Cleaning inside of laptop for first time

Question: Cleaning inside of laptop for first time

Hello, I'm sitting here with my Sony Vaio model PCG-61112L juuuust about cracked open and waiting to be cleaned. I've noticed lately that fps during games has been dipping, and i'll get gpu driver errors whe browsing the web, causing my display to refresh (always recovers). This is why i am cleaning it out now.

I've got my RAM chips, battery, and what i think is the hard drive removed, and all screws out. When i tried opening the bottom case, i then noticed that there is a small black cable attached to the case. I have no idea what this is, but it is attached to a ribbon thing next to where the RAM chips were labelled as "To MB." Sounds like it has something to do with the motherboard, but all i want to do is disconnect it or something so i can get the bottom casing off so i can clean this thing. Any help on this would be fantastic.

Preferred Solution: Cleaning inside of laptop for first time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Cleaning inside of laptop for first time

"and what i think is the hard drive removed" & "I have no idea what this is" Click to expand...

Do you have a service manual for this laptop? My advice, since you don't sound very knowledgeable or experienced, is to stop what you're doing. Your problems about FPS & GPU driver errors are most likely due to other issues than the computer needing cleaning.

Hey everyone!

A friend of mine gave me an HP Pavilion dv1411se notebook and I would like to give the fan and heatsink a thorough cleaning, although I'm pretty positive the fan doesn't work at all. However, I've seen pictures online of how much dust can build up on the heatsink and I'd like to get that taken care of. Ultimately, I would like to replace the fan and possibly the heatsink altogether, but for now, giving both a proper cleaning will give me peace of mind. My objective is to pull the thing apart in order so do so.

This will be my first time doing anything like this and my reason for wanting to is the fact that computer repair shops are just too damn expensive for my budget, plus I'd really just like to know how.

Does anyone have any good words of advice before I tear into my laptop? I've read somewhere that static electricity can "fry the system." Is this true? I'm planning on getting rid of the dust from the heatsink with a vacuum, but I've also read that this isn't always a safe practice either.

I'm gonna use the HP Maintenance and Service guide to assist me:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00636251.pdf

If anyone else has any other tips or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

My friend has a laptop that he has had for about 5 years now. He has stopped using it because it is slow and often freezing. It is running windoes 7 i think. I said I would take it and try to sort it out for him as I know you guys would be able to help me. I don't think he ever did malware/virus scans. Probably everything that would need doing is going to have to be done. He has probably never done any updates to anything. I don't really know where to start so was hoping someone could talk me through it.

Answer:Cleaning up and removing malware from an old laptop for the first time

1/ Is there any Data that requires to be backed up first - That he needs ?.....DO THAT FIRST !
If not - i would restore it to the day he got / if it has a Factory Restore Partition.

2/ If you choose the Factory Restore option , goto the Manufactures site of the Laptop / enter the Model etc / follow the Instructions to Restore.

After that is done / you then need to do all Windows Updates / Antivirus / and Install your Programs.

3/ If you need to just clean it up / or the restore partition is not available , and just remove any Malware / Viruses etc....

Then you will need to post the Make / Model and wait for assistance in the removal of such and post various Logs as instructed.

Just a simple question (I think) - after opening my pc after three months it seems to have accumulated a lot of dust. What is the best way to clean the motherboard and components?many thanks all

Answer:Cleaning inside the pc

I use a 1 inch soft paintbrush and brush dust and fluff to bottom of case then use vacuum cleaner.Make sure that you remove static by touching part of case without paint, or a screw fitting, do not use vacuum directly on any computer parts. Also you could use canned air and blow dust out of hard to get places, about £5 a tin. I have been useing these methods for about 10 years without any grief.Regards G.

