Worse and scared after ZA!!!

Question: Worse and scared after ZA!!!

Trying to help someone who needed to get on the net in a pinch, I put Zone Alarm on his laptop. It immediately caused slow downs, and wouldn't let me remove it with it's own uninstall because it was a demo. So, I used add/remove programs. Then I went to the ZA site and found out what might remain in the registry, searched for it, it wasn't there.
The whole system was paralysed. I used Advanced System Optimizer to clean the registry, and then the programs would work, but both startup and shutdown took about 8 minutes. I tried reinstalling ZA with my own reg code, just so I could do another uninstall, using the right tool. I did that, but there was no improvement. When I tried starting in Safe Mode, I got a screen saying something was "stuck" and was directed to a bios page. Here was my biggest stupidest mistake: I said restore default bios. Dumb, dumb dumb!!!
After that, it would boot (still 8 minutes), but do nothing. I mean, I couldn't click on a thing that would work. I have no start menu...wait, it just came up, it took about 10 minutes!
What can I do? He has important data on here. I can't just wipe the disk! Is there a way to put the bios back to where they were when I clicked "restore default bios"????? Does that even matter? If I can get the programs to work again with ASO, is there another way to get startup and shutdown to work? Have I ruined everything?
Seriously, I'm shaking...please help if you can!!!

Preferred Solution: Worse and scared after ZA!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry I did make another post but it had a different title cos i didnt realise the depth of the problem and the problem has increased 10 fold since then and no one has posted so i thought a fresh post with full info was better than re-writing and bumping.. especially as the title is unrelated to the problem, the only time I could see a sign these problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, I uninstalled it cos I was getting severe problems with the computer completely hanging, after uninstalling and reboot chkdsk ran and on the first 5% or so of checking the index it found problems then ran thru chkdsk pretty fast until fixing unreadable security description datastreams.

windows works absolutely fine no problems whatsoever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream , says unable to read and boots straight into windows, again windows works fine except a little hanging.

I decided to try and give things a clean up, just deleting standard files i dont need, cleaned up ie etc, ran a full spyware scan, ran a full virus scan, installed my new firewall and rebooted..

this time it took forever to get into windows and the list of problems it brought up was huge...

it also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files, but I have a 160GB driv... Read more

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

FAIR:
After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
BAD:
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

Answer:HD/Filesystem prob:Went from fair to bad; then to worse, much worse

Test the HDD with the drive manufacturers disk tools (preferably using a different PC). Run the short and long tests. If either test fails or has errors, the drive is faulty.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Jeremy

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks,
-X

Answer:My Computer - Getting Worse & Worse! Is there hope?

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Question: Am a little scared

I posted a HJT log earlier and believe that my computer may be compromised. http://www.techist.com/forums/f70/pl...e-here-247373/ There is 4 server addresses in my logfile, and my computer has been acting really strange. I can't install programs right now, I can't update DDO, and it acts slow randomly. I recently ran all my antimalware programs, merely trying to make it faster and run normal maintenance, but then I noticed the log. is it possible that this is a dedicated server locked into my computer? or could those be the addresses used by Joomla for designing and hosting a forum? There is another oddity... my wifes yahoo account was recently compromised, and I am sure that it's just a coincedence but it has me fairly worried. any help or advice is much appreciated. thanks

Answer:Am a little scared

Have you ran anything else besides HJT?

Combofix?
Malwarebytes?
A virus scan (e.g. MSE, Avast, etc.)?

Answer:scared

Assuming you mean Super Antispyware and not Superantivirus......it could be just 3rd party cookies it is finding and removing. Those will load right back onto
the computer as soon as you visit websites unless you have changed your browser(s) settings to block them from installing.

Find the most recent SAS log and post it or run a new scan and post the results.

To find and remove other adware and malware use the programs below.

download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Question: I'm scared.

I don't know what to do. I downloaded a sound recorder software from a site, the page that referred me to it said it had some toolbar or something, but i ignored it, i'm used to that stuff. Now, i downloaded it, and everything was runing smoothly, but all of the sudden some programs started to appear, with chinese names (I'm sorry for my wording right now, i'm typing this on a broken cellphone at 6 in the morning) I started deleting them one by one, thinking it was just some some spam, stuff like that, but then, 10 new programs popped out, i quickly disconnected the internet cable, i started deleting them, one by one, i had only some chinese things left, some tencent or something, and i couldn't delete them, i didn't had the rights. The sensible thing to do was probanly to download a cleaner frrom another PC and installing it on my computer, to try to delete these programs, i remeber a french software that helped me with this last time. But i didn't, i found out there was this thing, microso.ft photos or something like that, of course, i was not looking at photos at that moment. In a long chain i won't try to explain to make me look less stupid, i lost admin rights, i can't even go into my folders, computer just shutdown after a minute and i haven't turned it on since. I really don't know what to do, maybe start it in safe mode or going back to a restore point. I can't lose my files, i stress this, i'm homeless ... Read more

My computer began to show some....strange behavior a few weeks ago. Up until today I didn't think anything about it....but after I got an email from a friend of mine claiming that he had gotten a virus from an email that I sent him...I started a full system scan. (I use Norton Antivirus) It didn't find anything, and I felt that it was not working properly. So I tried the EICAR Test String with AutoProtect on...nothing. I decided to try Avast Antivirus, and it found over 50 viruses hidden in my system that Norton seemed to be missing. (No wonder my PC is so slow) All of them were deleted from the hard drive and registry exept two.....that is what is scaring me.

