FreeAgent 1TB External Hard stopped working (unknown, not initialized)

Question: FreeAgent 1TB External Hard stopped working (unknown, not initialized)

Hey

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.
I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Preferred Solution: FreeAgent 1TB External Hard stopped working (unknown, not initialized)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

Did you try initialising it as an MBR disk?

i have a Toshiba hard drive 500 GB it was working fine but suddenly when i plugged into my laptop i discovered it is not working and when i go to disk management it said Disk 2 unknown and not initialized.
i tried to plug it in another computers but nothing changed.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

- booting in ubuntu and knoppix via cd - drive is not recognized

- every major app for this type of problem i saw recommended: seagate seatools, partition wizard, wd data lifeguard diagnostics, power data recovery, find and mount, a bunch of stuff on hiren's boot cd, test disk, etc.

Answer:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I would like to chkdsk it but I forgot what the drive letter of the hard drive, so I can't really search it.

It is my brother's hard drive & it has very important data related to his working. It is a 2tb WD my passport ultra external hard disk which was used as NTFS with only one partition.
My brother told me that he deleted some data from the drive by mistake and was recovering the data from the drive but all the windows recovery programs he used just hanged after few minutes (which is also a sign of bad sectors). Then he done the blundered mistake by formatting the drive, the formatting also not completed due to hang situation.

Now the current situation is that the drive is not showing in the windows explorer and when I open the disk management ,the popup came up for initializing the disk either as MBR or GPT. When I try to initialize the disk, it gives me this error:- "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". I have attached a few screenshots below.

I have tried cloning the drive with clonezilla, tried booting the drive with parted magic, Hire n boot and system rescue CD but neither of them recognized the drive and some also rejected to boot with the drive attached.
Now currently i am scanning this disc for recovering the lost partition in the 'Partition Recovery Wizard' software according to the advice on some old thread here, but this software has detected my disk as 'bad Disk' in the file System column as you can see in the fifth image, so i don't have much hope with this software.

Answer:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

Can someone please help?

Answer:External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

1. Disk management showing disk 1 -unknown- -not initialized-

2. When i tried to initialized it show -incorrect function-

3. I tried the recovery software but all of them cant detect my external HDD

4. The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic from western digital managed to detect my external and showing there is bad sector but when i tried to repair, it give me this message -unable to repair bad sector-

Please help!!! is there any chance i can fix this?

Answer:Please help, disk 1 unknown not initialized (western digital external)

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Answer:External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

Yesterday while using my computer my secondary drive / storage drive disappeared. I can see it in Disk Management, but I tried to use MiniTool, but it cannot see the drive. I have attached a screen shot for more info.

Is it KIA or recoverable long enough to save a couple files at least?

I have a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Go Hard Drive which suddenly stopped working. What happened was, I was shrinking one of the volumes because I want to make three partitions. As I was formatting the unallocated volume, the hard disk was accidentally remove from the laptop. Then when I plugged in again, the laptop cannot detect the drives which I originally have. I already uninstalled the device through Device Manager, restart the laptop and reinstalled the device driver but still it won't detect my hard disk.

Answer:Dead freeagent go external hard drive... how to fix?

First, try another cord. Also jiggle the cord and push on the connectors to attempt a more positive connection. See if that brings the drive to life on the system.

Try plugging the drive intro another USB port, preferably one of the ports connected directly to the motherboard. The most common problem with these portable drives is poor connections and/or poor power supply through the USB port or cable.

You can pull the drive out of the case and then connect it to a PC (desktop) using standard power and SATA connectors. This will test to see if the drive is good and if there is a problem with the interface in the case.

I just bought an external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, 1.5TB) and have some difficulty setting it up using the Seagate DiscWizard software.

The reason I bought this drive is to clone my DELL Inspiron 6400 Laptop HD in case of disaster etc. The Laptop HD is 140GB and 70GB are taken for my files / programs. So I was able to clone the Laptop HD but when I reboot, after I changed the BIOS settings to boot from the USB, the Laptop starts and during the process of loading Vista it re boots by itself.

