Question: Computer problems, freezes, performance getting worse...

Hello, I'm new to the forums so I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I decided to Sign Up here and ask because I'm tired of trying to google my problem, but I usually trusted this website the most because people here gave the most solid results.

I'm going to start posting my computer specs and then tell you how this problem developed and what is going on now.

So, I've had 4 PC computers. First one was a bad computer from 1998-2000 that I got from my dad, then I bought a really good gaming computer, degraded and had a bad computer and then I upgraded again and bought this one, it was used.
I know a man that works with computers a lot, fixing basic issues and putting up operating system and so on.

When I got this computer first it didn't have any operating system and I asked him to put up Windows XP and he did that for me. He told me he has worked on a lot of good computers and he had never put up a system on this good computer and everything he tried happened really quickly. He told me it usually takes him about a day to put up operating system but with this one it took about an hour.
Then I got the computer back the day after and it wasn't performing well, it wasn't a big issue because one of the RAM was loose in the computer. I had to take off some dust in the computer so I bought compressed air and used it on all the stuff in the computer, mostly the Graphics Card and the fans because it was making a lot of noise in games, now it doesn't make a lot of noise.

But another problem came up, my SATA hard drives are not really solid. My local disc is always up and doesn't disappear but my other hard drive called New Disc or something like that (the second hard drive) is always either disappearing or not being found when I run the computer, sometimes it does but usually it doesn't. I've tried putting the plugs in other plugs in the motherboard but it might work for a day if I try for 10 minutes.

Then another problem is coming up, my computer sometimes freezes. I play Football Manager 11 often when I'm in the computer and I'm always listening to music at youtube/iTunes. It shouldn't be a problem for my computer to handle, but sometimes it is. Out of nowhere the computer freezes and the noise also freezes and just repeats the part of the song it was only 1000x faster.

I've tried searching for registry cleaners but many people said it was unsafe but I still downloaded CCleaner but only used it on internet history and recently used documents. I've also looked at what people think about PC Health Advisor and Tune Up Utilities and most of them say it's a scam for them to get money and it doesn't really do anything.

I was thinking if the geniuses here could tell me what I should try, I'm a 'noob' in all problems like that. I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out here, this thread is going to my favorites and I'm going to be checking this often to look for replies.

Thanks in advance.

And my computer isn't as fast as it used to be, it can take up to 3 minutes to start the computer up and then 1-2 minutes to wait for the startup programs to come up. In the startup programs I think Steam takes the most time to load.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A couple of days ago, I did a system restore, took what files I needed, and reformatted afterwards. In the past, I got freezes every now and then, even after unchecking some of the stuff I didn't need starting up at login. Now, it freezes at the same rate, if not, more often than before. I'd really like to find out what the source behind all this is.

Can anybody please help? I have a T61 that came with 2Gb RAM (1GB + 1GB) and I recently purchased another 2GB chip. The problem is that after installation I had a total RAM of 3GB (1GB + 2GB), the Windows Experience Index score actually decreased!  It went from 3.5 to 3.1!!Also, under the category Memory (RAM), the score remained unchanged at 4.8!! Should this have at least increased? Also, I am not noticing any improvements in performance. Is there something that I haven't done or is there anything I should do after the installation? And yes, I did refresh/update from index score. Please don't tell me I need to buy a new notebook!!!Thanks

Answer:Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Part of the problem is that with two differents sized DIMMs you lose the Dual Channel mode feature of the RAM, so the effective throughput of the RAM would be lowered compared to the two 1GB modules that operated in dual-channel. If possible I would suggest 2 x 2G modules for a total of 4GB or if you can afford it 2 x 4G modules for a total of 8GB this will keep the dual channel mode active and the RAM performance optimal.

Hi everyone,

I've been a long time reader on this forum and most of the time I was able to find my answers with the search option. This time however, I'm clueless! So I hope I can count on your expertise. ;)

Yesterday I formatted a friend's computer and installed Windows 7 (he used Vista previously). He can't work at the moment due to an accident, so he's gaming a lot. I told him that Win7 had much better performance than Vista and that he should consider to upgrade. After installing everything we immediately noticed that the performance was much worse...

He mainly plays Diablo 3 and was able to get a very stable framerate in Vista and he always even watched internet streams meanwhile on his secondary display (Full HD TV, connected with VGA).

I installed all latest Nvidea drivers on Windows 7, disconnected the second display, ... And while playing Diablo 3 he gets major framedrops and stutters. To be honest it isn't playable this way.

What could cause this difference in performance? I feel bad for formatting his PC, promising him better performances and seeing that I've almost ruined his gaming experience...

The "freeze" seems to happen when the IE7.0 browser is open (though, I do not
necessarily think it is definately a browser problem). Anyway, drwtsn32.exe
always activates when this problem occurs, and wants to send a report.

I have reviewed the contents of the report on several occasions and it
basically shows the error in the same location every time with the identical
error (I think).

The error is always occurring here: C:\Documents and Settings\Daddy\Local

The only way I can unfreeze my computer when it locks up is by going to my
task manager and ending task on one of TWO drwtsn32.exe's.

I went to my event viewer and looked up my last crash information that was
sent to microsoft. It happened about an hour ago. This problem is starting to
happen more often now, and is finally annoying the hec out of me. It is an
application error, and here are the details straight from the event viewer:

Not sure if this is the right place to post this issue, but I have no idea if it's a hardware, software, or other issue entirely.

It started doing this today; so far I can't nail down a pattern as to what causes it. It was turned on this morning and had been on but not used for about four hours before my wife got on. She used it for maybe 15 minutes, and then it started glitching and freezing up. The mouse became unresponsive in fits, then eventually the system froze entirely.

She rebooted and ran a full virus scan, but it came up with nothing. It also had frozen again by the time the virus scan was finished, so I had to reboot it again. I was able to use it for maybe 20 minutes or so before I experienced the same glitching and freezing. I rebooted it once more, and now I'm writing this post.

The only common denominator I can think of so far is that we were both using an internet browser when it glitched. She was able to close the browser and continue working on the document she had open for a short time before it froze entirely. When I encountered the issue, it froze too quickly for me to do anything.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Computer starts glitching, gets worse, then eventually freezes

Try this and make sure none of your system files aren't corrupt.

This started suddenly. I had just worked on a windows movie maker file for a friends daughter for a school project and was using nero to convert it to a dvd file. After the first attempt was unsuccessful, my computer was crashing and I rebooted. When I did, I could no longer open my Nero, I got the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."

I soon found out, I also got this when I tried to use winzip, or vlc media player.

Who knows what else is effected. I have been searching for fixes, and found several threads here.

I have already tried a system restore to earlier in the day before it occured, as well as tried merging exefix.reg from another post reccomendation, and following instructions from still no luck.

Everything works fine in safe mode and I AM the administrator of my system.

I have a paid version of AVG. Ran virus checks, malware and spyware checks, nothing suspicious shows up.
It has now effected more programs, I initially posted in software, but now Im afraid its a malware or hidden trojan, as more and more programs become effected. PLEASE HELP I use my computer for my business with web design, photo editing and computer generated art.

I have since tried to uninstal my AVG and reinstall, system restore, last working configuration, HELP

Yesterday my computer was running very slowly and taking forever or never getting to the sites I wanted, especially clicking on a google search title. I did a scan with Malwarebytes free version (updated) and it showed 20 PUP optional.b infections. I immediately clicked to remove them and restarted my computer. Upon restarting I was horrified to find that when I clicked on Internet Explorer it would not connect me to any of my usual sites such as Outlook, Google, Facebook, my bank NOTHING! So I went back to the scan results and restored everything that I had checked to remove on the Oct 22 11:29 scan. Then Internet Explorer worked again and I could get to where I needed to go. Then I did another scan resulting in the PUP opt.b infections; this time I removed the ones that were in memory, registry value or registry key, removing only the ones that were located in files or folders. Again restarted and sure enough no Internet Explorer again! So I restored all of the PUP infections again and here I am today. Computer is still painfully slo... Read more

i found this highly worrying to be quite frank, ive been running Vista Ultimate 32x SP2 for a long time no problems atall including with performance.

over the weekend i VM'ed a win 7 machine through Vista using the same Laptop receorces and it ran ok.

