crackling sound/distortion - sound card had it??

Question: crackling sound/distortion - sound card had it??

In the last week, all sound on my laptop has started to crackle slightly. I changed headphones, but realized that thats not the problem. If i increase volume, the crackling gets worse, and distortion really sets in. Strange....only started happening last week. I have tried reinstalling my sound card driver, but no change there. Have looked around all my audio settings but cant find any clues. music etc is still listenable, but there is just a faint crackle constantly annoying me. and distortion if i turn the volume up louder.

Does this mean my sound card is wearing out?? or is it a physical prob inside?

my sound card is : Conexant AC link audio
i have windows xp home edition on a HP compaq nx4800

any help would be much appreciated!!

Preferred Solution: crackling sound/distortion - sound card had it??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Motherboard Asus A55BM-E

Any Help would be great

Answer:Sound Distortion and Crackling

The noise problem was a common problem on Win 7, and to a lesser extent on Win 8. There isn't a "one fix" for the problem. Some of the problems can be traced to sound drivers, others to Video drivers, power supply, etc.

Suggest you download and run the Resplendence Latency Mon program. That may get you in the right area.
Resplendence Software - Advanced System Tools and Developer Components

A side note, if you are using the SoundBlaster, disable the on-board audio in the BIOS to avoid conflicts. Unlike Windows XP, newer Windows only allows one default audio playback device.

Hello,Wondering if anyone can help me: recently my desktop just developed sound crackling/distortion through headphones and speakers (all audio devices work perfectly on other devices such as phones, laptops, other desktops...).The crackling worsens when more work is being done, especially when playing a game e.g. Subnautica, Overwatch... or watching 1080p 60fps videos whilst performing other tasks such as updates. The lastest GeForce Game Ready driver is installed. As well as crackling and popping sounds, the audio will sometimes stutter, speed up or slow down.I recently upgraded from a 300W PSu to a 450W Psu, because I realised the instructions that came with EVGA Nvidia GT740 GPU advised a minimum 400W PSu and I was under the impression that maybe the PSu was straining. No improvement. Was any damage already done? I was using 300W with this GPU for about 4 months before switching PSu's. The problem started about a week ago.I've heard of a range of possible causes - from drivers being executed for too long, to the motherboard being on its last legs. I'm not sure how to go about this though... I'm sorry if this should be in Software instead of Hardware.  Hope this was informative. If you need anything else, please ask. All desktop specs are listed on my profile summary. Many thanks,

Answer:AUDIO: Sound crackling/distortion

From dictation.Hello, I see that this thread has been posted in hardware. Crackle snap pop noises in sound almost always come from some kind of hardware problem. So some questions about your hardware needed to be answered. Is this computer one that you have built yourself? Or did somebody else assemble it for you? Either way, did this problem always appear from the beginning?Let's just say that your video card is the problem. If so, then removing the video card and going back to built-in graphics should resolve the issue. Would you like to give that a try?Now let's consider another way to prove that it's not software. If you're using Windows 10, you can make a portable Windows 10 operating system that sits on a USB drive. That option is called Windows to go. Look around and you should find it somewhere on your system. If you can use that, reboot your computer and have it boot up Windows to go from the USB device. Then try listening to some music or watch a video. You should be able watch videos without doing any installation of anything. The Windows to go will have a slightly different set of drivers than your standard Windows. The Windows to go drivers should be as good as the drivers you are already have. If it is a software issue, then the problem should go away when you boot up a slightly different version of Windows. Well, at least that's what I think. But let's say that neither of the above resulted in anything positive. So now some questions a... Read more

Hello all,

Let me first start off by saying I'm a very advanced PC user, so no need to dumb anything down unless otherwise stated. Here is a list of my hardware:

EVGA 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard (onboard sound disabled)
Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.0GHz
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3
Two EVGA 9800 GTX+'s currently not in SLI due to bug being mentioned.
Creative X-Fi Elite Pro
Operating on Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Now onto the issue. I recently purchased the remnants of a friend's PC after he upgraded, he assured me everything was in working order and he had no trouble and his word rang true. The only issue he claimed to have was in a strange combination of attempting to run World of Warcraft and Skype at the same time while SLI was enabled. I unfortunately have had worse luck with SLI. Upon enabling it and starting any 3D heavy application or game, a strange crackling begins to occur whenever anything even slightly bass heavy plays, and then grows worse from then onward. I've first tried the simple stuff, reseating cards, dusting them off, making sure they don't share any power leads with one another. Then went on to more advanced stuff, downloading Daniel K's (if that's his name, can't remember) 2.0 Support Pack for the creative cards on Vista/7. It didn't do anything to improve it. My friend said he never had an issue like this, but he was using a Razer soundcard I had given him for his birthday at that time. That is why I'm confused as to if it is a hardware or softw... Answer:Another sound crackling/distortion issue under Windows 7 x64

An update for something I just attempted, which was to swap the video cards in the event that was an issue, same result. An added symptom I forgot to mention was that if I let it go on long enough, the crackling and distorting will eventually force all sound to quit, or only stick to the left channel.

