My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

Question: My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

I recently put in an upgrade to my ram from 512 mb to 768 total Ram. I went to turn it on and I saw a spark where the P1 is at, and now the screen will not turn on, but my hard drive still turns on or runs? Did I short circuit my motherboard? could it be my video graphics card? any help on getting it back to working condition? thanks

Preferred Solution: My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

Make sure you unplug mains lead after you shutdown. Remove the upgrade ram and try starting again. when you say "where the P1 is at" do you mean the power connector to the Mainboard?.

Could be a few things but i suspect you have blown a ram module or the PSU.

When I turn of my computer for the nigth it starts by itself later on. Sometimes right after I turn it off, sometimes when I have been asleep for some hours. It is quite annoying to wake up findin my computer on, when I know I turned it off before I went to bed.I use windows XP home. I have resently formatted. I have had this problem before and after the format. I have run several viruscans, without finding any virus. My computer is connected to the internet on a dsl-line. I have never experienced a boot when my computer is disconnected physically from the internet. I suppose that might give you a clue to why my computer turns itself back on.I will apreciate any help you can offer.Aznagroth

Answer:Computer starts by itself after I turn it OFF

I would suspect from what you say that your system is set to wake on lan or wake on modem/token ring.this would explain why it doesn't happen when you are i recall it is a setting in the bios, your motherboard manual should explain how to turn off these items. One other possisbility (remote chance) is that your system is not shutting down correctly and windowsXP is rebooting as a consequence. to check, goto start/control panel/power options/advancednear the bottom are :- When i press the power button on my computer.... That should be set as SHUT DOWN:- When i press the sleep button on my computer.... That should be set as STAND BY.hope this helpsgood luck

Hello TechSpot! Very helpful forums you have here so I thought I'd join and see if anyone could help me out, as well as help out others while I'm here. Anyways, I'm writing this As I drive over to a friends house who's computer won't display anything on the monitor when he starts it. Everything is new. I will check to see if it even beeps but he says it does. Any ideas to get me started? He has tried different monitors and video cards and still no luck.

Answer:Monitor won't turn on when computer starts

might just be a dodgy VGA/HTMI cable or power cable plugged in at the wall, try the screen on another computer or laptop

you have to keep pressing the button and sometimes can't get it on without wigging boards, maybe. Kind of hard to describe since I'm describing it second hand.

But when it's hot it turns on, otherwise when it's cold it seems like it's on but nothing appears on the screen either with a video card or with on-the-motherboard video. I tested the memory and it tested good.

I think it's a power supply or maybe the motherboard?

Answer:Computer only starts when hot, otherwise it is a pain to turn on, . . .

Check the pw switch front panel headers connection on the motherboard. See if the computer works by jumping the green and black power supply cables with a paperclip

I have this problem, when I try to turn my computer on it won't reach Post. The screen just stays black, and the fans spins intermittently. It'll spin for a while, then stop, then spin for a while, then stop, and keeps repeating that pattern.

Once, I got it to reach the... Compaq screen. But only once so far.

Last time this happened, I unplugged the power supply, and the connector pins, and waited a few hours, then plugged everything in and tried again. I'm still trying that, but it hasn't worked yet. But based on those symptoms and that treatment, what problem does my computer have?

Answer:When I try to turn my computer on, it never starts up in full.

I just built my first PC and put it together, I believe everything is connected correctly as I followed the manuals.

The computer turns on, all fans are going, powersupply, graphics card, optical drive, hard drive, they are all running. I connected my monitor to with the blue monitor cables but the monitor light just keeps blinking meaning its in stand-by mode. I have a usb keuyboard connected, the keyboard was turned on for a bit because the keys light up, then when i pressed keys nothing happened on the monitor. Now the keyboard doesnt go on.

I also dont have anything plugged into the back of my graphics card, I dont know what those two red connectors do.

