Toshiba L500 Touchpad Keyboard not working (odd)

Question: Toshiba L500 Touchpad Keyboard not working (odd)

Hi there,

I reinstalled Windows 7 (from a Windows 7 disk not the Toshiba recovery files).
And everything was working fine, but after restarting once after some updates the mouse and keyboard stopped working!
I found I could get the keyboard to work by pushing the power button to send it to sleep then waking it up, but then the mouse still didn't work.
I can push F2 on the keyboard to get into the BIOS, but can't navigate in it (but can with a USB keyboard.)
Mouse and keyboard don't work in safe mode even.
USB keyboards and mice work fine all the time.

The laptop is a

I really don't understand would could cause this all of a sudden!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Swapped motherboard in this laptop because the old one had died. After plugging everything in and double checking all of my connections, here are the symptoms I am having now:

When the machine boots to windows I have no keyboard or touch pad. I have keyboard function at post long enough for me to hit f2 and get to the CMOS settings, after that I lose keyboard, except for using the function key and f4 to change monitors,

On boot up I can turn number lock on and then nothing again. I have tried resetting the CMOS, o have tried pulling all the cards like wireless and modem, tried different sticks of ram and even pulling the hard drive. If you have any thoughts or have seen this before please clue me in,

Satellite Pro L500-19X running windows 7.

The machine boots ok, then at the login screen neither the touchpad or keyboard works.
The only way I can overcome this is to go back to a previous restore point.
After this, the machine runs fine until I power off, on powering up again, I get the same issue.

The machine has the latest updates applied.

Any pointers welcomed.

Can you use both devices in ?safe mode? or when you enter BIOS settings?

If possible run HDD recovery installation and test functionality with ?factory settings?.
I know, it is most radical method but best way to test hardware functionality.

I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L500 and all the sudden my touchpad stop working.
I tried check in the control panel the options for mouse but I can not even find it in there.

Any idea of how to solve it.
Do I have to take it to a technical center?

Answer:Satellite L500: touchpad stoped working

Firstly; please check if the touchpad has not been disabled accidently.
Check FN + F9. This function enables and disables the touchpad.

Furthermore you can go to control panel -> mouse -> Device settings
Here you should also check if the touchpad is on or off.

Last but not least an touchpad driver update or reinstallation might help

No disply on my toshiba satellite L500,power supply led is getting on .

Answer:Toshiba satellite L500 not working, No disply

If you still get lights on the edge of the laptop & you can hear the fan spinning and harddisk clicking a bit but nothing at all is appearing on the display then it's either the screen or the power inverter that have gone. Either way it's not really something you can do yourself, take it to a technician to sort out. If you are not getting any lights, fan or clicking sound then it is a power issue - the LED doesn't necessarily mean that the power supply is ok. Again, not much you can do yourself, take it to an expert."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Answer:Wireless not working in toshiba satellite l500 in windows 7

For a start, turn off CAPS LOCK - it's considered to be shouting & many will ignore you.Did the laptop come with Windows 7 or have you installed it later? Are you sure there are drivers available for the wireless card - check the manufacturer's website if necessary. Some Toshiba laptops have a separate wireless switch on the front edge - if it's there make sure it is in the 'on' position. The usual key combination, as far as I recall, is Fn and F8 pressed at the same time (not F8 on its own) - there should be an LED that lights up on the front edge of the laptop when the wireless adapter is on."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." i have a toshiba satellite and on the back it says the model name is satellite l500-1dt.
i am new to this website and using forums, the message that comes up on my computer is

system warning
Warning:a problem with the cooling system has been detected. please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service.

i am currently working in the alps and do not have an english speaking computer shop near by.
could any one help me and advise me what to do, i do not know much about taking a laptop apart to clean or change parts.

Answer:My Toshiba Satellite l500 cooling fan has stopped working

I would purchase a can of compressed air or use an air compressor (with a light gentle nozzle) and blow the dust out of the inside. If you have a failed cooling fan, then it will need to be repaired or replaced. That model I think is rather old, it may not be worth it to repair.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 PSLS0A-019002 with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed that I received two months ago as a gift.

Apart from disliking some the quirky and useless (to me) Windows Vista / 7 features, as the desktop is loading I get the error message "Toshiba Service Station has stopped working" which proceeds to find a solution, but apparently never finds one because this condition repeats itself every time I boot.

On another thread in these Toshiba forums, someone suggested downloading the independent utility called Toshiba Service Station and reinstalling it. I do not see such utility listed on the downloads page for my Toshiba model. Since I don't even know what the Toshiba Service Station does (unless it goes by another name - Toshiba Bulletin Board perhaps?), I have no idea what is causing the error or how to correct it.

Does anyone have a more precise solution?

Answer:Toshiba Service Station has stopped working - Satellite L500 PSLS0A

Service Station is not currently active in Australia, so you can simply uninstall it.

