Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive

Question: Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive

Does anyone know how many milliamps this device draws?

The "Technical Specification" provides plenty of info but does not specify the actual current. All it says is that it is powered directly from the USB port. But I need to know exactly what the peak ma of this device is.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I would like to know if the Western Digital Passport External Hard Drive would work with my Toshiba laptop (A100-SK900E), I have seen reviews of the hard drive itself saying that it will not work with SOME laptops, will this work with mine?

Answer:Western Digital Passport External Hard Drive Question Regarding to Laptops...

Seems most likely any problem is associated with driver availability in the operating system being used.  Drivers are available in XP but not in SOME versions of Vista.  Here's a link to comments by other owners.  Below is an extract dated Jan 25 this year..QuoteLike Coolreem, I have spent hours trying to research this drive. WD Support is useless. They kept insisting that something is wrong with my USB port, the drive itself, etc. After 2 hours with Dell Support and upgrading a USB port just for the heck of it, the drive still does not work. Works great on my XP! Some have suggested reformatting the drive itself but I haven't found a way to do this yet. Upgrading to Ultimate is not an option for me - I'm not putting out the money for the upgrade just so I can get this Passport to work.As much as I hate to admit defeat, I think I am throwing in the towel on this one and looking for something else. I'll just consider this poor decision making on my part and a lesson learned. I will NEVER buy another Western Digital just because of the name value. After the utter nonsense from their support department, I may never buy another Western Digital product period!Sorry - cannot answer your question, it looks like a suck-it-and-see problem and hope it's not a lemon!Good luck

I have just bought this external drive and am trying to download the driver onto my laptop from the WD website, as I am running Windows 98SE. I have found the WD Essentials USB 2.0 driver and when I click the DOWNLOAD button a small screen appears with a blue line across the top and the words "File Download". However this box just flashes on and off all the time and locks up the computer. The only way to get rid of it is to switch the power off. I have enabled pop-ups as requested, and have also disabled Norton Antivirus 2005. I have no firewall. I have tried a number of times without success. Can you please help? Many thanks.

For Christmas, I received a Western Digital Passport Essential. It worked in my Desktop and other laptop computers. Afterwards, I bought a Dell Latitude D600 off of eBay. I tried plugging in the drive into my USB port, but there was a power surge. Fixed that, and found another cord. I tried that, but there was another power surge. Many cords later, I found one that works, but it does not recognize the drive, and needs drivers. I scoured Google, but found none. Any suggestions?

Answer:Western Digital Passport Essential not working

Did you try it on the computers that it did work previously? otherwise, it sounds like you fried it.

I have been using this USB drive for some time. I have it divided in to three seperate partitions, but recently (and this is the second time this has happened) XP will no longer detect the already existing partitions on the drive. I am able to see the drive in device manager, it shows up as a WD 2500JB External USB Device, as well as in the manage option when right clicking My Computer. However in the manage window it shows the whole drive as unallocated space. I know that there are files on there, (several GB's of customer backups.) it was there just yesterday. Any ideas on how to get Xp to pull it's head out and see these partitions?

hello friends

I am from india and 2 months back i bought an usb 250 gb external hard drive "my passport series from western digital" with bill and warranty. Now the sad thing is that by accident i placed my hand over the drive and just a little of my weight went on top the drive, it then made screeching sound, since it was connected to my notebook live. Probably the head scratched the plates inside and crashed. well all that hapnd just within fraction of a second and i believe the loss would not have been much(i mean the physical loss, not data).

Now the drive is not functioning. let me assure u that the pressure on the drive was still not much, may be the angle made it worse. So now the drive is though not working but looks perfect anyway. there is no sign of tampering as it has not been tampered. Will i get the replacement for the drive under warranty. if they dont can i argue or sue them. please advise me. i have filed the warranty replacement and courier person will come in next 48 hours to take my drive. But not sure whether i shall get the replacement. Do Reply.

Has anyone purchased a Western Digital Passport portable hard drive recently? The reviews I'm reading are saying that they ship with software installed that cannot be deleted and that mounds a virtual CD drive when connected. I'm wondering if perhaps these reviewers just aren't savvy in deleting partitions using 3rd party utilities or if there really is something in the firmware of the drive that causes this behavior.

Or does anyone recommend another brand for a portable drive? I need a portable drive because an external power source is not practical in this case.

I dont know about that but.............they have changed the interface to where it plugs in though.
So basically you cant take it out of the case...pull off the usb adapter and toss it in PC...or just toss it in your old enclosure.
I remember reading about it here in the forums a few months ago.
IMO this is a big deal versatility is now taken away.
My next purchase will be a seagate......only after a little research ofcourse to make sure they havent done what WD has.

For whats its worth..My hdd in my laptop right now started out as a WD passport...I took the seagate out and put it in the WD enclosure..complete with Vista still on it as well as the recovery partition.
I still use it to back up files...I just copy them over to folders I created great.

