renamed to TIF now can't read jpeg!

Question: renamed to TIF now can't read jpeg!

I was trying to send a fax with a jpeg file attached, the fax software wouldn't accept it so I renamed the jpeg a .tif now when I open it in ACDsee I get a blank screen, in properties it says its a jpeg with 495 kb. I went back and renamed it a jpg, but that didn't help! I tried to then open it in photoshop and got an error saying "unexpected end-of-file". I suppose I corrupted it somehow. Any way to fix it?

Preferred Solution: renamed to TIF now can't read jpeg!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: renamed to TIF now can't read jpeg!

Right-click on the file in ACDsee and selecy "convert". You can then make it a .JPG again, or PCX, or BMP. This should restore the end of file marker...

I gotta be missing something basic, but this is just a real nuisance for me. Would appreciate any thoughts. Software is XP SP3.

I have been using XP to view/edit several subfolders of jpegs stored in a Kodaks Folder. I prefer to use the "filmstrip view". I am able to rename file name from something like 101_2900 to kidname whatever, but the new name never appears onscreen unless I either force a F5 screen refresh or back out and re-enter the file folder. I can probably edit photo names in Corel Paint Shop Pro or another program, but this is just driving me nuts.

Sometimes when I turn on the computer and decide to rename files, the new names appear immediately without refreshes, ect. Just wonder if I am missing a file property setting or something basic that I haven't noticed.

Thanks,

I received a couple of JPEG images in an e-mail attachment that I saved in My Documents. When I tried to rename these files (change the file name extension), I got a warning saying that a change of name might make the file unusable. Is there a way round this which will allow me to rename the files and open them immediately with a double or a right click ?

Answer:Opening a renamed JPEG file extension

Why do you want to change the file extension? You can rename the first part (eg. plants.jpg to flowers.jpg) but it's best to leave the extension alone.

Recently I acquired an LCD multimedia display with built in jpeg reader. I used the flash card with jpeg images on it, from my camera, to test it and the display's reader worked fine. Then I downloaded jpeg's from my computer onto the same flash card and tried to view them and could not. I then put the card into the camera and it would not recognize those jpeg's either, only the images made by the camera. Both would, however, open another jpeg image made by an earlier camera. All the images work fine when viewed on the computer and I cannot tell them apart by any means that I know of to get info on them. I have reformatted some to no avail. I also downloaded images directly from the web and tried them, same problem - once on the flash card, neither camera or the display's reader sees them. Since I have always gone the other way, viewing and reviewing photo images after loading them onto my hard-drive, this problem is perplexing and, so far, I haven't run across it in on-line resources. Any
insight on this would be appreciated.

Answer:external jpeg viewer won't read some jpeg's

With reverse viewing on a camera, the resolution and file naming structure and location (folder on the card) usually has to be exact or the camera will ignore the image.

Unsure about the LCD display, but could be a resolution limitation.

I can't read some jpeg files on my laptop (Windows XP) from an external hard drive while i can read them on another computer (Vista and Windows XP). This is a recent problem, since last week end, after replugging the external HD, only some of the .jpeg file are accessible and can be visualized. Other in different directories can't be readen. If i plug the same HD to another computer, the jpeg file that were visible in the first computer can't be readen, while i can access to the one that were not previously visible.I would appreciate any help.

Answer:Can't read some .jpeg file on an external HD

The external drive requires that the USB port you plug it into can supply 500ma, and even if it can it may not read properly in all USB ports - e.g. a port in an external hub. There are lots of laptops that can't supply 500ma per port when more than one USB device is plugged into the ports built into it - it can only supply 500ma total for all the ports, or for a pair of ports - if you plug in only the external drive it may read fine, or you may need to plug it into two USB ports via a USB Y cord.Troubleshooting USB device problems including for flash drives, external drives, memory cards.See Response 1:http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...

I have been given a selection of images on a CD-R to prepare for a forthcoming slide show. Some of which needed work done to them. I loaded the images from the CD into my computer and proceeded to work those that needed it in PSP8. The show needed then to be transferred to a flash card to view the show on TV via an image viewer[AverFotoPlay] To do this I ran them through XATSHOW - Standard to regain the camera XIF attributes where those that have been edited would have lost them. Part way through the copy process several [unedited] images threw up as 'Read Only' - With a Window denial message' and will not transfer . It turns out that of the 80 or so images all those after 57 are affected. Looking at the properties, of such an image , the read only box remained empty. The strange thing about this is as mentioned - they copied off CD into my machine OK and the modified set Burned to a new CD-R OK.They have also copied to a Zip So what is XAT seeing or not as the case may be? And what can be done to get round the problem So far I have tried ticking the Read only box, then unticking it and clicking on apply. - No Joy there I have tried giving a new name and using save as -no joy there either. I have also in Irfanview- converted a sample to BITMAP saving as to a new loctation then converting back to JPEG. have tried also tranferring the images 'straight' without goinf through XAT.Still the error massages come up. Answer:Phantom Read Only Jpeg Files

Jack as I understand things AverFotoPlay will play jpgfrom any camera as a slideshow, so why bother putting them through xatshow. Also once the exif has been stripped from an image file nothing can replace it, so I fail to see what you mean.Edit your images in PSP8 then transfer them directly to a flash card, AverFotoPlay should do the rest.

