Portable Image mounter / Virtual drive / drive emulator software

Question: Portable Image mounter / Virtual drive / drive emulator software

Hi,
Looking for this for a while now. The only thing i ever came across that was close was the microsoft virtual cd-rom drive program. Which i never really cared for in the first place.

Just looking for a quick, easy and painless way to mount a iso image and the like, without having to install a app to mount it, and autoplay it, explore it, etc....

Any and all suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays all!!!

Preferred Solution: Portable Image mounter / Virtual drive / drive emulator software

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all

once you've got an ISO file on Disc you can mount it with a right mouse click on the file.

You can then use any standard software you like to access the DVD for example I'm playing a DVD (Battlestar Galactica 1980) with VLC
(can't find a replacement for W7 snipping tool but old XP application grabber_2k works fine -- file has to be saved as jpg however rather than png)
cheers
jimbo

Answer:built in "Virtual Drive Mounter" works Fine with VLC dvd player

The snipping tool is in the Apps. You can also use FastStone Capture - last free one: A+ Freeware - Multimedia & Design - FastStone Capture 5.3 (last freeware version)

However, it will not let me make a system image disc because it says the Passport is not formatted with NTFS. The properties tab on the Passport says it is formatted with NTFS as the default. Hi,
Firstly forgive me but I'm not very technical minded and wasn't entirely sure which section to put this in. I recently bought a Samsung M3 1T Portable hard drive and have an enquiry I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with.
When I plug in and install the Samsung portable hard drive manager software, it seems a quick launch icon is automatically installed which appears in the bottom right hand corner of my desktop a short while after start up.
The first issue is that a box appears every time I start up saying 'Samsung hard drive manager' which fades when I move my cursor but really is unwanted. But more importantly, when I shut down without exiting the programme I get an error message come up saying the software is still running in the background. This happens regardless to whether the hard drive is plugged in, so the software appears to run permanently in the background once installed.
The thing is I only intend to use the hard drive very occasionally and so don't really want to have the bother of an two extra clicks to exit the manager every time I shut down my computer. I would just uninstall the software but ideally I would like to utilise the 'secure zone' facility (which I assume can only be done with the software installed). I have tried deleting the drive manager from my 'start-up folder' but that didn't help, it still launched when I restarted. I can't find any options anywhere in the manager for this sort of thing, and don't appear to be given any... Read more

Answer:Query On Portable Hard Drive (software)

Download CCleaner here
Install and Run it
click on Tools - startup
highlight the Samsung Manager and click Disable
This will leave the software on your PC but stop it from starting at boot up.
you could still use the program by clicking on its entry in programs on the Start menu
If you decide to use it at start later, just click on enable

I bought a game, Oblivion, without realizing that it required a dvd Rom drive. On my gaming computer I don't have one, but my brother's computer does, so the question is would it be possible to use his computer to make an image, then use a virtual drive to run it?

Note: I didn't put the post in games because it doesn't have as much to do with the game as it does with the imaging..

If I can't, Oh well, I'll get a dvd rom drive. I'd just rather not spend the money right now..

Answer:DvD image / virtual drive the solution?

Playing an image of a game is copying the game....legal complications come to mind....Bite the bullet and buy yourself a good dvd burner...the cost difference between a burner and rom is minimal.Another member in another thread suggested this LG GSA-4167B http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/242/1

Hi there
Virtual Iso mounter works just fine on Netbook / ultra book with no physical DVD device.

Computer with physical DVD device -- no DVD in the device of course - - message "Problem mounting xxxx.iso" where xxxx is name of the iso.

However the ISO is ACTUALLY mounted and can be read from -- no problem. Just the message is issued incorrectly.

OS - Windows 8 x-64 RTM TechNet, Laptop Sony VAIO.

I have just been reading about some sofware entitled "Virtual Drive ".It apparently enables you to transfer certain CD discs to your hard drive that you were unable to do previously.Any opinions if this software it is worth getting . Cheers.

Answer:Virtual Drive software.

