When clicking volume in WinAmp my wave setting in Volume Ctrl drops.

Question: When clicking volume in WinAmp my wave setting in Volume Ctrl drops.

This on is quite perplexing to me. This is stemming from a volume problem that I had posted before. I have more detail and have narrowed down the problem but not the cause of such. When ever I click the volume control in winamp, not adjust necessarily, just click, my wave setting in my volume control (pannel that comes up by double clicking the speaker in the tray) drops. Of course this affects my overall volume. It is sparatic and does not drop the same amount two times in a row but will drop everytime I click volume in winamp. I am running winXP pro and have not installed so much as an update since the last time this was happening. The only thing I did change is I set up voice recognition in Office XP but I was having this problem before that. I have uninstalled and cleaned out all winamp files and reinstalled. Any suggestions? Winamp is the only player of any kind that this currently happens with.

Also, whenever I am using winamp to play an mp3 or streaming audio and I open another program, any program, or even just minimize/maximize a window, the audio starts cracking. This also has never happend before except of course when there is a heavy load on the system. As I said I am running XP pro, and FYI a Duron 900 cpu and 448MB RAM. As I am having these problems I am using 5% to 10% of my cpu and have 21000k physical memory availible according to task mgr.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: When clicking volume in WinAmp my wave setting in Volume Ctrl drops.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: When clicking volume in WinAmp my wave setting in Volume Ctrl drops.

I did some research at the Winamp message board and came up with this.

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? It's pretty annoying for the music to turn down twice as fast or winamp's volume bar to not even work at all.EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forum

Hello

This all started a few weeks ago around the time when I started using my verizon wireless network card traveling. Not sure if it's related or just coincidence. Also, it started with random audio commercial ad's that were playing although I could find no running process to know where it was coming from.

Then I started getting and still get IE popups, I don't EVER use IE, Firefox is my browser of choice.

I tried everything I knew of to clean my system, and after every attempt I still have problems.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now run MGtools per the below instructions and attach the requested MGlogs.zip file

Hi. I hope the title wasn't too detailed.
I believe I have the same infection as a few other posts I've been seeing around the next the last couple of days.
NOD32 detected a Mebroot Trojan it can't clean in the operating memory, and I believe it's causing my PC's weird behavior.
Every now and then the volume wave drops to 0 (mute), and every now and then IE ad popups appear, even though I am a Firefox user, and I can hear clicking noises in the background every now and then.
I would really appreciate any help I can get removing this. What I fear most is that it will spread to other computers on the network or to my IM/email/FB contacts.

Also, here is a HijackThis log, the pinned guide said I should post this.

Thank you very much to anyone willing to help!

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

OK I've done what the "read & run me first" thread said. Attached are all the log files I got, however when I ran super antispyware it didn't find anything and thus why there isn't a log file for it.

Now to my problem. As in similar threads I started to get the wave volume reset to 0 problem and now and then got popups from internet explorer of varying kinds, like the "internet explorer isn't the default browser" among others. So I started googling for the problem and found this page. After doing what the "read & run me first" thread said I still have the wave volume reset to 0 every couple of mins and also I have an incessant "internet explorer is not currently your default browser" window popping up every couple of seconds, I don't click on it so it disappears for a second and reappears again.

Help....

Answer:Trouble with wave volume

Download bootkit_remover.rar
Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe

NOTE: The Command Prompt window text can be copied to the clip board by right clicking on the top bar of the window and using the Edit commands to Mark, Copy, and Paste.

Last week I started experiencing the same problems as many other posters regarding IE pop-ups and wave volume bottoming out.

I run Win Xp (32bit). I have read all the sticky threads and commenced the entire clean-up process detailed therein save for the step where I toggle System Restore as I wasn't sure if I should toggle it before or after the final MBR check. I have also read all posts regarding similar issues and took it upon myself to down load and run MBR check, the log of which is below.

I believe I am ready to continue with restoring the MBR using the program detailed in threads started by djt283 and others. However, I am posting the attached logs below and hoping for the reassurance of one of your experts as my confidence in the areas of computing only goes so far. If my next steps are already detailed in previous threads, please direct me to them. If I need to take any other steps or any unique steps not already undertaken, your help will be greatly appreciated.

I can bearly hear sound from my computer's speakers even with the main volume
set to maximum. I had a similar problem in Windows XP and fix it by
increasing the wave volume in the volume control. I can't find the wave
volume (just the main volume) in Windows 7 ultimate. Where is it?

