I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm at a loss as to what to do with my computer. I spend as much time tinkering and repairing a mutltude of glitches and problems, because I chare this one with the rest of my family. My current problem is this. I recently installed a Rosewill RD-162 16x DVD Burner, everything was working and I should have left it at that. However, I went to the rosewill.com site and did some research and decided to install the latest firmware. There was a glitch in the update, and like dummy I restarted when it said to. The update failed after it erased the old firmware. Now win98se doesn't detect the drive and my asus bios detects it as [RICOH PLoader]. The question I have is, is there an utility somewhere that can help me restore the firmware or cause windows 98 to detect the drive so I can use the firmware installation utility form the manufacturer. I believe Rosewill DVD Burners are the same as AOpen ones.

Answer:Lost DVD Burner Firmware

Typically, websites post the original BIOS for just this reason. Go back and see if they offer the original BIOS and simply flash it back to original.

General rule of thumb for you with BIOS. If its working fine, or your issues are not addressed in the latest BIOS fix, do not get it. It will not help you in any other way and only cause problems.

Hope this works out, let us know.

For the past few months my NEC nd-3550a DVD burner has not been working well. It could not read any form of media, and could not continue a multi-session burn. However, it did manage to burn no multi-session CD's and DVD's.

Trying to resolve the problem, I updated it's firmware with a modified version of the 1.6Y firmware, found in cdfreaks.com.

Since then, the drive has completely stopped working. It still does not recognize any media, nor can it burn anything in any shape or form. Inserting a disk into the drive does not auto-play it, and trying to access it from My Computer results in a "please insert a disc into..." or a "disk may be corrupted".

Is there any way to revert the firmware to it's factory default? And if not, is it at least possible to "update" the firmware to an older version, and where can I find older versions of it?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I've recently purchased a Liteon 401S DVD Burner, I've learned (the hard way) that the DVD burner lacks the software to burn DVD-R's (only can burn DVD+R's) but i've also come across another (slower moving) forum that has a tip on it, if you update the firmware to the Liteon 411, it will have the proper software to burn DVD-R's and DVD+R's.

And now im wondering, it won't let me install the 411 firmware because it reads my drive as a 401S.

Is there anyway to extract the files and somehow flash the drive manually?

I have a T43 with a DVD Multi + DVD burner (Panasonic MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-822S). It was replaced some time ago. New DVD drive would not burn DVD+ discs from Verbatim which I use exclusively (well known: Power Calibration Error). But, the old DVD of the same kind did burn everything! I remember I have fixed it somehow! As I did that years ago, I do not recall the solution. Since it was a one time fix (hmmm...), I did not document it nor did I keep any firmware files related to that update (as I normally do both). Although the DVD model is reported as UJ-822S, on the DVD casing, sticker says: Model No. UJ-822B (not finishing in S). FRU P/N: 39T2507. Firmware version is reported as v1.61.On the Lenovo support site, I have found only two firmware updates: fwdm14.iso containing v1.05 update to the UJ-822B, and latest fwod08.iso where neither 822 type exists. The same problem exists in XPP and Ubuntu, so it must be a firmware issue. Product support for my T43 2668-F3G is no help, ThinkPad device driver matrix also. Have been googling for hours, with no success at all.

I talk to memorex one more time about 2 months ago and they said the DVD burner has a problem or a lock on it to keep it from burning at that speed. they said they will not do anymore firmware updates. my quesion now is their any 3rd party firmware updates that can bypass this problem ? Hi I had a really long thread trying to figure out my A-Open CD burner's driver earlier in the year. Thought i should start fresh with a condensed version of what the forum helped me through so far:

Installed the CD burner (Master on secondary IDE). It worked fine as CD-ROM but needed software to burn. Gave up on using the bundled Nero software (it caused a 'device ios error' that remained a mystery) and switched to trying "Deep Burner" or DB. No Error message with DB!! but when trying to burn a CD in the program it would say: " ASPI initalized---Looking for available drivers---No drives found." Looking at the burners properties in the device manager it indentified the burner as "device type: CD-ROM" not as a CD recorder. The drive was provided by microsoft and i guess it's not a CD-Burning driver.

So then "General Information" sent me to the A-open dowload site (link below) to get the correct driver for my burner. So it took me months to figure out exactly wich model i had....the CRW5224... so now i'm back with some confusion over what's firmware and what's the driver and if i still need to find a driver.

