Question: Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Preferred Solution: Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

Hi, does anyone know of "Buffalo"s reliability? It seems my current external drive is about to give up. Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from Play.com for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

And also it does not appear in Computer,it was only appearing in the control panel. I tried disk management and other software to retrieve and solve this but it doesnt work. Can I still recover my file without going to retrieval company? can I still save my hard disk and use it again? thanks

Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like you are hosed. Suppose you could try the freezer trick, although I've never seen it work.

I have a buffalo 500gb external HD which I use mainly as a back up for photos/docs/vids etc., I have been deleting alot of uneccessary things on it and it now contains only 47gb of material, however when I click on the properties it is still showing 270gb free of 465gb, this means that there is still 195gb of material when in fact there is only 47gb of material on it in total - how can this be?? I have unplugged the buffalo drive, left it a while and replugged it in but its still showing (in the properties of the drive) that it has 270gb free of 465gb, very odd, thanks LAPTOPDUNCE

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

It was always fine, except for not being recognised a few months ago....it came back all by itself. So i was fine. I have a lot of data in it which is very important. So please give me any option other than formatting it.

When i rightclick on my My Computer and go to Manage > Disk Management and it shows me my Drive as F: 111.78 GB Healthy (Active).
But it does not display the name that i have given it (Rockin Ram) and when i try opening it, it says " F: is not acessible " The file drive is corrupted and unreadable ".

I have an internet connection with unlimited download, so please let me know if i need to download some software or install anything to repair it. I will do it, but please help me with this issue.

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,

I have a Buffalo ministation HD-PF500U2 500gb portable hard drive, and an ASUS laptop running Vista.

The problem is this: Whenever I plug my hard drive in, its light begins green, but turns yellow, and the computer makes absolutely no indication that it has recognised it. I went to device manager and saw a USB Mass Storage Device apparently recognised, but nothing in My Computer, and no way to access it. So I chose to 'uninstall' this Mass Storage Device on Device Manager (since Device Manager told me it was still plugged in, even when it wasn't) and then plugged my hard drive back in. I got the 'installing device driver software' message, and was told it was all fine, but the light went yellow again, and still no way to access the files.

I've tried microsofts MATS program for devices, and that tells me that some hardware changes have not been recognised, but that it has fixed the problem. It tells me this every time I run it.

Any advice?

Thanks all,

Bob

Hi Techguys

I get the BSOD with the Bad_Pool_Header error message when I connect a newly purchased external Buffalo 750GB Hard Drive to my PC. I have a HP Pavilion t3560.uk 3.4Mhz Pentium D Dual Core with 2048Mb RAM running Windows XP Home Edition SP3. The Drive worked fine until a couple of weeks in and still works fine in Windows Professional on the same machine and with a backup machine running Windows XP Home with SP3. The drive is a Buffalo 750GB USB 2.0 Drivestation. I have no problem running other Buffalo drives on the PC. The BSOD happens no matter whether the USB is attached at startup or plugged in after.
I have a copy of the BSOD details if that would help. I have about 200GB of multi media files on the drive and I need to solve this problem and get access to it again.
Any help would be really appreciated

I have heard that enterprise hard drives are more reliable than the standard hard drives in retail or consumer computers. I want to get an external hard drive for extra storage and backup purposes. My desktop and notebooks are the typical computers that are sold to retail customers. Will there be any problems having it access and drive an enterprise hard drive in an external hard drive case? I am thinking to get a fairly large size around 1T so I figure it would have its own power supply and not be powered by the USB drive. Data access will probably be via USB and/or eSata.

Answer:enterprise hard drive as an extra external drive-any problem with this idea

I believe Enterprise drives are more performance based then reliability based. The mechanics are still the same. Usually an enterprise application requires a fast drive, something like a 16MB cache and 15k RPMs is the norm, even if the drive is only 150GB, put those in RAID and you have a very fast access source for a large network.

There of course are slower, and larger backup drives, and tape backups as well... but again I can't imagine that they are any more reliable, if the two drives are comarable in other regards. SATA is Still SATA, though Fibre and SAS might be more reliable than SATA or PATA.

I have read the related thread from earlier this month (370606 - External USB Hard Drive Not Recognized) and wonder if anyone can help with my issue.

I am also curious what everyone thinks of the end of that thread regarding a better cable - Maxtor tech. support did not confirm that story for me? Is that in fact a better cable than what Maxtor ships with their drives?

I have a 1 month old Dell, 4 month old external hard drive, and 8 month old flash memory. All work separately. However, when I have the external hard drive plugged in and working, and then plug in the flash memory it will not be recognized. If I have the flash memory plugged in and working, and then plug in the external hard drive it will not be recognized. The only difference is that in the first case the external hard drive will continue to be readable by XP, while in the second case XP doesn't lose touch with the flash memory but it will show it (incorrectly) as empty.