If I can increase the wave volume,
then that will fix my problem.
Thank you. And yes, everything is plugged in
and powered up. Thank you.

Answer:Wave volume control...

the simple way is to click on the speaker icon next to the clock.

or control panel >> hardware and sound >> sound >> adjust system volume

depending on your sound card (or chip), you may have an extra set of controls somewhere in your start-menu.

do you know what sound card you have? and are you sure you have the latest drivers downloaded from the manufacturer. sometimes windows update can help find drivers.

Hello, I have been following all the steps that have led me to this point. My computer (Windows XP) seems to have been infected by some sort of Trojan or Malware (I'm not tech savvy, so I apologize if I am using the wrong terms, but definitely at some point a Trojan hit my computer). I have Norton Antivirus and for a little bit it appeared as though it had removed the infection, but the wave volume keeps going to 0. I have tried other solutions, but they have been impermanent. I am writing here because I've seen that the results have been great. I posted the DDS information below and attached the attach file that I was required to do. Thank you to whoever can assist. It is much appreciated.

Hi,
I have been searching the internet for a solution to my problem. I have found nothing so far. Forums have told me to:
1. restart my computer
2. reinstall my audio drivers
3. update my audio drivers
4. replug in my keyboard and mouse
5. and restore windows to a week earlier

None of these solutions have worked for me. Everytime I turn on my computer my sounds works for a few minutes, then my wave slider goes down. When I put it back up it goes down in about 2min. I have realtek hd audio device.

Please help me. Thank you for your time.
Josh

Sorry I was a bit too hasty there. I should have posted some other logs than the HijackThis log. Back in the days the HijackThis was the bomb :-) I will post the logs tomorrow. If any admin sees this you can delete my post and I will make a new tomorrow.
Again thx for your services!

I have a SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card and recently the wave volume control has started to reset itself to zero volume, i.e. silent. It is not muting the wave sound only reducing the volume level to zero. Simply moving the slider to the required level sorts it, as does clicking on the 'default' button. This happens whether the computer is turned off overnight or not. Sometimes all is ok for up to four days and then the level changes after the computer has been left alone for a while.I tried updatimg the drivers but this hasn't made any difference.Anyone any ideas please?

Hey, I've been having problems with my computer lately and happened to stumble across this site where it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. So basically my wave volume keeps muting and it's getting very frustrating. As with the case with others, I keep getting random internet explorer popups even though I'm using firefox. Can this problem be fixed by simply reinstalling windows? If not, any help would be appreciated to help solve this problem. Just tell me what to do.

Thanks,

Chi

Hello Friends,

I have a rather strange problem that i've never seen before and don't suspect it is related to any type of malware. Everytime i reboot/start my computer my wav. volume keeps resetting to zero. I tried to tweak different properties concerning my sound card to no avail. I know, its not a big problem, but after awhile it gets extremely frustrating to have to constantly set my volume. Any suggestions???

after some research i have learned that perhaps this is related to a malware issue...specifically an MBR infection. I have a case/thread open in the malware forum...i will run it by them

I have an issue that seems to be pretty common but am having no luck resolving it. My PC was blue screening every other reboot or so. After running Malaware bytes and SuperAntiSpyware until they came up clean I tried TDSS rootkit removing tool. This seemed to resolve the blue screening problem but now I still the issue of the wave volume muting and IE ads popping up. I have run MBRcheck and it returns the following:

PhysicalDrive0 Known-Bad MBR code detected (Whistler /Black Internet)!

Will overwriting the MBR resolve the issue?

I am running Windows XP SP 3

Hello,I did a quick google search on this topic and it seems to be a fairly common issue. My wave volume will automatically drop to zero every 25 seconds or so, although I don't think the intervals are fixed. I keep GOM player- my primary player- open so I can quickly reset the wave volume. This will usually be accompanied by the computer 'deselecting' out of whatever window I had active. For instance, I frequently am having to click the text box here to continue typing because it keeps deselecting. I will also get random audio ads for miscellaneous products with no window or way to close it. I will also get pop ups from ie even though I don't use ie at all.I will post the DDS now. I was not able to create an "ark.txt" file because every time I ran the GMER scan my computer would get a blue screen error a couple minutes into the scan (and yes I double checked that I had the correct boxes unchecked). I would appreciate any help you can give, this is driving me nuts! My technical knowledge of computers is lacking so please bear that in mind when responding. Help - I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 on Dell PC with IE8. A while back I had a recycler virus which attached itself to my ESET NOD 32 Antivirus 4 and also made my wave bar go to minimum in my volume control sector. I got rid of the problem I thought by finally running Housecall. Everything was fine until now, a month later, and my computer is freezing up and the wave bar is down again. I have to manually hold in the power button to shut down and restart and things are OK for a little while until it locks up again. I ran ESET NOD 32 Antivirus, Malaware, Spybot and Housecall in both reg and safe mode and found no infections, viruses or spyware. Could it be that the recycler virus pops up periodically and how do I get rid of it. I would need to click on a link as I am not computer knowledgable. Thanks.