Looking on the explorer, I have the Main C:\ drive, and then I have the Recovery D:\ (that is where DELL put the recovery files), then I have E:\ which is the DVD drive and then are the new cloned drives F:\ Recovery and G:\ Main.

Now checking the properties of F:\ and G:\ they are both formatted as NTFS and the F:\ is 10 GB as my original and the G:\ is only 70GB as the original so the clone process made the external drive only 70GB.

I think the problem is that the G:\ should have been before the F:\ but not sure.

Any Ideas on how to go about it?

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

I bought an external hard disk (FreeAgent 160GB, Model # ST901603FGE1E1-RK) in February 2008. The purpose is data backups of my PCs (all XP-SP2). Whenever I use this external hard disk (from any of my PCs), there are always a few occurences of the following in Event viewer :-

Type: Warning
Source: Disk
EventID: 51
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation

My other external hard disk is a Western Digital (procured about a year ago), and so far, I have not come across any such error message when I use it.

Should I be concerned about this error event in my Seagate FreeAgent? Since this is a data backup device, I am worried.

I have a brand new Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1 TB external HDD. Actually it's my dad's and I was suspicious that it might have a virus. So I booted my laptop through Ubuntu and plugged my Seagate once it booted successfully. There was no virus, just some default files that can be found on a new HDD, like UserManuals, an exe file also which I guess might have been the driver. There were some other files as well but I can't remember the names. Relieved that there is no virus, I formatted the Seagate HDD because I knew (or believed) that those files aren't really necessary to run the HD. A message appeared which said the disk couldn't be formatted properly but still was opening with no data in it. Yesterday I wanted some data from my friend and plugged in the HD in her computer. The HD did open and drive window appeared with no data in it. Everything fine. Suddenly the window disappeared and drive was not there even in My Computer. I unplugged and replugged the HD many times but the HD could not be detected. Now I can't use this Seagate HD, as it's not even being detected.

What went wrong? Did something happen due to the deletion of those default files? Or something else went wrong?

Please help!

Have a external hard drive that was backed up on a macbook pro
using time machine. I try to take the files out that I put on a windows 7 PC

But it does on device manager.
is there a problem with the external hardrive?

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive not showing up on Windows?

It is likely formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), HFS+. Windows can't natively read that.

"I try to take the files out that I put on a windows 7 PC" is a confusing statement. If you want to read the files on the drive from 7, you can't without a 3rd party tool. If you are just wanting to put stuff on there from the PC and don't care about the Mac backup, then just format the drive. Do that through Disk Management in the Admin Tools control panel.

Hi,

I have an external hard drive that has stopped working......

The hard drive is a laptop hard drive that has a small attachment on it so I can plug a usb in to it, this small attachment has a light on, green usually means it's working normally.....

When I plug the hard drive in to the USB, the stays constant amber and i can hear the drive spinning, the drive spins for around 10 seconds then stops then does the same again, after a few attempts at this the drive then doesn't spin at all and the light stays constant green but the drive isn't showing on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Hi Guys

My Seagate 500GB external hard drive has stopped working for me today! Its been connected to my PC and was fine last night. The drive is no longer being recognised by windows. When its connected I can see it in device manager as a usb mass storage device but its not showing up in disk management. I can hear the disk spinning normally in the case so at least it still sounds healthy but I cant get windows to recognise it.

A few HD's that have gone bust on me before so I tried the usual tactics. I switched out the cables and tried connecting it to another PC but it was the same issue. Ive removed the disk from the case and connected it directly to my PC. When I boot up now I can see an extra disk is showing in my computer but I still cant access it (just showing as Local Disk (F). When I check device manager under disk drives its just listed as "disk drive" and now I cant even access disk management as it just freezes when I open it. Ive also tried to format it but I got an error message at the start saying it was unable to format.

Any thoughts?

Make a Parted Magic boot disk (it's Linux based ) and see if you can access the drive with that. http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads

Is the data on the drive backed up? If you can't read the drive with Parted Magic it's probably gone bad. Under warranty?