Both externals and all ports are USB 2.0.

The flash drive is assigned to E. The external had been assigned to E as well, but I have now changed it to P. I am on a network so F through O are taken.

The PC is a standard university issue (Pentium 4, quite a bit of memory and capabilities, but nothing excessive).

The external drive is a Maxtor Personal Series 3100 80Gb USB 1.1/2.0.

The flash memory is a 64 Mb. Dell Memory Key.

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

Just bought a Buffalo drive station (external hard drive)and am unable to partition it using Partition Magic. Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Hey everyone,
Please help me here. I bought a Buffalo Ministation 120GB Portable Hard Drive a week ago, and it installed fine on my PC. Windows XP was able to read it and could use it without problems. I copied important data, some movies, to it as a backup. Everything was fine UNTIL I made a stupid move.

I used Diskeeper on my external hard drive, and defragged it, in hopes of increasing performance. It was done successfully. However, when today I opened my PC, windows ChkDsk popped up, and started fixing my H drive (ext hdd). There were many messages like file record segment (XXXX) unreadable etc. It kept stuck that way for a long time, so I restarted my PC, and ChkDsk was skipped.

My PC opened up as usual, and when I went to 'My Computer' to see my external hard drive, there was a MAJOR PROBLEM. The moment I clicked, My Computer became unresponsive, and computer performed sluggishly, not loading many programs like Firefox. The moment I disconnected the hard drive, all the pending programs opened up and the PC was normal. I spent half an hour doing this to try to sort things out, but to no avail.

So I decided to restart my PC with the HDD connected. The problem was, my PC didn't boot up for a long time, until I disconnected the HDD, and it fully booted up instantly.

It was time to connect online for help. After hours of research, I got many tips, and I tried them all out, with results below:

Hey guys!

Here is my promblem, I have had my 120gb external hard drive for quite some time now (maybe 6 months), it's an IDE to USB case in which you can put laptop HDDs, and mine is a 120gb toshiba in a Vaio case.

It has always been working fine, but yesterday I brought it to a friends place and when I plugged it in the power LED lit up, but the HDD did not start to spin, and the computer obviously did not recognise it. The case is not the problem as I was able to load different HDDs from it.

Can anybody tell me what happened? Did this happen because I unplug my USB components without safely removing them? (I doubt it though...). And transportation is not an issue, I handled it wit care

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks ppl

Hey everyone! My Maxtor external hard drive which I bought not long ago is now playing up. I saved a lot of my files on there and unfortunately for me I never got around to backing it up. I've been meaning too but due to my studies I just figured it would be alright to leave it till later. I now realise what a big mistake that was. Lately, when I hook up my USB hard drives, they're detected right away and show up in My Computer right away, but after that, they respond really slowly. On the first one, if I explore for it for a bit it will stop responding, and I'll either get an error ("My Computer" has stopped responding, click to end now, etc) or it'll just stop responding and I'll use the task mgr to close it. On the 2nd one, if I start to explore it, I get a DEP Prevention error on Windows Explorer and I have close and restart Explorer. This just started maybe 3 days ago. The first one works fine on a friend's Win2000 PC (I have XP Pro SP2), I haven't tried the 2nd one. I can burn files from either HD w/o problems. Any ideas?

BTW- I ALWAYS use the 'Remove Hardware Safely' option....

I have been having an odd problem with external usb hard drives. Since upgrading to a new computer, my external usb hard drive no longer works properly. My new system is a pentium 4d 950 running on an asus p5nd2-sli. 1Gy ddr2 ram. running windows xp sp2. This issue is that I have a 160 Gb ultra ide hard drive that I put in a usb 2 external enclosure. But, everytime I try to transfer files over, it eventually slows to a crawl and ties the whole systme down. IT never finishes transfering. The whole desktop becomes unresponsive but if I turn off the external drive, the desktop immediately snaps back to life. I have exchanged the external enclusre and tried this with my original seagate 160Gb drive and a new maxtor 200Gb that I just bought, thiking it was the drive that was defective. Proper usb drivers for the motherboard are installed on the system already. Any idea how I can fix this?

Thanks for you help!

I am running Windows Vista Service pack 1- 64 bit For some reson my external hard drive now shows up as 'Local Drive F'. The name of the USB device is WDC WD64 00AAACS-00G8B0. I no longer can access the files on it. This was the drive I put my backups on. When I click on the "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE' icon in the task bar...The message says " windows Cannot stop your device because a program is still using it. Close programs etc..." Before the disaster......... I installed some software I had for my monitor Viewsonic vx900 (when I had Windows XP) onto the new Vista. It was not working properly with Vista so I uninstalled it.Some of the dll files I could not delete...maybe this is the problem.I tried the System Restore... but to no avail. Is there a way to recover my files from my external drive?