I have a WD My Passport which was working fine until today. I plugged it into a number of computers and it is recognized, however, the message I get is " This drive needs to be formatted". I am unable to view any files on the drive, and the WD software program gives the same message.

How can I recover my files from this drive ? I have laptops, with Windows 7 and XP, a desk top with Windows 8, and I could load Vista if that would help ?

Any suggestions ? :cry

I'm looking to buy a new external hard drive, and after reading through reviews on Newegg, I'm not so sure what I should get. Most of them have little to no reviews at all and the ones that do have a decent amount of reviews are completely mixed. This is the best one I've found, in terms of specifications and reviews:

The thing is, I've heard some pretty bad things about Western Digital drives recently. People say they've been failing at very high rates. Someone even said up to 70% of the new drives die early on, although there was no evidence to support this. I've been using the same two Western Digital external drives, heavily, for almost 10 years now and they've never given me any problems. Are newer WD drives really unreliable, or would it be safe to go ahead and purchase this?

Answer:Western Digital My Book Essential (External HDD) - Reliable?

I've heard people mention "avoid WD green drives". Apparently the blue and black are more reliable. There was also a string of failures with Seagate drives that I'm aware of. I have two WD external drives but neither is used extremely hard.
Wait until someone else weighs in.

Hello I am kind of a newbie in need of some instruction.

My computer was failing so I bought a Western Digital MyBook essential 1TB external harddrive.

My computer would only run in SafeMode so I had to do what I could to save my files.
I saved 56GB of files onto the external without setting it up.

I have rebooted my computer COMPLETELY and everything runs perfect, and now I am ready to retrieve my files.
But when I attempt to open the files, it says ACCESS IS DENIED.

I have tried multiple things to take ownership of the files and it says I have the ownership of the file but it won't let me open the file.

Heres what I have done to try and fix this problem.

-Safe Mode administrator account and have taken full ownership of files and folders.
-Safe Mode administrators and have taken full ownership of files and folders.
-Used my administrator accounts and have taken full ownership of files and folders.
-Used PC Inspector file recovery and it copied majority of my files over but text files are in some weird language and the pics still wont open nor will the mp3 files.
-I didn't get to setup the HD too much before I put the files on it.
-Ive tried recovering the files on multiple computers and laptops, same problem.

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Answer:Accessing files off a Western Digital MyBook Essential 1b external

Do you mean access is denied on the external?

Did you format it, at all? I always re-format externals as NTFS, some are FAT32.

Is your account an Administrator account? you might want to go into safe mode and see what you can do.

You also might want to change the USB port you are using.

WD had a bad period for a couple of years in the race with Maxtor, but their products have improved to the level they once had, since last year.

If you connect the sata drive with USB2, it will be horribly slow.

If your computer has an e-sata connection, buy an e-sata external disk and the performance will be equal to internal drive.

There are also e-sata adapter boards to put into your computer, allowing you to connect the e-sata drive.

Just something to think about.

First post so please go easy on me. I have one of the above and on first use showed no problems on my windows XP Laptop. Then i came to use it and got a block from Mcafee virus detected and prevented the WD from operating. I got onto WD help desk who informed me this was a problem they had notified Mcafee about and they were doing a fix. I should leave it a few days and then update my Mcafee. This i have done numerous times, still the same problem. The only way I can run the WD is by disabling Mcafee and installing the wdsync file again. The virus it shows is WDSYNC_ 7.0.328.exe.Another issue is that when I disconnect the WD from my Laptop I loose my wireless connection and have to re boot the computer and have windows connect the wireless connection. Probably have not made my self clear but any help appreciated.

A friend has bought a Western external hard drive for 39.99 from Tesco and there were no instructions on how to back up files to it, apart from Chinese! . Eventually I opened the My Documents window and opened the External drive window (F drive) and selected the whole of My Documents, including My Music and My Pictures, and dragged and dropped and it copied all of the selected files to the external drive. I safely removed it and insterted again and checked the files were copied to the drive and managed to drag one back to desktop and it copied it back ok, but I wanted to transfer some of the files to another computer, and it would not recognise the USB in the second computer. I feel worried that if the need to re-establish these files onto a new computer, if the backup was needed, that it would not work. Any ideas. When I first inserted the USB for the external hard drive autoplay did not come up and I had no idea what to do, but treated it the same as a flash drive and it seemed to work. But it should surely open on another computer, as that would be the point of the backup.

When it is plugged into the AC outlet, it sounds like it is running, but when I connect it to any USB port on any computer it won't be detected (show up in the drives list in explorer). This is self-contained unit bought from a store, not an enclosure for internal hard drives. What can I do to retrieve data off of this USB drive? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I am being told to back up my PC onto an external hard drive in case my HDD fails.I would appreciate any advice on the following:(1) Can I back up my programs (Windows etc) onto an external HDD, or is it just for files (pictures, Word documents etc)?(2) PCWorld are currently offering the following drive in their sale, and people elsewhere are saying it is a bargain: Western Digital Elements 3.5" 1TB. Sale price 68.Is it worth buying one? I don't have thousands of pictures or thousands of files, but who knows about the future? (3) If not, I would welcome any recommendations on which one to buy. Is there one that gets its power through USB, rather than having yet another power plug? Many thanks, in anticipation. And a Merry Christmas to all.