Question: Winamp Volume

For some reason my Winamp volume started moving up and down. I'm not doing anything on my system and I'll hear it get lower then increase. It had been working fine and all of a sudden changed without me doing anything. I'm using Winamp 5.0rc8 11/19/03. I've got a SB Audigy 2 ZS. I've tried the newest version of Winamp as well and it still didn't work.

Not sure if this is even the correct area to post this!

Answer:Encrypted Volume Check: Volume Info on \\?\Volume{X}Can't read

I'm going to take a guess, please upload a screenshot of the disk manager (Windows Key+R to open the Run dialog, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter).
Posting the actual entry from the Event Viewer can help.

Hi

I've seen many posts of people with the same problem, but it seems like each is solved differently so I post a new thread for this.

I would like to add that the virus has almost taken over my pc, disabled my avast antivirus and the pc crashed every few minutes when run in normal mode, so all the checks were made with the pc on safe mode with networking..

I'm using a Dell inspiron 5100 laptop, pretty old but that's life,
Windows XP, SP3
I have 1 harddrive, run on NFTS.
I have also an external hard drive I'm using for backup of music files and programs, which I have disconnected before running any of the checks.

Thanks for your kind help

Running MGTools I got an error which is due to the .NET platform not being installed on my pc. I hope it didn't sabotage the check as I did not install it. If it is a problem please tell me and I'll install .NET and post another log..

Around 3 days ago, I found out my sound had died. I thought my speakers were broken, but i found out the Wave Slider in Volume Control was slided all the way down. After i fix the problem, every 5 minutes, the Wave Slider will be slided down again. Around that time, I noticed that i hear clicks, but i don't see anything. Also, i hear advertisements and sometimes get pop-ups from internet explorer. I looked in my task manager and i had iexplorer.exe either though i don't have internet explorer running. Even though i deleted the process, it always come back. Therefore, i scanned my system with Combofix and Malwarebytes, but nothing showed up. What should I do? Thanks. The Wave volume keeps muting itself every minute or so. It's been happening for the past few days. I'm not sure when it exactly started. I tried a system restor but all the restore points were gone besides the one from the day before, so i restored it back to that day anyways and nothing changed. I have tried unplugging the interent connection and running antivirus programs in Safe mode without networking as well disabled system restore before doing it so the virus cant reintroduce itself to the system through system restore. I've Ran Maleware Bytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG 12 after doing this. Also lately I've been noticing a lot of windows updates that are prompted for updating & I will look over the names of the updates they say i need and the update them. After I turn my computer off and back on it tells me I need the same exact updates. So I've stopped the updating the last few times by manually stopping them in task manager. I've also used TddsKiller and HitmanPro while in normal Windows mode. I seen in another topic very similar to this one they said to d/l OTC and run that(it worked for the other person), so I downloaded it still to no prevail. I've also noticed when I run the Antivirus/Antimalware programs they are taking very long to run in safe mode. SAS took 7 hours, Malware Bytes took 5 hours, and AVG even took longer. I'm not sure what else to do. I use my computer for work and school and need the sound for many things, It's not only a distraction but it's... Read more

OK, I've been doing some research to find a solution, and it seems this problem is widespread, but I found need someone to personally help me. I ran AVG and Malwarebytes and they found nothing. The "wave" sound setting keeps muting itself every few minutes or so for no reason, and even if I drag it back up after a few minutes it just mutes itself again. Also, I will occasionally hear an ad (that sometimes isn't even in English) in the background of my computer, even if I don't have anything open! I'm not sure what's causing this, and I really don't want to do a system wipe. Please help!

