Question: Solved: Sound garbles when running programs

Hello, I just formatted my computer. (it was doing this right before I formatted also) When running winamp, itunes, WMP, or any website containing music, the music slows down and souds chopped or garbled digitally. I dont know why its doing this. Im running the same programs in the background that I always have. and Im usually only running Itunes and MSN Messenger, and sometimes pokerstars. My computer specs should hand this:

Windows XP
Intel Centrino Core2Duo 1.66 ghz
2Gb of DDR RAM
160GB HDD with 140GB free space.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did search but couldnt find anything. I do alot of music recording, mainly guitar tracks. When I was running Windows XP, I could have my DAW (Reaper) running and have my tracks on monitor so I could hear the guitar sound, and I could also have Windows Media player going so I could play along with different songs as I recorded, while using the ASIO4ALL asio driver. With Windows 7, I have been unable to do this, it seems I can only have one program using my soundcard at the time. Is there a way to remedy this?

Answer:Multiple programs running sound

First thing I would need to know is if your drivers are all jiving with windows 7 properly.
Also is the software fully win 7 compatible?
Have you tried setting the applications for xp compatibility mode?

Compatibility Mode

there is also a way to run windows 7 as xp, that you can try.
Download Windows XP Mode
...that can get a bit complicated to get it up and running properly sometimes though.

I can hear the Windows sound when I restart my computer or the tone when I click on the volume button, but when I start a program or watch a video online the sound will work fine for a few seconds then will cut out. I've tried reinstalling my drivers many times to no avail.

Also, when watching a video online, when the sound cuts out Firefox will freeze and sometimes crash. It's the same story with IE.

The device manager says my sound card is functioning, and I'm pretty sure nothing is conflicting.

I'm beginning to think it's the PCI slot my soundcard is in, but I'm not sure. Maybe the soundcard itself?
I'll be welcome to give any more information this problem is driving me crazy.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've only just started to realize this, but my sound will stop working if I have a combo of programs running. Mainly Skype and League of Legends. When I have those two on, more LoL, my audio stutters or just won't work at all. I'll get problem with playback device on Skype. I've updated my drivers and disabled bandwidth hogs, but I can't seem to get it to work.

If this isn't the right forum for this please feel free to move it, I figured it might be audio.

Answer:Sound lags/stops working when running certain Programs

Both of those use audio and if both are active at the same time it can cause a sound conflict. Usually only one audio application at a time can be used.

Have a friend with a very young granddaughter who likes to play the Mr. Potato Head game on grandma's 2005 Compaq desktop. She has played the game with no problems until recently. The computer's OS was a mess, so I destroyed the C: partition, reinstalled Win XP and updated it to SP-3, reloaded all the programs and restored her backed-up working files.

The computer now runs like a screamin' mini, with no OS problems -- save one. Mr. Potato Head, a Win 95 (16-bit) program, no longer runs. Can't even run setup.exe to install it. After ending that attempt and removing the CD, Task Manager still shows setup.exe and wowexec.exe running. When I 'end task', I get "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. Win 16 bit subsystems may be unstable. . . "

After seeing that, I tried to lead my friend through the Program Compatibility Wizard, but it still doesn't run. I'm not sure she's responding correctly to the questions it asks, but I think she is. I know that more recent versions of Win XP have some problems with legacy programs. . . but she CAN run the program on her Vista laptop, no problem. If this old program with run under Vista, why won't it run under XP? What do I need to do to make it run?

Hi, welcome to TSF;

please can you define exactly what the problem is, we don't have much to go on so far.

Also please can you post the spec of your system. It could be that where your system was adequate to run 2k it might be a little lacking for XP.

I have Windows XP and I use Adaware and avast!. Recently, I've been having trouble running three specific programs: AOL, AIM, and Yahoo! Messenger.

AOL will start up properly about 25% of the time, but it seems to only work when it can open the buddy list. When that doesn't open, it tells me that "AOL has encountered a problem and needs to close."

AIM gives me that message immediately when I try to run it.

Yahoo! Messenger will run perfectly for a few hours, but inevitably it gives me the same message after a while.

I have one other problem, though I'm not sure if it's related. My computer recently froze up so badly that I had no way to shut it down; holding down the power button had no effect, and I couldn't reach the Start button or Task Manager. The only way to turn it off was to unplug it, as dreadful as that sounds. Since then, messages have always come up on startup asking me to install something to do with the printer (hp), though the printer prints just fine. I haven't yet tried to reinstall the printer, because it works, but those windows come up and try to start installing things that aren't there every time I reboot.

The problem is that when I start up, I have to wait for the printer messages to settle down and stop trying to install things (they eventually ask me to locate the installation file) before I click anything (signing in to Gmail Notifier, etc). If I don't wait, it all freezes, and I have to reboot.

Most pc are set up to run windows and other programs from the C:drive.

My C;drive is slowly filling up but I do have an additional D;Drive for my data. Is there any technical reason why I cannot install a program on this drive and run it ?

Answer:Solved: Running programs from 2 drives?

No there isn't, you just have to make your own installation file, say Program Files 2 on the D: drive, and change the installation pathway destination each time since by default your system will still point to the C: drive pathway.

Hi guys, I am hoping you can help me.