Any ideas?

built my computer over 4 years ago, woke up one day and my computer would only turn on for a couple seconds before shutting down. stripped it down to:

MoBo: Soyo Dragon Plus 2 (ATX, 478 socket)
PSU: 350w w/ X-dreamer case
CPU: 2.6Ghz Intel P4

still had same problem. replaced PSU w/ 400w, same problem, replaced CPU w/ 2.4Ghz P4, same problem. thought it was a bad CPU because when start it up w/o the 4 pin connecter plugged into the motherboard, it runs the fans w/o powering down.

what am i missing?

appreciate your time.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Providing you used fresh thermal paste and the heatsink is properly attached, I suspect a faulty cpu.

I have a laptop running Windows XP. When I first turn on the computer my X-Cleaner program automatically starts loading and running. This is a nuisance to me as I would rather run it when I am ready to turn off my computer. I have read that if I go to the start up folder that is the place to remove programs that run automatically at start up. The problem is the program is not there. I also read that I need to go to the registry if I don't find it in start up. I don't know how to go to the registry and then how to do whatever I need to in order to change this from occurring. If anyone knows how, can you please let me know?

Thank you,

Go to Start > Run > type "msconfig". Go to the "Startup" tab, and see if the program is there. If it is, uncheck it and apply!

So ive had a Lenovo notebook G50-45 for about 2 years now. Over those 2 years, ive had little to no problems with it. 2 days ago at about 3 in the morning, while I was sleeping, the CPU fan starting blowing like a jet engine. I woke up from the noise and heard that it was coming from the computer. I lift the lid of the laptop, but the screen doesn't turn on. No amount of pressing the power button, moving the mouse, or pressing keys would turn the display on. So, i hold the power button to restart, and it restarts. When i logged in, everything seemed ok. No blasting CPU fan, display was on, and the computer was at normal speeds. I even ran a couple of virus scans. Nothing detected. This exact thing happens on the next night. That's when i came here. Any ideas on what the issue is an how i should fix it? Thank you!

Answer:CPU fan starts up randomly in the middle of the night and not able to turn on the computer

Look in the event log to see what is going on at the time it starts up.

Answer:my hp g6 bios update starts everytime i turn on my computer

You probably need to replace the CMOS battery with a new one. This is NOT the main battery, it's a little round, silver-coloured battery attached to the motherboard inside your laptop.

My computer is an e-machines and is about a year old and for the past maybe 6 months ill turn it on and all the fans start up but the processor fan stops and then it wont boot up. Normally i just keep turning it on and off and it will eventually rev up really high and then slow down and then be fine adn work ok. Now its not doing anything, Just over and over turns on and then turns off while both other fans stay running. Power supply seems to be working properly. Doesnt make any noise and i have power everywhere. Any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Processor fan starts but stops and computer wont turn on

Sounds like the CPU fan is dead. Replace it. In my area a new CPU fan is $20-30.

Answer:When I Turn My Computer On Mozilla Starts With Easyev Advert

Hello Lyall and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The first thing we need to do is update the operating system on this computer.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.a site and install Service Pack 1a. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates but do not install SP2 at this time. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee. After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

Have you tried the Lask Known Good Configuration option?

I think it might be a Mozillla issue (damaged), calling for the uninstall/reinstall routine.

Had a quick question, I got a computer that will start up but the screen wont come on. Im thinking that the light for the screen might have broke, from dropping the computer. Is there anyway to fix it? if so how can I do this and how much will it cost, or would I be better off sending it to a local computer shop?

Answer:Computer starts, screen won't come on

Is this a laptop? Its possible the screen is broke. Or you may have broken something else, Either way you will need to have it service. Your best bet would be to have a local computer shop look at it and give you a price. Then you can decide if its worth fixing. Or just replacing. It really depends on what was damage after you dropped it.

I am sure someone here my be able to tell you the cost if you want to go that route.