Hello. My computer at present doesn't have SP2 on it due to extreme slowdown problems when I tried to update to SP2 so I figured I was on borrowed time before I had issues. Now AVG detected JS/Downloader agent and couldn't clean it so I began researching and found this site. I went through the 5 steps except I had a problem with the DSS running. It encountered a problem and had to close. So I sit here before you with limited knowledge of how all of this stuff works but I really like your step by step instructions. Here is my HiJack This log and some other scan right behind it. Let me know what I should do next. Thanks in advance,

Hi, Have you ever cleaned the inside of a monitor? I just bought a second hand monitor and it's covered with nicotine. I have taken the plastic cover off and I sprayed it with Pinesol inside and out.( works excellent!) I was wondering if it would be ok to spray the pinesol all over the electronic board and circuts and spray rince well with water and then allow to dry in the sun for a day or 2 before pluggin it back in again. Do you think this would be ok ? Have you ever tried this? Thanks ! Incase your wondering why I want to clean the inside, well because when the curcuit board heats up the nicotine really stinks!

Answer:Cleaning the inside of a monitor

Be a little more carefull. Certain parts of the monitor can electricute you. There is around 40000volts under the rubber pad on the top of the tube.

I have repaired over 50 monitors but I know the risks and how to work inside screens. I have also gotten screens out of rain storms and they still work but it is NOT a good idea to clean the boards with any liquid due to shock hazard.

A word of advice, take the plastic off, DON'T touch the boards or tube inside the monitor and clean the plastic far away from the screen, let it dry and put it back on.

If you feel you need to clean electronic components a compressed air tube should suffice. The smell is probably from flame retardant material, not necessarily the nicotene (though I don't doubt that is part of it)
Cheers

Answer:Cleaning the Inside of Computers...?

Hi sharky,
The cans of compresseed air for pc's are ok. Just dont shake them while you are spraying. When you do use them watch for liquid then stop. Then try again. I personally use the electric compressor we have at work. Everyone who has a pc needs one of those !! LOL You can also use an anti static vacuum. they arent very expensive, I dont think, and they work pretty well.

Morning Chaps,I think it about time I sprused up my desktopbox. Noticed the other day (floppydisc obsolete now..)floppy drive entrance to be caked in dust. I am assuming then, that the insides of the box are in the same (or worse!!)condition. Could this be the reason that, if I click eg. **start** or bring up the hidden icions on the taskbar at the bottom, for just a second or 2 all icons leave desktop then reappear. Seems to be doing this more often and can't think why... Am fully up-to-date with AV and antispyware etc, so don't think it virus attack. Hello, I was wondering what is the best canned air to blow out my fans and the inside of the PC without damaging or potential damaging of hardware.

Thank you.

I would say anything that is cheap and comes in a reasonable quantity. My expirience is that its better to get smaller bottles in packs rahter than one big can.

I run my pc with the panels off, mainly because for no particular reason it likes to forget that I have any or all hard drives and crash, until I disconnect and reconnect them at which point it can 'see' them again. I don't know why this happens.

For one, I don't know if it is good to have the side panels off, for one thought of the fan being useless, and is it absolutely essential for a well running pc?

The other and main thing I wonder, is this: Inside my PC is horrendously dusty. Three years dusty to be specific.
Especially since I have the feeling it is a main culprit for my many machine check exceptions, I feel I should probably clean it out, but I don't know the best way how. I don't have a can of compressed air, and I don't even know if that would have a chance of... dislodging some of those little chips and pieces on the circuit boards.
Basically I just don't know how I would go about effectively cleaning out the dust in a way that would not harm my hardware.

Help?

Answer:Cleaning dust out of the inside of your machine?

Well, I don't have a can of compressed air, So what i do. Is that I take a paint brush, inch wide, 1/2 inch thick(I wish I had a slightly smaller one) and I gently brush the inside of my PC. As for around pins on the Mobo, I use a Tiny brush and blow on the pins.... It works for me. Just be careful not to bend pins or unplug things. But thats what I do.