Since last weekend my computer has had this constant clicking in the background, I am sure it is attempting or possibly is running a program of some description. In firefox for instance while typing this message the browser window keeps dulling out and flashing down in my start menu bar, and at the same I hear the clicks.

I hope I am posting this message in the most appropriate forum. If not, I apologize.

I am a pilot for a large U.S. air carrier based in the United States. Recently, I was sent an older CD-ROM which contains a "Computer-Based Training" [CBT] course on Boeing 737-series aircraft.

I believe the CBT course was written for a Windows 95-based computer system. When I click "set-up," I get the following message:

Dialog: "IS20SET"

"The Win 16 subsystem has insuffient resources to continue running. Click OK and close your applications, and restart your machine."

I viewed the contents of the CD-ROM and changed the "compatability" properties to "run this program in compatability mode for Windows 95."

Can anyone assist me with this issue? Can this program be successfully installed on a Windows XP Pro SP2 system?

I believe this program is "Authorware[?]"

Any help would be appreciated.

Capt. Joe

I have completed my first build, and want to get this software right before I have too much on it to make changes.
The computer has 2 drives one SSD (120Gb ) and a one Tb HDD.
I have loaded Windows 7 home Premium on the SSD, as well as Photoshop. In addition all the software for the mother board, Video Card and such are loaded on the SSD.
After completing that I brought the HDD to life partitioned some of it and formatted. I believe I have successfully moved the USER File to the HDD.

Here then is my Question: Is it possible to put only the heavy programs , MSOffice and Photoshop on the SSD. , and run all other applications from the HDD?
If so what are the procedures to follow?

Answer:Solved: Running Programs from two different Drives

It should work, but just remember that most programs still require that some of their files be on the OS (c) drive.

You are going to have to do a "custom" of each program to select the other drive.

I have no other Windows open and have tried to run it with compatibility mode for 95 and 98/ME

Is there anyway I can get these type programs to run on XP?

Unfortunately, you cannot run programs from the old drive . . there may be a few that do not register with windows ( run standalone ) but that would be very rare.

I just installed Winpatrol and then I remembered that I installed Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel years ago. Is it OK to run these two together? If not, which is the best? Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Running 2 startup control programs?

No, in order to avoid confusion you should run just one startup control program. Both programs are good, Winpatrol has some additional useful features.

If you go with Winpatrol I would run Startup Control Panel, put checks next to all startup programs, reboot, uninstall Startup Control Panel and then use Winpatrol turn off startups.

I've researched 'till I'm blue in the face, and tried various things but I can't figure out how to deny the guest user from running specific programs.

Apparently the guest account can browse right to the program files folder and run most exe files from there even if the shortcuts aren't available in the guests start menu.

Anyone know how I can keep the guest from running specific programs? (deny access to specific EXE files).

Or better yet, keep them from seeing the contents of specific folders like the program files folder.
Seems like the guest account denies certain actions that I want it to be able to do, but leaves access to many things that I don't want.

I have a number of video files on my computer that my brother wants me to put on a DVD for him. However, I have just discovered how long it takes to encode video, especially on this old computer. So, I've decided that I could simply try to leave my computer on all night while it does the encoding. I was just wondering though, if having any other programs running at the same time could interfere with the encoding process (i.e. downloading automatic updates for windows or antivirus program, antivirus scan, ad-aware, spybot)? I thought perhaps I could kill two birds with one stone if I scheduled some maintainence tasks at the same time. Is this stupid? Would it simply make the encoding go slower, or could it potential cause errors that would eventually show up on the finished DVD?

Answer:Solved: Other programs running while encoding video?

I wouldn't recommend running updates etc during the encoding process. In fact, I would turn off anything that was eating resources.

Just a few days ago my audio player(s) stopped functioning - when I put in a CD and select a player, it opens for a second then closes immediately ('doesn't matter whether it's WinMP or RealPlayer or whatever); clicking on a previously-functioning audio file has the same result.

In the last week I've downloaded and installed two programs, Gadwin PrintScreen 3.1 and BitDefender 9 Standard (trial mode.)

There are 4 copies of jrun.exe and 4 copies of jrunsvc.exe running in my processes tab in task manager. I dont think there should be that many running. I think it might have been downloaded 4 different times from different apps. Any idea why this is? Should that many be running? Should I end the process or maybe remove all but 1? Thanks.
I just checked my system configuration. It shows these progs using them.......

I've just installed SP1 for Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium.
Now I cannot run ANY programs. When I try to start an app I get message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".
I cannot even go back to the restore point as I can't run that program either!!
(I'm using another PC to submit this question).
I am the administrator on the PC, the only account.
I'm using AVG AV and Zone Alarm.
Anyone any ideas what's gone wrong?

Heya folks!

Got a little problem with HiJack This! I have the latest version and all that.

For some reason it is not showing processes that are currently running like it used to (eg explorer.exe...). I have tried different settings in 'Configure' but nothing helps.

I have nothing on the Ignore list. I'll post a screen shot of the 'Main' page under 'Configure':

Thanks for any help!

I have programs still running using the internet downloading yet it still goes to sleep after 30 minutes thus interrupting the programs.

I have turned it off totally for now but is there a way to stop it from sleeping if programs are running?

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 goes to sleep even when programs are running

Only running videos, computer games, or working tasks will keep the machine awake.

Downloads are not one of them. If you don't want the downloads to be stopped, adjust the sleep setting on the computer to a longer time.

