Preferred Solution: New keyboard not typing, old keyboard working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Since you've only tried one new keyboard, it cannot be ruled out that you had the bad luck to get a faulty one.

Hello supporters, I have been having a problem with both my PS2 and USB keyboards. The keyboard is detected, green light (numlock) is on but it's not working or typing. I have got 2 new wired keyboards from my friend both PS2 and USB to test it out, but no avail. All the 4 keyboards are good on other systems.

I have tried to disconnect it, uninstall drivers from 'device manager' and put it back after turning it off. I've also remove dusts, reset the CMOS and used the jumper, but nothing. This goes only for the keyboards and other peripherals are working fine.

I typed this using ' On screen keyboard '. Also, When I click on caps or scroll locks on the online keyboard, it affects the hardware also, which means, the keyboard also lights on, but cannot use it directly on the device.

I am using 1 logitech keyboards and 1 old Turbo-Trak keyboard (1 usb and the other ps2 and both are mine).
I use a Biostar H6IMHB motherboard

There are NO solutions online, so I came here.
Lol, now don't tell me to uninstall drivers or reconnect keyboards after shutdown or that my motherboard is broken, because I had it earlier and like an idiot, paid 23 bucks for it (man, these local technicians will loot you until you're broke, and I'm still a student).
Thank you for reading this long essay and it is now that you people help me.

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with t... Read more

Answer:Lenovo Essential G580 Keyboard Malfunctioning (Keyboard typing unnecessary characters)

hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I'm not sure what's causing it. The main issue which has arisen (not sure how, it was like it when I went to log onto my computer this morning) is that the keyboard is not typing properly. A popup asking me if I want to turn Cadet Browsing on or off keeps displaying, and also if I type certain letters they don't display correctly. For example, if I type the letter "g", it displays as "[g". If I type the letter "b" it displays as "nb". If I type the letter "t" it displays as "-t". The letter "y" displays as "y5". The other letters are okay it seems.
I've tried to do a system restore both normally and in safe mode but I get the error saying that it was unable to complete as it failed to extract the file from the restore point. I tried it for two different restore points.
What should I do? Thanks for any help you can provide!Oh, and I also ran Malware Bytes and it didn't find any infections.

Answer:System Restore Not Working and Keyboard not Typing Properly

Sorry, I also meant Caret Browsing not Cadet Browsing, above.

Hello everybody,I've got really strange problem that I never saw before. A month ago I got a ThinkPad E450 and after 20 days the problem with keyboard started. When I was typing, keyboard stops typing, seems like somebody clicked on task bar. So I had to click again on the page to resume typing. I talked to tech support and they told me I can return the laptop because it may has a problem with motherboard. I returned it and ordered a new T450s. I received this one 2 days ago and now I have same problem with this one. I updated all drivers, and nothing installed on the laptop besides Office and Skype.  Has anybody an idea about this problem. I am totally frustrated. Thanks for all helps

I own a Lenovo 3000 y410  and as my title indicates it is constantly typing q even without  touching the keyboard. This doesn't seem like it is a physical problem because i was able to take the key totally off ( so that there was nothing on the sensor), and clean this area with compressed air. Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

Answer:Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

On my laptop Satellite L20 not working keyboard and touchpad, but keyboard work in BIOS, USB-ports also not working (USB mouse).

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

Answer:X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

SOLVED!  I simply had to update the drivers in the device manager.  For some reason they were corrupt and it could not load them.  Simple fix, just took too much thought and digging to find solution.

Hi All,

My laptop had a blue screen and keyboard stops working as well, I plugged the external keyboard and re-install the windows, now half of the keys are working and half dosent.

I am wondering has the kyboard damaged, I am also not sure if the I replace the keyboard will it work?

is there any settings in bios or any utility can fix the problem, could some one please advise?

Thanks
Nysoh

Answer:Keyboard stops working - USB external keyboard is fine

Hello Nysoh

On this virtual way nobody can say for sure what the problem is but if the internal keyboard is not working properly first step is keyboard replacement. If the problem still persists then troublemaker can be keyboard port or keyboard controller.

As far as I know BIOS has nothing to do with this issue.

I've had my desktop for a few years and never had a problem.  Just recently, it has started showing a Keyboard Error message on a black screen when I boot it up.  The wireless keyboard and mouse do not work, although it appears to boot up correctly.  Since I have a password on my computer, I cannot log in or do anything.  When this happens, I've rebooted 2-3 times, and it the keyboard and mouse will finally start working.  I have moved the toggle to different USB ports and this does not appear to make a difference.  How do I prevent this from happening?

Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

My husbands ASUS touch screen laptop-keyboards are not working. I know it has windows 8. Core i3 intel inside. Like I said it is a touchscreen and neither the hardware keyboard or touch screen keyboard will do any thing (well it is like the computer understands i am doing something with the keyboard, but not typing. Ex. i will type and the curser line will do nothing but suddenly go like an italicized line. The mouse works and the touch screen works but I cannot type anything. I have wiggled the keys thinking maybe something is stuck but no help. also I have restored it to its factory settings thinking maybe he accidentally set some keyboard sleep command or something. We are both not smart at this, and again it is not my computer, he has it for work, so who knows what he did to it. But yeah, after restore it still wouldn't work and now I am stuck at the registration "getting started" windows and I cannot bypass them....or don't know how to without being about to type. The last it worked he said he cleaned it with pressurized air, so I don't know if that was too much for the keys...if he actually blew dirt into it, or what strange thing could have happened...but the fact that both touch screen and actual keyboard aren't working I am left stumped. I hope I gave enough information on the computer. It has that surface windows...he normally just uses the desk top mode. Ok thank you for any advice.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I though the PS/2 connector was damaged or something so i changed the keyboard for an USB one, now the mouse pointer moves around ok but still cannot type a thing, therefore still can get into windows    , i tried already in SAFE MODE and going back to the last good config. but that didn't solve the problem, I CAN NAVIGATE THE BIOS AND MAKE CHANGES BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE LETTER KEYS DONT WORK.... the new keyboard works fine in other PCs.        HELP!!

So I decided to clean my usb keyboard so I opened it with some screw drivers, little did I kow the re-assembly would be so difficut. There where these little plastic pieces for each key but they where loosly placed on some plastic sheets. I did my best at placing everything and pluged it in.

It won't type now. First time it wasn't typing but then I did something, and it typed again but a couple keys where not, so I reopened, placed and tried again. Now it's not typing at all. I'm on the on-screen kb and when I press num lock and caps lock the little green lights do turn on the usb keyboard.

I've tried uninstallng and reinstalling the drivers many times but it doesnt work. Also, for some reason, 2 HID KB devices appear, and it keeps installing one of them when scanning for plug n play devices, even when it's not plugged in.

So help please, thanks!

Answer:USB Keyboard not typing

Its corrupted now. Better purchase a new one. Never open the keyboard to its last level(separating the plastic sheets), it damages your keyboard for life.

Hi. I am using on-screen keyboard right now because my keyboard infinitely types M's if I touch it. Also, it continues typing M's on its own. I have tried taking the keys off and cleaning underneath, but that doesn't work and the key doesn't appear to be stuck down. It didn't type random M's when I restarted it the first time, but now even at login on start up it types M's. Does anyone have any idea what I should do? Thank goodness for on-screen keyboard though, eh?

Answer:keyboard typing by itself

my colleague at work uses a Dell Inspiron 1501, 512mb ddr2-4300, AMD mobile turion 64 2.0ghz running windows xp sp2, which i just updated to sp3
We have just reinstalled windows xp, as it was full of rubbish and we wanted to improve the speed of it
before i reinstalled, i noticed that on my computer properties, it said that the cpu was running at 797mhz, however at times it does go back up to 2.0ghz.
It still does this after the reinstall.
The main issue is that there is almost constant keyboard lag, each letter will take a few seconds delay before it is on the screen.
I have tried everything i know, has anyone else had this problem before??
Could it be anything to do with the cpu freq issue? or ram?
any help is greatly appreciated

Answer:keyboard/typing lag

If you've only got 512meg of ram for XP, then you only have HALF enough.
Dell is famous for NOT installing enough ram for the installed OS.

That computer will run MUCH better with a full gigabyte and even better yet with TWO.

When the keyboard is lagging it means that the CPU is too busy to service the keyboard. The keyboard has a very low priority.

Without enough ram, your OS is living off of the hard drive. That's over a thousand times slower than the ram it should be using.

Then if you've loaded some heavy duty, resource hog, like Norton, all bets are off for getting any kind of performance out of that underpowered system.

You could also have services that you don't need and background programs that you don't need....running all the time and just sucking up system resources.

Get more Ram.