I had a processor upgrade about 2 months ago.In the 2 month period I've had it, I've noticed a 5 degree increase in temperature(both on idle and under load). I was 41 degrees at idle, now it's 46 degrees.I'm assuming this is just due to a build up of fluff/dust on the cpu heatsink and fan.I know you don't use a hoover to suck out the dust, but what's a safe way to remove this dust/fluff?As it's a Athlon xp2400+ cpu I know these sort of temperatures are nothing to worry about, but would just like to keep the temperature as low as possible.Cheers, dagwoood.

Hi Forum,
I want to clean my Satellite Pro A40 carefully inside due to overheating problems.

Does anyone can provide me with a kind of manual how to open the SPA40 properly resp. how to clean it.

I think to blow some compressed air inside will not solve the problem, there is a lot of dirt and dust inside.

Iwant to do it myself, so please don't recommand me to contact a technical specialist.

Thanxx in advance...

Answer:Cleaning Satellite Pro A40 inside due to overheating problems

Hi

> I want to do it myself, so please don't recommend me to contact a technical specialist.

In my own opinion generally it?s not a bad suggestion if some advises to contact a notebook technician for a heatsink cleaning because the disassembling of most new-generation notebooks is not easy and very tricky. Mostly the one or the other has no experience and in such cases it?s better to contact an ASP for the help as to try to clean the notebook and probably to damage some parts.
If the warranty is valid then such procedure will cancel the warranty validity

But don?t worry buddy ;) I will try to help you as far as I can?
I goggled a little bit and found this nice [instruction |http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA45/Satellite-A45-remove-hinges-1.htm] how to disassemble the Satellite A45.
The A45 is very similar to the A40 and therefore the notebook pictures should be the same.

The step 4 (picture ) and step 5 shows the dirty heatsink and how to remove it.
You don?t need to disassemble the whole notebook but only the heatsink cover at the bottom of the unit.

Okay first off I pay close to $110 for internet a month so Its safe to say I have a good internet connection (even though i have a router) but when im gaming on the computer (low system requirement games that were made in like 1996 off of quake 2 engine) ill lag at some points, i dont know what it is or when it started (or maybe its been doing it ever since i got the computer (or the gfx card)) but when a go into a server on the game thats like semi crowded ill get hugee lag (but my ping doesnt rise, my FPS just goes super low like to 11 FPS from 40 - 60 average) and i tell peopel in the game any1 else lagging? and no1 else is but me, the same problem happens when i play World of warcraft, ive been trying to figure it out for a long time people say it could be my nvidia drivers arent up to date but ive looked for new ones and they either screw up my computer or dont seem to be working or making a difference (maybe ive been dling the wrong ones) but i have a compaq presario, 704mb of ram, umm... like 6 gigs left out of a 30gig hard drive, what else.... ive had the computer for a year and a half.... its AMD 3000+ sempron whatever that means (im not too computer tech literate) 2.00ghz ... graphics card is GeForce 5500 AMD... thats about it, so i dont know what the problem is but I'm hoping to correct this problem soon. also if it matters when i use fraps (PC video game video capturing program) its all good but then when i press the button for it to start recording it seriously ... I think it's because of your graphics card. It probably can't handle the graphics since it's pretty old.

hey, first post here, hope this is the right place for it...

i'm wondering if right now is a good time to buy a gaming pc. i know there is always something better on the horizon so you gotta just jump in and make a decision, but i'm not super tech savy. not sure if i should wait for windows 7 and direct x 11 cards and when am3/i7(ddr3 setups) are more affordable.

first i'll explain what i want to do, then i'll post the specs of what i'm planning to buy and hopefully somebody has some advice. i'm a college student who isn't in debt and have some money saved up, so it's not like it's of dire importance that i buy at the best possible time, but i'm reasonable enough to wait if it's worth it.

most importantly i want to be able to play starcraft 2 and diablo 3 on high to very high with 30 fps on at least 1440 res. i know they're not out and there are no benchmarks, but pure speculation on your part is fine by me.