From the Avast Virus Log, it says:

Sign of "Win32:Agent-IWU [Trj]" has been found in "C-Documents and Settings-All Users-Application Data-Microsoft-Network-Downloader-qmgr0.dat" file.

Sign of "Win32:Agent-IWU [Trj]" has been found in "C-Documents and Settings-All Users-Application Data-Microsoft-Network-Downloader-qmgr1.dat" file.

Avast, Norton, and McAfee cannot delete these files...even I can't delete them manually. Windows claims that they are in use by some program. The thing is, if I go into safe mode they've dissappeared. But when I boot up normally again, there they are. And I still can't delete them. So, how the hell am I supposed to get rid of these?

Answer:Getting Scared Here....

Although you are using an older version of HJT ... Your HJT Log is clean.

The locked files you listed don't look out of the ordinary and it's typical for AVG, McAfee, Windows Defender, the Windows Registry, and some other files that Windows itself is responsible for locking.

Since the files are being used and/or protected by programs they're all in-use and therefore locked.

You could try and submit the file HERE, but I think you have no nasties, just a bad AV program.

I installed a virus sweeper a week ago and found a virus called: w32.nimda.enc (Probably from downloading so much files of DC++)
There were five files infected:
desktop.eml X 3
desktop.nws X 1
sample.eml X 1
I deleted these files.
Today I got this strange message as you can see for yourself. Is my computer being overtaken? I installed ZoneAlarm just now. Should I worry? Is the virus gone?

Read more

I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. Well my computer has been active for just under 7years and im afraid one day it might die. I have only upgraded the hdd and added a graphics card. Is this putting the pc under stress. I dont really know the signs of a dieing PC. Could someone tell me what the signs are?

Answer:Im Scared My PC Might Die

Any PC could die at any time, but usually it's only one component that dies unless you are real unlucky and the psu goes taking several components with it.

You have replaced the HDD, that's a good thing.

Don't worry about it too much, if it stops working then you just need to figure out which bit died.

Question: Scared to try...

I have a Compaq Presario 6000 and I want to know if I can upgrade the power supply. It currently has an ATX 235 Watt according to the specs I downloaded from HP's website. I don't really trust this info, because the specs also say I should have 3 memory DIMMS and I only have 2. At any rate, I want to upgrade the PSU to 400 watt at least, because I also want to upgrade my vid card...can I with no harm to my computer? If so, what brand/type power supply would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Scared to try...

I looked up the stats of Presario 6000, and honestly, all the parts are so old that the whole thing is just a piece of junk.

There is no point in upgrading parts to that system because the entire thing is so old and you cant even find parts that are compatible with that system anymore. You need to buy or build a completely new PC.

Anytime you come across a suspicious file or one that you do not recognize, search the name using Google or the following databases:BC's Startup Programs DatabaseSystemLookup StartupList IndexProcessLibrary.comFile Research CenterMost of the processes in Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in XP's Task ManagerCommon system processes found in XP's Task ManagerTop System ProcessesSvchost.exe is a generic host process name for a group of services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. It is not unusual for multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time in Task Manager in order to optimize the running of the various services. The process ID's (PID's) must be checked in real time to determine what services each instance of svchost.exe is controlling at that particular time. There are several ways to investigate and see what services a Svchost.exe process is controlling, see:How to determine what services are running under a Svchost.exe processWhat Services are running in Windows XPNote: Process Explorer shows two panes by default: the upper pane is always a process list and the bottom pane either shows the list of DLLs loaded into the process selected in the upper pane, or the list of operating system resource handles (files, Registry keys, synchronization objec... Hi. My problem is my Toshiba laptop doesn't want to charge, even when I plug the charger into the laptop. From what I can tell, it's a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop. The covers for the hinges have broken, so when the laptop is opened, the left cover bends upward, but doesn't break. The right one isn't too damaged, but it's damaged enough to have put the laptop off-kilter. Just today, I attempted to plug my charger in, but it refused to charge at all. The computer still works. What should I do?

Answer:Really scared, need help!

Well it's either the AC adapter or the charge port.

If you have a multimeter, you can test the voltage output from the AC adapter while it's plugged in to make sure it's outputting the correct voltage.

While the AC adapter is plugged in the laptop, does it wiggle around? If so, it may be busted. Did a quick search, and looks like you can get a replacement for fairly cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Eathtek-Toshib.../dp/B005J2X6VY
Would require you to open up the laptop and swap out the power jack, though.

Out of curiosity, why did you - upon reinstalling the operating system - put SP1 on? You can go from out-of-the-box to SP2 with no problems.