My computer speakers keep cutting out randomly. I have to go into volume control when it does. When I go into volume control, the wave knob is all the way down. It cuts real randomly. I also hear random noises in the background when I have no windows up. Some times I hear the smiley faces noise. You know, the smiley face emotes you see all the time on pop ups. While I type this I just got a pop up and never got one before. I also hear the mouse clicking noise but I'm not clicking anything. You know how if you have firefox up or any program and you click on the desktop. Once you click on the desktop, the firefox blue bar at the top with the minimize, maximize and X button goes gray, as if you clicked on a different program so its not the first program in front. That happens randomly too. Hopefully that made sense.I also tried running glary utilities, malwarebytes, and spybot. Got a few viruses but deleted them and still get the same problems mentioned above. Here are the logs that was asked:*note: for the gmer, I didn't uncheck C: because in the image it wasn't unchecked.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Wayne at 20:30:18.87 on Mon 07/12/2010Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.2180 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_15Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1022.346 [GMT -4:00]AV: McAfee VirusScan *On-access scanning enabled* (Outdated) {84B5EE75-6421-4CDE-A33A-DD43BA9FAD83}FW: McAfee Personal Firewall Plus *enabled* {94894B63-8C7F-4050-BDA4-813CA00DA... Please help. I am using a Dell PC with IE7 and Windows XP Home Edition w/SP3. Something has attacked my wave bar volume contol to go mute and at the same time my eset icon in the taskbar keeps spinning. When this happens the computer freezes and I have to hold the power button in to shut down. I tried Housecall, Malabytes Malaware, Spybot. When I run my ESET NOD32 -it reaches 94% and then a threat window pops up saying here is the list of threats but the window is empty and I can't get rid of it so I have to shut down again. Sytem Restore went through OK to my surprise but I still have the same problem. Is this the iexplore.exe or recycler virus? I know very little about computer programming so if you tell me to do something, please explain it physically, like click on this or that, as I might not understand the terminology. Or maybe I can clink on a link to a free download to get rid of it but I've heard of those downloads having viral files such as something called Combofix. Again, what virus does it soound like I have and what would be the easiest fix for me?. Thanks!

Answer:Wave volume and eset nod 32 virus

Do you still need help with this? If so, please do the following:

Please download DDS by sUBs to your desktop from the following location:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

Double-click the dds.scr file to run the program.

It will automatically run in silent mode and then you will see the following note:

"Two logs shall be created n your Desktop".

The logs will be named dds.txt and attach.txt.

Wait until the logs appear and then copy and paste their contents in your post.
Please download GMER from: http://gmer.net/index.php

Click on the "Download EXE" button and save the randomly named .exe file to your desktop.

Note: You must uninstall any CD Emulation programs that you have before running GMER as they can cause conflicts and give false results.

Double click the GMER .exe file on your desktop to run the tool and it will automatically do a quick scan.

If the tool warns of rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, click on No and make sure the following are unchecked on the right-hand side:

The Wave volume keeps muting itself every minute or so. It's been happening for the past few days. I'm not sure when it exactly started. I tried a system restor but all the restore points were gone besides the one from the day before, so i restored it back to that day anyways and nothing changed. I have tried unplugging the interent connection and running antivirus programs in Safe mode without networking as well disabled safe mode before doing it so the virus cant reintroduce itself to the system through system restore. I've Ran Maleware Bytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG 12 after doing this. Also lately I've been noticing a lot of windows updates that are prompted for updating. I've also used TddsKiller and HitmanPro while in normal Windows mode. I seen in another topid very similar to this one they said to d/l OTC and run that which I did(still to no prevail). I've also noticed when I run the Antivirus/Antimalware programs they are taking very long to run in safe mode. SAS took 7 hours, Malware Bytes took 5 hours, and AVG even took longer. I'm not sure what else to do. I use my computer for work and school and need the sound for many things, It's not only a distraction but it's putting a damper and time crunch on my work and school because of this problem. I would be very appreciative if someone would be willing to help fix this problem. I'm not what you would call a computer genius but I do know my way around a computer. Hi, I've been having problems with my sound and i found that my wave volume in the master volume controls have been muting on its own every few minutes and i would have to readjust it back to max. Also, i get these internet explorer popups coming up every so often and sometimes even random sounds (some sort of music or some commercial) playing even when the popups aren't there. On top of that, i hear these clicks while i'm on firefox (like those ones you hear when you're clicking a link on internet explorer). Also, my windows are being deselected on their own. I would be browsing on firefox and then it would turn grey and I'd have to click on it again to start using it again. This happens very frequently (2-3 minutes). I've been having this problem for about five to six days now and i'm not sure what to do. I've read around and some other people have the exact same problem that i have.I use windows xp and i use firefox as my browser. I found the same problem with one of the user here on the forum and I ran Combofix and it seems that the random sound is gone but my wave volume still mutes itself, the pop ups are still there and I can still hear the clicking sounds before the volume goes mute.I ran symantec Antivirus but nothing... Hi Guys
I'm relatively green when it comes to computer tech stuff. So I'll keep it short and sweet. I have an ASUS EEE PC and recently my volume started muting by itself. I clicked for advanced options to find out what was happening. The wave slider is always muted. Even after I un mute it, it remutes itself about 1 min to 2 minutes later. I saw some past posts that addressed this in 2010. I tried to go through the steps but the MBRCheck doesn't appropriately function per those instructions. Please help me.
Thanks