secondly i'd like to play dawn of war II 30 fps at 1690 res (if that's too high 1440 is fine)

thirdly i'd like to get the enthusiast crysis experience. i know i'm probably not going to get 1690 and 45 fps, but 30 fps on 1440 sounds great to me personally.

also, plan on getting prototype for the pc

i plan on overclocking too.

the other stuff i need to do, i'm sure this will be fully capable of delivering.
here are the specs (suggest away, i'm not locked ... Read more

Answer:Is this a good time to buy? (proposed build inside)

Short on time here, may edit back later.
Now is a decent time to build, AMD, Nvidia, and Intel have thrown in their latest and greatest(?) into the market for a little while, enough time for prices to drop and newer midrange winners to come out.
Decent build, I would up the motherboard to maybe a 790GX or something if you are an over****er, and I would get a 945, and go with an AM3 motherboard since prices of AM3 and DDR3 are FAR lower, nearly DDR2 and AM2+ prices.
I do not think the CPU cooler is outstandingly good, i'm sure Rage_3K_Moiz or someone knowledgeable can recommend a sturdy cooler and thermal compound if you need it. You can certainly go down to a corsair 550, and should if you do not plan on adding in another graphics card.
Quad cores are, again I mention, not the best for gaming, though AM3 leaves many more upgrade paths than an intel dual core, the E8xxx series dual cores still dominate the gaming market, though a phenom IIx4 or x3 are good deals.
I personally may wait a little and see if AMD can throw out some speedy new 40nm 4870?s, but go ahead and order when we fix up your build if you want, 55nm -> 40nm is not going to bring a world of wonder, I don?t think.

I had to replace a faulty Hard Drive. I put the new one in a a little while ago and it booted up fine. I then shut off the computer before XP setup to re-arrange the SATA connections. I tried starting the PC again and it is freezing at the screen in the JPG every time...

How many of you that actually use Vista, use it as your only OS?

Obviously if your job requires you using XP or something else, that doesn't count.

As your personal choice at home or wherever, how many of you use Vista as your only OS, without dual-booting or anything like that?

There is a reason why I ask... I'm curious how many people that have actually given Vista a shot have switched.

I've had this problem for months now. Every single time I connect a device to my laptop through the USB port, all the data inside that device is deleted within seconds. It just disappeared away, it didn't go into the Recycle Bin. I've checked and this is not a problem coming from the device. Every device I use, from PSP, camera, to a random USB storage stick has gotten this problem, and it only happens with my laptop (I'm currently using my other PC).

The weird thing is, on the exact second that my files started disappearing, another file named "Recycledsuc.sys" appeared. And also, the files in my storage device didn't disappear altogether. It was deleted one by one.

I had thought that there was a virus/malware/trojan/... messing my computer up. I tried several free (didn't have the money to buy an AV program) anti-virus programs, but none helped. I used Avast! Free Edition, AVG Free 8.5, Kaspersky 2010 trial version, McAfee trial version, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. None of them detected a virus, except for Spybot S&D. That being said, the problem is still there.

Also worth noting is that, I didn't run all these programs simultaneously. I ran an AV program, then uninstalled it, then installed a new AV program and ran it. I only kept Spybot S&D and Microsoft SE. And before posting in these forums, there was another problem. Symantec Anti Virus kept popping... Read more