Vista - Screen/Monitor Problem

I just upgraded to vista about 3 weeks ago, and everything was working fine. I shut my computer off a couple nights ago and when i went to turn it on it went through the regular start-up, and Welcome screen, and then went black. I had an error message that popped up (i will turn the computer on to check what it said and will post it) but everything behind the message was still black.

When i turn the computer on in safe mode the screen works fine. Is there a way for me to see what the problem is in safe mode? I backed up everything, but my recovery disk 1 isn't working (i dont now if it is the computer or the disk, so before i buy new disks i want to see if there is anything that could be done to fix it).

Does anyone recognize this problem? Please Help!

Answer:Computer Starts - Screen Black

You can check your drivers in safe mode.... if you see an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle, you'll know that's a problem.

When i turn on my computer, it just goes to a black screen, no sign of the bio's screen or windows xp screen. No flickering or anything, no indication its connected except for the fact when i unplug the monitor the screen saying there is no cable on the monitor shows up. i tried a different monitor on it, same thing happens. It is connected to the on-board graphics card. I tried removing the hard drive to see if that was the problem, no luck. Shouldn't it at least show the bios screen? This problem only started a few days ago.

My computer started up to a black screen, and after a few seconds my monitor went to sleep. No cursor, nothing. I had do a hard reboot to get it to work properly. Yesterday, it happened twice. I hit Google to see what I could find but nothing worked. Here's what I found:

1. Some threads suggested it could be a problem with the video card or some other driver. My video card driver is up to date, my most recent driver installation was my printer, however, that was done over a week ago, and the black screen problem didn't occur then.

2. Startup programs, I checked to see if it might be something attempting to load, but it was just the update service for my printer, and the digital imaging software for my printer(both disabled, as of right now). It was neither of these as the problem occurred again.

3. I ran malware bytes and it came back clean, no malware detected. Running Norton to see if it could find anything but I highly doubt it.

The black screen only happens some of the time. When I make it to the login screen, my machine runs normally, nothing strange occurs, I can use my machine as if there isn't a problem.

My monitor is fairly new, closer to a year old.

I ran chkdsk /f and it was completed, no errors or interruptions.

I really don't want to replace my hard drive, I have a back up solution in place so I'm not worried about my files. My real problem is, if I have to re-install windows I need a new CD key for Windows 7... Read more

Answer:Computer Sometimes Starts Up with A Black Screen

Hello and welcome Annabelle looks like a similar problem I had a while ago with my Sandy Bridge build - tried all the usual stuff like you have and in the end it was solved by just reseating the GPU card.

Try that first along with most of the major cables power and board connectors and have a good general clean out inside the case.
Edit: Don't forget the static electricity rules - ground yourself on the case while it is plugged in before diving inside the case and then unplug the thing before you dos so.

The chkdsk (you could try the /r switch with that) I see you have run but try this as well if you haven't already

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs

then these if necessary
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

The Norton I am not a fan off so I'd leave that and as for the 7 key it really is worth a phone call to Microsoft and explain your predicament and as a general rule they are normally happy to let you use the key again.

windows starts and then the screen slowly goes black but if you tilt the computer you can still see very faint images

Answer:computer starts and then the screen goes black

Whenever you can move or vibrate a computer to change what happens it is a hardware fault. Possibly a screen fault, or backlight. A connection fault is always possible but the effects are usually quite sudden.EDIT:Another thought. It could simply be that tilting enables you to see something that is very dim rather than it being an intermittent fault (which is what I had in mind above). In which case there are quite a lot of possibilities for a dim screen, mostly along the lines suggested. Go to BIOS then watch the screen for a while and see if it fades there. If so it is definitely a hardware fault - fairly certain anyhow.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Well for the past month my computer has been freezing or my mouse froze requiring a reboot, but when I started it up again the screen would go black and not do anything then I would turn it off and turn it back on and it would start up normally.

A couple days ago I had to reformat my computer cause I kept getting a computer crash leading to a blue screen.