I then thought i might aswell move onto win 7 as vista is no longer the main focus point of compatability

So i formatted my drive fully and installed win 7 ultimate 64x within 30mins.

This is whats getting me though its slower than Vista! startup and log in just takes an age and Idle is at 900Mb with no startup Apps apart from the AV and windows stuff thats essential to start up.

Any ideas as to why its so slow to start up and using so much RAM at IDLE?

Answer:performance worse than Vista

Dell Dimension 1Ghz Pentium 3 running Win 2000 Pro SP4. I had been experiencing lots of sluggishness and programmes taking ages to open and close, so I increased the RAM from 384 to 512, (the maximum for the machine.) I didn?t expect miracles but I did think it would make things a little better. Far from improving things, it seems to be worse.Thinking it may be because the two 256s were different brands and perhaps not compatible, I juggled around between two machines so that I have 512 of the same make, but it?s still no better. Virus/spyware all up to date and checks come up clean apart from the odd tracking cookie; Ccleaner and Clean Up are run quite frequently, and as far as I can make out I only have essential programmes and processes running.Any suggestions as to why things should seem so slow, and even slower since upping the memory? Thanks :o)

Answer:Performance seems worse since increasing RAM

The speed at witch things open and close is not always a ram issue,it also takes into account the cpu speed and hard drive access time, and things loaded at start up that all use ram and cpu recourses. It may well be that the speed you have now is all your pc can achieve.512Mb ram is fairly low for todays standards as is a 1Ghz cpu and if W2000 is anything like XP it is extremely Ram/process hungry. You could try a defrag of the hard drive and try cleaning out the rubbish on the hard drive click here with this you never know it may just improve)HTH.

Hi, I ran several benchmarks and recorded the results. The computer was an i7 3770 on an Asus P8H77-V with 16gb 1600mhz ram and a GTX 770.

After upgrading my entire computer (more specifically just building a whole new one and giving the old one away) except my vidoe card, which I added to my new system. The new CPU is a 4770K, the new mobo is an MSI Z78-GD65 Gaming, I have different RAM but the speed and timings are the same.

Anyway, I get lower results in benchmarks now Why could that be?

Answer:After upgrading performance is worse

The 3770 and the 4770K will provide similar performance. Now, If I read this correctly, the GPU is the same? If so, then you really didn't do much of an upgrade. More so, you just moved to a newer generation with a unlocked processor (K).

I recently installed a newer video card in my rather old computer. But it actually made the performance when playing Flight Simulator 2004 worse? With my old GeForce 2 Pro I could run the graphics medium to low, but with the new better card I can put all the sliders as low as possible and it is still unplayable. It gets under 20 fps. I also upgraded from 512mb of RAM to 1Gb when I installed the new GPU, so I was expecting a considerable upgrade in performance in FS, I didn't expect it to get worse!!
Here are my specs: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 1.74GHz, 1GB RAM. ASUS A7N266-VM mobo. XP Home. The new GPU is a GeForce 6200A 128MB

Does anyone know what could cause this??

I upgraded to Windows 10 about a week ago, and performance was fine. Then later on performance got worse. I notice lag in Firefox here and there and when typing sometimes (even right now). I usually just have Firefox, Steam and Skype open. Now the fan is louder than usual. I'm even using a cooling pad.

I ran a virus scan with Trend Micro Maximum (my main virus protection), Malawarebytes (and the MB Rootkit Killer), and SpyBot. Trend Micro caught one thing which it removed. The other stuff didn't find anything.

Anyone know what to do?

So recently, I've upgraded the CPU on my Dell OptiPlex 380. It came installed with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5800. A month later, I decided to upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Every single site (with the exception of UserBenchmark) I've seen comparing the two, along with a lot of opinions, show that the E8400 is significantly better. How come I'm seeing worse performance? It has a strange bottleneck in less demanding games, and only shows a performance boost in very particular games. Overall, browsing the web is a lot better, I'm able to watch Ultra HD/Quad HD video (sometimes even 4k) and can do general tasks with ease. Despite this however, its gaming performance is extremely lacking compared to my older CPU. How can this be?Note: I've cleaned my fan and cooler, reapplied thermal paste, cleaned my motherboard, and pretty much the entire system, yet still no performance increase.

Hi, I just got a new computer the other day, and it seems to be running slower than it should be.
The specs on the new system are:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHz
Motherboard: ASUSTeK P5NSLI
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT
Memory: 1GB

My suspicions first started when I tried to play Counter-Strike: Source, and got an average of 30 FPS or so, less than my old, much less powerful system. So I decided to download 3DMark06 and try that out. I got a score of 3022, which was the lowest score of any other system like mine. The CPU score alone was 581.

So then I decided to check out Intel's website. I found an "Intel Processor Identification Utility". It reports both cores running at 1.18 GHz instead of the expected 2.13 GHz, and the system bus at 790 MHz, instead of the expected 1066 Mhz.

So, what might be wrong with the processor? Is there some small thing that might be causing problems, or is it time to send the thing back to the manufacturer? Also, would a slow processor completely account for the low 3DMark score, or is there possibly a problem with the video card as well?

Answer:Worse than expected performance, core 2 duo

I played WoW for years on a 10 yr old computer by Gateway..

These were the specs
1.3ghz Pentium 4
1.5gb RAM
Windows XP
Nvidia Geforce 5000something(it was old)

Then I circumstances had me get rid of my old computer, so I adopted a different computer given to me by a friend. It is sort of off-brand, its an Everex Impact. It had Vista and a bunch of junk on it, but I reformatted it to XP. I also upgraded the RAM from 500mb to 2gb and I put a new video card in it.

These are the specs
1.5ghz AMD processor
2gb RAM
Windows XP
Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT

Ok, so, before, on the older computer.. It ran WoW like a champ. No lag, hardly at all. However, now, on the newer computer, my computer freezes up in high-lag zones, where alot of people reside, especially where alot of action is taking place.

Im pretty sure it has nothing to do with my internet connection. Its a standard 100mb/s, same as before. Im convinced there is SOMETHING wrong with my computer.. I just have no way to diagnose the problem any further.

Any pointers or tips in how to diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated. There has to be something Im missing, something Im overlooking. If anymore information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Just throwing this out:
Does ANYONE have hard data proving that Boot performance [as measured by Windows own internal monitoring, not your conjecture] with Windows 10 is BETTER than on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 on the exact same hardware/devices and applications?

I have yet to see even ONE single example of such on systems that went to market with 8/8.1 or 7 and then were upgraded, regardless of the method [clean install, new drive, whatever, or inline "upgrade"].
I've seen some that, from the User perspective, get to a tolerable point of "its OK", but checking the actual Diags log, it ain't so....
And of course, some are downright unusable, and are best to revert to the good OS that works well.

What is your experience, and data?

[I plan to do a pass through local Best Buy and pull the logs on a bunch of Windows 10 systems on display and see what the recorded bootup and shutdown data shows]

Answer:Boot Performance worse in Windows 10 vs prior. Always?

Windows 10 boot performance is erratic at best. Most of the time seems quite random.