Hi, I have no problems with sound on my PC, but when I watch streaming video, either in Firefox on IE, a lot of the videos, but not all, have a lot of crackling or distortion on them, especially noticable on louder parts of the videos. Here is an example of a youtube video in which the sound crackles a lot when the video gets louder: Code: Is this just how the video is or is there something wrong with the sound on my PC? I do not have another machine to test these videos on. It happens not only on Youtube but all online videos. I tried downloading a problematic Youtube video to see if it would play ok offline but it still has the crackling sound, playing offline in VLC or Windows Media Player. All my volume setttings in the control panel are set to 50%, so it shouldn't be an issue. Both sound drivers and Flash installation are up to date.Otherwise the sound on my PC is fine. Please can someone help? Thanks

Answer:Crackling/sound distortion on streaming video

Sounds like it could be an issue with your router having issues pushing enough bandwidth for the vid. It's kind of a stretch, but it could be it. The packets are obviously not getting to your computer the way they should. Are you using some kind of satellite internet connection? You might be having an issue with the real time protocol that streaming media uses (I think, it's been a while since N+). Hell, just try resetting the router.

Hello, first I would like to say that I have searched lots of threads about sound distortion, crackling or bad quality and haven't found any solution. Specs of my computer are:
MB: Asus P8Z68-V
CPU: Intel i5 2500k
PS: Corsair HX650W
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Since I bought my computer I started to hear little crackling during listening to music, watching movies, playing games or looking videos on YouTube. Even Facebook pop sound when you get a message is distorted. I have started to search what is the problem and googled any solution. Unfortunately nothing. After a year of torture because I am recording a lot, I have bought Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium sound card and hoped it would be better, It is not. It is the same as it was. I have even turned off the motherboard sound card in BIOS. Nothing. Does any one know any soulution please? Thank you very much for any answer.

Answer:Sound crackling and distortion, Asus P8Z68-V, Realtek and SB X-Fi Ti

I have a Sonar X2 recording studio.

There is no "one fix" for the problems you have. Each one can be different. Drivers are one item, including video card drivers. Wi-Fi can cause this, close proximity to a cordless phone or cell phone, etc.

Download and run the free DPC Latency checker and see what that shows for your system. High DPC latency (different from audio latency) can be an issue.

If you are using a separate sound card, the integrated does need to be off in the BIOS or they can conflict.

Some types of motherboard monitor programs can cause problems. I have a gigabyte motherboard and it came with a program to monitor and control some BIOS (UEFI) items from Windows. That program caused very high DPC latency spikes in my new PC when I was debugging it for recording.

I recently purchased a new Dell desktop running Windows 7 64bit with an i7 980 3.33 ghz processor and 12 GB of RAM with a PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card.It has the latest drivers, which I have uninstalled and reinstalled plenty of times, and works beautifully except for the odd random moments where it turns my audio robotic and twinkly, which I can only solve by unplugging my speaker jack and plugging it back in, or changing the speaker configuration from 2/2.1 to 7.1 or 5.1 and saving settings, or restarting the application that is playing sound - DVDs, itunes, the internet; everything is affected by it. I have also tried lowering the system volume as some forums suggested, but to no avail.I've spent the last two days troubleshooting it in every conceivable direction, and it's pretty frustrating, and I can't seem to contact Creative because their measly email support form requires a serial number I can't access because when I take the screws out of my case it still seems cemented in place, so I can't access the sticker without taking a hammer to it.Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Sound card distortion help!

I'd have Dell replace the sound card. If the problem is resolved by removing and replacing the speaker plug, that's a physical problem not a driver issue.

I've had my new sound card for over a week now, and I've had constant problems with the sound since then. It's better than the complete lack of sound I had before, but now it's starting to get on my nerves.

My SB 5.1 VX card constantly makes crackling noises when in windows and other audio is not playing besides regular windows sounds (folder opening, errors, etc) and even with all volume set to maximum, it's still incredibly quiet all the time.

I use a pair of headphones, although the speakers have the same issue when I use them. Neither speakers nor the headphones have drivers or anything of the sort. They're both plug and play.

Any assistance fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Upgrade your drivers, which version of windows are you running? I had a similar problem with a Sound Blaster card when I moved from 32 bit to 64bit windows, that turned out to be a driver issue.

Hey, I recent put together this new rig. I'm using the onboard sound card for my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev 2.0 mobo. The sound chipset is Realtek ALC889. I've updated the latest drivers, but there is crackling/static noise when I play music.

Currently I mainly use a 2.1 speaker system. But Ive tried testing it with headphones the static/crackling noises persists. It is not constant, but it shows up periodically. Furthermore, when there is no music/sound playing the noise is not there. This leads me to believe its a hardware/driver issue and not so much a speaker/interference issue.

I'm stumped on this and any help would be appreciated, the noise is annoying.

Answer:Realtek onboard sound card: Static/Crackling noises

Do you have a wireless (wi fi) connection? They have been known to cause this. A cordless phone or cell phone sitting close by is also a potential. Video card/drivers have also been another issue.