If you indeed had any program files on it in the past, i would suggest deleting all of those files, if not...and you need the files..continue on.

So this problem started just a couple days ago. I have had my Western Digital USB hard drive for about two years, and over the past couple of months I had it hooked up to an HP Vista machine... After I moved it back to my Sony Vaio running XP I started to get DEP warnings every time I opened a folder on it containing a DIVX file. Well I got the DIVX problem fixed by adding the divx program as well as its codec to the DEP exclusion list (I have run Norton and AVG's anti-viruses to make sure it wasn't a virus).

Now the problem is whenever I click on a DIVX or XVID file on the hard drive (not open it, just click) Windows Explorer encounters some problem and shuts down and doesn't start back up... Thus crippling my computer requiring me to restart to get my icons, and the start bar back.

Here is the information given under the error report

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: sonydvvd.dll
ModVer: 3.91.6120.0 Offset: 00031468

any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you need any other information, do not hesitate to ask...

Ok. Well my external hard drive is about 3 months old.
I have videos, pictures and my itunes library on it.
It has been working without a flaw up until now.

I plug it in, type in password, click the vid or pic I wanna view and i get "discovering" or "cant find file/cant read file or cant read file because device error I/O."
Also, after I try to close the forever loading/discovering video it "stops working" and crashes explorer and explorer doesnt come back up until I unplug the drive.
It seems to not even want to load the picture folder at all.

????

I tried defraging it, scanning it with malwarebytes and McAfee with no avail.
It insists everything is fine.

Someone help? All my stuff is basically ON the harddrive but I cant use them
Also, while freaking out thinking I might lose everything, I tried moving/copying all my stuff to my laptop and only SOME things would transfer while other things will display "cant find or discovering.."

Its weird because it was working fine the day before and now its gone to hell overnight. I havent installed anything new on my laptop since. But on the drive i download stuff constantly so I can't really tell if all this started after I downloaded something or not.

Answer:WD External hard drive problem from no where?

I believe the first thin I would do is download Western Digitals diagnostic program, Data Lifeguard. Run the diagnostic program to find out if there are any problems with the hard drive.

I am using a Glyph external hard drive on my XP PC and it seems to have developed a recognition problem. When I plug it in, XP goes far enough to see that it is mounted and provides the "safe disconnect" icon, but the disk no longer shows up on My Computer so I cannot access it. There are no vital data on the disk now so I would be happy to reformat it and begin again, but I can't get at it. Device Manager tells me that the disk is functioning correctly, but I still can't see it. Has anybody got a way?

Hi   We've got a problem with a seagate 1TB external harddrive in that we can't use it. Basically the pc has trouble finding and then can't use it. The manager say's it's there but it's not showing when you click on the computer button in the start menu. When I bought up the properties through the manager for it to format it , everything went ok until the format started when we got the message - windows cannot format this drive. I downloaded the seagate tool and doing the 'long generic' scan it showed nothing but fails. Tried to do checkdisc but it couldn't/wouldn't find the drive. On the computer screen now where it shows the different drives , for the ext. hd it shows the drive letter but no diagram like the one for the int. hd with amount of memory used and when we open properties both the free and used memory both show 0   This has now happened on 2 PC's both running different windows 7 op's ( 1 home , 1 ultimate ) with the same result. Don't realy know what to do next , any idea's short of throwing it ?Thanks , Adam

Answer:External Hard drive problem

Hi With the tests you have done and the results posted the drive needs to be replaced. Return it under warranty some Seagate external drives have a 3 year warranty. If it isn't under warrantee and is a USB 3.0 case then would be worth installing a replacement hard drive into the case. You don't say how old the drive is or the model If there is important information on the drive there are other things that a recovery company can do to recover the data.

The external hard drive is not showing up any longer. This has happened before for no apparent reason but this time I accidentally mixed up the USB hub, which the external HDD is connected to, and the broadband router power supply cables. The USB hub made a noise so I knew something was wrong. Could this have affected the external HDD? Is there any other way of getting the external HDD to show up? I've tried restarting and disconnecting / reconnecting the external HDD.Just checked, The USB hub is 5v output and the router is 9v output.

Answer:External hard drive problem.

Connect the external drive directly to a USB port. You may have damaged the hub.

Ok, so i recently purchased a USB2 external harddrive, 120gb... I have been using it at school to backup my hard drive.. My computer is currently out of commision so i connected it to my old computer at home. Thers a slight problem tho. I had partitioned and formatted it using WinXP and the only computers ive used it on so far were XP. Now i have it connected to a Win98 computer and it says that the drive is not formatted. Is there anyway that i can get this drive to work with win98?? im getting so frusterated with this piece, if i had the money i would buy more ram and install XP, but right now thats not an option... any suggestions?? or is it hopeless?