Hi all,

My laptop has just decided to run very slowly of late. So much so that I am unable to run certain programs. Some will load up but if you try and navigate through any screens etc the program will stop working (comes up with not responding in windows task manager). This is even happening with windows explorer. I've got Norton 360, which although it should automatically boot up at start up is failing to do so. I can't even get it to run to perfom a system scan. This leads me to think I may have a nasty virus or worse still failing hardware.

I've fortunately been able to run a HJT scan and report:

I am running on a 4 year old Dell Dimension 8300 and I've reformatted it once, and repaired windows once.

Anyway, I think the problem might be my hard drive dieing, but I'm not a hardware kinda guy. I've been getting blue screens and the error messages pretty much are all about disk read errors on the HD.

I have O&O Defrag and I had a 28% of the disk fragged, which surprized me. Being I defrag once a week. So I started a much needed defragging, and my younger brother got on later that night and closed out of the defrag early. Ever since then I've not been able to open some programs, including the Defrag program.

My hard drive is a Seagate 120GB ST312002AS.

Any help would make me a happy panda.

Answer:Solved: Computer is running poorly and a lot of programs are not loading up.

Hi...see if you can get into "Safe Mode" (Tap "F8" on start-up and menu should appear near top of the menu, select safe mode). Once you've accessed safe mode and you arrive at desktop, try running defrag again- sounds as if you realy, really need to use it! Also, if this works also give "Disk Cleanup" a go (look under "system tools").

Finally having performe both of the above in safe mode, reboot and get to "My Computer" on the desktop. Double-click and go to C Drive (Your hard drive). Right -click properties. Find "Tools" and open it. Find "error Checking" and open. Once open, check "ERROR CHECKING". what you'll be doig is checking your HDD physically for file system errors and bad sectors.

In order to start these two functions, prompt tells you it will start next time you restart PC- don't wait, manually restart and the apps will begin as soon as pc starts to boot. May take a while, so be patient. All thes reccomendations are either designd to bring your hdd up to speed by either cleanng, repairing or freeing-up your hdd resources or your memory. At worst case, youll have a better idea what it is you're dealing with-
Good Luck

OK, now that I've finished posting my quandary re: numerous proposed printQueue solutions (see: Microsoft printing issues - huge list of fixes???

...here's my next quandary, re: numerous proposed solutions for Startup programs running in background (also copy/pasted from elsewhere, similar to the printQueue issue).

As usual, the numerous proposed solutions are mind-boggling for me.

If there's anyone quite technical, I'd appreciate if you can prioritize/reorganize the below in order from best-to-worst.

Thanks!

How can i stop programs running in the background when my computer starts?

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS:

Everywhere I look, the answer is to go to msconfig and shut down the programs/applications you don't want running in the background. Unfortunately, no one offers any clue about which programs are suggested for keeping Windows running smoothly. I mean, SOMEONE ought to know the basic dlls, exes, etc that Windows needs to keep it stable. Then I can stop all the rest of the junk and be happy. I can figure out what I need, as long as I have a Windows recipe.

I'm having many problems with my dad's PC. It is Windows XP SP2. It runs very slow and has its fairshare of popups. Command Service is running, and at times I see Insider.exe and Words.exe as well as many other services that I don't believe should be running. At this point, IE does not cooperate and 95% of the time, does not work at all.

I completed step 1 of the 5 step process, but due to lack of internet connectivity, I wasn't able to complete any other steps. I ran dss.exe and it was unable to install HiJackThis. I was unsure if I should download HiJack This separately and run it, or if the dss files would suffice. They are locted below.

Thank you in advance to everyone that helps.

Answer:[SOLVED] Command Service, Words and other programs running

Hi and welcome to TSF.

Your computer appears to be infected by a backdoor trojan. Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing other rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing what has been done to the computer. It may be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

1. If this computer has been used for sensitive transactions, then you should immediately change your online banking passwords and contact your bank.

2. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

If you do wish to try to clean your computer, please follow these instructions:

Okay im quite a beginner to computers so i need some assistance and heres what has happened: im on windows vista ultimate,i have been on the internet for a few months now and then it started to slow down for example when im watching videos on youtube they would play for about 15 secs then start buffering/streaming for then play for 15 secs again and so on, which made it hard to watch owt and did my head in.i was surprised because everything played perfect up until then,so i run a virus scan with the free version of avg ive got and it found 2 spyware viruses, removed and healed them, but the problem continued. ive got a program called tune up utilities 2009 on my computer so i thought i would give that a try, it found and corrected a lot things and freed some more space on my hard drive, but ever since ive used it, whenever i click on it now it just says :this service does not exist as an installed service,it says the same when i click on add hardware in the control panel, it says the same when i click on disk defrag, and a lot of other things i click on it just keeps saying: this service does not exist as an installed service, whereas it didnt say that before i used the tune up utilities,it is as if it has deleted things it shouldnt have or summat, can anyone please help me resolve this situation PLEASE!?

