Lenovo design chief wants to build a retro-styled ThinkPad laptop

Question: Lenovo design chief wants to build a retro-styled ThinkPad laptop

Lenovo's VP of Design, David Hill, wants to create a new ThinkPad laptop that is heavily inspired by the old-school designs of popular ThinkPad laptops from the IBM era, stretching as far back as 1992.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo design chief wants to build a retro-styled ThinkPad laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo design chief wants to build a retro-styled ThinkPad laptop

I used to use one of those old IBM Thinkpad laptops at around that time and I thought it was the coolest thing ever even if it was terribly slow, weighed almost a ton, had a crappy pixelated display (~2ppi it seemed) and was about a metre thick. I loved it.

Hi there,

About to make my own workstation for print and web work, wanted to know what I should be on the look out for in regards to instability issues on Windows 7 and 8/8.1.

At work, we're on i5 Gateways (stop laughing) and they run like champs -- but we've disabled EVERY SINGLE updating feature on them. Once we gutted all the Gateway crapware made some adjustments, the cord was cut, so to speak.

I've considered just buying myself the same Gateway and be done with it -- but I'd like to know what are the biggest culprits of instability issues in the latest Windows OS?

Answer:NEW BUILD: What is chief cause of Win7/8 instability?

Besides hardware ? drivers of course. Using some "miracle" speedup and customizing tools, ranks pretty high in my books. Skipping updates or updating highly modified windows can make a mess of it. Defender, as much as some like it is not a really very effective unless one is extremely careful and not visiting suspicious sites and using a lot of memory sticks you don't know where it's been. So, a good AV + something like Malwarebytes for occasional checks is practically a must if one is active on the net or has a lot of unknown files going thru the system.
All in all, a nicely set system without too much "shmucking around" should not have any problems at all. I have seen even lovely XP last many years without a hitch on computers used only for let's say accounting, CAD or other programs without owners modding or otherwise damaging OS itself.

Hello at Lenovo, there haven't been any news about the TP Retro (TimeMachine) project released for a couple of months. So I'd like to ask, what's the state of it. I am only aware of these official websites:http://blog.lenovo.com/en/blog/retro-thinkpad-time-machine/http://blog.lenovo.com/en/blog/retro-thinkpad-time-to-think/ Thanks for your answers in advance, Lenovo. Kind regardsrastaman

Answer:ThinkPad RETRO (TimeMachine) - WHEN?

Here's what David Hill said about the project at CES: https://youtu.be/8lqAa_eD84A?t=810 And here's some reddit posts on it: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/42m7yl/so_any_new_updates_with_thinkpad_retro/https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/45b766/any_news_or_rumors_on_the_thinkpad_retro/ Looks like they're working on it. Fingers crossed that at CES 2017 (ThinkPad's 25 anniversary); we'll see it It'll make many ThinkPad fans happy

Hi,As a side project, I've decided to take one of the 1990's IBM thinkpads, throw out all insides and fit a brand new subnotebook/netbook in. A similar concept as with a classic car, except done to a Thinkpad. In terms of parts - basically, I'm looking for the most awesome-looking retro laptop - I've narrowed it down to either an IBM 755, IBM 365 or an IBM 760. The plan is to gut it (including the original LCD) and stick in the motherboard & LCD from the new lappy (with a generous helping of Dremel and hot glue). About the keyboard + trackpoint - I'll get a USB Thinkpad keyboard and use its insides & matrix (the only thing remaining from the old keyboard would be the keys & key switches).First of all - which one of the laptops looks the best, in your opinion? Or have I skipped another awesome-looking Thinkpad that I can actually find? (i.e. 701 is rare)Next - where can I get the exact dimensions? Both the physical case (h x w x t) and the screen size would be best.I also need a way of working around the screen swap - the old Thinkpads are 4:3, and new notebooks are all 16:9 (which would leave a gap at the top and bottom of the bezel).Any other input is really welcome, too.PS: if anyone's willing to sell one in a good condition (hinges, keys, lid) - send me a PM.

I purchased a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 a few months ago and I voluntarily purchased the three-year extended warranty because I had heard such great things about Lenovo's repair services and warranty services.  Many people had told me that the warranty services were top-notch and frustration free.  Not true so far in my experience.  First, the screen crack started out as a hairline crack.  I did not drop the laptop or in any way cause the problem.  It just appeared one day and then got worse.  I spoke with Lenovo and they sent me a box to send it to them for the repair, but then they sent it back to me unfixed.  They did not even attempt to fix the crack and told me that they would require my credit card number to repair the screen and that it would cost no less than $900.  This is nearly twice the price of the laptop itself as purchased new.  The Lenovo technician apparently thought that I had caused the crack in the screen and nothing I said could change the technician's false belief that the problem had actually occurred through no fault of my own and might actually be a manufacturer's problem.  I am not happy with Lenovo's handling of this matter so far and wanted to see if others had had similar problems.  Another problem is that if Lenovo does not fix the laptop, then I have a 2 and half year remaining warranty that I paid for that will now be for a laptop that does not even work.  I am now stuc... I ordered a Thinkpad W530 on 8-22-12 and did not get an order status update until 8-31-12 when the order status said it would be shipped on 8-31-12, No additional updates happened until 9-10 until a new ship date of 9-10 showed up. Here it is 9-12 and no shipping information has happened. Is this standard for Lenovo? How long did it take for Lenovo to ship your thinkpad?

