu: amd athlon 2.6ghz soc 755
hdd: WD 320gb
OS: xp sp3

Answer:Missing ntldr file from boot sector, fixboot not writing properly from recovery disk

You could copy the file over manually using the recovering console, a Linux Live CD or an XP PE CD. Sounds like there may be an issue with the hard drive that should be addressed first.

If there is something wrong with the HD, you need to copy the important data off before it gets any worse.

Hi peeps and thanks in advance for any help you can give me! My laptop is doing my head in thanks to its new-found ability to chew up free disk space on my C:/ drive. Not sure if this problem has been on-going for a few weeks or something, but it's come to a head now!! A few bits of info that might be handy: Vista Home Premium 32bit, laptop is about three years old, 160GB HDD partitioned into a C: and a D: (both with approx 70GB total space according to Properties).
The story goes like this:

1) Got low disk space warning pop up (something like 300MB left!) - thought that this was entirely plausible since my wife keeps taking videos of our little baby on her camera and saving them on the lappy!
2) Decided to move some User folders from the C: to the D: and in the process moved about 5GB which then freed up several gig of space on the C: drive. Then I noticed that this was consistently dropping and the HDD light was flickering all the time, even when the laptop was not in use.
3) Updated and ran all the following programs: AVG 2011 Free, CCleaner, CWShredder, Malwarbytes - and nothing untoward reported.
4) Booted into safe mode and ran the programs again and still nothing reported.
5) Accessed VSS records via a command prompt and this was set to UNBOUNDED maximum capacity and showing as 16GB in use on disk, so revised this down to 12GB (a cautious approach, I admit!) and freed up a bit more space but this again is slowly being reduced.
6) Ran WinDirStat and this is showing ... Read more

Hi my names wer34576. my computer takes roughly 20 minutes to start up and run programs. This began (I believe) after I managed to install a virus which I have removed(I think  ) but when I check in the task manager the disk is at 100% usage with only a few( 3-4 MB/s) going on. this does not only happen on starting up this happens randomly and causes my computer to freeze. i have run in safe mode and the problem doesn't occur. I also tried a clean boot but the problem still occurred. I am currently using McAfee and a full scan revealed nothing. i have also used c cleaner to clean up temporary files and clean the registrys. both haven't had an effect. I have also used ESET online after having looked at another users topic and how the moderator solved their problem (much different to mine i think as theirs was the result of overheating) and have removed the treats  found in that. i would greatly appreciate help as this is getting rather annoying.
i will attempt to attach some images of the task manager and please ask if you need any other information and i will be happy to post it.
aswell as the images attached(if i can attach them) the disk in performance tab will show roughly the whole square with no read/write occurring.
if someone could also redirect me to how to add attachments that would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

Ghost Shot>

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

I have created many BartPE boot disks over the years but have now encountered a problem that I do not understand.

The error message that I receive when using CD Burner PRO is as follows:

"Writing Error (3) Error occurred writing data to disk.

Unknown error-use extended data for more information (1051).

Error Sense Data SENSE KEY:5 ASC: 21 ASCQ 2"

I also get errors with DeepBurner and Roxio Easy CD Creator and they will not create a disk with this ISO image. It was created with no errors so I do not see how this particuliar ISO image could be causing the problem but maybe there is something about it that I do not understand.

I was able to create a couple of disks earlier in the day.

This file stops at 66% complete. I recreated the ISO file and it too stops at 66% complete.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Does anyone understand what this message is saying?

I've been backing up all my DVD movies recently with Clone DVD but whenever I write the image to th disc, the last little bits of the movie skip and the sound doesn't sync up with the picture. I have decided to use NERO 7 Ultra edition to write the image to the disc. Whenever I choose the optin "burn image to disc", it always makes the image a file on the disc as opposed to a movie that will work in my DVD player...

Any way to make this work properly?

Answer:Laptop is writing to disk too often

You have to look at what runs in the background. It could be antivirus running, or antispyware or even a defragging program if you use one, so we would need to know what is running in the background to best answer that.

Under " System Tasks", clicking "Eject the disk" does NOT cause the Cd-Rom Disk drive to open and eject the disk previously written to.