I've used a demo of it and it doesn't work for all games. For the games that do work, Virtual drive is very good. It displays an icon in your taskbar and you simply right click and select whatever game you have. Copying each game cd to your hard drive takes up alot of disk space. You can check what games are supported via click here. One program that I find much much better is Alcohol software (recommended to me in one of my posts). click here.

Also, I would like the software to be just the software w/ crap that bundle into it. TIA.

There are some others nowadays as well; most were waiting for Windows 7 to be "officially" released on the 22nd... and yes I tested DaemonTools on Windows 7 x86 and x64.

Dont use programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

Hello,
I've used Daemon Tools Lite recently but due to some conflicts with my OS I was suggested to uninstall it. I however need a virtual CD emulation software. Which would you recommend me? My requirements are
- 100% CD/DVD media emulation, some virtual drives don't emulate hardware drive fully. I meet this problem about 2 years ago with UltraISO's virtual drive. Didn't use it's emulation since then but I assume nothing changed.
- Support for all common image formats (ISO, CCD, CUE+BIN, NRG, MDF) and for compressed formats (ISZ) as well as support for split images of big DVDs and BluRays
- Non-intrusive interface, no deep system integration and launching only on demand
- Freeware would be better but commercial is ok too
- If possible small one-purpose application, not any allinone suite of CD burning/ripping/whatever
- Support for protected media emulation is not required

Answer:Suggestion for virtual optical drive emulation software

I don't use virtual drives often. Others with more experience will likely have some ideas to add.

Hi!

I recently reformatted my laptop's C: drive (the only one) and reinstalled Windows XP, applications, etc. I used the included restore disks. My laptop is a 2003 model and it came preloaded with AOL and a bunch of other crap that I had to get rid of. This was a pain and took forever! Anyway, I have it all set in pristine condition now. I've read about drive imaging software that you can use to make an exact image of your entire drive and store away. Then down the road if your computer gets infected, bogged down with crap, whatever, you can use that image to restore it to exactly the way it was when you made the image. From what I've read, there are many different pay and free programs, including Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, DriveImage XML, Macrium Reflect, XXClone, etc., etc.

My question is: How do they work? What I'd like to do is make one of these image files and store it on an external hard drive in case I ever need it. How do I use the image to restore my laptop's C: drive when the time comes? Do I need to make a disk? Can I plug my external drive into the laptop?

Also, which of these programs is best? I wouldn't be making regular images. Just occasionally (maybe just once). I'd rather use one of the free programs.

Thanks!

Answer:How to use drive image software

these programs usually allow you to make an emergency boot cd. in the event that even if your system is no longer functional, you can boot up using the cd, provided that you set your bios to boot from cd/dvd. and then restore the system from an image you made before and stored in an external source like an external hdd.

to make a backup, you can't store the image in the drive that you're imaging. so external hdd is perfect for the job.

i'm using acronis. although i've tried driveimage and xxclone a while back, i can't quite remember their features. just that both were ok to use.

I made two backups of my hard drive using v2i protector with a removable hard drive. The problem was when trying to restore a game,Links 2003, after the restore the game wouldn't start. Someone on their forum said that the game won't work from a restore, only a reinstall from the cd. I suppose drive image software is good for restoring winxp without having to go through activation but I wonder how many other programs won't work from the restore. Now I see v2i was bought by symantec and they're pushing ghost 9.0. Would it be worth buying this?

Answer:Is drive image software useful?

I cannot see why it shouldn't work from a restore - providing it is a full restore (including the registry) and not just the particular program folder.
Ghost was good, but it doesn't do anything that the others don't do. A lot of people are moving away from Ghost since Symantec started mucking around with it. I now use Paragon drive backup as well as an OLD version of Ghost.

In preparation for installing Win XP I have just purchased (from click here for good prices) Drive Image and Partition Magic. Haven't installed either yet, but reading the DI Quick Start Guide re System Requirements it says (for creating a drive image on CD without the need for separate CD burning software) the CD-R or CD-R/W drive must be MMC2 compliant. Can anyone explain what this means and how do I check if my drive (Acer CRW 2010A) is OK?It also states that a 'high-density' floppy disk drive is required. I haven't come across that term before; do I assume most floppy drives are 'high-density'? If not how do I tell? For info my system is 4 years old.

