Preferred Solution: Problem with Edit - Move to Folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have 4 PCs network in Win7. A is primary Win7. B is win 7 networked. C is XP on Win7 network, and D is XP on Win7 network. I have a folder on C(XP) that is shared on the network and can be accessed from A, B and D. I want to delete that folder on the XP (C) and put it on A (Win7) to be shared on the network. Copied it to USB drive. Copied it from USB to A (Win7) HD.

When I open the program that uses the files in the transferred folder, A (Win7) cannot find the folder/files on A that I copied. It looks for the old networked location on C, which is not there (deleted after copied). How do I stop the program from looking on C (XP) and find on A (Win7)?

When I try to open the program on A(Win7) it will NOT let me go to ANY other folder except the shared folder on the C (XP) PC which no longer exists.

Answer:Move Folder from XP to Windows 7 Problem

If the computers are all networked, use Windows Explorer (My Computer as well) to browse the network from Computer A to get to computer C. Navigate to the folder on C. Select the folder, then right click on it and select Cut. Navigatre to where you want it on A then right click and select Paste.

The files will be copied from Computer C to Computer A and when done, deleted from Computer A.

Answer:Problem when trying to move, rename, or create folder

Hi there,
Right click on desktop > personalize > windows 7

Select the windows seven theme and restart your computer. Or, you can try this,
Go to www.ccleaner.com and download ccleaner.

Install it and run it. You are going to be in the first page of ccleaner. On the left hand side, check every thing except the last one (it has a word wipe in it) then click the run cleaner button and wait until it's closed make sure every application are closed Especially web browser. Once done, click on registry on the left hand side corner and click on scan for issues but make sure that all the options are Checked on the left hand corner. Once the scanning is done, if there are issues, click on fix button or if none close out of that. Better explAination on YouTube.

Hi all,
I've done a quick search but couldn't find someone else with this problem. Sometimes when I want to copy or move a file to my picture folder it will not appear on the list of folders. Every other folder and sub folder will appear but not the picture folder or any sub folder in it. It's been driving me nuts as I recently bought photoshop cs4 and need to put things in the pictures folder nearly every day. A restart sometimes solves the problem but not always. I'm using Vista Premium 32 bit SP1.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

Hi,

I'm running XP Home SP2, with a limited account which was originally an administrator account when the PC was first set up. At that time, I installed an external HDD. I have now changed the account to a Limited Account, and can no longer move / edit files on the external HDD. I just get a message saying "Access is Denied" whenever I try to do anything. Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening? Anything to try would be great! :)

Thanks,
h

Answer:[resolved] Limited account can't move / edit external HDD files

When you start your computer press f8 repeatedly untill a menu pops up, select safe mode, and logon as the Administrator. Go to start, control panel, user accounts, and change your user to an administrator. Or use the administrator account to move files if you want to keep your account limited.

I've had this problem for a few months, just lived with it. In the attached screen shots, you will see I have no folder trees in any of the pop up Add, Move, or Copy pop ups in Explorer and Windows Media Player. I have no clue if this can be restored to show again. This has happened before I upgraded Media Player so it shouldnt be that. I'm thinking Windows Corruption somewhere. I have not and do not have any malware on this machine or any other that I have networked. My system is clean and runs 1000%. Any ideas on how I can restore the folder trees?

Answer:Solved: Folder Tree MISSING from Copy, Move, Add Folder popup

Click start > run > type regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll and click ok. If you don't see immediate results, reboot.

I am having a problem with "folder in use" prompts when trying to edit a file name.

I found the following Microsoft answer to the problem here: Renaming a network folder in Windows 7 Explorer fails with "the action can't be completed..."

It says to navigate to:User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

Unfortunately I'm not much of a techie and am quite unfamiliar with M7, so could someone help me out please?

Answer:Problem with "folder in use" prompts when trying to edit a file name.

So is this a network directory that you're working with or a local directory your PC?

