I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Well about a week ago my laptop keyboard started to act funny when I tired to backspace random signs, or random actions would happen, when I tried to use the space bar it wouldn't give me a space it might give me a d or a / or c, n and when I pressed enter it wouldn't work either then a few days ago the letters started not to work either. They all started to do random things like H might disconnect my Internet or it might Brighton the screen and I have tried every single thing I read about and nothing sometimes my keyboard works perfectly fine and sometimes it gets crazy, I scanned my laptop to see if it was a virus but nothing, I looked to see if it was the keyboard not working but the computer said that the devise was working perfectly fine. I have a Dell Inspiron M5010 Windows Home Premium 7 I have also pretty much uninstalled basically everything I didn't need or use on my laptop that I have downloaded to see if it might have been one of those but it wasn't. I really need help. Thank you

Answer:keyboard on laptop typing wrong letters

That is most likely a virus, you need to run a full scan with your antivirus and make sure it isn't compromised. I would also recommend you move this to the malware forum, then you will get it touch with people that are certified to help you with this.

I have the Gateway NE56R12u 15.6-Inch Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

A few drops of water was spilled onto my keyboard (I don't think the water got down into the laptop... as far as I could tell the water landed on top of the keys, but I could be wrong) and when I went to clean it, I didn't think ahead and turn it off before cleaning up the spill. So many keys were pressed and now the keyboard is not functioning correctly. When I press the majority of the keys, they will either add other letters/symbols, or they will trigger Windows shortcuts.

As an example..
B = "B (it also brings up the right click menu) (this will also bring up this: symbol as well as times)
O = 7i7o0
L = *L{YK

M = HM

k= yk*

j = brings up googlechrome downloads

i = takes curser to the start of the text

The space key types b ' and brings up the right click menu.

7 brings up the "open file" shortcut

and so on

Some keys are working properly: a c d e f g q r s t v w x z

I browsed google a little to see if anyone else has had this problem. A big fix was pressing the FN button and the NumLock at the same time. That didn't work. Which, I doubted it would since my laptop has a full keyboard.

Is it possible that it's stuck on some sort of sticky keys or toggle keys setting?

Most of the letters come out ok, but some of the keys writes wrong letters e.g. key with letter 'I' gives '5', 'O' gives '6', etc. And it's not the problem of keyboard layout, it's U.S. English and never been changed to another one. Problem persist in each application including command prompt. OS is XP Pro. Norton didn't detect any virus. Anyone has a clue?

My mother's computer started having issues with the keyboard, recently. I'll say it how i see it, but obviously, i might be missing something.

When typing the letter q on the keyboard, "qt" comes up. w and e are fine, r types "re". This happens with two different keyboards. I brought by my (this) keyboard, and it worked fine, but i only tried for a minute. On her computer, i tried both a ps2 and usb keyboard (native for both, no adapters).

Right now, if i try to login, when i click on a user, it fills in the password field (as if there was a stuck key) and tells me the caps lock is on. Capslock button does turn it off, but it did not look like backspace was doing anything. The bios did not complain of a stuck button. Safe mode (i happened to try with networking) has the same issue. No issue using the keyboard before windows loads.

Using teamviewer from my computer to hers is tough. I can hit capslock with sometimes works, keys sometimes work and sometimes don't, if it types in two letters, i can use the mouse to highlight one (to overwrite) when continuing. With a lot of effort and time i can login. Clicking icons on the desktop does not work, from the start menu does.

I tried hitting the helper menu to get the on screen keyboard for logging on. The first time i tried, it came up and worked. Now the button doesn't do anything.

I went into Device Manager (early on, when i could still do things) and deleted the keyboard. It made me reboot, but didn't se... Read more

Answer:Keyboard typing wrong letters

Just tried again via TeamViewer. I can delete in the password field, but it acts as if there is a stuck key. (This is different than the last time i tried.) The form with the option for the on screen keyboard now does come up, but the keyboard is an empty frame and the mouse cursor (while over the frame) shows the circle of waiting.

This is weird. It's like Schrodinger's cat or something. The problem changes every time i look at it!