Manually pushing the Eject button does NOT eject disk.

Using Restart, and pressing Button DOES eject disk.

Info: Disk drive is LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163, (std CD-Rom ), "enabled and "working properly" according the Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.
Windows XP Pro SP3 installed all MS updates installed. CD was written to by "copying files from one drive to the CD drive, closing the drive via [X]. Problem occurs repeatedly. CDs are readable after.

Short of re-installing Windows XP Pro, what corrective action is suggested. ????

Answer:Cant Eject Disk after writing

Check to see if you have the latest firmware for the CD device from Lite-On's website first. If that doesn't fix it, then just have a paperclip ready for the manual opening of the drive. You can find a new drive for very cheap if its a mechanical issue. If you physically press the eject button down and it doesn't open, it sounds like its a hardware problem.

Is there a program that will tell me what processes are writing to the hard disk? I have a program that does a good job of monitoring CPU, memory, network traffic, and disk read/write activity. Using task manager and a firewall, I can easily find which processes are using the CPU, memory, and network. But I cannot tell which is writing to the disk (at least not easily). Is it more complex than that? Like maybe the processes go to the ram and the ram writes it to the disk? If you can give me some advise on this it will really help me manage my system resources better.

Alienware 17 running Windows 10 Home. Works fine, but the thing is CONSTANTLY writing to the disk. I know this is way too imprecise to give me a definitive answer, but I fired up the resource monitor and the "system NT Kernel and System" process writes to dozens of files constantly...

It's been on for over 4 hours and it's STILL writing constantly. Almost no reading...

I have NOTHING running other than the stuff that starts with Windows, and VERY little of that since the Startup section of the task manager has pretty much every disabled. I even turned OFF wi-fi so it COULDN'T do anything stupid over the metered connection and it STILL sat there writing constantly

I can't imagine that this is normal and I"m wondering how to figure out what to do next. Ideas?

Crashes caused by BitDefender. I would recommend removing that software ASAP. Here was my experience with them: BitDefender Forum > False Positive; Optional Windows Updates

How to uninstall BitDefender
Make sure to install security software after removing BitDefender. I recommend either of these: coupled with Malwarebytes. Do not start the free trial of Malwarebytes. Just use the standalone version, update it, and scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Good and Free system security combination.

After installing your security software, update it, and then run full scans today with each program. Report back the results of the scans.

Today I noticed my hard drive is non-stop being written to, it is so bad I constantly hear it clicking and I am afraid at this rate it might burn itself out in a matter of days.
Usually it is the system process that is writing copious amounts of data, but I cannot pinpoint the reason behind it. I have no antivirus software and indexing service is turned off.
Here is a screenshot of Resource Monitor:

Closing Google Chrome did nothing to improve the HDD hogging.

Granted, this problem could be the disk itself, but I'm wondering if it could possibly be a virus. I got a new monitor, printer and, keyboard/mouse. I hooked everything up and popped in the installation cd for the printer. It sayed I needed shockwave player 8.5 to view the contents (a little odd for an installation cd needing this, but no big deal). The dialog box says to click ok to install it. I did and nothing happened. I then went to adobe's website and attempted downloading the latest version of shockwave. Using Netscape and Firefox I would start the install process but nothing would happen. In Internet Explorer I would tell it to install and after about 15 seconds a dialog message would come up saying Shockwave Error 2 and would have a message saying there was a problem writing to disk and to make sure the disk is writeable and there's at least 5mb of space. I restarted my computer and tried again. Same thing. I tried uninstalling programs (just to see if that was another problem) and none of my programs will uninstall. I believe I tried downloading a program also, and that too wouldn't install. I ran antivirus and antispyware and there was nothing. I then tried to restore my computer and it won't let me. I choose the restore point I want to use, click next to go to the next menu with all the b.s. explaining what it's going to do, click next again and nothing happens.