Either way, good way to get an answer for this is to use Process Explorer. Once you have it open , attempt to rename the file again. When the error message is still open, do a Ctrl+F and then type in the name of the file (no extension) or folder name. It should come up with one or more process names. These are processes that are currently handling that particular file/folder, which one (or more) of them may be responsible for not playing nice and sharing the file/folder with anyone else.

If it's a network directory, then what the instructions are telling you is to go into the Local Group Policy Editor and change a policy setting. In Start Menu type "group policy" and press Enter. Then navigate to the "directory" it mentions, and then change the associated setting.

Hi,

I'm new to this sort of thing so I hope I do this right!

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP3.

Recently, I noticed when I tried to move to/copy to from the Explorer window, my folder tree was blank in the little box that pops up. Regardless of whether I use the links to the left of the window or if I go into Edit - Copy To (or Move To), it happens with anything involving the explorer - documents, photos, etc. The only changes made recently was I had made an account on the computer for my kids, then deleted it not long after, without saving their folders (because they never used the account). Any other changes (installing programs, etc) happened after I noticed the blank box. It's not a major issue but it is slightly annoying.

Any ideas? And thank you ahead of time!

I'm dowloading some roms (I have around 2k). THey came zipped up, so I unzipped them, but I now have 2k folders, when the program I'm using to run the roms needs them the files all in the same folder. I would rather not spend a few hours opening a folder, dragging the file into a different folder, then repeating that process 2k times.

Is there any easy way to get the files into one folder, and leave the empty folders behind.

I'm running Vista, btw.

Answer:Is there any easy way to move the contents of a folder, but leave the folder

The easiest way involves going back a step. Use something like WinZip and choose the option to "extract to here". Then, everything you extract will be in the same folder. I'm making an assumption here, that you are using the built-in zip utility. That's fine in a pinch, but if you are working with that many files, you need a full-fledged app.

It's a rush job and I dont have time to learn Windows 7.
Simple question: with the USB inserted in the laptop, how do I move a folder from it to a folder in a library?

Answer:Move folder from USB stick to Library folder in Windows 7

Simplest way would be to open whichever library you want the folder from the USB to go in then 'drag and drop it' or you could also 'copy and paste' the folder.

I was doing some organizing (I don't know why, but I don't have "organize" in my bookmarks menu?) and moved one main folder into another folder by mistake, now can't move it back out into the main bookmarks menu.
Have done a search and nothing I can find will work.

This can't be that difficult!

Answer:Firefox, Yahoo: How to move bookmarks folder out of another folder?

Organize favorites is for IE. For Firefox you can restore your bookmarks by clicking on Bookmarks in the Menu Bar, click Show All Bookmarks, click the Import and Backup button, click Restore, click Choose File and then navigate to and select the .json file that was moved. Firefox will place a copy of the .json file (which are your bookmarks) back to the default folder. If you want, you can select a recent backup copy from the drop down list instead of choose file. That would save you a few clicks.

After restoring your bookmarks you can delete the accidentally moved file.

Hi.

I have a boot drive which is 250gb (My C drive). I have Win 7 and some apps on it.
I have installed Steam on my other hard drive. So far most games have been cooperative and install their folders close to Steam!

However, one game in particular (Empire Total War) has installed one of its folders in "C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly".

From experience from my old PC, I know this folder (The Creative Assembly) can grow to close to 20gb in a matter of a year. I don't want that to happen and therefore thought of relocating, moving, or redirecting this folder (The Creative Assembly) to another location.

How do I do that and is that recommended? (I could simply go ahead and do this right now, but I would rather get some expert opinions first before any instabilities in my system).

Thank you.

Answer:Move a folder within the appdata/roaming folder to another location?

If you attempt to move the folder any programs dependant on that folder would have to know where to look for it, if you do attempt it i would leave the original in situ and copy/paste to new drive then attempt to redirect program if it fails then you still have original

Im not familiar with steam but as long as you can redirect the games save file path to new location if you have that option then i dont see why you cant do it

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos
to C:\ and when it won't! I don't get it. If I'm Owner don't I own it already?