Answer:How long does it take for Lenovo to build and ship a Thinkpad W530?

Look at the 2012 Shipping thread sticky for a good idea of what the process is from order to shipping. Apparently it varies from order to order. I got lucky - ordered my W530 on 9/2/2012, it shipped from China on 9/9/2012 and is scheduled to arrive either 9/13/2012 or 9/14/2012 depending on customs. Other than that I'm not sure what causes the delays or speeds up the process Good luck!

Answer:how can I build and order online ThinkPad SL400 from lenovo malaysia?

Hi Langtuhanoi, Welcome on board!  Thanks for your interest in Lenovo Thinkpad SL400. May i know where are you currently located? Malaysia? Vietnam? If you're in Malaysia, you may visit Lenovo Concept Store that is just newly opened in Low Yat Plaza.  For your information, AP countries (except China) do not have online ordering system available right now. Only certain regions such as US, Canada, UK, Australia and a few more countries have the system available for customers to build and purchase online. In other words, there will be a few specific models available in Malaysia. Currently there is 2743 QNA model in Malaysia and the price is really reasonable. This model has IWS in Malaysia, Vietnam and many other countries. Check it out at this IWS page. Let me know if you're interested. I'll see if the Sales person can help you out with that  Regards,CleoMessage Edited by Cleo_Lenovo on 08-07-2009 04:09 PM

The thread is now "CLOSED", but I thought I'd give an update anyway.
*******************************************************
From 04-2008:

Maximise OS Performance on New Laptop
New Laptop: Gateway MT6705 Cost:$595.00
OS: Vista Home Premium
1.60 GHz, Dual Core Processor
2 gig RAM (Already upgraded to that before anything)

*************************************************************

I returned the GWLT to the dealer and paid to have it wiped clean and loaded with XP Pro, which voided the warranty. Visa was removed. So was a lot of unnecessary stuff.

The result is a very good running laptop with no bloat ware and extra junk. The dealer set it up for maximum performance.

I've used this GWLT for over a year with zero problems, as my main computer, connected to a 22" LCD and two printers.

I had no problems requiring a warranty. I plan on using this laptop a couple more years, at least.

Hello Everyone. I've joined the group as I've just started my own business and I need a website. (oh yes i surely do). I thought someone out there might be able to help.Oddly I kind of understand the technical part of a site build but I don't understand the design element. I have reg the domain name and now need someone to design my corp identity. So the question is: by trade is someone who does corp identity, the same person that 'designs' a website, or is the person who designs the website also the web builder? It's confusing since when you talk to a company about doing the above they talk about 'we' - no idea how many people behind closed doors and their role would be. As a start up I can't afford a company anyway, so would like to use a freelancer - but how many?!I don't want to build from a template so will defo need a designer but I'm so unsure of all their specific roles. Help!!

Answer:web design (not build) help!

you'll find that site designers will also be competent graphic designers too, and they'll offer a corporate identity design service. Not all site designers will do this however, so you'll need to ask individual web designers when you first approach them. Site design has become a good deal more sophisticated than it was years ago, when I first started designing sites for clients. In those days we were expected to do the lot, from concept to completion. Nowadays you'll often find that a designer will come up with the overall concept - layout, colour, style, etc. Then a developer might become involved and handle the functionality, scripts, databases, and so on. I tend to stick to designing now, and use freelancers for the server-side technicalities - it's faster.Shop around, and get different quotes. You'll find that prices will vary considerably, so always ask to see previous work.

 I've had SO many problems with this laptop . Within 5 Months ;
NVIDIA Chip Melted
Motherboard Died
High Res Screen died [I paid extra for the high res]
Software , bloatware , XP incompatibilities with driver problems galore messing up basic things like wireless connection
It is actually NOT a Thinkpad as the name implies either , it is part of the inferior "Idea Pad" platform range .

Had to pay to get dead motherboard , dead Nvidia Chip and dead Screen replaced .

Now I have a low res screen but much worse I have a Bat Sh**t crazy mouse / cursor , which jumps around and right clicks and left clicks and double left clicks without me prompting it at all . A complete mind of it's own .

Actually , as of just now , it has become literally IMPOSSIBLE to use . I literally spent 15 minutes [measured by the time of my last email to a technician] simply trying to cut and past 3 , THREE word documents from my desktop to my External Hard Drive . Couldn't do it .

Geez , there are many other problems .
Total Crap this computer is .
I'm Moving to ASUS next I think , haven't read of any of this sort of junk happening with those , but I don't know ... There are a few options ... Whatever I choose to go with next it can't be any worse than this piece of garbage . No more Lenovo for me .
The only thing this SL500 is good for is throwing out of a window .

