Solved: External Hard drive OR External Hard drive/dvd-rw combo?

Question: Solved: External Hard drive OR External Hard drive/dvd-rw combo?

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

Preferred Solution: Solved: External Hard drive OR External Hard drive/dvd-rw combo?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!
Sonya

Answer:Scanning an external hard drive for viruses? External Hard drive DRAMA!

In My Computer . . right click the external drive and select Scan with { name of AV }

Is it usb powered? If so does the hard drive spin up? Are there any clicking noises from the drive?

Does anyone know of software that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives  to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great Ojas

Answer:Any software that will clone one external hard drive to another external hard

What kind of data is on the HDD ? ?Are you saying that Aceonis does not rcognise both externals ? ?If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...unhook that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.NOTE: I highly suggest verifying the image before cloning...takes a bit longer buy well worth it.It's under the Tools section in Acronis.

Hi,

I am trying to re-install xp pro on my Toshiba Notebook with an external DVD drive. I am able to boot from the drive and the blue "windows setup" screen begins to load.

After I press enter to set up Window XP, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your comptuer...Press F3 to quit.

I am stumped. If I quit setup and I can reboot and load my original windows. Therefore, the hard disk is present and works fine.

How do I get the windows setup to see the hard drive and proceed with setup?

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Install Windows with External Dvd Drive - Hard drive not found?

It is usually because the installation cannot recognise the SATA driver for the hard disc
If you have a usb drive load from Toshiba the sata controller drivers
so on the screen for the install you press F6 load drivers and then load the sata driver from the usb - I say usb as I presume you do not have a floppy drive
OR you can include them in a reburnt CD using nLite but that is a longer way round the problem
Nlite

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part2.html

OR you can TRY try this

Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility
Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section
I’ve seen this section called ‘On Chip Config’ on some Phoenix Award BIOS

On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it’s in Config > Serial ATA (Sata)
Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
Save & Exit
Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again.
If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup.
When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS

Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE

Hi. My external hard-drive stopped working yesterday. This is what's happening:

I plug it in as usual, then it says "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?".
I'm thinking it's more than likely an issue of having pulled out the usb cable without clicking 'safely remove'.

Yesterday I actually got it working again briefly by typing "chkdsk F: /R" into command prompt. Now when I do that it doesn't work, it says "The type of the file system is NTFS. Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted." And when I double click on F: drive in my computer it says "F:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable".

Are there any other options besides using some sort of data recovery tool (I'd rather not do this just because it takes a long time)?

I have an old BYTECC hard drive enclosure. Trying to use it on an older XP system for back up. Got a bunch of 40G hard drives I can use.

The OS will detect the external drive is connected and powered up, arrow shows in the tray for a USB drive, checked the device manager and it sezs the drive is there and operating properly, recognizes it, but does not assign a drive letter.

AIDA32 sezs it is there but same deal shows no drive letter.

I've tried four different hard drives with the same results. I know the hardware works on other computers, this particular computer USB works with other canned external drives, it reads a flash memory stick as a drive no problem. I know the BYTECC is set up properly, should be the same as with other computers. Works ok on a Win2000 system.

What could be the problem? Is there something to tweak?
I do know this XP system would not read hard drives that had been formatted on non-XP computers before. Don't exactly know what systems all these drives were formatted on. Isn't making any sense to me at the moment. Doing it just like I did on the Win2000 system with other drives, everything worked as it should.

Thinking I could try to slap one of the drives in as a slave and try to format it that way, hopefully can get it to be read as a USB drive instead.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: External hard drive not assigned a drive letter

If the drive shows up in Disk Management (Start/Run/diskmgmt.msc/OK), right-click the drive icon or the area showing the drive below, select "Change drive letter and paths". In the next window click "Add". Next window click the radio button for "Assign the following drive letter". Select a drive letter. Click OK.

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

Answer:Solved: Getting an External Hard drive

You can install many programs to externals. But all your programs would need to be reinstalled, anyway, if you reformatted since only part of installed programs go to the Program Files folder. Other files go to places throughout the file system, and you would need to reinstall everything, anyway, just to create the needed registry entries.