There are many possibilites and many forum posts about this problem, here, on the Dell users forum and other internet computer forums. No "one fix" for the problem.

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

Hello. If it made the noise right out of the box you probably should have returned it as defective during the brief return period.
Does it make the noise only when running on battery power or also when plugged into house current?

Hey guys,

I'm having a weird issue with switching between my onboard audio and my Sound Blaster Z. Whenever I set the latter to be the default device, I get what sounds like a sound repeated over and over, echoing endlessly. The reason I switch between the two is to use my headset when I'm playing a game that requires voice.

My setup is as follows -

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 - onboard audio connected to Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers

Sound Blaster Z - PCI-EX card connected to Roccat Kave 5.1 headset

I can set the Sound Blaster to be the default communications device and use the microphone with no problem - also setting the playback device to be this card in Teamspeak lets me hear sound through the headset as well.

I have no problems with switching to the onboard audio, it's just with the headset. Any help would be greatly appreciated - I have a tournament on Saturday and I'd really like to be able to get this sorted in time.

Specs -

i5 4690K
Radeon R9 390X
Windows 10 Pro x64

My sound distorts after i install virtual sound, it is driving me mad. I downloaded all the toshiba drivers.

Answer:Sound distortion after virtual sound installation on Satellite A80

did you setup your own system (not the recovery cd OS)?
Normally you should uninstall the virtual sound and all sound related devices at the device manager, then start with the sound driver and after that virtual sound again!

Unless it worked you have a bigger problem. Then I would suggest to setup a new system with the recovery CD. But save all your important data before!!!

Dear readers,

I'm the owner of a toshiba l665D and there is a problem.
Every time i have to use something involving
sound it sounds rubbish.
The sound isn't played smoothly there are pauses and there is a big cracking
sound sometimes in it.

This is not because of the speakers, I have also tright it through the headphone tube.
Could this possilybe because of a damaged soundcard.

It's sound really rubbish and the laptop isn't even 2 years old yet.

What could it be?

Answer:Satellite L665D - sound isn't played smoothly - crackling sound

I think this is not related to faulty sound card but due to old iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) driver.

I found an thread about very similar issue.

Update of the iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver) to version V10.1.0.1008 or higher should solve this problem.

I recommend trying this out!

Hi.My laptop model is hp 15g009ax.When i stop hearing song or any audio in earphones, after approximately 6 seconds I hear a quick crackling sound. The crackling sound comes after any sound that ends or After the specific application that is playing the audio is closed). I will tell you what is did to stop this.1) I updated the sound driver from hp support website specific to my model. Didn't work2) Tried the earphones in other phones and lapotps. Working fine.3) Thought the problem is with windows. So dual-booted windows with Ubuntu 14.04.1. When I tried Ubuntu without installing it, earphones seemed to work fine without crackling after sound ends. But after installing Ubuntu and checked, the same problem repeated, but this time crackling sound started coming before the sound starts and after the sound ends. This is very irritating and after reading some articles about this problem, Some said the problem is due to interference(Not sure) of motherboard with soundcard. Can you please specify the source of this problem and a solution to it.Thanks In Advance

Hi folks,

Recently I was setting up a VPN client (PacketIX), and the setup wizard suggested some Audio/Video Streaming "Optimization" tweaks. I didn't pay attention and confirmed.

Since then, I often hear some crackling / popping noises. For instance, this systematically occurs when I Alt/Tab between a running game and my desktop.

An obvious guess is that the damn VPN client messed up some sound settings, but I can't figure out what to do.

I've found a good deal of DPC latency workarounds around here which I tried in vain.

Any ideas ?

Answer:[Sound crackling ] VPN client messed up my sound settings

Try a system restore to before you installed the VPN client. (System Restore)

Then reinstall the VPN client and don't let it fiddle with the audio settings.

I've been having issues since February's windows updates with crackling sound typically in DirectX games and some video playback such as Steam. In an effort to isolate the problem out I've gone over all my drivers and dust contamination yet again this month. I removed both the 3.51 and 4.01 Klite packs and the VLC player I had been using. Registry cleaned and defragged.

My sound card is an Audigy Fatality champion series with the front panel breakout box.

June 3 2009 driver for it #

Dxdiag attached as well.

Next on my list is to see if maybe there's new drivers for my tv tuner capture board which does have sound card resources apparently.

As a side note, I use Ventrilo daily. When ever I launch it after a fresh reboot and connect to a server it locks the PC up for like 90 seconds before behaving normally and displaying the MOTD. It's done this for maybe 6 months. Whenever I have bad game problems I can generally disconnect and reconnect from the vent server without that little annoyance. I want to lay the blame at DirectX, but I've tried several forced updates of it without any improvement.

Playing in the APB beta as well, and thru tips from those players disabled multimedia network throttling in the registry which improved in game performance there a ton.
I really do not want to reload this machine as it takes an eternity to get everything back the way I like it.