Answer:external Hard Drive problem

How did you format the drive with XP? If you formatted the drive using a NTFS file system then the drive may not be readable with Win9x. You will have to use a FAT32 file system with the USB drive.

I have several Western Digital External Hard Drives USB 3.0, and 2 are identical drives with different data. One works fine. The other is not recognized; the light comes on and you can hear it working but it will not show up in "this PC," disk manager or device manager.

I was wondering if data would be recoverable or if there are any other options beyond sending it off. I read somewhere I could possible take it out of its case and use it as an internal? Or hook it up via SATA?

It is a WD My Passport 3.0 2 TB external drive.

Thanks In Advance,

Jim

I finally bit the bullet and bought a hard drive for backing up my system (P3, 733mg, XPSP1 home). It is a internal Western Digital 80g. I also got a USB enclosure for it so I can use it externally. I followed the enclosure directions and set the jumper on master. My computer would not even recognize the HD. I then set the jumper to single. This was recognized. I used the wizard that came with the HD to partition and format. It set at 1 partition and started formating. After 30 minutes of nothing happening, I stopped the program. I unplugged everything and started over. This time I specified custom setup and made 2 partitions of about 40g each. The computer restarted and the 2 partitions showed up in explorer as drive G and F. When I clicked on G, it said it was not formated and would I like to. I said yes. Again, after 30 minutes of apparantly nothing happening, I stopped the formating. According to Dell, the format should not take more than about 15 minutes.

Did I mess up the HD by stopping the process? I am exchanging it for a new one tonight on the way home from work, but I thought you guys could give me some tips on what I might be doing wrong and how to fix it.

I look forward to your sage advise!

Jeff

Hi, I am trying to back up my files using an external hard drive but I am having problems as it keeps stopping.

I am using Windows7 & integral (usb+Esata) hard drive, this isn't a new one as I was given it by a friend a while ago. I have used it on my desktop (WindowsXP), I can't remember though should I have a power lead in addition to the USB?

I have tried to search for driver update but can't find one.

Please can anyone help me as I can't backup onto DVD's anymore for some reason unknown! I possibly have too many files?

I have a 2.5 sata 250gb hard drive from a laptop with a broken screen. I bought a enclosure for it so I could use it as a external hard drive. During the process of backing up and clean up I apparantly deleted something important because it started saying the drives (the hard drive has a recovery partition) need to be formatted. Any attempt to format either partition fails. I tried partitioning to FAT32 in command prompt but it said 'cannot open volume for direct access'.

The only thing it does when I plug it in is pop up that the drive need to be formatted over and over and the drives won't show up in disk manager.

How can i get it formtted?

Hard drive still working with my Nintendo Wii. I don't know why it isn't working with windows.

I've read your post several times and am more confused. Are you dealing with only the 2.5" drive from the laptop in an enclosure? You refer to drives.
How does the enclosure attach? Does it show up in Explorer (Computer)?
In back up and clean up do you mean you were trying to recover data from the 2.5" enclosed drive or...?

I've got a problem with my Maxtor 3100 external hard drive. There are several things going on and I'm not sure what is connected to what so I'm just going to tell everything.
I recently bought the 80 GB Maxtor because my Dell only has a 4 GB internal drive and it is getting close to being full. I had upgraded from Windows 98 to XP SP1 several months ago and it filled up my C drive quickly! So I buy the Maxtor drive, open the box and plug it in just like the pictures show. Things seem fine. When I go to 'My Computer' it now shows both hard drives. When I go to disk management it shows both as well. I have Money 2005 on my C drive (internal) and I saved a backup of it to my E (Maxtor external). Then I had the brilliant idea to move Money from C to E to save space on my C drive. This is where it all goes down the drain. I did something wrong and I lost the Money file I was working on so I tried to restore from the backup on the E drive. Money said it couldn't find it on E or C. While trying to find out what was going on I, at some point, rebooted. At this point the computer couldn't find the Maxtor drive at all. It wasn't under 'my computer' or disk management. I can unplug the drive and it will then show up under 'my computer' but still not under disk management. So now not only have I lost Money I've also lost my external drive. I called Maxtor and they suggested converting both drives to NTFS from FAT32. I was ... Read more

Hi,

I just registered and I have a quick question. I have a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive, on which I store a lot of music. Normally when I plug it in, it comes up as the H: drive. However, it has recently been showing up as the F: drive, and my iTunes library is not recognizing the songs because they are now in a new drive. Rather than delete the entire library and re-import all my songs, I'd prefer to just get my external hard drive to show up as the H: drive again. Anyone know what the problem is/how to fix it?

Thanks a lot for any help anyone can provide!