This is the first time I did this, I just did a disc image recently on a new external hard drive but can't figure out how to get the disc image back onto my PC when I might need it. I know it must be a very simple process to do but darn if I can figure out how it's done... Don't need to do it right now but would like to know now so if I do need to do it I can. I am using Windows 7. Thanks.

Answer:[SOLVED] External Hard Drive

How did you create your disc image? Usually you reverse process. You would start the program that you used to create the image and choose Restore, and lead it to your image file.
If you wanted to restore the whole OS from an image file, then if image program allowed you to create a boot disc, you would boot off of the boot disc and choose Restore.

Hi Folks,

I have an old Dell C600 laptop running XP pro which only has one USB port. I want to connect both a USB printer and an external hard drive at the same time.
I have bought a four port usb hub but while the printer works fine, the Ext HDD shows up as either "Unknown Device" or with a disk size of 0.
The Ext HDD works fine if I connect it directly to the USB port on the laptop.
Is this because I bought a cheap USB hub or do not need to do something technical to get the HDD to work through the hub?

Thanks, Harry.

Anyway, I've had an external hard drive as long as I've had my laptop (3+ years) and it's always shown up as Local Disk (F:). Recently, I got a Blackberry and when I connected it to the computer, it showed up as Blackberry (F:) and my hard drive has been changed to Local Disk (G:). Hi, I use an external HD called Freecom and haven't had any problems with it, apart from a while ago and recently, with Data loss. I understand this is due to SP2. I use Windows XP Pro and have used this external drive for a number of months now.

Just recently, I switched on Freecom and got the 'New Hardware found' message! I quickly checked my items on it (opening Explorer) and they seemed fine. I rebooted my PC and all was OK without any message. Yesterday and this morning, I switch Freecom on and I now get a message saying this USB is Hi-speed and can perform faster using the available free USB slots. It showed a list with these slots BUT I only have 1 physical free USB slot on my laptop. I have never ever seen this message before while using Freecom.

I have run Spybot Search & Destroy but nothing was found. I also ran a virus check and all was OK. I have noticed my system is slow but I only have 2 items on startup, namely Webshots, Diskeeper. When I used Diskeeper on the C and F drive, it was really slow.

Hope someone can help me, please?
Many thanks

Hey guys, i have just registered here to see if anyone can help me, as ive been looking online for help but cant find any.

Basically, i just upgraded my ps3 hdd so i purchased an enclosure for the 2.5" sata drive that i took out of the ps3. I plugged it inot my Vista laptop and it didnt show, so i went into disk management and initialized it then formatted it. I wanted to use the hdd to transfer films onto my ps3, but i needed to format it in FAT32, so as windows doesnt format in that type i found a program which did and it formatted it fine. (cant remember the name of the program). Anyway like i say, it was all fine and i was able to put my films onto the hd. Unfortunately the ps3 didnt recognise the hdd when i connected it, and i realised i needed to create a folder on the hd then put the movies in the folder, so i connected it back to my laptop and now it doesnt recognise it. It makes the sound that it has been connected but the drive doesnt show in "my computer" and when i go into disk management it says that the type is "unknown" and the status is "unreadable".

Once the films were put onto the hard drive i did disconnect it without clicking on the icon to safely remove the hardware. I think that this may be the problem. Sorry for the long explanation, but thought it would be better to explain it all.

So i just wondered if there was anyway to fix this problem. im not fussed if i lose the films on the hard drive coz i have them saved... Read more

Would an external hard drive help speed up your computer? Or is it used mostly for back ups? My hard drive is getting pretty full. I must be to lazy to reformat,or don't have the skills to format the hard drive. So what would be the best route to take? Thank You

Answer:Solved: External Hard Drive

Having an external drive won't, of itself, speed up your computer but having an over full drive can cause the machine to slow down. If you're looking to clean up some of the junk on your drive start with this TSG library article.
http://library.techguy.org/wiki/How_to:_Free_up_drive_space.

Obviously moving files to the external drive will help to free up space.

So, the first problem I saw with this was from iTunes--but it turns out magically, overnight, without me making any changes, suddenly the only process in the universe's existence that knows my external drive is connected is explorer.exe. Meaning I can browse and launch programs from the drive just fine, but every single program and shortcut I own that uses that drive is acting like it's not connected.