Hi,
The JPEG files/pictures that I scanned in from slides on my older XP computer won't open under my newer computer running Windows Photo Gallery. In fact it hangs the computer when I try to read or open the file. I am able to read files from a CD that I created from a digital camera on the older computer. Therefore I know that it isn't the old CD drive that is incompatible with the new system. The CDs read fine on the older computer. When I try to import the pictures it says no new pictures or videos are found on this device. Please send me some words of wisdom and know how.
Thanx

I am not very computer savvy and ended up deleting all my pictures of my newborn child. I purchased a program to recover my files and now when I try to open the pictures it says either the file was damaged or corrupted, that it is unable to read file form, or that I do not have a suitable graphics importer. I was told that the pics are in a temporary file? I've tried to open them through windows photo and kodak easyshare. If someone knows how to fix this, please help. I am desperate.

Answer:Recovered pics after deleting and now unable to read jpeg

Hi. . .

I need some additional information, please:

1. How did you originally delete the files (via "Delete" on right-click in Windows Explorer)?
2. Did you look in the Recycle Bin?
3. What recovery program did you use?
4. Why do you believe they are in a temporary folder?
5. Do you know the name of the temp folder?
6. What drive are/were they on (e.g., drive c: - Pictures folder, external hard drive, DVD, etc...)?
7. Is the file extension (the end of the file name) .jpeg, .jpg, etc...?
8. How many pictures (approx) are you looking for?
9. Is every one corrupted?

Thanks.

Answer:external HD got renamed and cannot be renamed back

It's just a thought, but try viewing hidden & system files to see if there's anything fishy about the drive. Don't panic when you see stuff that you didn't know was there, but if you do see any system files on the root of the drive let us know what they are. Especially if you happen to find a file called "autorun".

Howdy,

My system runs XP off a 250gb SATA drive, and I recently put in an old IDE to see what was on it.

It turned out an old XP install was on it, and then my system said, "You've installed new hardware, you must reboot... blahblahblah". When I did, I noticed that there were svc errors everywhere, and the system was slow, so I took the IDE out of the system.

I booted back up and tried to login, and it logged me out again straight away, so I goggled that and tried a few things, but then I noticed that after booting with the old drive back in there, that the new C drive was the IDE and the SATA was D, but the system was definetly booting off the SATA.

Somehow/why/wtf windows has decided to be D drive and not change all the registry settings to compensate for it.

Repair install didn't help me, loading hives and changing d: to c: via BartPE didn't help me...

Is there anything that I could('ve) do(ne), as I've currently ghosted to a spare drive and re-installing now just incase there is no hope??

Thanks all,
David

I'm not too sure of how to turn the behaviour off, because this is condired to be a "feature" of the whole virtual folder solution. For example, I redirected "My Documents" to point to "F:\Documents", but when I go to F:, I see "My Documents".

The folder name hasn't changed, it's just displayed that way.

One solution that you can try is to create 3 folders:D:\User 1
D:\User 2
D:\User 3
And then in each, create a "Documents" folder (or "Pictures", "Videos", etc...):D:\User 1\Documents
D:\User 2\Documents
D:\User 3\Documents
And then redirect the "My Documents" folder for each user into the relevant location.

I'd also recommend creating each "User X" folder from within the relevant user profile, so that pe... Read more

When I rip music files, I usually rename them and put them in a different folder. But sometimes, seemingly at random, some of them will be renamed and put in a folder and subfolder with the album name and artist, as if they had just been ripped, and they are also renamed to what they were when they were just ripped. The odd thing is, only certainly ones from the album are renamed and moved, while others are left just as they were. This is something that seems to happen completely at random and not all that often, but it's a bit annoying when it does. I think it may have something to do with Windows Media Player, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any idea what might be causing it, or how to stop it?

Somewhere along, the My Documents folder has gotten half way renamed.....

Here's what I mean.

On the desktop, it reads as My Documents

In the C:/ Drive, it's My Documents

When I open the folder, the title bar of the screen says n n cmm

In the Start Menu, it says n n cmm

If you're in the Desktop in Windows Explorer, on the left hand side under places, it's listed as n n cmm

When I go to the properties for any of these options, the file path is correct.

Is there anything I can do to get the n n cmm changed back to say My Documents?