Just today my computer froze when I started up a game, then I turned off my computer and again the booting up with black screen happens again but this time, it will not start up at all even after several times turning off and trying to turn back on.

Idk if this helps but my keyboard lights quickly flash then they go off and my keyboard dont work.

Anymore info you might need just ask. I would like to know whats wrong.

I have just recently bought a computer that someone else made. He told me that the only thing the computer needed was memory. Well I bought the correct memory from, stuck it in there, and when I start it up nothing appears on-screen. The motherboard is a Biostar M7VIG 400 and the memory is DDR PC3200 unbuffered, non-ECC. When I hit the power button, I hear the Hard drive start but that is it. In order for me to turn the computer off I have to hit the power switch on the power supply. If anyone knows how this can be fixed it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me and ask if you need anymore information. Thanks.

Answer:Computer starts up, but nothing appears on-screen.

The memory said was compatible with my mobo was PC2700 not PC3200. Even though the lower density (256MB and 512MB) are PC3200 the 1 GB is PC2700. The man said that the only memory that will work with the mobo is PC3200 unbuffered, non-ECC, and CL3. I found that the memory gave me was PC2700, unbuffered, non-ECC and CL2.5. Will this have any effect?

I restart my computer and it will sit at the hp screen and stay their i will restart a bunch of times and finally will boot up all is good if i leave it on but as soon as i reboot same thing happens again some times i need to leave it unplugged and with the battery out for an hour before it will work

any thoughts

Answer:When computer starts sits on hp screen and does nothing

try removing a stick of RAM, sounds like something is delaying the boot. not sure if the battery could tie into this theory but it may be drained. have you tried leaving the battery out and keeping the computer plugged in? this will tell you if it's a problem with the battery or not.

I tried removing the battery without any luck hoping it would reset any bios, I tried removing the ram, no luck. Any ideas on what is wrong with it?

Hia there,

I have a friend who is using windows xp.When they boot the computer up.They encounter a black screen with some wording. He tells me that the wording is to do with ms dos. Then the screen goes black, with just the cusor showing in the top hand left corner.
I have an idea of what the problem is,and think that someone has gone into his settings and asked the machine to boot up in dos.
Can anyone tell if i am right.Or if there is another solution to this problem.
Thankyou for your help.

Answer:Computer Starts Up In MS Dos Then Just Black Screen

First thing to try is disconnect all peripherals (especially printers with card readers), ensure no disks are in the drives and try booting. Next -
-Disconnect all peripherals and mains power
-Press & hold power button for 15 sec
-Reconnect mains power only, power up

If that too fails, boot to BIOS, reset defaults, and try booting again.

I was browsing the web when suddenly my pc froze. There were some discolored pixels and few weird lines. Then the os crashed.
After it crashed I tried restating but the screen just stayed blank.
I noticed that cpu fan seems to be spinning slower than usual.

I tested the monitor and psu on my other pc, both checks out. I tried with my old gpu and still no luck.

Not sure what to do next.

HP Envy 34" All in One, model 1039801
Windows 10
2tb 5400 RPM SATA and 128 SSD
16 gig Memory
No optical drive
4x USB 3.0, 3x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI out, 1x Combination Microphone / Headphone Jack, 1x Media Card Reader

I woke up yesterday and my 6 month old computer boots to a blank, black screen. No windows logo at startup. I can hear the fan whirring when I start, but then nothing else. I know I can't fix permanently, this but I am desperately hoping I can get it functional enough to pull information off of the 2tb drive. Methods I've already tried to fix this:

shutting down, unplugging for hours, then plugging back in
hitting escape repeatedly while booting
hitting F10, F5 repeatedly while booting
restarting, holding down power button then rebooting
holding down Windows+B while booting
16 short beeps while using the Windows+B method-nothing else worked

HP has agreed to fully refund my purchase, but I cannot open the PC without voiding the warranty (and losing the $2,000 refund). Is there any way to connect to a functional computer long enough to pull off some information? Is there a method I haven't tried? Is a miracle possible?