CC and Easy are not Spyware programs per se, they do however clean things residing in temp folders

It really doesn't make any differences as long as they get run

Not sure how to describe this properly, so please be patient with me. I'm not as good with all the computer lingo and whatnot.Ok, the problem. For some reason my computer is having CONSTANT trouble every single day. I can be doing whatever, minding my own business, when the computer locks up, any and all programs quit responding. Sometimes, everything is fine and only takes a few minutes to get going again, which is still pretty irritating. Most of the time though, everything locks up and then finally, the mouse even locks and then the screen goes all frazzled and is a total mess, kinda like nasty reception on a tv. The computer ceases to work and has to be forced to shut down. I can get it back up and running, though sometimes warning me that it can't find the operating system, though that's pretty rare. This has been annoying me for months. I've thought it was due to viruses, but even with this computer clean, it still does this. I've thought it was due to overloaded hard drive, but it's nowhere near full. It seems to do this at least twice every single day and I've had bad luck with trying new computers these days. Can ANYONE offer ANY assistance? Parents swear it's virus, but I almost think that's just a quick write-off. Best friend hasn't a clue. If I need to give anything more, I will. I have been running anti-virus stuff on and off and it's STILL clean.

Answer:Computer locks up and the screen garbles?

Was having same problem so I uninstalled IE9 and reverted back to 8, now it works fine although I am sure there are some security issues that I haven't looked for yet. If interested, google remove IE9 and it will take you step by step through uninstall.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Boot into safe mode and go to add remove programmes.

Uninstall any driver software for your video card.

Then go to device manager and uninstall your display adaptor.

Reboot in normal mode and cancel any found new hardware prompt that you get.Make sure any antivirus you are using is disabled.

Go to the ATI website and download and install the latest drivers.

I have a weird issue. Using Yahoo webmail, When I receive an email message with an attachment, the filename gets mangled when I try to download the attachment.. For example, an attachment is called 11530.csv. When I click to download it, I get this "scanning is complete and no viruses were detected" Norton Virus scan status message that Yahoo does automatically. When I click to download the file, the filename becomes a bunch of characters like this: "=_utf-8_B_MS0xMTMxMDgxXzAxMDM4ODU5XzAyXzI3XzEyLmNzdg==_="

Now, here is where it gets weirder - I can use Windows 7, (32 or 64 bit) or Windows XP and it makes no difference. I can use IE8 or IE9 and it makes no difference. I can log into my Yahoo mail on all of my computers and it makes no difference.

However, if I check my Yahoo mail with Google Chrome, the download works fine and the attachment filename is not mangled. It works as it should. Also, if I forward the message to a different email account and then forward it back to my Yahoo account, then it works as it should in IE8 and IE9.

I've tried clearing the cache and resetting IE settings. I've tried IE8 and IE9 and I've verified the problem on the same email account using 5 different computers, including a friends computer that has never been to Yahoo mail before.

I am baffled. Any idea what is going on here?

Thanks!

Over the last year I have noticed my hard drive to continually run even though their really were no activities going on, At times I checked and the activities would involve software updates or a system backup occurring. Other times I would find that it was running without any of these items happening. In any event the system has slowed to a crawl and numerous (not all) programs will not start. The only browser that will run is IE. Firefox and Chrome will not start even though the system indicates that it is running. Thunderbird stopped running. The computer indicates that it is trying to start the software but then never completes the command. I ran Registry Mechanic and also ran a complete scan with Malwarebyte and found nothing going on with the registries etc. Any suggestions on the next direction I can pursue? I need to get this system operating. I use the computer for my startup engineering consulting business and need to figure out the next step. Any help is appreciated. Hello again everyone! I was fortunate enough to save my personal files on the Acer Aspire 5745! Unfortunately, a new issue has surfaced! I did a full system restore to factory conditions and wiped the C: drive clean. I've since started adding a few things back to the laptop like Firefox, Webroot, etc. Now EVERY action takes FOREVER to load. Whether it's going to shut down, open my Pictures section under my account, Windows Task Manager, or going to My Computer it says (Not Responding) to EVERYTHING! Is there an easy solution to this? I read somewhere that tweaking some of the registry settings could resolve this but I wanted to ask here to be sure.

Answer:[SOLVED] Acer Aspire Running VERY Slowly & Programs Not Responding

Do not mess with the registry. That can cause huge problems.

Did you upgrade Vista to SP2?

Also have a take a look at this: Is your PC running slow...?

Hello there

Ok i have an older model ibm thinkpad with a 1.70GHz processor and 504mb of ram.

So as of late my computer for some odd reason decides to run extremely slow. Like I mean if you try to close mozilla it takes almost 10 seconds for the screen to go away and it will take forever to open mozilla up again?

Im running microsoft security essentials so i don't think it's a virus, but i could be wrong? Also im thinking maybe the cpu fan is broken(that is if it's not a passive heatsink)?

Here is a picture of the current processes for you folks to look at. If you see any problems please let me know what is running that should not be.

Thank you kindly.

My first post so please bear with me.
(Note: this is also posted on the Games forum as I was unsure where to put it).

::The Problem::

My nVidia GeForce (64 mb) 420 MX w/TVout
(my PC is a Dell Dimension 8200, about 3 yrs old)

Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations, and any other game along those lines that I try has serious issues with my graphics card. It flickers and randomly changes plots of land to black, ect.
For instance, in Warcraft 3, the peons have black squares flickering around them, and the trees will randomly look like they are Undead trees for a few flickers.
Also, a big fact thats important is that when the computers been on for 5 minutes, this problem doesn't occur. However, when it's been on for 3 hours, it happens instantly even if you restart it.
::What I've Done::

I updated the driver for the card, my DirectX to 9.0b, and troubleshooted it completely in Windows. I reinstalled the drivers, updated bios of my PC and called the Dell tech support line. The Dell guy and I worked for a while, adjusting settings and the hardware acceleration, to no avail. He told me that it was probably not a hardware problem, just a problem with a setting somewhere, but he had no idea what I have set wrong.