Hi,I had alook on the powerquest Site for you to see compatible CD-RW drives. This is what I found: click here .So, if your CD-RW is faster than 8X, then I think you will be ok.'High-Density' is just a tech term used for 1.4MB floppies (most common). Hi All,

I have a win98 PC on my network and would like to make an image of it just in case I crash it. I can't find any imaging software that runs on win98, no surprises there, so the thought is...

I run the image software on my Vista PC also on the network then create an image of the win98.

The win98 is an embedded controller in a CNC machine and has no CD/DVD or USB available, just a floppy and a hard drive. In the event of a crash, I could remove the HDD (or a new one if it was the HDD that failed) and install it in another desktop to do the restore. I am getting nervous as this controller was built in 1999 and there is no longer support available for the CNC driver software but the CNC still works fine.

Is this doable with any free software? I looked at DriveImageXML but it does not look like it will even save to a network drive let alone make an image of something on the network.

Thanks

Dave

Good evening,

I got an old laptop running XP Pro for my sister and have managed to set it up so she has everything that she needs, programs etc and it is running nicely.

My question is, what do you guys use to clone/image your hard drives?
I ask this question because I know in the not too distant future that I will get it back because she has totally mucked it up.
When I do, what I would like to do then is just backup her my documents and re-clone/re-image the hard drive back as to how it is today, which includes the OS and all the programs, drivers etc and then just copy her my documents back.

The used disk size is 22GB and I have a 32GB Kingston USB which I have already formatted as NTFS.
I have searched the net and there are many different softwares that appear able to accomodate this task, but I wondered what the best free software that you guys recommend and use to achieve this.

I got a Seagate FreeAgent Go, 640GB, and every time I plug it in, my CD-ROM drive goes missing. The first time it happened, my CD-ROM drive completely died and I had to replace it. This most recent time, I just had to pull it out and put it back in to fix it.

Any ideas what's going on?

HelloI have downloaded a programe onto my c drive but would like to transfer this to a portable hard drive. How can I do this?Using Windows Vista.Thank you.

Answer:Transfer Program from C drive to portable drive

You need to install it to your new portable drive. Check the licensing options for the software concerned. Can't just drag it across..needs to be installed to the new HDD via the original cd / dvd supplied.

At work everyone has a piece of a network drive. It is H:, no matter what workstation you log into. Everyone has their own H:. My H: is "username$ on networkname (networkidsuchandsuch). The data on everyones H: drive is separate form everyone elses.

We are not allowed to have an excessive amount of files on this drive because with so many users, the physical drive will fill up fast. Mostly everyone keeps their .pst file on it so they can access their email wherever they are. And some work related documents. Recently there was a purge of music and video files.

The question is: If I am logged into one machine, can I map my portable drive thru the H: drive so that I can access it from another workstation (I can access the H: drive from multiple workstations at the same time)?

Sorry I may not be using the right terminology. I'm not good at networking.

Answer:Shared drive and portable hard drive.

If your storage device is networkable then, yes, you could do what you are inquiring about. Your Home Folder in AD will ahve to be changed to reflect the location of the networked portable storage device.

However, attaching a portable storage device may be a violation of your company's security policies. I would recommend checking with your IT department to see about getting your disk quota raised or to see if they will allow you to use your external drive.

Question: Drive emulator ??

I play quite a few games and have kids. So I have iso images of all my games on a secondary hard drive and use drive emulators. I had been using Daemon Tools but I think it is what is causing my pc problem of late. What other good drive emulators are out there that you can play safe disk 4 protected games in or stopdisc 7 games in? Disclaimer: I am not pirateing games or asking for help to I just hate scratched cds so I prefer not to use my original discs. Kids and cds and dvds don't mix.

Answer:Drive emulator ??

I have no problems with Daemon (3 years now I guess) and I too do not play pirated games. Any more.

i would like to burn my audible books to a cd, but i have an radio(one of those combo things) that can read mp3's. audible only lets you burn as a audio cd, and nothing else can read it. is their an drive emulator that i can set audible to burn to, so i can convert it to mp3's(so i dont have to make about 36 cd's out of my 6 books) also, it would let me listen to them in foobar, wich would be EXTREMELY nice... anyway does anyone know of sutch a program?