Hi,
ive been looking for a solution for a months and have finally stumbled on this website. Hope anyone will be able to help me because I am really confused. OK, so what seems to be wrong is the wave on my volume control turns off at random, sometimes even the whole volume control will cease to work until I go to services and reset it, also i have been getting multiple iexplore.exe processes opening up in my task manager which seems weird because I don't have internet explorer open (I use Google chrome). I am not extremely tech-savy so explanation would be much appreciated. I beg of you please help me, I've been struggling with this for a while and surfing the net for help with no solution yet. I appreciate you taking the time and reading this!

To keep things simple I have recetly built my own HTPC and am using a HDA Digital Mystique 7.1 Gold soundcard for audio. When I use the windows remote to adjust the volume it only changes the volume of the master volume level and leaves the wave volume level unchanged. I know that my best bet is to simply change the volume on my AV Receiver and leave the Wave and Master volume at mid - max but when my girlfriend uses the HTPC she always uses the remotes volume control.

Having said that I would simply like the option of being able to change the volume of my HTPC via the MS remote instad of just the amp.

If more information is needed or if you would like a better explanation of what I am trying to acheive then please feel free to ask.

Regards, Matt.

Answer:Adjusting Wave and Master Volume

You said the remote can controll the master volume. So just turn everthing else up to full and then just use the remote, because the master volume will controll the whole volume.

Hello and an initial Thank You!

As of last night I noticed that my sound was not working. I checked all my cords, my drivers, etc. I noticed in my volume controls that the wave volume was at 0%. Turned it up and about 2 minutes later the sound went out, turned the volume up and same thing happened. I started researching today and found your web site. I have read a lot of the entries with the same problem and have also found that I have multiple IExplore.exe process running with no windows open. I am sorry to repeat a post on your forum about earlier issue but did not want to follow previous directions since I am not 100% sure of what I am doing. Thank you and here are my DDS and ATTACH reports.

Hi!
Three days ago I tried to listen to a song on my computer and no sound came out. I checked all the physical plugs to my speakers and they were fine. I looked at my drivers and nothing was wrong. I double clicked my volume control to find that the wave slider had been brought down to zero. I slid it back up and closed the volume control, However still nothing was coming out. I looked again to see it had returned to zero. The slider keeps moving to zero on its own at regular intervals between fifteen and sixty seconds.
I've scanned my computer with Advanced system care 7.2 several times but it says I'm good.
A friend of mine said it might be a problem with my MBR. So I ran MBR Check and I have two affected MBR codes. Sadly I know zero about MBR codes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm uploading an attachment with the MBR check report if it helps.

Hi, Gregeno. Welcome to Major Geeks.

Have a look at this thread. The Unknown MBR may not be a ptoblem because it could be a custom partition created by the computer manufacturer although, it seems rather large (80 GB). At any rate, it wouldn't affect the mixer in XP. Is the computer exhibiting any other abnormal behavior?

Not getting any phantom sounds, redirects, or pop-ups. Regularly run SuperSpyware, MSE, Kapersky TDSS Killer, and Malwarebytes. Downloaded Combofix and TrojanRemover to double check, and all seems good. Quickly connects to my MSN homepage and other sites, and email loads fast.

The problem started after MS decided to send a security update late last week even though I'm still running 32 Bit XP Pro (SP3). I contacted MS support, but was told by numerous reps that no update was sent due to me running XP. It was. MS off-shore support isn't very supportive.