Whenever I tried to copy a folder I would get a message saying "Confirm Stream Loss" - The file 'Thumbs' has information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway? I kept saying yes and the box kept flashing up so I had to click the button that said "Yes to all". It still copied files but it doesn;t seem right. Every folder seemed to have this "Thumb" file. Any ideas. I tried copying all the photos to a new disc and it was happening then aswell. I then got an error aying it thought the disc had a problem and they could not copy files. Is it the discs? They are TDK d-view CD-Recordable 700MB. Have heard that some discs are more reliable than others.ThanksDinks

I have made my pictures into a "Windows Movie Maker" Movie and I am trying to put it onto disk so I can take it to my sister's and show it on her TV via her DVD Player(she doesn't own a computer). Every time I try it says "Writable CD not detected" I have tried on both my CD Drives with various types of disk but nothing works. Windows "Help" says I must have a Highmat disk, but no one seems to know what this is. I am in the UK using XP SP3 and Movie Maker V5.1.

Answer:Writing Movie Maker to Disk

You might be able to make a certain kind of CD, called a VCD or SuperVCD that will play on a DVD player but the most compatible is going to be a DVD of course. Have you tried taking the movie file you get from WMM and turning it into a playable DVD with something like DVDFlick? (

I was in the process of updating several sata controllers and chipset drivers. I also installed a new USB 3.0 hub and was in the process of moving around several devices between ports. I had a problem with my keyboard which uses USB 2.0 as a connector but I would recieve a "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)" code 43 on every port on the USB 3.0 Hub. I finally gave up and put the keyboard back into the 2.0 ports on my motherboard. When I finally fixed everything. I realized my DVD drive was not working. I had to reconnect the SATA cables because it got disconnected while I was moving my PC around. Upon the last restart of my PC.

I checked Disk Managment and noticed lots of system reserved partitions and drives which were not there before. I have no idea what happened but I think updating several drivers and the combination of reinstalling USB ports via device manager or the optical drive being reconnected may have messed up how windows used to have system reserves as partitions. I only had one visible system reserved drive before, now I have 2 visible and lettered system reserved drives.

I also have a unknown partition at the top of the list, I cannot right click that partition and select any options. The only option in my context menu is Help which brings me a link to Overview of Disk Management

I also had my video quick access as my DVD optical drive when I restarted. I have fixed this issue by changing my quick access links back to their proper folders... Read more

Answer:Unknown Partition - Unknown File System - Cannot edit or remove!

Hello taqiyya6 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Your problem is actually quite basic. You are going into the Disk Managetool and seeing system reserved partitions mounted and assigned drive letters where they shouldn't be seeing any! The 450mb partition is there to allow changing from the MBR type primary to the GPT type usually seen with server set up or large volumes exceeding 2tb in size such as installing and partitioning a new 2.5tb, 3tb, 4tb, or even one of the latest 5tb drives.

The sight of the System Reserved partition being present on the second Disk 1 500gb drive simply shows that had previously seen a Windows installation on it at some time likely before adding in the large 1tb Disk 0 drive you have the present install on. The most likely to succeed option for taking care of the smaller 500gb if nothing is on it would be a complete wipe and a fresh single partition intended for storage and backup. That would eliminate the first SR but not small second unless using an open source type partiioning utility like GParted while still an option to close up the small gap since it is only a 500gb and not exceeding the 2tb mark.

For cleaning the mess overall however going into the Device Manager and knocking out drivers before a full restart would allow Windows to redetect the drives fresh without seeing the System Reserved and MBR parts mounted again at least on the OS drive being the main concern since the SR part has to remain invisible as a system protected space not mount... Hello Everybody,

I have a WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR R3 1TB WD1002FBYS connected to my ASROCK X58 Extreme PC MoBo.
The problem is that when I try to copy a large file, for example a 4 GB file from one directory to another on the same HD, the first GB is copyed at 40 MB/s speed, then it gets slower and slower and achieves a ridiculous 2-3 MB/s. It takes more than two hours to finish a 5 GB file copy-paste operation on the same HD.

It is connected in DMA mode, so I suppose it is not the usual PIO connection problem. On italian websites nobody was able to help me.

Is there something to do with it or it may be simply defective?