PROBLEM ONE:

I saw this message posted at the top of this forum:
Firmware for CD/CDRW/DVD drives:
WARNING: FIRMWARE IS THE CORE SOFTWARE COMPONENT OF HARDWARE DEVICES AND IS HELD MOST OFTEN IN A FLASHABLE RAM MODULE. IF YOU CHOOSE TO UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE ON ANY DEVICE, YOU DO SO AT... Read more

Answer:Cd Burner , firmware/driver installation confusion

Well, I would hate to tell you not to update the firmware, But I will. If you put in nero again it has the ability to see the drive and tell you what firmware it has in it now, Before you begin to even think about updating the drives firmware. If you do it with the wrong firmware OR have what you're doing now, you are born to fail with the update and have a paperweight or a doorstop. You can also check your drive by going to device managment and looking at the drive properties, but that will not tell you like nero will. You need to know, What firmware (ver) it has NOW before even attempt to update. I have no idea what operating system you're running, you never said that I could see, I never looked what drive you have I see you said its a cdrw/dvd drive but it would be faster to list what you have.
If you don't have dma enabled you will have problems and you need dma enabled on the harddrive as well, by going into device managment and firmware updating is the last option to be taking.

Another question for you, What was the problem (error) you were having with nero? If I might ask. Did you update nero? what is the (ver) you have? I guess to begin with.

I don't think that one works. The Drive in my T61 has different connectors to the one in my T61.  You need a PATA one - I don't think Lenovo supports them anymore. I think you need a 39T2829 - look for a part number on your drive.  Time for eBay or Amazon.

My cd / dvd burner will not burn, or be recognized as a burner. But will play disc's.

I can play cd's, watch movie DVD and play games with my DVD drive. But it has stopped working as a burner for some reason.

Media player keeps saying to connect a burner then restart the program, won't work in nero either.

Have tried a few things. Have changed conection from one SATA to the one next to it. Have uninstalled drivers and the primary IDE??? then re installed it, windows detects it but still the same. Have the latest firmware.

The burner is brand new, have not even burnt a DVD with it. Have burnt about 5-7 cd's though. Is about 5-6 months old, the whole computer is new.

It is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-212.

People have said to go into the properties menu of the burner and check that the recording tab is checked for burning etc. I do not have this tab come up. All I have is GENERAL AUTOPLAY HARDWARE SHARING.

It is really pi**ing me off.

Any ideas on what is going on and how I can fix it??

Cheers,
Peter

Goodevening all,

i have Vista SP1, all latest drivers, TS-l632N (latest firmware) dvd burner
Today i have noticed that when i insert a blank DVD, and try to burn (tried powerGo & Nero) the DVD doesnt burn. Heres what happens:

1)Nero speed test was successful (showed HDD transfer speed = 38mb/s)
2)All discs are READABLE (the DVDs that i burned a week ago are readable)
3)When i start burning, the progress bar reaches 5% in 10minutes!!
4)During burning process, The burner light blinks for 2secs, stops blinking for 10sec, again blink for 2sec, again stop. But the blank disk is constantly spinning fast. The nero shows buffer level at 98-99%. I waited for 1hr20mins when progress bar eventually reached 99%. But then it said writting session info, when disk stopped, started spinning, stopped etc. this happened for 10mins when i manually ejected the disk. (A week ago when i burned, the lights were constantly blinking. Not so now. The lights definitely want to say something!!)

5)I tried various DVD brands. Same problem. So the problem is with writer.
6)I have cleaned disk, defragmented also. No virus, trojan is present.
What could be the problem?

Answer:Dvd burner stops working as a drive and burner.

First, try emptying the CD Burning cache in:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning (you may to unhide folders in Folder options first).

Next check Device Manager and make sure the drives are showing under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

Next, try the upper/lower filter fix in registry. You can download fix from :
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/xp_fixes.html
Click on 'Restore Cd/DVD drives to explorer' link.

You can see the drives in Device Manager but there are yellow exclamation points beside each. I have tried un-installing and letting windows re-enstall and it does, but still have the same problem after it gets through. When I try un-installing service pack 2 I get messages saying if I un-install, a lot of my programs may not run correctly. I am running a Gateway 700 series 1.8 mhz pentium 4 processor, 512 mgs ram, with 80 gig harddrive, windows XP home. I have owned a computer since windows 3.1 and have tried all I know. Can someone please help me? I am just before formatting my hard drive and starting all over! Rather not do that yet if someone can solve this problem. Just for assurance I opened the computer case and checked to make sure the wires were properly seated to both drives and the mother board.

Thanks!

I recently installed a new dvd burner in my computer. I already have a CD burner in it which was read under  the E drive. The dvd burner reads D drive, but now I no longer have an E drive with my cd burner. How do I get it back installed ?