Shoddy Shoddy Shoddy workmanship .

Hello.
I'm a network illiterate trying to create a home network with a design like the one in the image. And when I say Home I mean also cheap. Cisco might be the perfect solution for network connectivity and world peace, but I can't afford it.

A, B : RouterB is connected to DSL. Both have wifi enabled and are connected to each other by Ethernet.
#1, #2 : Two PCs, #1 connects via wifi and #2 uses Ethernet. #1 can only use DHCP.
#3, #4 : Two PCs, #4 connects via wifi and #3 uses Ethernet.

My main problem is that the Green group must work always.
Group B can go offline at any given time, but #1 must reliably send data to #2 ALWAYS. I can do that just running this Green group isolated from the Red one ... but that means without internet.
The problem comes when I try to make the Green group have internet access : If I have to disable DHCP in routerA to let RouterB manage that and be able to get internet connection ... and the routerB goes suddenly offline ... then #1 and #2 can't connect, and I can't let that happen.
So ... the way I see it, both groups have to work as independent networks except that Green group must acquire internet connection via RouterB somehow. It would be nice if #1, #2, #3 and #4 could share data, but I'm willing to sacrifice that in order to get a reliable #1 to #2 connection.

Well, thats all. That's my question : how do I make it work ?

Answer:Buy New Mother Board - Laptop IBM Lenovo ThinkPad R60

you can source a new board on ebay, if you are going to source it from Lenovo/IBM directly, the cost will be around 40 to 70% cost of a second hand R61, if you can get it in the first place. So try ebay first and see whether you can get a part.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that display is not working properly in your Lenovo ThinkPad E530c.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power ? remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Try connecting to an external monitor and check if display comes properly in it. Swap the battery and AC adapter with a good known one if you can. Is there a similar display flickering in BIOS screen as well?

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

Hello, I am starting a new job where I will b working from home. Before my orientation, I purchased two monitors for my home office. I am currently at my orientation for this week and was just provided my work laptop (ThinkPad T460). My question is: what docking station or stations are available for me to purchase where I can plug my two monitors into the station and be able to use both the monitors AND laptop at the same time. I am not the most techy person, so you may have to dumb down your responses. I've read several reviews on Lenovo docking stations and some people are saying their monitors will only work with the laptop shut or if the laptop is open then only one of the monitors will work. I want both monitors AND the laptop to be able to be used at the same time. Are you able to point me in the right direction to the right docking station or docking stations that would allow me to accomplish this for my home office? Thank you very much in advance!

Sometimes Windows does not recognize the screen. When I connect the Flatron 795 FT Plus screen to the laptop, the display disappears on my primary screen (the laptop screen), which is to be expected. BUT the Flatron 795 FT Plus does not display the
Windows desktop, or anything at all! To get the Windows desktop back, I have to disconnect the Flatron 795 FT Plus. I have been lucky to get the Flatron 795 FT Plus up and working, but not on the last 10+ Windows sessions.
What is wrong??

Hi, I have a 2010 Lenovo Thinkpad Edge Notebook (NSW DET SCHOOL LAPTOP) and it was unlocked by the tech guy at school when I graduated 18 months ago. Worked perfectly fine until a couple of months ago when it just crashed and wont load past the first page. Have tried several hard resets, etc but no luck. I have important documents on the notebook and I need to get it working again as I have to transfer all my school and work documents to my macbook. I received the notebook from my school about 3 years ago, if that and never had any issues until now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou

Thank you

Finally building my house. I'm trying to decide if it would be smarter to buy an 8 port 10/100/1000 switch and run cat 6 from my utility room to each room then into a hub or if I should go with a 24 port 10/100/1000 switch and make multiple runs to each room.

I'm not looking for anything fancy or real technical. Currently all my needs are connectivity for surfing/gaming. Possibly in the future I will venture into streaming audio and video, NAS and home theater components that are web enabled but right now all I really need is relieable connectivity.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Answer:New house build - Need advice on network design

Home runs are always better. At some point in the future, you may be running video baluns or something other than network across that cat6.

Here is my experience with 3 Y410p's. Through all the troubles, I am wondering whether Y410p has design and/or build quality problems. My son's first Y410p started having SSD errors in less than 1 year after I bought it. The left hinge broke, but that might not be due to bad quality because my son had dropped it before (not broken at that time). I sent it to a local authorized repair center and then back to Lenovo Repair Depot for repair (long story). After 2 months, Lenovo finally admitted they didn't have the parts to repair it. After more persuasion and direct pleads to Customer Relationship department, at the end Lenovo sent me a replacement. Unfortunately that replacement has a cracked screen and dead on arrival. After another 2 weeks, my son received the 2nd replacement. At first we were happy that it was not dead on arrival. However, after 2 months of light use, the screen suddenly failed even though my son are sure he always handled it with care and never dropped it. He sent the laptop back to Lenovo Repair Depot. Now the Repair Depot claimed the screen is cracked even though there is no sign of cracks, and asked for $399 to fix it. I had a Dell laptop lasted 8 years, and I am using a 6-year Asus laptop without problems. Why Lenov's laptops are so easy to fail?