I was wondering what the trick is to successfully writing to a CDRW disk. I cant for the life of me get it to work right. I'm using nero and also tried formatting a cdrw with INCD(latest version) and it always turns up some kind of error. I'm beginning to think that they just want you to think its possible to write to cdrw, but actually it isnt, lol. Anyway, if anyone knows the trick to getting this to work, let me know. Thanx

P.S. These are brand new cdrw disks I'm using also, so I dont think its the disk.

I have an older computer (Athlon 2300+) running Win XP SP2 and have two hard drives installed. All of a sudden I've run into a problem where if reading/writing to the second drive, my CPU usage goes to 100% until the reading/writing is finished. I haven't changed anything hardware-wise, and it seems to have just happened out of the blue. Hard drive processes on the drive also take an extremely long time, although nothing seems to be wrong other than that.

I tried to defrag the drive (which was about 50% fragmented) , but it took about 10 minutes and only went 1%, so I stopped it.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? Is the drive failing?

Answer:CPU usage at 100% when reading/writing to second hard disk

Might be a problem with the drive. It is very possible that you get a message near to the clock that reads something like "Data write delayed" or "data write failure" when trying to save something on the drive.
2 options:
Either the drive is failing to write on the disk
The drive controller might be having a problem.

If the disk is an IDE one, then most likely is the drive.
If the disk is an SATA one, it might be the controller, wether it is included on the mother board or using a separate one.

Another thing is if you are overclocking your system, the SATA hardware does not works fine from time to time with different system speeds other than the defaults.

Try using a different port to connect the drive (IDE or SATA, most modern mother boards have several SATA ports), different cable (to avoid any broken cable problem) and, if able, re-install the drive controller (IDE or SATA).

Hope it helps !

While dealing with another hard drive Problem, ive noticed in Ressource Monitor, that the process 'System' is constantly writing to my main drive. Sometimes its about 100-200 KiB/sec, today ive watched it for a while, and its writing action was 1.5 MiB/sec for quite a while! Later on it was about 300-400 KiB/sec. Why does this process write so much data to my disk? Considering Windows running times, this adds up to multiple times the size of my hard drive. Anyone knows whats going on here?

Recently I tried to burn an .iso with my disk drive and a DVD rw with a third party program (Astroburn). It would always begin burning, and say "operation failed" after 20 seconds or so. Each read/write speed would fail, as well. I tried to use the windows disk burner, but that did not solve the problem. The error I got was that the disk had read-write speeds incompatible with my drive.

However, I know that is impossible, because when I first got my laptop, I used the 5 disks from the exact same package to create my system recovery disks. I was also able to (around 6 months to 1 year go) create a Fedora boot disk a while back; again, with the same disks.

Other notes: I have no idea if I can write to other disks, because I don't have any other brands of DVDr's lying around in my house. I can definitely read any disk - I can read the exact same disk, but I can't write to those disks. I suspect the information I am giving about my hardware is incomplete, but I am unsure as to what I need to say about it. Please tell me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I am using "Slimtype BD E DS4E1S"

FINAL EDIT: I took it back to my manufacturer (ASUS) and they switched out the drive for another. Turns out it was just faulty. Thanks for helping.

Answer:Laptop Disk Drive Not Writing disks

Anyone have any ideas of what is wrong? If it is hardware, I could replace it, although I do believe that my warranty might be invalid. I can't seem to find this problem using google; I found a lot of related issues with my same model, but no one seems to be having my issue. In addition, I downloaded and ran the Microsoft auto-fix for disk drives - reading/writing disk players as well as dvd/blue ray disk drives. Neither detected any sort of problem with my disk drive.