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Anyone have a clue? Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Answer:Move Folder Out Of Shared Folder Same Drive Wants To Copy?

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. The post deals with the unexpected copying of files when trying to delete them, but I thought the same (or a similar) principle might apply with respect to moving files/folders. When I try to move files from one folder to another (or off a device on to my computer), not all of them move. I have tried drag & drop, and cut & paste. I don't get an error message or anything like that, some of the files just don't move. So I have to go through file by file and see what didn't make it, very tedious! I have tried moving as few as 25 at a time, and they still don't all make it. Can anyone help?

Answer:Not all files will move from folder to folder

Seems like some were in use by something.

Anyway, can you try using Fastcopy? (this is the official website with download, select Executable (32bit), yes the guy making it is japanese, don't worry about the download page being in japanese, the program is in english)
It's simple and does usually tell you why it wasn't able to move files, so you can have a clue of what is going on.
For moving lots of files, it's much better than copy-paste/drag&drop. Also because of its options (as explained on its site).

In case of other problems, report back.

Hi,
I want to edit the folder templates, cause the pre-fab Microsoft templates are insufficient to my needs.

The music folder template for example, doesn't contain, file-type, bitrate, etc. (yes you can select that manually but you can't apply the customization on to the subfolders......)

To manually change this for every folder is a waste of time.

PLease let there be a solution otherwise I'll have to install directory Opus again( waste of memory)

Hello UnderBoac,

If the subfolders have the same folder template, then you can use Apply to Folders after you set the folder view of the main folder.

Hi,

While I can edit the file, firefox will not recognize the changes that I made to the file.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Hope someone here can help me, thank you in advance for any advice.

Answer:Can't edit files in roaming folder

Have you tried making those changes in the program itself?
Could be that file you are editing is a backup of the real original file.
Make the change in the program and then look at that file to see if it reflects the changes.
Also do a search for *.XML and see if there is another file with a similar name in some other folder, like a folder for the Firefox program.

There was a Metro app that I installed that I liked the functionality of but didn't like the fonts for; I knew where the configuration was to change the appearance (a CSS file in the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\<app name> directory), but when I tried to modify the file, it kept giving me an "Access is denied." error without any extra information.

I tried changing the ownership of the apps folder to my own account; didn't work. Changed the ownership of that specific file, and all the other files within that folder; still not allowed. I went into the PowerShell as administrator and tried copying or renaming the file; still "Access is denied." and nothing else.

Is there a way to make this file editable, or is the access blocked on a system level? I just want to change a few fonts around, but if Microsoft is trying to prevent me from doing so in order to protect its walled garden, then I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on Windows 8. Hi there,

I am the 'informal tech guy' at my school. I am working with this douche computer teacher who simply teaches typing. He's threatening to thaw deep freeze on the machines if he cannot find a way to get archiving to work for Mavis Beacon 17.

I read articles about folder mapping Tweak UI; however, I ONLY want to map the Broderbund folder within All Users -> Application Data.

An article I read said I need to manually map folders using reg edit.

The article, however, was not specific on how to do such an action.

Here's the folder I'd like to redirect to a thawed drive so the program archives student progress: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Broderbund

Thanks!

Hey EightForums friends,

I'm trying to reorganize my PC files, and am creating custom icons to more easily identify folders.

For example, I have a folder dedicated to .ISOs (called Virtual CDs) and one for Books (see the icons attached).

I make them by using three PNG layers in PhotoShop: the closest folder flap, the further part of the folder, and then whatever icon I choose in the middle. Then I export to ICO.

While it works well for the most part, one problem I have though is when I have to view "details" or other small-icon views in File Explorer, it looks gritty and pixilated (see the comparison screenshot below).

Is there a method I can use to edit various sizes of an .ico file so it looks better in other sizes?