Hello, about 3 days ago i bought a sealed brand new HP OMEN 17-W03np which comes with Windows 10 Home (64-bit), i noticed there were some problems with the sound which have been a constant problem since day one. Before and after any sound plays there are these pops/crackling sounds that are noticable (and pretty irritating), the sound appears to play fine after it starts but in a few occasions the sound actually started breaking and there were random pauses while playing sound. There was also this one time the volume randomly went up and down on its own when pausing a sound (in this case it was a video) and then playing it again.Random pops/crackling have also happened while i was on my browser on web pages but there was no sound sources in the web page at all. I've attempted to use earphones while testing sound, and while using them the pops/crackling sound sometimes come out through the earphones, but sometimes they also come out through the notebooks built-in speakers despite the fact the sound is then played through the earphones (which i found pretty strange). This is my first experience with HP and i have to say i am feeling quite dissapointed, could this be a software problem or will i have to send my notebook back? I'd also like to point out that no major program/software installations have been done as this is a brand new notebook so most of the programs/software in it right now are the ones that come pre-installed with the notebook. I will a... I upgraded my Win XP to Win 7 like 1 month ago.
Downloaded all drivers (from their sites) updated them... then i open WMP 11 and start playing some music. After listening to that i heard some weird sound lag, I believe its called crackling. I searched on internet found some solutions, but none worked and none was for mine sound card.
This wasn't happening on Win XP.
Oh and if i have older version of driver it works way batter (only hear crackling when my cpu goes up to 1000MB (100%) ), but then my Microphone goes really quiet like I disabled microphone boost.

Hope you understand my problem.

My motherboard is a PCCHIPS M848LU V1.2 and the onboard sound is a C-Media AC97 (I don't know the exacts of it, but I think I can find out) It has up-to-date drivers

I just bought this comp from, its an AMD Athlon XP2600+, maxtor 30gig 7200rpm hd, 128mb ddr pc2100 ram (512 PC2700, whenever it gets here...) nvidia 128mb geforce4mx440, Windows XP Professional SP1a, 52x24x52x cd-rw..onboard NIC, onboard sound.

Anyway, whenever I play *most* (I say most because a few mp3s either from winamp radiostations or mp3s on my harddrive dont crack, but the sound quality is still alittle bad) it cracks some-what badly, some worse than others.. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and messing around with the settings, no help...everythings brand-new, so think it might be defective, or an hardware conflict? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Sound crackling, bad quality (onbored sound)

Well you could visit the PCCHIPS website and see if they have any updates for the Sound.

Also try another pair of speakers, could be bad speakers or a damaged cable/plug.

Thats a fairly nice machine, however you shouldn't have skimped on the motherboard - its one of the lowest end manufacturers of mobo's.

You may be better off by simple buying a PCI soundcard - I recommend a Creative Soundblaster - and disable the onboard sound. You'll get better quality sound and better performance in games.

Hi Everyone,

This issue has been going on for about a year now, both on 32 and 64 bit XP. My computer is around 3 years old, and no hardware has changed since then.

All my drivers are up-to-date, BIOS updates, software, patches, windows etc.

I have had lots of "theories" or "temp fixes" sent to me but in reality are not suitable.

When I play music (with any player) sometimes the sound crackles, to resolve the issue I have to pause then unpause the song and it stops for the duration of that song.

My Sound Card:

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (PCI-Express) to expand...

I have found lots of information, but non suitable.

Sound issues with crackling and popping
A number of owners of X-Fi cards have come to experience what is known as a constant popping and crackling noise during use of the cards. Creative has attributed the case to be NVIDIA nForce motherboards, however many other users who do not use these motherboards continue to experience the sound issues. Creative has not provided a fix as of yet for this to expand...

I have 680i SLI NIVDIA motherboard.. but none of the above fixes work.

There's tons of websites/webpages with people having the same problem. Read more

Answer:Sound Blaster X-Fi [Sound issues crackling]

It's a bit hard to suggest without going through everything to see what you might have tried already (although I did have a look at your second link and a very quick look at the third). So please excuse if you have already tried the following, or if they seem too obvious (more hardware than software suggestions, as you have perhaps been trying mostly software, by the look of it).

It kinda sounds like something's deteriorating, and when you give it a moment to rest, it resets itself.

You haven't mentioned anything about your speakers (or headphones). Are they OK? Have you tried others, or tried yours in another computer? Can you try a USB speaker (if you haven't got that already)? How are the connections/cables/jacks?

Do you have an onboard audio driver you can try (ie take out the sound card)? Can you borrow a sound card to try?

Maybe it's a poor connection, including solder joint, in there somewhere. Hard to track down - have to try swapping things.

Is your problem confined to one medium (CD/DVD, stored audio files, downloaded music), or does it happen with all types?

Does it happen when you're eating Rice Bubbles? -D) (It's late, OK?)

Any possibility of interference from nearby electronics or electrical appliances?

Is your power supply unit OK? (Don't know why these last two items would be fixed by pausing the song, but I'm running low on ideas - maybe I'll stop here and let someone else have a go...)