Hello- After repairing my screen, Averatec returned my 5110P.Upon
return it has a keyboard problem. Averatec tells me that even though
the warranty ran out while in thier possession they cannot help me.

Here is the problem-

u types j
\ types nothing
d types x
f types nothing
g types v
j types u
x types f
v types g

Here are my attempted fixes-

1. NUM lock is off
2. HKEY_USERS/Default/Control panel/Keyboard has proper values
3. Updated drivers
4. Deleted/reinstalled drivers
5. Completly reinstalled OS (xp Pro) with start up disks

My Keyboard properties reads:

Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key)
Device type: Keyboards
Manufacturer: (Standard Keyboards)
Location: Plugged into Keyboard

If I go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Accessibility/On-Screen
Keyboard, the on-screen keyboard types properly

The physical keyboard types the same whether in DOS or windows

I don't have an external keyboard, so I haven't tried that yet.

I believe the "Japanese" refers to manufacturer and not Language
because, I belive I have seen that keyboard for sale in systems that
are targeting english consumers.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks much,
Brandon

Have you tried updating the driver?

If that doesn't work, you could try remapping your keyboard with a program called KeyTweak(http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/)

This has been happening every other day for me recently where I will be typing and my keyboard will randomly start typing the wrong letters or pressing certain keys will open the menu bar, but my computer to sleep or just type completely random letters. I've googled it once before and found that I should change the settings in control panel > regional and language settings which worked for me once but lately it doesn't.

I've even purposely added a foreign language and then re added my normal one (UK) but hasn't helped, it was already on the proper settings anyway. The last two times it has happened was on the night and left my keyboard unplugged, the next day I plugged my keyboard back into the tower while the computer was still loading up and it has been working fine now and did the same again last night. I don't know why it does this? Also google suggested a FN key but my keyboard doesn't have one.

Answer:KeyBoard Buttons are typing the wrong letters

Did you set your keyboard language to US or UK.
Go into the control panel and click Regional and Language Options, click the Languages tab, click Details button, then check in the box to make sure English (United Kingdom) and under Keyboard you have United Kingdom. If this is what you prefer.

I've been experiencing something VERY strange with my keyboard (M/S "Elite" split keyboard) and had assumed it was failing but today I happened to use it on a different machine and discovered that the keyboard is NOT the problem (I'm using it now connected to a notebook).

Here's what happens:

In certain apps (noticeably Outlook Express) the letter "i" seems to be problematic. When typing a word containing an "i", like "Chief", the word will often come out with the "i" and "e" transposed (no, it's NOT my typing) and, very often, after having typed all the letters of a word including an "i" - like "Michael" - the "m" will appear on the screen and then nothing else - even though I've struck all the letters - and after a split-second I'll see "Mchaeli" on the screen.

Also, after invoking All Caps, the first time I use the "i" key it's still lower case. Upon the second use, it's upper case as it should be. Then, after deactivating All Caps, the first time I hit "i" it's still upper case, even though it shouldn't be.

The upper case problem has now extended to "C" and "O", as well.

What could this be? I know it sounds strange, but I'm hoping someone out there has seen something like this.

TIA,

Jay Palmer

Since new and under warranty, why not contact Dell? They should be able to help you and determine if it's just something as simple as having the wrong keyboard selected in language options or a hardware problem. If the hardware is the problem, they should fix or replace it.

I have an Acer Chromebook and recently spilled some water on it.  In my panic, I quickly wiped down the keyboard and all was still well and working.  I noticed then that whenever I tried to type anything, completely different letters or numbers or random symbols would show up.  I'm guessing that as I wiped down the keys and pressed them down at once, it did something to change the keyboard.  And to add to this problem, I can't even sign into my laptop as it's password protected, and I can't type my password in correctly.  Is this something that I can fix myself easily?

Hi linscrawf,

Here is an article with 2 ways of performing a powerwash before signing into Chrome. http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27649

This should reset the device (removing any unsaved data) and any potential settings or key combo's that you may have it.

It still requires some keystrokes, but they shouldn't also intiate other keystrokes. If they are, or after performing the powerwash you still have this issue it would likely indicate that the liquid spill is affecting the circuity below and multiple keystrokes are being detected.