For some reason my space button in my keyboard has stopped working. PS/2 keyboard driver seems to be up to date. I have tried to re-install the driver without any luck. Could somebody please help me to resolve this problem?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Keyboard is not working in Satellite L500

> I have tried to re-install the driver without any luck.
Which driver? Where you can find driver for keyboard?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there. Start notebook in safe mode and test it again. If the same happen again and again I presume keyboard must be exchanged.

As far as I know there is no way to ?force? one single keyboard key to work again.

My friend's Toshiba laptop's keyboard and touchpad completely froze recently. Function keys seem to be the only thing working and the touchpad IS enabled. Hard shut down and restart did nothing. So I was able to it home and hook in an external mouse which worked. Navigating with the on-screen keyboard and external mouse, I tried to reinstall touchpad and keyboard drivers but have had problems. So again, the function keys work on the keyboard but nothing else. One other thing I found not working is the computer restart. Computer will shut down and boot up alright. If restarted it shuts down to a black screen, sounds like the fan is still running, and never boots back up. Then I need to hard shut down and restart. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 (apparently already reconditioned) running Windows 7 64-bitTouchpad and Keyboard drivers installed are:HID Keyboard device (ver. 6.1) - working properlyStandard PS/2 keyboard - says device working properly (but has disappeared from device list on occassion)HID-complaint Mouse - says device working properlySynaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad (driver ver. 11.____) - states "This device cannot start (code 10)."Tried updating/reinstalling drivers. Toshiba website has updated drivers for the touchpad (ver 13) but no keyboard drivers. I haven't been able to locate basic keyboard drivers. Not sure what else to do.Any advice would help. Thanks!

Answer:Toshiba laptop keyboard & touchpad frozen

reconditioned...personally i would stop messing around and do a factory restore, after saving all the files, factory restore will delete the C; drive and reinstall the OS from the hidden partition, effectively taking the machine back to the day it was bought. then replace all your files and folders.if its still under warranty take it back.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

To start off, I seen another thread about the TouchPad not working but this is a slightly different situation.. First off, it's a really new computer and I'm dual booting windows 10 and linux. Anyways, the TouchPad only works in windows but it randomly stops working every once in a while and I have to go into the mouse settings and re-enable it but what I thought was really weird is that when I go to the efi firmware settings, it doesn't work either.. The mouse cursor is stuck on the left side of the screen and i have to use the keyboard to navigate, even a Bluetooth mouse won't work there.. That tells me that is not a windows issue but that also tells me that is not a hardware issue either because it works in windows when i enable it in the settings.. I also have to use the bluetooth mouse for linux as it doesn't work at all.. I'm not a noob by no means, i fix pc's for a living and i usually have some kind of idea on how to fix issues but this one, i have no idea.. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Howdy guys!

I'm kind of stuck and have no idea how to fix this.

The other day I was using my laptop just fine. I turned it off for the night and came back to it the next day to start using it again. When I turned it on, the touchpad doesn't work. I restarted the computer and it still wont work.

I plugged in a USB mouse and updated the drivers. Uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled and its still not working.

When I went into the Mouse control panel in the hardware tab, Windows isn't picking up my touchpad at all. It finds only the USB mouse, but no trace for my touchpad even in the device manager.

I'm running a Toshiba satellite A305D-S6848 laptop with Windows 7 Pro 32bit with the SP1 Beta (was working fine with the beta till just the other day and have been running the beta sicne it came out), have a Synaptics Touchpad (or however you spell it).

I ran several virus scans and AVG/Avast/Kaspersky couldn't find anything JUST to be safe that it wasn't something like that.

Anyways thanks guys and hope to have some smart people figure it out

I have been in control panel and made sure the touchpad is turned on, tried it with the mouse unplugged, nada.

I installed a fresh copy of Windows & to a machine that I had gotten from someone without a hard drive.

The touchpad does not work, nor does it show up in the device manager. I am able to activate/deactivate the touchpad using the button located above the touchpad, however the touchpad itself does not work. Nor does the 'FN+F9' key, or a large number of the "fn' keys for that matter.

I checked, rechecked, and tripple checked the connections to the touchpad and everything seems to be good, I do not see why it it now being displayed in the device manager list.

Any ideas?

Also, I can able to plug in a UBS house and run off of that, but I really like being able to use the touchpad.

Okay, you most likely have viruses on your comptuer. In the recovery area of F8 menu open the command prompt againType SFC /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windowsNOTE: your windows directory maybe D: when you are in the command prompt. You can find this out if you type C: and hit enter then type dir and hit enter. If there is windows and a user folder there that is your windows partition, if not type D: and hit enter then type dir and hit enter. See if that's it.