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

The above link is to the first thread I started aboutt his problem a few motnhs ago. When it was happening the first time, I could be playing a game or just general PC use and the montior would switch off and the computer shutdown and then the fans insdie the box run at an extremely high RPM. This happened over a period of weeks sometimes several times a day. I finally bit the bullet and took it back to the store who shipped it off the Lenovo repair centre in Sydney. Despite conslusive video footage time and date stamped, lenovo repair centre reckon they couldn't find much wrong (LOL) however did say that the reasonfor the constant shutdowns would be a heatsink related issue. I was advised by Lenovo Repairs that what they did in the end was completely replace, re-seat and re-position a brand new heatsink with all new thermal paste and sent the machine back. The PC ran smoothly no isues for 6 weeks then all of a sudden 3 days ago then same thing as the first time started happenign all over again. Just been looking at crucial.com/uk located the model but is says it has one slot for the RAM is 32MB non-removable, but then offers 64MB and 128MB to be purchased. eg: click here So what happens if you take out the non-removable memory and insert new RAM cheers

Hi all,I have been given (lucky me!) a Sigma SI laptop. It seems to have an overheat problem and a super noisy fan.I want to get in and at least get rid of all the dust and probably renew the fan.I've never been inside a laptop before so, proceeding with caution I took all the screws out of the bottom and tried to prise the two halves apart. As the case wouldn't give up without a struggle I have put the screws back and am looking for advice!!Any ideas, links and or advice? Many thanks, Epirb.

Answer:Getting inside me laptop!

I don't know this particular laptop but the key to opening a laptop is usually through the keyboard. Look for screws or clips in the keyboard area that may allow it to pop up. Once the keyboard is released there are usually screws underneath holding the rest together.

my son found his laptop sitting in pool of water on the desktop! Doesn't know how it happened. We set it outside with bottom sideways in the sun to ventilate but it still doesnt want to start. I was unable to remove the bottom to further ventilate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Moisture inside Laptop

You should not attempt to start it for several days. If you've already done so, it is possible that you have shorted something.

Remove the battery. I would set it the way you've already done and place a fan near it to speed up evaporation. If you can get the hd out easily, remove that too; if you can't figure out how to remove it, let it in.
You will also want canned air. In a few days, when the fan has evaporated most of the moisture, use canned air in the openings and at the keyboard.

I cant really unscrew mine, I guess I could, but I am worried I might break something....

My point is, should you try and clean inside, remove dust etc?

Id like to do this but I have a toughbook which is exactly that, tough to undo....

Thanks for all help!!!!

Answer:Do you clean the inside of your laptop?

I use compressed air to remove dust, etc for the vents. (I use very short, quick bursts at an angle so as to not drive the dirt deeper into the unit.) I'll also wipe down the battery compartment and undo the cover to the memory modules to see if there's any dust build up. This may give some other ideas:

Hi All, I looked in this forum for a solution to this exact problem others had but couldn't find any.  As with others, my CD went in, somehow got stuck all the way inside, and can't be extracted.  The drive opens, empty.  I checked for a screw on the bottom (based on an answer I saw) but didn't see any.  Any other suggestions for this model?  It's a ProtectSmart -- I didn't see any product number. Thanks ahead for your help  Julie

Hi everyone I have a Windows 8 hp laptop that is about a year old and for the past few months I have been hearing a weird rattling sound Inside it it happens most often when my laptop gets tilted  or put on an angle like on my legs or when I let it rest on the top part to stop the fan from over Heating when I leave. It sounds almost like there is a bit of plastic or metal inside it that keeps hitting the inside of my laptop somewhere but I don't know where. I think it might be inside the fan. If it is inside the fan how do you open the fan so I can get it out? Sorry if this is hard to understand I'm Not very  good at writing this kind of stuff :p all help would be appriciated

Answer:Rattling inside laptop??

Easiest method of figuring out what it is would be top open it. That is if you feel comfortable enough to do so without damaging it. Its probably a piece of plastic although if it was a small screw which then came into contact with electronics it could kill the system. If it were my computer, I would open it and remove the stray piece vs taking risk of killing it if it shorts or stops a fan etc.

Answer:Need to Clean a laptop Inside?