Thanks

I think I may have a virus of some sort, because all of my files have been renamed with the following extension after all of them: .nowodfk

All word, excel, access, photos and pdf files extensions have this extension after them.  Is there a way to reverse this?  Any way to detect the virus, if any exist.  I have McAfee installed and even for a time I could not open it or Internet Explorer.

Hello,It looks like you are infected with CTB-Locker. Please read the information for this ransomware below. The newest variants of CTB-Locker typically encrypt all data files and rename them as a file with a 6-7 length extension with random characters. The newer variants also do not always leave a ransom note if the malware fails to change the background, like it generally does. Compounding matters, the newer CTB-Locker infection has been seen in combination with KEYHolder, TorrentLocker (fake Cryptolocker) or CryptoWall ransomware. Unfortunately, there is still no known method of decrypting your files without paying the ransom and with dual infections, that means paying both ransoms.A repository of all current knowledge regarding this infection is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this tutorial: CTB Locker and Critroni Ransomware Information Guide and FAQThere is also an ongoing discussion in this topic: CTB Locker or DecryptAllFiles.txt Encrypting Ransomware Support & Discussion. If you have any questions it is best to post them in the discussion topic. To avoid confusion I have asked a Moderator to close this topic.Regards,Alex

I have just downloaded the internet browser Opera and burned it on to CD...however when i went to open the file on the CD a message came up saying

"the installation had been renamed to OPERA.EXE. Please rename to some other name and restart the installation"

Any suggestions as to what I might do without waiting 1hr20 to download program again??

Answer:installation renamed???

load the file onto your HDD, and rename it to someting else (xopera.exe as an example).

It will be complaining because when it installs, it will create a file called "opera.exe" which cannot be done if the same named install file is in the same directory.

Hello All,
When I insert a USB Flash Drive I normally see the device name show up in my file explorer (I use xplorer², but it happens with Windows File Explorer equally).
In the past, and despite naming the device through its Property's sheet, I'd occasionally get a flash drive without its user name, but with its Hardware ID, i.e., "Removable Disk (drv letter)". All I'd have to do is execute a "rename" command or rename it in its Property's sheet, and the device would keep its name in the future.
Recently, this has gotten much worse:
1. The external USB enclosed hard drive is now referred to as "Local Disk (drv letter)".
2. Only the Boot Drive (C:\) has retained its user name, so far.
3. No amount of renaming the drives, whether the external or any of my flash drives, results in the drive changing its designation back to the user-given name.
4. I've run SFC and on my main desktop computer the results are: found some corrupted files system, repair successful, while on the x60 ultrabook the results are: found some corrupted file system, but unable to correct them.
5. Following the 'unable to correct' system message, I did a complete uninstall and then using a good Refurbished System DVD, reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7.
Prior to loading any programs I attempted to plug-in and then rename my local disk and a removable drive, both operations failed. In fact the only drive I can rename is my C:\ (boot drive), though when I look for the other drives at a '... Read more

Hi all, hope someone could help me out. I'm new here and hope that efforts will be fruitful, so thank you in advance! so on to my problem:

I have an external 40gb 2.5" USB drive which I use to backup and store some movies and data. Recently I encountered a huge problem. Some of my folders containing documents were instantly renamed with weird characters, ASCII looking characters actually. I'm not sure if this is due to some malware, but I've read some posts that say that it is caused by some malware and have gone through the whole process of trying to remove it with no evident success. I cannot access these folders, and I really need the documents in those folders. When I click some of the folders it says "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect" and in other's it says that i should check if the drive or network is connected. However, most of my shows or movies that I store there are accessible. Only the essential documents and files seem to be blocked or inaccessible/unreadable.

So if someone knows a solution to this, could you please help me out. Thank you very much...

Question: A Renamed File

I accidentally renamed a .CBR file a .ZIP. Naturally enough my computer changed the File image to a zipped one .ZIP disappeared from the file name.
How do I change the File back to .CBR ??
(When I right click and go to rename I end up with a .CBR but the computer seems to thinks its part of regular name XXX.CBR.ZIP

(Windows XP)

Any Help would be appreciated!

Answer:A Renamed File

In any folder click tools, folder options, and on the view tab uncheck the 'hide file extensions for known types' box. This will show complete file name. Now rename in the usual way and go back and re-check that box when you're done.

Answer:Files being renamed to .EXE~

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

You have two anti-virus programs running, which will cause trouble. Uninstall one of them.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I have 3 drives listed under "My Computer" > "Devices with Removable Storage". They are:3 1/2 Floppy [A:], CD-RW [D:] and DVD-RW [E:].They all work as they should - BUT - when I use a Philips DVD+RW disc in the DVD drive it changes the name from DVD-RW [E:] to simply CD-Drive [E:].The Windows drive identity stays like that until I re-boot then it goes back to DVD-RW [E:].Nero has it listed correctly and it works OK but is this an OS registry problem or is there something on the DVD disc which is doing it?I have erased the disc a couple of times using Nero but the renaming continues.Any ideas?