I already had a Simple Tech 250 GB external hard drive and I bought a Maxtor 300 GB to replace it. So I know I messed this up but here goes: I plugged both into my comp and just drop and dragged my files to the other drive. However, I didn't realize that the new drive would be named a different letter drive (that tells you how much I know), so consequently the new drive I am using is call F: and the old drive is call E: My itunes software and all my music, video etc were of course transferred to the new drive that is now called F: so I'm having a problem now with itunes and when I tried to re-install it I got the following message:

Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation.
Consult windows Installer Help (msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.

I don't want to lose my 40 some GB of music and video trying to fix this problem.

Can anyone help me? I am using Windows XP Home on a Compaq Presario 2800.

I have an NexStar 3 2.5" external hard drive enclosure and am having
a problem. I have used this enclosure
successfully with a bunch of hard drives, however I am having a
problem with a Western Digital WD1200UE Drive (120 GB). The drive is
spec'ed to draw 940 mA max.
This drive was the primary drive in a laptop that stopped working
due to RAM problems. The drive was split into two partitions.

When I plug the drive into the computer (using two USB ports) the
computer finds the drive(s) okay, with the two partitions showing up
as E and F drives. The problem is that it shows no data on F drive
(which I know there is) and on E drive it only shows a few levels of
folders and files (the number of levels seems to vary each time I plug
the drive in). When I try to copy a file from the drive I get a
message that windows can't find the specified file.

What is going on and how can I fix it ?

Answer:External USB hard drive problem

Big draw for a 2.5" drive. As you are well aware usb ports (which work on 5v) can only provide 0.5a max each. In this case, connecting the WD drive using the additional usb power cable would be mandatory ie power cable first, then usb.

Questions:
1. Presumably, this WD drive has never been used in an external enclosure before.
2. Have you tested this arrangement using another usb port.
3. Are you plugging the external drive into a laptop or desktop usb port (laptop usb port may sometimes fall short of 0.5a)
4. Odd one now have you tried a different data cable ie the one that has a usb connector on one end and a mini usb on the other.
5. Have you tried plugging this into a powered usb hub.

I would take great care with this unit as it could conceivably damage your usb ports. As you are probably aware most 2.5" drives draw 0.5a.

Good Luck

PS: as an alternative route given the large amperage of this drive, I would be tempted to put this drive into a 3.5" external enclosure with a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter / converter (since most 3.5" external enclosures have their own external PS). I have never had need to resort to this method but have read many posts of people doing such to resolve detection issues with no ill effects.

Hello All,I have an external buslink USB firewire 160GB HD for 2 years. And it's has been making this knocking sound at times it would render the drive inaccessible. I would then have to unplug it for an hour or two then it would start working again. I have some very important files that i would like to transfer back to my computer HD which is only 80G. But i may need to purchase a larger harddrive but i'm having second thoughts about external harddrives as an option if this is the way they operate. The harddrive was well taken care of never dropped my office is in the basement where it's always cool. The max space i ever used on this drive was 30 Gigs i just do not understand why the drive would function the way it is with less than half of it capacity load. Can someone advise??Thanks

Answer:External Hard Drive Problem

Yes, that happens. What you may wish to do is next time buy a external drive from a company that offers a Long life warranty. But the warranty does not protect your data. Only you can do that.Make duplicates of very important files on DVD-R  and put them in a safe place.On-line storage is practical only if your Internet speed is above 10Mbps.

Hoping some one could shed some light on this (iomega couldn't).
I have an 120gb iomega external harddrive, I wanted to clean up my old computer by taking it back to factory settings so I disconnected my external harddrive and proceeded with the formatting.

When that was completed I plugged in the external hard drive - usually a little balloon would pop up and a poping sound saying new hardware found blah blah (XP). I'm getting the popping sound but not the balloons saying it's detected. When I go into safely remove hardware it is listed in there.

I can see the drive in disc management but there is no drive letter and it won't let me assign one (the options to do that when right mouse click over drive is not there only "help" is).

The actual external drive itself is humming along when i turn it on and starts up and sounds normal.

I took it and tried on another 2 computers and the same thing was happening. I don't understand how this would have happened as i did everything safely and being plug and play it should just work!!???

I had a few important pictures on the hard drive and all i really care about now is getting them off, to have the hard drive working again would be an added bonus.

Tried with firewire and usb
Model number DHD120-C

I'm pretty much a novice so any help would be fantastic - the drive is now out of warrenty.

I got an USB cable to hook up an internal hard drive to my laptop. It will not see the drive. I am trying to use it so I can retrieve the data and also use it to put my one drive stuff on it.

What can I do to troubleshoot this problem?