Hi everyone,

Recently it seems that any time I click on a folder it's as if I'm trying to edit the folder name. Same thing happens if I click a file - explorer thinks I'm trying to edit the file name.

The only way I can move into a folder is by selecting a different one, then rapidly clicking the folder icon next to the name - it still throws the name into edit mode but opens the directory as well.

This also happens when selecting files or folders in other applications.

I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit.

Any ideas?

Answer:Clicking on a folder name defaults to edit-name mode

Hi to All;

This is my first post here although I have visited many times to look for answers to various problems.

I was about to prepare a simple sharing exercise for a class I teach and had to think twice about the exercise as I encountered a curious thing.
Basically, I have a Win 7 installed in a VM with network enabled and connected. I have three accounts on this installation, testAdmin (Administrators), testAC (member of Guests) and an account testEmp which is a member of a group I created called Employees. Logged in as testAdmin I created a folder in C: called MyShare and copied a sample picture in it. Then I shared the folder through Advanced sharing and added the relevant groups under Share permissions giving the Administrators full control, Guests: deny read and Employees: Read only allowed.

Then I logged off as testAdmin and logged on using both other accounts to check the settings. I browsed to the Network folder under Windows Explorer and everything worked as expected. When I logged on as testAdmin again and tried to access the same folder under Network, therefore //Wini7VM/MyShare, I could open the sample picture but could not edit it. I also could not delete the picture.

What is curious is that if I obviously opened the folder as a local folder in C: using testAdmin I could edit, add or change things without problems.

I also experimented with folder security to give the same rights to the various users as I did under Advanced sharing but the sam... Read more

Answer:Admin cannot edit in a network shared folder

Ok, after some Googling and some experimentation in VirtualBox I guess I have solved it. May still need some more cracking but looks promising for now

It is about UAC (Group Policy setting - User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - set to disable).

You can read about it here - http://clintboessen.blogspot.ca/2013/05/you-dont-currently-have-permission-to.html

1- Change Local Security Policy and restart
2- Make sure your shared folder is not in a user profile, further complicates with NTFS permissions. I shared in root of C.
3- Remove Everyone, add your groups and assign the share permissions

I didn't try the Guest account. You can't browse to the shares without credentials anyway. At least with Everyone removed (includes Guest).

I will try with Home Premium now, as it doesn't have gpedit.msc by default(?).

--------------

Also I find it easier to browse from my Host PC, rather then logging on and off with Guest OS. If you close Windows Explorer and run in cmd: net use * /d
then you will reset the connections and will be asked credentials again without re-logging. Sometimes you have to wait some seconds to make it work though.

I've used Windows Live mail as my primary email, but I understand that it's not going to be supported after December 2016, so I opened Outlook and tried to set it up, but the I'm having a hard time importing my contacts from Windows Live mail. I exported the contacts from Windows Live mail to a folder on the desktop, but when I try to import it into Outlook, I got the following error: Error in syncing [800CCCD2-0-0-322]

And I also found that the Contact folder in Outlook is read only, so I can't Delete any of the contacts.

Most important to me is how can I change the read only attribute in the contact folder? I would also like to import my contacts from Windows Live Mail to Outlook, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong in importing contacts to Outlook.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

Answer:Can't delete/edit Outlook contact folder because it is read only

You are getting that error because the Sync is not done for Live Mail. You will see that if you do a search on that error on any search engine. Try booting into Safe mode. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/980534

I have a folder with icons in it which I downloaded online to import into a program I have called FolderMagic. I've had and used this program for years. After importing the icons into the FolderMagic program, I want to save this icon folder as a sub-folder inside another folder. I keep getting:

"This action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again."

I get this same message when I try to delete the folder. I've never run into this before so I have no idea what to do.

Answer:Why can't I move a folder?