Answer:Horrible design/build quality on Y410p?

I am happy to report that, after conveyed my experiences with those 3 Y410p to a manager at Lenovo support, he authorized to fix my 3rd Y410p's screen without any charge. While the manage didn't agree with me on the bad build quality of Y410p, it was very kind of him to take care of a dissatified customer. Still, I believe Lenovo should give Y410p a stronger plastic cover for its screen so that the LCD panel inside is better protected.

I think the title pretty much sums it up. I see both sides on the forums, but I haven't seen an official answer from Lenovo. So can anyone say officially whether the battery is really meant to be loose or whether the "thermal expansion" explanation is just a post hoc rationalization? I've seen a T510, an x220, and two T430s with the loose batter. The T61 I used didn't have it. I have a hard time believing that loose batteries are a deliberate design decision. It just feels cheap. I've never used a laptop with a loose battery that wasn't a Thinkpad. And I've used some pretty cheap laptops.  In my opinion, the new Dell Latitudes feel like much more solid machines. It's too bad their 14-inch displays have such poor contrast and viewing angles.

Answer:Once and for all--are Thinkpad batteries REALLY loose by design

Are you talking about Ultrabay batteries? Because the main battery is not loos at all.Ultrabay battery , though a bit loose. Though, I would not have noticed it unless I read about it in the forum. I guess I'm not too picky.

Hi folks, My Lenovo thinkpad T60 was running low on battery and before I can plug the AC adatper in the computer abruptly shut down. Since then I am unable to start the laptop. I tried taking the battery and putting it back in but it won't start.  A computer repair person (working from home) took a look at my laptop and said the motherboard is bad. Is it possible that a motherboard can be fried from the battery running out of juice and shutting down abruptly? So now instead of buying a new laptop (which I can't afford) I am trying to find a used motherboard from ebay/craigslist for my laptop. Is all the motherboards on the Lenovo Thinkpad T60 laptops the same? For example if I can locate someone selling their used motherboard (T60 Thinkpad 14 inch) will it be compatible with my computer or do I need the same model # motherboard that was installed in laptop from the factory? My laptop is a TYPE: 2007-46U with Serial # L3-AG159 Please advise, Thank you, Jeff

Answer:Compatible motherboard for my Lenovo Thinkpad T60 laptop - 14 inch screen

Hello,

It could be that the internal battery, which provides power to the BIOS for storing its settings as well as the clock has failed.  These are 3 Volt Lithium coin cells which have a wire harness on them which plugs into the motherboard, not the big battery pack, which plugs into the back of the unit.  The part number for the battery is 02K6572 and instructions on replacing it can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T60.

Good morning, Trying to figur out what to do with my Laptop. Long story short. It ran perfectly fine. I turn it on one morning and I hear laptop running, fans pinning rtc but screen not turning on. I tried pressing buttons, shutting down, tapping on screen, flipping screen, trying to make it brighter. Nothing. I used Mini Display port to see if I can determine if my screen is dead and I plugged it to my external monitor - Nothing. I Disassamble it. Unplugged the power from battery and I ran it on Charger only. Same thing. Any suggestions? If I leave laptop turned on and I shut down the lid, the laptop never shuts itself down. It's running constantly until runs out of power. Motherboard?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad S230u Screen not working Laptop runs

Hi It looks like a hardware problem. It can be focused on the video chipset, which is generally solder to the mainboard, or it can be a display issue. It can be interesting if you can provide the full model number of your Thinkpad so it can be documented on the forum. To try to pin down if is a display issue or it does not boot at all you may ask you. Does it feels/sounds like Windows is loading? Does it do something when you turn it on, HDD spining and HDD reading like normal booting?. If Windows does not seems to be booting I think it may be mainboard. In any of the two possibilities you should check with you local Lenovo Support Center to see if it can be fixed. Let's hope it is under warranty. Sorry for not providing you more feedback. Regards

Answer:lenovo thinkpad L412 blue screen when i move my laptop

I'm not sure, I think the Active Protection System should be the cause for your problems. When you move the computer, the HDD get shocks and Active Protection System stop the drive to protect your HDD. At that time, windows can occurr problems and you will get a bluescreen You can try to change the setting Shock Detection Sensitivitiy to Low or Disable the Active Protection System

Its just a experience sharing message, so that Lenova would rectify it in their future designs. My old W530 used to have the battery compartment below the LCD screen. But in my new P50, battery is moved to the bottom right corner, resting it under ones right palm when we use it. I guess it is done to accomodate the HDMI, LAN and a couple of USB ports behind.I did not find any issue as long as I am running it on battery. But the moment I plug-in my charger it heats up below my right hand. Making it irritating to use.So technically, I am being forced to use external keyboard and mouse now. hmmm...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Summary
I ordered a Thinkpad T420S, I love it, but it came with a serious manufacturing defect in the display and because the wireless card doesn't work well. There's a bright white area just left of center of the display. It's not a pixel problem, it looks like a light behind the screen that's shining through somehow. I called support, they said return it via EasyServ and the display would be replaced and the wireless card could be swapped out for the Intel option (which was a free option when I ordered the device). I didn't hear back for more than a week. I called in, and they say that the repair -on my unused, brand new laptop- would cost more than $700.