Thanks in advance!

I just put together a machine. Asus K8V-X SE motherboard, AMD 2800 64bit CPU, ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb, WD 80gb SATA HDD, New Acer AL1912 LCD monitor.

I just installed the OS and when it went to the welcome screen it re-boots. The monitor says "Input not supported" but it works fine on my other machines. Is there a setting in my new bios or something that is disabling the monitor or something like that?

Someone please help.

If this is the wrong forum to post this info can someone let me know what forum is the correct one. Thanks in advance.

I got a couple of problems with my XP computer..

I bought Zone Alarm Xtreme security couple of months ago, since then every time I do a scan, the computer shuts down!!

After a conversation with Zone Alarm, the suggested I disable all Services except for Windows and Zone Alarm ones. Did a scan -> same problem! + Boot.ini error comes up.

Yesterday, I decided to try out Norton 360. Did a scan, the screen went yellow.
I rebooted the computer - starts fine, only nothing on the screen (black).
I hooked up the screen to another PC, and it works fine.

Is this a graphics card issue? or something to do with the Boot.ini file being corrupted?

Would a gfx card reset solve the problem?
Appreciate your help.

Answer:Computer starts, screen won't + antivirus issues

Hi, hmmm seems youve got a few probs there, ok well We will 1st try to rebuild that Missing file,

Ok Have you got your XP install disc??

If so: Pop it in and boot from the disc, perss any key when prompted.
From there you should be able to Get access to the RECOVERY CONSOLE, By pressing R i think.....

Then type this command: bootcfg /rebuild

Ok Im presuming you dont have multiple Antivirus programs installed??
As you should only have ONE as they will more than likley Conflict with one another if you have two or More......

Choose one Antivirus and uninstall the rest.

Now Download, install and update; MalwareBytes
Restart your Comp, Do a quick scan and post the Log here.

Good luck.

So whenever I turn on my computer it starts with a pink screen and will not change. Sometimes after waiting about 30-45 minutes it will show the Windows screen and I'm able to get to the desktop where I can open a browser, but almost immediately it minimizes and nothing can be done to maximize it. I can't open anything without it sticking on minimize. There are no icons on my desktop anymore and I don't have a bar at the bottom with options for volume etc The computer is 8 months old and worked fine until it was unplugged and not in use for about a month. Now ever since starting it up again it's doing this.

Good day to you all and i thank you for taking time to look at my dilemma . I am not sure whether this qualifies as a crash problem as i have never encountered a BSOD but i suspect that it is the closet sign to it. Well i have an hp pavilion g7 1251si laptop with i5-2430M 4Gb RAM 64bit OS win 7 Prem AMD Radeon HD 6470M.............. it runs pretty smoothly except for one rather daunting problem , the screen suddenly starts ghosting out of nowhere. I have had some experience with computers but this problem is one i have never heard of ............ there is no BSOD or error message after i switch off the laptop off and on again ............. and it does not do this ghosting consistently or after a specific time or task . So i can be doing something as simple as document editing and it happens. It has been more than 3 months since it last occurred and it has only happened about 5 times in the year since i purchased this laptop. Its still under warranty but i cannot go and claim it if i cannot specifically show them the problem and regardless am not comfortable with backing up and transferring all my files all over again. I am worried that this is an issue that if not dealt with could have future repercussions so any assistance is greatly appreciated. As as last resort i try to randomly press keys such as caps and num lock when this happens but to no avail. The only responsive button seems to be the power button.I have uploaded a photo of the laptop ghosting to help clear thing... Read more

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

Answer:Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk.