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here so please bear with me.

Lately I seem to be having problems with my WD 1TB external hard drive. I noticed the problem about 2-3 weeks ago when I went to play some music from Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player took a very long time to open and when I went to play some music files it would freeze up and I would have to end the Windows Media Player process through the Task Manager. After that I tried going directly into my external hard drive to play the music, but Windows Media Player would not play any file I chose. I noticed as I was opening the external hard drive through Windows Explorer it took a very long time for all the files to load and there is only 48GB worth of data on the external hard drive. I then started looking around online and found that it may be some type of security issue or that I should run CHKDSK. I tried to change the security settings so I could gain access for my files, but it kept coming up as Access Denied. Then I decided to run CHKDSK, which was somewhat of a mistake/problem because it took about 4 or 5 days to finish (I checked both boxes in CHKDSK). After CHKDSK finished it said that some problems were found and fixed, but as of now I am still having problems trying to access my files.

Regardless of what CHKDSK accomplished, I still think that there is a security issue and I cannot figure out how to fix it. The only way that I can get everything to work is to go file by file a... Read more

Answer:External Western Digital Hard drive not being recognized

Under Disk Management in the computer look there to see if its mounted but shows up as not formatted or not partitioned. It might be there but no drive letter assigned. If you see it there DO NOT PARTITION OR FORMAT IT... instead you will need to run software to scan this drive and correct for damaged file tables. If the drive is not detected there then the drive may be damaged. If under warranty you could return the drive for a replacement but all data would be gone and potentially in the hands of whoever gets your dead drive. Or you can open the enclosure and mount the drive as a slave drive into a desktop computer and maybe then see it in disk management to work on its data recovery or if its the USB to SATA daughter board that blew on the external enclosure through this process of power loss, then your drive might mount up and get a drive letter as a 2nd hard drive in the computer in which all data would be accessible without a data recovery process needed.

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this.

I enjoy making short films as a hobby and I run a couple YouTube channels that I upload to frequently. I went to open up one of my project files in Sony Vegas Movie Studio but for some reason, it took ages to open up. I had to sit there for a minute or so just for the program to begin and once it opened it took maybe two more minutes to open the project file.

The program was running really slowly and it was sluggish to try and edit anything. At first, I assumed it was a problem with my computer. It had been working just fine the day before so I rebooted the computer and tried again only to confront the same issue once more.

I have a 1TB HDD in my computer and a 1TB Western Digital External HDD that I use to store most everything that had to do with my films. I always have the External HDD plugged into my computer.

Anyway, the reason I think it's the External Hard Drive failing is because I noticed going into Windows Explorer that any time I would open a folder on the actual computer's HDD it would open just fine, but opening a folder on the External Drive would have me wait for about 20-30 seconds.

After this, I ejected and unplugged the External Drive and tried to open a Project File in Vegas that only used things stored on my computer and it loaded just as quick as always. So I would be lead to believe that the reason it was running so slow is because it was loading a Project File that used components stored on the Exter... Read more

Answer:Western Digital 1TB External Hard Drive Failing

Have you tried plugging the external into some other port on the PC?

You need to go to WD web site and download their disk tool for that particular drive. It will have a couple of tests. Try the simple quick one first.

And look up the return procedures for the drive at the WD web site if it fails the drive tests.

You might want to make an image of the drive with a tool like Macrium to preserve whatever is now on it in the current state.

Good afternoon,
I am sure this has been mentioned on here many times, but every time I search for my problem, I always get the same results: Third party this, format this, backup your data that.

Here is what is going on. I have a 2TB external hard drive that is more than 90% full. backing up my data via third party software is not an option because I don't have room to store the data anywhere. The copious amount of data on the drive is also why I can not just simply format the drive to change the file system. I have also tried a couple of methods involving check disk commands and using disk management. neither of these methods have worked out in my favor. This problem has really shaken my confidence with computers and troubleshooting. up until this point I thought I was pretty well educated on fixing stuff like this, but I really can not figure this one out.

So here's the summary: large hard drive, no formatting, no backing up the data, RAW to NTFS.

Thank you.

A friend of mine thinks he has fried his 120GB Western Digital External USB hard drive and wants to know if there's any way to retrieve the data and/or fix it.
It is a WD Model WD800B008-RNN 120GB drive.

What he did was he accidentally plugged the 30V power adapter from his printer into the 12V hard drive. He brought the drive to work today and I can even smell the fact that it is slightly burnt.

He says when he plugs it in now, the two lights on the front (one green and one red) light up, and his computer seems to recognize that the drive is there, but he can't access it.

Is there anything that can be done to recover the data? Or is the only possibility that of bringing it to a disaster recovery company which charges an arm and three legs just to attempt to fix/recover it (which often still isn't possible).

