.tif file thumbnails in windows 7

Question: .tif file thumbnails in windows 7

Why do my layered .tif files sometimes thumbnail as only one of the layers? Changing the active layers and re-saving does not help. I use Photoshop CS2 as my image editing software. When the same file is saved as a .jpg it thumbnails perfectly.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got a new computer with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I find it very annoying that in all the Open File dialog boxes and even Windows Explorer there does not seem to be a selection under the View menu to show thumbnails of image files. Even when I select Contents and highlight the file it still only shows a generic icon. Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

I frequently use disc cleanup and I would like to know if there is a way to make the job easier in regards to the thumbnails file.

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

I'm having a bizarre problem on my Windows 10 PC.

For some reason, lots of image thumbnails won't load (particularly PNG files and AVI files), which is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it shows the file type icon, sometimes a generic file icon, and something literally nothing at all.

In addition, if I right click on an image file, and choose "Open with...", explorer freezes and I have to restart it in Task Manager.

Also, Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations perpetually loads for me and I can't set it.

I reset my PC about a week ago, I've tried this solution, I've done check disk and repair disk, and I can't seem to find a solution.

I use thumbnails while I work constantly, so this is a huge detriment to my productivity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

When I use Windows XP it is easy for me to recall where I left a file or a folder. The thumbnails in Windows XP  helps me.But In Windows 7 and 10 I can not find how to get the same thumbnails to show. Some pictures show in the folders, bu often the pictures themselves do not. Why? Also, I can not alter the pictures Windows 10 puts in the folder icons. Here is what I mean. I have enclosed below a screen shot of a directory in Windows XP. To make the point, I am only showing  the lpwer half of the folder display. Notice that both folders and files have icons that help me identify an object visually. The documents  done with Notepad do no have a views. But PDF documents and Libre Office documents have some nice little thumbnails that help me spot a document I am trying to locate. If I can not remember the name,  the thumbnail has a visual clue that can help.My question. Is this available in Windows 10? is so, How? It has now been over a year and I still get lost on Windows 10. I  do not see hat it is an improvement for a older person like myself.  I prefer a  visual OS that I can use.  Go ahead, tell me I am the only one that has this problem.

Question: Windows thumbnails

Sometimes when I click on a video file (to see its thumbnail in the details panel) or try to open it, the folder will freeze, and eventually explrorer.exe will quit, and restart (if not then i'd have to restart it from the task mgr) ...it seems as if it's crashing when trying to generate the preview ... sp1 doesnt fix it, turning off the thumbnail cache also doesnt help? anybody?

When I used to view my security camera video card in Vista I would get a thumbnail view of each 10 second video produced.. This made it easy to skip through each video produced and pick out the ones that I thought would be best to check. This would be watched after about a week or so of videos. Now in Windows 7 I cannot seem to find this thumbnail view. All I can see is the media player film type icon for each video. Is there any way of turning the thumbnail function back on. Hope you can help.

Apologies if this question has been answered, but I couldnt find the thread on searching the forums,

I have very recently purchased a laptop with Win 7 Premium SP1 x64, and is fully updated. I also used VLC as my default media player.

I also have a HD camcorder and transfer my AVCHD (.mts) files to the laptop. Unfortunately, whilst the files run properly via VLC or WMP, there are no thumbnails generated other then the default icons.

Its only a minor inconvenience, but im wondering if anyone else has had similar difficulties and if they have overcome them?

Ive not downloaded any third-party codecs, since the files are playable.

Thanks for any help you are able to provide.

Hello,

I noticed yesterday that after using File Explorer for a short while, it stops showing any thumbnails, and only shows a plain white icon, not even the default icon for a file type. I tried all the usual methods for showing thumbnails, but to no avail.

Then, after a short while, it just stops working altogether. If I try to change folder, I get the message "Working on it..." and a green (lack of) progress bar in the address bar, but nothing happens. It just sits there and refuses to show me the contents of any folder, even "This PC".

The only way I have found to solve this is to restart the machine. As you can imagine, this isn't very practical!

Anyone any ideas? It's making it really hard to do any work. Thanks.