Press the Windows Key + E combination on keyboard. This will launch File Explorer, in the ribbon, click View tab. Then click Options -> Change folder and search options. Moving on, in the Folder Options windows so opened, scroll down and found the Launch folder windows in a separate process option under Advanced settings. Since you’re facing this issue, you would find this option enabled, hence disable it. Click Apply followed by OK. You can now close all the instances of File Explorer via Task Manager or reboot the machine, if setting is not applied immediately.

OK, so last night I downloaded a bad torrent. I tried to delete it and a folder that was only supposed to contain 20 different files, somehow became 4,500 files, and using up a gig of HDD space, and will NOT delete no matter how many times I have tried. A friend of mine told me to create a new folder and move it into it and that should help (not sure if it will or not), but when I tried to move the torrent folder into the newly created folder I get and error message that reads "You will need to provide administrator permission to move to this folder". I am the only one that has ever used this laptop. There is nobody else. So I AM the administrator, so this is not making a whole lot of sense to me.

So if anybody could PLEASE provide with a solution with both why the file will not delete, and the 'Admin'. problem it would be greatly appreciated. Am I doing the right thing by attempting to move the torrent into another folder to get this deleted?

I am usually pretty good with figuring out these problems on my own, but this one has me stumped. Thank you in advance for any help regarding this matter.

So... I just picked up a shiny new (yes, legal) copy of Windows 7. Installed without a hitch, blah dee blah it's gorgeous.

Problems arose however, when it came to installations. Apparently there is some crazy new scheme set up where even if you have Admin privileges you cannot edit any of the core Windows folders (program files and the like), and it is causing much vexation!

How do enable myself control of my own folders? Every time I go into change the rights to said folders, it basically tells me I don't have the rights to make the action and flips a proverbial turd at me attempting to touch it's innards. I don't like being barred access from a part of my computer I used to be able to chill in just fine prior.

Any ideas? From what I've read it's a common problem, just curious what you gents and lady gents think!

Windows 7 Pro, and yes, UAC is turned completely off.

Answer:Surprise! Windows 7 UAC Madness, can't edit Program Files(x86) folder!

There are multiple layers of security on Windows NTFS systems (too many to discuss here).
There are ways around each and every one - but it sometimes requires a bit of study to do it.
Basically, it works out that - if you can't take control of the files, then you won't be able to mess things up. Once you do get control of them, you can hose your system to your heart's content.

Hi there. You cannot duplicate a folder with the same name. Either rename the folder on the external drive to let's say My Documents 2 or My Docs. Then move. Or if you want to add those documents into your My Documents in 10 open the folder on the external drive > Press Ctrl/A key combo > Press Ctrl/C key combo > Then open My Documents folder in 10 > Then press Ctrl/V key combo to paste.

Hope that helps.

You can relocate the "My Documents" folder for your account from it's properties dialog. I don't think you can move the entire users folder, at least not without problems.

As for the for the program files folder: There is a registry entry that will move this but Microsoft does not support or recommend it's use, and does warn that there are a number of issues in doing this. Moving existing applications is asking for trouble.

Hello all,

I just got a Vista Premium computer, 64 bit with an AMD Phenom 9100 processor. I'm still not familiar with many of the basic functions in Vista, but I'm pretty good at figuring things out. However, I just installed 2 of my old hard drives from my old computer (which lost its motherboard), and so now I have 3 hard drives. When I was looking at my files in one of the old hard drives, let's call it J:, I found that items had been moved around. They were in a specific order and now things have been moved since opening the HD with Vista. I already tried dragging and dropping the items to put them back in order. Only 1/4 of them are out of order, but when I try to drag and drop, it appears I can drag, but not drop. The file does not move to the new place where I drop it in the same folder. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does Vista not allow the flexibility of moving contents inside a folder? I really need these items to be put in the correct order. They are not in alphabetical. How do I do this very simple fuction? I will probably have figured it out by the time someone answers this, but then again I haven't yet, so I'm hoping for someone who can tell me how to do this very easy thing.

Thanks!

I want to move the app data folder to another drive along with the rest of my "user profile" folders to speed up the image dragging process with firefox? Is there a way to do that? If not, is it possible to reroute firefox's cache folder to my storage drive?