I'm hoping there's a fix besides reconnecting the drive, because if my computer is on while the drive is disconnected, there's a 50/50 chance that my 100GB iTunes library of music and movies and stuff will completely lose all of its data and I'll have to spend over 24 hours rewriting all of the info!

Hi, I have an Acer Netbook with no disk drive. I've been advised to get an external back up drive thingie (new to home pc's so forgive me!) to back up files etc. I'm from the UK and wonder if anyone has any advice on buying one. I think you can get one for around 40+. I don't need large space as I can't download anything onto disks.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Answer:Solved: External hard drive

Something like this would do....and always get bigger than you need as space disappears ...this is a 320 Gb but you can get bigger

Hi,
I have a new computer. My old computer had a 500gb drive. I purchased an External Hard Drive enclosure and want to install my old computer's HD in it. But I'm not sure of a few things...

Both old and new computers are running Windows 7 64bit

If I use the old HD as external with new computer, can I just leave the OS on it?
Can I access programs on the old hard drive? (Or will they be slow)
Obviously, the old hard drive was a master. Will this work as an External or does an external need to be set to slave?

My gut feeling is that all I need to do is attach it and I can access it. But I would appreciate any input.

Thanks

If you want to leave the OS on there you can but it'll be a wast of space as Win 7 will be non-bootable.

No you can not run applications from the old OS, you will have to re-install them on the new system. If some applications have backup and restore capability you should do so with them.

You should move all important data such as Documents, pictures, videos, e-mail backup and browser favorites and the such to the new system. Format the external drive them move the data back as a data storage drive. IMO.

Seems like your partiton table is damaged.

You could try to recover it with:

Find and Mount

and then get the data off that partition; or you could run

PC Inspector File Recovery

which both are freeware.

On my XP Pro desktop I often USB plug-in an external drive. No problem with this but it places an icon on my bottom right task bar which I understand I have to click and then click the drive letter to get permssion to remove it, which sometimes takes two attempts.

Why can't I just remove the USB cable and ignore any permissions? After all one is supposed to be able to connect and disconnect USB hardware any time.

johnni

Answer:Solved: External Hard Drive

The icon is the safe removal icon and I doubt you can remove it or should try. You can set the drive to "optimize for quick removal" in Device Manager, Disks, Policies but you will still see the icon. The icon always appears in any version of Windows that us an external drive plugged into it.

I have had an external hard drive connected to my computer for years, when initially installed, I cordoned it into two sections so my wife and I could each use half for photos, graphics, etc. so there should be a "J" drive and an "L" drive listed on "My Computer". Today, I noticed that it wasn't responding. I checked the drive and realized one of the two cables had been disconnected. I reconnected the cables and restarted my computer but I still don't see the hard drives when I open up "My Computer". Any ideas on how to get them back?

I'm running XP Home Version on an eMachine with a Pentium 4 processor.

Thank you!

Answer:Solved: External Hard Drive

How was the external drive connected? Which cable was loose? If you go to the control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management, do you see the drive listed? Can you see the drive in your BIOS?

You might try shutting the computer down, disconnecting the drive, booting into windows, shutting the computer down again, reconnecting the drive, and then seeing if windows detects it?

I have an extra 40GB Seagate HD sitting in a bottom desk drawer in bubble wrap that I'd like to put to use in an external 2.0 USB case which I'm about to order. I presently have two 40 GB internal drives with jumper settings at "cable select." First, is it possible to operate more than two HD's on a system(Windows XP Home) and second, if so, I assume the jumper settings would be: Drive 0 Master, Drive 1 Slave and the USB drive Slave. Thanks for any guidance.

Answer:Solved: usb external hard drive as third drive?

It's no problem to connect as many drives as you can afford. Just jumper the drive as master and stick it in the external enclosure. Master/slave relevant when connection to an IDE controller with multiple IDE devices, external cases are always masters.

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

Answer:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from sourceforge.net.