I went to use my laptop today, and I discovered that the touchpad has stopped working. In fact, I was unable to even get past the sign-on screen, and if it weren't for the fact that I got a mouse arrow with a plug-in USB mouse, the laptop would be completely dead to me.

My son uses the laptop for Minecraft gaming, but I don't think that has anything to do with this. Even a reboot didn't change anything. I wonder if a Windows update screwed something up (again)? I'm at a loss. I'm not always where I can set up a physical mouse to use - and frankly I don't want to have to.

Any suggestions?

Answer:My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

Found the solution. When I pressed the F5 button (not Fn + F5), I got a popup that said "touchpad disabled." When I pressed it again, it said "touchpad enabled." I unplugged my USB mouse and tried again, and it's now working. What a screwed up design that allows a user to accidentally disable one's touchpad with an accidental press of the F5 key. Then you have to research the problem before figuring out the problem. Someone in the Toshiba laptop design department should be fired.

My touchpad has stopped working. The little mouse light in the top left hand corner is off. When I attach an external mouse the pointer reappears and all is fine, when I remove the mouse the pointer goes away again.

Pressing F5 does not appear to be doing anything.

It has happened a couple of times in the past but a reboot seems to fix it. However this time nothing has fixed it. I have even tried re-installing the TouchPad drivers from Toshiba's website.

Any advice would be gratefully. Thanks.

I have read a few topics for solving this kinda problem, and there was some topics, where the problem was absolutely the same, like mine, but those solutions didnt work for me, unfortunetely.  I bought ma Lenovo IdeaPad laptop a few days ago, and when I woke up today, my keyboard and touchpad didnt work. When I go to the device manager, it says that my keyboard is working fine, but have problems with my touchpad (This device cannot start. (Code 10)). was reading about updating my BIOS. Hi everyone
I recently formatted+reinstaled Windows on a "old" laptop (Acer Aspire 5620)
I installed Windows 7 (instead of Xp that it had earlier ) and after the installation was complete (first time n desktop) the touchpad and keyboard would not operate. at all
Ive tried all windows updates (in case of drivers), because there are no official drivers for 7(only xp)

The thing is that inside device manager theres nothing wrong with the touch+keyboard
(no marks, both are recognized and "operate fine")
Ive tried reboots, sometimes rarely the keyboard might enter a couple characters (with delay) and sometimes the touchpad might move the pointer a bit (with delay too)

However the keyboard works fine in bios, and both worked perfectly in windows setup (in formatting i mean)
The devices also works ok in safe mode.

Any ideas plz?

P.S. The computer before the format had ALSO win7 so its not something new with that

Hi everyone, and Happy Holidays,

I just installed windows 7 ultimate on my daughters, acer aspire 3050 laptop. It was running vista home basic before. The vista install was damaged by viruses, so I decided to upgrade her to 7. All the hardware was recognized, but for some reason the keyboard does not work, it was working fine with the virus riddled vista install. For some strange reason the windows key does bring up the start menu, but none of the other keys seem to do anything. They all work in the BIOS just fine. Also the touch pad does work, but the cursor movement is very jerky, and it was also fine in vista. I went to acer's site, they don't have any windows 7 drivers available for this model, or any vista drivers for the keyboard, I installed the vista touch pad drivers, but they did not seem to help. I also messed with the keyboard settings in control panel, but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any ideas, on what I need to do to fix this. I have been really pleased with 7 on my other computers, and would hate to have to go back to vista. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated, Thank you in advance,

Answer:keyboard and touchpad not working

The reason it won't work is because there is no Windows 7 support for your acer aspire 3050 laptop. You can see this at the Acer website, choose Notebook, Aspire then Aspire 3050 which will show you a page for your laptop. You can see there is no Windows 7 support as yet. Acer Support - Drivers & Download

Looks like you already found this out.

Let me look around and see if anyone has found a driver that will work. Nothing found that is made for your exact model so far.

Your model isn't on the list of supported laptops but that doesn't mean that a touchpad driver from another notebook won't work on your model. I would pick a model on the Windows 7 supported list, then find the touchpad and keyboard driver for that model and try it out.

Answer:Keyboard not working Toshiba

The following may be causes:

1. virus
2. You broke your keyboard (worse possibility)
3. Your keyboard setting got altered (best possibility)
4. driver doesn't work.

if it is number 2, your only option is to call the manufacture and ask them to fix it (if you have a warranty then this shouldn't be a problem) if it is #1,3, or 4 your best option would probably be to reinstall windows. (anti-virus programs sucks! It rarely successfully fixes the program and it usually slows down your computer more than a virus does). Hopefully, your computer came with a reinstall windows cd, if not, you have to buy a new one. (FYI, reinstalling windows may not work but it SHOULD work if your computer has a virus)

Hello Guys,

this is a very strange problem im experiencing on a Acer Aspire 3000

i reinstalled xp home from scratch, and the touchpad is not working, nor the keyboard, you can get some movement if you press the keyboard and the touchpad. very little though, and keys are not typing at all. but USB mouse & keyboard is fine.