Help please!"My Documents" folder in the Start Menu (XP SP2) has apparently renamed itself spontaneously to "[pbg]+". I can recall nothing that I have done that could have caused this. Could anyone please offer a possible explanation as to why this has happened and also confirm that if I correct it using the normal re-name facility in doing so I will not create other difficulties.(Geriatric on steep learning curve but "becoming" computer (il)literate).Thankyou in anticipation.

I was trying to clean up my drive letters because I have too many devices attached and sometimes get an error of no available drive letter when I use my jump drive.
Unfortunately, I did this late at night and did not pay enough attention to what I was doing. I thought I was renaming one of the other drives, but accidentally renamed c: to y:
Now, of course, Windows won't boot. I've tried restoring it to the last known good configuration, but that didn't work. I've also tried booting it up through Recovery Console on a CD - again nothing. Windows will just load to the beginning screen, then sit there.
My thought was to boot to a dos command prompt, then rename the hard drive back to c: Is this the best solution? And how do I boot to a command prompt. I don't get that option with F2, F8 or F12, or when using the restore CD.

Answer:Accidentally renamed c:

When in disk management, it wont allow you to rename that drive

My brother could not see his external hard drive on my computer, so he did some research and found that he needed to assign it an available partition...whilst doing this, he assigned my C: drive the letter M...now, everything would not work...said it was looking for C:blah\blah\blah...etc.... so i used the old school method of reboot to fix...I turned off the computer and now it will not even startup. I get a blue screen the say windows. any ideas? I have looked and have not found a boot disk. someone please help.

thanks

brad

Answer:Computer Will Not Start (renamed C: To M:)

Well...XP won't allow anyone to assign a different drive letter to a C: (system/boot) partition, so I'm curious as to how your brother managed to do this.

Maybe you need to tell your brother to unfix it whatever he did.

I have no idea what's going on. I noticed the problem when shortcut icons to some programs stopped displaying correctly. Then I found out that these programs were renamed at least exe and dll files, the remaining files were deleted.
The problem affected one drive partially. Mainly program files and program files x86 folders, and only first half of the applications there. At the moment it seems to have stopped spreading.
I cut off the internet and closed all the programs that used disc, including explorer. I am on Windows 8.1.
Here's the picture of how the affected programs look like.
I'm not certain if it's a virus or some malfunction.
There are three unusual things that happened today:
1. Windows prompt me to install 10 with a new message and after not bothering me for weeks.
2. Wps office update notification appeared. First time and I haven't used it twice. I closed it.
3. Chrome had weird error. No new tabs could be opened and it suggested I should free memory up by closing tabs. There were enough memory BTW. I closed it and couldn't restart, the shortcut icon got broken, it was affected. Had to reinstall.

First thought was that all this mess was caused by Chrome auto update went wrong. It doesn't convince me though.

After my computer locked up I rebooted and a pop-up said my personal settings were corrupted.  When it restarted it was as if I had just loaded the operating system.  My old personal settings is still there but it was renamed to "Ed1.bak" and the settings was replaced by"Ed".  I can't delete or rename the "Ed" file.  How can I get the "Ed1.bak" back to "Ed" and gett my setting sback???  I'm using Windows 2000.

Answer:Personal settings renamed???!!!

OK, I logged off and logged back in as Administrator.  I was then able to delete the "ed" file and rename the "Ed1.bak" to "Ed", however, when I logged back in the same pop-up came up saying my settings were corrupted and renamed the folder back to .bak.  I can open the file and all my settings look like they're ok but I can't use it.  Something changed in the registry maybe?

I am using windows 7 professional 32bit. I have my pendrive named 'jerry' . when i connect any pendrive to my computer it gets renamed automatically to 'JERRY'. I dont know why this happens ..Can anyone suggest me a solution ?

Answer:Pendrive getting renamed automatically

Windows is probably getting "confused"

I would try this first.

Unplug the AC adapter from your laptop.

Remove the battery pack.

Press the power button for a few seconds to discharge anything that remains charged.

Wait a few minutes, connect the battery pack, ac adapter and then boot your laptop

If that didn't resolve the problem,

Try drive cleanup. USB drive or flash problems? How to cleanup and remove old USB storage drivers - TechSpot OpenBoards

After the drive/r cleanup, each time you plug in a new USB device the driver will be installed afresh. Give them a distinct Volume Label and then check whether it sticks when you unplug and replug them.

If this also does not fix the problem then ........ I have to scratch my head further.

Our PC changed drive letters for some strange reason, then none of our boys' programs would run as it would look for the c: drive which for some reason was now the D: drive. Had a supposed knowledgeable person over yesterday to try to remedy this problem and he renamed the drives in regedit. Now it doesn't get past a black screen. The lights on the box come on and it goes to the CD drive, goes to the floppy drive, but then winds down and the monitor never turns on. Please tell me this is an easy fix as I have no money to fix this right now! He wants to come bcak tonight to try to remedy this new problem, but would rather not let him at it again. I am some what knowledgeable myself with computers, and tried the Win XP CD to see if it would load- to no avail.