Hi,
1. Do you have any system restore points or disk images you can use to restore your PC to how it was on a date prior to this problem developing?
(We strongly and repeatedly recommend people use disk imaging.. it means you can often recover your PC to a working state without assistance, quickly and efficiently without stress).

2. As an interim measure, try using a different file manager.

I've started playing around with some video editing on Windows 8 and am finding it very difficult to organise my files because I can't get the thumbnails to show up in explorer. I've googled this fairly extensively, and have tried three solutions to address this problem.
Downloading K-Lite codec pack, which I have since read conflicting information about, as to whether this was a good ideas.
Downloaded, installed and run Media Preview by Babelsoft
Followed the advice here about ensuring that the correct options are selected to force Windows to enable thumbnails.

At this stage, and particularly bearing in mind the K-Lite codec pack, I am concerned that I might actually be doing more harm than good. Therefore I'm looking for any advice about how to resolve this issue.

I have just run Media Preview which found around 1000 video files to generate thumbnails for, however there are simply not showing up in explorer. I have a range of video formats, such as .mov .mp4 .avi that have come from a range of sources, and none are showing the thumbnail previews.

Any advice about what I should try next? I can answer any questions about my set-up and post any necessary screenshots.

This is a well known issue. Don't know what the deal is, but it's been a major thorn in my ass since Vista x64, much more so since Windows 7 though. I've made sure the preview was turned on in the folders options, cleared the cache, and even messed with the registry. Nothing worked. Would re-install the operating system (since I usually noticed it immediately from a fresh install) and it would work properly. Weird bug for sure.

My original problem was this: whenever I double-clicked on a thumbnail in Windows Explorer, the picture would open up in Paint Shop Pro but when I wanted another picture to come up in the PSP application that was already open, it would open up another PSP instead.

I thought I found a solution to this after looking online (can't remember exactly what it was now but I entered something in start, run) only now I have another problem because I can't view any thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

Can anyone help me get my thumbnails back and also solve my problem with PSP opening up lots of times for every photo I want to view? Thanks!

Hi, I'm facing a really annoying and incomprehensible issue.
I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64 bit. Just in case you need this information, I have installed:
1. VLC 2.1.5 x64 (default audio/video player)
2. MPC-HC 1.7.7 x64
3. AIMP3
4. K-Lite Mega Codec pack 10.8.0 (which includes Icaros thumbnail plug-in)
5. I turned off Windows Media Player 12 through "Control Panel/Programs and Features"
Facts:

A) Every single software is up to date, all drivers, all Windows updates... everything.
B) All the audio files (mp3 and FLAC) in my music library have embedded cover arts, which means, they all have their album art inlaid the file.
C) My music library is sorted this way: there's a folder for each different artist/band in the MUSIC folder. Inside an artist folder, there are album's folders, and inside album's folders, there are mp3's.
D) As all my audio files have embedded album arts, there's no need to put any kind of album art or image in the album folder, cause every single audio file has already embedded its cover.

Well, first of all, I WANTED to turn off Windows Media Player 12 because it creates thumbnails and a lot of useless pictures in each folder with an audio file there. That's just awful.
Everything was working fine until a month ago (I didn't have this issue a month ago). Suddenly, one day, mp3 thumbnails disappeared. If I set "View" to "Extra large icons" in a folder that contains mp3's, there are only giant VLC's icons... Read more

For all my photos, unless I view them in "Windows Photo Gallery which is inconvenient -- I want to view them in Windows Explorer, I do not see real true thumbnails, I just see this default scene of water, green hills and sky. I have followed the instructions here Thumbnails in Windows Explorer here Default Programs - Program Default Associations (tho I wasn't thrilled about making Windows Photo Gallery my default program for JPG, I followed these instructions anyhow). I NEVER had a problem like this in XP. I'm beginning to understand why Vista has such a bad reputation. Hello Angelag, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can use Open With on the file type and browse to the Photoshop Elements exe file to have it open the file type with that program by default instead.

Have you checked the View settings in Windows Explorer to see if it is set to either Medium Icons, Large Icons, or Extra Large Icons to see a thumbnail preview of the file image as the icon?