The Details
I ordered a laptop on 8 December 2011 through Lenovo's website, order #2J23X1. The display was defective, with a large white area on the screen all the time. The wireless card wouldn't work with most of the networks that I use regularly. I called 800.426.7416 and spoke with Mxxxxx. He recommended that I return the laptop via EasyServ because that would be faster than returning the laptop and then re-ordering the same one. He assured me that the display and wireless card replacement would be no problem. I had no preference besides needed the laptop as soon as possible for my work. If I had been advised to return the laptop at this point, I would not be having any problems right now.

Here's the whole story of what I started trying to do in the thread Have to build a high end server for school.
I was going overboard on the server hardware itself and not concentrating on the overall project.
I'm looking for input on a simple yet efficient network setup here.

You are all employees of a consulting firm called “ITT NETWORK SOLUTIONS." Your firm's
responsibilities include ON-SITE inspections for the planning phase of laying out a network. This
includes determining what type of network would best suit a particular client (peer-to-peer or
client/server), the use of a LAN, MAN, or WAN, which cabling to use, labor costs to build the network, and the software and hardware to purchase.

Your team has been sent to the site of a new business called Mr. Z’s Football Palace. This business is located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The business sells college and professional football-related
merchandise. The business sells to both retail and wholesale customers, so on any given day you will
find customers who just walk in off the street as well as buyers purchasing merchandise for numerous
stores. Mr. Z plans to be involved in Internet sales so his network will need to have Internet
connectivity, as well as their own website. Mr. Z also wants to have his own corporate e-mail server.

This particular establishment includes not only the store, but also the warehouse (in a separate building behind the store). The store itse... Read more

Answer:Network design Project, continued from Have to build a high end server for school.

I'll be on later tonight...but one area I'd look into is the printers. I prefer HP. You'll also usually have different grade printers across your network...based on needs. Some higher end units, some more basic. An office that size..you're bound to have at least big mopier, and several high volume high output duplexing units.

The "software" that will be run is still an unknown..so as of yet..still only a blind stab at the servers, possibility of database engines (SQL for example), special agents for backup of it. That software will be a substantial part of this overall price also...quite possibly over 50 grand for that software alone. Might be an all in one solution (point of sale/inventory/book-keeping).

Take a Thinkpad X200 with trackpoint, thinklight and resize into the dimensions of an Ideapad U10 11" size, 10" or 9" size widescreen.  Design it to be fast, powerful, ultra-long lasting batteries, able to open it fully in any coach class airline seat for a Pacific and Trans-Atlantic flight.  I find that I cannot open the X series Thinkpad X31 fully in a coach seat with the seat in front reclined.  The Thinkpad needs to be small enough to be fully opened while the seat in front fully reclined and I am still able to use the laptop weather on a coach seat of a bus, train, or plane on the tray table, not overheat or feel the bottom or palm rest area to be very warm.  Don't need the Touchpad, but I really want the keyboard and trackpoint to stay with the fingerprint reader, Intel's latest Montevina, rollcage, RJ11, RJ45 port, bluetooth, Wi-Max, 802.11n, eSata, OLED, SSD option, XP Pro option, 3 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI port, in the familiar matt black finish.  And keep the price under US one thousand dollars in order to sell alot of market share.  Need to still make it shorter when opened.

Answer:Design Size Dimension considerations for a near future X series Thinkpad

That is awfully lot of ports to fit in a dimension you are specifying, Txxx series are having problems fitting these ports you are mentioning. In addition powerful and ultralong lasting batteries, means a very big battery. Rollcages??? The small size of X series rules much of the benefits of a roll cage, the role of the roll cage in the larger laptops is to stop the whole laptop flexing when it is open (thus preventing long term damages to the motherboards). The X series having an magnesium casing is enough to prevent the flexing whether it is closed or open. Technology do get cheap over time, but i don't think Lenovo can currently manage to produce something of your specification without having to cut corners (not something we want).