Answer:is their an drive emulator that i can burn to

I'm not familiar with the Audible software, but is there anyway you could create an ISO of the burn project, and then use a program like Daemon Tools or something, to mount it, and rip the subsequent tracks to mp3?

Alternatively, I found this forum discussion... that may be a bit more convenient.

Hi All,
I have an HP Media Center and an IOMEAGA 1Tb NAS. Sadly the Media Center software will only record to physical hard drives on the media center. This means any hard drive or USB hard drive. I am looking for software that will emulate this and will point to a network drive this way I can record directly to my NAS. Any advise would be grand.

Thanks

Hi!

I have a sweet PC set-up, lots of ram, fast internet, high-end video card, internal blu-ray drive, HD monitor... the works. My blu-ray drive plays blu-ray movies just fine...no problems there.

Here's my problem. Online streaming sites (like Vudu or CinemaNow) only offer HD streaming options for an *external* blu-ray player connected to a TV. Does anyone know of a software 'workaround' that will fool these sites into thinking I have an external player/tv?

It's frustrating to think that I have all the applicable hardware, but don't have the interface necessary to get HD streaming.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Basically, I want to use my usb flash drive or daemon tools to burn music and then rip into lossless formats. I tried optical storage, but has not given good results lately despite the fact the cd-rw is new. With USB drive, it is a u3 flash drive 1gb from sandisk. And I have daemon tools lite on windows 7. All I know is the main idea is to have one of the two(if possible) be passed as a cd burner. The only problem is, I do not know how to do that, and any help is appreciated.

Answer:usb flash drive OR a daemon tools virtual drive to use as a cd burner.

Hi Pheonix220. Welcome .

Daemon Tools is a disk emulator, which means that it will create 'images' or ISOs from a CD or other source and can then "mount" it so that it appears to be a physical drive on your system.

I'm not sure exactly what your goal is, but I find it unlikely that Daemon Tools will be of use unless you want to creae ISOs of music for mounting and playing?

If you are more specific about what your needs are, perhaps we can be more helpful.

I have a new laptop. Aside from protecting it with antivirus/ antispyware I like to keep personal files on an outside hard drive.

My question is whether to go with a portable drive, which will derive its power from a USB connection, or go with a full external drive with a wall wart.

Portable Drive Pros:
1) No wall wart. This also means if you're using it on your laptop when there's a power failure you've got in essence a UPS protection feature.
2) More portability, as per its name. Can travel in laptop case with you.
3) Quieter.

External Drive Pros:
1) Faster 7200 rpm vs 5400.
2) Better price per Gigabyte.
3) Available with firewire and eSATA interfaces in addition to USB.

What I know least about is reliability MTBF values. My experience with external drives is that they are extremely reliable. Portable drives do not look as robust. How can I find out if one kind of drive is more reliable than the other?

Thanks,

robo

Answer:To Buy: Portable Drive? Or External Drive?

If you don't need portability then go with an 3.5inch external drive which will have its own power source.
Portable 2.5inch drives normally require two usb ports to power it, which can be a problem if ports are limited.
Not to sure why you would want to only put person files on the external drive and not the main drive though

Have a drive partition that shows in my explorer as a virtual dvd drive. Everything installeed on it works just can't access it to look at any files. Had a error on this partition a couple times when booting up windows checked everything and fixed whatever the problem was. Just need to be able to access the partition as I want to replace the drive. All other partitions on the drive work fine and can be looked at with explorer. Device manager shows all the partitions as proper size also. Any idea how to get the partition back to being accesible.

Answer:drive partition became virtual dvd drive after reboot unaccesible

Hi lentz,

Welcome to SevenForums.

1. make/model/ capacity of the drive ?

2. Internal? External? System drive?

3. How many partitions?

4. Surely this couldn't have happened all of a sudden without a precipitating factor. Has it or not? Could you think any of it? Any virtual CD ROM creating software? Anything you mounted on it? Any game CD you copied on to that partition? Was that partition accessible before? What data is there on that partition that you want to access?