Hello all;

recently, my ASUS laptop keyboard has been acting really erratic. Some examples are that every time I press a key, it types a different key or another key along with it, some keys simply don't work at all, and some keys just initiate some kind of massive sequence of autotyping a single character or random characters.

At first, I thought something must be wrong with the physical keyboard itself, but the day after I noticed the issue (which is actually today), I discovered some functions of my internet browsers aren't working probably either and not only because of the unknown keystrokes. Some of the website certificates I visited suddenly weren't trusted.

To go along with that, the touch pad I use to navigate and click on items tends to go in and out, but the actual two mouse buttons work fine. Another strange quirk when I opened notepad was that somehow the auto-key strokes started typing my computer's date and time!

I have run the latest MalwareBytes anti-malware with a full-scan and did remove some malicious objects, but the problem still remains. Could I have a virus/key-logger? Can anyone help?

Thanks for any assistance

Answer:Keyboard typing on its own

Have you tried using another keyboard?
What model Asus is it?

The certificate problem could be the computer clock is off which usually means a bad CMOS battery.

EDIT:  Any chance some liquid could of been spilled on it?

Hey guys! I have got a weird problem with my laptop! when i am typing on keyboard, and i press certain keys, it is not typing what it should. I checked the keyboard configuration, it is on US standard, it is not British English or something else, I read somewhere that it can happen because of BIOS, so I updated it.
thanks

Answer:Keyboard typing not what it should

as you are using a laptop have you tried the manufacturers website for a keyboard driver?

Hi

I got a laptop One K56-3N2 (Clevo P157SM) and it's keyboard keeps typing "\" without me pressing it. I tried cleaning the key but the problem persisted. I tried turning the "\"-key off / remapping it with an aplication and it did work in a way. I could remap the "\"-key to do something else, like to be a left arrow, and when i press it did work like a left arrow but it still wouldn't stop typing "\" without me pressing it.

on my keyboard to type a "@" i type "Ctr+Alt+Q". it works overall expect when I am in outlook 2010 trying to enter an email address - i.e. when I need it most.

Answer:keyboard not typing @

You don't say where you are I'll bet your '@' key is available if you press the 'Shift' and '2' keys (US keyboard), or the 'shift' and ' key (UK keyboard). If so it's because your laptop's keyboard is set to the wrong location. Go into Control Panel, 'region and language', then the 'keyboard & language' tab - change to whichever location your keyboard is from."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Hey gang, maybe someone out there can help me with this?

Every now and then, for some unknown reason, my keyboard gets a mind of it's own and begins typing letters I didn't strike.

It only happens when I'm already typing, like I'll be writing something and suddenly my word will turn into "week444444444444."

For some odd reason, a group of numbers just show up sometimes, inserting themselves into words I'm typing.

I'm wondering if it's because I currently use a device to share a keyboard and mouse between two computers. Maybe once I unhook that device, things will work normally. Though I'm not having that problem on the other computer sharing the keyboard, so that might not be it.

I dunno, it's mighty confusing. I can live with it, though if there's a way to fix it, I'd certainly love to give it a shot.

Anyone out there got any suggestions? I'd sure appreciate them!

Cheers,

Snaithbert

Started a few days ago and has gotten progressively worse. Keyboard keeps typing stuff, not actual words just stuff like ?&!!!!!$ or the back button etc. Sometimes it's gone for a few hours and then it comes back even worse. I ran AVG which found nothing, Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files and deleted them, and Search and Destroy which deleted what it found. And yet, the problem persists.

I don't have access to the original Windows CD so I'm unable to reboot.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions as I am way out of my element here.

Restart your computer. You have a stick key problem. I forgot what exactly it is called and how to cure it without restarting since I had this issue, but it was a while ago.

Any ideas?

While probably dusting the keyboard off, I noticed it just stopped working. I am typing this using an external Dell USB keyboard attached to the laptop.I tried every thing by the websites , manuals, commensense, pcdoctors and non of the keys on the primary keyboard will work.Even the Ctrl+Alt+Del won't work. No NumLock, No sceenlock, No caps lock - nothing. Is there any hidden key combination which renders a keyboard totally inactive?I doubt that dusting with a feather could do it. Thanking in anticipation.KS