Answer:External hard drive problem

Is it a laptop (2.5") hard drive or a desktop (3.5") hard drive that you are trying to connect with the cable? If it is a 3.5" desktop hard drive, then you need a power supply/usb cable combination because USB by itself will not provide enough power to a 3.5" desktop hard drive.

Does the drive sound like it is powering up correctly? You should hear it spin up, make a couple of fairly loud clicking noises, then just keep whirring with more subtle clicking noises. What is bad is if the initial, louder clicking noises just keep repeating.

Is the drive showing up in disk management and you just need to assign drive letters to the partitions?

I have just bought a new PC (running on Win XP - SP2) and i tried to connect the external drive to the comp and it gave me an error stating that there was a problem with the device...When I went into the device manager of my PC it showed an unknown device in the USB section. However, on trying the external hard drive on my laptop I could connect without any problem..

Could someone please help me with my problem....thanx

Answer:Problem with my USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

You might be getting an unsigned driver error, and sometime windows decides not to tell you and just declines them for you.
Go into the device manager and uninstall the drivers for the device, now reboot and try plugging it in again.
If that dosent work, maybe you have a faulty internal USB hub.

I have a problem that has been bugging me for some time. I work on 4 different computers and need things like music, documents pictures etc stored on an external hard drive. My problem is that each computer defaults to looking at the internal C: for these types of files. How do I change the settings so Vista will default to an external hard drive for only my "profile" documents etc? Basically I want to run my operating system and programs on the internal hard drive and all other file like Documents, Pictures, OneNote Notebooks, ITunes music, etc. on the external hard drive. Please Help!

Answer:External Hard Drive Problem

go into your "Your Name" folder where "Your Name" is your username. Then, right click on the folder you would like to change the location of and click properties. In properties click the location tab and then set wherever you want on your external HDD to be the locaiton. Hope this helps :).

My fiancee has an external hard drive from Fabrik, a SimpleDrive. Its a TB in size. He's using it on his Windows XP. However, yesterday it stopped working. Sortve. It works in that the light comes on when its plugged in and powered up, and it shows up in the device manager, but he cannot access it in My Computer.

I took it to see if I could get it to work on my computer. The same issue happens. It installed fine. Light comes on. Its in the Device Manager where it says its recognized and running properly, and also shows up in Devices and Printers, but it doesnt show up in My Computer.

Uninstalling and reinstalling from the Device Manager doesnt do anything.

After much googling, I found my way to the Disk Management. The disk is there in the bottom half, but its labeled as Disk 1 - unknown - not initialized.

Right clicking and clicking on Initialize Disk brings up a window with the options of a Master Boot Record or GUID Partition Table. Neither do anything. When I hit okay, all I get is "Incorrect Function".

The only info that google searchs tell me is to right click and change Drive Letter and Path. I cant do that.

I cannot find anything else via google, so I came here in hopes that someone could help. He has a LOT of important info on this drive so I cant just reformat it.

And yes, I contacted the company, but it may take until Tuesday before I hear anything from them.

Any suggestions, or should we just wait till the company gets back to us?

Answer:External Hard Drive Problem

It looks like the MFT (Master File Table) on your disk was damaged. The Test Disk program may be able to fix it from the mirror. Read the first link to get an understanding and then look at the second link for the program.

Hi allI have an external hard drive which i have connected to my laptop nearly all the time. THe model is aSeagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB 3.5" External Hard Disk DriveIt has worked fine for the past few months. Earlier today i was using with no problems. I then needed to move so disconnected the laptop and the external hard drive and mvoed. When i plugged it in, i had a weird sound come on rather than the usual sound when loading up the hard drive. The sound i can only describe is like a whurring sound which then clicks when it gets to its peak. after a few of these series i get a beeping noise whilst the hard drive is still whurring, this beeping noise happens about 10 times, then the whurring noise occurs for a long period of time. This process happens over and over again. If i have it connected to the laptop, i cannot reach the screen to log in to Windows Vista whereas if i do not have it plugged in the laptop conitinues to run fine. I loaded the laptop up without it plugged in and then tried putting it in once it had loaded. The noises still occurred and when looking in my computer it did not show that any drive was connected. I now have an external hard drive making a beeping noise and whizzing round but i am unsure what i can do. Any suggestions will be appreciated.MikeP.s When the whurring noise hits its peak the light on the external hard drive goes off, then reappears as the noise starts again

From what you describe it sounds like there is a major fault with the drive, or, damaged power conection. Did you let the drive spindown before moving it?