If I changed a picture file in Windows XP, I could go to the folder containing the file and right click on the thumbnail. The option 'Refresh thumbnails' was on the list. There doesn't seem to be this option in Windows 7. I can temporarily refresh a thumbnail. If I change the thumbnail size fron large to extra large for example, the thumbnail IS refreshed but if I†change back to 'large', close and re-open the folder, the old thumbnail is back. So I now have lots of pictures with out-of-date thumbnails.

Answer:How do I refresh thumbnails in Windows 7?

Hi mike-holden,

You can also try the following steps:

1.†††† Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.
2.†††† On the View tab, uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails".
3.†††† Click Apply and then click OK.
4.†††† Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.
5.†††† On the View tab, check "Always show icons, never thumbnails".
6.†††† Click Apply and then click OK.

Please see if the issue can be resolved now.

In addition, it is recommended cleaning up cookies, temporary internet files and temp files. You can use Disk Cleanup to do this. (There is a "Thumbnails" option in Disk Cleanup and you can check it to clean it up.)

Regards,
Linda

Hi.
I have been fighting with this since I purchased this notebook with Windows 7 in 2010.
I do a lot of photo editing.  I may have around 40K image files on my computer.  When I am doing a lot of editing, a problem arises as the thumbnails do not update in window explorer.  So, if I am working on several images and will open and reopen files, if I have made an improvement on a file, the thumbnail will not update and it gets confusing trying to find a picture that I have just edited.
I have sought suggestions on this issue a dozen different times.  When I troll through forums, this is a  common problem.
Here's a spoiler alert ... cleaning the thumbnail cache does not fix the problem. Matter of fact, here is a classic "cookbook" recipe on how to fix this from another forum ...

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10797-thumbnail-cache-clear-reset.html

As usual, the answer is never found and the solutions move from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Since Bleeping is my favorite stop, I thought I would seek an answer here rather than letting Google find another false positive to my question.

Thanks.

Answer:Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer

My experience is that the thumbnails reflected by Explorer view...only update when the folder/Explorer window is opened.

I suppose that using a photo album, rather than explorer, might result in the desired updated images you seek.

I tend to give any edited image a new filename, keeping track of them in that manner while also retaining my originals.

I would like to know how to get back the thumbnail view for FLV files in my Windows folders. I used to see a preview of the video (first frame I believe). But now they are no longer there. I did install a new versin of the K-Lite codecs and I think this removed the thumbnail preview. I have tried uninstalling the codecs, deleting the thumbs.db file with no luck.

Well, I am quite surprised that no one has stepped in on this one.

The solution was actually very simple. When I upgraded the K-Lite codec pack, I uninstalled the old one first. The new one had the same features (plus more) but some were not default when before they were.

Problem solved.

Hi. All thumbnails for pics on windows folders have recently disappeared. I have double checked all folder and performance settings and tried repairing Windows photo gallery, deleting thumbnails cache, restoring pc to previous state, changing file associations etc etc. No joy.

When I open the pictures folder, thumbnails appear briefly and then quickly revert to icons. "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is definitely unchecked.

I have successfully installed another picture browser which works fine when I work through it directly, unfortunately I still need thumbnails on the standard windows folders for selecting & uploading pics online, which is an important part of my business.

Anyone any suggestions? I have already tried all the suggestions for similar problems I have found on the forums but nothing so far has made any difference.

Double clicking on a file to open it with the default winpic&fax viewer results in nothing, nor does choosing it from an "open with.." menu on another picture type. I have a rather large (seriously large) collection of anime/manga stuff on my computer, what I used to like to do in WinXP was take a cover pic and slap it on the folder icon so that I could recognize files at-a-glance..

Now the thing is, and I had this problem in Windows Vista also, by the time I get to the couple hundredth file thumbnail, Windows 7 starts forgetting the thumbnails that I'd already set and putting random ones back on the files I've already done..

Is there a way to get Windows to 'remember' my custom thumbnails?

Also I tried a trick I found to deny Windows permissions to the thumbnail's database, it didn't work for this problem..