It's very possible your laptop has a dust problem. The inside of a laptop doesn't have very much room compared to a desktop. So all of the major components like motherboard, hard drive, RAM, GPU, etc are shoved together with very little room to spare. There's usually one small fan that's supposed to circulate the air to keep things cool. The least little dust build up can seriously affect that air flow resulting in overheating. This article gives some suggestions on how to clean your laptop. If you google "how to clean a laptop" you can find several more articles.

How to clean your laptop of dust and dirt | News | TechRadar

You shouldn't have to take anything apart other than the access covers on the bottom of the machine. A can of compressed air should be able to blow out much of the dust buildup. Use short bursts of air or you may find the liquid propellant squirting out. That would be very bad. Also, always keep the can upright and don't tilt it. Same problem - liquid propellant could be released.

You should always keep the laptop on a hard flat surface so the vents don't get blocked by a pillow, blanket, or even your lap. Air flow is critical. And many people use a laptop cooling pad to help circulate air around the machine.

I was browsing Internet and suddenly my laptop shutted down abruptly. So, I took it to Lenovo service center and when the service center executive unscrewed the back there were ants all over and built a colony. They basically invaded laptop. Executive said to give laptop for observation and told after 2 days to call a number then he would exactly say the problem. My question is Will this be covered under warranty?

Answer:G50-70: Ants inside laptop

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Your question about warranty coverage would be best asked of the service center or found in the warranty documentation for your model.  In my opinion, a warranty is there to cover problems related to manufacture or design.  In your situation, the problem was caused by an environmental influence which would be outside of Lenovo's control and thus not covered.

If you happened to have the additional accidental warranty coverage this may cover the repair, but again I would check your documentation or ask the service provider.

Hi guys,

I have had my toshiba satelite A500 laptop for.. since it came out basically,

I have never opened the laptop previously, since November last year, I have been having difficulties with my laptop, And about 90% of the time the laptop will shut of anytime between 2 minutes to 20 minutes of playing a game.

It doesnt seem to shut off if im browsing internet, chatting on MSN, or even watching a movie. It only seems to shut of when im playing games, Which i do on my night shifts.

I have a cooling fan underneith my laptop and it doesnt do much of a difference. I have monitored the temperature on Toshiba Pc Health Monitor. And it says CPU temperature 42-50% normally. When playing games the highest ive seen it is 81% which is in degrees C.

I have been told to use canned air, But im not 100% were to put it, And ive been told to open the laptop up and do it myself - which im not confident at doing at all without a instruction manual, Which i dont have.

Sorry for the massive page, But i thought the more details the better.

Anyone got any suggestions? Ive browsed about but have not found much, Only "use canned air" But i still dont know were to put it, And cant find out about opening this.

Sorry guys for the trouble,
And im new to the forum Hello My name is Dan.

Answer:Laptop overheating, dust inside I think

Hello Dan, welcome to TechSpot! :grinthumb

There is a little "Hello all!"-forum here somewhere called "Introduce Yourself", I think you'll find it most appealing .

-------------------------------

Addressing the problem:

Cleaning the PC is not difficult. However something may still break the first time around, so please be gentle!

Now, as everybody told you previously, using canned air is the best way to go. Touching the components with your bare hands may shock them with electrostatic discharge (or ESD for short), and that's sure to fry out things in notime.

As for the temperature, by saying up to 81% in degrees Celsius - you mean 81 degrees Celsius right? If so, then that PC is definitely overheated :haha: .

If you want to clean out the dust, here is a short explanation on how to:

Do not worry about opening the PC. Just be cautious regarding these things:
1. If the laptop's lid doesn't come off right away, do not use excessive amounts of force. Find what's obstructing it, and gently remove the obstacle if possible.
(You know, I actually sawed a *laptop in half once... I'm just saying - *a Toshiba Tecra T9100)
2. Do not touch the electrical components with your hands directly, or with a metal/conductive object. You might funnel ESD into the PC, which may ruin it for sure. There are "ESD bracelets" that prevents ESD altogether. Plastic "surgery styled" gloves will also prevent ESD.

