How Do I Remove Programs If They Aren't Listed In Add/Remove Programs?

Question: How Do I Remove Programs If They Aren't Listed In Add/Remove Programs?

Hi,

I have a number of programs that I want to get off my computer. None of them have an uninstall option. Some say to go to add/remove programs to remove them. However, none of them are listed in add/remove programs. How do I get them off my computer? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: How Do I Remove Programs If They Aren't Listed In Add/Remove Programs?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

I would guess that you need to re-install all of them for them to do that, its just a guess, try it with one and see if it works .....

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

Hello you really nice people. Since you have helped me on several occasions, I thought I'd try one more time.

I don't know exactly when it happened; however, at some point after I installed winXP as a dual boot and have been trying out some dvd burning software, I cannot add/remove programs in win2000... it states that "no programs are currently installed on this computer."

I have tried spybot (which found a few things and have been repaired)... I have tried Norton PC Doctor (which found a few things, all of which could not necessarily be repaired) and as a last resort I downloaded a freeware program Add/Remove Programs to get my program uninstalled.

In the midst of all this, I foolishly installed service pack 4 and then had to promptly uninstall it (I think it was a conflict with my video capture card -- got the blue screen of death at reboot [even in safe mode!!]). I was able to uninstall that because I had the good sense to back up and let it give me the uninstall option.

Any other ideas ??? I am going blind trying to follow the msn knowledge base suggestions checking the registry...

I don't know what information you need from me to try and help me out, so if you need any logs or stuff that I see other people post, please let me know how to capture that information for you as well... I'm pretty computer smart, just not really troubleshooting experienced... in other words, I just build em and learn as I go along.

I'm bumping this up... I still have found no solutions... I've run Norton PC Doctor and WinDoctor... spybot... housecalls... I've reinstalled 2000 to repair and still no luck....

Someone out there has to know how to resolve this stupid error. I just know it's something simple that I don't know about... or as I always say... it's just something stupid... it almost always is.

Help please???????????

I found Snap Do on my computer last night. I've read many "fixes" for it and they all say to start by uninstalling the program. It isn't listed in my Control Panel / Add Remove Programs.
I downloaded SypwareHunter as it seemed to imply that it would find the program. After installing, scanning, rebooting (all that was required), there's still no sign of it--instead it brings me to a page where they want $29.99 to fix it. I don't know about anyone else, but when a program says free and has you do all that work and then hit you up for $, I get angry and refuse to purchase their product. Same thing happened with SparkTrust.
Has anyone else run into this problem--it not showing up in the add/remove programs? I know it's on the computer as the homepage was hi-jacked and Spyware Hunter showed 28 threats all to do with this program.
Another question--there's hardly nothing on this computer--do you think a reformat will take care of this? At first, the hi-jacking didn't bother me, but the more I read, the more malicious I find this to be and I want to get rid of it. I've also heard some proggies U pay for don't work.
Any help would be appreciated...Sue

I have backed up a friends data and used the dreaded red floppy to restore to factory settings. The Packard Bell software appeared to do this successfully and I then set about trying to remove various programs from add/remove. Virtually nothing was listed! For example Adobe Reader 5 is installed and working on the computer but doesn`t appear nor is it listed in All Programs. As basically all the preinstalled software. (Power DVD is listed in All Programmes but again not in Add/Remove)I`ve googled but can`t seem to find a clue - it sounds like a registry problem. Anyone experienced this before?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs Not Listed

The Add & Remove data is located in the registry & as you have reverted back to factory setting the registry no longer contains information regarding the programs that were installed after factory default. You could try re-installing the programs you want to remove & hopefully you should then be able to remove them.

I downloaded and ran HighjackThis once and noticed that it is now listed in my Add/Remove Programs List. Why is this? I thought it didn't actually install anything on your computer?

(I originally had it in a folder on my desktop, I think that's where it was when I ran it, then I moved it to the Programs Folder on C:, then I moved it back to my desktop. Not that any of that would matter...)

On a side note, I also ran that Startup program, and that didn't add anything to my Add/Remove Programs List...

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Is Hijackthis Listed In My Add/remove Programs?

Hello,

Not sure what your problem is though..
Hijackthis is listed in your add/remove programs because when you start Hijackthis the first time, it looks where Hijackthis is located and puts an entry in the Uninstall entry in your Registry.