Running XP on an new HP system and have had Maxtor 5000DV external hard drive hooked up for all audio stuff with drive letter L.Suddenly system decides to change drive letter to M.Manage to change it back to L thru dskmgmt(thanks P.C. Advisor tips),but now when I try My Computer to access the drive, click on drive and My Computer will not respond. In Media Player all the Audio stuff appears(is that data in the P.C.'S memory somwhere?)but will not play.Have checked out the error code info but can get no joy.The media player settings for copying has gone back to C(the default setting)If I try to change this thru the options settins the drive is not recognised.Sometimes a error message appears and says the drive is not formatted.I dont want to reformat because if my stuff is still on there reformating will wipe it off.In dskmgmt the info tells me the drive's capacity is 154 (its a 160 drive)but there is no format there (it was FAT 32)I have uninstalled the drive and the Dantz Retrospective and reinstalled them, downloaded signed drivers from Maxtor but still no good.If i disconnect the drive everything works fine.If I hook the drive back up Windows takes about a minute and a half to boot(could it be booting from this drive?)and it seems to be in conflict with everything. The amber light on the drive(for those with maxtor drives)is on for most of the time.Disconnect and all seems well.WMP9 is working fine with anything copied to C so I think the Media Player is O.K. Does anyone recog... Read more

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I'll start here. Have an HP Pavillion running Vista Home Premium with a 500 G WD Mybook External USB drive. I have it set for an automatic backup at midnight every night using Vista's backup feature, which works well. The problem I'm having is that several times during the day when I'm working at the computer, the external drive starts running, it slows my computer down to a crawl, for 10 seconds or so, then it stops and computer returns to normal.
Any ideas what's going on ? Not a big issue, mostly an annoyance.
Thanks in advance.

I'm desperate for some help from someone who knows testdisk or can recommend another program that will recover my data. It suddenly started to report that it was raw data and when I ran testdisk (as advised by Western Digital) it appears that the partition table information is corrupted. I believe I need to change the geometry information but Idon't understand how this works. I really would appreciate any help with this as I am sure the data is still there. The disk has all my partner's music files on it, which were transferred because he has just got a new PC. As he has just had Chemo for liver cancer the stress of losing all his data is really not helping a very sick man.

Answer:Problem with external hard drive

You could try Recuva which is a free file recovery program. click here I'm not sure that it will work if the file allocation tables are corrupt but it will not do any further harm.

I'm running Vista Home Premium with a WD5000 external USB Hard Drive. I formatted the external drive rebooted, and now the drive is not recognized in either Computer or disk management. It shows up in WD's Lifeguard Diagnostics tests that it works but does not show serial# or capacity. Should I junk this? I'm afraid to use it for backup. What to do?

Answer:USB external hard drive problem

I recommend you contact Western Digital Support at: WD - Service & Support Home by whatever means you prefer - phone is usually the best. Discuss the problem with them and see if they can assist you. You did not provide enough information about the make and model of the drive (there's a make name and the model is a MUCH longer code) for me to assist or research any further. If you do, I'll see what I can find, if anything. There are many possible causes - it is not compatible with Vista, it needs updated drivers or software, it is defective, - and it's also possible there's a hardware or software problem with the computer (but we don't have enough information to tell).

Do you have another computer (using Vista) you can test it on to see if it works? If not, it's probably the drive. If so, it's probably something about the computer. If you do this test and find it is the computer, post back.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hi

Havin a problem with a ext HD, 6 months old 250GB USB 2

It appeares in Windows explorer as
Local Disk M

"The disk in drive M is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?"

24Hrs ago it was called "Data (M: )" and was 190 GB full.

The problem first appeared whilst plugged into a laptop, there was no obvious reason.
os XP

Ive allready tried to plug it in several ports on several computers, all result with the same format option.
When I remove it from the USB ext case and wire it with the ide cables and change the BIOS boot up to auto. The reboot takes a while to go through the BIOS start up but it doesnt find the HD.
Then I put it back into the USB case tried the seagate SeaTools online ext HD test it says its OK but empty.

So now Im scratching my head.

Is there anything else I can try or at lest how do I get the data back? Is there a way to retrieve data after a format??

Id really appreciate any help, as this could be a real nightmare.

I've searched around and this problem seems unique, but then again I'm not that experienced with this sort of thing. I have had a 500GB Maxtor One Touch Plus 4 (The black one with the light at the front which is also a button you can press to back-up data) for about four months. Initially it was working fine. I loaded the Maxtor Manager software and almost filled it completely with important files I couldn't fit on my laptop (as it only has a 40GB capacity). About 2 months after having it, sometimes the windows I had open from the drive would suddenly close and either the drive would suddenly disappear from being recognised by the computer, or if it was still recognised, when I would try to click on it it would say "Disc has not been formatted. Format now?". Usually I could fix this simply by unplugging the external hard drive and plugging it in again, and the drive would work fine again. However about a week ago, this same thing happened again, but no matter how many times I unplugged and replugged it, whenever I tried to access the drive it would ask me if I wanted to format it. Obviously I can't reformat it because that would mean losing all my data, but I've tried everything short of calling up a seagate support number or a local independent IT person. I've tried other USB ports, other USB cables, other computers, updated drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, and turned the drive upside down but I still can't access the... Read more

Greetings Everyone ,

This is my first time posting in this forum.