Answer:Move AppData folder

I redirect these folders on my domain using Group Policy. I do not believe it can be changed in the local (non-domain) PC Group Policy editor but you can edit the registry entry directly. It's fairly simple.

* Obligatory CMY warning. Its the registry. Edit at your own risk *

With that being said, open regedit (start, run, regedit). Expand to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders

You should see all of the major folder locations here. My Docs, Desktop, Faves, Start Menu, etc... By default they point to the %UserProfile% or %AllUsersProfile% and then the appropriate folder. Enter a direct path to the new location tho. So for example, you could move your app data to D:\Profiles\Application Data . Log off or restart for changes to take effect. I believe it will create the folder location automatically....

I recommend putting it in a sub folder in case you choose to move any other folders later. I create a \Profile folder for myself on my file server.

Let me know your results or if you have any questions.

Welcome to TSG!

Try this to see if it works:
Goto the folder NetHood.
Click on the folder "My Documents" once to highlight it.
In the left-hand panel choose Move this folder which should bring up a window display and in that display goto: C:\Documents and Settings
where several accounts should be displayed
Select your account to highlight the move to location
C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>
Select Ok in the Move window display panel and
the My Documents folder should be back where it belongs.

To check this out, select Start>My Documents to see if all is well.

If not, repeat the procedure with a different account. One of them should work.

Where were you moving the file to? Most likely where you moved them there will be a folder that has the same name of the folder you were moving. Are there any moved folders there?Ask and Answer. The way of learning.Dell Dimension 8300Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3.20 GHz4 GB RAMNvidia Geforce FX5200

I wish to move a folder from the admin user to a regular user. How?

Answer:There must be a way to move an admin folder

Is it a System folder?

If not then you should be able to move it from within the Admin account, unless it is system-protected. What is the error message?

If it's not System and won't budge use the Take Ownership Shortcut

The server where the network share originated is offline and will not be coming back.

Unknown to me, the user had this share set to use offline.  She?s been saving to this location for quite some time now. The user got a new machine and was wondering where that share was. That?s when I discovered she was using this
share offline.
I found her CSC folder, but need to find out how to move that folder from her Windows 8.1 Pro machine to her new Windows 10 machine.

I have found some articles relating to Windows 7, but want to know if the same procedure(s) work for 8.1
Thank you in advance.

Sooooooooooooooo i had all my i-tunes songs on my computer hardrive but it took up all my space, i've transferred it all to an external harddrive and changed the folder name in preference menu...but every song is now saying that it cant be located. I can then locate it manually and it works

But i have 3000 songs if anyone can help to do this automatically it will save me a massive job

Answer:i-tunes folder move PLEASE HELP

You're probably best off highlighting every song in iTunes, removing them (not physically deleting them) and then add again from the new location.

Here is my problem; I have a windows 7 installed on my hard drive (not this one), That windows 7 is a reinstall of a previous windows 7, thus it has a windows.old folder.
I hadn't used the drive for a while, when i tried to use it, to get my stuff off it, windows would not load and it kept attempting repairs.
So my question is, what can I do, to get both the files from the windows.old folder, as well as my documents and such from the current o.s?

Basically I'm trying to move a huge folder that currently resides on c:\users\me\desktop to c:\content.

So I've tried cut and pasting, that wouldn't work so I went to the command prompt, opened as admin and used move, which told me 'access is denied'. I'm logged in as an admin user, but not administrator. UAC is turned off.

I tried using takeown to take ownership of the folder, it told me the folder was now owned by me but still won't let me move it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Trying to move folder from desktop, need permissions

Have you tried moving the file in Safe Mode? Did you edit the permissions in the Security tab when you right click/properties to the the file? Double check that admins have full control.

ok this isnt a problem just a question, I would like to move the contents and the file path of the "My Music" folder to a seperate hard drive so that stuff will start going to that hard drive ( I just bought a new 300g to release the pressure mounting on the old one) and was wondering if this was possable and/or plauseable.