Answer:Installed new DVD Burner / Now CD Burner won't work

You have to go to your computer's BIOS settings and change the settings of the new CD drive and change it settings from a "Master" drive to a "Slave" drive. "Master" meaning primary and "Slave" secondary. BIOS stands for "basic input/output system" and it's how your computer interfaces with the hardware. You can enter your computer BIOS during start-up using a specific keyboard key like "F11" or "F8" but the key varies on different motherboards(which is the main hardware that controls the crucial aspects of the computer) based on their manufacturer . If you could provide the specifications of your computer I could provide a step by step tutorial based on what type of motherboard you have to change you CD Drive settings.

Answer:replacing cd burner with dvd burner

click hereYou'll get one for around £30 in the high street.Disconnect computer from mains first.Once you open the case look to see how it's fitted, usually 2 screws or a clip will hold the drive in place. Remove these and it should slide out. There will be two leads connected in the back of the drive, just swap them over to the new one, they can only fit one way!Make sure you set the pin in the back to master or slave depending on what the current drive is set at, make it the same.Put it back in the way you took it out, connect up the mains again and reboot. Windows should detect it and install it.click here for illustrated help

I want a DVD burner.. or writer ... or whatever it's called, so I can burn my digital movies to DVD, and so I can then watch them in my regular DVD player with my TV.

I was looking on the web for a DVD writer, and there are so many to choose from!

DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R/DVD-RAM, DVD-RW/DVD-R/DVD-RAM!

Ahhhhh! what does this all mean? I thought that a DVD writer .. was like .. a dvd writer and that was all to it.

Which one of these do I need for making DVD digital home movies? And what do the different things stand for?

For example, there's this DVD burner that's like DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM all in one, and there's another one that's like DVD-R/DVD-RAM.

Is the RAM thing bad? haha and yes I know what RAM means, but what the heck is it doing in a DVD burner?

very much DVD burner confused,

ok, I have a few questions. First I bought a dvd burner, while installing it I switched it to master. And switched my dvd rom drive to slave. What drive do I want to go along with the dvd burner, my cd burner or the other dvd rom drive? And how come I have three bays and I'm only able to hook 2 drives up, is there some kind of splitter, or would I have to disconnect the floppy drive and use that ide connection? I'm using winXP home.

Answer:DVD burner-DVD ROM-CD Burner-CD ROM and only 3 bays???

okok

firstly... you have the IDE that connects to your floppy, that's primarily for FLOPPY...

the primary IDE can have any OPTICAL (cdrom,DVD-rom, whatever...) or HARDDISK combination connected, also the secondary IDE can have the same combinations...you should have two(2) IDE cables or four(4) IDE connectors.. now assuming you have only one harddrive, you can connect another optical to the IDE cable the harddisk is connected to, so there you have three opticals to fill your bays and one harddrive to store your info:slurp:

(Also, when using a harddisk and optical combination, the harddisk should always be connected to the IDE0 "master" connector and the optical should be on the secondary "slave" connector)
so illustrated, it'll look like...

IDE0-----Harddisk---Optical

IDE1-----Optical----Optical

Now possibility #2...

you should check your mobo for a Serial ATA port.. you can use these to connect drives also, SATA is faster, btw..
good luck, my friend

Hello, I 'm trying to figure out what is the best way for my DVD burner and my cd-rw writer to be hooked up without any or few mistakes. The way I have them now are as follows:

IDE belt 1 = Harddrive - Master (no slave)
IDE Belt 2 = DVD burner - Master and CD-rw writer as the slave

Is this the best setup or what should I do?

Answer:DVD BURNER AND CD-rw BURNER SETUP

Sure that will work just fine. Some people may recommend that you move the CD-RW to the Primary IDE as a Slave and that will improve CD-RW to DVD-RW copy speeds - personally I would keep it as it is.

P.S: a belt is called a (IDE) cable.

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives. Does anyone know whether the front bezel on the W520 is the same for the two Sony Optiarc drives mentioned above?  If not, which Blu-ray burners can accept the W520 front bezel from the Sony Optiarc AD-7710H, which is the drive my machine shipped with? Thank you!

Hello all,

I am looking for Firmware for DI-614+ wireless router. When I use WEP encryption, no wireless client (laptop) can connect. I have also tried the latest firmware I can get from D-Link. I hoping to use this with my TFCko box or as my access point for my laptop.

If I cannot use it as wireless access point. Is there a firmware hack to make it a wireless client or a repeater?

Thanks for any ideas

If you have not unzipped it, do that now, there may/should be a file, normally called README.txt (if not look for any file with a .txt etention). Question: Firmware for an AP

I have a couple of DLink 900AP's. One has the standard DLink firmware but the other has some specialist firmware for use with a commercial WiFi network.Does anyone know if it's possible to download the non-standard DLink firmware from the 900AP - so I can flash it to my other 900AP?