Hi,

My free Avira antivirus just alerted me that i got 6 viruses, but when i attempted to open avira to see which ones i got, it freezes.

I have disconnected that computer from the internet, and currently on my back-up.

Oh, I've also turned it off, and shut down all power to the computer. I wonder if that helps.

Where to start lol.

Running xp and my problem started a few weeks ago. I discovered it when we went to play a DVD and I had no drive for that anymore. I system restored back 2 weeks (as for some reason no daily restore points were saved) DVD drive came back but other things went haywire. Then I was unable to system restore back to present. I can't use all of my office 2000 programs properly ie word will not let me use clipboard anymore it wants me to run office disk, when I put that in it says windows installer won't start. I went to services and it wasn't there, I reinstalled it and set it to automatic. I still have to start the services for that to get it to run as it shuts down and won't start on its own. While I was in services I double clicked on everything and in the dependancy tabs there are no dependencies listed there no more. There was a few months back. By the way did I mention that I have a 13 year old!! I believe my problem started with her doing that audition dance thing. I have run xsoftspy, avg anti-spyware to clean my system. X softspy runs nightly. When I try to access system information I get: a network error occured in connecting to windows management Instumentation, however, in services it shows as started. I did totally reinstall my office programs but to no avail. I did notice that the Application Management file in services gives me this error when trying to start it: Could not start the Application Management service on local compu... Read more

Okay, my WMP 9 is missing. Whenever I start it, or run wmplayer.exe another player opens and runs an ad for zantrex 3. Following this, an IE windows is opened and directs me to a site to buy the product. I already posted on the Windows section of this site. And was directed here. This is what I've done so far. I've ran ad-aware, stinger, nortons, spybot, trojanhunter, and trend micro. I ran trend micro last, and this was the only one to find a file. It was troj_by. The file was deleted. I then used add/remove windows components and removed WMP 9. I then went and reinstalled WMP 9 from microsoft. Unfortunately, this did not work. hey guys,

Recently I have become a victim to a mass hacking - my emails and accounts on various things have been hacked and passwords changed (luckily I have salvaged some of my more important accounts). I am currently writing to you via my laptop, as my desktop PC is the one I am thinking is infected.

To begin,
I have these programs to protect me:

Avast!
AVG
Norton 360
HiJack This!
SUPERanti-spy
Helios Lite
Spybot - search and destroy
CCleaner

Now it all started roughly 3 days ago, I went to log into my email and it said my password was incorrect - so i repeated and repeated until I asked for a new password. They said they sent it to an alternate email address - annoyingly I have never sorted out an alternative. This happened, basically, for several other accounts that I had logged into that day.

I ran all the programs above to see if i had a virus/keylogger, all found slight errors bar AVG and AVAST. AVG stated that there was a hidden key logger within my 'C:\\' Drive. I went there manually and tried to delete it, and it said it was in use by another user or program. I ctrl+delete'd and closed any suspicious processes and services. I then moved to my Avast... Avast said that I had a keylogger and would remove it for me - and so I completed the steps that removed my keylogger. It was located in my explorer.exe.

I then began to re-scan and re-scan all on in-depth long scans to ensure that everything was wiped. I set my firewall to emergency mode (w... Read more

So I see a ad for VMware and Citrix admin job. I get called in for a interview and the interview went good from my point of view. The job really turned out to be help desk for 15K less then the advertisement. The company is a small less then 10 people that is having a growth spurt. They essentially take the place of small business IT support team. They just install thin clients and VPN back to the main servers.

So anyway, I'm still looking for better opportunities and I see another Network / System Admin job. This job is to help out the only IT person they have. I'm thinking OK, the pay is better then what I make so I'll redo my cover letter and send a resume. Then it just hit me out of the blue. That job that I'm applying for WILL NOT be there in 10 years. I mean why would a small company pay $100k for a 2 man IT crew when they can pay half of that to the company I'm waiting to hear back from?

I literally have fear that all this hard work that I've put in being in IT is going to be gone unless I get in the VM world now. I'm a Cisco guy through and through but dam if it don't look like the lucky few System Admins will be working help desk in the future. BTW, this small 10 man crew is doing the IT job of 40 +/- small companies.

I've just been through MANY hours of tech support "help" with Linksys and really don't want to call them again. I have finally gotten my wireless connection to my laptop working, but I'm all hooked up in the family room and I'm afraid I may mess something up if I move the router and modem to the bedroom upstairs.

Can I unplug the router and modem and replug upstairs without messing things up? I really don't want to start over and I'm too scared to try it without knowing the answer.

Thanks

Hi I have a laptop I bought in Japan with Japanese keyboard etc. Anyways, I removed the OS and placed windows 7 on it and it works a treat, no issues at all....

When I ran the Device Doctor just more out of interest it listed many many drivers that i should update but a lot of these are sort of Japanese language keyboard updates that might screw up my system.

Some of the keys are out of sync, like the * is @ but i learnt how to remember them!

Of course I can roll back to a system restore but you reckon that is safe and fool proof, does it really 100% take it back to the way it was?