Answer:External Hard Drives Stopped Working

Does the drive turn on at all? Try using another USB cable and see if that works. If that doesn't work: If you are willing, open the hard drive and try to connect it to the motherboard. Then try to boot into Windows and see if it shows up. If not, try UBCD to boot into hard drive diagnose of the brand of the HDD and do short and long test on the drive.
You can download UBCD from Ultimate Boot CD - Overview if you don't already have a copy.
Best of luck!

I have already uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it by A) manually hitting reinstall and B) restarting my computer with the driver uninstalled.

STILL nothing. It does NOT show up under disk management under computer management under admin tools.

It has had the same problem in every other computer i have connected it to. I cannot reformat because it does not detect correctly.

In Device manager it says the device is working properly.

Hello,
first of all I would just like to point out that I am not a native speaker so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I might make.
I have a problem with my external hard drive. The drive is Verbatim 47512. Last year I unplugged the drive without safely removing it first. When I plugged it in again it asked me to format the drive. As I didn't wanna loose my files I tried using Recuva and it worked. However, the process took too long and I was leaving for ten months the next day so I had to stop the process. I wanted to continue when I got back but the drive wasn't working at all. I couldn't even turn it on. I kept trying and after some time it started to work again. When I plug it in, I can't find it in my computer. But I can find it in the disk management. I'm attaching a picture, it says it's uninitialized and that it needs to be initialized. I don't know what it means and I'm scared it might delete my files. It also says that it's allocated and unknown. https://postimg.org/image/zci27fe6h/
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and it says that my disk is bad. I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me? Or should I give up?

Hi everyone, was hoping I could get some help here. I'm a pretty advanced user, so I've already done the usual troubleshooting and everything, but my problem persists. I have a 1TB external Hard drive that I've been using for like 6 months, I've never had any problems with it until now. It suddenly decided to stop working on windows. I've tried it on around 7 different windows PCs and laptops, ranging from XP to windows 8.1, and it doesnt work on any of them. It does, however, work perfectly well on Ubuntu. This has led me to believe that there is either a windows-specific virus on it or something. I have opened it up and connect it via SATA cable as well, so its not the casing. When the hard drive is plugged in, the light is on, and a new drive (Local Disk E) shows, but it should be called Touro, and I can't do anything with the drive. if I click on it, windows explorer freezes. When I open Disk Management, it sticks on "Connecting to Virtual Disk...." something, but never ever loads, but the second I take the drive out it continues to load and works normally. I have scanned the entire drive (took a day) and found no threats, so I am completely stumped. Basically, I either need someone to tell me the exact problem and a way to fix it (without formatting my drive), or alternative ways around it.
Thanks in advance

Hey everyone, I've officially got THE worst luck with technology EVER.

Today, my Western Digital 500GB External HDD has stopped working. One minute it's working fine - the next its completely unresponsive. I deleted a music folder off the hard drive that wouldnt play and I dont know if that's been the cause of it to become unstable.

When I plug it in via USB I can feel the disk spinning inside and loading, but the windows sound does not play. About 2-3 minutes later I get the sound but it does not appear under Hard Disk Drives on My Computer. When I try to go into device manager it crashes windows explorer.

After a couple of attempts the name is now "Local Disk I:' and not even 'Elements'

After about 10-15 minutes of being plugged in the drive clicks and won't do anything else.

I REALLY need some of the work off the hard drive - It's so important to my second year at university.

Any help you can give me I will be eternally grateful. Call me a *******, but I usually back up my work via dropbox anyway but theres some bits I didnt back up yet and it's so important I get them.

I've looked at getting a universal drive adaptor but i've heard about data recovery software but there seem to be so many out there - If my hard drive isnt completely screwed could someone reccomend me one or give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

for a couple of days now, i haven't been able to access my external hard drive (from any computer). the drive doesn't show up in 'my computer' if it is connected from when i boot the machine and if i connect it after windows starts up and then try to access 'my computer', the entire function of 'my computer' freezes (nothing happens if i right click or left click or anything).if i have it connected from boot, the drive still shows up in the device manager and it doesn't appear as yellow so the computer seems to think it's working fine; until i try to do anything like uninstall the driver or disable it, at which point, my computer freezes again.this may seem really stupid but i have a sneaking suspicion that the problem might have come from my girlfriend's computer as i lent her the hard drive and when i got it back, found an infection on it. however, i papped the infected files in the vault and the hdd worked fine for about a week before any problems arose.am i going to need to send it for data recovery or can anyone offer a simple solution?