Answer:KEYBOARD STOPPED WORKING, AN EXTERNAL USB KEYBOARD DOES

Doubt it's a key combination.Case is about disconnected wire of it - happens to be under the keyboard. It's a pity you didn't mention the model of laptop. But, however, you can find a manual on how to disassembly it on lenovoservicetraining.com

ok...so, i'm forced to use this onscreen keyboard, because my keyboard suddenly stopped working . tried switching it with another one i know works, and had the same problem with it, so, that rules out the keyboard it's self as having the issue. tried a sys restore...same prob. tried reinstalling windows, still have the problem. i have a driver for my texas instruments usb ports that is reading not successfully installed but i can't seem to find the driver 4 it anywhere, because they claim win 7 installs it automatically...but it obviously didn't. i have tried switching usb ports, tried pulling out the usb to the keyboard restarting, then plugging back in, and still have this issue. can anyone please help? ps: not getting error messages, and the keyboard claims "this device is working properly"

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 computer with the Dell keyboard that came with it. I've had it for almost 5 years. The past few weeks, I've had problems with the keyboard not inputting the letters I type. I'll type a sentence or 2 and look up to see only 1/2 of the first sentence is there.
This mostly happens when I'm posting on online forums. It has yet to happen when I'm working in Word.

Any ideas anyone?

What is wrong with the one you linked above? Aside from the fact that it cannot type for you?  I too bought one that showed a different laptop. I did so under the premise that the title described the product and figured the owner was being lazy. The thing fit perfectly and was priced similarly.

Answer:Keyboard/Typing Issues

I'm having the exact same thing on my Dell laptop. Are there any answers?

1) Please don't bump old posts. If you have a problem, start your own thread. Help will come faster that way usually.
2) This is almost always caused by the fact that the user of the laptop accidentally hits their trackpad with their wrist while typing, causing the cursor to move and click someone else, losing focus of the text box they were typing in. Some laptops are more prone to this due to their design.

The solution is:

1) Be more careful and don't hit the trackpad.
2) Use a mouse and disable the trackpad.
3) Disable trackpad's tap-to-click feature (if possible).

I'm running on a HP Pavilion a6230n desktop running on windows vista. I use Firefox (and Internet explorer, my parents use it) The computer is about 3yrs old. The keyboard came with the computer.
The problem I'm having is with my keyboard not typing out what I'm spelling. For example if I wanted to go to deviantart.com it'll come up something random like 6[h4;clw\o==v,. I have to erase and retype for it to work right (It's happening in both firefox and internet explorer). And it's not just urls, it happens when I try to log into an instant messenger(spells my username wrong) and has happaned when I'm typing a reply back to someone to typing out a new im to send. I don't have an issue typing in forums, or in emails, etc. It's just the url,and im issues I'm getting.

I've already tried cleaning my keyboard(which it looks a lot better but I'm still having the issue). I'm not sure what else to do other than consider seeing if a new keyboard has this issue or not.

Can anyone help me out? I'm at a loss on what to do on this irritating issue.

Ever since I got this new PC with Win7 two weeks ago, I've had problems when typing text in applications, web forums, etc. I'll be merrily typing along and somehow a random combination of keys I hit causes some unintended action, such as the opening of a new window, switching focus to another open application, opening a different application, or activating some feature I don't want. Does Win7 and/or typical apps have tons of keyboard macros or shortcuts on by default, and how can I disable them?

All I'm doing is typing normal text, I swear I'm not hitting the Windows key or some combination of ALT_CTRL_X or anything like that. Maybe it's this crummy USB keyboard, is it possible that it interprets rapid keystrokes as the wrong thing?

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

I recently purchased a Toshiba laptop on Black Friday in 2010. It has run great since then but now when you type on it, the letter are all jumbled up, the spacebar does not work and when you hit the backspace key it displays a w.

This happened when my wife was chatting in Yahoo. She typed in a WORD doc and it is doing the same thing. She has rebooted the PC, same thing. We are going to try hooking up another keyboard, but I was wondering if this may be a virus or if the keyboard has gone bad.

Note: Our 16 month old loves to type on it anytime she can get near it, much to our trying to stop her. Any chance she changed a setting on the PC by accident?

Any help is VERY appreciated.

Answer:keyboard/typing issues

Have you tried a Factory restore on the system? If there were a setting changed it would restore it to factory defaults. A warning though, you will lose all the programs and data files that you have installed or created since you purchased the laptop.