This problem existed before, and this is why i ran a full reinstallation. The other thing is when i right click on my computer and go to preperties, nothing happens. so i cant even see device manager, i cant launch device manager from system in control panel either...and start+R then mmc devmgmt.msc doesnt work either...
im getting an error about the files being missing.

I have reinstalled twice with two different xp home disks, one full and the other a Dell disk

yet...when im in a cloning software interface...or linux ...the touchpad and keyboard work fine.

i tested my hard drive which passed
and i also switched the memory with known working good RAM...same problem

and on top of it...most times you cant shut the laptop down by holding in the power have to pull out the battery.

i have also installed the drivers for the touchpad from acers web site...which didnt do any justice.

im starting to think the motherboard is faulty...just wanted to get some input before i blast it with a shotgun, and post the video on you tube!!!

Answer:Keyboard touchpad not working in XP Home

i also loaded the bios default setings, it didnt help...also installed win 7 which crashes on startup
but the touchpad was working fine the whole way through setup...strange!!!

A few days ago I formatted a drive and installed Win 8.1. Also installed all the drivers. Yesterday, when closing it downloaded some updates which it installed today. Now neither keyboard nor touchpad works. I connected a wireless keyboard but it won?t work either. Wired mouse does work.

Tried to uninstall those devices and run it again, but in vain. I don?t want to use system recovery, cause I have installed some software already and wouldn?t really enjoy going through this again.

In device manager, I can see my keyboard with a following error:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Highlighted mouse shows:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Any idea how to solve this problem?

P.S. Almost forgot, i'm using notebook Acer V3-571G

Answer:Not working keyboard and touchpad after update

Make sure you have Legacy USB devices enabled in the bios, along with other associated items to the USB. Then it should work.

hey all, I have a problem with my lenovo U31-70 with windows 10. After the most recent windows 10 update, i am having the issues that the laptop takes a very long time to start up (~10 min) and that when it finally starts up, it gives two error messages about alps.exe. The touchpad and Keyboard do not work when it has finally started up. This problem was also described in However, the solution described there does not work for me, as when doing the BIOS update I receive the error that the veriosn fo the ROM file is the same as in the BIOS. I also tried reinstalling Windows 10 and reinstalling the touchpad/keyboard driver through the official Lenovo website. (I have had this problem several times before, however it went away every time by updating the BIOS through the Lenovo website. This time, this solution does not work.) Any thoughts as to how to fix this problem?

Compaq V6000 Vista Home, (32 bit) service pack 2. Computer about four years old. Motherboard replaced about four months ago because of graphic chips issue.

After a period of time / 30 min or so(?) (varies) the touchpad stops working. The blue power light continues to stay on, indicating the pad is still ?turned on? but the pad and buttons don't function. When the touchpad goes into this state, the icon on the bottom toolbar disappears. I also loose all sound, although the speaker icon remains.

When in this state the touchpad blue power light stays on and pushing the touchpad power button has no affect. (it should turn it off and illuminate an orange light)

The touch pad will also go into this state if the computer goes into the hibernate or sleep mode. One interesting thing, when in sleep or hibernate mode, you can awaken the computer by touching the touchpad surface, indicating to me that the pad is working until the computer comes ?awake.? After it wakes up, the blue blight is still on but the touchpad is inoperable.

If the touchpad is working, you can enter the sleep mode, return and the touchpad will continue to function normally.

To restore the touchpad and sound, the computer must be restarted. After that, everything works fine for a while. (time varies)

I can plug in a USB mouse to get around this issue.

I have done extensive research on Google. This issue has been happening at least since 2009. (although I didn't run across the sound issue mentioned) ... Read more

My laptop's keyboard and Touchpad suddenly stopped working a few days ago but my USB mouse is still working. It is working every time  I boot the computer but after some time I just stops. I looked at the mouse settings and the Synaptics tab was missing so I reinstall the Synaptics Touchpad Driver from HP sopport page. The driver was installed but it disappears again and the touchpad and keyboard stops working. The problem is still there so I tried to uninstall it again checking the "delete the driver permanently" or something then rebooted my PC. After rebooting I intalled the driver after the intallation was done it prompted me to reboot so I restarted the PC again but after the restart the driver is not installed. Now the keyboard is working but still stops responding after some time and the touchpad have no driver and in device manager the "PS/2 touchpad" is gone, only the USB mouse is present. My laptop is HP Pavilion TS sleekbook 14 b133tx.OS: Windows 8.1 Single Language 64 bit