::History::
In October, the moniter that came with the computer caught on fire (no joke). So I went to Best Buy and got a Sony Flatscreen LCD moniter, which is very sweet (its model is SDM-HS73, and it tends to get hot when I don't have a fan running on it).

Possibly Helpful Notes:
- Preceding the BSoD, any sound that was playing will loop for about half a second.
- Ran an AVG virus scan, and found nothing wrong.
- It tends to happen only upon bootup, or shortly thereafter, but it is very unpredictable. Generally, if the computer boots smoothly, it can run for hours without BSoD.
- I would describe the garbled display as every pixel shifted a random amount to the right/left, with a few pixels scattered everywhere as well.
Don't know if this will help. Sorry if I missed something!

I'm new at this posting thing; if you can bare with me.

Few days ago I was switching from online radio to dvd to youtube and suddenly you-tube played but I didn't have any sound. I went into settings to Sounds & audio devices and I believe it was here where I saw a list of 'sound areas' such as Outside, Concert Hall, Basement, etc., but I dont believe it was the 'Sound Schemes'.

Any way all my music and DVDs and such now sound echoy like a concert hall and it is with every microsoft and non-ms. program. I've been to the control panel so many times, I don't know what to do anymore. Grateful for any suggestions!!!!

I think I could probably fix it if I could just find a 10-band equalizer. There was always one it my other computers but not on this one.

Went to SupportSpace....Steve B. fixed my problem W/in a matter of minutes. Then of course when I saw where he went, I'm all Oh yeah Glad this site is here anyway!!

I am trying to restore my dads Toshiba Satellite laptop to a good state as it has been running for years without any regular service and was running extremely slow.
So far I have -

- Restored laptop to factory settings
- Installed Avast Antivirus Free
- Installed over 100 'important updates' from Windows Updates
- Defragmented hard drive
- Run Avast thought a Boot-time Scan
- Run TDSSKiller
...and unwisely run ComboFix without the help of an expert
The computer now seems to run faster than it was (although this seems to fluctuate), and all the tests I've ran have come up with no signs of spyware/malware, but the laptop still seems to shut down unexpectedly whenever I try to run an anti spyware/malware program when the laptop is already running in a normal windows start-up.

I also have Malwarebytes installed which I'm sure I've tried to run already unsuccessfully ('i've been trying to sort this laptop out since lastnight), but most recently, I installed/run Glary Utilities 'one-click' solution and all seemed to be going well until the 'spyware checker' started to run, after which the laptop shut down again.

I fear I may have some hidden spyware or malware, or possibly caused this problem myself by using ComboFix without the aid of an expert.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance.

Hi,

About a week ago I turned on my computer (Windows XP) and it took about an hour to load. Spyware Scans (Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG Anti-spyware, AdAware) which all came up clean.

I repaired Windows XP which didn't help, did disk error checks, and defragmented the computer, all of which didn't help. I've noticed some odd looking programs when I press ctrl+alt+del and sometimes one program is taking up 98% cpu usage. Once I stop that program the computer seems to work ok. Weirdly enough, the two programs that I stopped were aawservice (seems to be involved in AdAware) and one that's involved in Spybot.

Is this a spyware problem? And how do I get rid of some programs that are running on startup and which ones to get rid of?

Thanks in Advance!!

Answer:[SOLVED] Computer Running Extremely Slowly and Unknown Programs Using up all Memory

Did you just uninstall McAfee recently? Did it happen around this time when you noticed the major slowdown? Go to your Add/Remove Programs panel and confirm that all your McAfee security related programs are uninstalled.

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop McDetect.exe
sc delete McDetect.exe
sc stop McTskshd.exe
sc delete McTskshd.exe
sc stop mcupdmgr.exe
sc delete mcupdmgr.exe
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Delete this folder:

c:\program files\mcafee.com\

Restart and see if there's any improvement.

My computer is running so slow. I'm constantly getting "this page cannot be displayed" when using IE. Those "free" malware scanners keep finding all sorts of errors/spyware/etc., but none of them will remove it unless I get the paid version, which I want to avoid doing if possible.

Also there are several programs on the add/remove programs list that I would like to delete, but I can't delete them for various reasons.

I type my document in Microsoft Word on my laptop computer and put them onto a flash drive from my laptop. When i go home I put in my flashdrive to sent the document by email and it goes through, but is all garbled on the receivers end.

Answer:word document on flash drive garbles in email

There are a lot of steps in between. Does the file open on the flash drive? What about when copied to the computer? What version of Word was it created with? Using standard fonts? Any special coding? Does the receiver have the same version of Word installed? Is the problem with just one recipient?