If it aint broke dont fix it, but - maybe I will have a security issue very soon if I dont update, the drivers are like 15 months old or thereabout.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer:Too scared to update....

Driver updates very rarely (more like never) contain security updates.

Quote:

Stick with this thought, uninstall that comfort-ware driver program and don't worry about it. If you think you need a driver update only ever get them from the laptop manufacturer, never through one of those driver update programs.

I have a wi-fi in my apartment, password protected, obviously. Yesterday I was working on my laptop when I saw a message appear in the lower right corner, saying that someone wants to download (upload? I don't remember exactly) a .jpeg file. I clicked on it and there were three options - allow connection this time, allow for [n] minutes, allow permanently. No "don't allow" options. I clicked "cancel" and disconnected my laptop from the Internet.

The question is, wth was that? Is it dangerous? Is my laptop unprotected or something? Maybe my wi-fi was hacked (I don't know whether wi-fi and bluetooth are related)? What should I do to prevent this in the future?

Thank you for your attention.

Answer:Bluetooth scared the sh* out of me

Your password stops them accessing your laptop, but wi-fi can be used/abused by someone , so basically just say no!
I am not that well up on wi-fi security, but all I do know is that bluetooth will ask if you want to connect- so, if you don't know where it is coming from- just say no.Your password is really about the only security for bluetooth. Just like on the web, virus attacks often need you to say yes, at some point to get access (although not always)
Someone else may be able to give you more information.

Over the past year I have used a selection of reg cleaners including CM Diskcleaner,Reg Mechanic and Eusing reg cleaner all with varying degrees of success but with NO major disasters. The first time I used the CM Diskcleaner it registered over 500 items which were duly "fixed",(after backing up the reg)and all was well with the system. After reading about RegScrubXP on this forum I gave it a try and again registered over 500 items. There were months between the two 500+ scans and in the period in between the other reg cleaners would normally highlight a mere handful of fixes.Anyhow, after again backing up the reg before running the RegScrubXP,I "fixed all" and all appeared well - until I rebooted when I found that Windows would not open any programme without knowing which prog had created it and also AVG was looking for a licence key before it would launch.Fortunately restoring the reg backup cured all but I am now literally scared to try it again as I would not have a clue as to which of the 500 items to allow and which to fix.Is Regscrub XP that much more vigorous than the other cleaners and should I just leave well alone and stick with the "safer"ones? Other forum contributors seem to have no problems with it.

Answer:Scared to use RegScrubXP

I can only speak for my own experience. I used RegScrub and it did remove the odd thing I did not want it to do, not as significant as your problems.I now use Registry Mechanic and its been fine. It's worth remembering not to get too fixed on these things. A tidy Registry is helpful but if it is too squeaky clean the dangers increase.

Answer:scared of malware

You can download Adobe Reader directly from adobe.com site. Then there would be no malware.

After you install it, open it and make the following changes: Go to Edit pull down menu and choose Preferences.
Click on Javascript on the left, and then uncheck 'Enable Acrobat Javascript'
Click on Security (Enhanced) on the left, then checkmark 'Enable Protected Mode at Startup' and checkmark 'Create Protected Mode log file'. Then select Protected View all files. Then checkmark 'Enable Enhanced Security'. Then uncheck Automatically trust ( 2 boxes )

Hello guys, I have just recently bought new computer gear. This is what im running now.
1. Asus A8n Deluxe-SLi
2. AMD Athlon64 3500+
3. Antec Smartpower 500w
4. ATi brand X1800XT (not overclocked at all)
5. 2 standart Ide harddrives
6. and 1 standard cdrom drive.
7. Last is my Aspire case coming with 2 fans. One in the back and the other on the door blowing air into the processor.

The thing is, I monitor my X1800XTs temperature alot and while i play games, it usually goes up to 70c-73c in temperature. Does this on games such as WoW and Age of Empires III. I really hate the idea of putting a water cooling solution on my videocard. Should I be worried about this 73c in temperature on my vgu or is this normal?

Answer:Got a new videocard but scared!

73C peaks for an X1800XT is incredibly low temp for an ATI core.

The R4xx and R5xx series cores have a thermal limit of 99C, and most will hit peak operating temps in the mid 80's. Most of the X1800/X1900's I've used, under heavy/extreme gaming load run comfortably in the 83-86C range.

So you're doing quite well with case cooling if yours doesn't hit the 80's!

I have a Sony Vaio model VGC-RA820G. I wanted to upgrade my video card and purchased the GeForce 8800GTS. My current power supply, did not meet the requirements needed for the 8800 so it needed to be upgraded. Unfortunately, the power supply is proprietary, so no aftermarket units will work in my system. I then called Sony's part department (3 times to ensure I was getting correct information), and they said that Sony never made any other power supply's for my model. In other words, my $400 Video card cannot be used in my computer, period. My question is this. First off, do they make external power supply's that would "boost" my current power supply? One of the guys at Best Buy's "Geek Squad" said that I could buy one from Ebay, but to honest, I'm not sure that they even exist. My other question is, if I were to buy a different tower, is there a good chance that most of my current internal components would NOT fit? Because I'm sure that the power supply is not the only thing "proprietary" in my system. I'm grasping for straws at this point, but if there is anything I can do to salvage this situation, I'd love to know what it is. Thank you in advance!