I have this in my machine that is Xp for about a year then in a new Vista computer i got last summer everything was working fun until i booted up today and when i clicked on it in my computer a message would appear saying "J:\ is not accessible, The Parameter is incorrect." I really just need to get the files off of that and onto my home computer, I despritly need those files. Is the WD my book an external HDD?.(see last question)If the drive shows in My Computer can you run CHKDSK or Defrag?.Have you checked Event Viewer for any error messages?.Is the listed in device manager?.If its and external HDD,I have known the USB interface to fail.If its at all possible(seek advice first),can you remove it from the caddy and use as an internal drive?.Just be careful, doing even the basic procedure could cause data loss.

I have been using this WD hard drive (1 TB) for several months now without problems. My main computer crashed with a little help from my fists, now I am trying to rebuild an older computer, it was partitioned (i guess) with both Linxus and DOS, and the program files and all my original computer back up folders, videos and pics are stored on my external harddrive. When I plugged it into the DOS computer, it does have windows XP, but an error messgae popped up stating the e/drive needed to be formatted. I had never seen this error messgae and did not format the drive, but it wouoldn't allow me to access the drive. I tried again after re booting the computer, and I wasn't sure what the formatting involved so I hit YES, a WARNING message popped up telling me all my files would be erased if I formatted, and I immediately hit NO and unpllugged my drive. Now I can't see any files on the drive, although it recognizes it on other computers, it will not show the space capicity or free space, and it says it in NTFS format. Did me plugging this drive into a DOS computer change the settings somehow from FAT32 to NTFS? and if so How do I save my files? I did not format it, so I don't believe the files have been erased or it should show the free space as 1TB, right? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I will die if I lost all thiese files

Answer:Western Digital External Hard Drive Format error, please help

Hive info on the HDD is protected. Missing drive info? That's why your getting that error message to format it but you don't. What OS did you have prior?

My Western Digital external hard drive just stopped working. There was no fall or energy issues as far as I know. It was perfect until yesterday, but today it keeps flashing a white light in front of it very quickly (each 1 or 2 seconds). Every blinking is accompanied by an intern spinning sound.

The power button also stopped working, and pressing it does nothing. My Mac Pro won't recognize the hard drive anymore, and it doesn't show up on Finder or Disk Utility. It looks like the device is frozen.

I tried changing the usb port, changing the outlet and reseting the computer, but nothing worked. I couldn't check for problems via third part software or check for firmware or driver updates because I have no access to the device whatsoever, as my Mac doesn't show it anywhere.

I can't remember the model of the hard drive, unfortunately. I bought it back in 2009. It looks like an older version of the "My Book Studio", but instead of just a little dot in the front of it, it has an oval lightened shape. (the one that keeps blinking).

I am kind of desperate because a lot of my work stuff is there! Please help!
Thanks folks

Can someone knowledgeable help me by telling me which of the following 3 external hard drives would be the better choice in terms of value and reliability.

1) Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential, 2 year warranty,
WDBAAF0010HBK -113.99
2) Western Digital 1.5TB My Book Home Edition, 3 year warranty,
WD15000H1CS - 139.99
3) Seagate 1.5TB Free Agent, 5 year warranty,
ST315005FDB2E1 - 139.99

I don't really need the included security software or backup software since I will just save the files that I want to be saved. If the choice was just between these 3, which would it be? I tried doing a google search and reading customer reviews on retailer sites, but it is very confusing. Some people will have good things to say and others will have bad things to say about each one. A friend of mine told me to keep #2 since he and a few other people he knows have owned and still own several Western Digital external drives with no problems.
Thanks for the help.

I can browse this forum for data recovery methods, but before I jump into that, I want to explain the events that led up to this terribleness.

I've been running this external hard drive on my XP desktop for a little over a year and have had no problems. I've plugged it into numerous other XP computers, several laptops running Vista, and even a few Macs. There have been no problems and I've been able to take files on and off with ease on all these different computers. Today though, my friend just bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista, and with my successful history I plugged it in without any doubts... the "installing new devices" thing, then the statement saying that the device is ready to use. But upon trying to browse the device, we get a long loading process that's halted with a "This device is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?". I've read other people's posts of their similar predicaments, but it seems that it's more of a "I just plugged this into a Mac and now I can't access it" thing. I know Sony has a tendency of ruining everything, but I really have a feeling there's something else involved. Something seriously needs to be done about such a ruin-everything process.

If I was a freaker-outer, now would be the time. Years of work gone to waste.

I have Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed. All drives work fine and there is no issue on the drives except for one major problem, and I don't have a clue as to why.

I have been having BSOD in my FAT32 500gig external hard drive. If I go to delete a file or folder, it blue screens instantly, if I check the box that says 'delete immedialtely, do not send to recycle bin', then it doesn't blue screen. If I save word document in the external HD it blue screens on me.

It is 500gig, there is around 55gig free, and it is formatted to FAT32 for accessablity.

I have some small usb flash drives I occasionally plug in the computer, they are FAT32, and they work fine.