I'm currently downloading a copy of Linux hoping that it's easier to customize/navigate these hundreds of folders. -_-

EDIT: I downloaded "Ubuntu Linux" and I'm tempted to mark this topic "Solved" but I'll leave it open and see if anyone can answer this... I feel like a fool for not trying out Linux sooner, I'm going to use it for all my picture archiving/browsing.

I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.

Answer:Windows Explorer not showing Thumbnails

Did you make any changes to your Windows Operating System recently? Sounds like the aftermath of a "tune up" that went wrong.

That being said, the data that has no thumbnails.... can you open them and view the data, I'm curious to know if it's corrupted.

Hi I've been struggling with these issues bout 20 days and this is whats going on.

When I press the windows key on my keyboard (corsair k70 vengance rgb) nothing happens but I also notice that at the same time the thumbnails of the programs I have currently opened disappear quickly and by the time I can click them the program doesn't come up, also alt+tab isnt working either . I've done like 8 clean installations and nothing seems to improve, aditinally normal video files flickers when this comes, it tends to vanish and everything works normally till it happens again. Right now I don't have enything but drivers installed. I'm using: Intel i7 4790, 2 8gb Kingston hyperx fury, nvidia gtx970, segate n wdc hard drives, corsair k70 rgb vengance, corsair m65 rgb.

I've also tried installing the os in different HD but nothing, even went back to w7 and I get the exact same problem.

I'd be much appreciated if u need further info pls tell me.

edit: here is a quick video of the problem

A month ago Windows forced an Update. At the end of it it asked me to run a disk error check - the one with the black box. At the end of this it showed a Codec error which no one including my professional IT support people have been able to fix. When I rebooted all my jpg thumbnail previews had disappeared and were substituted by standard Microsoft icons. I have read and tested every fix I have seen on the web and none work. My IT support people have had the computer for hours and run Tweaking.com and have not fixed it. We have run three different anti virus tools plus Eset and they find nothing. In addition the Windows 10 update will not download and fails and Skype will not update. As I use images for my business and cannot identify them except by file name this is a disaster. My IT support suggest a new computer but it is running fine. this appears to be a software issue

Good morning all..

How do i look at the actual images when i choose thumbnails in windows.

I used to be able to see the pictures when i chose the thumbnail options, but all i see now is the type of icon they are. for ex. the gif or jpeg icon.

I don't know if i did something or not.

Thanks.

Windows 7 brings a new enhanced Taskbar a.k.a Superbar, the most interesting changes made in the GUI. When you hover your mouse on the program icon, it shows the thumbnail previews of the program. You can change the delay time that the mouse pointer has to stay hovered over an item before that item's thumbnail preview is displayed.
Here's how you can do this>>>
1. Click on the Start button, type regedit in the search box and hit enter.
2. Now you'll have Registry Editor open. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse
3. In the right pane, double-click on MouseHoverTime and type any value less than 400, say 20 in the Value data field (the values are in milliseconds). If u want them to appear ultrafast then type 0.
4. Now close Registry Editor and restart the computer to see the results.
Now hover your mouse on any taskbar icon and see if thumbnails are appearing faster than before.

Problem fixed. Thread closed.
System restored.

At first, my Windows Explorer kept closing itself. I browsed around the web for a solution, and I found one at this thread:
https://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2040268.php

As suggested by the last poster, marcher, I typed in regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll.
At first, I was fine with it, but now I'd like my thumbnails to show again. Does anyone know how?

Answer:Showing thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Try, if using XP -

Tools / Folder Options / View / Show hidden files and folders

Make sure it's ticked for "Show" rather than "Hide"

pleasee help me...
last night my theme was changed by itself...
it changed my thumbnail on taskbar... when the mouse cursor is moved over the icon, only the visible text or text (title window) only....
how it could happen... is there someone can explain it with me ?
and how can I restore the display to the previous view ?

Answer:Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails gone or missing

Sounds like you have reverted to a basic theme, as in, not an Aero based one. Are you / Were you using a custom 3rd party theme? Have you just done updates? If using 3rd party theme, have you re-patched the necessary system files?
Do you have a restore point you can jump back to?
These are open suggestions btw to possibly prompt you into what has happened!!