Hi allI have been thinking of getting broadband but have been horrified of all the problems people have had with it and setting things up.The connection business seems a bit tricky. We have two telephone sockets. One downstairs, and one upstairs, they share the same line. On this same line we have two sky boxes (multi- room) sky+ downstairs and normal sky box upstairs. The socket upstairs has the sky box and the telephone connected with a double adapter. Downstairs, the socket has a double adapter the phone, and an extension lead is fitted, and then my computer and sky box connection in another. Its all on the one line. How would I sort out all this in order to receive broadband? Its quite a nightmare to think of it!! I know there are these filters where would I put these with so many things connected? Confused Nuneatonian

Answer:A bit scared of getting broadband

it's quite simple if you follow the instructions as given by your ISP and, although I haven't any Sky boxes I have the filters on each of my telephone extensions (2 like you) so I would just put each of your double extension sockets into a filter. If this is incorrect I'm sure someone else will correct me.

I am running Xp on a EMachine T6410 I recently had a pop-up saying 'Security vulnaribilities in Graphics Rendering Engine, Could allow code execution-Winc*' So I was to download some software but first I was told to do a system back-up, How? I have really crappy luck lately, afraid I'll blow up!!

Answer:Help, I'm new at this & REALLY scared of messing up

There are two major problems here:

1. A Popup told you to download something to fix a potential problem. The problem probably doesn't exist, you are getting an advertisement. anytime you get a pop-up problem and it says "Click here to fix the problem" you are probably getting sold something.

2. Big Red Flag: You have a problem on your PC, and the company wants you to back up your system before running their software... umm... but won't you be backing up the problem itself?

I know that sometimes it can get confusing as to which problems are legit windows problems, or which are clever adds to get you to download your software. Try Ad-Aware and Spy-bot, these should eliminate that popup.

Question: Scared to repair

I've had my laptop for nearly 3 years, I purchased it brand new. My problem started with notifications saying system maintenance needed to be done, and it detected disk errors.
This continued for a couple weeks, finally my son turned it on and it said it doing "startup repair" do not shut off PC. I let it run like that for over 24 hours before I shut it down.
When I went to restart it, I had 2 choices: 1. start windows normally or 2. start system repair (recommended). I tried both, and with both options I ended with a black screen.
I shut it down and removed the battery, and charger, and held the start button down for over a minute to drain all the power, and restarted it. It will boot, but once it gets to uploading system files, poof black screen. Except for once I did get a flash of a blue screen before it shut itself down completely.
I have about a thousand backup CD's, but I have no clue what to do with them. I could care less about the info on it, but I am a student and start summer quarter in about a week, I need my laptop.
I am not computer savvy, and Im afraid to try anything--please recommend something:(

Answer:Scared to repair

The system maintenance warning about disk errors may have been a virus, that's a common tactic. If it is really the disk then you can run the built in diagnostics (if you have them) to test it.

If you don't care about any of the data on the laptop you can do a factory restore/recovery which will restore the system start as it came from the factory. Most laptops have a recovery partition that can be accessed either through a function key at boot up or by running system repair. Since system repair doesn't appear to be loading you may want to check on the factory restore option.

Here are the instructions for how to recover for most laptop models:

I'm sitting here with a copy of Windows 7 that was mailed to me because I qualified for a free upgrade (I bought a new Dell PC running Vista in July), and I don't want to put it in the computer.

My computer runs perfectly right now. I have a very "If it's not broke, don't fix it" mindset, and after reading all the screwy things that can happen while performing an upgrade, I don't know if I should install Windows 7.

Vista is also telling me upgrade and get Service Pack 2. I have read all the ways that has messed up computers as well. I don't know if I should install SP2 and THEN try to upgrade to Windows 7, or what....

Any advice?

Answer:Scared to death to upgrade...

This is a Windows 7 forum, so any advice you get is likely to tilt toward "go for Windows 7".

I understand your situation. If you are having no significant issues on Vista, there is no compelling reason to move.

But don't overestimate the issues. The people who are having no issues with Windows 7 aren't posting on these forums and there are millions of them.

Personally, I would go ahead, bypassing Vista Service Pack 2.

Hi folks - first post on this forum. I am fairly computer literate - my computing goes back to Vic 20 and Sinclair Speccy, but I am pretty old now, and not really wanting hassle! I am about to buy a new WIN 7 desktop, as my existing XP system is beginning to fail.

(My confidence has not been helped by downloading the WIN 7 upgrade advisor, only to find that it won't run!)

What I want to know, apart from all the really interesting problems/solutions is this:
I have a lot of somewhat elderly progs - sorry, but i really LIKE Office 97 - and I want to know if there are likely to be problems installing my existing programs onto brand new W7 machine, please?