Hijackthis does indeed add some registry entries when you run it, so using add/remove deletes the entries from the registry.

The startup program doesn't add anything to the registry as far as I know.

Answer:There are only a few programs listed in add/remove prog

Also make sure you are logged in as administrator. If you use (preferred) normal user for daily use and many of the programs were installed as administrator or before you started using a limited user account, they may not show up unless you are logged in as administrator. Also when you look for restore options, not that you should have a 'button' to "Show More Restore Points". If you do, then you will be able to see all of your restore points.By default your system should reserve 12% of your disk space for your restore points. Less than 8% (unless you have a very large disk) is not generally recommended. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

A friend is having problems with IE 5 and I directed her to Add/Remove Programs so she could repair it. However, IE is not listed in the list of programs. I got her to do a search to try and locate it and it is in C:\Windows.

Is this unusual? Mine is located in Program Files and of course is listed in the Add/Remove Programs list.

I am going to uninstall it for her and install IE5.5 from a CD but I was wondering why her original version is not listed in Add/Remove programs.

I'm trying to blame Easy Cleaner for this. I made a registry backup and Easy Cleaner made a backup itself before I told it to clean my registry. It scanned and removed a lot of registry entries (The number was staggering.)

I rebooted later, and suddenly noticed that my logon had changed. Instead of the Windows XP style (You know, display of names to the right, click one enter password etc) I was back to the old Windows gray floating box with username and password entries. I didn't like it. So I went in and used my registry backup, restarted, and it was still the gray floating box. I went in, and used Easy Cleaner's backup, and still the gray floating box. So I got miffed and tried to go uninstall Easy Cleaner... And I couldn't access my Add/Remove Programs. :\ But naturally, I could still access it through Easy Cleaner itself, so I used Easy Cleaner to uninstall itself. >_>

So for about a week now I have been unable to get to Add/Remove Programs, and I just today found out that the Device Manager under My Computer - Properties isn't working either.

The same thing happens with them both. The computer is busy for a second, like it's trying to load them... And then nothing opens.

Answer:Add/Remove Programs and Device Manager aren't working...

And yes, I tried just re-enabling the welcome screen, it doesn't work. Welcome Screen is enabled, Fast User Switching is enabled - I still get windows classic logon. And sorry for the double post but this was three pages back and I really need help...

But when i check the c:\program files drive...whoaaa...tons of folders...what's the best way to remove these programs? just delete the folders and hunt them down in regedit? thanks in advance guys....

Answer:removing programs not listed in add/remove -control panel

well when i delete games in add/remove program it almost always leaves folders half-empty so it would be better if you removed them manually including the desktop chortcuts.

the add/remove program is for people who don't understand windows.

Hello - my laptop has OS XP Professional version 2002. Originally when things went haywire... I couldn't see any of my icons on my desktop. I was able to run "firefox" and get here MG site. I was able to run the Malware Removal and was only able to get the attached logs. I couldn't uninstall AVG 2011 which didn't allow me to run some of the anti-malware. I have tried downloading it and hitting the removal button several times with no success.

When I tried get one of the logs to show on my desktop, that's when the missing icons on my desktop seemed to magically appear.... only thing is they appeared as "ghosts". I can see them, but they seem translucent. I did try to open a file and everything in it was "ghosts". I could see through them. And yes the log was able to be sent to the desktop.

When I hit the start button and go to the Programs, the only thing listed right now are Malware Anti-Malware, Super AntiSpyware and AVAST. Previous to running the Malware Removal there was nothing listed in Programs.

Attached are the two logs that were able to run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This would stop you from running ComboFix but it does not normally stop you from running MGtools. Did you try to run MGtools as requested?

I went to uninstall some junk programs from my computer, and NONE of the programs in the Add/Remove Programs window have the Remove button. Is there any way to fix this or reverse it? confused

Answer:Unable to remove ANY programs thru the Add/Remove Programs window!

Try this:

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This starts the Registry Editor. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SOFTWARE
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Uninstall
\<Program Name>

Click on the + next to the Uninstall key to reveal the subkeys.

You will notice sub keys with a series of numbers. Click on each of these number series one at a time and look in the right pane for "Display Name", this is the name reflected in Add/Remove Programs.