Answer:Notebook Keyboard and Touchpad not working

Hi @NoGameNoLife , Thank you for your inquiry, I am happy to help! I grasp that you are having a difficulty with the keyboard and Touchpad but your mouse is still working.  When you checked the mouse setting the Synaptics tab was missing.  You downloaded the Synaptic Touchpad driver and installed but it again disappeared and the keyboard and Touchpad stop working,  You deleted the driver this time and rebooted your notebook. You again installed the driver and it prompted  you to reboot which you did, but again the driver is not installed.  The keyboard now works but after some time it quits responding. Have you scanned for viruses and malware? Would you try this step:Go to the command prompt and right click to run as administratorType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for it to complete and then restart your computer. This will scan for corrupted files and try to repair them. Here are links to assist you with some troubleshooting steps.Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting (Windows 8)Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 8) If this has not resolved the issue, I would try a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).   If you connect an external keyboard do you have the same issue, does it quit responding after awhile?  If you are still having a difficulty, I would do a full recovery back to factory. Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8) During the recove... We have a strange problem with a customer's ThinkPad T560.Neither keyboard, touchpad nor USB (keyboard, mouse, HDD) are working.USB keyboard and mouse are not getting any power, USB harddrive gets power but is not recognized (nothing happens in Windows).  I have tried the various startup alternatives such as safe mode etc - same problem. The only thing that IS working, are the media keys on the internal keyboard. It responds to Open Explorer, switch apps, brightness and wireless switch... but nothing else. I have tried a system restore to a previous point - which works until a restart, then it's the same thing. Running out of restore points. I am getting a bit frustrated with this - are there any solutions to this problem? I have also tried upgrading to Windows 10 (assistive upgrade) but it fails (of course...). I saw someone mentioning uninstalling McAfee, but since I do not have McAfee installed - nor can I even operate the computer... I'm out of options. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks! /Forsberg

This problem is with my husband's IBM ThinkPad T43. This was a work computer but the company closed down & let him keep his computer (minus all the software disks). This problem I'm experiencing happened because of my stupidity. I was cleaning up the programs loading in the Startup Menu and unchecked several that appeared to be unneeded items. I also removed a file (which is now in the Recycle Bin because our new Kaspersky security program listed it as a keylogger. Now when I reboot, the keyboard & touchpad or mouse won't work when I reach the Control Alt Delete area to move forward into Windows. If I could get in, and use the keyboard, I would just put everything back the way it was, but I've spent days looking on the internet for a way to fix this and have been totally unsuccessful in finding anything that addresses my specific problem.

Please help!

Thank you,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
If your Z500 came with a Synaptics Touchpad, can you try to:
1. Go to the Control Panel (large icon view) then > click Mouse > Device Settings tab > Settings
2. Under the Synaptics Settings, go to Pointing > Sensitivity > Palmcheck and set the palm sensitivity to minimum and test the game.

My keyboard and touchpad suddenly stopped working on my Levnovo Z570. I have restarted several times  and each time, an error pops up that says "01011001 keyboard stuck key" and then the system boots normally. However, I cannot use my keyboard or touchpad. I have checked on the drivers in the device manager and it seems that they don't show up there. Under Mouse and other pointers, my HDI Compatble USB mouse shows up (and stiil works, thank goodness) but there is no device listed for my touchpad. Under keyboards, all that shows up is "PS/2 Keyboard" and my regular keyboard device is missing. If anyone can help
I have a toshiba Satellite M50-A-11p laptop (windows 8.1) that I brought from John Lewis
I tend to not shut down my laptop and leave it on sleep mode.
All of a sudden once the laptop wakes up when I open it non of the keyboard functions or touchpad works. I press and hold the start button to switch off and switch back on but again I cannot type or move the cursor.
I used a usb mouse which the laptop recongised and used the online keyboard to login in. After that the laptop froze and gave me the light blue screen of death message. Again I switch the laptop off and back on and repeated the login process of using the usb mouse and online keyboard.
I decided to refresh the laptop (with not affecting the files) and the keyboard and touchpad worked till it automatically when into sleep mode after and I had the same problem the touchpad on the keyboard and the keyboard are not working again.
I decided to refresh the laptop completely affecting what is on the laptop and again everything is working till it was asking for updates then once the updates were complete nothing on the keyboard were working again
I don't know whats wrong with it

Answer:The keyboard and the TouchPad stopped working!

Hi, Rabbitvix
I haven't experienced this issue, but the fact that the keyboard works in BIOS but not in the OS indicates a software issue, not hardware. I would recommend booting the machine in Safe Mode to see if this helps. If the TouchPad and the keyboard resume functioning in Safe Mode, then we may be able to solve this issue by removing a driver.
To boot into Safe Mode in Windows Vista:

Start the computer from cold boot.
When the splash screen appears (says "Lenovo) being tapping F8 repeatedly.
Continue tapping F8 until a menu appears.
Select Safe Mode.
Hit Enter.
The computer should now boot to Safe Mode.