Also interested in ANY help that anyone wants to offer

You could always run these older apps in XP mode. If you are buying a new pc, the new processor will surely support virtulaization so you shouldn't have any problem with this. This forum is full of threads regarding XP mode. Have a look around and welcome to the best windows 7 site.

Greetings.
I switched from IE to Firefox3.5something about a year ago and never looked back. Also got an add on to it that totally stopped the long term problem I was having with yahoo pre-empting all my searches. Shortly after getting Firefox, within two weeks, it was nagging me daily to upgrade to their latest version, which seems to change every month. Also tried to get me to upgrade the add ons, but when I did they didn't work right so I went back to the original add on. I was very happy with what I had, Firefox kept nagging, and I ignored them, and browsed with no problems. Yesterday when Firefox loaded a big window opened in the middle of my page saying 'Urgent.' My version was no longer being supported or protected from online attacks and I needed to upgrade to Firefox5. Well, I didn't want to, but was afraid, so I did the hour long download. And I hate this new version. It doesn't seem as good as the old, doesn't have the conveniences and features of the old, and isn't as attractive. For example, the toolbar graphics are fewer, and those are in BLACK AND GREY, rather than the pretty colors of 3.5. Additionally, after the download it informed me that I had lost my add-ons, including the one that I spoke of that solved my search problems, that they were not compatible with this version. I have tried to get 3.5 back to no avail. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET THE OLD VERSION BACK WITHOUT LOSING MY MILLION VERY IMPORTANT BOOKMARKS?? Is it... Read more

Answer:firefox scared me into upgrade

You can download v3.6.18 from Mozilla. Just scroll down through the 'Fully Localized Versions' untill you see the one you want, English (US)? Select 'Download' from the column for your OS. Left column is 'Windows', middle column is 'Mac OS X' and the right column is 'Linux'.

Firefox v3.5.xx can be downloaded from Oldversion.com on this page.

In Firefox from the 'Bookmarks' menu, you should be able to: 'Show All Bookmarks' > 'Import and Backup' menu > 'Export HTML'. Select an easy to find folder(location) and 'Save'. Your bookmarks will be saved in a file(bookmarks.html) that can be loaded back into Firefox vx.x.xx or another browser of your choosing.

You will want to know how to completely remove Firefox so you won't be installing an older version over the top of a newer version.

Even Firefox 3.6.xx will only be supported a short time longer.

What's the best way for me to back up my computer without messing up the restore partition, that's not hidden!I have 2 160gb sata hdds.C: 142GB ntfs partitionD: 149GB Extra Drive also ntfsE: 7GB FAT32 Restore partition. It's a compaq presario 1639. runs xp home sp2.I was thinking about some sort of clone software, then if I mess up my system I can re install from an image, rather taking it back to factory state. The compaq came like this with no additional disks or recovery cds or windows disk. All my other computers have had windows disks and I backed up files but when I came to reinstall windows it was painstakingly slow to install all my progs and games off cds. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer:I'm scared about backing up and need advice!

Go to PCworld or Buy of line as I have done. Acronis True Image. This is better than Windows Restore as you can put files back or the compleat drive partitions included in about ten to fifteen minutes. click hereyou create a image of the drive to anothere disc or discs

My computer is infected with something that nothing finds and my internet explorer is gone and im missing components neccessary to install a new ie.I went to driverzone and they told me a couple of my drivers are bad....so what i need to know first is how can i backup my drivers so that i can install them after i have wiped out all old info and reinstalled windows? Where the heck should I start?I am totally flabbergasted at the task ahead of me and just need a little help.

Answer:Scared Of Reformatting...gonna Do It Anyway

What computer do you have? If you have a Dell, chat with their tech support and tell them you need a reinstallation cd of Windows XP. As for backing up your info, a simple floppy drive can do that. What computer do you have? If you have a Dell, chat with their tech support and tell them you need a reinstallation cd of Windows XP. Hi, new to this forum mainly because I have a problem with my laptop :cry. I've used computers all my life but am by no means a computer expert - I know as much as I could possibly know without any training/classes for them.

First of all, I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS840/W. Prior to coming across this site, I'd been running AVG, SpyBot, and ZoneAlarm. These were installed before this computer ever touched internet (since it's been in my posession).

I first bought 'my' laptop back in June of 06, and had a motherboard failure July 07' because the fan decided to quit working, supposedly. From what I can tell, the place I took it to to get it fixed couldn't exactly buy a harddrive for this laptop without buying the whole case so they picked one up on eBay or something and pretty much gave me back a whole different computer with a better processor and more memory than I originally had. However someone else's harddrive with someone elses stuff was already on here when I got it so a friend deleted everything for me and Windows was as good as new. Ok.
Monday while using it, I can't remember what I did or if anything was installed or changed before this, but I kept getting some kind of message every time I closed Internet Explorer. I disregarded it, as I was working on homework, and moved on. I turn off my laptop that night.
The next morning I go to turn on my laptop and I notice that the lights stay on longer than usual after... Read more

While running thro' your wonderful guide to sort my PC,got stuck.