Hi, folks. I'll be concise. I use Avast! and Comodo System Cleaner, and have been noticing some performance loss in the last few days. Especially, out of the blue, today, Left 4 Dead 2, a game which I have always been able to run fine, suddenly will barely run at settings I've ran perfectly even up til yesterday. Something has obviously happened in the last 24 hours. Something is wrong.I'm marginally knowledgeable, but interpreting this HiJackThis log is just beyond my scope, and I don't want to make anything worse here.I digress. Here's the log. I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

Hi everyone.
I built a custom gaming PC a week ago and unfortunately haven't been able to get peace ever since. I've been seeing "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" or "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" BSOD, and my games have been randomly freezing 1-3 secs randomly (sometime never in several hours, sometimes twice every minute). Other than the freezes (where PC wont respond to alt-tab etc.) the games run butter smooth at around 55 fps. I play system intensive games such as Crysis 3 and Shadow of Mordor. After the freeze the game continues running with 55 fps , no micro stutters or anything. The GPU and CPU temperatures seem normal. What I've done:
- Ran CHKDSK - no error found
- Installed games on a different HDD and ran them from there to make sure the problem was not with the SSD - issues not resolved
- Ran memtest86 for one hour (4 cycles I think) - no error found
- Removed one of the two RAM sticks to try each of them out alone in different slots. Interestingly using a single ram I get significantly less frequent BSODs, but still do with each of them. This makes me think the issue might be with the MoBo?
- Ran Hot CPU Tester Pro diagnostic overnight. In the morning I saw that the PC had crashed and restarted and the screen displayed the warning "Your PC ran into an Error and had to restart".
After running the Hot CPU Tester Pro, my games are freezing at least 3 times more often and for longer periods, making them unplayable. Just now I had Mordor freez... Read more

Answer:BSOD and freezes that keep getting worse

Update: Wow...major WTF moment. It seems like I found the culprit. I connected the SSD (where Windows OS is installed) to another sata port with another sata cable. All issues disappeared. So from the looks of it either the SATA port is defective or the cable is. Will test tomorrow as I'm currently exhausted.

How on earth can this have caused so many issues?! So if there is an issue with the hardware where the OS is installed:

a) your PC gets several different types of BSODs (btw had another different error today: " KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (luafv.sys) " and "System Thread Exception Not Handled"
b) You get these errors only when playing games, and games keep on freezing randomly 1-20 seconds
c) this happens even when the games are run from external drives...

Seriously what the hell... Will change as solved tomorrow after further testing. I would be happy if an expert could still check the DMP files to be sure.

I am having performance problems with my computer. Every little while, after I have used many different programs, it starts to slow down, all programs are slower and it tends to freeze for a few seconds. This also happens when I play computer games, the computer game is fine for a while but after a while it starts to run slowly as if the computer is having difficulty running the game at the right frame rate. After a restart or shut down the problem goes away. What could be causing this? What performance increasing programs - e.g cleaners etc can you reccomend?

I'm experiencing some difficulties of speed performance with my computer, I'm the one to blame - too much s*** downloaded,
especially with internet using, browser capabilities and program extracting and installing.
Computer works perfect for a few hours after reboot, but then everything gets to slow to manage,
programs not responding well, webpage takes too much time to appear properly and so on and so on.
I'm Using IS9 but rather than detecting Vulnerability files it doesn't find any malware, or any other hidden programs.
Computer is brand new, bought it less than a month, Quad core Q6600, Ram 2048, two HD's
Windows XP Pro SP2.
Thanks to anyone willing to help.

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

I downloaded a file from Limewire a few days ago, and from the moment it was downloaded (it has since been deleted), I've been experiencing a number of problems. It started with the program Limewire starting up on it's own, and continues to run itself after I close the program. When I looked at the running processes, I suspected a process called "rundll32" that I haven't seen before. I ran Spybot S & D, and HijackThis in safe mode, which seemed to get rid of the problem.

However the speed of my computer is still suffering, and every 30 minutes or so it will bog down so comepletely that I can't do anything, and I get a message that says "Your System could be unstable - A potential problem has been deteced and Windowns has been shutdown buggy application to prevent damage to your computer."

Any suggestions? I can post HijackThis Log upon request

Answer:Problems with computer performance.. possible infection

Go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer.
Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website
Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

My lattitude e7470 recently had the mother board replaced under warranty due to a BSOD problem. That fixed the BSOD, but now it freezes for a few seconds every few minutes or the screen goes haywire (looks all jaggy and unreadable) if I run a program without adjusting the program's settings to disable hardware acceleration.
Specifically MS office 13 freezes for a few seconds roughly every 5-10 minutes unless I go into the MS Office settings and turn off hardware acceleration. Google Chrome offers a combination of similar brief freezes and less frequent incidents where the screen suddenly becomes unreadable. Interestingly when the screen goes haywire, it only affects the webpage part of the window, the tabs at the top of the window and any portion of the Windows desktop in the background look fine. Again, delving into the settings for chrome and turning off hardware acceleration solves the problem.
While turning off hardware acceleration in the programs settings seems to be a fix, I have a number of critical programs that don't have this setting and therefore continue to be plagued by freezing.
For the record this is windows 10 and the machine has intel integrated graphics.
I have updated all my drivers repeatedly based on the automated suggestions fro the Dell website, run the ePSA diagnostics and the diagnostics on the dell support website (all passed), and tried various other things.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Could this be a hardware problem? Should I be getting ... Read more

I have a feeling this is in the wrong section so if it is please move it (and feel free to yell at me)

Im having two problems with my computer.... the first which has been going on for the last 2 months is:

Im having a horrible time with my computer latly. It is an acer laptop Aspire 3620 series with windows XP. This has been going on for a few months but latly i have found my laptop freezes up, and becomes impossible to use. For some reason whenever i attempt to run a single program (IE,Firefox, MSN, photoshop ect) i have the whole thing begin to freeze were my mouse refuses to move and i cannot do anything. My only choice is usualy to end the proccess (Ctr+alt+Del). I notice this has been happening more and more. Everything just to seems to have slowed down. Before i could run multiple programs, firefox (4-5 tabs open) msn and even photoshop CS2 all at once and have very minimal problems. I have tried reformating my harddrive multple times (Reseting it to the factory defualts), which leaves me with the bare minum on my computer and yet i still have these problems.... is there anything that i can do to fix this? is this XP or hardware? should i look at getting a new computer or?

My second problem:

Which is a brand new problem that has accorred on every bootup within the is past 4 days everytime i boot up my computer it goes from the windows black loading screen (were the green thingies go back and forth) for 30seconds (normal) THEN (this never happened before) it goes to... Read more

Answer:Start Up & Performance problems - Laptop Computer

It could be hardware or software; I don't know.

First thing I would try is Start> Run> Type CMD and press enter> A command prompt screen will open> Type CHKDSK C: /R at the command prompt and press enter again. You may need to restart your computer before it will run and it may take quite some time to finish.

I had a similar problem with a machine this week and it turned out there were bad sectors on the hard disk. After running CHKDSK C: /R, the problem cleared up for an hour or so until another bad sector developed. I replaced the disk and the problem went away.

A hard disk that is too full can cause this, too; but, you stated you formatted and the problem persisted. Did formating clear the problem temporarily?

It also could be malware. Are you getting a lot of pop-ups?

I have a Gateway sx2840-01 running Windows 7. It has a Core i3 530 cpu, 6Gb of RAM and a 1 Tb hard drive. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010. When we set up the new computer we removed an old Dell that had been on a workgroup with the Gateway. These are the only recent changes to the operating environment I can think of. I'm having three problems that seem to have arisen simultaneously:  I can't run Internet Explorer with Flash Player installed, I can't download and install either Chrome or Firefox, and System Restore either fails or introduces new problems.I wish I had made  notes of my attempts to fix the problem, I'll make as complete an accounting as my memory allows.I first encountered the problem with Internet Explorer, when I tried to start it it froze and I got an error message to the effect that Adobe Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller 10.1 r102 had stopped working. I uninstalled Flash Player and Internet Explorer started normally, when I reinstalled Flash Player the problem recurred. At this point I decided to switch to Chrome, but Chrome was behaving oddly too, specifically I couldn't make any edits to my bookmarks. I decided to uninstall and reinstall Chrome. Chrome would not reinstall. I attempted to install Firefox, same problem. In both c... Read more

I just got the Pentium D 820 CPU ASUS P5LD2-VM mobo, SAMSUNG PC2-4200 512MB DDR2-533 RAM. I installed it exactly as the instructions told me to. But when I started it up, nothing came up on the monitor. So I checked it's connections, and they where all fine. So I took out the ram and CPU and put them back in. The computer started up, making a beeping sound, but it froze during the boot up process. Distorting a few of the lines on the screen with weird colours. I started it up again no beeping noise, and nothing coming up on the screen. So I took the CPU out again, and put it back in again. The computer starts up and I check the bios, and check the CPU temp, its running 80C to 89C. And then it freezes on the screen. Again distorting a few lines of text. So I did this process twice more, once getting a temp of 60-71C. And then 40-48C. And each time it would still freeze after a short a mount of time. Please help!