We have no clues whatsoever from your problem description.

So apart from answers to the above, please post a full screenshot of Windows Disk Management ( Please remove any other external drives for easy identification of your problem drive) and also My Computer where the Virtual CDROM drive appears.

Please read and follow Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

That should help members here to see your problem in perspective and suggest possible resolutions. None can see in complete darkness.

Every time I place a virtual DVD drive on my computer it makes my physical drive disappear in My Computer AND Device Manager :/.
Device Manager then instead just sees the Virtual Drive..
I've tried to do that upper/lower filter to no avail considering I don't have those options when I have a virtual drive.

The only way for me to make it appear in My Computer again is to unplug the SATA cable when the computer is off and reinsert in a different slot. Anyone know how to fix this issue considering unplugging and replugging shouldn't be answer ?

Answer:Virtual Drive makes physical drive disappear

What virtualization program are you using? It sounds like a program error, rather than a Windows error.

Virtual Clone Drive, and MagicDisc are both free programs.

I've just got myself a new PC here, and I'm in need of a virtual hard drive or two. My laptop which I still use has been running MagicISO/MagicDisc for a long time now and never had a problem. Since both computers are on win7, I figured it would be the same situation on the desktop, but MagicDisc will not let me assign drive letters to any virtual drives, making them virtually unusable, no pun intended. The drives have question marks, even after I select a new drive letter and hit OK. I've tried many different letters, so that's not the problem. Someone on a different forum said to add more drives and they would work even if the first one didn't, but I've tried 1, 2, 3, and 4 drives, all of them have question marks, none of them will let me change them. Normally I'd write it off as crappy software, but I'm conflicted because the same exact program works so well on my laptop, which again is the exact same OS. My laptop never had the question marks, it just assigned drive letters automatically. In my frustration I tried to go with Daemon Tools Lite instead, but ended up with a completely different problem where the computer freezes during startup.

Can anyone tell me how to get MagicDisc to work like it does on my laptop? Or alternatively, is there a better (preferably free) program for creating virtual drives? I've gotten the impression that MagicDisc is a little outdated. Keep in mind this is a new machine with anti-virus software, and the only thing Windows warned me to be c... Read more

Perhaps your AV is blocking the software from running. What AV are you running? There may be an option where you can exclude the AV from blocking the MagicDisk software.

As far as alternatives, I use the freeware: Virtual Clone drive. I've never encountered problems using it. Also, in Win 7 & Win 8, you can simply double-click on the ISO and the OS will automatically mount it and assign it a drive letter. To unmount, simply right-click and select "Eject".

I have a sea gate 300 gig hard drive and I cannot get the space/size on it to change. I've re booted, taken it in and out and tried different computers but they all think that there is 138 gigs free of the 300. I have a folder of stuff that has said "24.3 gigs" via properties for about a week now though I can open and close the files, play videos in it, and have added about 15 gigs of stuff to the folder. About 3 months ago I created a partition and made most of the 300 gigs FAT32 so I can play it on my ps3. I've had no issues until now. Also, I have the exact same hard drive also in FAT32 and it suddenly will not show up and it appears to be doing the same thing. When I delete files from the folder, the image still shows as it being filled with that file (on my computer). Though moved files etc still work with no issues on my computer.

I have vista, if that makes a difference.

Hi,

I've got a complete Drive Image [ver 7] of my XP Pro SP2 OS backed up onto a DVD, verified and am 99% sure it's ok. However, my OS is currently running as J Drive (this happened as I'd installed a Multi Card Reader - they took preference on Drive Letter selection!) so my OS couldn't install as C.

However, I've now removed this card reader. I am about to format my HD and reinstall the Image on the DVD. Will I be able to install it to the usual C Default now or will I have to install it back to J Drive? I'm worried that any Registry settings, Program settings etc from the Image on the dvd will be confused if my OS drive letter is changed.