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

I've been running a Seagate 250GB External Hard Drive for several months with good success. Last week, my Canon printer died. Rather than replace it, I decided to share my wife's Canon printer by using a cheap and simple DiPro A/B mechanical switch that permits me to switch back and forth between our two computers. That seems to work OK, except that I get error messages stating that the hard drive or the printer (it doesn't say which) needs to be plugged into a USB 2.0 port. It is. All of the 8 ports on my rig are USB 2.0.

The hard drive then shuts down. If I reboot, it starts back up again, but shuts down again. If I remove the printer connection, the hard drive runs fine.

Then, the mysterious stuff starts. I ignored the hard drive shutting down because I had a lot of printing to do, then shut down my rig and went to watch TV. On a trip back to the kitchen, I noticed that the hard drive had come back on even though the computer was turned off.

I have experimented with various combinations of the USB ports, plugging the hard drive, printer and mouse into different sockets. Same result. Any ideas out there?

I recently downloaded and installed a few programs on an external hard drive. (The programs had to be downloaded and installed within a 24 hour period in order to work if that fact matters.) Can this external drive now be moved to a different computer and the programs work on the new computer?

Answer:Solved: Programs on external hard drive

They probably would not work on another computer. Many programs require additions or changes to the Windows registry as well as adding files, like DLL's, to the system folders on the system (C drive.

I have been having many problems with my computer lately and I would like to be able to boot to my external HD in case of emergency, is it possible? If so, how? And is there a program that will automatically backup my computers HD onto my external one? Also, my extermal HD gets very hot when it has been on for a while and it has no fan, should I be worried?

Answer:Solved: Booting to External Hard Drive

IMO externals without a cooling fan are NOT made for continuous ops. They are made for turning on and copying whatever you want then OFF.

Next you cannot boot a windows os from an external drive. This is because of how windows handles the usb ports.

Is there a program to auto backup? Yes. I use and recommend both acronis true image and macrium reflect. Both of these work very well. You can make an image of your drive and save it to an external. If needed, you can boot with the boot CD the apps will make for you and restore the image.

Depends on the backup software that you are using and the settings you have chosen for it.

oceandubman said:

No, not entire boxes but some people have two backup copies and keep one offsite. Generally you should be able to put several backups or maybe even hundreds of backups onto a single drive depending on how much you are backing up and how big the backup device is. There really is no point in keeping a huge amount of backups.

I tried to use the GParted in the Ubuntu LiveCD to partition a USB hard drive I got into two. It said that it, somehow, was a boot drive, and after I unmounted it, let me create a partition in it.

Oops! It created a 5 GB partition. The drive is 40 GB. Ubuntu/GParted is refusing to let me touch the other 35 GB to format it. And if I use a diagnostic CD, it may not have USB support.

How should I go about formatting my USB hard drive to bring it back to 40 GB (or better yet, two partitions - 5/35 GB?)

I changd from a PC with XP to a PC with Vista and connected the external to my new computer. When I now try and save to the exernal it says that I can't as it's read only. Why would this be?

Answer:Solved: external hard drive says read only

What you need to do is clear the read only attribute from the external hard drive. To do this you will use the diskpart utility.

Type cmd in the start area of the search menu.
Right click on cmd.exe in the area above and select run as administrator.
In the command prmpt type diskpart and the other commands as I have shown. Make sure to select the disk associated with the external hard drive. In detail you will see that it has the attribute of readonly (unlike mine). In the example mine was not cleared because it was not read only in the first place. Yours should work.

Through personal experience, I figured that its best to format the drive before using it, as generally its in fat32 format. This time round, it was already NTFS, but I formated it anyways. The process took a huge 16 or so hours to complete.

When it was finally done, I screwed up my language bar, so I restarted the computer, and the language bar was fine. But the hard drive wasn't responding so I unplugged it and replugged it back into the usb.

Damn, it said that I had to format the drive, as it is still unformated!!! So I went to format it... but then... it only gives me the option to format at 16GB??!?!?! wth happened to the rest of my storage?!?!?! I formated it anyways and it took a couple of seconds... and now, I have an external hard drive weighing over 2 KG... with a storage space of 16 GB !