Sounds like you arent mounting the heatsink on the Cpu properly. The machine is freezing because the cpu is getting too hot and hence, becoming unstable

I'm running an Envy 14 laptop with Windows 7.
My boyfriend downloaded a couple of sketchy games on it recently and it started acting out. It froze yesterday - one of those mid-song nasty freezes with the sound drilling in your head - and it's something it's never done before. I tried to look into it more today, tired to run System Restore a couple of times, it froze on "System Restore initializing..." so both times after waiting for 15min, I force-shut down. I ran Mbam in safe mode (it took me a while to get the system to start in Safe mode, it just refuses to properly start or shut down) and it only found the few files that were part of his games that supposedly were fine. But I'm not sure if that's the case, so I deleted them, but it still feels iffy. It's not running properly and I wanna make sure there's nothing nasty lurking in my system.
Help, anyone?

Okay, so I have an ASUS Barebone Pundit P1-PH1 system, with a gig of ram, 3ghz processor, and lots of experience.

I usually have no problems getting rid of spyware, malware, etc, especially after looking in these forums countless times.

I have Rkill, mbam, dds, and hijack this. In case that helps.

Anyways, I seem to have aquired some viruses or malware or SOMETHING that is really wearing down my computer. I'm getting pop ups on firefox, i have 5 new processes all running under the name of lsass, im having some really slow times where it seems like nothing will work, my browser freezes, now im getting these error messages having to do with windows .net framework, and plenty of other problems.

My big thing is this. I have been trying to work on fixing everything, but im starting to get worn down. I cant even dfo a system restore point now, everytime i do it goes through the whole process and restarts the comp, but then boom. "System could not be restored to that point blah blah blah"

Please help. I'll upload whatever logs are needed, just please help me get my computer running like it once was :D

(And i'm sorry if this is the wrong forum :/, also I apologize for the grammar and spelling mistakes, its late, the babys crying, and im exhausted lol)

Help. Internet explorer keeps freezing on me and when it does, I can't shut down iexplore.exe in the processes. I have a feeling this part of a larger problem since I've had a lot of problems with Vista Home Premiere since I bought this PC a few months ago.
I've run virus scans with both AVG and PC Tools. And scanned for malware with Adaware. (my windows defender will not update.) I just installed hijack this and when I run it, I get 2 error screens before the log.

The first error reads "For some reason your system denied access to the hosts file. If any highjacked domains are in this file, Highjack this may NOT be able to fix this"

The second error reads "An unexpected error has occurred at procedure:ModMain_CheckOther1Item()Error#75-path/file access error

Then I get my log file. Also, I don't know if it is related but I tried to download and install Mozilla Firefox yesterday and I kept receiving an error message saying it could not install.

Here is the log file from Highjack this:

Hello, thank you for taking the time to view this. For some reason some links don't work on my home computer but do at my school. I tried them in both FireFox and IE, and nothing worked.

Links like:

Grinler's HiJackThis Tutorial

Said: "Not Found

The requested URL /forums/HijackThis_Tutorial_How_to_use_HijackThis_to_remov e_Browser_Hijackers_and_Spyware-tut42.html was not found on this server."

But they work perfectly at my school, or at my friends house. I'm starting to think its Mal-Ware vs. a problem with my browsers.

But I have the best of the best (pretty much every program Geek to Go admin's and staff has recommended) Anti Mal-Ware applications, and have been scanning non stop all day, and yesterday. Some have detected 1 or 2 problems, others have not, but nothing is better. I think things are getting worse, because now things are slowing down a lot, and programs are taking longer to open up.....and such.

So here is a HiJackThis Log:

Old, OLD Sony Viao.. been a great workhorse...Problems started with it not booting into XP unless it rested overnight! (Just like me I guess) Real problem is that I need this machine badly to teach classes.
I uploaded all the new drivers on Sony site.
. As long as I use it in the morning it boots.. EXCEPT now the keys are producing errors. Not all, just some.
One forum mentioned problems with bad memory. I have sent for a Memtest disk.. hope that will help confirm.. If so, its a doable fix.
Sony doesn't seem to have a keyboard driver .. I updated drivers for Processor, and Bios.
Any other suggestions??

Hello, I've got a problem with my new battery. Originally I had an ASM 92P1064 battery in my IBM R51 1829 Thinkpad, which was not working anymore as it got old.So I replaced it with an original IBM battery (ASM 92P1090). It needed some time before it first started loading but then it was fine.I loaded it up to 99% and then wanted to test it's capacity. It worked absolutely fine for the duration of an hour but then my laptop (I'm using Windows XP) kind of froze. There was still abot 70% capacity left.I restarted and it froze again. I totally emptied the battery and reloaded but this also didn't help. When it's frozen I can't do anything anymore. Even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. Only the desktop is still working (it only turns black when the battery is empty...) With the power adapter my computer works without problems. So what could be wrong about that new battery? Hope there's anybody who could help me... Thanks for replyNomthandazo

Answer:R51 - battery problems - computer "freezes"

Where did you buy your new replacement battery from? Most batteries have warranty after you buy it, and you might wanna try Battery Calibration in the Power Manager.  If Calibration still fails and Windows freezes, best thing I can recommend before you ask the seller is to reimage your laptop.

I recently just built a computer. The gigabyte board that i bought had a bad vga and sound chipset. I had to buy a video card and it solved the problem. I installed windows xp professional on my sata 320gb maxtor hd. It runs good until about 10 or 15 minutes it just freezes and hangs up on me. I returned my gigabyte board because it was giving me problems so i bought an asus board. When i was taking it all apart to send the board back I took out my hard drive. I saw 4 pins where the jumpers were I left them on the default which is 1.5gb/s. I looked at the manual and it showed the jumper off at 3gb/s. My board has 4 sata 3gb/s slots. Does anyone know if that could be the hangup....not taking the jumper completely off to make it 3gb/s like the ports on my mobo?

Answer:sound problems and computer freezes

 Hello & Welcome to TechSpot

In the future try to use the <Enter>/<Carrige Return> (<CR>) button instead of just ......
It makes it easier for us to read, and makes people more likely to help (as they can actually understand what the problem is).

Anyways, over to the problem.
You say you have tried both boot last known configuration and using system restore?
If you can, try using system restore to restore to the first configuration available.

From what I can find in MS' knowledge base here the problem is with the program which determines what to update and what not to.

What I'd try to do if I were you were boot with my XP cd and then choose "repair installation". Do not choose console, but the other type (word slipped my mind) as it'll replace all the files that has been modified since you installed windows.
This means you have to install the service pack again, and any hotfixes, but at least it should work.

NOTE: Before doing this, I'd make sure I'd have written down all the information wrt to my isp (dial-up number, username, password, any special settings etc) as it might be lost.

That is the only options I can think of right now, but hopefully someone else will be able to come up with other solutions if they don't work.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the help last time. Unfortunately, all of the problems cropped back up within a few days (old thread). Plus, I'm now getting constant warnings from AVG telling me it's found a virus "PSW.Agent.QX". I'd love any suggestions.

I originally posted in the IE8 forum and was transfered to the malware forum who found various malware and cleaned my computer but I still have many problems and they told me to post here.
IE8 still getting blacked out info bars, and while I was going through the process of getting rid by changing to classic view etc etc the desktop went to black and white and froze for about 15 secs.
This morning on bootup I had no sound so went into control panel to adjust but got the message the windows volume control was not installed. Repaired that by using my XP cd but then found that IE8 had disappeared. I looked in my programs and found the IE folder but there wasn't an IE exe file, only.dll's etc
Downloaded and reinstalled IE8 but I have the same problem I can't find the .exe file to put a shortcut onto my desktop.
Strange thing is that when I click on a web page link IE8 opens.