Answer:Keyboard typing different keys from what it normally does

This just started suddenly? No spilling of any liquid or other "abuse" of the computer? It sounds to me like the keyboard gets the wrong signals - not even enabling num lock or anything of the kind should result in such behavior - the space bar, return and back key are all pretty much the same on all keyboard-types - unless you've installed some sort of key-remapper (which is highly unlikely, given you've done a system restore) - which makes me wonder - have you run a keyboard test from the BIOS/startup diagnostic? Most likely it's a shot keyboard, given that no abuse has taken place - run the diagnostic test on the keyboard, and see what turns up.

A friend had a malware / virus attack in Chrome. It was a beeping warning that Windows Defender had error 0x80060402. She used the Task Manager to shut down Chrome and then shut off her laptop. When she tried to turn it on again nothing happened, it would not turn on. I now have the laptop, a Lenovo G580. I managed to get it started by removing all power, AC adapter, Battery and CMOS battery. I got to the Win 10 logon screen to enter her password, but no matter what key I press, it only types the number 6 in the password field. I have restarted many times with the same result. If I power down the laptop, it will not start again until I remove all power and the CMOS battery. It will then start up again, after reinstalling CMOS battery and connecting AC power. If I just restart, it will start again. I can not get into the BIOS. The time and date on the lock screen a wrong, but no way to get into the BIOS to change. I removed the hard drive and tried to boot with a boot CD, no luck there either.
I am hoping that the all powerful computer gurus on here can help.

Answer:Keyboard only typing the number 6

For the moment, my first thought is to try an external KB on it ... Then try booting and BIOS hotkeys, and go from there.

I'd also be sure of a BIOS reset by removing AC, batt and BIOS Batt, then holding power down on it for 30 sec (count it out).
(This works on my HP, may or may not work for the Lenovo, but worth a shot)

Sometime ago I spill water on my keyboard, on the area of character '1'. And ever since the key '1' keeps typing himself when unneeded.
After the splitting I detached the keyboard and dried it, I cleaned it several times after it too. When nothing helped I even switched to a brand new keyboard, but even this didn't help.
So if the problem not in the keyboard, where it can be? Maybe it's the old connections of the keyboard and laptop? Maybe the connection is a little wrong? Or on what another levels the problem might be..

Guys I'll be grateful for answers and advices, really want t solve this problem

Hi,
I've been having a problem for several weeks, when I start typing nothing is recognised for a few seconds. Its not lag because I'm not wireless and at I've tried typing doesn't catch up. Even typing this, keys don't react all the time.
I did think that this was my keyboard to start with but I've changed it and to start with everything seemed fine but things are now back to what they were before.
Any ideas from anyone?

The typing does not stay on the page where I type.  The cursor can bounce to a different area on the screen and many times I lose what i typed. It just goes haywire.  I also have letters stick and run across the screen so that I have to backspace to get back to where i left off. I even tried a seperate key board thinking that the problem was keys sticking but it does it on the remote key board also.  Regards,Carmel

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. Attached to the laptop is a 21” monitor and a usb/wireless keyboard and mouse. Everything has worked fine until this week.
When I start typing on the keyboard – either the laptop keyboard or the usb keyboard - it correctly types the first letter; thereafter it proceeds to display all the number and letters on the keyboard starting from the top left and running l to r regardless of what is actually being typed.
The keyboard is OK; I have tried it on an older laptop also running Windows 7. The keyboard settings seem to be OK, set to United Kingdom (also tried USA but with same result).
Ironically, the keyboards run OK in Word (hence this posting) but resorts to gibberish in browsers (all browsers).
At 70+ years of age, I don’t pretend to be a computer whiz kid but I am coming to the conclusion that I next need to uninstall and then reinstall Windows and if that does not rectify the problem, buy a new computer.
But before I do, anyone any bright ideas?

Answer:Keyboard typing gibberish

Sounds more like you have a virus / malware of some description if its only happening in browsers.
What protection programs do you have? I think you need to scan for virus and malware.

Can someone help please? When I am typing whether it be in explorer or any other program my words are showing up backwards. Anyone know whats causing this?

Answer:Keyboard is typing backwards!

1.  What operating system and service pack level are you using; e.g.  Windows XP Home Edition SP2?2.  Boot into Safe Mode, which loads a basic set of drivers, to see how it performs.  Safe Mode also disables much of the software scheduled to load at startup (so there's less exposure to virus/malware activity). As you power up your system, tap the F8 key about once per second or faster.  Hopefully you'll see a startup menu with an option to boot into Safe Mode.  Use the up/down arrows of the key to select an item.  Select Safe Mode item and hit Enter key.3.  Try a different keyboard.4.  Run a malware scan.