Answer:How To Move The Contents Of "my Music" Folder

You can either "cut and paste" the folder to the other drive or make a new folder on the drive. But then you have to go back and change the programs that save to it. Make sure they have the new address ie e:\ music.
Hope that makes sense...

In Vista one could move files within a folder to whatever location manually simply by dragging the file to the desired location within the folder. In WIN7 everything seems to be locked and moving a file (for example image file) to the end of a row of other files within a folder won't work. How to solve this. Any setting I overlooked?

Answer:Cannot move/copy files within folder

They don't give you that option in Windows 7 yet and not sure if they will in latter builds either.

Short version: I'm getting an error message when I attempt to move my Documents folder to a new location (same volume):The folder can't be moved here...The filename or extension is too long (see attachment).

Longer version: I want to move my Documents, Videos, and Pictures folders so they are subfolders of my recently installed Dropbox folder. I'm using the Properties tab from Windows Explorer to do this. I did the following:
Created new folders called Documents, Videos, and Pictures within the Dropbox folderNavigated within Explorer to users/username, right clicked the folder I wanted to move, chose Properties, and selected Move, then chose the destination (newly created folder in Dropbox folder) and clicked "Apply"When I did this with the Videos folder, everything was fine, and the folder (and contents) were moved as expected. When selecting the Videos shortcut in the sidebar, I'm taken to the new folder, as I had hoped. When I did this with the Documents folder, I got the error message described above. The message appeared immediately upon clicking "Apply," without the move process actually beginning, so it doesn't feel as if this is a case of the system finding a file with a long name someplace down the folder tree.

Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

(My apologies for the orientation of the attachment...the rotation flag must not be respected upon upload)

Hi All,

I don't know if this is possible, or if there is a way to make this possible on a move forward basis, but I have to drop files into it's matching folder.

I have my folders set up as such:

Building Address -> Floor Number - > Unit Number.

Please see attached. If you click on building address "123 Test Company Street". You will find folder 1 appear. When you clean on each individual floor numbers, folder 2 will appear.

In my attachement, you'll find a bunch of PDF's. The first PDF is called "unit 102". I need that file to drop into folder into "FL 01"..."Unit 2".

The last pdf is called unit 308. I need that file to drop into folder "FL3"..."Unit 8".

Anyway i can write a macro which will place the correct file in the correct folder.

If it is not currently possible, any suggestions on how to rename my folders in order for a macro to work?

Thank you for your time.

Hello,

I am having issues with a folder which I would like to delete. However, whenever I try to do that I am told I need admin access in order to do so. Problem is, I am the admin and if I go to Properties and in the Security tab, I am not allowed to do any changes and none of the users are displayed in the advanced settings window. The folder does not have any files and its size is 0 bytes. If I open it, I am prompted with a message box which says "Location is not available" and "Access is denied".

I spent countless hours on the internet trying to find a solution but whatever I could find, nothing worked.

Please help!

Answer:Cannot delete, move, rename folder

Hi, if you're familiar with the command prompt, then boot to a command prompt (e.g. via SHIFT + left click Restart), access the correct partition (drive letters will be different) and try deleting it from there.

Or try a program such as Emco MoveonBoot (which can also delete on boot).

Another option is to use a boot disk such as Kyhi's, available from the top of the Software and Apps section.

I'm on a Work PC.

They do not use OneDrive or Box Sync, so my PC is linked to my personal accounts.

Is it possible to somehow ask Windows not to display those items up in front?

I keep some work related items in these so I can sync the data with my home PC to do work there, but there is also personal information that I keep in these.

Before (i.e. Windows 7), these were kept only in the User folder.

Answer:How do I hide or move the OneDrive folder?

Hello Joe,

If you like, you could disable OneDrive integration for all users in Windows 10 using the tutorial below. You can then still access your OneDrive online instead.