What is likely to happen next!!!

Answer:[SOLVED] Many Problems-getting worse

Hi davecabezo,

Can you run a chkdsk. There are a couple of way you can do this:

1] First way Windows Key+R and type CMD and hit Enter. At the command prompt type 'chkdsk /r' (without the quotes) and hit Enter. (it may ask you to reboot, so press Y and then Enter)

2] Second Way Go My Computer and Right click on Local Disk (C:) and select 'Properties'. Then under the 'Tools' tab click on 'Check Now' next to Error Checking. In the small window that opens put a tick in both boxes and press 'Start'. It will say 'Windows can't check the disk while in use'. Just click 'Schedule disk check' and then OK. Reboot, and it will run on the next startup. This will check and try to fix any bad sectors on your hard disk.

Let us know if any bad sectors are found during stages 1 to 5. chkdsk may take a while to run depending on the size of your HDD.

Hello all, im new here and i only have basic computer knowledge so be easy on me please...

Ok so i think ive screwed up my pc.

My problems started with slow running ie. I have a really crappy computer, but all i use it for is basic surfing and media downloads. So anyway IE was running slow as crap so i figure it must be a virus/spyware whatever so i run SuperAntiSpyware and it doesnt find anything. I run AVG and it doesnt find anything either. I then run disk defrag. My computer tells me i dont need defrag. I cleared my cache of temp internet files/cookies/ etc. and my problems still persist.

And here where i undoubtibly made things worse. I get the idea that i might need to reinstal zone alarm. So i do and notice that generic host process 32 rpc is continuiously using the internet. I vaugely remembered disabling it last year when i first instaled Zone alarm. So i disable it via My Computer > Manage > Servises and aplications and then on remote procedure call i disabled it. i wanted to change the start-up on it to manual but the option was greyed out so i just disabled it entirely. What harm could it do right?

Oh and thats not all, while on my mission to figure out how to disable RPC i fiddled around with a few options under My computer > Properties. I edited some stuff within the remote and advanced tab but i dont remember exactly what all i did. I made a change to the performance and it made me restart the pc but without all the fancy windows and stuff... Read more

Hello blumilk, Welcome to TSF!

Try powering up the computer from a 'Cold Start', while continually tapping the F8 Key.
In the "Safe Mode" Menu select the option "Last Known Good Configuration", and follow the on-screen prompts.

If this does not fix the issue, there are other alternatives that we can try.

Post back with the outcome.

Kind Regards,

I have had several problems with my comp for awhile, progressively getting worse with the newest being the blue screen errors popping up whilst in the middle of working on the comp & shutting the comp down automatically. Explorer windows pop up one after the other even when it's not error screens also upon shut down, at restart sometimes icons do not appear properly & unable to do anything-have to restart manually...etc.
I will post my HJT log but wondering ahead if I should just start from scratch, however, this worries me..everyone says, besides the obvious backing up what you want before you reinstall, that it's easy, should be no problems getting it all back up but I can't afford to have a problem with the reinstall & end up with no comp up. I was told before on here that I have enormous amounts of malware, etc. & was told by one "My guess is that it would be quicker to start over. It depends on how comfortable you are with the registy and stuff. Sometimes it is kinda fun to chase the little guys, but if you don't have the patience/time/experience, it is better to cut and run."
NOTE: I know Ad-Aware is suggested most of the time, I CANNOT run this on my comp, even the latest download shuts down my computer when I try to run it.

In the last few months my windows XP home edition started getting a bunch of errors.

- IE showing script errors many times
- task manager not working
- disk won't defragment
- cannot open msconfig

Someone told me to install the service packs and updates so I gave it a try. The update didn't fix my problems, but instead made a bunch more. After I installed SP1 I went back to the windows update and installed all the critical updates.

- Microsoft Kernel system audio driver is missing and I cannot find a driver to replace it. I cannot play any sounds now.

- A blank error window shows up literally every 5 seconds. It has a red X icon and an ok button, but doesn't show any text.

- Taskmanager still won't work. I press alt+ctrl+del and then the fan on my computer spins really fast, then the green resources icon shows up in the taskbar for a little while, but taskmanager won't open.

Please help me, I am ready to smash my computer now from the irritating error window.

We had some bad storms come in and in the midst of shutting down my computer the electricity went out briefly. The computer came back on and the display was fine. I proceeded to got ahead and shut everything down. The following afternoon, when I turned on my computer... the display was cloudy, had a green tint and I had no internet connection. After a few hours with my internet provider technical support, they told me that I needed a new network card and I would be better off buying a new computer. I simply used the USB cable that came with my modem to bypass the ethernet. Now I have an internet connection again but, my display is still bad and is steadily getting worse. Now everything is darker and has a blue tint. I made the mistake of stopping by a repair shop and speaking to someone about getting a new video card. I was told computers aren't built these days to add onto.    I may not know much about computers but, I know better than that. Yes, my video card is part of the motherboard but I do have a PCI Express slot available. Is it my card or do I need to replace the cord or it is something else? What do I need to fix?

Answer:Display problems only getting worse!

Try borrowing a screen to test first, to see if it is the monitor. Then try to borrow a known working PCI-e card, as yes, if yours is built in to the motherboard, it will allow you to use another card.generally however, this sounds to me like more of a monitor issue than a video card issue, as the colour changed, and I believe if the onboard card was that messed up, it shouldn't boot.

I ran through the malware process and it picked up 1 bug, but my software is getting flakier and flakier. It started with my MSOffice losing its product code and now every time I go into any component, it reconfigures. Of course, I thought I had the code in my email and cannot locate it. The software disk doesn't have it with it...So, I've been living with it until the piece of paper I should have printed and put with the disk shows up again.

So, I went into Outlook yesterday and found all these undeliverable emails which was my first clue. After running through the malware process, those seem to have stopped. The only problem, when I went to set a new recovery point, my windows expl keeps shutting down now. I right click on just about anything and I get the warning that Win Expl has stopped working. It recovers, restarts...Now every shortcut, is not working. My sound is not playing. I can only get into my browser by calling it up through another program...

I have previously tried to fix everything, but now it's time for help.

I don't know where to begin. I am running Windows7, MSOffice10. My I/N Expl is Chrome. Tell me what you need or where do I go to get you a list of what software/hardware I have?

I'm getting very frustrated. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I'm having a problem whereby my computer freezes as soon i insert either my ipod, or other portable media device (512MB flash drive/mp3 player). As soon as it goes in, the computer freezes and i have to restart, its very strange and annoying. Anyone else had this problem?

Answer:Problems with USB portable devices - computer freezes

I would first check the physical port. Make sure there aren't any bent pins and no shorts.
If the physical is fine, I would perhaps check for updates to your motherboard drivers, and possibly the USB drivers specifically, if available.

I suppose it freezes when using ANY port? You should have at least 2, try them all.

It's a start, good luck

I wasn't sure if I should put this under malware or vista...

For a couple months my computer has been extremely slow to do anything 70% of the time, including simple things like open a folder, play an mp3, open control panel, etc. It has occasionally had periods (several days in a row) where it will run really loud for 5 seconds before shutting down and restarting on its own. When it does this it does it consistently every 45 minutes. Then it will go a week or so without doing that all on its own. (I have been good about keeping the vents clean and blowing out the interior).

But last week, sister in law came in from Miss., and used facebook a great deal(that's the only change we can think of), which we've never used, and the computer went nuts. Now it freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes after starting in normal mode. The power button has to be held down to shut it off and then pushed again to start again. It starts and runs fine in safe mode with networking, no problems. But starting up in normal mode now, it consistently has a problem starting either 4 or 5 times in a row, each progressively worse, with windows wanting to do a startup repair on the last one, before finally starting successfully in normal mode, only to freeze shortly thereafter. It will freeze whether we're doing anything or not.