In the right-pane, do the following:

Look for the REG_DWORD(s) "NoRemove" and "NoModify"

Double-click NoRemove (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
Double-click NoModify (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0

If NoRemove is set to 1, the Remove button will be unavailable
If NoModify is set to 1, the Change button will be unavailable

I just rebuilt this computer and it working basically ok now. heres the issue im having, when I go to add remove programs it only shows the stuff ive installed since the reload, not all the programs that were installed on the system previously. I think the registry is not right, is there any way the restore it or have windows rebuild it? or will all the programs need to be reinstalled, most of them still work, but some do not.

Answer:rebuilt system from backup, but programs dont show in add/remove programs

I dont know what sort of backup you did. When you reinstall the o/s
its like starting over. Your right about registry issues. Thing is, is that
when you install a program it inserts a special registry entry. When you
reinstall windows, it has no clue as to how to deal with that particular
entry, thus you need to reinstall. For games and other programs, if
you have saved folders, they might be salvaged. Smarter minds may
differ, maybe they will chime in....

Where is Vista 64's add/remove programs icon? Stopping startup programs

I've got a few useless start up programs that I have no use for and I want to prevent them from starting up. Some annoying EA download manager, Adobe, etc. I want them to stop checking for updates every time I boot up or kick me out to windows in the middle of a game.

I looked in control panel but I do not see the icon for add/remove programs or anything where I can run msconfig like in XP. How can I remove or shut them down in Vista 64? Thanx

Answer:All "change" "remove" Option Buttons Are Missing From The Add Or Remove Programs Utility?

Have you tried using System Restore to return to a previous state before your problems began? Also see: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htmScroll down to #337 and click "Restore Change or Remove Programs" in the right column.or "Add/Remove Programs list are missing Change and Remove buttons"http://www.winxptutor.com/arpbuttons.htmThis involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable.

I have tried previously to uninstall my HP Officejet G85 printer from HP Pavilion a1130n running XP Media. There is no Change/Remove button in Add/Remove Programs (but the program is there, 150 MB), and the file suggested on the HP website for uninstalling older printers from XP produces a message that it's "unsupported" (can't remember exact verbiage, been a while since last tried).

Even reinstalled in the hopes that a message would come up to the effect "this program is already installed, do you want install to remove it prior to completing this install," but it just installs the printer again with a number after it ... I'm up to "hp officejet g series - 3."

Now I have the mother of all paper jams and black ink leaking out of the underside of the g85, so I have no choice due to work deadlines and time constraints but to physically remove it and install a new printer tomorrow.

Any hope of removing this from my system altogether and starting fresh before installing another printer????

Hello, I am having trouble locating the right registry file for Logmein. I really use this program a lot for work , but the problem is that I am using a family computer and my little 18 year old brother keeps messing with the program by either right clicking it and exiting it out or removing it completely from the add or remove programs. He does this because he thinks that it will put viruses on the computer, I tried asking him to stop but it is like trying to convince a rock to move for you.

So, what I'd like to do is:

1.)Hide the program in add/remove list
2.)Use the registry to remove the icon by the clock in the system tray.
3.)Make this program almost undetectable to a moderately computer literate person.

Answer:Don't know how to remove logmein from system tray & add or remove programs list

couple of ways of going about it

1. create him a separate account and set it to standard user so he doesn't have the rights and create a password on your account.

CONTINUE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I HAVE NOT TESTED THE FOLLOWING.

2. i haven't tested this with logmein and this may corrupt your installation and make it very hard to repair unless you know what you are doing.
goto regedit hklm>software>microsoft>windows>current version>uninstall> hit F3 (search) and type logmein or go through the list manually until you find it.

back up the key by right clicking the logmein key and click export save it somewhere safe! then delete the key, this *should* remove the add/remove programs info but i am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong. See below image for example on this step.

note: logmein may be under a clsid (string of numbers) or under logmein or similar for the key. the below example shows where to click.

try running logmein, if it fails to work, run the reg file you exported before you deleted it and it will put the information back. abandon this and go back to step 1.