Two things. First, my virus scanner, Trend Micro, has picked up and quarantined several viruses in the system volume information folder. I then went and tried to get into the folder, but was denied access. When i click to open it is says "C:\System Volume Information is no accessible. Access is denied." Second, when i look in my task manager and the processes that are running on my machine, i often see a weird program running that is named with random letters and numbers like "QO8F91.EXE." When i end it, another one, with a different name, comes up the next time i use my computer. Below is a scan from hijack this, which shows the weird program running. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone can help me - I need help with onboard sound and a pci soundcard working together. The reason being, I play Eve alot and use Ventrilo at the same time, now I want to put just vent (the people speaking) through the headset and have Eve sounds play through my main desktop speakers.

I was wondering if it's possible to have Eve play through my Soundblaster Audigy 2 PCI card (slot 2 if it means anything) and use the AC97 onboard sound for microphone and vent speak? At the moment I have AC97 disabled as I installed the new card and didn't want them conflicting. However, I tried enabling onboard sound last night and I got a code 10 - cannot start message. What does this mean? Do they conflict? Is there anyway to get them working in tandem, but not for the same program?

When I did enable AC97 I did get the mouse ticking through my headset, but mic didn't work and I didn't hear any real sounds, plus the card wasn't recognised in the volume settings.

If I can't get them both working together (although a quick google turned up people that have been known to do it) how can I do the same just with the one soundcard? (i.e. have a game playing through speakers and vent through the headset?)

Thanks guys!

Answer:Solved: Running 2 Sound Cards (onboard/PCI)

Good Evening danskibee, having two sound systems in a machine is not all that difficult to set up and can be made to operate within limits with care.

Invariably any odd activity will cause this delicate arrangement to foul up and then it becomes a real nuisance.
I would strongly suggest you consider keeping the system simple and only using one device.

Sorry that is the only suggestion I can make.

I've been trying to fix my brother's computer for a while, but every Spy-bot and Ad-aware continuously find 60+ bad items and something has recently caused most programs to stop working completely that can be solved with a restart and crossed fingers. Recently a restart brought up a very colorful rendition of the screen that wasn't a good sign as I try to fix the computer. So I turn here. I'm pretty sure I got rid of the 'win antispyware 2005' malware he had running for the longest time. I had ZoneAlarm (deactivates the Windows default firewall) for a long time then had to uninstall it for Medal of Honor:Airbourne which required the windows firewall to be running (to add itself to the allow list). Then I got Jetico Personal Firewall and I've had Avast! On-Access scanner for the entire ordeal. I think that's about everything. Extra.txt is attached.

Edit: I tried the panda activescan. I downloaded the plug-in, but after 1.5 hours of running the scan it remained at 0%. If it's neccessary, I could run it overnight.

You need to install the programs in both OS's, & a licence for each install.

The past three days, it's happened about twice a day to me. Just at seemingly random times, my currently running programs stop working and attempting to open new programs just results in the program's icon being momentarily highlighted in the taskbar, and then it disappears, as if the program automatically closed itself. This even works for simple programs like Notepad or Paint. Any currently running programs usually crash or stop working. All of my tabs in Chrome will have the pages using Shockwave crash, and attempting to open any new tabs or navigate to new pages will just result in a white screen. The computer is fast and responsive on the desktop (ie, I can open and close the start menu and highlight programs on my desktop with a mouse rollover), and nothing on my computer is frozen, just not working.

This all happens just at one single moment when everything stops working right, and I have to manually shut down the computer, because going through Windows to shut down or log off does not result in anything. Upon startup, everything is back to normal. CTRL+ALT+DEL command results in a black screen with the cursor visible, but nothing happens.

I was recently infected with quite a bit of malware, but as far as I know, I got it all off. I don't know if this is was "malware" or just my computer being a bleep. What do you guys think?

Answer:Currently running programs stop working, and new programs won't start.

What malware did you find and remove?  What did you do to find and remove it?  You may not have gotten all of it.

I noticed this issue a little while back. As I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.
A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background.
I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

I really hope this makes sense.. it's getting frustrating.

Answer:Two desktops running at the same time. Background programs running.

It sounds like you have a virtual desktop.

This is not something that could 'just happen' in Windows 7. You would need to install a third party program to do this.

So if you did not install anything that might add virtual desktop capability, or this is not a situation where you inherited or obtained this computer from someone else and are not quite sure what is installed on it, then I would suggest first running virus and malware scans to start.

Hi. a while ago I used msconfig to remove some programs that automatically on startup but now I have noticed that close to all of my services and startup programs have stopped loading on startup even though they are all checked in the msconfig window. I have tried rebooting in diagnostic startup but I haven't been able to fix it. I used the admin tools to set some services to run automatically but it doesn't help Steam, Norton, and my other programs to run and many services revert to manual startup. I also cannot run any programs, the only ones that seem to work are norton scan and firefox. Wizards and the system restore tool won't open, I don't know what to do

Answer:Startup programs not running, programs not opening

Try and use Start up CPL to add the files back to start up

To use start-up CPL

Click Start
>Control panel
>>Double click on 'Start up'

When that is open go through the tabs and add the programs you want to load on start up

Answer:computer running to slow, to many nothing programs running

Hello and Welcome to TSF

I see nothing malicous in your HJT log but I see you have P2P software installed on your machine (Morpheus). We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to infections.

There are some processes that you do not need running at startup, you can click Start/Run and type in msconfig. Click the start-up tab, here is where you will find everything that is running at start-up and also remove from startup.