I have Trendmicro antivirus and their help site told me to run Hijackthis which I did and then it suggested posting that log in one of these for... Read more

Hello everyone, I built a new computer 3 weeks ago. I have a problem and I would like to have some advice since nothing I read on the forums worked. Worked flawlessly for 2 weeks. One week ago, i got some lag/buzzing sound in my headphones every now and then (lag lasting 5 secs); youtube, skype, Borderlands 2.The day after, I would have this lag every 4 mins (like clockwork) and it would still last 5 secs. Now, the lags do not happen that often but my computer freezes when i play games. The freezes are very random since they can appear after 2, 3 or 5 hours; always in different areas of the game. Here is what happens when my computer freezes. I can use my keyboard to access task manager. However, when I am in, I can't control my mouse (I can control my mouse when I am in the windows 8 menu to get to task manager). Therefore, I force start it with the front button. When I press it, I hear a loud buzzing sound in my headphones (probably the sound of whatever is playing in loop) until it shots downs. When it restarts, I still hear the buzzing sound very loud in my headphones but I have full control of my computer. I can therefore restart it properly with the windows menu. When the computer boots again, it's like it never happened. So I have some questions. Do you think the lags and the freezes are related? How come the problems appear now after 2 weeks (I didn't install anything in between). If it would be a hardware problem, I guess I would have problems all the time? Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

For the past week I've been having problems with the display on my T61. At first it would just freeze for a few seconds and then tell me that nvlddmkm stopped responding and has recovered, then sometimes it would freeze up completely and show me weird snowy patches. Updating my display driver (NVIDIA quadro NVS M140) seems, if anything, to have made things worse, since display became garbled immediately from startup (when it presumably isn't even using the new display driver), though it did sometimes show something resembling what should be on the screen instead of just snowy patches. Once I managed to see through the snow to uninstall my driver, and then I went back to just having these nvlddmkm recoveries and occasional freezes, but when I updated BIOS and my display drivers, it went back to garbling everything, beginning at startup. Any ideas?

I am not computer savvy at all, mostly use it for surfing and emails, etc. Anyway, have had this one for a few years now, and I am getting spyware one it that I cannot get rid of, about blank for one! Okay, when I do get a new computer, what protection software should I buy and install on it? What is the best out there in other words? Any body have some ideas...or what you use that works? Thanks a lot!

Answer:Spyware is worse then Virus problems?

My personal opinion, Windows XP Home Edition or Professional Edition with Windows XP Service Pack 2 is a start for security. For software I would suggest Norton AntiVirus 2005 for the antivirus. For spyware I would highly suggest SpySweeper, this program has worked wonders for me as in protecting me from spyware infections. If you have WinXP, SP2, NAV, SpySweeper you should stay clean from malware and worms. However you can still be infected if you visit unsafe sites. Hope this helps. Browse Safely!

Hi guys,
Like all sensible people I decided to google my issue only after I had taken my laptop's life into my own hands. A problem cropped up on my laptop on Friday and I assumed it was something to do with working on an unsecured wifi connection fr the past several months and thought I had probably picked up a virus, so without a second thought I did what I had always done in the past and did a factory reset, which I now know was a really stupid thing to do.
When it started up again I was being asked to activate windows which had never happened before and as it was pre-installed (and MS hotline were not at all inclined to help me out) I had no idea how to fix it. Skip a few hours later and a well-meaning flatmate actually reset my laptop a second time in as many days while I was away.
The problems now are that most of my admin tools are disabled (time and date are also completely off), I appear to be connected to the internet but can't leave the homepage (and am told every other website has an outdated security certificate and cannot get through the warning screen) and I am being asked to activate windows again.
I ran malwarebytes, superantispyware and Avast scans in safe mode after the reset and they can't pick up anything. My unit is about 8 months old, it's had a lot of problems with the software in the past like the update to 8.1 crashing it at least 2 times but no major virus attacks.

A few months back i started having crashes on the 2 games i play(Pacific Assault+PKR 3D Poker).
I thought that my old graphics card was the problem(radeon 9200) and as i had never upgraded my P.C. i felt i must be time.
I upgraded from a 250w PSU to a 630w and also put in a Sapphire 1650 pro 516mb but my problems are far worse now than before.I installed a fresh windows after the upgrade and now im at a complete dead end

Pacific Assault crashes right after i hit the start game button with either going right back to the desktop or to a BSOD saying ATIVVAXX.DLL and "dumping physical memory to disk:101"..i have it set at 800X600 medium settings.

PKR crashes to a PKR crash report screen or a BSOD "ATI3DVAG.DLL or to the desktop,i have it set on all low settings.

Also for no reason internet explorer seems to crash to a "send a report screen" quite alot.

Ive no idea what to do about this.....changed the graphics card, installed a new windows(sp2)

im at the end of the road with the pc....if anyone has any ideas about what else could cause these crashes it would help alot,im not sure if the bios could cause the problem but i dont know were to look now

thx jack

My computer was rebooting after waking from sleep mode with the stop error 0x00000024. There were no hard drive issues (I have just a new ssd and an external), so I tried updating the bios with the Gigabyte @bios utility. On reboot was another stop error, 0x0000007B.

I tried doing a system restore form startup repair, and it was unable to complete, stop 0x8000ffff.

Last known good didn't work, nor safe mode. I ran out of options so I came here. The only thing I can think of next is resetting the cmos.

Answer:numerous boot problems, from bad to worse

It turns out that there's a known issue with Corsair ssds and sleep mode. It boots plenty fast, but I was accustomed to using sleep as a way of reducing wear and tear on the mobo.

As for 0x0000007B error, I'm able to boot for now, not sure what was causing it.

I have two Hotmail accounts -- one I use for work-related, and one for personal. I usually access them from home with Outlook 2010.
About a week ago, the one I use for Personal stopped getting new messages. I later found out I couldn't send any either, they were just being stored in the "Out"  box. When I checked the status bar, I saw the "#80041004 - Error in Synchronizing Folder Hierarchy" error. I was able to log on, however, through
I immediately started searching the web for answers, and I tried everything that was suggested:
 - Checked the date/time on my computer
 - Checked the "Proxy Server" settings in both Firefox and IE
 - Making sure all the folders were in the root directory
 - Removed the account, and tried to re-add it
 - Removed the entire profile and tried to create a new one
Here's TWO funny things:
1) A few days ago (can't remember which day,) I had Office open (for my other email acct) and all of a sudden, the "broken" email account downloaded a few messages. I was glad, thinking it might have just been a temporary glitch, but the next day, it stopped again.
2) I got the bright idea to open "Windows Live Mail (which I used to use), but when I entered my password (it's changed since I last used it) it tells me it's not valid. It's the same password I use on, so I don't know why it won't work. Ever since I tried it, I'm not unable to re-add the Account in Office -- I'm getting a "0x80041059 ... Read more

My system has experienced several different problems - unsure if they are related, but they have all occurred in very close proximity of each other.

1. SYSTEM INFORMATIONIBM Lenovo W500 [Machine]
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 [OS version]
Intel Core2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.8GHz [Processor]
2027 MB [Memory]

2.1. WiFi Function Removed{Attachment_1}Problems began on 10/18/2010, when my system lost all WiFi capabilities. My event log showed that at 4:54:41AM (while I was sleeping) several components or drivers were removed including: [Intel ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port - 2942] and [Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100].

> Workaround: Uninstall/Reinstall in Device Manager returned WiFi functionality to system.
2.2. Locked Desktop (background screen only) Problems returned several days later when my Windows Log-on brought me to a blank desktop screen with NO GUI access to system: Drives, Taskbar, Programs, Start Menu.

Note: I was able to bring up Task Manager via ctrl-alt-del, then from there open up Task Manager's "Help Topics", found a text file that I could "open with" Microsoft OneNote which then allowed me to use "contact us" link to get me online. But this was the extent of my systems functionality.

I currently am having problems with my EMachines T4510 (sorry don't have my exact specs - suppose to be Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.53GHz, Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition, 512MB DDR (PC2100) Memory, 100GB Hard Drive, CD-RW Drive).