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Dear Lenovo developers, the T440p itself was already a kick in the teeth for customers that expect well-constructed machines for a suitable amount of money. I just like to mention the faulty power supplies (fixed by replacement), faulty system boards after installing Linux (fixed with new BIOS release and replacement of the death T440p), the flickering Problem of the VMM2322 Video-Hub in the docks (firmware update available but even with up to date drivers sometimes not a completely fixed problem). It is well known, that the design of the T440p cooling system is used to its capacity ? and sometimes not sufficient ? to keep the quad-core i7 models from throttling (in our case the i7-4800MQ) when the CPU load is high over a longer amount of time (e.g. video rendering) and ambient temperatures are high or the sun is shining on the machine. But a design flaw of the ThinkPad Ultra Dock makes it even worse! The part of the Dock with the power and eject buttons seals of half of the venting outputs of the T440p cooling system. The T440p is equipped with three ventilation grids on the back and five to the left side. From the five ventilation grids on the left side four are blocked up by the Ultra Dock. I am aware, that inside the dock there is a very small air-passage, but this is blocked by two fences at the inlet, the mechanics inside the dock a fly-screen like construction and again two fences at the outlet. It is obvious, that there will be no air-flow going thr... Read more

Answer:Feedback: ThinkPad Ultra Dock thermal design flaws [T440p]

This is not a new design flaw unfortunately.  My T410 has the exact same issue.  Instead of only 4 of 5 vents blocked, all of the side vents are blocked.   The vents on the T440(s)/450(s) have been moved away from the corner, so the vents are no longer blocked.  Unfortunately, those models only support 15W TDP processors, so they don't really have to worry about heat anyway. Lenovo can keep the dock design, just flip the cooling system to vent out the other side.  Some of the 15" models are set up this way.

Question: Metro Styled Apps

I've been searching for some Metro Styled Apps for Windows 8 [apart from Windows Store) for sometime now and unable to find anything much except Genie Timeline Professional

If anyone of you have stumbled upon more such apps, please list here.

Answer:Metro Styled Apps

Microsoft has made Metro where you have to buy apps through the Windows store, similar to Apple's iOS. The only way you can run Metro apps without downloading them from the Widnwos Store is if you're a developer testing your own app that was developed using Visual Basic 2011 beta.

My network now runs on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, on an active directory domain. I hate how on the modern lock (Vista & 7) you can just click "Switch User", and login to another account. This is very inconvinient for going out of the room for a few minutes as another person could login and "steal the computer from you." Would there be any way (maybe by group policy) to set the lock to the old XP style where only an Administrator or the user themselves can unlock it?

We have released a skin for Classic Shell.

It looks good in Windows 8, much better than default skins. The skins shipping as part of Classic Shell do not match the look of the Windows 7 Start Menu or the style of Windows 8. Many settings also need to be heavily tweaked to get a more closer look. We tried to match the look on Windows 8 while making some changes from the Windows 7 style. For example, the skin has square corners, not rounded corners, like Windows 8 has. Also, because Windows 8 no longer has blur or glow, the glass is replaced by simple transparency, just like the Windows 8 taskbar uses. Semi-transparent Start Menu without blur makes the content behind it much harder to read, so we made the skin with very subtle transparency, that keeps the content behind it readable.

I saw this device and got very interested, might almost say exited.I decided to take a deeper look, and was very disappointed.I saw that the USB port on the tablet, is on the same side with all other connectors. This means that when I connect the tablet to the dock keyboard, this port is blocked, and not accessible. You might think that this, by itself, is not too bad.But - the probelm is - if you use the USB port in tablet mode, and want to dock the device, you would have to disconnect the usb device, dock the tablet, and re-connect the device to the dock. In my opinion, this is very inconvenient, especially to people who use external storage device almost all the time. I would wonder if Lenovo did not see this design flaw, and if they have any plan to change this.

Answer:Lenovo Helix design flaw ?

Ideally, the USB 2.0 port would be on the side....but really not a big deal, as when you dock in the keyboard, you have two USB 3.0 ports.  I don't find it to be an issue...but yes, would prefer it to be on the side anyway.

Are you missing the Classic Start Menu in your new Windows 7 installation? Now you can get it back and enjoy the Aero-Glass look as well.

Before:-
Here is the regular ?Start Menu? on one of our example systems. Organized and nice but it would be nicer to be able to switch back and forth between the regular and classic styles whenever we wanted.

Setup:-

When you download the app it will be in a zip file and once you have unzipped the contents here is what is included. At this point you will need to create a ?Program Files? folder, place the contents inside, and create a convenient shortcut. Now you are ready to have the ?Classic Menu? back.

After:-

As soon as you start the app your menu will be automatically converted over to the classic style. The rounded corners and Aero-Glass effect make it look very nice. And access for the classic style menu is just the same as for the regular style menu (i.e. Windows Key, Ctrl + Esc, or left clicking the mouse button).

At the moment ?drag & drop, add, remove, rename, and sort items? features are not available in Classic Windows Start Menu. You can make these changes in your regular style menu and the changes will be reflected in the classic style menu when you switch back.

A nice built-in trick is the ?Original menu?? listing. Click on it to temporarily view and use the regular menu and then click on the ?Start Menu Orb Icon? to return to the classic style menu.

If you want (or need) to exit the classic sty... Read more

Answer:Aero-Styled Classic Start Menu in Windows 7

Hi Ramesh. Just tried it and it works as advertised. You did not say which program needed to be started but a bit of experimenting found cwsm.exe was the one. It appears to load CWSMHook.exe.