Question: Sound distortion

I am having sound distortion with Shockwave. It only happens with Shockwave but once it happens it screws up all my other sounds. Then if I shut down my computer and restart it, everything goes back to being OK. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Shockwave, tried to update my sound card driver. Didn't need it.
I can't use any of my kids games that I bought because they all screw up. the sound is distorted so bad I can't make out any of the words. The picture is fine though. Real Player works fine and so does Quicktime. Unless i open up Shockwave then they all screw up till I restart my computer.
Any ideas or should I just get a new sound card and try that?

Answer:sound distortion

Hi there,

Did you try changing settings?(volume etc.)

Sound, NIC and modem tend to suffer from electronic noise. If that noise come from bus, you can't do anything about it.(This is why they created CNR and AMR slot)

If it's an electric magnetic field thing, however, you may be able to reduce the noise by moving the card as far as possible.

Question: sound distortion

When I bring my Windows 7 HP desktop out of sleep or hibernation, all the normal system sounds play in a distorted manner. If I reboot, then the sounds play normally. I have an on board 5.1 HD 6 channel audio codec and have removed the driver, then got Win 7 to find the latest driver (Microsoft) but that makes no difference.
On my purchase order details I find:
Microsoft UAA Function Driver for High Definition Audio Adi 1986, not sure if that helps though! If I try to play anything in my media folder all I get is a distorted hiss, I can't detect any 'music' at all.
I don't really know what else the try right now!
any pointers would be great.

Answer:sound distortion

I got round this by getting a USB sound card, by passing the onboard audio. Looks like the Microsoft driver doesn't work.

Any ideas. I'm running Audacity on my Hewlett Packard with Windows XP sp1 if that's of any importance.

Answer:Need help with sound distortion

It could be a number of things.

You could have some poor wiring and/or grounding from the audio system to the computer.

Your audio card may not be up to the task, there are studio quality audio cards made for this kind of use, but they're more expensive as a rule.

Answer:Distortion sound

Hi Utah100, I googled your issue and came across a few different forums talking about the same issue. They had success updating their driver for the sound card, video card, and updating the bios.

Here is a link for those drivers: Sony eSupport - SVE11113FXW - Support

For the sound card you're going to want to click on Audio (sound) and download the "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver"

Try updating these drivers and report back with what the outcome is.

Every few minutes, usually 5 - 10 minutes, the PC slows down for a few seconds making everything including the mouse lag, and whatever audio to become stretched and distorted for that duration. It started about a week ago but has become more frequent the past few days. Sometimes the PC locks up for a few seconds altogether and the audio distorts and as you can tell, this is pretty annoying. I've tried thoroughly cleaning out the case for dust and using a disk defragger and a full virus scan, ending all the programs that are taking up the most RAM and a last resort using a registry cleaner, but the problem still persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TSF rules prohibit help where torrents are involved.

I would say to un-install your audio drivers, re-boot. if no-go, make sure you have the most recent version from the audio manufacturer's site.

I own an XPS 13 - 9350 which I purchased last year.
The sound worked fine but then because distorted. So then I downloaded and installed a previous version of a driver.
Now on the 13th Aug I was asked to update my drivers by Dell. I did. and then the sound became distorted.
I called the support team who determined that its a software issue not hardware that's distorting the sound - quite possibly due to Realtek driver.
However Ive tried to uninstall this and reinstall and to install an older version but nothing.
Any help is appreciated.

After one or two days after rebooting, I begin to get sound distortion in my music and other audio. I just noticed that my CPU was running at 100% and the distortion was horrible. I never looked at the CPU usage before and I'm thinking it may be the cause of the sound distortion. Please, I need help in tracking down what is causing the high CPU usage (I have a high powered Dell Workstation M 6800 and typical CPU usage is less than 10% no matter what I throw at it). I ran Malwarebytes and Avast and found no problems. Rebooting always stops the distortion for approximately a day or two. If you need any other information, please tell me what you need. Thank you.

This belongs in a different forum section. Its not a "sound" problem, although the sound distorts its because of other system issues.

Possibly "performance and maintenance" (??)

This was just noticed by me recently.
I am running Windows Vista 32 on a Gateway dual core laptop. Most updates have been installed, but I am reluctant to install the first OS patch as I have heard bad things about that...also latest updates that just came out have not been installed as oof yet.
I don't often listen to songs or look at videos on this computer so I do not know when the problem might have actually been caused.
The problem is that at least once in any video or audio that is played no matter what player is used (IE, windows media player, WinAmp, IrfanView, etc), or what website (youtube, myspace, msnbc videos, etc) I get a "distortion". It is hard to discribe other than it seems that the audio will hitt a spot and a note/sound will play rapidly maybe 5-10 times and then the audio moves on. It usually happens near the end of the audio, but not always. Another way of possibly describing the issue would be if I was typing and then suddenly a keeeeeey got stuck for a secondddddddd.
I'm thinking sound drivers, of course, but I have already reloaded the sound ddrivers from the Gateway website with no change in the problem. Is it possible that a driver is being loaded twice and that is the issue (I'm out of ideas after that thought).
Although not devestating in its effect, it is anoying and any sugggestions would be most welcomed.