Attempting to turn off AVG 8.0 Build 224 (free) in order to run "Combofix".
-Combofix told me it was running, needed to be shut down.

(The link may need updating-current program runs to end of 08-only a reduced version downloads)

I could not turn off all the features,IE Anti-virus component,Anti-Spyware,from the advanced menu.
-So I decided to try uninstalling, and getting a new version after the Combo scan...no dice,I got this-

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

-So I got my AVG up again..virtual viagra and ginseng coffee.:hyper

So now I'm scared to death I'll end up naked (Virtually speaking),and wonder
what my next step is ? Go on with the list ? Next item is MGtools .

Answer:Scared to surf bot naked

Ok,all the steps except the Combofix (explanation above) have been done.

It all started when posting to my home photo forums,a pop-up window, from Windows asked for my Email address to continue.I closed the thing and got VERY nervous.I'll attach a pic of it.

I contacted an admin, who said it was probably my computer, not their site,so I've been alternatively scanning/freaking out,all day.

In my perambulations all over my computer, did find 5 exceptions to pop-ups
in Firefox 3,which I unchecked,my problem is obviously teenagers ( I have 2)
as well as Malware,as they were gaming sites.......time for a new password,
methinks.

Dear Moderator: If anything here is in breach of Forum Rules it is unintentional and please delete as you see fit

After having conversations with two experts (one who actually teaches high level security),I'm left wondering about my own computer security.
First I am told that any kind of e-mail attachment can contain a lot of really bad Viruses, malware, Trojans, Zombie take overs. This can be done quite innocently from person you know ,who is infected. Before you say anything about, anti virus scanning I had the explanation of how this can be done. Obviously, I won't say it here. I had it demonstrated to my satisfaction. So.....

Question # 1: Should I delete all mail except those in plain text?

The next situation is very hard for me to believe. There was a 'hypothetical" discussion that the makers of Security/Anti Virus programs are encouraging people to make new Viruses and possibly even being compensated in some nefarious way, never to be traced back.
The people I spoke with have Zero anti virus programs on their computers, except for the MS Firewall.
They say by staying away from places where you can become infected, and knowing how to manually remove these problems if they occur it is safer. When I first installed Spybot there were about 8k definitions. Now I have on that one program well over 110k definitions. I have all the big programs installed, AVG, spybot, Adaware, Hijackthis,Rookit Revealer,Superantispyware, updating the Blocked Host files,MS... Read more

I'm having no problems with my pc or OS (XP SP2), but by happenstance this morning, I checked the processes tab in AVG Anti-spyware and noticed lssas.exe.

I ran a quick Google search and saw lots of references to this as a serious trojan. I ran all of my spyware apps (AVG Anti-spyware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Terminator, Ad-Aware), and none of them register it as a problem. (I'm not sure whether or not I'm naive to rely on free apps, but I've always been careful and had thus far been successful in avoiding trojans.)

I went back to the AVG A-S and tried to terminate the process. I then got a message that windows\system32\lssas.exe was unexpectedly terminated with status 0, and got a countdown to a reboot.

Okay, now I'm scared. Is this a legit process that scare-marketing has misled me on, or is this a serious infection? Any insights or advice?

Answer:Solved: Okay, now I'm scared -- lssas.exe

I'm a little surprised that no one has responded yet. Does that mean my question is too dumb to answer?

If anyone has a similar concern and happens across this post, this is what I've gleaned thus far. There is both a legitimate process and a nasty trojan of the same name. Apparently, if the file is located in the c:\windows\system32 folder, it's legit. (It's related to user logon.) If elsewhere, you have a serious problem. It is infuriating how the scare-marketing of security software likes to gloss over that detail.

Until I hear otherwise, I'm assuming I got it right. If anyone know differently, please weigh in!

Answer:Games lagging! Scared plz help

You seem to have an internal graphics card. To get better performance in other higher-process demanding games such as NFS Most Wanted, you'd want to get a new graphics card. Your processor is very good (3.00GHz) & it's Dual Core as well, so provided you have a PCI-E slot on your motherboard and enough Watts from your power supply you can easily purchase a new graphics card. 1GB Ram is pretty acceptable nowadays although most people have 2GB or more.

Otherwise you need to tone down GFX settings for your other games to reduce lag, or go Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to Processes, and kill processes that are eating up resources.

Hi

Im in process of removing several viruses/trojans, and have had them recurring so tried to edit the registry myself using guides online that tell you wht to look for. I came across a whole list of websites within the registry maybe over 100 that list sex sites, and gambling sites and a whole lot of random sites e.g. at the top is 007guard.com, 008i.com. This was in the registry within internet settings/zonemap, I initilly paniced and thought has my comp been visiting these sites without my knowledge, and I deleted all of them including the folder itself, then I found the list again somewhere else in there and deleted tht, everything works fine on my comp but now scared what ive deleted!!!!! Help please dont say ive done something unfixable or thats going to leave me open to attack! I have several anti-malware packages running and I know ones such as spybot immunize the pc which i assume largely means internet explorer, could they be connected to this and would say downloading spybot and reimmunizing put them back (spybot isnt currently installed but was earlier today) ive deleted the whole domains folder itself! but am hoping this will work?