I've got Partition Magic 8 which has Drive Mapper but I haven't used this - will it help? It looks like it's not really for altering the OS Reg entries, it looks like it's for altering the other partitions and their drive letters.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My c: drive stopped working, so I installed a new drive, copied a lot of files from back up, and I think merged some Registries. I had my old Virtual XP machines working, complete with their programs installed. Then I did "one more thing" to the

system check file, and it says my system can handle virtual machines. I've checked Windows Features, and it has a check mark for Virtual PC. When I install Windows XP (WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe), it completes the install, but, when I click to open it with Finish,
it says it can't.  When I try to install Virtual PC from Microsoft's current installation page (Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu), it says it isn't compatible with my version of Windows.  I found the original Virtual PC file from backup

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

I recently installed a virtual serial port emulator, VSPE by Eterlogic that I use in conjunction with a software controlled amateur radio. Using this emulator allows me to run an external desktop meter to monitor signal levels from the radio. It works very well. However, everytime I reboot the computer I have to reconfigure the emulator. The emulator is in my start-up folder so it does come on at boot-up but it still needs to be configured. The manufacturer has instructions to automatically load this software already configured by using the "command line", but I can't figure out how to do this and need the procedure to do this. I'm using XP Pro. Here are the manufacturers instructions.

To make users life easier VSPE supports command line parameters.
For example it can be used to automatically load configuration at Windows startup. Warning: only one VSPE instance can exist at the same time !
Usage:

Config file is a special file with extension ".vspe" that can be created using VSPE "Save as..." command.
Options are additional parameters that can be passed to VSPE to manage its basic behavior.

-hide_splash : do not show splash window

We recently purchased 10 Dell Optiplex 5040 desktops.   On one of them I built a Windows 7 32 bit configuration.  I wished to capture an image of it using Ghost and save it on an external drive.  The USB stick that I used has been used successfully many times on a variety of machines.

When I boot from this USB it boots successfully to X:\Windows\System32 and then I can navigate to D: as the local drive.  When I try to navigate to E: the message is “the device is not ready”.   When I try to navigate to F: the message is “the system cannot find the drive specified”.

I have tried using all of the USB ports on the machine with the same result.

When the machine is booted into Windows it does recognize and read the USB stick.  The disk administrator identifies it as 'healthy' with an active partition. The file format of the USB and the machine being imaged is NTFS.

I had downloaded all of the drivers for this computer using the Dell website’s Dell Detect program.  The BIOS settings are the default settings.

I have tested this on the other new Dell Optiplex 5040 desktops right out of the box with exactly the same result.

All of the DELL diagnostic tests have normal results – whether run from the machine itself or the Dell website.

Are there any known problems/fixes that apply to this situation?

Are you planning to clone it?  That may be a challenge since as far as I know there aren't any m.2 PCIe-to-anything adapters available yet.

You should be able to pull an Acronis image and restore that to a backup drive after installing it.  Perhaps that's your plan.

I am trying to use Drive Image 2002 on a PC running Windows 98 SE.
I had to update to Win 98 SE as Win 98 does not recogize the Seagate USB drive I have. I installed the Drive Image 2002 successfully.
When I tried to create the image, Drive Image 2002 let me selected the drive I want to make an image of (C: ) and the destination drive (D: which is the USB drive). When I clicked "Final" button to proceed with imaging, it had displayed a message telling me "the job I want to do requires reboot". I clicked YES button, then it went on to do its reboot. Then I got an error with an error code #626, basically telling me "The destination device is not visible in boot mode".
I thought Drive Image 2002 is supposed to work with USB drive, what's the problem here? Can anyone help? Thanks.
Also, I created boot disk using this Drive Image 2002 installation. When I boot using the boot disk, I can see my USB drive. I think this is the same problem.

BACKGROUND
My 750gb hard disk is failing on a HP laptop that came preloaded with W7 home prem. I have a SMALLER excellent 500gb, 7200 rpm hard disk that I'd like to replace the failing hard disk with. I've read that my W7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C: partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb.
QUESTION
Can I restore a system image from my larger drive "as is". If not, and I shrink my C:\ partition (contain windows) to say 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?

I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. If so, and I create a new system image can I restore it to the new disk?

Please help. Thank you.

Answer:Using System Image to replace 750GB Drive with s 500GB Drive

Download Macrium reflect free home edition, make a restore CD, and either backup an image or clone the drive directly. I haven't used their clone facility but have used their image backups dozens of times and it is good and fast.