In addition, a disk I could not burn worked perfectly fine on another computer. I'm completely sure it is my computer and not the disk.

i have written a boot loader and a seperate installer to write it to the first sector of the hard disk. this is dos based and works fine when run in native dos. however, seeing as times have changed and windows xp is the latest and greatest (allegedly) i have decided it's time to re-write the installer for windows. all i need to do is write my 512 byte binary bootloader file directly to the first sector of the disk. simple

the problem is, windows xp doesn't like direct writes to the disk. does anyone know how to get around this? according to the microsoft site direct writes are allowed (as long as you are a system admin), you simply create a handle using createfile () and then read/write with readfile () and writefile () but i have had no success just yet. i take it this is a security problem as the same code works fine on floppy disks.

if i could find a decent windows reference, i'm sure i could figure it out in a few minutes, but microsoft seem to like hiding information which tells you how their software works.

any help is appreciated

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

I just purchased a Y50-70 with a 256 Gb SSD.  After taking it out of the box and slowly adding some applications that I need, I noticed that applications would periodically hang ("not responding") and nothing would happen when mouse clicking, etc.   The hang would last about a minute or so then operation would be normal until the next hang. I brought up the task manager and left the performance monitor up, showing the disk activity.  I noted that during a hang, the SSD activity increased to 100%, but the read/write was 0.   I used a disk monitor utility and it seemed to indicate that there was no I/O happening during these hangs.  The disk thought it was working flat out at 100% but it wasn't reading or writing anything. I thought the issue may be one of the applications I installed, but even with no applications running, the hanging still occurred (perhaps less frequently, though).  I thought then it may be the SDD itself, so I ran chkdsk (no issues) and also did a SMART analysis revealing no issues. My next step was to reset the unit to factory settings, then reboot without adding any of my own applications at all.  The hanging still occurs. I am not sure if this means anything, but along the way, I plugged in an external HDD and listened to music off it for a long while, but noticed no issues with activity/reading/writing on that HDD. I have no more ideas on further troubleshooting, other than replacing ... I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on my computer and it has worked fine for the last 3 months or so. However, for the last 3 or 4 days though the system won't stop accessing the hard drive. It is so bad that every minute or two the computer will freeze for half a second or so (especially noticeable if I am playing music or watching a DVD). This happens whether I am running a bunch of programs or nothing at all. CPU and memory usage appears to be normal. If I open the Resource Monitor the System appears to be reading on average 6 - 8 mln b/sec and writing about 5 - 7 mln b/sec for a total of about 12 - 15 mln b/sec. I thought I managed to get rid of the annoying "excessive disk writing" problem by turning off superfetch and readyboost in services.msc.

However now it seems like it is back. I've tried turning off ALL my services (background apps), but it's still there. IMMENSELY annoying.

When I look at my resource monitor (access it via the task manager), it looks like there is some sort of Vista service still running that is causing all this trouble. See the applied image for resource monitor screen capture.

sorry for the large image. I'll scale it better the next time.

Anyway: thanks for any input!!

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could possibly walk me through or simply tell me how I would go about storing information from a simple console based C++ program into a file on my folder?

Basically I want to be able to type, for example... a persons name when prompted and have it create and save the file to somewhere on the computer, then remember where it saved it so later on I can open run my program again and it will still have the name I earlier put in.

Hi: I have a batch file that goes out and does an xcopy/compare so that only the changed files/folders are copied from a network share to my external HDD backup (E:\). These are not encrypted nor does the boss want them to be so we are not using the backup software that came with the drive. Now I have a need for restores of daily data so I created 5 folders on the E:\ (MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY) all data in them is the same from an certain date I ran the bat file. Now I want to design a single batch file the will ask file/folder to xcopy to name (MONDAY, TUESDAY, etc) and then do the xcopy/compare to that. Is this possible. Or better yet, for it to look at the day of the week on the PC and automatically run for that weekday, I know this will involve some writing to convert dates to simple MONDAY or TUESDAY etc. Thanks so much.

Question: Writing Batch File

Hello Everyone,        I am currently just learning how to write batch files. I currently am working on a Windows XP machine, w/SP2 and a Pentium R dual Processor. I would like to write a batch file For Word Excel and Powerpoint that changes the default save location of My Documents to a folder on the root of C: called "Office Documents".  I'd like it to be in the registry settings. I know that it has to be done in notepad but where do I start??? HELP!!