Answer:IOMEGA external hard drive has just stopped working

Have you tried the drive in another computer?
Do you have any other external drives or USB devices and do they work ok?
What OS are you running?

I would definitely recommend taking the drive to a shop or tech to have a look, if you aren't familiar with data recovery.

The problem could be a corrupt partition table, or other data related - not physical, problem. A reformat will "fix" your drive, but you will lose data. In situations like these, taking the drive to an experienced person will be the best option to avoid making matters "worse", and as a worse case scenario, data recovery software should get your most if not all of your data back.

Most likely, the integrity of the drive has been affected, but the drive itself still holds the data.

Use the Disk Manager to view the partition - - there should be some info if you click on the device. If not, the partition damaged.

I recently purchased a Seagate 500GB FreeAgent Desk external hard drive for backup. I have tried their software which leaves much to be desired. What would you recommend for both purchase and free backup software which will work alone with this external hard drive? I want the capability for full disk backup, selected files backup, and incremental backup as files are changed.
Only simple to use software. Is PC Backup version 10 a really good and simple to use backup program to purchase and will it work alone with my Seagate external hard drive? What about other backup programs to purchase and for free?

Hi,

I have an ageing Dell laptop running Windows XP. As it has a fairly small (40GB) internal IDE hard-drive that is pretty full I use a couple of external drives for non-essential stuff like music, videos etc. A few days ago I switched on one the external drives and nothing happened! I usually access my external drives by going into My Computer and clicking on it there but the icon simply didn't appear. At first I thought it was a problem with the drive itself, but when I tried another drive the same thing happened. So far, I've tried 2 mains-powered external drives, 2 portable drives and several USB flash-drives and I can't access any of them.

I have since tested most of my external memory devices on a relative's laptop/notebook and they work just fine, so it seems to be a problem with the USB ports and/or Window XP missing drivers? If I go into Device Manager the connected HDDs appear okay and it states that everything is working normally. Also, I have checked XP's Disc Management program and they show up in there too, but as unformatted drives, hence why the no-show in My Computer. When I plug in a USB flash-drive it does show up in My Computer, but when I try to access it I get a message saying the drive isn't formatted. But, as I have already mentioned, I have tested the drives on another computer and they all still work fine. Help!
The funny thing is, my wireless mouse, that uses a USB dongle, is still functioning perfectly, as is my ... Read more

Hello. I have looked this problem up on the internet, yet none of the answers have been of much help to me. So now I turn to the experts. Recently my external hard drive (500gb, 400gb free space, Seagate Expansion Portable Drive) has come up with what seems to be a common error: "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I go into my hard drive and five seconds later the error message pops up, then it goes 'windows explorer is restarting.' All my icons disappear for a moment then reappear and my external hard drive has shut down. It never used to do this before - it's just started doing it a few hours ago. My computer is a Windows 7, and the antivirus I use is bullguard (if it's of any use.)I scanned my device for malware or errors but it says there's nothing wrong. Keep in mind this is only on my external hard drive. It never happens anywhere else on my computer.Your help is greatly appreciated!~Seki

Answer:'Windows Explorer has Stopped Working' < External Hard Drive Error

Does this external HD have its own power supply? I believe it does. Some uses report the segregate drives can fail after a few months. That should be rare, but I have seen that in more than one credible place. If the drive is inside of warranty , take it back now! But if the problem is the power and interface, you can test the HD by putting it into a desktop PC as the slave drive, or secondary drive.A new enclosure is about $30 here in the USA.

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Now it shows up as unidentified and not initialized using computer/manage/storage/disk management. Disk Management also gives the optiin to initialize it but I declined because I would like to recover the data. The power light comes on and it spins up with both a USB3 or USB2 connections and is identified as an Iomega eGo drive when I use the USB eject function.
Hard Drive Sentinel does not recognize it at all. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

Lucid Puppy or Peppermint3, in either case you can use Rufus to create your bootable pendrive.