Last night during the shut down process a message popped up telling me that a certain file was corrupt and that I should run CHKDSK. I should have made a note of the name of the file, but I didn't. It was a gibberish name that may have started with "m$".

Today, I find that my external hard drive (a Maxtor One Touch III) is inaccessible. When I try to access it through Windows Explorer, I get the following message: "F:\ is inaccessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

I ran CHKDSK. At the beginning, it gave me the following message: "Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode." It claimed to fix some things at the end of step 2, but it didn't help.

Device Manager thinks that the device is running properly.

I rebooted the machine but that didn't help either.

I have a western digital external hard drive that I use for day to day work.

My thought was to re-format the drive, although I am unsure of how to go about this when I cannot access it, or does anyone have any ideas how I could revert the error?

Would it be possible for a hacker to access sensitive files on my external hard drive if I

disconnect the internet when my external hard drive is connected

disconnect the external hard drive when the internet is connected

When the external hard drive is disconnected from my computer, does it leave behind on my computer, any files I may have accessed?

Would the internet have to be disconnected physically (cable unplugged from the computer)?

I probably sound a little paranoid but I'm just trying to take every precaution to protect my sensitive files.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help

Answer:Solved: External hard drive safety

Some programs, like MS Word, makes temporary files while editing a document. If you exit Word properly, that temp file gets erased. However if you reboot your pc while editing a file, the temp file stays on the hd and is orphaned. Somebody can then grab that temp file and see most of your document.

The easiest way of disconnecting from the internet is unplugging the cable.

If you disconnect your external drive while going online, the potential hacker should not know there is an external drive. However, there may be some registry entries that indicate the existance of an external drive.

Another measure you could take is to encrypt those files. Try Truecrypt. It is free and pretty good.

It started this way.
It actually fell from my table and refused to come on ever since.
It was just making clicking sounds and beeping repeatedly without spinning.
Agitated, I opened up the device, and discovered that the lens wasn't moving over the discs neither were the discs themselves rolling.
So I got a working hard drive, opened it up and decided to swap the discs, but its still not working.

hi,

recently my laptop decided to stop working , so i thought the first thing i need to do is get all of the data off the hard-drive. so i bought a external enclosure for it and installed it and everything.

plugged it into a windows XP system and it went through the whole plug n play thing and it started then.

now when i plug the drive in the action light comes on and totally crashes windows. eventually it sorts its self out and gives me the 3 partitions my notebook drive is in, i can access two of them but the problem is that all of the files i need are on the third unreachable partition! it totally freezes after right or left clicking on it or accessing and software to do with the hard drive.

i got a error recently saying L: drive needs formatting do you want to do it now, but i dont want to format it as i want the data from it!

any help would be much appreciated and if you are not fully sure what im on about i will try to explain better

Hi to all,
I tend to work from Maxtor, my external drive, so that my work is automatically backed up (although I also back up to disc every so often as a precaution). I use Windows XP Pro and MS Office Suite 2K Professional and have suddenly developed the following problem. I was creating a folder for one of my DVDs, which included photos and text. One of the photos hadn't been printed, although it was sitting there on my document. I decided to delete the photo and reinsert it but then Word 'encountered a problem and had to close'. This happened each time I opened this particular document. I then copied this file to the C-Drive and I was able to manipulate the photo and print it off without a problem. I then copied this file back to Maxtor and it was OK and didn't close Word this time. I had this incident last year and removed and reinstalled the Office Suite but I can't remember if this resolved the issue or not because I then had to format my hard drive (thinking that this would cure all). Thing is, I now have the same problem again. It only seems to be when I work from my external drive. Please has anyone any ideas? The file contained 528KB. Many thanks, Morny

I am using winxp system. I have a "MyBook" external hard drive attached. I installed Call of duty World at War onto it and after playing for a while... (several weeks) I recently discovered that when I tried playing it, it would "search for exe file" (Browse for file icon). I know it has NOT been deleted and folder still exists on External Hard drive. However, when I double click on "Activision" folder for game files, it pauses and asks if I want to format the F: drive ( drive letter for external drive). But none of the other folders gives me that error. When I try to just delete the folder it says there is a cyclic redundancy error and won't let me do anything. I even tried removing folder under command prompt. I did the removal of the game under windows add/remove programs section and it seemed to remove files, but folder is still there and same message appears. Question??? (Finally I know) Should I just format the F: drive and it will wipe it all clean and let me have no more errors, or is there something wrong with my drive since everything else on the drive works fine?? Also, My blue WD icon for the F: drive is now the "unrecognized" icon under My Computer. Is there a way to fix that also.
Part 2: I unplugged my external hard drive and tried installing same game on C:/ drive and it seemed to work until it got to a certain file and it started to pop an error saying "are you sure file ".iwd exists- if so retr... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Problem with external hard drive HELP!!!