My PC was given to me as a gift, but I was given it used from the previous owner and later found out it was refurbished. It is a Gateway NV53A. I have always had issues with BSOD's and Windows errors, and most of them either driver or memory related. I fixed and updated all drivers, but never did anything about memory except maybe some tests and they all came out fine. 3 days ago, I was using my PC just browsing a Web page and suddenly the screen went black. I thought it was the lcd, but I closed the lid to see if it would go into standby mode and it just stood there powered on and frozen... The only way it would react was if I manually turned it off holding power button. Sometimes it does boot up, sometimes it gets farther than others. What I mean is, sometimes it gets past the Gateway logo and crashes there, sometimes it boots up to to the home screen, and sometimes it doesn't even boot... How far it gets depends on how long the PC has been turned off. Odd I know... Anyways, I found out my motherboard requires ram with 1066mhz fsb whereas the current ram sticks it has installed are 800mhz.... I was told new ram with 1066mhz would fix my issues and allow my PC tu boot and run fine as it always did, but I just wanted to be sure that's my Issue, and I also wanted to know how come the computer ran fine (with the exception of BSOD's and some errors occurring every now and then) before and now suddenly I'm screwed. I'm currently using two 2GB DDR3 Ram memory sticks. The brand an... Read more

Answer:Computer starts, boots up and freezes at black screen

There is no issue in running slower (800mhz) RAM in a system that can run the faster (1066mhz) RAM. This, alone, will not cause this kind of problem. You got bad advice.

Do you know if this was the original RAM that came with the laptop? (Not very important but good info if you know)

It is possible that the RAM is defective, or the wrong specs for that laptop, or the two sticks have mis-matched specs, but if you ran a memory tester like Memtest86+ then any problems would have shown up there.

Your symptoms sound more like a power problem. At least that is where I would start. One thing you could try as a test is to remove the battery and run the laptop on just the power supply. Let's see if that changes anything.

After downloading all the windows xp updates, the stop messages stoped and the computer ran great. However, after the second restart and all consecutive restarts after that the computer doesnt load up into windows.

" When you start your computer, the Microsoft Windows XP startup screen appears, and then the computer may restart. The Windows XP logon screen does not appear. " Appears to state my problem exactly. The windows loading bar apears, but as soon as it fininishes the screen turns black and nothing hapens. The only thing that seems to work for me is reinstalling or repairing windows. Which takes a good 30-50 minutes. And after that is finished I am back to the stop error messages etc...that sare solved with the windows updates. However once the updates are isntalled the computer doesnt boot into windows after the first restart.

I have been looing at the windows xp help page and found this:

I have tried to follow the instructions step by step but it doesnt work. When I get into the recovery I do the first step. Hello, i am trying to fix a computer for my company but im not sure what the issue is.
1. The computer is on, but has blank screen. I held the power button to turn it off, waiting 1 minute and started it back up. I got the "windows has been shut down improperly" screen. I told it startup like normal and i see the Windows XP icon and the loading bar underneath. But then the screen goes black and the moniter just sits there on, with just black.
I thinking it may be either the RAM card has an error of the motherboard itself is failing, but im not sure how to test these. Any and all help would be greatly appriciated.

If this is the wrong forum, where does this go???
Last week I started up my computer and right before the logon screen was supposed to show up, it just restarted. (I guess it was a blue screen?) It told me that Windows failed to start the last time and it asked me if I wanted to use Startup Repair. Since I had nothing to lose, I just went ahead. So then it kept saying "Your computer was unable to start" and it asked me if I wanted to do system restore, but I thought that would be useless, as half of the time System Restore in Windows Recovery Environment doesn't work for me!!1 It really wasn't doing anything, so I just went ahead and turned the computer off. So when I started it up, instead of Starting Windows, I see the Windows Vista boot screen. Oddly enough, it's faster than the normal boot screen. Now, before anyone asks me if anything related to Vista is on my computer, the answer to that question is no. All I really want to know is how to restore it back to the Windows 7 boot screen. I tried bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US, but that didn't work. I would have tried bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US, but I didn't want to run into any problems.

Are there any other ways to fix this? Not that it's a problem or anything, it just looks... wrong.

Thank you in advance for any answers.

If you ask if I'm able to start my computer now, the answer to that is yes.