Please create a restore point before attempting to stop any processes from running for safety reasons

I don't know what happened but now if I have two programs with sounds open It will only play the sound from the program that was opened first. Say i hate itunes open and then I open Pro Tools the sound wont play in Pro Tools. Or vise versa. This is killing me and I dont know what is going on. Never had a problem before.

The main problem I'm having is I'm recording samples into my FL STUDIO 8 from my record player via the digidesign audio driver and when i go to play the audio I record in FL Studio's Edison it wont play in FL studio because its "two" programs playing at the same time. So I have to close the program and start from where I left off just to hear the sample. SO ANNOYING!

Please any help will do!

Just got my guitar pro 5.2 on my computer,
And the sound isn't working when i push play,
This has also stopped working on powertabs,
I found that my SndVol32.exe was missing and re-installed it,
Still not working, any suggestions would be very very appreciated!

Answer:Sound not working on programs that use a midi sound file (Guitar pro, power tabs etc)

Doubleclick on the speaker icon in the system tray. Click Options then Properties, check all the boxs to show all the volume options. Then click ok. On the main speaker screen, make sure nothing is muted and everything is turned up (Microphone and CD Player shouldn't matter).

Alright well to start this I don't know when it began. Maybe a couple days ago however am not sure exactly how it all occurred. So I am running into a issue with my laptop where it will run certain programs but not others and it is causing some rather large issues with things.

List of Programs that Work (A Very Short List):
Google Chrome
Windows Task Manager
Google Talk
Trillian
Kaspersky Pure 3.0

Programs that Don't Work:
Windows Media Player
Media Player Classic
Steam
Gamestop Now
Apple QuickTime
Apple Itunes
Many others don't work. They crash without ever once showing any sign of launching.

This is a huge issue as I cannot watch any videos on my laptop at all currently and I need to be able to watch videos due to classes.

Steam launches, updates, then crashes when it goes to load the main program. QuickTime and WMP and MPC all show no sign of loading at all and just fail to launch.

I have attached a screen grab of my processes running. Do need some help as this is a HUGE annoyance. I cannot find my re-install disk that came with the laptop so some help would be AWESOME! I might have a restore point from a long time back.

If additional information is needed please say so.

I would also like to note that I did a full system scan. Didn't find anything in the files, system structure, registry or anything else computer was clean.

Note:
I am not computer illiterate and have no issues messing with my system registry if needed to remove something that is running.

Answer:Programs Crash Upon Running (Not all Programs) Need Help.

One thing for sure, in that picture you have too many instances of Google Chrome running, may be impacting resources available. If Chrome seemed to be actually closed when you did the screenshot it could mean Chrome isn't removing itself from RAM when it is closed.

Hi guys, i tried sifting through the forums for something similar but i can not find anything like my problem.

The problem is when i play games after about 10 minutes sound in that program and only that program will stop. If i am in skype with someone or i have iTunes playing music in the background, none of that stops. It happens from low end games like fallout 2 to mid level games like league of legends. In leauge of legends if i go into sound options and mute the sound and then unmute it the sound comes back, thats the only game it happens on.

I'm using an on board sound card, everything is seems to be unto date. i was wondering if any one had had similar problems like this. I get the feeling its a piece of hardware dying somewhere, is this a symptom?

Any feedback would be greatly appriciated!

Answer:Games completely lose sound but other programs keep sound.

sounds more like a driver issue. Make sure you have the latest sound drivers installed for your system.

I downloaded at least five sound recorder programs on my new hp notebook computer (All Sound Recorder, Easy Recorder, Advanced MP3 WMA Recoder, etc.) ........

My experience with all of them is the same:

When I try to record from (say) a song that is playing through iTunes --- I hit record and everything looks OK. However, when I go to play it back on itunes or Windows Media player ---- there is no sound.

When attempting playback in iTunes - the little thing moves, to indicate that a recording has taken place and that the song is "playing" -- but there is no sound.

I was able to use a Sound Recorder progam on my old laptop and loved it, and used it frequently. I would greatly appreciate your help.

THANK YOU

Margo.

Answer:sound recorder programs - no sound during playback

One tip:
Click on Start / Run, type in sndvol32.exe . Once in sound volume manager window, choose Settings menu / Properties. Select Volume Settings for Recording. Check the sliders, they might be set on zero volume.
Please note: I attempted to translate the menu, button, etc. names, but the exact names may be different. If you don't find them, follow the logic of my post.

My windows XP Professional sound  system is not working porperly. When I boot up XP the Windows, the XP start up music starts to play and then suddenly shuuts off. After it boots I have no sound on my system or at best intermittent sounds. I checked my the device manager and there are no conflicts. I tried re-installing my sound drivers ( Creative Sound Blaster Audigy) but the best I get is intermittent sound. I tried almost every anti-virus, anti-malware rootkit program on your site but i stil have a problem with no sound.

I hope that someone can help with this problem.