You should be able to remove the system tray icon from within the software itself, there is probably a tick box somewhere, if not try running (start>run) msconfig and clicking the startup tab. there should be a logmein entry there, untick the box and restart your pc. on the message box that pops up tick the box saying you are aware youve changed system config etc and don... Hi all,
I have a somewhat interesting problem here. I have a computer that was infected. I ran Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, Avira Anti-virus, and Spybot search and destroy. It appears to have cleaned out all of the bugs but now I can't see any of the original programs on the desktop or in the start menu. However when I open control panel I can see all of the programs listed there. Also, when I go into the the program files folder itself there are no programs listed. Additionally, when I went to boot into safe mode I now get the error: The File viaide.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

Any thoughts on how I might be able to restore the desktop and file folders to reflect what is shown in add/remove programs without doing an OS reinstall?

When I download a program & install it, sometimes it will show up in the Add/Remove Programs list, sometimes it won't. Why is that? And how do I remove a program that doesn't show up in the list? Thanks.

Answer:Why Don't All Installed Programs Show Up In Add/Remove Programs List?

Depends how the application was written and what installer the author used.

If it does not show up in Add/Remove programs, it should have an "uninstall" file in the program's directory which would achieve the same thing.

I installed Java, Flash player and adobe reader X but when I go to add/remove they are not showing up in that section? Has anyone any suggestions or advice as to why this is happening?

Thank you.

Hello,

I've just upgraded an old Win ME system with a PIII 800 MHz processor, 128 M Ram to XP Home. After doing so, I noticed that many of the programs that were on the Add/Remove Programs List are no longer there. I also notice that I can't install or uninstall ZoneAlarm Free because TrueVector is said to be running.

I don't understand why TrueVector would be running if ZoneAlarm is 'not installed'. If I end the task and try to install or uninstall ZA, I'm still not successful.

When booting the system, there appears to be a lot of disk activity - like if there is a virus scan taking place at boot up. Norton System Works was installed previously, but I don't see it in the Add/Remove Programs list or the Start Programs List.

I've done the Malware Scans, as documented in the Malware Forums, and run HJT which currently shows no signs of malware. So I'm wondering if there are some known issues with upgrading from ME to XP Home that would cause this kind of strange behavior.

Can you offer any other suggestions to try to resolve this issue? The virtual memory is reported to be too low. It's set at 384 M.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bper

Answer:Missing Programs in Add/Remove Programs After XP Home Upgrade

To change the virtual memory (paging file size)

-control panel
-system
-Advanced
-Performance - settings
-Advanced
-Virtual memory - change
-custom size

I would just set the initial and the maximum to the recommended size
listed near the bottom of the box (mine is 1150)
depends on how large your hard drive is as to how much you want to hand over

-set

-Ok
-Ok
-Ok

64MB of RAM is the bare minimum needed to run windows XP
128MB of RAM is the minimum recommended by windows XP
256MB of RAM or more will make a huge difference

I dont really see what this would have to do with your programs acting up though
Your best bet would be to back up all of your data, settings etc
and reformat your hard drive to achieve a clean instal of Windows XP

Okay,
I was having major problems with XP so i decided to do a dirty install. So I reinstalled, keeping all of the other data on my hdd. But when I got windows back up and running, I still had all the programs in the Program Files Folder, and they could run, but all the shortcuts on the desktop, the start menu, and the add/remove programs are gone.

I understand why this happened, but I haden't even thought about it before reinstalling.

I checked around and even resorted to Microsoft's site and their resolution was: Revert to backup of shortcuts....lmao

Well, all help is appreciated and thanks in advance,
Gold

Hi all. I'm tuning up a pc for a friend whose kids have installed numerous trial games, itunes, music oasis, etc., and other misc. crap. Got most of it to my liking except this: can't get rid of 2 entries in the Add/ Remove Programs applet in Control Panel (itunes and music oasis). Here's what I've done so far:

Searched the web high and low and tried every suggestion offered to no avail

In Regedit went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Current Version|Uninstall and removed all the entries I wanted, then rebooted, went back into Add/Remove and itunes and music oasis are still there

Opened C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf, but the 2 entries aren't even listed

Someone suggested using Tweakui, but, as far as I can tell, that only removes the applets in Control Panel (unless I'm missing something there)

Installed a program called Add Remove Program Cleaner, but the 2 offending entires aren't listed in there either

And, finally, reinstalled itunes and music oasis, then rebooted, uninstalled them again, and the entries are still in the Add/Remove Programs list

This is starting to irritate me.
Thanks in advance for any new suggestions as I'd like to get this thing back to him cuz he needs to watch the farm markets tomorrow a.m. if he can

My laptop is missing lots of programs under Add/Remove Programs that I know are installed. Furthermore, some that are listed don't have the Remove button next to it. The missing programs aren't listed in the Uninstall registry key and I'm confident there are not viruses on the machine.