This is my most crucial data hard drive, and it has been used flawlessly with XP SP2 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.

This is my first encounter with 64 bit operating system. Is there something I need to know about FAT32 external hard drives? Is there not enough room for it to do anything? Was it just a bad Win7 installation?

Once again I have never had an issue in any other 32 bit operating system. Could it be because it is FAT32?

Most times I can access the files in the drive, I can go deep into the subfolders on the drive, but once I try to save anything or delete anything it instantly crashes and goes to the BSOD.

Anyone please help - the files are too important (backup images, business backups, etc...) for this to happen. I could revert back to 32 bit, but I have heard ... Read more

Just the other day my wife and I are watching several movies on my external hard drive, which has a plethora of movies we've gathered. It's not even that old, less than a year old.

here's what I've done:

I have three computers in our house

-Windows 7 64bit Desktop (custom built)
-Windows 7 32bit laptop (Dell Vostro 1700)
-Windows 7 32bit Toshiba)

Not a single one of these computers even so much as detect the hard drive at all now. I tried a different usb cable as well, and i got nothing. I tried different wall outlets, it still blinks when I plug it in the computer, but the computer doesn't remotely see it.

Here's exactly what happened leading up to this, so no one is confused:

I first noticed a problem when I tried to download a new movie using utorrent. It started the file, and then failed saying something was wrong with like cyncro or something. Whatever, I looked up the error code. Appears others have had this issue as well, so I did what they said, "chkdsk /r" on my hard drive (J:/). It got to step five, but froze nothing, for over 6 hours it sat there and not a thing at all.

So I cancelled it, closed it out, and restarted the computer with the device plugged in.

it reboots, and now...absolutely nothing. It doesn't even see that a drive exists.

like I said, I've changed out the cables, moved power outlets, tried different computers and different ports, and done these steps on each of them:

1. Checked device manager...... Read more

I have a USB 2.0 Western Digital hard drive. It is the 120 gig model. neither of my computers will recognize the drive. These computers being a laptop and a desktop, both running XP SP2 and USB 2.0 enabled.

I did a little research and it seems some have problems with the USB ports supplying enough power to the drive. Is this the case? The reason I bought this one is that it did not require a power supply.

I think my wife stated that when the digital camera is also plugged into a USB drive the computer recognized the drive. I have not tried it, but I will take her word for it.

Any ideas?

I have an external 120gb western digital passport drive with a bunch of movies stored on it. I was wondering if playing movies directly off this drive is bad for it and if it will significantly decrease the life of the drive??

Answer:Playing Movies off Western Digital Passport Drive

Well any use of a hard drive decreases it's life but they are built to be used. Everything ever built would last longer if never used but that's a bit pointless. You may as well not have one. They are built to last years. External hard drives in theory may last longer because you can actually turn them off when not in use as opposed to internal ones which are always spinning away merrily. But don't worry about it, turn it off when not in use and play away happily.

I purchased a Western Digital 250gb external hard drive (My Passport Essential I think) a few years back with the idea that I would use it as a backup to my main computer and/or an alternative hard drive storage for my music. But I have been sadly deceived and luckily I have only used it as a sync/temporary access drive when I needed to print stuff away from home.

Well the time has come to upgrade to a new computer (with more space and speed etc than current) and I have been trying to find ways to transfer my existing files across.

In my search, I have stumbled across many forums/websites that advise the WD external hdd and the preinstalled software (WD Sync/Dmailer Sync whichever it is now) is not suitable as a backup drive and that if the computer is erased and at any point resync'ed, the data on the external hdd will be deleted. Also many people advise they have lost files as a result of computer crashes etc and cannot retrieve the files from either their WD hdd or their computer. All of which has prompted me to start this thread.

Can anyone please tell me, is there a way to...
1. Transfer my files to my new computer using the WD external hdd? NB. Not as important as I have alternative methods/may start another thread.

2. Turn the WD hdd into a back up drive without purchasing the Dmailer Backup software? (NB. I am not opposed to buying new software but I feel I have been "done" by a highstreet (actually retail park) computer store and I don't par... Read more

ok my hard drive goes through alot. i bring it to work and friends house but recently i pretty much filled it up to about 15 gigs from full capacity then when i was in a friends house and i tried to transfer some tv programs to catch up on but the speed was unbelievably slow. i put it down to the hard drive being so close to full so i said fine. then i brought it home and plugged it into my ps3 so i could watch some movies and i watched one movie no problem and then about half way through the second the ps3 froze but didnt crash just came out of the movie i was watching and now the read speeds are unbelievably slow and the ps3 or computer freezes while trying to read just the folder list in explorer and sometimes the crc error comes up and what i have seen on the internet that is normally to do with cds/dvds not external hard drives. anyways i bought a new 2tb hard drive and tried to copy some files over and it just seems to stall and not copy the files. i had intended copying the files then reformatting the hard drive but it seems to be something more serious than i thought. i dont know what it could be so i am looking for a different prospective. can anybody help me?