I have the Creative Inspire 5800 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers.

Ever since I have had them, they make like a sort of hissing or buzzing noise after being turned on for a while. My speakers are positioned like this:

<Centre Speaker> <Rear Left Speaker><Left Speaker> <Monitor> <Right Speaker><Rear Right Speaker>
The reason the rear and the front speakers are next to each other, is because I am in the process of decorating my room and I cannot place them on the wall behind me. If this is the reason why the sound is hissing, please tell me and I can move them. If not, please tell me why as the sound is VERY annoying.

The only way to eliminate this problem, is to turn off the speakers for a while and turn them back on again.

Thanks in advance,

Hi! This problem began happening a couple weeks ago. Every now and then, at random intervals, whatever I'm doing, my computer will begin having extreme lag. The music I'm listening to will distort, any games I'm playing will drop to 10 or lower FPS, my ping in the game spikes to 2000+, even though the internet is fine at the time. This happens when I am using offline applications as well, such as reading pdf files, or typing word documents. The problem seems to intensify as I use my computer for longer periods of times. There are no viruses on this computer, I've checked using multiple virus scans. Is this possibly a hardware problem?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Lagging and Sound Distortion

Yes, possibly hardware.

The standard test for RAM is memtest86+. Run it for 6 or 8 passes, which might take overnight.

For hard drives, use the drive manufacturer's testing tool, downloadable from the manufacturer's web site in the support area.

Get memtest86+ here and burn it to a disk and boot from it.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Have you taken a look at processes or RAM usage in Task Manager or Resource Monitor during the times that the PC is lagging??

Some info about your hardware might help--CPU, hard drives, and RAM at least.

Hi all! I've got a problem and need your help! My sound is playing up - it's been perfectly fine ever since I got the computer in the summer. But suddenly, for no apparent reason, the sound from one channel is completely distorted. The other channel is OK. I can't think of anything I might have done to make this happen myself - I've been recording vinyl to CDs via the hard-drive (using Nero 6, recently updated), but I've taken the record player and amp out of the loop by unplugging them both and the problem persists. I have a Realtec AC 97 Audio soundcard. I have tried using headphones plugged into the soundcard instead of the speakers and the problem stays the same. The distortion is there in one channel both when I play records through the soundcard inputs AND when I disconnect all external sound devices and just play music I know is OK straight from my computer hard drive (My Music). Any ideas what could be causing this people???? And how I fix it?!?! Keep it simple... Hi I wonder if anyone can help.I have a Dell Dimension PC. I am having a problem with the sound on it. When it boots up the windows music is distorted. If I play a CD or DVD the sound sometimes distorts (ie like a jumpy sound). I have tried speakers that I know work and it still does the same. Even more confusing If I am playing a CD and I go to open up a file or try to go on the internet the distortion gets worse not only that the music slows right down whilst it is trying to open up whatever I am trying to open & once open the music returns to its normal speed but still sometimes distorts.Any help would be greatly apprecieated.ThanksBill

Im having a problem with my midi sound scheme: it plays with distortion!
I have recently install a new antivirus (active virus shield) that found several trojans and a virus on Audiohq.EXE, AVS delected all. After that some videos that have recorded with a handycam started to crash. I made a system restore and the video problem stoped, but the AVS detected again a virus on Audiohq.EXE, so the problem with the midi sounds in my XP Scheme continues playing with distortion. Using winamp or WMP11 the sounds are played correctly and with no distortion at all. Should i erase the infected audiohq.EXE?

After some mysterious problem (I won't get into that now), I had to discharge my CMOS to get my computer to boot itself. It worked out, except that now whenever I try to play a sound or movie-file that has stereo sound I get a very annoying high-pitched distortion. Mono-sound works fine.
Having looked into the problem myself, I've come to the conclusion that the problem is somehow related to the fact that I have an ancient SB 16 in an ISA port. I tried fooling around in the Chipset settings but got nowhere. Might someone have an idea on what I should possibly try out. The sound card has worked fine since 1994, I know I'd get rid of the problem easily enough by buying a new PCI card, but I want to give the card another shot.

Hi I have a question about sound.

Over the past few months I've noticed the quality of the sound from my PC has been getting gradually worse. The bass response is getting trippier and the sound is rather fuzzy, with a lot of hissing qualities. Also, I have to constantly adjust the balance to get it to sound good.

My speakers are the Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 Digital speakers (the old kind, not the new ones). I've had them since 1999, so could it be possible that they're getting old and falling apart somehow?

Also, would there be a way to test to see if it's a problem with my sound card itself? (which is an Audigy Gamer by the way)

Answer:Awful sound distortion

try your speakers on another computer, that should tell you if its bad speakers or a bad soundcard

We are PC illiterate I'm afraid. We can't even fathom out the troubleshooter on Windows NT so we are hoping for a simple explanation. When we play Music CD's/DVD's in the CD-ROM instead of games we get a jumping, distorted sound, like a badly scratched record. All sound on programs (games etc.)are fine.We tried upgrading to media player version 9 and this hasn't helped.