Any idea how to fix this? I don't think a System Restore will help as this machine probably has had this issue for quite some time now.

Hello everyone!

A few days ago, I had some problems with a virus and malware, and one your friends helped me to resolve the issue. The details are here in case you'd like to see:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...-new-post.html

After that, in order to make sure the problem doesn't happen again, among other things, I ran Secunia OSI. It identified several programs as insecure and asked me to update them (Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, and a few others). Since some wouldn't upgrade automatically to the newer versions I started removing them through Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. After I removed ZoneAlarm, the Change/Remove buttons all disappeared. To resolve this, I looked around, and one of the suggestions people had made was to save the file in line 337, second column, located in this page: www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and clicking on it.

I saved the linked .reg file, and clicked on it. It just opened with NotePad and nothing else happened.

I reinstalled one of the programs that I had uninstalled (Adobe Flash), and that one has now the Remove button in front of it, but the others still don't have the buttons.

I'll greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have.

Thanks!
Yahoot

P.S. Sorry for the links. I tried to remove the hyperlinks, but they keep coming back even when I disable "Automatically parse links in text".

OS: WinXP Pro SP 3
Hardware: Intel Pentium III

Answer:Change/Remove buttons missing from Add/Remove Programs

When you double click on the .reg file - it shouldn't be opening in notepad.

Try running the REG File Association Fix found on this page.

i cant tell you the last time it worked, because i havent tried to move anything for a long time.

Its frustrating me to no end!

ive run spy bot search and destroy and lavasoft ad aware personal and both have found nothing. and im running AVG and thats found no little nastys!

It sounds as if your registry needs cleaning. I would advise you to d/l RegSeeker which you can get here http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm, follow the instructions carefully in the README.txt.

NOTE: As I always advise, BACKUP your registry before making any changes.

Answer:remove unwanted entries in Add/Remove Programs applet

From the Web:One method: This method avoids editing the registry and should be tried first. The easiest way is to open Add/Remove Programs and select the listing for the program you know has already been deleted. Select the application and click the Remove button. Since there is no application to 'remove', the process will time out and you'll be presented with an option to remove the entry.Another method: To manually remove the orphaned entries from the Add or Remove Programs applet, follow these steps:Click Start, Run and type regedit.exeNavigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Uninstall

Backup the branch to a file Note: Each subkey represents a program that you've installed. To determine which program that each key represents, click the key, and then view the DisplayName value data in the right pane Select the subkey that you want to deleteRight-click on the subkey and choose DeleteClose Registry Editor

Hi all,

I just went to uninstall a program and found that the Change/Remove button is missing for almost all entries in Add/Remove Programs.

Out of curiosity, I just scanned the registry with CCleaner, and most of the programs I have installed showed up as an Uninstaller Reference Issue.

Does anyone know how this could have happened, or what I need to do to fix it?

During the past couple of days I've received some help here for something very minor, which I don't think is related. Here's the link to the thread:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=154644

Incidentally, a few hours ago I uninstalled a small program with no problems, so it's just occurred.

Thanks!

In the right-pane, do the following:

Double-click NoRemove (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
Double-click NoModify (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0

If NoRemove is set to 1, the Remove button will be unavailable
If NoModify is set to 1, the Change button will be unavailable

However, in Add/Remove programs there is an entry for Antivirus 2011. When I click on remove, a box pops up saying:

An error occurred while trying to remove Antivirus 2011. You do not have access to \\ \globalroot\systemroot\system32\userinit.exe. You can specify the new uninstall program below.

I have it not Uninstalled, but I have it deleted (I have delete the folder without uninstall it) and the software still present in my add or remove program. when I try to remove it from add or remove program, there's some error. I have attached a screenshot for that error. Thank you for helping me.

Answer:The Uninstall file was deleted, I can't remove it from add or remove programs

Re-install the software; then remove it properly via Add and Remove or Uninstall.

In some cases, the install file of a program would also have an uninstall built into it, in that case, you can just use that.