Dear UsersWin Xp is not recognizing 250GB HDD how to make it recognize 250GB HDD and what would be the file system for the partition FAT32 or NTFS (Recognizing means not showing its full size)thanks

Answer:Windows XP Pro and 250GB Western Digital HDD

What do you mean by not recognizing it?The best file system is debatable.I'd recommend NTFS for (supposed) speed benefits over FAT32 and newer features, plus you can use files more than 4Gb in size with it, which you can't with FAT32.Also, I heard Windows XP won't format volumes over a certain size with FAT32, hopefully someone can clarify whether this is right or not. However, NTFS is subject to the "RAW phenomenon".  I don't understand this, but I've seen it mentioned, hopefully someone can explain that too.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Dear All,

First of all, I would like to offer my congratulation for your definitely helpful forum. Concerning my laptop, I have a Toshiba A100-906. I have upgraded its memory to 3GB and now I would like to upgrade its hard disk as well. I am thinking of buying a *Western Digital Hard which has 250 GB capacity*. I am wondering, what is the maximum hard disk size for this laptop and if it supports the hard disk which mentioned above.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A100-906 and Western Digital 250GB

Well?not easy to say if a 250GB HDD would be recognized by BIOS because Toshiba doesn?t provide any details about max possible HDD size.

Fact is that a BIOS doesn?t support all HDD sizes due to some limitations.

But in my opinion it?s not possible to use the 250GB HDD. I think it?s simply too large.
However, this is only my suggestion and maybe you should test it to ensure if it?s possible or not.

Best regards and have a nice day buddy

I've owned my Western Digital My Passport Essential 250 GB USB 2.0 for almost 3 years and its primary use is for storing my music collection (includes itunes, amazon downloads, files converted from vinyl, ect.). Up until a week ago, I've had no problems with the drive but after plugging it an and being asked to scan for errors which I ended up doing.

I never received errors on this drive up until I did this recent scan. The scan affected random music on my drive. Some of the tag information was removed and I'm unable to play those songs. Some of the songs, which usually range 3-5 mb are down to 32.0 kb. Example

Another problem that I get is that some of my music is now skipping (usually around the last 20 seconds of the songs). To attempt to find a solution, I searched the web and called Western Digital and found that disabling the audio enhancements and using a different usb cable/port were suggested. I tried both and ended up with no results. I know this is something that should have been backed up, which is the intention (if I can get the music back) whenever I can afford a new drive.

Is it possible to get the music back or are the files permantly corrupted (flushing away tons of money I spent on itunes and amazon over the years)?

So I have a 6 month old WD passport 500gb external usb 2 hd. I have it partitioned into an ntfs and fat32 partitions

I plugged the hd into an internet cafes computer and it didn't recognise. Since then no computers will recognise the hd. I have tried several recovery software including the wd own software. Also tried a different, shorter cable. The light starts up as normal and the hd doesn't make any unusual noises but after a second or 2 the light goes dim like there is no activity inside

I also tried chkdisk from command and still nothing. If I could just get the hd to show up maybe I can use these recovery programs to recover data. Even if I lost the data and just got to use my hd again I would be happy.

Any ideas from anyone would be HUGELY appreciated. I have spent hours on google trying to find a solution short of sending it away for repair ( which would cost more than its worth ). Also heard a trick of putting it in the freezer but I'm not sure about any of this!

Answer:Western Digital Passport will not format

My advice is to purchase a good quality enclosure and hard drive and build your own drive. It only take 10-15 minutes to assemble an external + the time to format the drive.

In many WD "My Passport" externals WD used a hard drive with a non standard SATA interface. If at some point it should become necessary to try to recover data from the non standard SATA drives WD used, you cannot do so in a conventional manner, the drive would need to be shipped to a WD repairer who has the equipment necessary to use with the WD non standard interface.

Download and save from here when it has been saved burn to disk.

Set the BIOS to boot from the optical drive insert the Ubuntu disk and then when the Ubuntu OS boots up you will get an option the try or install -use the TRY option the other option will INSTALL it!! - it will then load the OS. When fully loaded in the bottom left hand corner you will find all the drives that are installed internally and externally.

Click on the on the drive you want and then proceed to open it out as in my pic. (It is a bit like opening it out in Windows) If you need to see (or save) docs pics etc plug in a drive of some sort and just copy / paste them to that - done!

NB When you have one drive open the others will be listed at the top as well as the bottom. Some files it cannot open but mostly it can all.

Any queries post back

Hello, I have attached two photos to try and show what the hard drive looks like.

My hard drive stopped being recognized by any computer whatsoever. The drive runs, but doesn't connect. There is very sensitive data on there I need.

Does anyone know what type of connection this hard drive has? I want to try and hook it up to a USB from the hard drive directly. I have IDE/SATA to USB connectors, but nothing that can connect this hard drive. If anyone can help me figure out the connection, I can go to Fry's and purchase any needed hard ware.