ThinkVantage backup worked for  months on one of my external USB hard disks. THen I bought a bigger one and it continued to work for another 5 months--- but stopped working recently. The backup program doesn't even start when I use the newer external disk. It doesn't get to the stage where it says what percent is completed.   When I switched to the older, external USB hard disk that I used until I bought this one,   it did the backup successfully.   I also tried to delete one of the 4 backups and the ThinkVatage program worked for about an hour.  When it stopped, I looked at the contents of the disk and nothing had been deleted.   Even the free space stayed the same as before.   Does anyone have a suggestion as to the cause or how to solve it? Thanks,   Ben

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

Answer:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

Hi there,

So I had a desktop with a single HDD running windows XP, the desktop overheated and automatically shutoff. The next time I powered on the PC, nothing happened - no BIOS, no beeps, nothing! The PC was pretty old so I just figured it had run it's course and I was thinking about getting a laptop anyway.

So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and after a few days of setting it up I yanked out the hdd from the old XP desktop and plugged it into the laptop's USB port via some SATA to USB cables.

Win7 recognized new hardware and and seemed to install the drive correctly as "USB Storage", but nothing ever appeared in the Windows Explorer. I opened up the device manager and under 'Disk Drives' I saw a 'USB Drive' item. The properties on that item seemed to indicate all the drivers and such were properly installed and the 'device was working properly'. Under the 'Disk Management' section, the disk showed up - but it said it was 'unknown' and 'not initialized', so no partitions showed up (it also prompted me to 'initialize' it, which I DID NOT do).

At this point I've tried several recovery programs, but the biggest issue is that none of the programs actually see the drive, so I can't run the recovery at all. I even tried Hiren's Boot CD, but again, nothing sees the drive - although, I think that I didn't properly install the USB drivers, so I may try that... Read more

About 5 days ago my Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD started running very slow. Transfer speeds dropped to 182kb/s it previously was around 25.6mb/s. So I started backing up as much as I could, but after 5 days and only getting about 300GB backed up I decided to run chkdsk on the drive. That was a bad idea because now I cannot access the drive at all, and I still have 2.12TB of data that isn't backed up.

Drive has been in use since November 2013
It had over 106,000 files on it.

Things that I tried before Chkdsk:

The drive letter used to be M:
In My Computer I had the drive renamed but it changed itself to local disk

Seatools - Passed all the tests when I was able to access the drive. But the drive info said the power on hours were 0 and the drive temperature was 32 degrees F, other external drives were showing around 30,000 power on hours and temperatures around 130-136 degrees F, the one internal drive showed 72 degrees F

Crystal Disk Info - Showed Unknown Drive and no Info

Crystal Disk Benchmark: Took a long time to run but I posted a screenshot of the results

I plugged the drive into a laptop, had the same results

I tried replacing both the power cable in the USB cable, same result

I tried plugging the USB into a USB 2.0 port instead of the 3.0 that it had been in, still the same exact transfer speed

I tried changing the HDD's policies to Better Performance instead of Quick Removal. Same results

I tried to update driver but it says its up t... Read more

Hello,
New here to this forum. Been searching and reading for the past week trying to get my HDD to work.

I was able to access my external HD about a week ago, watched a movie off it and fell asleep. When I awoke the next morning, powered on my laptop, it wouldn't boot up so I shut it down and unplugged the HD and powered it back on. Plugged the HD back in, computer sees it but not showing in My Computer.

Within Disk Management, it shows Disk1 - Unknown - Not Initialized.

Searched and searched and searched for different solutions, tried different things and still nothing. I have tried PW but not showing up to be able to scan it. I have a docking station so I pulled the HD out and plugged it into that. PW was able to see it but no partitions found. Tried to run TestDisk (per some other help treads instructions) with nothing found.
I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable.

I have lots of important files on this HD and I really need them. Sending it to a professional is out of the question.

I'm currently about to boot up pendrive and see if it sees anything there.

I can post any screen shots and try anything again. I have done nothing but scans scans scans.

Thank you!