Wave slider returns to lowest position within a minute or two of being increased to max level. Sound will mute leaving slider in place, but returns upon clicking slider. I've read alot about the issue, but most seem to indicate the presence of an iexplorer.exe-related infecttion or a bootkit/rootkit issue. Not sure that's my problem as nothing is showing in various in-depth scans or in the task manager, but I'm not very tech savvy.

I've seen mention of registry issues, but I'm not comfortable messing with the registry without guidance, so I registered here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

If Malware Bytes found anything during its scans and removed what it found, it's still possible that there's something on your computer. It does sound as if there's some type of Trojan.

Head on over to the Malware Removal Forum and go through Read and Run Me First. Then start a new thread there.

Hello,

Before I start, I would like to mention that there certainly is quite a few threads that follow along the same issues. The most knowledgeable one ended with a format of the OS. I've formatted many computers, I certainly don't wish to do that to the one I'm currently on.

This computer is a Windows XP SP3, old fashioned 1G RAM along with Intel 4 2GHz CPU. The graphics card is a classic, yet hard to even find, NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 (Haha.) Along with a old Creative Tech. SB Audigy LS sound card.

Issue: My Wave volume, is automatically getting turned all the way down every 10-25 seconds.

I run the software listed below quite often to keep my computer clean:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO
CCleaner
Smart Defrag
Bitdefender (only ran if I find my computer being suspicious.)
Also, every once in a while for a quick check, SUPERAntiSpyware.

I manage my start-up processes when needed, also keep track of what I download, how I download things, where I download it from. I completely am protective on how things are installed on my computer, and certainly what I install.

Currently speaking, my computer is running completely functional, along with no errors.

If you need to know anything else, what so ever, just ask. I'm willing to share information if you wish to help.
Any help is appreciated, along with knowledgeable advice.

Please no redundant and irrelevant replies.

Thank you,

The original symptoms I had this morning seem to have changed after the process outlined in the "Read Me" thread, so I'll list a quick before and after. The volume control on my keyboard stopped working quite a while ago, but within the past week the wave volume constantly resets to zero. At about that time, I started getting random IE windows opening with ads no matter what I was doing at the time.

After the steps I did today, since the final restart of my system (20 mins ago) I have not had a IE window open, but that was intermittent before. None of the shortcut keys on my keyboard work now, and the wave volume still resets (although after the Malwarebytes scan the volume control worked up until the restart).

If it's of any help, pressing the volume control button on my keyboard would quickly open "WBT-MMkey" on the taskbar then disappear before opening the volume control window. It only did that when opening from the keyboard.

Thank you very much for any help and here are my logs.

Okay, I've been using Winamp with the same volume settings for months to play my MP3s - preamp at zero, Winamp volume at maximum, and PC volume at 2%.

A few hours ago I decided to play a MIDI file. The song played at a low volume and I increased my PC speakers to around 20% to be able to listen to it properly. I thought that was normal, since the MIDI file was of extremely low quality. However when I resumed playing my MP3 files, it played at the same volume as the MIDI file, and I could barely hear anything at 2%, which is what I want to keep my PC volume at. Any idea why this might have happened? I tried reinstalling it, but no change. Thanks

I posted this in the Winamp technical support forum, but my thread was barely looked at. Thanks for any help.

I should mention that the playback volume is fine with other media players, and I have to adjust my PC speaker volume to 60% on Winamp to reach the volume I used to get on 2%, prior to playing that MIDI file.

Hi,This is my first post, which is of course about some suspected malware. I'm not so sure how it started but I'm having the same problem as a few people on this forum. Probably some sketchy website I visited, they say curiosity killed the cat but it also messed up the computer. The sound just randomly shut off. When I started looking at what was the problem I noticed that on the volume control panel the wave volume was muted. I fixed the volume but after a few minutes it will mute itself again. Another odd thing was that although I usually use Firefox, I keep getting IE pop-ups showing an HTTP 404 page. When I looked at Task Manager it shows iexplorer.exe running. If I try to end the process, it will restart in about 10-30 seconds. Oh, and it's being run by SYSTEM instead of Owner like normal IE. Thanks,PeachyMei

Hello All,Am facing issue with the WAVE volume control . It gets muted automatically and have to manually again raise its volume bar. This I guess is related to the Advertisment pop up's which comes up and I can hear the music of the advertisement. Sometimes 2 AD's are played simultaneously. The strange thing is even when am not using internet explorer, I can find iexplorer.exe being displayed in Task Manager. I am not sure what kind of virus is this. I tried running Bit Defender Anit Virus, but before the scan completes and results are shown, my Dell Inspirion 1525 , shuts down due to over heating(I guess).I ran a Hijack This , so that I can find the problem. Attached for your inputs.