Also, one final question: If you plug in an external mouse, does this function well, or does it experience problems as well?
Best of luck,

Whenever I flip the screen back to use the P40 as a tablet and then when I flip it back to laptop mode, sometimes the keyboard and mouse will not respond. It's as if the computer doesn't notice that the screen is in laptop mode and does not reactivate the keyboad and touchpad. I have to reset the laptop multiple times or close the lid and open it up again several times to get them to work again. Whenever I restart the computer the keyboard lights will turn on during startup but turn back off whenever I get to the sign in screen. I have found no pattern that consistently works to reactivate the keyboard/touchpad. I am also having an issue that when the computer is in tablet mode, it will not re-orient the screen when I change positions (like from landscape to portrait orientation). I think these issues might be something related to the sensors on  the computer not working properly... Anyone else having this problem? Any known solutions? Thanks for any help. Walter

Hi everyone. Yesterday, my Asus Q550L laptop completed a Win 10 auto update. I restarted my laptop as instructed and when my system rebooted, the keyboard and touchpad would not respond. It wouldn't let me login to Win 10 and even seemed like it was not responding while Windows was booting up. I finally was able to gain access my using the onscreen keyboard via touchscreen. I use an external Microsoft mouse, and that still seems to work okay. I looked in the device manager and both my touchpad and keyboard drivers have exclamation marks on them. I tried updating the driver, but it said they were the newest/best available. I tried deleting the driver and letting windows rediscover them, but got the same result. I refuse to believe the the keyboard and touchpad took a dump at the exact same time, so this has to be related to Windows 10 right? Any help/advice is welcome and thanks in advance!

Uninstalling Asus Smart Gesture then installing the new one provided by Ivan FR (Google search: asus windows 10 ivan fr) fixed it, but then I noticed my audio driver has an error now, I restarted and all said errors were back. ?
Redoing the method doesn't work.
Guess we'll have to wait for a fix from MS itself
Btw, my lappy's Asus too, X55LN.

Hi everyone! I have a Toshiba Satellite M305 that I upgraded from Vista to 7. I performed the Upgrade but had issues immediately (black screen, constant freezing)... so I backed up everything and did a clean Windows 7 install.

Now I have a fresh install. Worked fine, downloaded updates, and now the keyboard any touchpad will not work. USB keyboard & mice work fine though.

Under device manager, it shows the keyboard as PS2, but no errors. For the touchpad it says "PS2 Mouse" (but it's a touchpad), and error code 10.

I noticed that if I uninstall the "mouse" and reboot, the touchpad will work until next reboot.

Next, I downloaded new Synaptic drivers and even tried the Toshiba driver pack. Didn't work... the uninstall trick doesn't work now either.

I'm not sure what's going on. Any ideas? I am leaning on a bad update from Windows update. I have searched Google and found numerous similar problems but cannot seem to get this resolved.

Thanks for any help! I can provide any more info that may be needed.

Answer:Windows 7 Touchpad & Keyboard not working

Since the install is probably still pretty clean, maybe you could try reinstalling again (I know, I know...) and installing your mouse drivers right off the bat from the Toshiba Website. Of course, be sure it's the right version of the driver, you know x86/x64, and for Vista/7.

This is my best guess, but if you have more pertinent info, maybe we can work something out.

I have a Toshiba C855D laptop that I am trying to reinstall Windows 7 from a CD on because I recently got I a CBT Blocker encrypt virus on it. All my files are backed up so I'm just trying to reinstall Windows 7 on it to start from scratch but I have a very peculiar problem. When I start up the computer my keyboard does not work so that I cannot even put in my password. But by experimenting I discovered something: I have a USB mouse hooked up to it and with the mouse I put the computer on hybernate and when I take it out of hybernate then the keyboard works fine (quick note here: when the keyboard is working the light on the "number lock" key is on and when the keyboard is not working the light is off). So here is my problem: when I restart the computer to reboot it from disc (by pressing F12 key) the menu comes up for me to reinstall Windows 7 but I cannot navigate the menu because the keyboard does not work (the light I mentioned before turns off on restart) and the USB mouse does not work either because apparently it is disabled for a Windows 7 reinstall from disk. Is it that I need a new keyboard but if so then why does it work fine when I bring it back from hybernate? Can someone please help me with this?

Answer:Toshiba C855D Keyboard not working

The quick solution might be a usb keyboard. otherwise...

When you initially boot up you should get a bios screen that says press F2 for setup. Do so, for two reasons: to find out if the kb is working in DOS mode, and then when you are in the bios go to the options tab and select ~load default options~. then Accept changes and let it reboot.

The usb mouse should have been working in WinRE.

Anybody have any idea how I might troubleshoot or fix this issue?