It all started in January when my computer kept freezing up and not powering up properly (low buzz, some lights on, nothing on monitor - Sometimes it would take about 10 starts to actually start up properly). After about 3-4 weeks of the freezing and start up problems, the power completely failed and the computer would no longer receive any power (the fan in the power supply had a slight odor of burnt plastic).

I could not see and visible damage to any part of the motherboard, so I went ahead and replaced the power supply with the same type. The computer booted up perfectly after I replaced the power supply, but there was still problems. The sound device was not working at all (i forgot the error message that came from media player). The computer was also running slow. In the Windows Task Manager my CPU Usage was constantly at 100% with the only process using anything being "System" at 98-100 of the CPU.

Hoping to fix my problems the easy way, I burnt a CD with all my important files on it using this slow computer (it took about a half hour - usually takes less than 5 minutes). Then I put my restore disk in and did a complete system restore (took about 7-10 minutes to complete). Sadly, Windows Xp froze during the 1st start-... Read more

Well this all happened after I accidentally clicked a "you have won a million dollars" pop up in the middle of a site. Every minute now my computer is getting worse and worse, Half of my desktop is filled with random programs now and more just keep coming. I've tried symantec antivirus, spybot S&D, and adaware, and nothing is working. I have been keeping up on windows updates as well so I can't imagine how things have gotten so screwed up in fifteen minutes. As a last resort I ran hijackthis and saved the log. Hopefully someone here can help me. Adaware will delete 220 objects then ill run it immediately after and 300 objects will be infected. I have no idea what's going on and I'm about to scream. My PC is having multiple issues, even after trying the R&R scans. Only SAS and Malwarebytes completed without any issues. The last scan, MGTools, ended with a blue screen. Combofix never started the scan portion, even after waiting 3 hours. Root Repeal seemed to finish, but came up with a message about an inaccessable memory block and then the computer shut down.

The current problems I'm having: Google redirect (IE); Hard drive errors (last one was right after power on); programs not opening over time; almost all files on computer are hidden; message about corrupt files in recycle bin (even though it's empty); volume doesn't work; some file on my desktop called "settings.dat" that was created today and, according to it's properties, opens with daemon tools pro.

These are the only logs I have. I'm not sure what the MGTools log will show after the blue screen incident. If there is any step that may seem like I missed it, trust me, I did everything I my PC would allow me to do in its current condition.

Answer:Need help! Computer going from bad to worse.

Also, Combofix started off by telling me that ESET antivirus was running. That can't be possible since I uninstalled it right before I started the R&R cleaning.

I have a desktop computer than runs Windows XP, plus a laptop running Vista. Some months ago, the desktop started to get bombarded with emails from pharmacies, possibly because I searched for info on a particular drug. My security at that time was set low. Deleting them one by one wasn't practical, so I followed advice I saw in a newspaper articlIe and downloaded Ad-Ware, CCleaner, and one other program I've since deleted. I also deleted all cookies. Nothing worked.

I then tried using the email filter and "message rules" to block certain senders and to delete messages where the topic included particular words. That helped a little. Then out of the blue I started getting emails about Viagra, and you can guess where that led. As an older woman who does not go to porn sites, I was totally p.o.'d. I wrote to the sender, a friend
of mine, in indignation, only to find he didn't send it; he got a virus that sent it to everyone in his mailing list. I did scans for the virus; found nothing. I did every kind of scan I could think of, which led nowhere.

Then a new development occured: nothing came to my inbox anymore; everything went to the deleted folder or to the junk mail folder, including valid emails from people on my contact list. How can I regroup here and stop the junk while allowing my contacts? You guys have helped me before; I sure hope you can help with this!

So since last year, my computer has random BSOD or Reboots. Since it happens every few months, I just dealt with it. I dealt with the fact that I naturally had a old, crap computer. I assumed there was no viruses because my AV didn't pick up anything. Also used Malwarebytes or something with a similar name, since I can't remember off the top of my head.

By the way, a few weeks ago I downloaded XPThemes just to customize my desktop.
I followed these methods. How To Install Ux Theme Multi Patcher - (maybe this could shed some light?)

Then the other day, I google imaged a picture of Brock because I wanted to photoshop a "wanted list". One of the sites I went to, which ironically I used last time because it's the same picture gave me a trojan. According to AVG. I looked it up and people described an identical problem with me, which was they googled it. My AVG detected and I assumed it removed it, so I moved on with my life.

I also installed a recent Java update to my computer. That's when I noticed things were starting to get suspicious. My computer were starting to show signs of malfunction. When I use Google Chrome, I often get crashed from using sites like GameFAQs, Youtube and Facebook. Then my computer would reboot. I would also often get rebooted every 3 minutes, until I stopped the "restart on system failure message". I started to get BSOD. Then I took a break from the computer and went on my business. I then logged... Read more

When booting to Safe Mode, you will get scrolling file names, and eventually it will load Safe Mode, it may take up to 5 minutes.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a BSOD associated with a bad driver. Usually a Video/Display driver or Ethernet Network Adapter. But in your case you are probably infected. After updating your drivers, Head over to the Security Section of this Forum and post there for more help.

When I booted up my computer this morning, Windows loaded, I signed in, and then it took nearly an hour and a half to get the program icons to come up on the desktop. When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. It seems like all the resources are under use, but no one can see what's bogging it down. Can you look at the attached HiJackThis log and let me know if you can see the problem.

A few days ago I noticed some odd things with my computer, it would start off with thing like me loading a Myspace page and the music player not loading etc, then progressively over the past few days its been getting worse and worse, to the point where I can only view my hotmail page just as I turn the comp on, but about 15 mins after its been turned on the page refuses to load, many links on websites wont load, MSN disconnects itself and wont reconnect and now my most recent issue of the internet disconnecting itself at times.

Usualy if a problems cropped up, Spybot or Adaware usually flushes it out, but neither of those programs when run normally, or in safe mode have done the job, Ive tried all I can think of and even my brother doesnt know whats wrong, and thats usually quite rare ; )

So I did some further research and have seen that some problems have been resolved via a Hijackthis log, which I will post a log for my computer in the hope that my problem can be resolved as my life is becoming much more difficult with me living through this machine nearly all of the time hehe.

Ad-aware and Spybot are both a little too big, but HijackThis can fit on, and in fact be run from, a floppy disk. Copy HJT from your machine to a floppy, take it to your FIL's machine and run it. Copy the log back onto to floppy, take it back to your machine, and them post.

It started off with opening any sort of media application, like a video or a game, and after having it go for 2-3 minutes, the screen would hard-lock, a various assortment and array of colored pixels would sprawl across the screen, jumbling it and making it completely unreadable, and, if any sound was occuring at the time of the freeze, it would loop continuously in a most annoying fashion. I shut down the computer and restarted.

It then progressed into a much worse state where, upon start-up, the black screen (the computer is a Dell XPS 730, by the way. Graphics card being a Nvidia 9800 GT, with Intel Quad Core Q6600 processors, at 2.4GHz. The PC is two years old) with the big blue 'DELL' logo, would have flickering pixels scattered across the screen, being much more prominent than before, making the screen THAT MUCH more unreadable. There were also various colored 'smiley-face' icons at various spots across the screen (these appeared most-prominently when I attempted to open my BIOS menu to find some means of fixing this. The screen was riddled with them). I wondered if this was a hardware malfunction at this point, or some sort of virus. I wasn't sure why hardware malfunctioning would cause a large portion of the screwed-up pixelated garbage to be taunting smiley-face emotes. The pixelation of the screen was so bad, I could not even SEE the Microsoft-icon button to press and enter my password for login (OS is Windows Vista 32-bit). I had to shut-d... Read more

So I have a lenovo sl500 laptop, that runs windows vista home basic.
I went to turn it on yesterday, and it did all the normal things.
It went to the thinkpad lenovo screen, then gave a windows progress bar at the bottom ( like it usually does ) gives the circular vista icon and sound, and then brings up the user login screen. I log on, it says welcome, and brings me to a black black screen. I have a mouse on screen that responds to movement, but not respond to right or left click. It stays here and doesn't load the home screen. I have run the memory test application from the start up. It said I had an error # 8603. I have found that this means CMOS checksum bad. I have run the setup bios utility, and set everything to manufacturer defaults. Still nothing. I hav checke the back up battery, and it meters at 3.1 v ( Which is good..) so. Do I have a bad motherboard, possibly a bad hard drive? Whoever can help it would be appreciated.