Answer:Writing Batch File

If this is for just one computer, I would go to the options for the word, excel, etc and specify the default save location. Batches are intended for repetitious uses like a fleet of 60 laptops that you want all the same etc. On a single system it can be done in batch but far easier to just use the GUI drop down interface in  MS Office Apps to specify the default save location as where you want it to be. Such as in Office 2000 Word has this feature in Tools --> Options --> File Locations --> select documents highlighted --> select modify--> then specify the path such as C:\OfficeDocumentsand Excel 2000 has it in Tools-->Options-->General--> put path of C:\OfficeDocuments in the Default file location field.and Powerpoint 2000 has it in Tools-->Options-->Save--> then place C:\OfficeDocuments in the default file location field and select OK.This all could be handled through a batch, but WARNING it will write to your registry and if it malfunctions it could crash windows. Using the built in user interface to specify for this single computer need would be far safer for anyone new to batch. Before learning how to edit registry keys with a batch, I would first gain a grasp of batch programming...start with the basics of the ECHO OFF and ECHO ON and @echo. Hello World and start playing with setting variables and passing values and writing to files and manipluating data through statements that test for conditions and if this do that etc. Then once y... Hi All
Can anyone help me get a simple batch file to work please?
I'm trying to write a file that will be integrated with Windows Scheduler to auto reconnect my VPN when the PC
comes out of sleep mode. For some reason, Windows always disconnects the VPN when entering sleep/hibernate.
Have done a lot of "Googling" on this and found the following . .
--Here is the suggested batch file script--
rasdial.exe yourvpnconnectioname username password
I've written this but cannot get it to work. The Command Window flashes up, but nothing happens. It seems straightfoward - but not for me!
If anyone knows a better way of getting the VPN to auto reconnect after coming out of sleep I would be grateful. It would also be beneficial
if it auto reconnects at boot time to save having to log in separately.

Try the attached .REG file.

Unzip it and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply the .REG file.

Reboot the computer.

If it only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I have Windows XP Home.
I began trying out a couple of dual-pane file managers (2xExplorer and PowerDesk) to see if I like them better than Windows Explorer.
The best I can do with respect to writing to a CD is to copy file(s) to the "CD Burning" folder (staging area).
I still have to use Windows Explorer to start up the CD Writing Wizard.
These programs do offer a Command Prompt feature.
This made me wonder if there might be some command that I could use to write files from the staging area to the CD, without going through Windows Explorer.
Does anyone know of a command like this?

I use COMPUPIC imaging software which allows me to create a slide show where I can change the order of the individual JPEG files in a directory. I can then copy these files into a new directory from within COMPUPIC and it retains the new ordering, not the original alphabetic ordering. So far everything is great. However when I then try to copy these files to a CD they are reordered alphabeticaly. I'm using Windows XP and Roxia CD Creator 5 Basic. This is a problem since I would like to use the reordered file on my CD player to create a slide show in the order I specified in my Compupic imaging software.

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to get my tablet/laptop ready for classes and have run into an issue. The harddrive was showing approx. 2.4gb of space left so I wanted to remove anything unnecessary. I ran ccleaner without issue but that did not seem to make much of a dent. I then ran disk cleanup which got stuck on the windows updates section and left my hdd with 782mb of free space now. I don't know what to do without making it worse at this point.

Good Day. I would like to move my Program Files to another HD partition, therefore I would need to write a REG file which would modify every C:\ Program Files in the registry to D:\Program Files. (There are far too many entries to do this manually!) What's the syntax for this? (Win XP) Thanks in advance!

Answer:Writing a REG file to change all values

The first thing I would do is forget the whole idea, you are heading for disaster. My Programmes is a special folder and as such cannot be moved. Some can, but this is one that cannot. There is undoubtedly a lot of stuff in my programmes the needn't be there and can be moved to another folder. However there will also be a lot of stuff that needs to be there and moving the folder will cause Windows to fail.Stuart

I have a problem when saving files in Windows 7. say I have a png with the name "alduin & khajiit 1.png" and I highlight it to grab the file name but I change the "1" to a "2" for a file name "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" in the file name field, Windows 7 still asks if I want to overwrite it despite the different file name. if I say yes it overwrites the file despite the different file name but still has "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" as a file name and "alduin & khajiit 1.png" is gone (overwritten). how do I fix this?