For the second time now I renamed a folder and it vanished completely. To do the rename I clicked on the parent directory in the left pane of Windows Explorer then renamed the folder in the right pane.

After it vanished I did a refresh, ran CHKDSK (after reboot) etc. but it did not find it.

The strange thing is if I run a DOS command prompt and do a DIR it is still there (under the old name). I can read the contents and copy them elsewhere, but no matter what I do the folder does not show up in Windows Explorer, either under the new or the old name.

The old folder was called Public Building and I simply tried to rename it to Public Buildings.

I am running Vista Home Premium.

Did some more searching. This gets very murky!

As an experiment I tried creating a new folder via Windows Explorer called Public Buildings. It worked. I then tried to create a new folder called Public Building. It came up with an error saying a folder called Pictures already exists. Do you want to merge it or something.

I checked the directory listing again and sure enough, there is a folder sitting there called Pictures and it is my old "Public Building" folder.

That triggered the old brain cells. Some time ago I changed the default My Pictures folder via Regedit to be that Public Buildings folder above, using the registry hack documented at http://www.justanswer.com/computer/2...g-default.html

Answer:Renamed Folder Disappears

That triggered the old brain cells. Some time ago I changed the default My Pictures folder via Regedit to be that Public Buildings folder above, using the registry hack documented at http://www.justanswer.com/computer/2...g-default.html

ie. I changed the My Pictures value in HKeyCurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
to that directory.

So there is obviously something that does not like that folder being renamed, or gets confused and makes the new name "Pictures" instead of what I tried to use. Is it a bug in Vista or a "design feature"?

You shouldn't change the registry unless you know what your doing.

Have you tried changing the reg back?

I recently had a virus on my computer and decided to just reinstall the OS from top as I didnt have anything vitally important anymore. My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone.

When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer.

However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

Help?

Answer:C: Drive renamed, cant rename it to anything else.

It may not solve the problem, but it's worth a try.

to eliminate the second iTunes icon that opens on the taskbar but then I realized doing so leaves me with the icon labeled "iTunes(2)". Is there a way to rename it?

Answer:Can icon in taskbar be renamed?

if you can find itunes (2) in the start menu right clicking it should give you the option to rename.
failing that you could uninstall itunes and reinstall it with the new updates and you will only have one entry.

I'm having a problem with OE continually trying to compact files. I have 2 identities. In an attempt to figure out which identity had the problem, to stop one of them from running, I changed the file ending on the dbx files so OE wouldn't see them. Eliminating those dbx files seems to have at least temporarily solved the problem, but now I would like to recover the dbx files I renamed, one at a time to discover which of them might be the culprit, and I can't get OE to recognize the files now that I have renamed them once again to DBX. I have rebooted, to no avail. I also tried a system restore, but they did not come back that way either. Any other suggestions?

The computer renamed all my files:

I was using XP on a 20GB (fat32) and my computer crashed. To make a long story short I bought a new drive. Now I?m using XP on a 80 GB drive (NTFS)

I was using a 10 GB drive (fat32) as a backup drive to my 20 GB drive. The computer renamed with letters and symbols all the files. How can I recover or access these files on this drive?

Please take into consideration of my limited knowledge of computers and operating systems when answering my post.

Thank you

Answer:Computer Renamed Files

Does the renaming follow any particular order? (I'm thinking of it being 6 numbers or letters followed by the ~ and then a number).Do they conform to the 8.3 naming convention? 8 figures before the . and 3 figures after it?Maybe a screen shot of a directory listing will help. Open up the directory in question. Then press "Alt" and "PrtScrn" at the same time. Then open Paint and paste it in there, save it and attach it to your next post. I have an external hard drive that was named Local Disk (I), now out of the blue it is named Local Disk (K), I tried to rename it back to I but it won't allow me to do it.
I have no idea how it happened or when it happened, but when I use my Adobe Lightroom it has been storing my images in the I drive but now is storing the catalog data in the K, any software that was referencing the "I" drive is now telling me it cannot find the files because now it is "K" drive.
Is there a way to change the drive name back to Local Disk (I) ?
or does anyone in here that uses Lightroom know how to redirect where it looks for the photos?

Answer:Help! Disc Drive got Renamed Without Me Doing It!