Hi puls3kill3r

Just to make sure, run some diagnostics, to make sure that errors aren't occuring that are corrupting your files. Check your system memory --- http://www.memtest.org --- and hard drives --- http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 ---

If you are overclocking, try things set to defaults.

Also check the condition of your game's optical disk (DVD or CD).

You could check on Call of Duty's online forums for game-specific help, but I'd imagine that they'd advise using an internal drive for gameplay. That you had errors on drive C as well is a bit of a worry.

I think the first thing I would try (if the diagnostics proved the hardware to be OK) would be to completely uninstall the game from both drives, and to uninstall the external drive completely. Then reinstall the game to an internal drive, and see how it plays. If all is well, then reinstall your external drive.

Best of luck

So I got a WD Passport to back up photos music and movies. (500GB USB)

Over the last couple weeks it was getting slower and slower registering with my laptop, presumed it was the laptop because its pretty old. Last time I plugged it in it did not register with the laptop at all.

I plugged it into my computer at work, though it took a while it finally recognised and "my passport" was in the my computer folder. However when I tried to open anything in the external hard drive and error wit I/O something came up. So I "safely removed" it and plugged it back in.

Next I was getting "local drive" were I should be seeing "my passport" and now nothing.

My computer folder will not respond if it is plugged in and the computer will not start up if it is plugged in.
All drivers are up to date, I even unintalled and reinstalled them.

Has my external hard drive given up on life or is there anyway to save it ....and my data is it gone forever
Any help would be really appreciated

I bought an external hard drive enclosure and took out my slave drive that was in the computer installed it into the enclosure. Thought all would go good , but when I plugged in the power cord and usb cable Windows XP did not recognize it. The instuction booklet that came with the enclosure does not help at all neither does the cd. I am running Windows XP home edition on a HP pavilion xt 963 ,Intel Celeron CPU 1200mhz, 256 mb ram ,not sure if usb ports are 1.0 or 2.0 but according to the box the enclosure is a 2.0 but backward compliant. I have also unsuccessfully tried to install it on a computer running windows 98, 184 mb ram , AMD 3d processor. It comes up on both as being an unknown device. Any help is greatly appreciated.

hi, need a bit of help asap!

Earlier on, I was backing up files on my pc to an external drive when the pc got a bsod. When i rebooted the system the external drive had become corrupted. When i try to open it, it says "is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.

I tried the drive on my laptop and it wont work here either. Ive opened up disk management but it just detects it as an unformatted drive. The drives table seems to have reset.

In partition magic 8, I am able to see the drive and it detects the space being used as well as the drive name etc.

It also has a message when i start partition magic, which is in the image below. Is there anything that can be done to recover the data as i have some files on it that i would not like to loose.

Thanks for your help!

I have been searching for a program that will hash a whole hard drive. So far the programs I have found only generate hashes file level. Does anyone know of a program or know what i can do to generate a hash on say a whole directory, or group of files?

Answer:Solved: MD5 Hashing on external Hard drive

So its not exactly what you are looking for but I use MD5summer for hashing my drives.

It doesnt actually hash the drive. It does each file individually but if you select the root directory as your drive, then select all for folders and do an "Add Recursively" it will hash every file on the computer.

It also has a nice Verify Sums feature where you can load the hash file, and it will check the files for you automatically.

One of the nice benefits to this is that if a file changes on the drive, the whole has doesnt fail. Just the single file.

Hope that helps!