I had same issue with same type of pc and USB Western Digital Passport. Problems was on laptop usb ports that had gone broken. Laptop didnt have warraty anymore so i had to connect USB-DISK to docking stations usb port that is still working. Other solution is to buy usb2 PCMCIA adapter. Mouse worked on laptop port but no harddrive so i think its was some power issue that laptop usb cannot give enoght power to run harddrive.Message Edited by outouser on 04-03-2009 12:04 PM

Okay, i have a western digital my passport hard drive that i got back in august of 2009. so like a year and a half years old. well approximately 4 months ago all of a sudden it would start, windows would connect to it, then you would hear "click" and it would restart. and the process would repeat and repeat. then i've realized that it was the power, is there something i can modify in windows to fix this?

Answer:Western Digital My Passport won't start

Ah, clicking sounds from HDDs often are indicative that it has bit the dust. I'm rather confused what was meant by "... then I realized that it was the power,"

Do you have another computer you could plug the drive into to see if it works?

Earlier six months ago I bought from Saudi Arabia the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB.
I connected it to my pc and it worked properly.
Today I connected it another PC, which recognized it as an "USB Device" and wasn't able to complete the installation.
I canceled the installation and from that moment the device is unrecognizable on any computer, including my pc in which it worked on earlier...
Now I am in India. can you guide me how to fix the problem?

Answer:western digital my passport no recognize my pc

Hi Jamalkh, Welcome to TSF. I am on the east coast of the United States so this might take awahile as our time difference is so large. However I am going to give you some links to some information that may help you resolve the issue you are experiencing. From what I have read about this particular problem It seems to be happening to people running Windows Vista more than to people using Windows XP However I don't suspect that the problem is so much with the operating system on your computer but rather with the external HD itsself. One solution to this problem that I have seen is to use a shorter cord from the EXT. HD to the computer. If you are using a cord that is 6 foot or longer that could cause the computer to not see the device. Another thing that I am wondering is if when you canceled the installation process you inadvertantly caused an issue with XP itself. Let's try something simple and see if this will solve the problem. I want you to do a system restore back to just before this happened, that way if it is being caused by a simple setting change or something it will restore the setting and fix the problem.
Make sure that the external hard drive is no longer plugged in and then perform the steps below.

Go to start - programs - acessories - system tools - system restore.
Click next.
select a highlighted date on the calender just before this problem occured.
select the system check point on the right.
Click on restore or ok or whatever it says at the bottom.

I just recently ordered a case off Dealextreme; a 3.5" case, which is only big enough to support a laptop hard drive. I can still use it, but is there any case replacement I can buy for it? Thanks guys.

Answer:Western Digital MyBook Essential 1.5TB help

your question isn't clear. a 3.5" enclosure is big enough to house a desktop hard drive. I'm not seeing what your problem is.

1T/B Western Digital external drive not being recognized

Hello everyone,
I have a WD 1T/B external hard drive that is not being recognized by my computer anymore. It just stopped working. When I plug the USB cable in, Windows recognizes that the device is there, and says that it has installed the approapriate software for the device and it is ready to use. However, the drive does not appear in My Computer. Also, I have right-clicked on my computer and then the Manage option, and under Disk Management, I do not see the drive. I have all of my sports games and music on the drive. I just need some help on how to solve this problem.

Answer:1T/B Western Digital external drive

Tried another PC? Its possible something in the enclosure died and the drive itself is fine. Could open the enclosure up and put the drive in another one or put it internally in a PC.

First off, let me just admit that this problem is wholly of my own making. It's my fault for futzing with a perfectly good working situation and screwing it up by messing with drivers. Yes, a cardinal sin in Windows world, I know. But just in case someone out there is an expert willing to help, I'd appreciate it very much.

I have a Western Digital 1 TB My Passport USB 3.0 drive, model number wdbbep0010bbk-03. The drive was working just fine on my self-built PC, running Windows 7 Professional x64. I perceived some slowness in the USB 3.0 transfer rate and decided that I needed to install the SES driver from Western Digital, which led me to uninstall the drivers for the device, restart the computer, plug the drive back in and let Windows find the drivers. Alas, this did not happen. Windows just said that it didn't find any drivers for My Passport 07A8. There was no mention of SES drivers. When I forced the SES drivers on the hard drive (downloaded from Western Digital), they installed but in Device Manager, Western Digital Drive Management had a yellow exclamation mark and nothing worked. During all this, the drive does not show up in Windows Explorer or in Disk Management.

I plugged the hard drive into a W7Pro x64 machine at work today to see what happens there, and Windows Update automatically installs the hard drive in two places in the Device Manager, one under Disk Drives listed as My Passport 07A8 and then under Western Digital Drive Management as SES Device. The driver... Read more

Just my view. Plug this WD HDD in some other computer. Use Double driver app or any other driver backup tool to backup that driver, and put it in your PC. ((Did this for my scanner and it worked)).

Hello, i'm moving back to 10 recently. I recall on 1st version i tried, when i plugged my WD Passport, i was asked what to do. Now not anymore. There is an autorun app that's launching to unlock the drive (hardware encryption enabled). How do i fix that?