It wasn't renamed; the drive letter was changed. At some point another removable media device was installed and used drive letter I, and now your external drive is using K. It is easy to change drive letters - just use drive management.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit. I have some avi files with messy names, so I renamed them to something more manageable. No problem, when I play them in windows media player it shows the new name in the list pane (on the right). The problem happens when I move the files (before renaming) to a shared folder for streaming to my ps3/xbox 360. Once they have been put in that folder it's like there is some sort of memory on the original file name. I can rename the file to whatever I want, and that name stays, but then when I play it in windows media player or on the ps3/xbox 360 it shows the original (messy) file name. The only solution I have been able to find is to rename the files first, and then drop them into my shared folder. Once they are in the shared folder it is the point of no return and the name they have is the name they keep. I have tried "abcAVI Tag Editor" and that is showing the file name as the title name. So the original file name doesn't appear to be trapped in the tag. I tried moving the files out of the shared folder then renaming.. it worked until I put them back in the shared folder, then it's back to the original name. Do I just need to refresh the shared folder somehow? Any help would be great. Please and thank you.

Answer:Renamed avi file keeps showing old name

Hi,

I recently got hit by a malware wherein all my .jpegs, .docs, .xls, .psds  got a .LOCKED extension. I searched online for a long time and found out that Dr.Web had a free utility to decrypt these files.
So I first ran Windows Safety Scanner. This found 3 threats, 2 of which it removed. Then I tried to run the the Dr.Web utility. I had sent the same file versions in my email, so I had the original versions. But the Dr.Web utility shows me an error saying the files (the old and the new encrypted file) don't match. I need to get my files back soon, as I have a final presentation coming up.
Does anyone know of a way I can decrypt my files?
If there is no other option, I would even consider doing a clean wipe of my OS, and if necessary my whole system (Since I have backups for most of my files). Would that solve my problem?

Sincerely
Ebi

Hello!
I was trying to save a file in Adobe Reader, but typed the filename too fast before the "save as" dialogue box was fully loaded. As you can see below, my stupid document folder got renamed instead to "A". I've been searching and searching, but can't find a way to rename it back to my original username.
Clicking on it still gets me to c:\users\bayzone\ which is good.

Any idea how to solve it?

OK, I've done something really stupid. Via Control panel and in Storage Management I renamed C: to Z: and this has left me with close to zero functionality.

Storage Management no longer work and it is the same with most of the pc.

I can navigate via windows explorer, but the applications cannot be started from there either.

I have not rebooted and trying to restore point does not work.

So I have two questions:
1. Can this be fixed without a reload?
2. If not, is there any way to back to files up (backing up to the cd/dvd doesnt work)?

Thanks
I am very red faced

I was using XP on a 20GB (fat32) and my computer crashed. To make a long story short I bought a new drive. Now I?m using XP on a 80 GB drive (NTFS) I was using a 10 GB drive (fat32) as a backup drive to my 20 GB drive. How can I recover or access these files on this drive? Please take into consideration of my limited knowledge of computers and operating systems when answering my post. I hope this picture is readable.

I recently did a clean install of XP, plugged in my SimpleTech 500GB external hard drive, and my WD Passport, and had trouble getting them to be recognized by my laptop. They then went haywire and I got error messages from both saying they were not formatted, etc. I restarted, installed some more drivers for the hardware in my laptop (including plug and play, the proper version for my chipset), and they finally worked. However, all the folders that were on the disks were renamed, such that a folder named "videos" was renamed "videos.exe", and the original folders were "hidden". I can successfully delete the .exe files, "unhide" the folders and they work fine. But is this something I should be concerned with? Should I backup my files and reformat?

I am using XP SP1 and am fully up to date in terms of windows update, anti virus and zone alarm. Since my return from holiday late last week have had two issues with OE6 which was working fine before I left:

1. All file attachments received are being renamed to lose any spaces: example: a word doc sent from work called "notes for home" will appear as "notesforhome". Also if I then try to save this attachment locally it is being saved as type 'file' when it used to save as type 'word doc' and I have to open the file rename it and save it again to get it as a word doc. This is happening to all attached files regardless of the sender.

2. At the same time [but not sure if this is a connected or separate issue]: I do some work for a charitable organsisation including sending a weekly word doc attachment as a news email to a small list of members using a membership database which has not been upgraded or amended in any way whilst I have been away. This was also working fine before I went but now when I try to send this block email I am getting an error message as follows: 'An error occured while trying to send. Details 451 system unable to respond at this time, please try later'. I have tried this several times over last few days each time with same message appearing .....but I am able to send out individual emails with attachments at any time.

The only things I can think of that might have changed since I got back are:

After a Windows 2000 Professional failure, following Dell's instructions
for recovery, I did a repair/reinstall of OS from their recovery
CD. Computer had 1 large hard drive with 4 partitions created with
Partition Magic 7.0.

Reinstall renamed all the drives - but two of the drives were renamed
"unavailable network drives". They still have their assigned letters,
and they still show up on My Computer, but they are inaccessible.

When Windows starts, it tries to connect to these network drives,
then gives me an error message and asks if I want to continue trying
to connect. Partition Magic does not show these drives at all.