Here is my case for my problem :

I have a 2 TB Buffalo External Hard Drive, in the last couple of days especially at night
my External hard Drive produce a noise like "TikTik" sound which followed by a "beep!" and it wont stop.

Which i decided to unplugged the external hard drive usb cable and tried to plug it again in my personal computer including the HDD external power source.

However , it does not solve the problem.

I could still access my files at that time but at the worst moment , once i clicked a single folder , it was loading for a long period of time which makes the windows explorer is not responding or crashed.

Then i decided the same method unplugging the HDD external usb cable and the power source and try to reconnect it again. Surprisingly, as soon as the HDD external rebooted , it does not appear in the Windows Explorer and decided to use the device manager but still it does not help.

Anyone help and support will be appreciated.

I plugged my BUFFALO external hard drive yesterday and some of my important folders (My music, my document, my pictures..) seems to DISAPPEAR. It's like it is deleted but the space used remains the same.

I tried:

1. Searching the missing folders but it doesn't shows up
2. Scanning for Malware, trojan or virus but its clean
3. Using software such as recuva( recovering software ) but no luck
4. Changed the setting to view hidden files
5. chkdsk using windows 7(recover for bad sector)
6.Tried it on another laptop
7. Rebooting windows in safe mode strange enough SOME of my folders seems to reappear again. But some are still missing.

Can anyone kind enough to help me please. Some of my folders contains very important files.

Another problem with my hard drive is that it gets really really slow recently and i'm having problems transferring files to it. Most of the time it even freezes and i have to remove the hard drive . It also kept asking me to reformat .

Sorry I did not give details of my computer. I have Windows 8.1 as OS, I have 120GB SSD for operating system, a 1TB internat HD, with a cd/DVD Drive. I have Intel i5 quad core CPU, 16 GB DDR3 RAM and am able to connect a Hard Drive directly to my Motherboard and to the machines power supply. When my Hard drive is connected to computer should be viewed as an internal Hard Drive and it is. However it gives a message that it fails the SMART Test. The disks used to be connected via USB and I had more than one connected at the same time. Windows caused the problems on the hard Drives when so connected and offered to Scan the Hard Drive. I was reluctant to do this for fear of causing data problems and that was the start of the problems.

Hi Guys,
I have an older home built computer with Windows XP .
I only had 160gb internal hard drive and had purchased a 320gb external with no problems.
Now that one was filling up so I just purchased another external drive, but this time 640gb.
The problem is this: if the 640gb one is turned on the same time as the computer, the computer will not boot up.
It will only boot up if I leave the 640gb drive off and then turn it on once the computer is up and running.
I never had this problem with the smaller external drive. It was always on.\
What could be the problem??
Both external drives are connected via usb cables.
Thank you

Hi I recently bought a Seagate 300 GB external hard drive and I accidentally plugged in the wrong power cord for it.  I plugged in a 4 volt when it was supposed to be a 3.5 volt.  Anyway the hard drive doesnt turn on anymore.  The company said they cannot recover the info on it, so I can either get a new one without all of my work (that I didnt back up cuz im a noob), or I can attempt to get it repaired which will void my warrenty.  The thing is I really need this information that is on this because it has most of my school wokr on it.  Can anyone tell me the possible problems that could be wrong with it and what I could do to repair it?  Or if anyone knows where the schematics of this model is that would help too. Thanks everyone,Dan

I have tried other forums but this one's aim is only computers so hopefully I will be able to get help from you guys ..

First of all I had windows vista which I changed to Windows XP, I never took out my external harddrive during this process so because of that I think I got a cyclic redundancy check error (crc) ..

I tried fixing that with chkdsk /r but the process takes too long for it to finish even though I only have x amount of gb now )less than 200 gb, I cleansed a whole lot because I have a TB hard drive..)
It looks for files which are located "\Recycled\Di89\...\..." which I have deleted BUT these files are still in the trash bin and I can't get rid of them from there .. I can not see them on my external hard drive but somehow parts of them are there in a recycled- kind of folder ..

I have a WD portable 250 GB exetrnal hard drive that is not being recognised by my Toshiba laptop running Vista. to get past the firewall to instal drivers. I cant find drivers on the WD site. I've also disabled the notification popup for this device so the result is a repetitive error tone until I disconnect it.Any suggestions?A link to download drivers for Vista [if this is the problerm] would be appreciated..

Answer:WD external hard drive problem

You should not require drivers When you plug in an external drive via USB Vista should already have the drivers for a USB / IDE / sata interface and recognise the device as a mass storage device.