I hope this helps,Cory

Ok, so I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, but I wanted Professional because I heard it takes advantage of the dual core thing when Home doesn't, so I installed Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005 and then upgraded to Service Pack 2. I didn't do anything on the computer before upgrading to Service pack 2, except register the computer and things, which I found out my problem. When entering my Email, instead of the @ sign coming up, the " sign came up.. here is a list of the keys that shouldn't be coming out when the button(s) is/are pressed(Note, I have an American Keyboard and an American copy of Windows):

Shift+2="
Shift+3=
Shift+`=
Shift+'[email protected]
Not this / but the other slash=#
Shift+Not this / but the other slash=~

Is there anything known to fix this? Because this is getting very annoying, and I just want my keyboard to be normal lol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,

When I try and type into Internet Explorer (or Google Chrome and Firefox) I don?t get the letter or symbol that I type.
For instance when I typed ?a? I got ?r? on screen and similarly ?w? gave ?t? and ?m? gave ?y?.
I then typed ?a? again and got ?u? on screen.  When I kept
hitting ?a? I got ?u, I, o, [? which is of course part of a progression along a querty keyboard!
When I type into a ?Word? document the problem does not occur nor does it when I type into an email.
Things that I have tried:

I have run a full scan of my anti-virus software, Zone Alarm (which is up to date.)I have scanned with Spybot, which found a whole load of things that I treated.I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it did not pick up anything.I have run my registry software ?Regzooka?
None of these actions have cured the problem.  What can I do to correct this?
I have Windows 7 with all of the latest updates downloaded.

IE version 11.0.9600.17041.  Update version 11.0.7

Answer:Keyboard types all the wrong letters etc. in Internet Explorer and other browsers

Hi,
1. close all open IE Windows.
2. Start>Programs>Accessories>system tools>Internet Explorer (noaddons)
this will start IE in noAddons....
If the problem disappears when running in no addons mode then it is being caused by one or more of your addons...since your other browsers are affected it is probably being caused by an addon that is common to all of your browsers...
Use the Tools>Manage Addons menu from IE to disable your Toolbar and BHO addons one at a time (restarting IE each time to see if disabling an addon fixes the issue)
or
Start>Control Panel>Action Center>Internet - will list any known malware or incompatible addons.
or
Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced tab, uncheck "enable third-party browser extensions".... restart IE for the full changes to take effect.
Start>Windows Update...... examine your optional updates lists for any driver updates (for your keyboard) and apply and install them.
You have a number of anti-virus programs installed on your computer...
You only need one.... having multiple av products installed will slow your computer and may cause errors....
Spybot S&D is not suitable for Win7 and higher... it uses black lists for url's and slows down the web browser considerable.
The AV products that you have installed are probably free versions, that do not have up-to-date malware lists... Consider purchasing a license from the AV vendor or

My son has a Dell Inspiron running Windows Vista. His computer was fine and he made no changes to it whatsoever. He came to me very upset claiming that his keyboard was not working properly.
I took a look at it and sure enough, it will not type the following letters:c,h,l,t, ***U,v. Since his password contained the letter "L," once he logged out he was no longer able to log back in.
He asked me to reinstall his operating system. I have done so, except now I'm on the screen where it asks me to type a username and password - and guess what? It still won't type those letters! I even tried the virtual keyboard - it will not type those letters using it either. However, when you press the "U" key (whether on the keyboard or the virutal keyboard) a window pops up titled: Ease of Access, and it gives me the option of hearing text onscreen, making items larger, etc.
I cannot even begin to imagine how to fix this. Please, if any of you know what to do, help me please??

Answer:Both laptop keyboard and virtual keyboard will not type certain letters

OMG! I have to add this additional information:
I just accidentally pressed the "shift" key when I tried to type an "L." It typed the "L!!" But it still will not type a lower case "L." When I press the "Caps Lock" key, it has no effect - it still will not type the letter L. This is the case with all of the above noted letters. All of them will type only if I press the "shift" key.