How do I regain access?

yes, there is a way too change the start button text by altering the registry.
There is however a few problems. You can only use up to 5 digits and you have to deal with the regitry. Anyway the following link will give you all the information you need to change the text on the start menu.

Hi, I had a folder named "167". I changed it to "167..." to remind myself there were other folders between that number and the next that I still needed to collect. When I off-clicked into the window after renaming it the folder disappeared. I used the search bar and visually searched through the folder, both with show hidden folders on, but without success. Any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe using extra periods is the proper way of changing the name of a folder. Other than just doing a search folder and going through all of them I don't know of a way of finding that folder.

My computer got infected with some malware that disabled the antivirus and added a .ecc extension to office, pdf, text and image files.
There was no ransom message, just some pornographic images at startup. There was a "syshost.exe" service installed and a program with a random name was running. I cleaned the malware and the antivirus works now, but these files no longer open.
For some files I have the unmodified original. I tried using Panda Ransomware Decrypt to extract the key and restore the files, but it failed.
Is it possible to use files that have the original and encrypted versions to extract information that can decrypt the rest of the files?

Answer:Files encrypted and renamed to .ecc

You are dealing with TeslaCrypt Ransomware. Unlike other ransomware that typically target images, documents, videos, and applications databases, TeslaCrypt also targets over 40 different video game related files. Any files that are encrypted will have the .ecc extension added to the end of the filename. There is an ongoing discussion in this topic: New TeslaCrypt Ransomware sets its scope on video gamersRather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in that topic discussion.ThanksThe BC Staff

If you've changed the extension name (the (normally) 3 characters after the dot in the filename) - then the system will no longer know what program to use to open them. If, sa you original name was aaaaaa.jpg, and you want to change the name to bbbb - then you MUST put bbbb.jpgIt's the (for instance) jpg bit that tells the system what program to use.

A few months back I came to BC for malware detection and removal and was instructed to use ComboFix. I wasn't able to get through the whole process the last time and was left with ComboFix on my system. Just recently my Avira AntiVir detected ComboFix as malware and it hasn't had this problem before.

The automatic scanner reported this:

The file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Keo\Desktop\schrauber.exe'
contained a virus or unwanted program 'TR/ADH.CNQ' [trojan]
Action(s) taken:
The file was moved to the quarantine directory under the name '4f039503.qua'.

Note that schrauber.exe is my renamed ComboFix.

Is this a sign of malware taking advantage of ComboFix on my system?

Will the problem go away if I simply remove ComboFix?

Or should I seek further help in the malware removal forums here on BC?

Update: Apparently Avira completely quarantined ComboFix and removed it from my desktop. Should there be any further problems?

I'm trying to set up some accounts on my XP Pro SP3 system. I have some accounts set up, but wanted to change some names. I know that if I change an account name, the directory name stays the same, and I didn't want to get confused later on if I was ever doing some stuff on a directory level.

I used this page to copy the settings from my account (named "Main") to a new account named "Admin". I had problems getting access to the folder while in the 3rd account, so followed these instructions to gain access. Once I got it copied, I loaded Admin and found it looked exactly like Main, which is what I wanted.

But then, I went back into Main and everything was gone. XP was acting as if it was a brand new account. In Documents and Settings, I found there were now TWO Main accounts. "Main" and "Main.DARKSIDE" (DARKSIDE is the "full computer name" found in System Properties). I can tell by the directory sizes that Main is the fresh, new account I see in my account list and Main.DARKSIDE appears to be my original Main account (being over 6GB in size), which is now absent from the list of available accounts.

I am not sure how my Main got renamed to Main.DARKSIDE. How do I get things set back so that I get my original Main back appearing in the account list? How do I access Main.DARKSIDE again?

Thanks!

I just used Win 7 Backup on my Gateway FX6831 PC to create a second backup, and the backup it created on my external 1TB WD drive had a name of WIN PH.....CDVR, which has become my new computer name on my network. Why would this happen, can I undo it, and how do I prevent it for future backups. My original backup shows up under my original name - Tom-PC. Now since the new backup, which didn't overwrite the previous, this new name is on the network, so associations and sharing from other PC's are all screwed up. Can I get this back to the simple Tom-PC name? The PC now shows a User Profile for the WIN PH.... CDVR name as well.

Can I just delete those two backups, start with a clean external drive (which is now 99% full) and start fresh? My main concern is getting my original PC name back. I tried a system restore but no luck. Thanks for any help.

Have a Netgear wireless modem router and the network and password have been changed again. Used to be 192.168.0.1. Now 192.168.0.2 and the wireless is not discoverable and I can't log into through a browser. Error message that the connection has been terminated.

I ran through the malware removal process about 4 months ago and have changed to Comodo firewall. It seemed to be disabled this morning. Avast boot scan showed corrupted google earth archives.