The start menu was rather ugly and hard to read though

Hi guys, it's been 7h since I am trying to downgrade from Win 8 to 7. Everytime I want to install Win 7 it states that the partition is "GPT partition-styled". Yes, I tried other options in the BIOS but same thing. The problem exists for both 32 and 64bit versions.I want to install Win7 without deleting the lenovo recovery partition, so OneKeyRecovery will not be affected. Since there are Win7 drivers out on the chinese Lenovo site, there has to be a way to run it. Thanks for your help

Answer:Y500 fails on installing Windows 7, GPT partition-styled..

You will need to repartition your hdd fully which would result in data loss which include the recovery partition, the c drive. the d drive and other drives. However i did find i guide on changing gpt to mbr without data loss but i cannot assure after installing windows 7 even without changing the partition type, one key recovery would work, so do it on your own riskhttps://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDMQtwIwAA&url=http%3...

I am working on a class project that involves an industry partner.  Part of our task is to design a case for the Lenovo Yoga 720-15IKB, but it is very hard to do so without both a physical copy of the computer or a CAD drawing.  Is there anyway to get a CAD model to build the case off of?  If so who should I contact/what is the procedure for acquiring it.

Hello fellow Lenovo users, i will start by saying having been a Lenovo brand user since my X41 in 2006 and having purchased over 8 laptops from the brand based on the rich experiences i have had over the years i am really disapointed at my Y510p i purchased a few years ago. After ownership of 6months i started to notice the screen would flicker as stated by hundreds of other owners.(just type Y510p screen flicker into youtube and see for yourself) I am sure this issue is not new to you  and there are many posts about this. After contact with customer services who constantly tell me it is driver/software related, which it clearly is not i would like to ask why such a prestigious brand such as Lenovo will not admit that this model was shipped with a design fault? I understand that there would be expense involved but after being an avid fan of Lenovo for over 15 years and having purchased over 13 products from tablets for my kids to phones for my wife and the new laptop i buy every 2 years for work, this is small fry. I can never buy another machine from you again now as i have lost all faith in your design/testing and the lack of willingness to accept liability when so many units have the issue makes me sad. This has become a bit of a rant, which i know is not what he forum is about but i feel people should know all the details about a company ethos before they spend their hard earned money on a sub standard machine. (at least in the Y510p)&nb... Read more

Hello, We have a problem with 2 laptops (ThinkPad X270) that "freeze" on the LENOVO logo when using Lenovo Ultra Dock with monitor Dell UZ2715H.Display Dell is plugged by Display port ports and one USB 3.0 (9 pin - used for display integrated webcam) connected to ThinkPad dock. When notebook turned ON with connected USB 3.0, computer freeze on LENOVO logo (To interrupt normal startup, press Enter) and work only when USB 3.0 disconected, or turned OFF and again Turned ON. Firmware on Dock is 2.33.000 Any suggestion?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Ultra (Pro) Dock + ThinkPad X270 (20K6) + Dell UZ2715H

I am just going to guess that computer is trying to boot via USB, so you might try changing the boot order in the BIOS so that Windows Boot Manager or the HD is first.

So I got myself the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 the other day, specific model being "431929G", along with it I got myself a 9-cell battery instead of the included 6-cell as well as this additional "slice battery" solutions which you attach at the bottom of the computer using the docking port it seems? The box which this slice battery came in was marked model 57Y4545, the piece of battery inside however says FRU: 42T4739? I guess and hope it's the same thing?  It does attach to the bottom of my W510 without any issues whatsoever, I lock it in place so I get that green indicator which should mean it's supposed to function? But it doesn't.. ThinkVantage Power Manager do pick up the battery but it's just standing there at 12% battery with no activity? Even after the main 9-cell is fully charged it wont start to charge the slice battery? I did even remove the main 9-cell in order to see whether or not that would change anything, but it didn't? And if I remove the power cord when running only the slice battery the W510 will just drop dead? So it's not charging, neither is it providing my W510 with any more battery life? It just sits the with 12% battery with no activity whatsoever, no charging or usage at all?

Answer:ThinkPad Battery 27++ (9cell) 57Y4545 wont work with my Lenovo ThinkPad W510?

Are you sure you're running the latest power manager? I.e., have you updated all the system drivers, os drivers, bios, etc.?

I have a ThinkPad W520-4282. I want to use a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170W) [pn 433830U] at work and a Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator with Digital Video [0A33942] at home.I did not have to install any drivers for the Mini Dock and it worked just fine driving an external monitor. After installing the driver for the Port Replicator, I could no longer drive the external monitor when attached to the mini dock or the VGA+ video port on the ThinkPad.I played with a lot of things to fix the situation and nothing worked. I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. In fact the laptop did not even recognize that an external monitor was attached.Later I found using the Device Manager that the NVIDIA Qadro 1000M display adapter was disabled, proabably during installation of the Port Replicator driver. Once I enabled that, I could drive an external monitor again. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Will I be able to use the Port Replicator if I install the driver again?