All seems to work using a USB keyboard. Have removed laptop keyboard but can find no obvious area of damage/ liquid ingress. Wondered if one key was stuck through the spillage and tried to tap all of them multiple times...very occasionally could get a number to appear in notepad totally unrelated to the key pressed but normally zero response. Happy to try and fit a new keyboard (if available) but just wondered if I might be missing something. Thanks.

Hello allThe keyboard on my new Toshiba laptop stopped working recently, after just a couple of weeks' use. Just no reacting to anything. I bought it in uk, as no language barrier etc, but it is currently abroad and very difficult to return it to GB where I bought it, though I realise that that might be my only option. Thought I'd ask here first if anyone knows any steps I can take to resolve the keyboard problem. I have been using it with a new wireless keyboard, which is not satisfactory in the long-term, until I can find a permanent solution. Any replies gratefully received. For some reason when ever I startup my computer no matter if I go in to the BIOS or try to go to windows my keyboard and mouse freeze after about 2 secs. I cant do anything but do a hard shut down and restart but still will freeze. One time I was able to get the computer up and running to the windows vista desktop and my mouse and keyboard were working. So I know it is not them that is bad. I am thinking that it is a BIO issue since even if I take my hard drive out and start up the computer all I am able to do is hit F2 and if Im fast enough F9 but I can not hit yes to load default before my keyboard is non responsive. I have updated my BIOS to 1.50 and get the BSOD stating "The Bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant."

I don't believe that this was a bios issue in the first place, i think it is/was one of your start up programs that was causing this issue, what you needed to do was to disable all of your start up programs ( check link on how to do this) and re-enable them one by one restarting your machine each time untill you find the problematic start up program that is causing the lock up. I would advise rolling back the bios flash that you did to the version it was at before, then try the startup fix !!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4777 laptop. The keyboard is not working correctly. It is not registering every letter I type. It's almost as if I'm not actually pushing all the keys down everytime, but I am. I will have to stop mid-word and push the letter (or space) that I am trying to type a couple of times and it will finally register. I went to "Control Panel... Keyboard" but nothing in there seems to fix my situation. It makes it extremely difficult to type e-mails, Word documents, ANYTHING! It slows down the process because I am constantly having to backspace and fix whatever didn't register. I don't know what to do and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Answer:Toshiba keyboard not working everytime

There are no specific keys that won't work. It's rather random. I will be typing and keys that I hit just won't register. I hear and feel them click... I know they are being hit, they just won't show up (including space bar too).

I really don't know anything about taking apart a laptop to get the keyboard out... I will have to see if a friend does.

Also... it's just random when it does it... for example, I haven't had one problem right now typing this reply, but earlier today, when I started the original thread it was so bad that I literally couldn't get two words typed without having to hit "backspace" and retype them.

Okay, while searching for the internet, I noticed another individual had a similar issue; but I hope that with my information, you could somewhat point me in the right direction. When I registered, I put in all I could find to help aid anyone who might be able to help.

Anyways, onto the issue. A few months back I, unfortunately tripped over my power cord and spilled an entire glass of wine on my poor laptop. Luckily, my spouse was able to dry it out relatively well, and it booted up perfectly fine. The only exception was, my keyboard didn't really work, and my touchpad mouse doesn't work at all.

I bought a usb wireless keyboard and mouse and recently bought a new keyboard. She installed it, and lo and behold, a few keys still didn't work. Fast forward to today. Without thinking, I reached over and used a few buttons before realizing that a few that weren't working -were-.

Testing it out further, I realized that ALL the keys were functioning! HUZZAH!

Then I shift over further onto the sofa, and the it stopped working again. Annoyed, I had my spouse reopen the laptop to check it's connection, thinking that maybe it wasn't plugged in fully. Alas, it was.

So, I know the keyboard CAN work. I just want to know what might be the causes towards it switching on, so to speak, and switching off. The fact that my touch-pad won't work doesn't bother me, as I do have the wireless mouse (though a rough estimate would be appreciated towards the cost of getting... Read more

Don't mean to be a bother about this, but is there any way that I could get an answer?

I am unable to use my laptop's touchpad and keyboard. Even my mouse is operational only when the windows is loaded. Meaning, during the booting time when i wish to change the booting option, at that time i am unable to use even my mouse. Which otherwise is the only outside device used via usb port. Earlier there was issue of BIOS application, which was corrupted, which not is visible when i just boot, meaning thereby, the button namely f1 or f8 is operation at the time of booting, but unable to do any change in the booting options which are visible when i just boot my laptop. Though with the help of USB i am able to work on my externally attached keyboard. What should be done to cure this issue this is persistently bothering me for last 15 days. I am unable to make my laptop's touchpad and keyboard operational. 1 thing more only Tab is operational and opening and closing bracket keys work that is it. And as i said now only f1 or f8 works during the booting, nothing else. Please get me out of this trouble. I've trying for many days. But unable to get rid of this issue.