Answer:laptop keyboard not typing double letters or

First try System restore to any date before the incident (preferably a few days or a week). If that does not work, uninstall the keyboard in device manager and restart, that should allow windows to reinstall the drivers. The cat probably hit a strange combination of keys like ctrl+Shift+something else and you could look all day and not find the options to correct it directly. One of these should help. In the future, put the system into sleep if you walk away for a few minutes (or close the lid), Hibernate if for longer, and shut down for hours or overnight. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

this keyboard is very unforgiving. I have have to slow my typing speed by at least half and I still miss letters and spaces in everything I type, it is VERY annoying. Is there any fix for this problem. It is as if this keyboard was designed for "hunt and peck" people.I even had to go back and add a letter (two letters) in this short message.... grrrrr. I should add that I have tried adjusting the speed in controlpanel but it isno help. If I don't strike the key precisely in the middle it will likely not register a letter, symbol, or space. The spacebar is expecially maddening, if I press the lower edge of it, I get nothing. I have never had this problem before on a computer.  Any help??? Julien

This has got to be the weirdest problem. E540 Thinkpad, Windows 7, 64 bit. In order to use the zero, arenthesis above the zero, the dash & line under, "P" cas and lower case, colon & semicolon, quotes key, question mark key slash I have to kind of twist up a corner of the entire laptop; where changes from time to time, used to be I had to hysically move the screen around, another time: the back far right of the laptop. Lately, I've had to kind of bend /press the left or right corners closest to me. Sometimes, the keys will work for awhile. Oddest thing. Same, if plugged in or battery, caps or lower case. There's no yellow next to keyboard in Device Manager. There is some resource conflicts though, can't remember how I stumbled on that.KEYBOARD SAYS:Input/Output Range 0064 - 0064 used by: Motherboard resourcesMOTHERBOARD RESOURCES SAYS CONFLICTING DVICE LIST:Input/Output Range 0062 - 00E1 used by:Direct memory access controllerProgrammable interrupt controllerSystem CMOS/real time clockMicrosoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded ControllerStandard PS/2 Keyboard   Any thoughts?

Answer:My laptop keyboard is driving me crazy - keeps missing out letters and spaces!

Sounds like you need a new keyboard.

Try a different OS to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, it is a hardware problem.

at random times today, my keyboard/laptop has been playing up. the functions of the keys have gone weird.. some of them include: when i press escape it switches between two windows, i can't type anything, double clicking on an icon on my desktop opens up the program's properties, pressing enter full-screens some programs.. and probably others i don't know about.the only way i have been able to fix this temporarily is to restart my laptop. but the thing is it starts to happen again a few minutes after turning on my computer again. i really can't stand having to keep restarting it! have i been accidentally making it go like this without knowing? or is there actually something wrong with my keyboard?

Answer:something's wrong with my keyboard/laptop

The first thing that pops to mind is water damage/a drop-but seeing as rebooting does momentarily solve the problem, it might well be a virus. Before we go into virus scanning, can you plug in a USB keyboard and see if the problem persists?Windows already has the drivers installed for keyboards and mice, so drivers shouldn't be the problem. Can you think of anything that might have caused this problem?

Well I got my Asus s96j, and life has been great.

Until,

The keyboard starting getting things wrong.

When I type an o I instead get a 3. This happends with about half of the keys.

Being this is the first real laptop I have owned, I started flipping out. What if I have to send it back!!

But before I really flip out. I need to rule out a few things, of course.

1. Can someone point me in the direction of a standard windows keyboard driver? Im currently using the standard ones, but heck this might work.

2. Is there some sort of remapping program that I can use, to maybe correct this?

3. If not, can you buy new keyboard inserts for laptops?

Problem is with a Toshiba M645 running Win 7 Home Premium, IE10, Firefox & Chrome. The problem is it displays pages incorrectly. The most common problem is an area has a background image or color and instead of seeing it there will be what appears to be chain link, stars or scrolling symbols. Sometimes clearing temp files and cache will clear it up for a short time.I have run virus scans, malware scans tried checking in Safe mode to isolate the video driver. Scans did find a couple trojans and some adware, checking after pages would appear to be normal again. Sometimes it would be fine until re-started or it might just take a short period of usage to start displaying pages wrong again. Any help would be appreciated

I connected regular keobard just for the test and works fine.