Answer:Wave volume control getting mute and Ad's popping up

Just an update to my problem. I learned that I was infected by iexplore.exe virus. I tried various tools like1)Hijack This2)Malware Bytes3)Prevx4)Trojan Removerbut none worked for me. finally I tried "Combofix" and seems like it has fixed the issue. I need to monitor my machine for couple of more days to be sure if there is no other problem. The wave control is normal now and I don't hear random advertisment music.Strange thing is after combofix finished , it created a folder on C:/Combofix and inside that folder, it created some exe's and PREVX is claiming it to be a virus threat. Not sure how a virus removal tool can create exe's which are identified as virus themselves. Please suggest, if I can delete the combo fix folder.???Thanks in advance.!!

This is gonna be a lame question, and I'm not sure where to post this question, but this problem is driving me crazy-

Everytime I play my songs in Winamp, the Wave Balance on the volume controls goes all the way up and it starts distorting the sound. I'll move the level to the half way mark, and it will remain there for the rest of the song, but once the next song comes on, it shoots right back and distorts the sound again. I just got a new hard drive (p.o.s Seagate) but with the same sound card (Sound Blaster).

What is the problem and how can I rectify it permanently??

Thanks..

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and then attach the requested logs to your next reply when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. I was told to post a new topic here since I hadn't provided all the information needed. Here's a description of my problem from the old thread:"My wave volume keeps turning itself down, and every so often ads start playing in the background without any visible source. I've tried scans from programs like AVG, Ad-Aware, etc. that buy me about five minutes of peace until the problems come back. I've also started getting pop-ups through Internet Explorer, which I don't even use."Attached is the Attach.txt file. I can't provide the Ark.txt file because my computer restarts itself every time I run a scan with GMER. As the title says, every 5-10 minutes the wave bar in my volume control goes down, without my permission or interfering. Can you help me resolve this problem?

Problem: when i play songs or watch videos or do anything that deals with the sound, the wave slider in the volume control will automatically jump from the high volume that i set it at to mute.

I have checked out the properties and volume control properties and still can't find a way for it to stay un-mute.

My volume control is the SoundMax Digital Audio driver...
i checked the hardware and it says it working properly and i can hear the sounds but only for some time, before the wave volume automatically jumps to mute...

this is getting annoying....

Any one have a solution to keep my wave volume from muting it self permanently...

Please Respond ASAP

Answer:Windows Xp Volume Control With Wave Slider

Hmmm...you might try using the native XP volume icon, rather than Sound Max.

I have SM on my system but I don't bother to use, I see no advantage to using the XP volume control (I did try the Sound Max control for a period of time) and any program I use for music file playback will have it's own volume controls.

Could be possible file corruption...I might try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers which load Sound Max (if I really wanted to use it).

One thing to remember about Device Manager...it has no way (that I know of) to distinguish/inform the user...if a file is corrupt or not.

Hi,

I started noticing that my sound would randomly turn off, and it turned out in my volume controls that the wave control would automatically shut off by itself even after I fix it. I do not use IE, and instead use firefox. I also get random IE pop up ads.

I've already read that iexplore.exe is the cause of this as I have tried to remove it from processes but it keeps returning. Thank you in advance for all your help, it is greatly appreciated that you guys do what you do to help out people like me

As in another fellow member, i have the same problem. This is my first post, which is of course about some suspected malware. When I looked at Task Manager it shows iexplorer.exe running. hi!

i will try to explain my problem the best i can:

every 3-5 minutes or so, the main window that i'm working in (doesn't matter which program im running, but usually firefox/msn messenger, etc..) stops being the "top" window, and instead goes to the background - as if i opened another internet explorer window on top of it.

this "glitch" is always followed by something even more strange - the sound gets cut off, and if i check the meters in volume control i always find the "wave" meter to be on minimum, and i have to put it back in the middle.

WHAT THE HELL???

can you please help?