I'm trying to retrieve my documents from a hard drive I removed from my dead Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop. I bought a 2.5 inch USB enclosure and installed the Dell Hitachi HD in it. However, I can't get my desktop to recognize it. Should I jumper the Hitachi as a slave? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Answer:Solved: External usb hard drive enclosure

Ignore this post; I've ascertained a jumper is not needed and that the hard drive is kaput.

My 500G external drive is slowly filling up and it's time to move up to a BIG drive....there are lots of them out there; can someone reccomend a reliable one to get? This is strictly for backing up data, photos, images, videos, etc.

I'd like to get away for less than $150 if possible but don't want to compromise if there is a huge difference by spending a few more bucks. Thanks!

Answer:Solved: Need recc. for a 2T external hard drive

There are no huge differences. They are all good or most would not be there to buy. I personally prefer WD and Hitachi over Seagate since I have had far more Seagate failures than any other brand.

www.tigerdirect.com

But remember when you say "backup" that there still needs to be an original copy of each file or it is not a "backup" at all. Externals fail far more often than internals and your data is not safe.

Greetings,

I have a USB 2.0 Notebook enclosure that I have been using. It worked great with this old 10 gig hard drive I was using. I purchased a new 40 Gig drive and I cannot get it to be recognized in "My Computer" It shows up in device manager as soon as it's plugged in. I also get the balloon pop up saying it's installed and ready to use. Is there something I have to do to make it recognizable.

Thanks
Smitty

Answer:Solved: Cannot get USB 2.0 External Hard Drive to be Recognized

Yes, Partition and Format it.

Right Click on My Computer and Select Manage. Then select Disk Management and you shoudl see the new drive. Right click on the name of the drive and Initialize it. Then right click anywhere on the drive space and choose to Partition it. You'll also be given the option to format it and assign a drive letter.

I am trying to get my WD Dual-Option Combo External Drive to work with a Nippon Labs 10 ft. USB 3.0 A Male to A Male Cable Model USB3-10MM. When i plug it in to my computer (Windows XP Pro) it does not show up anywhere. i attempted to install the drivers from the WD website, but that did nothing. I also looked for something in the device hardware, but its like there is nothing even plugged in. This External Hard drive used to work fine with my old Windows Server 2003, but i had a different cable then. Am i missing some crucial step?

Answer:Solved: External Hard drive and USB to USB cable

Does your external drive have an internal USB hub with USB A female jacks front and back? Those will not work for connecting a host computer. A USB cable from the computer needs to attach to the USB B female jack.

Is it possible? My internal hard drive in my laptop finally gave out after 10 years of use and I don't have any money to get a new one, but I do have an external terrabyte drive, but is it possible to install XP Pro on it or should I think of just installing Ubuntu on it?

Answer:[SOLVED] Installing XP Pro on an external hard drive?

You cannot install an OS to a USB HDD. Remove the HDD from the laptop. Being 10 years old, it may still be an IDE drive. If it is a SATA, and your USB drive is 2.5" (as opposed to 3.5") you can remove the HDD from the USB Enclosure and replace your dead laptop drive.

Okay, just looking for a little feedback here, hope someone can offer some insight:

A few weeks ago I bought a 500 gig Western Digital "MyBook" external hard drive at a price that seemed too good to be true. And now I know WHY it was too good to be true- because it's a piece of junk. Or at least the plastic enclosure it came in is. Here's my little tale:

About a week ago I was transferring some files to the mybook and when I came back to my computer, I found it had somehow shut itself down. I powered it back up and to my horror discovered that roughly 50 percent of the files on the mybook were gone. Couldn't restore them, couldn't locate them- just gone. At the same time however, the drive still registered that the exact same amount of space was being use as it registered before the files dissapeared, which made me think that maybe they were still on there someplace. I checked around and tried again to restore them, but finally gave up and just formatted the drive and started over. It seemed to work fine and I thought maybe that would be it.

This morning I went to transfer about 3 gigs of data to the drive and it says it'll take about 20 minutes. When I came back 40 minutes later- it still said 20 minutes and nothing had actually been transferred. I knew something was wrong and when I tried to disconnect the drive from the computer, my icons all dissapeared and wouldn't come back until i literally yanked out the plug on the drive. Wh...