So, my laptop has been freezing. But not exactly randomly. I can run AIM for roughly 5-10min without a freeze-up (aka, nothing works/opens, but I can still move the mouse). OR I can open up firefox and it will run no problems on about half of the sites/forums I usually browse. And lastly, I have tried to scan the computer several times, but it freezes up almost exactly halfway through (three times now), and then I can press the "Quarantine" button and it will freeze again halfway through deleting what's there (just tracking cookies).

I'm one of those people with a secondary computer, one for gaming, one for everything else. My laptop is that everything else computer, and it's quite annoying having to alt-tab out of my precious games. Worst case, I may resort to re-formatting.

If you need anymore information, I'd be happy to give it. I don't know the exact specs of the computer, as I really never cared what they were, being my secondary computer, and I can't open the system info without it freezing, so I did the best I could copying specs from a website then changing what I remembered. At what point do you feel that overheating will become a problem with a laptop in a protective case?

Of course G2 [off] is safe and I'm fairly certain that S4 will be safe because it's using almost no power, but should I worry about leaving the laptop in S3 or maybe even idle while in it's case? (for no more than an 15 minutes).

I don't think it's dirt as these screens are assembled in a dust free environment, it could be the dead pixels, I would suggest you to ignore it, when it becomes intolerable just replace the screen.

I'm in the Navy and getting ready to go on a ship...so you can imagine how that goes. I want a good gaming laptop to use in my time off to keep me busy. I would like to play Oblivion(single-player, time killer) and I can get into FPS and RTS games especially if there are others involved in the action too. And how often should it be done? thx

I know the keyboard with canned air is easy, but how bout inside?

Answer:How do you go about removing dust inside laptop?

Compressed air works well.
Do it outdoors if you can and don't wear a white shirt. Especially if there is a lot of dust in there.
Sometimes the dust can stick and harden on the comonents.
A detail paint brush with nylon bristles works well to get this off.

Important!!!

Before you go inside the box, ground yourself with an anti static wristband!!

If you don't, you could fry some components with a static discharge.

Then your problems are bigger than a dusty computer.

With the OEM drive still inside the laptop, is it possible to boot off the SSD while it's attached in an external enclosure via USB? Is there any way to tell that the external is being used and not the OEM drive? For some reason the image I restore is stuck in a automatic repair loop and I have no clue what to do. Thanks

The gray color stuff was between the wires. I guess the stuff works for proventing electric shocks among those components. Can you guys tell what the gray stuff is? I look like normal silicone. Also please let me know where I can get that?

Here is picture.

Thanks.

A laptop has a built in graphics card with the motherboard so the card that your dad gave to you is no good. You can try to reset the bios and see if that fixes it, but you would have to look on the hp website to see how to do it. Otherwise you can try and get a new motherboard from hp, but most likely a new laptop is your only choice.

I have a Dell C600 Laptop with Windows 2000 on it and would like to clean it up to get more speed out of it, also considering expanding the memory. I have a good laptop also, but use this one mainly for downloading FLAC. files using Burst. Is there a good program I can run to erase all the stuff in the computer without wiping out my Windows 2000, I dont think I have the installation disk anymore. If not, can I make a back-up disc and then just clean everything out and start all over, this poor thing just runs slow and has had a ton of programs loaded on it over the years.

Thanks,

Answer:Cleaning up a Laptop

No, not really, I believe, but Revo uninstaller is a possibility. You still have to uninstall programs one by one, though. You'll find a number of other cleaning possibilities in there as well. http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html

Hi everybody,
my laptop is severely infected by trojan and virus.
It pops windows promoting sex and casino sites all the time.
I've ran ad-aware and spybot. Cleaned all I can.
Scanning with housecall.trendmicro.com told me that I'm infected with:

JAVA_BYTEVER.A
HTML_ IFRMEXP.GEN
TROJ_STARTPAG.AK
TROJ_ADCLICK.B
TROJ_MEDIKET.A

Question: Laptop cleaning

So, I know I can use compressed air on my computer to clean it out, but can I use compressed air on a laptop ?
I plan on taking the back off and cleaning all the dust out of the laptop to make it quieter, I just dont want to hurt the lappy.