Basically what the title says. I have a new computer which I spent about 1300 dollars on. I built it myself and everything ran fine for about 6 months until I tried to overclock it. The bios and overclocking are pretty ***** proof since the motherboard is fairly new. You literally hit one button from normal to overclock. Since then when I boot the computer up the computer comes on for about 3 seconds, the monitor doesn't react at all, then it shuts itself off for another 3 seconds then boots up normally. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? I've seen some similar cases on here but they aren't exactly the same.

Hi -

I'm a beginner so bear with me please. I have a Sony Vaio Desktop which is probably 4 or 5 years old. It has Win XP. Last night I tried to do something I wasn't capable of - I went into the registry and I crashed the computer. I lost everything. This morning. I loaded my back up system disks and application disks. No problem. Then I started loading my own software and a few off the web like WordPerfect, Mozilla Firefox, AVG, etc. The last thing that I loaded was AVG anti-virus and I swear that before the computer went blank AVG said something about detecting a virus. Now the machine can't be loaded. It loads the first couple of screens that say Sony and then Microsoft XP (it gives the beep) and then the computer and monitor shut down. About 30 seconds later they power up and start the process of trying to sign on again. If it's a virus then I can't get on the computer to do anything about it. I tried to get in safe mode with no luck but I really don't know what I'm doing there. I have a call in for my computer expert friend, but he's no where to be found. I know the answer may require some complicated manuevers.

Any help that you can suggest is greatly appreciated. I use the computer for personal use and for volunteer work that I do. I really wish I had the bucks to just by a new one. Best Buy's interest is just too high.

Thank you

so, when I was on my computer it just randomly shut down on me.
No warning nothing.

when i tried to start it up again my computer turns on and the fans go on.
but my computer screen stays black.
the on button for the screen is flashing green meaning its on. i tried unconnecting and connecting the screen back to the computer...still nothing.

also, my keyboard doesnt light up, and my mouse (which is connected THROUGH the keyboard) turns half on (the wheel lights up, but the image doesnt light up). so i know there is electricity running through my keyboard.

can anyone explain/help me with this scenario? i've been trying at it for a couple of days now.
any sort of advise would be great (if you need any other info ill be more than welcome to provide anything to help you help me)

Answer:I can't get my computer screen to turn on, please help

Sounds to me like some kind of hardware failure. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what, but I would be inclined to say some type of Motherboard problem. If the fans spin up & devices get partial power.

Are you handy and comfortable working inside a computer? If not you might see what a technician can do with it.

Here's the deal:My mom gave me her old computer when it was about 2 years old. it was working fine except that sometime the screen wouldn't come on when you started up the computer. the lights and fan would start running and then the fan would turn off and the computer screen would stay black. well usually you could just wait a few minutes and it would start on it's own, now it won't turn on at all! the start light around the start button will come on and then fan will start like normal but before the screen will come on the fan will turn off and the screen will stay completely black but the start light will still be on. i have left it on for an entire day and still nothing. i really can't wipe the whole computer out because i have important information on it. i desperately need help. I am not good with fixing things and need to get my computer running before finals. i can get additional info if needed.any help would be amazing. Thanks.

Answer:My computer screen won't turn on!

I am wedded to the idea that your power supply is on the bonkers . There seems to be insufficient  power to the motherboard hence not enough to drive the display card. The lack of proper voltages result in the CPU resetting itself to off- mode hence stopping the fan and power supply. Much about the PC is diagnosis - sometimes right sometimes wrong - and swapping hardware that you know is good. I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

Every time I turn on my computer a blue screen appears saying all these error stuff! which gave an error code of wording of USB BUGCODE

What can I do get rid of it? Cause I need to use that computer as there are some files on it I need to access. But I cannot even do anything with the pc because every time I turn it on a blue screen appears.
Any help would be appreciated

Answer:help Keep getting blue screen when I turn computer on

ok, first that error code should have a bunch of numbers. Those numbers are important for looking up the actual cause of the error. USB BUGCODE seems, and I'm not sure of this, seems to indicate a possible error with a usb port or device. Do you have any usb devices plugged in when you try to boot up? You might try unplugging any one at a time for each boot up. Without the numbers I can only guess that a usb port has a problem. Hope this helps.