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

that's rather unfortunate.   if you're still under warranty then this can be fixed by service.

if your system is out of warranty or you want to repair it on your own then you can find new hinges for the S10 here: http://www.lenovospareparts.com/All_c_108-2-0.html   part numbers 31035691 (right) or 31035692 (left) are what you'd need.

Hallo!

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Bluetooth Laser Mouse hakt und ruckelt seit Creators Update am Thinkpad P70 ...

I got the same problem.... But first let me translate this for everybody here.  My P70 (or in my case P71) has a problem to keep the connection estimated between the Lenovo mouse and my Laptop. Got the current driver installed.  The German guy above me got the same issue after the creators update.   I set everything Bluetooth related in Device Manager up to NOT let windows turn of the device to save power.  The mouse cuts out for 5 sec and comes back on. If you turn the mouse upside down during that time I noticed that the battery led toggles on and off. So it reboots. So I assume it's driver related to because it worked perfectly fine before on the L530 guys machine.

trying to decide between the T540P/T550 and W541/W550s..... it will be for school and would like to have a 5th gen i series CPU but that's not top priority as other specs are the deciding factor for me. ether one needs dedicated graphics and 16 or 32 gb of ram with windows 7 and a 3K display.... do I really need an i7 for graphics and computer service/IT? what do you recommend?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T540P/T440P vs Thinkpad W541/W550s

They are all good machines.  First thing I would say is that I would highly suggest sticking to the newer models that have physical trackpoint buttons above the touchpad instead of the large clickpad (e.g. the T540p).  Even if you only use the touchpad, the newer one is significantly better.  I have a T440s myself and actually replaced the original clickpad with the one from the newer model because the original was so terrible. You also need to think about whether you need a dedicated Quadro GPU or not.  This would be the main difference between the T and W series.  For heavy graphics work, the W series is the better option whereas the T series is designed for more business-oriented workloads. You then really have the slightly tricky decision for the CPU.  Currently Intel have not released full power Broadwell (5th gen) CPUs.  This means that the T550 and W550s have the 5th generation, low voltage CPUs.  While these are still good chips and will certainly improve battery life, they will be slightly less powerful than the full power counterparts and also don't have quad core options (they are all dual core with hyperthreading).  If you want a full power/quad core chip, you would need to then go for the W541, however this does mean you are getting a slightly older Haswell chip.  Whether this bothers you is really up to you.Whatever you do, also ensure that you get an IPS screen - The ThinkPad IPS screens are fantastic, the TN... OfficeTalk
A cross between Twitter and Yammer

Ever wish you could share information broadly within your organization without emailing everyone? Ever wish you could keep the pulse of what people in your organization think is interesting? Microblogging has that potential. OfficeTalk is a concept test to explore the value of microblogging in the enterprise. OfficeTalk is deployed internally at Microsoft and has seen over 10,000 visitors and hundreds of messages posted daily. We're now making OfficeTalk available to a few customers in a small pilot test. Because this is an early-stage concept, the OfficeTalk microblogging experience itself looks very similar to other well-known services. The key difference is that the enterprise owns the data since the OfficeTalk server is hosted in the customer?s organization. We will be releasing updates periodically to test more of the ideas we're thinking about. Stay tuned!
OfficeTalk is in a limited private pilot for research purposes for now. If you'd like your firm to be involved in the pilot and are willing to participate in the user research, let us know. Since this is a research project, only a very small number of pilots will be considered.

Question: Laptop Design

Hey everyone,
I have not been a member of this forum for very long so I do not know for sure if I am posting this in the correct section, or if a similar idea has been or should be proposed. Anyway here is what I thought of:

So recently I was sitting around considering random things like I normally do during my free time, and I had an idea. I've always had an interest in computer technology, and entrepreneurship. Because of this I've been wanting to design a laptop for a while. I know that there is no way to out-compete the big laptop companies in any way at what they have been doing, but I know a lot of people who really enjoy customizing and modifying their laptops, but that is a made significantly more difficult by the design.
Essentially what I want to do is create a laptop system that is completely modular so that any of the internal or external components(outer shell, processor, hard drive, trackpad, screen, anything else you could possibly want to change) can be easily taken apart and swapped out. I also think that it needs to be aesthetically elegant and simple once fully assembled.
The reason that I want to post on this forum, is that I am not capable of this myself. I have built and repaired a couple desktop pcs, and I have a basic understanding of how computers work, but I have no advanced expertise or resources necessary to manufacture anything.
I think that it could be very worthwile to embark on this project, and what I am hoping to find... Read more

Answer:Laptop Design

Nearly 90% of a laptop, save the CPU, RAM, HDD, ODD, or mini-PCI cards, are integrated. You would need to know a lot about mechanics before you can even start using removable media.

IMO, you won't get very far, and will probably waste a lot of money doing it.