Hi HAPPYSOk,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I would have been happy to help you had it not been a Western Digital External drive.

Is your drive's model No. this WDBFJK0030HBK?

Your drive is hardware encrypted and should the interface card that contains the encryption chip and the decryption key fail, even if the HDD itself is good, you can't get your data out by hooking it up as a second drive in a dock or sata connect on a desktop. You can get what data is there inside but it will be the encrypted data.

Your statement "I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable." confirms this.

The only way you can get your data back is to send the enclosure and drive to the Western Digital patronised Data Recovery Partners listed by WD here WD Support / Data Recovery Partners. Only they have been supplied with the decrypt key by WD and they will do it in a jiffy for you.

Free consultation, So get a quote from them and you will never again buy a WD drive, I am sure.

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

First thing I'd do is try to run the hard drive manufacturer's disk tools on the drive. It may be dead or dying. Shows as "bad disk" with no file system in PW.

And I'd hope I had a backup of whatever is on it.

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

Answer:Disk unknown, offline, not initialized.

If it's not being recognized properly, there isn't anything else that you can do.

Hello,

My laptop's OS is 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium. I've been usng my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE external HDD for over 2 years. One fine day Win 7 displayed "Do you want to scan & fix removable drive G:" prompt. I check marked both subsequent boxes on the prompt and clicked Scan & Fix. After complete execution of the Scan & Fix (after 12 hrs approx) my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE was shown as Unallocated, Not Initialized & Unknown in the Disk Management and clicking on it windows explorer My Computer window showed the HDD with a Letter but on clicking it an error pop-up with text "Drive G: is inaccessible. Access Denied." was displayed. However, I can still see a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon that gives me a successfully removed hardware message.

It means the disk surface is severely damaged (has developed pretty huge number of bad sectors ). At this point, Imaging the disk and working on the copy is the best step you can do. I would suggest ;

- Create a RAW disk image using "ddrescue". Since your HDD is a 2TB one, you need a larger capacity drive like 3TB one to store the image.

- Try the trial versions of "GetDataBack" and "R-Studio" on the RAW image. Both supports working with disk images created by "dd" and "ddrescue".

I have this 160GB hard drive that I have not been using for a while, yet I am very sure it was working fine the last time I used it.

Today when I plugged it in to my new notebook that is running Windows 8.1 now, it doesn't detect my hard drive. I also tried on other notebook and it has the same issue. So I know the problem is most likely on the hard drive.

Using Command Prompt, it says Disk 1's status is "Online", but size is "0".

Here is the status at Computer Management:
Disk 1
Unknown
Not Initialized

I also tried to Initialize on MBR, but it returned me with "Incorrect function." message.

I tried "Troubleshoot" and the result says:
"USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port..."
My notebook has 3 USB ports where according to the manual, 2 of them are backward compatible to 2.0... I tested on each, but it is still not working.

What should I do? Although I have not been using it for a while, I wish to check the content first before formatting it. I might have some forgotten, yet important files within.

Thanks in advance. Hope I can be assisted here.

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

Hello,

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

Hi, I just got a new Y570 Laptop with a 64 gb ssd. In the disk management window, there are two hard drives listed. There is a disk 0, which has four partitions on it, and a disk 1 which is unknown and initialized. Disk 0 is the HDD that comes with the computer. When I try to initialize Disk 1, I get a message saying The disk cannot find the sector requested. What does this mean? Also, is disk 1 the ssd that I'm supposed to have? Another problem:On my hdd, I have an empty partition that says Healthy (OEM partition). It has no file system or letter assigned to it. It is 14.75 gb, and according to disk management, all 14.75 gb are free. What is it, and can I delete it without affecting anything else on my computer?

Answer:Y570 Unknown Disk 1 Not initialized/OEM Partition

hi galaxion2,first of all, do not delete the 14.75 gb partition. it's hidden/system partition that your computer will need to use it during one key recover process.secondly, as you noticed, disk1 is ssd.

Hi all

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand 750Gb External Hard drive.

I scanned it and rand file restore software to make sure it was totally clean. Then I formatted it too (you cant be too safe). Anyway, it worked long enough for me to put all of my family photos on and music, films work and other photos.