Answer:Sound distortion when playing CD's in CD-ROM

Your CD volume is too loud.Sound from your CD's in your drive is direct from the source, sound in games etc is created by the program.Go into your Sound Settings in Control Panel or see if there' a sound icon in your system tray (nea the clock)open it and fiddle with sliders while you've got a DVD playing.CD Player Volume will be your first port of call.

I have a new Y580, a few weeks old now.  Just this past week I started experiencing periods of what I can only describe as lag when watching videos and playing games.  Framerates are perfectly fine for Starcraft 2, etc., but every couple minutes or at least every hour or so I get distortion in the video and sound.  For maybe a second the sound seems to play at an extremely low speed, making a deep, crackling noise I guess?  It's difficult to describe.  The video will also pause/skip during that time.  I was thinking that it might be me overestimating the quality of the computer (I play on max graphics), but it will even do it when I'm on Youtube of a game site.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not sure what else you might want to know so here are some specs: Y580i7 3610QM8GB RAMWindows 7 Home Premium32GB solid state and 1TB 5400rpmGeForce GTX 660MIf you need any extra info just say so, thanks again.

Answer:sound distortion/video lag

Some peopole had this problem with the y570 at least, try to uninstall mcaffe it works for most of them somehow.

I'm using an A505-S6960 and recently, about 2-3 weeks ago, have been experiencing increasingly annoying distortion and crackling sounds merged with my normal audio. It occurs during youtube videos, welcome screen, and even stuff as simple as changing the volume level. It is not consistent but occurs when I least want it to.

I have tried the following:
-Disabling devices one by one to see if the latency load drops using dpclat.exe, no positive results (lat remained high).
-Reinstalling video drivers, which also contained high def sound drivers.
-Installed realtek sound drivers, which seemed to overwrite high def sound drivers.
-Uninstalled recent security updates, no luck, reinsalled them.
-Tested if problem could be in relation to overheating, still occurs after first start, and being off for 8+ hours.
-Ran dxdiag, though should not relate to normal sounds, checked out fine.
-Disabled lan and wireless drivers, restarted, still occurs.
-Tried tweaking cpu power options.
-Updating drivers through device manager
-Bios are up to date

I see no reason or evidence to suggest it's damaged hardware. If anyone has any suggestions that I have not already tried please do tell. Thanks

Answer:Sound distortion, tried lots

This is a common problem and definately relates to a problem with the sound drivers. About all you can do is look around for more compatible sound drivers and try them out.

hey guys hope you can help me but when i play some songs the sound is very distorted and can not under stand what thay are saying very well i have realtec sound drivers

Answer:windows 7 sound distortion

Have kind of the same problem. Have installed windows 7 RC and only have static noise when any sounds are played, systemsounds and everything else. I can lower the sound and it's if i hook up it through SPDIF toslink to my reciever I get the same noise so it's not the jack. It's the same if i have windows drivers or Realteks.

I have Realtek ALC883 and have installed version 2.28 HD Audio Codec Driver. I looked in device section and verified that its the right driver installed. I've tried testing different settings in the Realtek controlpanel but it's the same, nothing changes.

Does anyone else have similar problems or a solution?

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505/500.

I keep having problems with sound.

The sound will become crackling and buzzy and then no sound at all although when I look at the speaker bar it is grrena nd moving.

I go to Control Panel and perform a SOund test. It shows the sound as moving and test results comes out ok but I dont hear anything.

Please help me.

Thank You

Answer:Crackling sound then no sound

Speakers are more than likely bad. If you do the sound test and don't hear anything + you hear odd sounds like crackling and buzzing thats going to be your sign. But, it wouldn't hurt to head over to Toshiba's website and pickup the latest sound drivers *just in case*.

Hi. I recently reformatted my Dell xps 400.. The only things I installed were :
1)Sound driver off of a disc,
2)Video Driver off of a disc,
3)Network PCI Adapter software.
In that order.

When I installed the sound driver, It did not work. It played system sounds, but they were very distorted and scratchy. When I'm doing nothing, I can hear scratching/crackling noises coming out of my headphones. I got tired of troubleshooting and left for a few hours. When I came back, my sound seemed to be working. There were still those crackling noises, but it was working. (I have this problem on both of my PC's. It seems that if I plug my headphones directly into the sound caard I get them, but if I plug them into the front of the computer, the scratching noieses are dramatically reduced. I had the headphones plugged directly into the soundcard at the time).

After 30 minutes of listening to the radio, it just stopped playing. Now I cannot hear any system sounds or anything; all I get are those scratching sounds.

What might be wrong?

PS: Here is Dell's driver webpage for the xps 400.I have not downloaded any of these yet. WHICH DRIVERS ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY?

PSS: I don't have any antiviral software at the moment. Is it imperative that I get some as soon as possible?