Hey guys, anyone have this problem or can shed some light..........

have just taken possession of a new computer, HP Pavillion, running Win8.1 in the last 2 weeks...............

all seems to be working fine except for some minor irritations............. one being punctuation

If I attempt to use either an apostrophe or quotation marks ( ' ) ( " ).... it blanks, nothing on screen, tap the key again and it doubles up "" ...........

I've also noticed I cannot [click] quote and add someone elses comment to my own post on forums............ so is this all an IE problem or is it just me....

any suggestions on a postcard welcome,

Rogues

Might be a bit basic but does the keyboard need a clean? Are the keys sticky 'cos something's been spilled on it?

Just today, I started noticing some problems with my keyboard on my Windows XP Media Edition SP2 desktop computer. Every time I push a certain key regardless if I'm typing a post such as this or not, something unusual will occur. Here is some examples:

- Typing "E" will open My Computer.
- Typing "U" will open up the Utility Manager along with Microsoft Narrator.
- Typing "L" will log me out of my account.
- Typing "M or D" usually minimizes stuff such as Internet Browsers and takes me back to the desktop.
- Typing "R" brings up that Run Program field that you can access from the Start Menu.
- Typing "B" will make the current window inactive.
- Typing "F" will open the Search window for locating files on the computer.

Besides the letter "M", typing those letter mentioned above can only be typed by holding the shift button. So far, I tried turning off my computer and then turning it back on. The keyboard did work normally for about 5 minutes before the problem appeared again. I am now lost on what to do next. That keyboard is the only keyboard I have and it is a PS/2 type keyboard if that helps.

Answer:Typing on my keyboard has become a hassle.

You've got a stuck CTRL key. The things that open are exactly what would open if you used CTRL-[key]. Gently remove the CTRL key and clean around the contact. If you are getting sticky keys then it's easier to buy a new keyboard than to fiddle with a failing one. If you can borrow a keyboard then use it to test the system - I'm confident that the problem is as above.

.
Regarding your touch pad, did you actually disable it to confirm it's not interfering? There's usually a key combination for toggling the pad off/on. Check your keyboard for sticking keys. You could also plug in an external keyboard to see if it makes a difference.

I recently moved from a desktop to a laptop and have encountered a problem. I presume that I rest my wrist on the computer and must activate some key combination that results in disabling the keyboard for any typing in any program. The short keys for copy and save etc still work, so do the function keys, the pad (if active) and the mouse. The only way I found to fix it is to reboot the computer. Thus far I tried to recreate this under controlled conditions with no success. Anybody can help me? Even if it makes me fill totally stupid? Please?

My computer starting acting funny a couple weeks ago, about the same time I started getting a nasty little message about my hard drive going to fail iminantly. My keyboard started to skip while I was typing. It's not like it would take a second to two to catch up, it just wouldn't register anything I typed. I would have to wait for it to quit doing whatever it was doing (usually about a two seconds) and then it would work again. It did it about every 10-15 key strokes. My mouse also started freezing while I was trying to move it.

I replaced my hard drive tonight and it is still doing the same thing. I have no idea what could be causing it.

The computer is a HP Pavilion ZE4145 (notebook) running Windows XP.

Any ideas?

in the desktop ie and the url bar of the metro ie the keyboard numbers row doesn't work, every key in that row just repeatedly types the most recently pressed key that isn't in that row. I can type numbers with the number pad on the side of the keyboard but not symbols like @,#,$ and the rest. sometimes I write something into another program and copy and paste, but some websites don't let you do that. so how do you get the numbers row on the keyboard to work?

Answer:keyboard numbers row not typing in ie

Just taking a wild stab in the dark here as I don't use IE but have you checked your keyboard settings on the bottom of your screen (that ENG button on the lower right on the Task Bar)? Mine got mysteriously changed to French Canada the other day and I couldn't use my number row.

I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more

Hello, A question from a clueless lenovo newbie - I've had my ideapad flex 14 for about a year and while the touchscreen works perfectly, the option to type using the touchscreen keyboard doesn't come up.  So if I touch an area to type into, I get a blue arrow/tag, but no keyboard...as if i got disabled somehow... I hoep that makes sense... Has anyone else had this problem? If anyone has any recommendations, please get in touch! Thank you, Louise