Is this a keyboard problem? (Seller assures 100% work ) Or rather computer system?

What eventually I can check?

Hi,suddenly the laptop started typing wrong words. I checked keyboard layout, it was English US. I even tried Ctrl + Shift and Alt + Shift, but nothing is happening. If I type small letters it types Capital letters, sometimes the same type numbers....if I type 1,2,3,4 it types !,@,#,$ respectively. Even though Numslock is also on.Even I tried external USB keyboard in the laptop, it is the same problem. At last, even I formatted the laptop and installed windows 7 again, same problem.

Hi everyone, newbie here. Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong spot. I joined this forum to get help with another problem but after reading the posting instructions I'd better do some homework before getting into that little mess I've made .

In the meantime, I've pulled out an inherited (but brand new) laptop and there is a glitch in the keyboard.

The @ key types " and vice versa.

Because the laptop was probably bought 1 to 3 years ago (and I don't know where from), I won't bother trying to fix it under warranty.

Any ideas please?

Many thanks in advance.

You possibly have English UK/English U.S. problem.

On Task Bar where it say EN, right click and Settings
(if not there, Control Panel - Region and Language - Keyboards and Languages - Change Keyboards)
Click Add - Find the appropriate keyboard in the list.
Change Default input language above to new language you have added
Remove the old one below box (Installed Services)

I am trying to connect a Y700-17ISK laptop running Windows 10 to a projector with a 1024x768 (XGA) native resolution. Even though the Windows display settings are set to send a 1024x768 extended desktop, the picture that is actually output from the HDMI port is 1920x1080 (Full 1080p HD). This causes odd scaling issues on the projector. All of my Googling has only turned up hundreds of pages of people that have the opposite problem. Any ideas?

Any help to correct this problem would be appreciated.
I don't know if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. Whenever I press certain letters I get a numeric stroke. For example:

m=0
j=1
k=2
l=3
u=4
i=5
o=6

The only reason I'm able to type this is because I've connected another keyboard up to the laptop.

Answer:Solved: Fujitsu laptop keyboard showing wrong characters

Most likely you have some kind of number lock feature on. It's so you can use the letters as you would a number pad on a standard keyboard.

Try to find a key on your keyboard labeled "Num Lock" and press it (you may have to hold down something like an "Fn" key while pushing the Num Lock button).

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

I thought I would share my recent adventure with a 3000 N500 I have. The laptop was special ordered with Xp Pro on it. I uninstalled and installed Ubuntu, worked great. At some point my wife spilled some soda onto the page up and down keys, resutling in those keys not working. Recently I purchased her another latop and decided to reinstall Windows Xp Pro on the N500 for use with some camera software I have. I decided to go ahead and order another keyboard from Amazon, for 21 bucks. I wiped the drive and used an OEM Xp Pro to reinstall windows. I was having some issues with sound and modem drivers and decided to go ahead and install SP3 on it to help out with the high def install of drivers. That worked great, but when I recieved the new keyboard Tuesday and install it, I noticed that some dual number letter keys were inputting numbers. I googled and was brought here where a number of posters stated several programs might be the cause. I searched and these programs WERE'NT installed on this, due to a clean install of OEM windows. This took me back to suare one, why. I'm very proficiant in PC's having built many custom machines and assisted others in repair. I decided to test the keyboard by using an flash drive with Linux on it. The keyboard worked like a champ, so that narrowed the issue to windows pr software inside it. Booting back to windows I started thinking that possibly an update inside SP3. I removed SP3 and rebooted and the keyboard worked great, no errors.... Read more

Hi everyone, my laptop's keyboard recently started behaving oddly, e.g. when I try to type the letter 'p' a '*' appears. Same also true for the '/' key, when I press it a '+' appears.

This is probably something very simple, but I can't figure out what I've done. Numlock is off, stick keys are off and the language is set to my own. I'm using Windows 7 and it's a Sony Vaio laptop.