No error messages, simply programs were not starting up.  At one point I was unable to type in anything--it was as if the laptop had parkinson's disease.  I first started to notice some weird stuff going on.  I do a virus check regularly and the same for my malware.  I eventually did a complete reinstallation of the system and  the problems started onceagain.I had done a  backup and did my system image backup and right after that, the syptoms came back.I've done several sfc /scannow, ran the DISM.exe program.  I have  reinstalled the entire system, and performed 2 system restores.  I have checked the windows update service and made sure that it was running.I 've also  done a few searches on google among other websites and found some issues with windows 10 and opening programs. I need feedback on how to correct these issues. Ethel Korman

Hello. So sounds aren't playing on the internet, and i'm not hearing windows sounds (login sound, etc). But when i open itunes or a game, i hear the audio. I've tried tinkering with settings, and discovered a few weird things. There isn't a volume icon on my taskbar, even though it's been selected. I've also seen something about changing a setting under the MDI playback dropdown menu, but there was only one option.

I also have tried a windows XP repair, but to no avail.

Answer:No sound on the internet, but other programs have sound

Go to Start/Run and type devmgt.msc and press enter in the Device Manager are there any yellow marks under Sound Video and Game Controllers? If so, if you have a name brand computer (HP, Dell etc) go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site, type in your make and model # and download the audio driver for your computer model.

I need help!
Two days ago i got a small red shield with a cross on it next to the time, saying that the automatic updates is turned off. i try to turn it on through system in control panel(which i had back then) by choosing the recommended one-this was already selected when i got there. i turn it off and on and applied the changes, but the shield is still there!

Today I got the words VIRUS ALERT! next to the time, and my c:\ drive was gone from my computer, and some programs disappeared from my desktop.
I also got a whole bunch of pop ups saying that there were attempts of hijack on my computer through spyware.
I don't have the exact message because it has stopped after i went through 3 failed attempts of system recovery through my checkpoints, and in the 4th one i rebooted through safe mode. a black screen just came up, no programs on the desktop.

i rebooted again through normal mode and NOW there is a new theme, desktop background, but my computer was gone from the desktop, task manager was disabled through restricted access, my folders are gone from dsktp, all programs on start, control panel and run. But the VIRUS ALERT! & pop ups are gone.

I got the Remove Restricted Tools program from here: http://www.ghiath.com/?p=30
this enables me to access task manager.

I am now running a full scan using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (still running...system really slow) I really don't want to resort to a full system restore...but i really want to get this fixe... Read more

Answer:Solved: HELP ME: Desktop programs, My computer, control panel, all programs gone!

after the mbam full system scan i removed all the threats found. i rebooted normally.

NOW i am back though to where i was before the system restore through recovery checkpoints (same theme & background). I have the VIRUS ALERT! on the taskbar, but my computer and my folders are back on the deskstop. The c:\ drive is still missing in my computer, and All programs is also missing from the start menu. The red sheild (mentioned above) has gone too!

i did another scan, this time a quick one using mbam, and it found some more threats. I will delete this like before. but i still have the feeling that it will not fix the problem
the mbam quick scan log is below also.

I noticed today that a new folder called 'Programs' suddenly appeared in my All Programs List. I try to click on it, but nothing drops down. So I do a little digging and come to find out that it is the folder that houses some of the links to programs. The file is located at C:\Users\Kyle\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. How do I get it off? I suppose it really isn't a big deal. I just like things a certain way. Thanks.

windows 98, ie6.0 service pack 1, 466mhz intel celeron, 32mb, 128 kb, 4.3gb
40xcdrom,3dagp,56k, isp comcast highspeed, (is that enough?)

I'm new here so I hope you'll bear with me.
When I hit ctrl-alt-del, the box comes up filled with abbreviations.
I end all that are hopefully not needed. Don't know if I'm ending good along with the bad. Some have to be ended 2x because they come back up in a different spot.
I've downloaded Spyware blaster and Browser Hijack Blaster and an antivirus program called NoAdware. Also runing IE-SPYADS.

Here is a list of those abbreviations-

Explorer, Easykey, Dhbrwsr, Loadqm, Pwstray, Incd, Atitask, Sbwatchdog, Systray, Aticwd32, Qttask, Cfd, Mfhmsca, Tvm, Brvzbab, Wucrtupd, Rundll32, Msnappau, Mmtask, Tgcmd, Stcloader, Downloadplus, Hpzstatx, Hpzstc03 and Dhupt (which I apparently was somewhere along the way)

In general my computer is running fine, but I know that most of these shouldn't be there. Can you tell me which ones don't belong?

Finally, there is now a program called TimeSync 1.0.0.10 that wasn't there before. Is that a component of one of the above mentioned "blasters"?

I appreciate any help you can offer.
thanks, karen

P.S. This is a great site. You guys rock.

Answer:what are all of those running programs?

Hate to break it to ya, bud, but ya got yourself some spyware! Congratulations!-Dont get up tight, everyone has it. Just get yourself a program called adaware, install and update its definitions. Then get spybot search and destroy,-install it and update it also. then you will find your computer will run faster, and you wont get as many popups as you probably have been getting. Simple solution! Glad to help!

Hey, guys. I've been experiencing a small problem recently:

When I go to open Chrome, GIMP (image editor), or any other non-native program to Windows, they don't always boot up. The blue loading ring appears above my cursor for a few moments, then promptly disappears - no programs display no matter how long I wait.

And they show up on the Task Manager, too! Only for the brief time the loading cursor is there, but still. Why is this? Windows-related programs work fine regardless, such as Paint, Notepad, etc.

I have to reset my computer numerous times in order for the other applications to work. It's annoying, and I doubt it does anything beneficial to my computer's health.

If anyone can help, that would be appreciated.