Answer:remove unwanted entries in add/remove programs applet

Maybe I'm missing something, but typically the way to remove entries from Add/Remove is to uninstall the program, not fiddle with the registry.Unless for whatever reason you want the program to remain installed and the entry to be hidden. Sounds to me like the programs are "repairing" the uninstall data.Or, you uninstalled them, but their entries remained for whatever reason. Could be that a "update" program (apple likes to stick those all over windows machines) or one of their various background services is restoring the key.No doubt you already found this. Also,  you can use CCleaner to attempt to remove the entries manually.

I hope i'm posting correctly, i originally posted on the xp forum.

problem, no remove links at the add-remove programs in control panel. most listings on the program list are not really programs, when i googled the listings it comes back with links about malware. most of the programs that are actually installed on the pc are not listed at add-remove programs.

My problem all started about two or three weeks ago when Windows Security Center popped up saying that my computer was infected with various viruses. So when it prompted me to remove the infected files, it requested a password of some sort that I didn't have, so i just ignored Security Center when it came up. Then my computer wouldn't let me open Mozilla Firefox. I had to use Internet Explorer and then somehow I hit a button that would search for something using my default internet, meaning Firefox. So I found a way to get around the block Security Center was making. But whenever I would try to do anything some window would pop up from Security Center saying I was infected and it would ask me if I wanted to block whatever file it was. I decided to just ignore Security Center whenever it came up. Then, I'm not sure when it happened, but a window would pop up when i turned on my computer and it says "rundll32.exe Application not found." So now when I try to open up something I have to search through my program files to find something that will be able to open whatever it is that I need. I have been able to open up Firefox but if I try to open up something like Security Center or almost anything from Control Panel, it won't let me open it. For instance, when I try to open up Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel a window pops up saying "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found." I am able to open up most files,... I have a lot of programs installed and have my own toolbars to access them. Seeing all those programs on the Programs list of the start menu is distracting. All I really want is the folders that house subprograms. The only option offered is to uninstall but not to remove from the list. My guess is the registry but where to look?

Well, that's new - the normal request is 'how do I add things to the Start?'

No, not in the registry. There are actually two folders that are combined to make that list: one for All Users and a personal one for each user. You can customise both. This Tutorial tells you how.

Hi,,,,, My computer got infected with virus's and malware related stuff. And maybe in the process of removing the infections i have been left with 3 problems. A lot of programs are missing from add remove programs list
The remove TAB in the add remove list is'nt there any more
When i restart my computer or turn it on my screen resolution changes
I have looked here > http://www.winxptutor.com/arpbuttons.htm But that doest sort the remove TAB out for me it is still missing. Also when i went the to set NoRemove (REG_DWORD) set it to 0 and NoModify (REG_DWORD) set it to 0 I thought i may see all the programs installed on my computer there but they weren't
I was having help and was asked to follow this:
Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.
After doing so every time i restart my PC on turn it on my screen resolution changes and i have to change it back to how i like it.
Not to wast time ill put the thread title below so you can see what we have tried.

Hi.Can anyone tell me how I can remove a program from the list when you click Start / All Programs list on one user account but not on any other? If I remove a program it seems to remove it from all accounts on the computer. There are three accounts on my PC running Windows XP Home. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove programs from Start/All Programs list

You can copy the program you want to have under a particular account to the Start Menu folder for those accounts and delete it from the Start Menu folder of All Users.Click on My Computer and look in C:\Documents and Settings\ and you will see a number of folders. One will be called All Users and there will be three others for the accounts you have set up. Open folder \All Users\Start Menu\ and look for the program you want to move. It may be in folder Programs or even in a named folder in here. Cut the program and copy into the appropriate \Start Menu\ folder for your account.Hope that helps.

I have two two programs on my Add/Remove programs list that I've already uninstalled. The Sims: Livin' Large, and Macromedia Freehand 10. The Sims is over 600MB, and Freehand doesn't show a size next to the program name. I've already uninstalled them both via Add/Remove programs, and I've deleted both the folders from the Program Files folder, but they don't leave the Add/Remove programs list. I click to uninstall the Sims again, and nothing happens. I try to uninstall Freehand and it says:

An installation support file could not be installed. The system cannot find the specified file.