I know i can hard reset the router, but i seem to have a malware program that is reseting this that the process recommended on this site isn't catching.

Suggestion on how to proceed, as reseting the modem and following the malware process would remove the tracks but not, it seems, the infection?

Since this is your first post, I would assume you ran through the removal process but did not submit any logs to be reviewed by the Malware team unless you used another username. (Which would be kind of a no-no here as only one account should be established.)

rwilles said:

I would run through the removal process again and submit the logs as requested. Malware these days can be very tough to remove as it puts pieces of itself in a lot of different places in the code. Having problems with internet connectivity is becoming more of a problem with the more recent type of infections and can be displayed in many different ways.
Anything that may be suggested to try to fix your problem now would be pretty useless until the malware is removed. If, after running through the process you still have problems with your connection, come back and start a new thread here with the symptoms you have at that time.

Good Luck

Hello,

Awhile back, I set a customized "my documents" folder on a friend's laptop (Win XP Home, sp2), since C: was getting overly full. Recently there was some trouble with the system shutting down, a prefetch error, and the disappearance of documents and photos. Those issues seem to have been resolved, but it looks like at some point the profile directory was renamed from user to something like user-ComputerBrand-2a4ca3... There was also an extensionless file in that directory with the name user, containing what looked like gibberish. Not sure if this has or will cause application trouble, but I left that as is and have returned the laptop for now. Any ideas as to what may have cause this change? And could the 'user' file be a sort of pointer (system-level or otherwise) to the customized documents directory/should it be the same name as the profile folder? Thanks.

Answer:Renamed Profile Directory?

Okay, quick follow-up after talking more with friend. I'm thinking the original profile was corrupted or deleted (address book is missing and Outlook Express lost it's custom folder setting etc.), and presumably Windows generated a new one with the 'user.ComputerBrand-2a4ca3' folder name(?). While leaving what appears to be a sort of template file with the original profile name. I wonder if a system restore would help at this point...

I just installed SP3 via the Windows website. My PC gets to the splash screen and reboots. It won't load the OS, nor will it boot in any other mode. I believe I have found the problem, but don't know of any fix. After building this PC, AMD dual core, and updating with various Windows updates I ran into problems and needed to rename my "C" drive. I named it "F" and use it for the OS and all programs. Since then it's been running fine. I also have 3 other drives, 1 for paging files, and 2 data drives.

During the update process SP3 mysteriously renamed my "F" drive to "C". Now I beleive when it boots the files are mostly all erroneously named, can't find what it needs to and reboots. I guess while examining of all my files SP3 failed to notice they'll all on my "F" drive and assumes everybody uses a "C" drive for the OS.

The "rename" command in recovery console allows you to rename a single file. Also in recovery console and during the install Windows from my XP CD there is no "F" drive only "C". (Yes it does see the other 3 drives.) My feeling is if I reinstall XP pro from the CD over the SP3 on the "C" drive I will run into program funtionality problems with all of my other programs since all of their files reside on (previous) "F" drive.

I can also remove the HD and access it via another PC, but am unaware of any programs that will help to ... Read more

Answer:XP SP3 help needed, renamed drive

FIRSTLY
May I stress that I do not have the CERTAIN correct answer to this.
As I understand the situation - SP3 - if it only sees ONE Windows installation will ONLY install to that installation. If however there was already some exisitng problem with the drive allocation letters, then I suspect, as you say that this is what has occurred.

It seems to me that when you had problems earlier BEFORE the SP3 download and changed your drive letters - you created the problem. Many registry entries were already referenced to C drive and simply changing that to F drive - which presumably you had to do using partition-magic or some similar tool, did NOT change all the registry entries, albeit it may have allowed you to change the drive letter.

As I see the situation you will either have to remove SP3 using Recovery Console as per here.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

I MUST STRESS that I do NOT know if this will be successful.

OR do a system restore using recovery console as per here.
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-x...tml?highlight=system+restore+recovery+console

See post 2 please by Mumbodog - acknowledgement to that post

IF IT WAS ME I would back up everything possible either by taking out the hard drive etc or using Puppy Linux.
May I again stress that I offer the solutions ONLY as to what I would do. I do not have knowledge of the problem in the situation you describe - ie: after the SP3 update and with the original confusion.

Following the recent news of the compagny behind Gator suing everyone that called their product spyware(latest PC Pitstop), they have decided to change the name of Gator entirely. The name is now Claria, so be on the lookout for this piece of nasty software.

This is probably a step to mask the software further as Gator was becoming a rather well known advertisement product, and a increasing amount of people were taking steps against it. You'll find a nice overview of gator history and the article on Cnet

Maybe you find it interesting what kind if informations Gator aka Clara is collecting, so read more. I found the following informations in their privacy policy, which is not easy to find on their website:

The amount of time spent at some Web sites Response to GAIN Ads
Standard web log information (excluding IP Addresses) and system settings