I installed a USB Motorola Modem so that I can use my Nextel to connect to the internet. Everything was fine, until I rebooted. Once I reboot the touchpad and keyboard didn't work. This was even in safemode and at the login screen. I then plugged in a USB mouse and keyboard and uninstalled the Modem. Still no workie. When I go into Device Manger have lots of errors. When I go into update the drivers it states its the best driver but (code 37). Also the the keyboard and touchpad isn't listed in device manager either. I even went back and attempted to restore and rollback before I installed the USB modem and it always fails. Even going 5 days back. After doing some searching someone stated it was related to the regestry. Sadly I would just wipe it out and start over but its a computer from Fry's and no Vista disk came with it.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

I have a just over one year old (~14 months) Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Win 8.1 (no touch) and of course it's out of warranty. The mouse simply stopped working, no cursor. I was able to use the touchpad but then that quit too in quick order.
I spent hours searching here and the interweb looking for possible fixes, so far no luck.
The worst of the issue is now I can't get past the splash screen to the login screen to access the repair/restore functions in Windows.
How do I access these when I can't even login to the computer?

Answer:Mouse stopped working, then touchpad, then keyboard

I called Dell and they want almost $300 to send it back so they can 'look at it'!
Any thoughts or suggestions to solve this issue?

Hey there,

A friend was recently the victim of one of the 'Windows Service' scams and gave me his laptop to check they hadn't installed any malware on it. Thankfully they hadn't, but in the process of looking over his computer, I discovered he hadn't installed any Windows updates in the last 3 years. I've since installed all of these (about 200 files and two service packs) but now I have a slight issue in that neither the keyboard nor the trackpad works (at all). They were both working fine before the update, but now the computer doesn't even register them as input.

I've been trying to figure out why they're not working. I've plugged in a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and that works fine. For now, I'm remote desktop controlling the laptop via my iPad so that my own PC is free to use. I think it's a driver problem, but I just can't seem to figure out how to get it to work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Will post TSG Sysinfo in next post:

Yesterday out of the blue the screen on my Yoga 700 went blank and I had to hard-reboot it when it didn't respond to anything. After that the keyboard, Touchpad and the charging doesn't work. External keyboards and mice work fine but not the inbuild ones. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Trying to fix a HP Pavillion dv9000 for a friend. After a windows update the keyboard/touchpad won't work at the login screen.
Safe mode does not work either. The keyboard does work in the Bios and if I boot a live CD they both work as well. A USB mouse/keyboard
doesn't work either. Also, there are no system restore points saved. No DVD either. Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Do the other USB devices work?

Ensure that all the drivers are the latest version, especially for the chipset (motherboard) driver and the update for BIOS.

In addition, if any USB hub is used, please bypass it and connect the driver directly. If any un-used USB device is connected, please also unplug it.

You may also reinstall USB controllers as below:

Reinstall USB controllers
Note: If you are using a USB mouse, please follow the "Use the Keyboard" steps to reinstall USB controllers. Windows Vista will reinstall all controllers automatically after restarting
your computer.

Use the Mouse
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1). Click "Start", type "Device Manager" (without the quote) in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.
2). In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
3). Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows Vista will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Use the Keyboard
First, please disconnect all USB devices. Then, go through the following steps:

1). Press "Ctrl + Esc" to open the Sta... Read more

Hi! I have an Ideapad Z560. All of a sudden both keyboard and Synaptic touchpad stopped working. I restored the laptop to the original image and updated all drivers from Lenovo first and from Synaptic later; then I replaced the keyboard with a spare I had, then I opened the laptop and reattached all cables to make sure there are no loose cables.Nothing worked. What's interesting is that both the touchpad and keyboard report themselves as attached to PS/2 port.Is it normal? What else can I do? What else can cause the issue?I'd like to replace the touchpad but I cannot find the part anywhere. Is it available from Lenovo? Are there any generic ones? I've been searching using "Ideapad Z560 touchpad for sale" and "Synaptic touchpad for sale". Many thanks in advance,

Answer:Acer-E1 572G Touchpad & Keyboard not working!

Welcome to the forums, go to control panel, uninstall "Launch Manager" in Programs, download from here and re-install it:
Download Drivers and Manuals | Acer Official Site
Try different drivers for synaptics, for example, Acer Aspire E1-572 Synaptics Touchpad Driver for Windows 8.1 64-bit Drivers download - Synaptics Software Update
If you find ETD Ware in Programs, right click and uninstall it, that's your Elantech but I couldn't see it in your Device manager.

I have had this yoga 2 for 5 months with all well. Suddenly the keyboard and touchpad seem to have been disabled (also, the display does not re-align itself when I roate the device). - I have not updated the software / drivers / BIOS at any time since purchase. I suspect there's a simple solution, but I cannot find it. Please help!