Many thanks in advance 😊

Answer:Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

Hold down the FN key and press Numlock key.
If this just started happening, then do a system restore to a time before this happened. You can also use an external USB Keyboard or the on screen keyboard and see if that has the same effect,
You can also go to the Sony Vaio drivers page Sony eSupport - Drivers & Software Updates - Select a Model and download the updated Touchpad and Chipset driver for your model.

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

Ok, hopefully somebody can help me out here.

So I had one of my laptops plugged into an external monitor, untill tonight when I decided to take it off the monitor to fool around with it. Bad idea apparently.

After unplugging it from the monitor, the display on the laptop was a blank screen (this is what usually happens when I first unplug it). Normally, I press the Fn key and the f4 button to toggle back the display to the actual laptop screen. However, for some reason this wasn't working and I couldn't figure out why. So I press the Caps Lock key to see if the icon on the keyboard lights up just to be sure the keyboard isn't broken. Low and behold the button wasn't lighting up, and my keyboard is broken.

So now I'm stuck with a laptop that has no display all because of a broken keyboard. I do have an external keyboard, but there is no way to toggle display from that. At least none which I can find. I have tried plugging the laptop back into the monitor and pressing the display toggle button on the monitor itself, and haven't had any luck with getting a display.

The laptop has bigger issues besides the display (reboots itself during startup), and I was just about to reinstall windows/perform a system restore on it. But obviously I can't do anything without a display.

If there is anyone out there who isn't completely confused by my explanation, and has at least an idea of what to do or where to start, please let me know.

Apparently there is an easy fix for the above.
Just hold the "fn" key and the "numlock" key at the same time.

My T410 will do some crazy things, such as typing nothing when you type "e", then suddenly typing a string of numbers and letters, something like "6lsxcv8t". My 7 year old XP laptop has just received EasyBCD and a new partition with W7.I now realise that the new partition has stolen a letter F:\ which has always been used for a special partition on my external Hard drive, and I want it to stay that way.I believe drive letters are only held in the registry and have no effect outside the O.S. in question, therefore W7 will not be affected by me changing the letter which XP uses to view it.Please confirm it is safe, or explain my error.RegardsAlan.

So I'm trying to get a Laptop working for a friend, and there are many weird issues...

Clicking 'Start' does nothing. Can tell I clicked it, but nothing happens.

Right clicking a file/folder only has options: open, *blank space?*, runas, Norton AntiVirus, *another blank space that should say 'send to'*

I can't copy/paste anything unless from cmd

Click and drag to desktop does nothing

Nothing pops up when I click something ending in '...' example: When in regedit, 'File>Export...' clicking export does nothing

No drive letters or names of drives? If in 'Computer' there are no drive names/letters, so just have to guess

That's all I can think of right now...
Same issues if in Safe Mode

Scanning with MalwareBytes right now, 3 objects so far...

Other thoughts?

Thanks!!

I had Windows XP Pro installed on my laptop, then I used Partition Magic to convert some free space into a new partition. I installed Linspire on the new partition, allowing it to configure GRUB for dual-booting. This worked fine, but I decided that I didn't want Linspire anymore, so I formatted that partition from within Windows and rebooted. I used the recovery console on the WinXP cd to run fixboot and fixmbr, then restarted. This worked in my testing of other various Linux distros, but this time I got an error: "NTLDR is missing"

I did some Googling and searching here, but I found nothing that helped with my situation. After some looking around I discovered that the driver letters for the two partitions had been switched somehow. In Windows, before I restarted, the Windows partition was C: and the newly reformatted smaller partition was E:. When I log into the recovery console the Windows install partition is shown as E:/ and the new, empty partition is C:/. Buh?

I've looked everywhere for a way to change the drive letters back to what they should be, but I haven't had any luck. The DISKPART command seemed the most likely solution, but the description in Microsoft's support documentation is apparently for a completely different program, since almost none of the features listed are available from the recovery console.

Does anyone know how I can fix the drive letters? Thanks.

Answer:Drive letters wrong after removing Linux dual-boot partition

Never had the need to do it, but have you tried
Control panel->admin tools->computer management->disk management, right-click the partition and select "Change drive letters and path" option?