Or do I need to redownload internet explorer again or have i done something unfixable please help!

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersio...tNumber=1967153&WishListTitle=My+New+Computer

There is the comp i'm planning on ordering and building in about a month or so. I've been building computers for a few years now, so i'm more than comfortable with tinkering around with hardware and such.

My problem is that with all the NEW new technology coming out (dx10+vista+ram with profiles+dualcore anyone?) I'm worried about compatibility issues with the devices i've chosen to go with. Also, i'm having a heck of a time finding affordable sata optical drives for the mobo I'm going with. Is sata even that much better in terms of optical drives than ide? Or should I just buy an add-in ide card?

Any recomendations for changes to the mobo or memory or just about ANYTHING would be very much apprieciated!

Obviously overstated, since I can use the Internet, but I'm scared just the same. I was playing around with Vista Sidebar stuff and suddenly my computer screen went blank and then the machine restarted on its own.
When it came back on, I found that none of my Desktop icons would work, my Microsoft Security Essentials was off and I couldn't turn it back on, and no other apps would work.
When I tried to cut and paste some error messages into this message, I found that that doesn't work.
I can't remember how to go into Safe Mode--and, of course, I wouldn't know what to do if I could get into it.
I have Vista Home Edition. I have another computer, with XP on it, and I assume it's working okay and I will be able to see replies to my plea for help on the Outlook Express on it.
Please help, and thanks in advance.

Answer:I'm scared: My computer won't work

Reboot, and access Safe Mode by pressing F8 before Windows starts - while you're in there, check out your Device Manager, make sure there are no alerts - also check out your Event Viewer for any errors that may have occurred at or about the time of the crash...

Another shot: turn off 'Automatically Restart' in advanced System Properties...

Then boot into normal mode, and be ready to record any further symptoms...

When I received the "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" in File Explorer, I hid it because I'm not ready or even certain I want to install "10". Just a few days ago I started getting pop-ups on my desk top re "10". The first one said "Your Free Windows 10 upgrade is ready! You're good to go. Schedule your free update". I've received a couple more but with slightly different verbiage. I've read where some people have had Windows 10 start downloading by itself, they didn't initiate the download, it just started. Is there a site on the computer that I can check to see if this is actually downloading? And, if it is, how do I stop it? I'm actually leaning more and more to not installing Windows 10. I'm satisfied with Windows 8.1 and actually I don't to much on my notebook.....just e-mails, pay bills, play games, read articles, and a few other easy things to do.

When I do make a decision not to install Windows 10, how to I permanently get rid of the reserve, GWX (or whatever the correct term is), the "upgrade to Windows 10 Home" that I've hidden and anything else that has to do with "10".

Thank you.

Answer:Scared and Very Confused - Windows 10

You could set Windows Update to notify you before downloading updates.
Then when the Windows 10 download is available you can right click it & hide it.

In my case, the problem was caused by my grandson (about 13 years old at the time) surfing the net for porn. He must have given the password out to one of the sites he visited. But, relax......after this incident, I've never had another problem like that.

Hi!

Decided to ask.
After some struggle with w10 10122 - I decided to ?clean? install w10 10130.
On my MSI CR61 3M it turned out impossible to do so from USB ISO.
Had experiments with w7 - too no success.
To revive that laptop I installed W10 10130 on MSI? s disk using another computer.
And to my great surprise - it worked!
And I get (from ?cloud?) even my desktop?s wallpaper.

But then..

I was prompted to create PIN code (with text that password is thing of past..), and that was fine.

Yesterday I decided to get W 10159; but then realized that my update setting was changed from
?fast? to ?slow?. Ok. Change it back.
Not so wonderful - windows icon on taskbar (left corner) appeared to be inactive.
(say, grayed out) with working right click options. So - was not possible to get to
insiders hub.

Today , after series of attempts finally build 10159 is here. BUT-.
Now - PIN code disappeared; instead I entered my password. Fine.
In notifications - I get yellow triangle with text :

?Verify your identity on this PC
your saved credentials for apps, websites, and networks won?t sync until you
verify your identity on this PC?.

Weird. I entered my password that is - my Windows account password.

Attempt to activate something - this message stand for - brought me
effectively option to verify - and immediately was closed over with
big, black window. Attempt to disable of that black window
(that had ?cross? - upper right corner) just crushed she... Read more

My computer is now running slowly. I see much advice about tidying up the registry & getting rid of junk, paricularly downloaded free programs that don't uninstall completely. But I'm scared to do anything because of my ignorance - I'm a computer USER not and expert. You REAL experts out there: what advice can you give? What programs can I use that I can safely rely on and which don't require me to take decisions that I am not qualified to make. There's so much software that promises so much but some of the horror stories I see in this forum make me wary. I'd love to just give my computer to a real expert to do it for me but here in Crete my experiance is that the "experts" aren't and they approach the problem with typical Greek macho man style!