HiI'm running on Windows XP and Google Chrome.I had no idea how it happened but recently i got this problem where the wave volume keeps muting by itself every now and then. Besides that, there are sound ads which keep appearing together with IE pop ups. Even when gaming, it keeps returning to the desktop page by itself.I've read up on the forum and i realised i'm not the only one with this problem. I tried following the steps given by the replies but it was rather confusing and i encountered some problems along the way. For instance, the scan using GMER.exe was taking hours and it became non-responsive suddenly. So i was wondering if there is any one familiar with solving this problem that is willing to help me.Thank you for your time.

Every minute or so, the volume will shut off, and when I check the Master Volume, Wave is always muted. I can bring it back up, but after random intervals (ranging from 2 seconds to 5 minutes), the wave will be muted again. Also, invisible sound adds randomly appear and the only way to shut them off is to end svchost.exe in the Processes bar of Task Manager. iexplorer.exe is also using CPU in the Processes as well.

Well, I seem to have a not so uncommon issue. And, I'm almost ashamed to be posting here. Any help is appreciated. Glad folks like you seem to enjoy helping those of us that know enough to get ourselves in trouble. I'm another that had this issue creep up after only using Chrome now for a few years.

I am having iexplore.exe running in the taskmanager multiple times, listed user is SYSTEM. It appeared to be playing just audio adds, but I am now starting to see pop-ups as well. Also, it seems that after it's played a snippet of audio it turns Wave Volume under Volume Control all the way down.

I have attached my logs. I can't get a RootRepeal log, running that program results in my PC rebooting after it displays "Initializing" for about 15 seconds.

Thanks again in advance.

I've been having multiple problems too many to write up with my computer over the past couple of months. I've run Mbam and it's found a few things, I can post logs if that would help. I had a friend that fixes computers come over and he seemed to fix most of the issues.

But I'm still haveing some issues:

The wave volume keeps muting itself.

Explorer.com keeps popping up when I try to shut the computer down.

I'll be on the net and then when I try to go to a new page it won't load the page and it looks like I'm not connected to the net, but I still am. If I restart the computer most times it will reconnect to the internet ok. Since it's not always connecting I'm also having issues downloading emails into Outlook.

I've look on your site for help and it looks like I need to post info from the DDS tool so it's below. Let me know what else you need. Thanks!

Hi recently I've been getting many IE advertisement popups, audio noises, loss of wave control.

I only use firefox, and have scanned with ad-aware and AVG. Ad- Aware did detect two virus which I promptly removed, however they seem to be unrelated to my current problem since it is still happening

Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will make donations to this gregarious website if the problem is resolved on this forum .
Yours gratefully,

Will

I am having what appears to be two major issues with my Windows XP 32-bit machine which seem to be related in some way. After having the computer booted in normal mode for several minutes or longer, often times some programs will not load. I check in Task Manager and it shows that the program is running but no GUI comes up for the program. This has happened with Internet Explorer, Raidcall, Skype, Windows Volume Control, and possibly other programs I can't think of at the moment. When I was having the issue with opening IE, I was still able to work in Firefox and Chrome. However, I tried using Windows Live Outlook Webmail (live.com e-mail) to send an e-mail message and the new window popped up but would not display anything in it (it had the loading icon continuously but did not load). I tried it both through Chrome and Firefox.

Also, often times my windows wave volume bar is getting set to the lowest setting. It seems to occur when going into a game or opening another program. I have to go into the volume control and bring it back up to hear any sound. It happens very frequently and I'm unsure what may be causing the issue. The two issues seem to be related because they began occurring at about the same time.
I've tried running a MalwareBytes scan which only seemed to find some type of adware file that it removed. I have AVG Free installed as my antivirus program.

I have been having issues every time I log into normal mode lately. I've tried a few instances... Read more

Hi. I believe I have the exact same problem as someone who posted a help request today: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/330090/wave-volume-mutes-internet-explorer-popups-and-clicks/I'm experiencing pretty much the same issues: Volume control WAVE suddenly mutes, and popups every now and then. This just started happening today, so I'm hoping I got infected today and not earlier since I haven't entered any passwords since it started happening. If it's possible, I'd like to know when the infecting files were created. NOD32 scanned my hard drives and memory and came up with "Mebroot Trojan", but can't clean it. What am I even paying ESET for? So I ran DeFogger like the pinned guide said. Then I ran dds:DDS.txthttp://tinypaste.com/670b9And attached is Attach.txt. I would have posted a GMER log as well but my PC freezes up every time I scan. I would really appreciate any help removing this cursed infection. Thanks in advance!