Question: keyboard letters

Hi, i recently purchased my Omen from best buy and, although it works fine, im having an issue with the keyboard. The keys all work fine but when im typing a word that contains two of the same letters, sometimes it pauses and doesnt register that second letter (for example the word "letter", the second "t" sometimes doesnt register). its not windows because filter keys is disabled and ive tried testing it with another keyboard. is this something with the way the keyboard is made? just curious it does get annoying sometimes.

also the second letter will register if i wait about a spllt second to press it but if i type fast it and tap it a second time it doesnt register. this is with every key not just one.

Hello all,
I've a Dell notebook where the letters g and h do not operate.
I have just replaced the keyboard (that I would have thought the obvious problem) with no change.
All other keys work fine.
Anyone with any clues as to what next?
thanks in advance.

Are you sure the keyboard you bought hasnt been sold as it has the same problem ?

Other than that I would say that the socket the ribbon fits in may have a bad connection or if your ribbon runs from the board and plugs in the keyboard then that may be faulty.

I see on my latitude c600 that those 2 keys are above the thumbstick it may be this causing the problem, as well....

When I type online, some letters are randomly skipped unless I type very slowly and deliberately. I bought a new keyboard and have the same problem. I am an experienced typist. A Google search shows other people having the same problem. The problem occurs only online. What could be the cause and solution?

I running XP home SP2 IE7 and have hight speed cable connection.

My Pico laptop is just over 12 months old. . . and becoming increasingly invisible -- well: the keyboard certainly is. Though used only for an average of one hour a day, letters are fast disappearing, to the point that more than half the keyboard now has blank black keys.I've tried 'restoring' these with a Tippex pen but the results have been awful. And of course, being a laptop, it isn't (or I don't think it is) a case of popping out and buying a new keyboard.Does anyone here know of any source for replacement keyboard letters? (And has anyone else experienced this disappointing problem wth Pico laptops???)

Hi, on a standard keyboard you can lever the keys off. My one has spring? clips, but ask in comp shop first, to see if they stock them.Don

When I type a letter it sometimes doesn't register on the screen. It's not a particular letter -- it happens randomly. Any suggestions

Answer:Keyboard drops letters

Well I'd start by making sure its plugged in good and tight whiel the computer is off. Next would be to try another keyboard, keyboards do fail, especially if they've sustained abuse such as spills.

Ok, so I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, and I decided to try out Vista, so I went out and bought Windows Vista Ultimate RC2, and it was great and all, except that with only my 1 gig of ram, it sucked up my memory and I couldn't play any of my games that I have(I'm a gamer). I decided to use a copy of Windows that my sister got when she got her new computer, so I Uninstalled Vista and installed Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005 and then upgraded to Service Pack 2.

Shift+2="
Shift+3=?
Shift+`=?
Shift+'[email protected]
Not this / but the other slash=#
Shift+Not this / but the other slash=~

Is there anything known to fix this? Because this is getting very annoying, and I just want my keyboard to be normal lol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,
-Mr. Waffles

Answer:Keyboard letters aren't as they should be..

Hi Mr. Waffles and welcome to TSF !

Unfortunately installing a version of XP for which you own no license is illegal and according to the forum rules we can't help you any further. Stick with XP Home or Vista Ultimate, or buy an MCE license.

When typing some of the letters repeat. Example: thaat. The problem seems to be more with the letter A. I have changed keyboards but the problem still exist. I have set my repeat rate to the lowest setting. I use Office 2003 Professional Word. Is this problem in Windows 7, Office 2003 Professional, or what?
Thanks for any advise.

It is not Office 2003, I have that and it is not a Windows 7 problem.

This is a strange problem - my keyboard will not type on certain programs, and as far as I can deduce, it is only installed programs, such as Empire Earth, The Sims 2, and Pharaoh. I am trying to install Sims 2 and it will not let me put in the letters of the serial numbers, only the numbers show. I can only conclude that it isn't a problem with the programs because they are from different brands and some are installed, some are in the process of being installed.

Key points:
-Only the letters do not function (or show up), numbers are fine. Bksp also works.
-IE, notepad, Word, Publisher, etc. all work. It seems to be the programs that aren't Windows-based (created?) that don't work.