Could anybody help me get these things off my programs list? And another small side question: I rolled back to Windows Media Player 10 months ago, but Windows Media Player 11 Format runtime is still present on my list. Is it safe to uninstall? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Removing Deleted Programs From Add/remove Programs

Hello Kanye,I see you have an open HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system. At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If, after your log has been cleaned, you still need help, please PM a Moderator and we will re-open this topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

I inherited a computer and upgraded it from 98 to XP. It had been set up with fat files (don't ask, somebody must have thought it was a good idea at the time) and hence multiple logical drives. Using partition manager, I got the files upgraded to ntsd (i'm dyslexic and didn't go back to check the initials) and am in the process of consolidating more logical drives. My problem now is that the add/remove programs list only shows the programs on c: drive. I want to uninstall some things so I can re-install them on the new consolidated c: drive. Any ideas on how I can get add/remove programs to list my other programs? Thanks for any help.

Answer:add/remove programs only displays programs on c drive

This might sound like trouble, but I think you would be much better to just format and start over with a fresh install of XP. That way you know you got it right, and I've seen problems with upgrading from something to XP. Just a thought, especially if you are going to be uninstalling programs and reinstalling them. Just start over and install them

A very long time ago, I had a user account for me and one for one of my friends. After a while, he didn't need to use my computer anymore, so I deleted his account, through the control panel's users option. He had downloaded something called Beam!2D and it shows on my Add/Remove programs. I try to do the add/remove and it will not remove it. I can see the path of where the program is supposedly installed, but the thing is that it's under the c:/Documents and settings for my friend and that account doesn't exist, so there is no folder.

It's taking 19,992mb and 19,923mb, because there are two instances of the program. How can I uninstall something that technically doesn't really exist? I don't want to restore my computer if I can avoid it.

Hi, I performed the runme part and have listed all results below. I cannot seem to add or remove some unknown programs from my list. I do not believe that they're malware. Help anyone? I've already done a system restore and don't want to delete using ccleaner in case it's something I need.

1. Basic Computer Maintenance:
Add/Remove Programs: Encountered long list of programs that are unknown and unremovable.
Cleaned hard drive using CCleaner
Removed invalid registry entries using CCleaner:ran 4x
Startup: only 2 programs run on startup: AGRSMMSG and ATIModeChange
Defragmented C drive using both Microsoft and IObit SmartDefrag

2. House Cleaning and Setup
Am not using Multiple Antivirus Apps or Firewalls
Under control panel/add remove programs, no malware programs listed, only unknown and unremovable programs.
Msconfig changed back to Normal Startup Mode from Selective Startup
No Quarantined folders
Emptied recycling bin
Reran CCleaner and removed excess items from startup, only above 2 remain
Repeated above step on all other users

3. Enabled viewing of hidden files etc.

4. Followed Windows XP Cleaning procedure
Downloads: Combofix to desktop
Spybot search and destroy download new version
AVG Anti-Spyware
MGtools to C drive

Install & Run Scans
When I ran AVG it did not produce a log even though I followed the steps.

I discovered TI1620/1520 on add or remove programs and surprise surprise it did not have a "change/remove" icon. i had a similar problem with webfldrs xp and managed to remove it by typing msiexec /x C:\Windows\System32\webfldrs.msi on the run command. i was under the impression that i could remove TI1620/1520 by typing msiexec /x C:\Windows\System32\TI1620/1520 on the run menu I'd be able to remove it but that did not work could someone please tell me what this software is and how to remove it

Answer:can't remove TI1620/1520 from add or remove programs

Make a backup of your registry before modifying it!

Click Start > Run > Type in regedit

When Registry Editor opens navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Locate TI1620/1520 and delete it.

This will remove it from Add/Remove Programs. After you do this you can manually remove the files and folders.

Greetings. First off, I wasn't quite sure where to put this, so I apologize if this is in the wrong forum area.

Now for the problem.

Two months ago I uninstalled Final Fantasy XI and Playonline Viewer. However Playonline Viewer and Playonline Viewer Tetra Master still appear in the Add/Remove programs list.

I have tried removing said program via regedit but I can't seem to find it in there.

I can't find anything about it anywhere on my system, yet it still appears on the list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, let me explain. This happened last month.

Once I decided to get rid of ZoneAlarm after installing it, in favour of COMODO. But after it uninstalled and requested a restart, the computer froze and the BSOD appeared. After reboot, ZoneAlarm was obviously gone, no registry keys, system files and no entry in Windows Security Center. But I forgot to check the Add/Remove Programs.