Answer:Laptop cleaning

Yep, sure can. There nothing in there that can be damaged by a compressed air. I don't know if turning a fan with compressed air damages it or not but just in case I hold a fan down and prevent it from spinning when I dust it. So if you see any fans, try to prevent them from spinning when you dust out your laptop.

Question: laptop cleaning

My wife has a Dell Inspiron laptop. We have never owned a laptop before and she was wondering how to clean the screen? Any advice?

Answer:laptop cleaning

Hi there - many places like Staples sell anti-static "wipes" that are designed to clean screens. Whatever you do - do NOT use Windex or any kind of spray on a laptop screen. (I've had bad experience in this!) The spray can drip down and cause the screen to go bad.

Good luck!

Question: Cleaning Laptop

I have a Gateway MX3414. I recently bought what I thought was compressed air, but it was electronics cleaning stuff. It says not to use it on anything energized. I was wondering if I could use it to cean out the intake and other holes in my laptop.

Answer:Cleaning Laptop

Quoteelectronics cleaning stuffSure you can use it.  You could also use hairspray or a garden hose or olive oil or ether or spray-paint....  None of them will actually be any good at cleaning out your laptop orifices but you could try.Get with it, you know that compressed air is the proper tool so go get some.  Follow the Gateway instructions on cleaning the notebook, blowing accumulated dirt into the works might not do it much good.   Be especially careful to stop the cooling fan, if fitted, from rotating at high speed when the compressed air hits the fan impeller. Oh, and welcome to the Computer Hope forums.Good luck.

Hi all

I'm just cleaning up my laptop, and I've run a few scans, defrag etc. Everything seems to be fine, however I have noticed I've got 42 processes running and I'm not sure what most of them are.

This isn't urgent, as I appreciate that other people have got major problems going on.

Here's my Hijack This log...

Question: Cleaning my Laptop

How would I go about cleaning the fan on my laptop? I was told I could use compressed air to clean it out, but w/o spending money is there another way of doing it?

I need it cleaned because the laptop overheats when im playing games btw.

Answer:Cleaning my Laptop

Eh, have you tried blowing real hard?

Really! Blow as hard as you can through a straw and it will direct and compress the air a bit and should work better.

Just be careful not to pass-out.

It should work to a point and get rid of most of the dust. It make take a few rounds depending on the enclosure.

Realized around 1/1 that Microsoft Sec Essentials virus definition not updated since October. Tried to manually update... unable (update process stalls). Ran full scan but MSE ran a quick scan instead, and somehow updated the virus def'n to 12/31 (which is not right since I didn't even realize the problem until after that date). When I try manually updating, it still stalls.

Also, windows update states last update was 11/11 (which I see that many updates were done on that date), but warned that the most recent check was 2/8 (9 months back). Also unable to manually update (update stalls).

Answer:Cleaning Kid's Laptop

I'm happy to say and also sorry to say your problems are not due to malware. Your logs are all clean. You are just having problems like many other people have run into where Windows just does not want to update. Some people think it could be some particular Windows Update that just causes it to break. I have run into this myself while helping friends fix their PCs that they thought were infected and they were clean. The only issues is the Windows update ( including MSE ) will never complete. There are a variety of different fixes that people propose, but my experience is that in most case, none of the fixes help. I fixed one of my friends by reinstalling and it worked fine for a few days and then all of a sudden it got into the same state again. Windows Update has always been a very buggy software that is prone to getting broken for may reasons. Sometimes it breaks due to third party software especially registry cleaners or performance tweaking tools.

You can try posting in our Software Forum. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones that one of the fixes helps.