Answer:Windows 7 is over-writing files that have a different file name

Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out an easy way to write a PAC file, but only have it apply to users' web browsers and nothing else.

Here's my PAC file as it is right now:

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
if (dnsDomainIs(host,".<localdomain>")) return "DIRECT";
if (isInNet(myIpAddress(),"<local subnet range 1>"))
return "PROXY <proxy IP>";
if (isInNet(myIpAddress(),"<local subnet range 2"))
return "PROXY <proxy IP>";
return "DIRECT";
After implementing this file, I've found that in addition to sending websites through the proxy, it also does the same for any web content posted in emails. This would be very annoying for my users because they have to type in their LDAP credentials each time they close and open a web browser.

So basically what I'm asking is if there's any way to make a PAC file not apply to Outlook?

Answer:Error Opening File for Writing

Welcome to Seven Forums Miss Peach. In my reading this appears to be a common problem with Kaspersky. The easiest fix I see people having success with is to temporally disable UAC, and make sure Windows Defender is disabled (some also say to disable firewall while installing). See if this helps you.

I finally got Win 7 and while I was trying to network 2 computers together, I ran across a program on the AT&T website called 'AT&T Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool' for finding problems with your network. I downloaded and installed it but right when it said Program Launching, an error message pops up saying "Error writing to temporary file. Make sure your temp folder is valid." I don't know what to do with this. I tried a few different things, putting the actual downloaded file (the one you can run or save) and saving it to username/appdata/local/temp and installing it from there. I thought about the permissions that I had changed (like an idiot) because I can't stand being locked out of anything, but then I read on quite a few sites that changing permissions doesn't fix it. So I left well enough alone. Maybe I should go back and change them back. But what concerns me is that on most sites that had something on this, the programs that was being installed (unsuccessfully) when this exact message popped up for them was a completely different program. They were all different programs. Someone was installing Roxio, someone else a youtube downloading program, someone else was trying to install Mozilla and got the same error message.
What's up with that? Is this going to be a common problem that 7 is going to have? The same error code pops up in both vista and xp too.

I recently purchased an SSD for my computer, an ADATA 120GB S511. The SSD had been previously used and apparently was in working condition. I installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on my SSD to use it as a boot drive, rather than my standard HDD which I formatted as NTFS. Since then, I have been experiencing troubles while writing to files.

I try and save a file on my HDD (not the SSD) and a lot of the time it works. In some occasions, however, the following events take place:I attempt to save a file
The cursor is replaced with the pending symbol (spinning circle)
Any programs open cease to function
I cannot open directories or files, and icons go blank
The entire computer freezes up
A blue screen flashes for a split second and disappears (I do not get the chance to read any information).
The computer restarts to show a flashing underscore.
I restart the computer which returns back to normal.

I have looked through the event log and do not see any critical record aside from Kernel-Power which I believe regards the sudden crash but has no information about it.
I researched for anybody having the same problem online, but the ambiguity of this meant that I found few search results. One of the results said to run the chkdsk command in an elevated command prompt to make it run at boot-time. I did so and the problem still occurred. I also ran the "sfc /scannow" command in an elevated command prompt, but the problem still occurred.

I am now stuck for ideas on how to fix th... Read more

I have had success in the past using a .bat file to create a desktop shortcut.

I was infected a week ago with a virus or malware of some sort and cleaned it, No virures or malware on my system as of right now.

Here is an example of how I wrote my desktop shortcut .bat files:

@echo off

start iexplore.exe "" (as an example)
This is the syntax I always have used and it worked.

When I click on the shortcut I get an error message that reads: Windows cannot find 'iexplore.exe'. Make sure you typed etc. etc.

My system is working fine. IE 9 is working faster than ever and have no problems with Internet Explorer.

I checked Internet Explorer in my Program files and it indeed lists iexplore.exe in the folder.

Again, my system is clean of any virurs, malmare, rootkits and all PUP's.

Any help on why Windows cannot find iexplore.exe?

My level of experience is intermediate.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Writing Desktop Shortcut Using .bat file

Hello bear, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Close, but the command just needs to have the full path to iexplorer.exe included.