Now the entry's still there even though I uninstalled it a month ago. How do I remove it?

hey guys and sorry if im reposting something that has been asked a million times before but my search isnt working when i try because the school's server is acting up really bad today.

i have a computer with 2 hard drives and i took out the second hard drive because im selling the computer but i still want the programs on it, which will run still without any extra files from the C: drive. so my question is this, how can i remove items from the add/remove programs list in the control panel without actually removing them? some i can go through and when it trys to uninstall something itll come up with an error and it will ask me if I want to remove the program from the list but other's dont work that way. any help would be great!

Answer:remove items from add/remove programs list

THe question is how does anybody know that the programs on drive D: do not have files on drive C:? If you want the programs that are used you have to install them again on the new computer, Windows of any version registers these programs in the system registry so therefore they have to be installed. The data is different this is not in the registry and can be backed up easily by making the drive a slave drive on the secondary IDE cable.

I am trying to totally delete and wipe out the icon & program on my desktop showing "AOL for Broadband".

When I left click on it and click on delete, a message pops up saying "Deleting the shortcut to GtCDTool only removes the icon. It does not uninstall the program.
If you want to uninstall the program, use Add or Remove Programs in control panel".

Well, I go to Add or Remove Programs and I cannot find anything listed as "AOL for Broadband" or "GtCDTool".

Anyone else here know how I can remove this program?

Okay, I have to say that one of my biggest pet peaves of the microsoft operating system is the inefficiency of system updates, and where they are stored. For example, Windows installer 3.1 is an update related to the inner-workings of the operating system itself, yet windows displays it in my add/remove programs list. This is software that I have no intentions of getting rid of, so is there a way I can remove it from the add/remove programs list without actually removing the critical files that are needed by the system? My add/remove programs list is getting rather cluttered, and the majority of it is system updates that show up even when the 'show updates' option is not selected.

It began when I was browsing and out-of-the-blue a popup saying "HDD Failure - etc. etc. We recommend you restart your machine" came up, it looked legit so I checked out my PC to see some desktop items (not all) had dissappeared. Naturally I restarted machine and went on my normal user;

- my desktop was completely black and their were no icons, their were only a few programs listed in all programs aswell.

- A program called "Windows XP Fix" was running, it was obviously false software, I managed to delete its root (i think) from All Users / Application Data / 01032483.exe (or something)

- A program called browser+ was in my All Programs which it let me uninstall.

- If i go to a different user there's desktop icons and i can use my browser (still limited All Programs though) but if i click on a link it sends me to different web pages like canadasasquach.com or matalan.com (lol?) it's really messed :/)

Stuff is attached I appreciate your help <3

Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Hello Splungee, this one is a bit tricky. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

When I click on the desired program, it does not give me the option (the little box which says "remove") to remove the program from the PC. This is the case with about 90% of the programs on the list. What seems to be source of this problem?

Answer:I can't remove programs in the "Add or Remove Programs" feature

Can be several factors. Moving or deleting parts of the original installation can cause that problem. Some programs will also look for the original installation file or ask for the CD before they will modify an install. In any case, you can manualy remove/cleanup the programs.

I have a customer that has downloaded many antivirus software packages on his XP desktop. When I went to remove them in add/remove programs, they and most other programs were missing. Also in Task Manager SBAMSVC.EXE was utilizing 85% CPU usage. Help please. THANKS - - ROP

Answer:Add/Remove programs don't show most programs

Hi

SBAMSVC.EXE is Sunbelt Anti-malware service. To uninstall things not on the list, try revo uninstaller. And if there are many AVs installed, it would explain the high CPU usage of Sunbelt.

I have about 75 programs installed.
About 10 of those show up in my Add/Remove programs list and I can only uninstall 3 of those 10 programs.
What's happening?

Answer:Only a few programs show up in Add/Remove programs.

You don't tell us what your operating system is, so I don't know if THIS is relevant?

WinXP Home

i recently went thru a malware attack. details can be found here: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=28340

the only thing left is that i cannot use MS Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

I get 4 programs populated and then thats it, just hangs there.

i've searched all over the net, but everyone in the world has "add or remove programs" in their posts, so its impossible to narrow down.

so, im stuck and i have exhausted my usual reference - google searches...

anyone experienced this?

any help is much appreciated.

thanks in advance,
chuck