Answer:Firmware for an AP

No; I think you'd have to find it on the net. Search for whatever info you have even just its revision number. You can usually make backups of router/AP configurations, of course, but although the firwmare is sometimes saved along with it, it may not accept being ported across and you'd lose the other AP's settings in so doing.

Hi,I recently bought my first CD burner. It's a Sony Spessa USB Plus CRX100E/X2 drive. I found out that it can't quite burn an entire 80 min/700MB disk, but that there is supposedly a firmware update that fixes it. I downloaded a firmware update program from Sony's website (found here), and flashed the drive with the default firmware file (CDRW0008.BIN), but it didn't seem to do anything except change the driver to an EEPROM driver. I switched back to the original driver, and it was as if I had never done anything...The firmware program came with another BIN file, ZERO.BIN, so I tried flashing that. I guess that was a mistake, because now the drive doesn't work at all - it's recognized as a "non-specific QT processor with JG". I tried changing the driver back to the original again, but this time Windows won't use it. It just says that there are no compatible drivers for the device. I tried to flash the firmware with the program from Sony again, but now it doesn't recognize the drive as being compatible, so it won't flash it.I was hoping to get some support from Sony, but they informed me that I would have to pay more than I paid for the drive in the first place to get support. So, I hope someone here might have an idea of how I can fix it.

Answer:Is there any way to fix this firmware?

That is why the smarter people here do NOT recommend firmware or BIOS updates lightly. You can end up with a doorstop and no recourse. If the product is still under warranty and doesn't do what is advertised, take it back for a return or replacement with something that does.

Question: Firmware

I recently purchased an nVIDIA 6200AGP8x 350MHz Graphics Card with 512MB For an eight year old Dell Dimension 4600i (P4, 3G HT with a 128 card). As I didn?t think I was getting the full benefit of the new card I checked in BIOS. The maximum it goes to is 256 so I looked the Dell site and saw there were 4 updates, one being video, ok so I downloaded it, and then stopped. I have had a bad experience with firmware (a Plextor drive that refused to work after an update) as a result I am not sure whether to go ahead or not. Ok pathetic but please humour me, do the risks out way the benefits.
Oh, re. the HP on this PC, I noticed it is disabled in BIOS sorry better for a new thread perhaps.
Dave

Answer:Firmware

Now lets see if I understand. You have replaced the the original graphics card with a nVIDIA 6200AGP8x 350MHz Graphics Card.
From the Dell web site it only shows one update for the Bios but it does not state what it was for so should not be used.
Although it does have several driver updates for graphics cards these are not for the new card you have installed and should not be used. Go to the nVidia web site for new updated drivers.
From my memory the bios does not indicate how much memory the graphics card uses. I could be wrong.

hi!

Can anyone tell me what is firmware?

Answer:what is a firmware?

Firmware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and/or data structures that internally control various electronic devices. Typical examples of devices containing firmware range from end-user products such as remote controls or calculators, through computer parts and devices like hard disks, keyboards, TFT screens or memory cards, all the way to scientific instrumentation and industrial robotics. Also more complex consumer devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, synthesizers, etc., contain firmware to enable the device's basic operation as well as implementing higher-level functions.

I went on to the Nero site which states they will not accept responsibility for any firmware updates.

Answer:2 SSD's 2 Different firmware?

I don't think it will give any problems just because of firmwares. After all, it's entirely internal to each device. As long as each one has the proper drivers and the motherboard recognizes each one, they should work.

Told needed firmware upgrade. Unable to find firmware for Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA Device because as near as I can find it's an OEM Device. Went back to Gateway(Notebook Manufacturer) and they don't have. Any suggestions? Ifu can't fix, I guess u install a new DVD Device or a new Notebook.
Was also told by Gateway I needed a Codec upgrade.

Answer:OEM DVD Firmware

The codec pack is easy enough- Techspot has what you need here http://www.techspot.com/downloads/775-klite-codec-pack-full.html
Install and then try running the discs.

How does the drive show up in the Device Manager ? No exclamation mark in a yellow triangle?
What DVD's won't it run-commercial (retail) movies, or discs you are attempting to burn ? If the latter, what brand of discs.

If it definitely requires a firmware update then it seem's you're out of luck as there are none as far as I can tell.

seems that its a pretty nice piece of hardware based on specs but the factory firmware must be hampering it....its brand new and if even two clients get on the connection at once doing minimal things there is noticeable slowdown......

DD-WRT support for the E1 hardware revision seems sketchy but workable....had DD-WRT on the Linksys WRT54G it replaced, it worked ok

Tomato...is that even an option? is it Broadcom only? because this is Atheros based

OpenWRT?

any alternatives to get the best performance from this router? something that is more streamlined? i dont need all those fancy features of even the stock firmware....a basic way to poke ports through it and something to manage QoS per port would be nice.....