Edit: I plugged the headphones into the back and I can hear sond. It is extremely distorted like it was originally.

Question: Sound Crackling.

Hello all,
I have a refurbished Toshiba Satellite L650D laptop that I got exactly a year ago. Lately I've been having a problem where the sound goes crackly and even distorted when playing, and up until today I thought it was just me playing sounds too early because it would always go away a few minutes after start up.

Today it stayed around for 10 minutes, before I rebooted. After that it seemed normal at first, even the startup sound wasn't distorted, but about an hour later there is still at last some crackling in my music. It doesn't just happen with window's media player, but youtube as well and it first started to show up around october when I played Skyrim (I just blamed how much memory the game takes up).

I've tried disabling the enhancements (which seemed to be the solution for most others with this problem), I have done virus scans, I have even used the task manager to end some non essential processes that took up memory.

I have noticed in my searches that most reporting similar problems found it got WORSE the longer the computer was on, while in my case it's usually at its worst around startup.

I'm been having trouble lately with my PC. Admittedly it is 5 years old, however I don't really have the money for a new one at the moment.

What is happening is that when I run a game that it has never had any problems with before often everything slows down and the sound starts to distort with a crackling noise. This has been most obvious in Race 07 when there is a full grid of cars around me. Everything practically stops at this point. Normally I would chalk it up to the computer not being powerful enough but it has never had this problem before in that game. It sometimes also happens when watching a HD Youtube video. Some less intensive games such as Super Meat Boy seem to be okay.

I have also had an occasional BSOD on startup, I took a photo which you can see here.

I have the system information from dxdiag here.

My guess is the graphics card is on it's way out but apart this everything else is fine so I am hoping there is a fix for this. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Crackling Sound and Lag

The BSOD is referencing nvlddmkm.dll - which is a nVidia driver file.

Go to Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA and update your GPU drivers for your card to see if that alleviates the issues.

Question: Crackling Sound

When I listen to music using Winamp or Windows Media Player (CD and MP3) after a while it gets crackly and sounds funny. If I stop it then play it again its fine. Its really annoying to have to stop and start songs all the time. Is there a way to fix this?

Answer:Crackling Sound

how much ram does your pc have? if it's less than 256 on xp then that can cause this type of problem. if this is the case then you can go to and go through his tutorial on xp and that will help free up the ram. Also download latest drivers for your sound device. if you have onboard sound the drivers will be located on the manufactures site for the mainboard or pc if you have a namebrand ie dell, hp. If you installed a soundcard then you'll have to go to the soundcard manufacturer's site to get the latest set of drivers. you probably know where to find your driver's but I add this info just in case you do not.

I have all the latest drivers installed on my P50, but I still hear pop/crackling sounds whenever some audio is playing, irrespective of the source. There's a thread here which addresses pop sounds when nothing is playing, so this is a different case. You might think this might me due to clipping as I'm overworking the onboard amplifiers, but this is not the case because even at very low volumes I still hear the pop/crackling sounds. It's the type of sound you hear from someone with a severe cold trying to clear his very clogged nostrils. It's really irritating having to hear it about 5 times every minute. The most weird part of it all is that if I reinstall the drivers, the pop/crackling sound disappears entirely. However, they return after 2 or more restarts. I only experience this issue when the onboard soundcard is being used because I don't notice the issue through my external dac + amp combo. Can someone help here ?

Question: Sound crackling

Hi, A few days ago the sound on my Acer Aspire V3 - 772G, about 1 year old, started crackling and getting distorted. It doesn't matter if I'm using the laptop's speakers or my headphones, it's the same crackling noise. The noise doesn't start right away and isn't constant. This is however very annoying and frustrating. I did reinstall the audio driver but it made no difference.  I'm using Windows 8 if that matters. I'm really no good with technical stuff, please, I'd really really love to get some help here.

Answer:Sound crackling

Try to update chipset drivers too if any update is available.

Question: Sound crackling?

Hello, just wanted to say sorry for my poor english.
So... My sound has been crackling/popping in alot of games and not only , also for mumble and this kind of stuff, same with Skype.

I have read many forums about this but couldnt find solution , i have heard that "outdated drivers" might be the problem... but the thing is i dont know what sound card i have :\

I'm using Windows XP
Heres what i have in my "Device manager - Sound , video and game controllers"
- Audio Codecs
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Drivers
-Media Control Devices
-NVIDIA High Definition Audio
-NVIDIA High Definition Audio
-NVIDIA High Definition Audio
-NVIDIA High Definition Audio
-VIA High Definition Audio
-Video Codes

And it happens even in games and things that used to sound fine , it all started happening after formating pc? I think

Please , help! Sorry if i didnt provide enghout info , please ask if u have any questions about my pc :\ and pardon my bad english once again

Answer:Sound crackling?

-NVIDIA High Definition Audio < are most likely the video card HDMI port audio drivers

-VIA High Definition Audio < should be a motherboard audio chipset and most likely the default audio chipset.

What is the brand and model of the computer? Or the brand and model of the motherboard if it's homebuilt?