Otherwise, with windows backup, you will need to defragment the partition, then shrink the partition, then defragment and shrink.... until you get a < 500 GB partition.

Using Drive Image Pro, versions 4 and 5.

When I boot into Drive Image using either version, I get an error message that "EZ-Drive is present but not running". The error message further reports that I should remove the drive image diskette, reboot and hold down the Ctrl key and when prompted, select to boot from A drive then insert the Drive Image diskette and continue.

EZ-Drive has never been on this hard disk; however, just to be sure, I downloaded and ran a utility that completely erases the drive and returns it to the same condition as it was when it was new. I then re-FDisked the drive, reformatted and then tried again.

The result was the same.

PowerQuest has nothing on their site about this.

Any ideas?

Answer:Drive Image reports EZ-Drive present, then aborts.

Just a though, is virus protection enabled on the drive, if so, try disabling it.

My old Seagate 1TB hard drive was filled to 780GB out of the 1TB. Since I was getting close to filled I upgraded to a WD Black 2TB. I used the Windows 7 back up to create a complete system image. I replaced the hard drive with the WD then did a system restore from the image. Everything works fine and everything looks exactly the same except the new hard drive is only showing 322GB used out of the 2TB. I now have both hard drives in the computer and opened up the contents side by side, they both contain the same files and folders. The 1TB drive is showing 780GB used and the 2TB drive is only showing 322GB used. Am I missing something here? Shouldn't they both have the same amount of space used?

Answer:New hard drive using less space after image restore then old drive?

I think it only copy your operating system drive to your new disk?
You can check your disks in Disk Management. And also you can create new volumes there.
Right click on Computer - Manage. You will see Disk Management.

What is the difference between Powerquest Drive Image and Drive Copy?
I know that PDI makes images and PDC copies, but...

You can't boot from image, can you?

I know that when you copy partition to another partition ( or HDD ) and if you make it active, you will be able to boot from this copy (providing it has OS on it).

But how do you boot from an image? You have to restore it but that is not enough for it to boot, is it?

So, let say for backup purpose how do you properly restore image so it is bootable? Are there any other steps but restoring that you need to do?

Thanks

Answer:What is the difference between Powerquest Drive Image v. Drive Copy?

If the image is of an active partition, when you restore it to the same partition or another HDD it will be active and will boot.

I am using an external 160 gig western digital drive and want to know if there is a way to create a backup image of my C drive using Drive Image 2002 on the USB drive. When the system reboots it can only see the IDE drives and I want to know if there is a way to add USB recognition. Support is non existant now that Symantec took over power quest. I'm running XP Pro on a Dell 8100 system. Thanks.

Hi guys,

Would I run into problems restoring a drive image I made in DriveImage XML to another hard drive? If not, does the hard drive have to be the same size? thanks!

Answer:Solved: Restore Hard Drive Image to another drive?

Of course not, thats one of the main purposes of making an image, so you have a backup to use and to perhaps use on another drive. Most drive imaging software will expand the image to fit the size of the new drive.

If I remove the primary hard drive and replace it with a new one, install the old one in an enclosure to make it portable, can I then transfer files from the portable to the new hard drive installed in the computer?

Answer:Removing primary hard drive and using it as a portable hard drive.

If its an IDE drive you can, thought I would then set the jumper to cable select.

I have a Compaq ARMADA 4131T laptop that I want to add a IBM Travel star I.D.E. drve to. The motherboard has an 'AMP' 50 pin male plug on it to connect to the hard drive but an I.D.E. H.D. has only 44 pins. I have checked the open voltages on each pin and also the voltages under load to check which are signal and which are power but they do not correspond to the electrical interface specification for I.D.E. connections. Compaq confirm that the motherboard pin outs are not S.C.S.I. although they cannot give me any more information. If no one can give me any fixes can they suggest where I might look on the web for help.

Answer:Portable I.D.E. drive

Just plug it in and go. A 2.5 " drive is designed for a laptop and all the interfaces are the same and standard. The pinputs are indeed IDE except the cable from the motherboard also supplies the power to the hard drive.