Answer:Western Digital Passport drives autorun?

Is the autorun application running from the drive or from the system? If from the drive, delete the autorun.ini or any executables on the drive. If you cannot, try enabling hidden files and delete it. Otherwise you may have to format the drive

Answer:western digital HDD my passport usb port broke off.

You can easily just take the HDD out and put it in a caddy; you may even see better data transfer rates if you get a good caddy.

I mistakenly plugged in my hard drive with the cable twisted and has hence not seen on any system I plugged it into afterwards,it sounds as though it is spinning inside with the indicator light on but wouldn't just come up, the light blinks but nothing is seen in my computer nor disk management,I have tried different cables, system but nothing.
Is there a way I can get my files back?

Answer:My 500GB Western Digital My Passport not seen in the system

You can try removing it from the enclosure. It will void the warranty, but if you are more interested in the data than the warranty it's worth a shot.

My guess is your physically damaged the plug when you forced it in the wrong way (the unit is keyed, so you must have used considerable force to do that), but the actual drive inside is probably undamaged. Remove it from the case and hook it up via SATA.

Actually - I did a little research on this and I guess it will depend on what version you have. Apparently the B8B version has the USB controller built into the drive itself, so you wouldn't be able to do as I suggested.

Check out this video - this guy explains why the B8B version is different.

I recently purchased and installed a Clover Electronics Surveillance system for my business. This has an internal 500 GB hard drive. One of the ways that I can view the information that it is saving is to copy it to a USB which seems to work OK using a USB stick. But I can?t put much on one, so I ordered a Western Digital My Book Essential 500 GB external drive. The system will not recognize it. I tried the WD on my laptop and desktop ? it seems to work perfectly on there ? so believe it is something with the Clover system. I called Clover support, they had no idea why it wasn?t working, said it should work as soon as I plugged it in ? but of course it doesn?t. His only thought was maybe because the HD was the newest model. Anyone had any experience with this type of problem?

Answer:Western Digital My Book Essential Problem

Not sure the relevance and how much the Clover system acts like (or is actually based on) a Windows PC but here's a thread i've been working on to solve why the USB external drive no longer appears when connected to a Windows XP PC

I installed this external storage unit recently to backup my system. It has the capability of automatic updating any files or programs as they occur while connected to my laptop. I am not a heavy user of my laptop and the only updates I receive are from W7, Adobe, Java and frequently from Windows Defender. At present I have the device connected via USB and it is on/off whenever I login/out of the laptop. Is there any danger of damaging the unit as I presently do by constant use. Thanks

Answer:Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential

In my opinion an external USB drive should only be on when accessing, storing or deleting data.

I never used a external storage device so please bear with me. I just installed this device and had no problems with the downloads. It went thru the gyrations and made a backup of the C & D drives I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that it is installed and a icon is on the task bar i opened it the program and it the screen appears and indicates each catagory and the amount of space used. Am I to assume the backup was successful???????????? In addition, when I sign off the laptop the light on the device remains lit. Is this correct

Answer:Western Digital 500G My Book Essential

I would say the backup was successful. You can look at the contents of the drive using Windows Explorer - which is what I think you are referring to. The drive will stay on (the light will be on) as long as you have the drive plugged in. I also use a WD My Book for my system images and backups. I usually disconnect mine from the USB port and unplug from the power it when I am not actually using it.

does anybody have a solution for me dont wanna lose 300+gb of data

Answer:western digital external drive issues

Those are some of the classic signs that the drive is failing. Your options are to try some recovery software, free or otherwise, try to image the drive with something like Acronis True Image with the ignore bad sectors option turned on (check which version supports that option before using), or possibly running a program like SpinRite from targeted at the drive (Ideally making an image first to get what you can and then run SpinRite which may very well make it possible to recover all the data...or kill the drive if its a mechanical problem because SpinRite works the drive pretty hard.

I have an external Western Digital HD that is playing up. When plugged in it just emits a "beep beep" and the power lights do not come on, also it does not show up on "My computer" anyone got any ideas?

Answer:western digital external drive (not about the lawsuit though)

Well, first stop it to try it on another machine. If it fails there, you'll probably have to contact WD if it's under warranty, and crack the case and test the drive itself if the warranty has expired.

Hi I am just about to be treated to a new External desktop hard drive as a gift. I know there are cheaper drives but I have narrowed it down to the choice of a Seagate 640GB or 500GB Freeagent Xtreme or a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500GB. I want the USB AND Esata interface. The Seagate is about 30 dearer than the Western Digital but has a 5 year warranty and Firewire as well as USB and esata. Western digital has 3 year warranty. Can anybody give me any information to help me make the decision and decide whether the 30 extra is worthwhile. Thanks in advance.

Answer:HELP Seagate or Western Digital external drive ?

I have a Seagate OneTouch external hard drive (because I got the 400GB model at a very reasonable price at the time), but I've used Western Digital internal drives for many years. Both are excellent products and have proved spot on reliability wise.