When I turn on my computer it shows nothing but a blank screen. Doesn't even go into bios 19 out of 20 times. Every now and then it boots into BIOS and begins loading Windows, but freezes at the loading screen. What could the problem be? A couple months earlier the computer would randomly shut down while I was using it. I'm assuming the problem might be the probably the power supply. It's an emachine t3624: Series&model=T3624#

And yes, I know I really need to upgrade to a new computer... but I have absolutely no money I can put towards buying one at the moment. It would take me at least a couple months to be able to afford even a cheap one....

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

My HP All In One screen won't turn on. The power button's light comes and the AC adapter port light comes on. I've taken the back off to see if the fans worked, and they do, but the screen won't come on. I've detached all USB devices (mouse, keyboard, etc) and I emptied the CD ROM, to restart the computer. Didn't work. What can I do? Also, I noticed that when I pressed the caps lock on my keyboard the caps light doesn't come on. Help me please.

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

Whenever I turn my computer on I get a black screen and it doesn't budge from there. My monitor just seems to go into sleep mode and I can't do anything. Also my dvd drive makes this horrible sound whenever I start up my computer so I swapped out the drive with another one I had around the house and it made the exact same noise. I even took out my hard drive to make sure that wasn't what was making the noise. I've never encountered such a strange problem before. I tested the optical drive in another computer and it doesn't make this noise. I just have no idea what could be causing it. Any suggestions?

P4 3.0 ghz
GeForce 6800XT 256mb PCI-E
2 gigs of RAM
Windows XP Media Center Edition

Answer:Blank screen when I turn my computer on.

Since no one else will try this one I will have a go.

First if you have no picture, why are you playing with the dvd drive?

Graunching noises suggest fan problems. Either a fan is clogged up with dirt or catching on an internal cable or just wearing out. Check all these including your graphics card.

At best this is your problem and restarting the fan will restart your picture.

Next best option is the power supply failing, not providing proper power to dvd drive and graphics card. Check by substitution.

If this does not work you have cooked something, this could be any or all of, memory, processor, graphics card. Depending on the specs of your other pc you may be able to check these out, one at a time, by substitution.

Post the results and good luck

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

Well my computer froze, and I restarted it. It got stuck restarting so I turned the power off. Now when I turn it on, it goes to the menu where the choices are Safe Mode, Normal mode and a few extras. I choose any of them , it flashes a blue screen and then restarts again, taking me to that menu again. The flash is like half a second, and I cant read it. Anybody know what is wrong? I cant turn it on at all. All the choices do the same thing? Is it dead? I dont have anything important on it luckily , other than some downloaded games and crap. Please help!!! What do I do?

Answer:Starts up, then restarts.... EVERYTIME, cant turn it on.

Same happened with me - couldn't see the screen not one bit. I found out the error message though which helped me a lot, if you find it out - you'll be able to get a faster result as people will know the exact error.

Try getting a camera and if you can put it on "continuous" shot or video it and pause it at that second. :P

Worked with me, took a picture of it lol.

Answer:Computer turns on and loads to HP screen then turn off

Hi @dukedevil74, Welcome to HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help. I understand that when you turn on the laptop, it loops at the HP logo screen. In order to better assist you, can you provide the product number of your laptop? If the computer locks up at the HP or Compaq logo screen or the Windows loading screen, try cleaning the computer vents with compressed air. Restart the computer. If Windows 10 opens, you are done. If Windows 10 does not open, go to Troubleshooting other issues with computer not starting. Let me know how it goes. If this helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution" button down below in this message. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "thumbs up" to give me Kudos.  Regards,