However now it has stopped working. When I plug it in it crashes the computer, and it does the same to the boot up whenever I plug it in. I have tried to use the safe remove hardware, and this is where it gets confusing.

The computer is recognising it in Device manager and the safe removal, but it wont let me safe remove (crashes) and it also wont let me populate the volume to see if that works (crashes again). Sending it off to be fixed isn't an option (my girlfriend would kill me......the photos you see......).

Is there anything I can try, I'm rapidly loosing hair at pulling it out.

Cheers Guys

This forum is great

Steve

Guys i have a similar problem but unlike the problem above my partition magic software does not read my external HD.. The device manager shows the HD is working properly.. and the disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized.. i m giving screen shot for both of them.. My external HD is WD 1TB HD.. it does not matter if i lose the data..but i want the HD to work

Answer:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

I have a 320 gig seagate freeagent external drive. The usb port was damaged, and I have alot of info I want to salvage from it. I opened the case and connected the hard drive to my pc. The HD is a SATA drive, and I have 2 SATA cards connected to my motherboard. The drive isnt being seen by the card or by XP. The drive doesnt have any jumpers. Is there something else I need to do to access the info on the drive?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent 1tb external hd that is no longer working properly. When I plug it in to my comp, it takes forever to be recognized, luckily it's being recognized at all, I guess. Unfortunately, it's being recognized as "Local Disk: (G)" as opposed to FreeAgent. When I click on it to look at the files, the bar at the top seems as though it's reading and progressing, but when it gets close to the end, it stops. Sometimes it says "not responding." Yet other times I get some sort of I/O error. Other times still it says that I need to format the hd.

I really, really need to be able to access these files as they contain home videos and pictures of my little ones that I do not have anywhere else. =/ Yes, completely my bad because I hadn't backed them up anywhere.

I tried the Seatools diagnostic long generic test, and it failed. I also tried r-studio and I got as far as the scan. The screen says that there are read errors at position 0, 512, 1024, etc. Every one of them in multiples of 512. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (1117).

Any suggestions, please?

Also, I took it out of the case and plugged it into a desktop sata connection; but when I go to boot it up and the computer is running through its normal bootup process (when it's doing the DOS-looking stuff before it gets to the Windows processing then follow-up login screen), it recognizes the other hd but stops at the Seagate as... Answer:Seagate FreeAgent 1tb external hd issues

Since the drive failed the Seagate test, it doesn't look good for getting to your files through windows.
Linux is sometimes successful at getting things that windows can't.

You need to download a linux live CD and burn the ISO. (If you don't understand, post again and someone will guide you).
You'll boot your computer with the live CD - it will not change anything in your windows, then attach the Seagate drive. Depending on the live distro, it might be seen automatically. You will need some other hard drive or a large USB stick to copy the files you want over to another device.

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Answer:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

Hi all, Let me start off by saying i have spent the last few hours looking online for anything that would be able to help sort out my problem and found your forum the most helpful and the only one i have signed up to. So thankyou in advance.

I have a WD1200D036 (2.5 120GB external) that is not showing in My Computer nor was it showing up in DM but after going to device management\Disk Drives then Volumes tab and clicking on Populate it turned up in Disk Management as: Disk 1 Unkown not initialized. when i click on it and select initialize disk it opens up and asks me to select disk 1 and what partition style (I just sent with MBR) then click ok. It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

Answer:Exteranl HDD - Unknown, Not Initialized and no disc size in Disk Manag

Hi

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

I bought a Seagate Freeagent 250g external hard drive about 4 years ago and have not any problems with it since. Recently however, after an especially rough moving trip, my computer no longer recognizes the external drive. The power light on the external drive does not turn on either. Everything else I plug in works, so I know it cannot be the computer. I have tried using different cables, trying it on other people's computers and nothing works. In fact, whenever I plug in the external drive, the entire computer slows down significantly and then gets notically faster when I disconnect the sick external drive. Do these descriptions of the problem sound like anything anyone out there has ever come across? Please forward some info if you can. I would really hate to lose all the sentimental files I have in there. Thank you.