@echo off

start "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Option Three in the tutorial below can give you some more ideas about this. Especially if you would like to create a normal shortcut instead of a .bat file.

Im not quite sure if this is possible , but heres what im trying to do. I made a special batch file for a game that I have because when I try to run it with a few programs running it gives me problems. The game is KOTOR and the programs that are giving me trouble are YzDock and the AVG resident sheild.

I have created this batch file so it will kill these two processes before running the game...

net stop "AVG6 Service"
taskkill.exe YzDock.exe

Now what I am attempting to do is run my game using the settings above , but after I exit out of the game I want the batch file to go and restart the two processes that I previouslly killed , but only after I exit out of the game.

Is this even possible? Im using XP Home if it matters. Any help would be appricated. Cheers.

Answer:Writing a batch file in Windows XP

Try this ...

open notepad and type in the following (italics mean you need to find the right value):

xcopy drive:\path\dvevi6 drive:\path /s/e/c/f/y

Save this as dvevi6.bat

Hello everyone,

I've got some softball questions about writing batch files.

1)What is the proper syntax to include multiple folders in a set path statement?

for example I want to run an application called fred.exe and smith.exe.
Fred is located at c:\scripts\torrent seeds\july\fred.exe
Smith is located at \\ASUA-HTPC\Datadrive 1\TV Shows 1\smith.exe
(Note I put spaces within the locations)

2)When it the % needed around both sides of a variable?

I have seen %PATH% and %PATH. I have also seen %1 and %1%.

3)What is the ~ for when associated with a variable?

Such as SET JOB=%~1

My batch writing skills are just starting so the simpler explanation the better.

Thanks for any help you can provide me.

Answer:Questions about writing a batch file.

For the first item, are you wanting to run fred.exe in one folder, and smith.exe in another folder? If so, I think you can use the "cd" command in the script before running the programs.

OK, so I have File History setup just fine and dandy to write directories to my NAS as a backup.
I've often struggled to get the hourly run to kick in and its immensely frustrating. Sometimes it has worked - but mostly not at all.

The mapping to the NAS is correct and if I manually run this it writes everything OK and completes.
If I leave the PC to auto write the files however it does nothing. See the pic above. The last manual run of this was 16th. Nothing yesterday - and nothing today. The PC has been running for several hours since the 16th, and the NAS mapping has been fine (network drives were mapped fine) so nothing to interrupt the automated run.

Any help appreciated.

Hey guys, and possibly girls, I am using my command prompt for a certain program I am designing, which requires writing results to a text file. I am using NSLOOKUP. Here is the line I type:

NSLOOKUP >dir C:\Users\MyNameHere\Desktop\here.txt

It doesn't seem to work, yet I am sure it is correct.

Could anyone show me what to do?

Answer:Cmd, writing results to a file on my desktop.

remove the "dir " from the command. It should then look like this:NSLOOKUP >C:\Users\MyNameHere\Desktop\here.txtTested it on Windows7 tho' - so YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)

Is there any way, in any HTML-insertable language (JavaScript, Perl, etc.) that you can write to a file on the local server or some how keep a record of something?
I want to keep a dynamic list of who's coming to a website, and need it to be added to each time the page is loaded. The operation would run in the background with no visual trace.
I don't want to just use the automatic emailing method, as obviously that would get a little tedious with the emails.

Any ideas?

Answer:Simply Writing to a File via Internet

Assuming that I understand your question correctly, the short answer is "yes".

Since the server displays the pages you create (and may run scripts as part of building/processing a page), you can both collect and display dynamic information as part of your page. You could use either perl or javascript for this purpose. You might look at a "guestbook" as a simple example of the type of code that could be used.

Note that the Apache web server, (as one example) produces all sorts of logfile information about who visits your site, their IP address, etc., so you may not need any additional recording (although you will have to parse the logfiles). You may be able to use the information that is already being recorded instead of writing your own code to record it again.

Hope this helps.

And while you are at it, read thru the board and check out how many problems SP2 is giving everyone. Liz