Things I've tried:
-Uninstalling driver for the keyboard (Intellitype Pro) and rebooting. Keyboard worked fine, but no solution.
-New keyboard, just plugged it in to my USB port and it's working fine. (This one is Microsoft Natural USB Keyboard) Except for it not typing letters on programs.
-Tried different USB ports. Didn't solve anything.
I have to say, I'm at a complete loss as to what the problem is, other than some bizarre configuration that Windows has spat at me...

Hello, I'm considering to purchase T420s Laptop via web-side.But I'd like to have some others letters (like Ukrainian or Russian) on keyboard besides standard English.Questions:* does anybody know if ti's possible to make such orders via web-site?* is there any other way to add such letters, but stickers? (personally I do not like idea of stickers, and, e.g. for Mac, there is possibility to make laser engraving of letters on keyboard. something like this for Lenovo?)

Answer:Letters other than English on the keyboard

I'm fairly certain if you order it in the Ukraine, you'll get a keyboard that matches your region.Otherwise, you can source the proper keyboard and simply replace it yourself.

when i'm trying to fix some typos it types over instead pushing over to the right the letters that are on the right.

Answer:Sometimes my keyboard types over letters to the right

Often editors keep track of the overstrike/insert mode that was in effect when you edit a particular file. When you change it afterwards in a different program, the editor may set it back how it was last time you used the editor or even edited the current file. Usually there';s a different cursor depending on which mode is set. Are you getting overstrike when the insert cursor is showing? That would be strange for sure. I don't remember seeing anything like that. At least not for some time.

What editor or program are you using when you get this?

Usually this happens to me a lot, and I wanted to let anyone who didn't know how to fix this problem; when your keyboard starts changing the keys into strange characters (*Like this - ?)

Just hit CTRL and SHIFT simultaneously.

I'm sure many of you already know this, but I just wanted to leak a lil tip out there for those who don't!

Answer:Screwed up keyboard letters.

I have never come across this problem but at least I will be prepared if I ever face it, thank you.

You do know that in your system specs, you claim to have 4086MB of ram, do you mean to say 4096MB? Because having 4086MB means that you have 3.99GB of ram, which is very unlikely.

Lately, I have been having trouble with certain keyboard letters not printing. Periodically, my z, exclamation point and the question mark letters don't print always unless I press the key several times. Upper and lower case doesn't seem to make a difference on the "z". It's not always with each letter each time. Some letters don't react while the others do. I have used my air can to clean them but to no avail. Could it be a virus of some kind I don't know if other letters are also doing it periodically. Any ideas? Can the keys be safely pried up, cleaned and replaced? Thx. Micromos

My Keyboard types " instead of AT Symbol. As in Email Address i.e john smith AT gmail.com. Also do not know how to get up symbol keyboard to use to input AT symbol. Do not have any other Keyboard input problems.

Answer:Importing letters from keyboard

That sounds like you've got the keyboard set up for United States instead of United Kingdom, or vice-versa, in Windows Regional Settings for the keyboard.

I recently reinstalled Vista on my laptop and every now and then when I type my keyboard will skips letters or the blinking cursor will suddenly jump to an area in the sentence previously and continue on. I'm not touching the mouse pad to move the cursor, only typing.

My keys are not sticky or show any signs of wear and tear (the laptop is under 6 months old).

This just all started after I re-installed windows and installed all the updated drivers.

Thanks!

Hey Guys,
I have a Dell XPS 15 and annoyingly when I first turn my computer on quite a few of the letters don't work at all (for 5-20mins) and then they randomly start working again fine.
Do you have any idea what this could be/how I can fix it?
Clearly it is not the keyboard itself but I assume maybe something to do with the bios?
Cheers!
Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 computer with the Dell keyboard that came with it. I've had it for almost 5 years. The past few weeks, I've had problems with the keyboard not inputting the letters I type. I'll type a sentence or 2 and look up to see only 1/2 of the first sentence is there.
This mostly happens when I'm posting on online forums. It has yet to happen when I'm working in Word.

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Barbara