I built a computer 2 days ago (Tuesday) with the help of a guy I know. It has an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, an NVidia graphics card ( forgot the model, but has 512 Mb), a 1Tb seagate SATA hdd, forgot what the DVD-CD Burner was, an LG775 Dual-Core Intel Processor, 2x2 Gb of RAM, a 600W power supply, and 6 decent fans between it all (2 on the case, 1 on the power supply, a on the CPU, 1 on the motherboard, and 1 on the video card). When I installed xp SP3 and installed the drivers, the hdd was conflicting with the motherboard driver and the guy found a patch for the driver which fixed the problem. Last night though (Wednesday), I had been installing software all day long (such as photoshop, WoW, etc.). I was letting the WoW patches download (950 Mb), and a couple of other downloads finish over night, but I decided to make it sleep overnight. This morning however, It froze I guess mid-start and I had to restart it. I tried to start WoW and firefox and they would load in the task manager, but get nowhere (WoW was sitting at 76 b, and firefox at 3,260Kb). I restarted one more time, then they wouldn't load at all, I ran a scan with AVG 8.0 free, bu I had it shut down after it finished since I was gonna be gone all day. Now I can't find where it would save a log of the results, and it isn't even running now, background processes in the task manager won't even fully load. When I try to start ANY program now, it won't even start loading in the task manager. When I end a process... Read more

Answer:just built a computer, now it won't run anything and seems to be getting worse!

Hi !

What's the exact brand and model of the video card (nvidia is the chip maker, not the manufacturer) and what's the exact brand and model of the power supply ?

Enter the BIOS at startup (press del), locate the hardware monitor screen and give us the temps, fan speeds and voltages (+3.3, +5 and +12V) you'll see there.

Remove the 2 case fans and leave only one memory stick in the first DIMM slot (XP 32bit can't use 4GB anyway). See if it helps.

I have no clue at all what is wrong.
System keeps turning off (I mean OS I guess is what keeps shutting down as opposed to the power actually going off).
Now it seems far worse after running C Cleaner. I usually Wise Registry Cleaner but my system has been almost at the edge of lock up a lot lately.
I run the following at least two times a week:
Iobit Defrag and Optimize
Wise Registry Cleaner

and a couple more.

Any ideas?

Answer:Computer keeps shutting down. Worse CC

Excellent advice. I don't know why I didn't think of that backup myself.

As for the phantom SP3 error problem in December, it suddenly quit coming up. Not sure how that happened, but am really glad it finally just stopped happening.

Just recently my computer has started to reboot itself with monotonous regularity. I am running XP on an 1800xp machine. It apears to happen after using programs like MS Publisher etc, in fact it has become almost impossible to use Publisher as it crashes so often. Today I tried to do a disc cleanup on my C drive and this proved to be impossible as it crashed out almost as soon as it started to do the initial check. The error message that I get is as follows.C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\mini080403.dmpC:\DOCUME~\Arthur\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xmlThis is the most regular error message. Is there anyone out there that can throw light on this for me as I really could do without having to reformat and go through all of the grief of setting up again.Thanking you for any help.

Answer:Computer taken a turn for the worse

A reformat should always be the last option and I suspect that it is more likely to be a memory problem.First of all check to make sure that it is properly in place by (with the PC disconnected from the power supply) opening up the PC tower and using the side clips to pop the RAM stick out and then reinsert it. If the PC still won't work then click here to test your memory. If it is properly in place and the test shows there to be a problem then it is best to get some from click here as their Memory Selector will help you pick the right memory for your PC. There turn around is very quick and anything ordered tonight you should have by Wednesday. If you have more than one memory stick then test each one independantly to see which is faulty but remember that there should always be a stick in Rimm 1 on your motherboard so a bit of switching around is required. Hope this helps.

hi,, I hope someone can help me.. My computer is REALLY, REALLY slow... no matter if I am on the net OR just working on the desktop, it takes forever to do anything.. I have run all the diognostic, restore and clean up programs I can think of, but still no improvement...I have xp, 3ghd, 256 ram.. not sure what else is needed but thats a start..thankyouvicky :-?

Answer:computer is worse then a turtle...

Your hard disk is only 3 GB? Are you sure?    Also, 256 is enough to slow a system down pretty well. What programs do you have running in the background while on the computer? Which antivirus protector do you have? Are you sure that you're virus free?Flame

Long story made short. About a year ago my laptop crashed, I panicked and went to K-Mart and bought a Toshiba Satellite C55D, cheap laptop (400$) but I needed internet access that same day. Right outta the box I had issues, lots of lag and I have Charter high speed, no problems before. Computer just stops for like a minute at the time, Called Toshiba and the situation got worse. They said they didn't warranty the software which they claimed to be the problem, wanted me to pay 150$ for tech support on a brand new laptop. I refused and have struggled with this laptop ever since. I will never buy anything else made by Toshiba again. I have a AMD E1 Processor. Can't even watch Netflix some days. Can anyone help?
Thanks LD

I've upgraded my HP Pavillion bought last year with Windows 8.1 pre-installed to Windows 10 this August. From the beginning I could not shut down my PC by going to start>shut down, but I have to shut it down by pressing the physical power button; my bluetooth also stopped working. I've tried several times to get help from Microsoft, but they couldn't do anything. I was hoping the November update will fix those issues but things even got much worse: Now I don't have the option "send to" when clicking the right click at all; my Intel Smart Connect is disabled, and there are also a few minor issues. I've had a session with the guy from Microsoft online support and after an hour he couldn't do anything (although he was being polite and tried everything I've already tried myself). So, now I'm stucked with this c*ap and the only thing I can do is to reset the PC to the factory settings, return to the Windows 8.1 and reinstal all the apps from the scratch (a whole day work, at least). From my experience (and I'm with Microsoft since Windows 98), Windows 10 is absolutely the worst Windows ever (even NT and Vista were better). I'll stick with this sh*t for another month hoping someone in Microsoft will do something about it and then I'll return to 8.1. Or do you have any other idea?

Answer:Windows 10: Problems from the start, November upgrade even worse. What do I do?

I have another idea for you.
All the issues you are describing look like they can easily be caused by system driver issues. HP has been known to have a number of problems with drivers since the switch to 10. HP is the one responsible to make sure the appropriate drivers are available for the HP hardware in your system.
Check on the HP support site for updated drivers for your system. Get fresh copies of all of them and install them. You'll need drivers for Bluetooth, chipset, Intel Smart Connect, and everything else they have available.
Let us know how it works for you. It's certainly easier than trying to reset to factory settings, and if HP has the proper drivers available, it will also make your PC go from the worst experience ever to possibly the best experience ever.
Mine was horrid until I got the drivers fixed. Ever since then, I've been loving it and everything has worked just as it should. The manufacturer of my laptop did provide the appropriate drivers, so I was in luck with that one.

No matter what we try the computer gets worse. First the cd rom quit working. When you  put a disk in you can see it reading it, but nothing else ever happens. Well Now IE and FireFox are not working. Can't connect to the internet, but can connect wirelessly with a laptop. I've tried a system restore there is nothing to restore to so can't do that. Can't do windows update because I have on internet explorer. AVG is not working now and it's getting slower and slower. I ran a Dell PC recovery on it and it only made thing worse. That's when AVG quit working. AHHHH Well that's the biggest of the problems. Small one is hubby is trying to play warhammer, but it keeps saying conflicting with musicmatch jukebox and I can't delete jukebox, computer won't let me.     HELP!!!

Problem now Solved

Friends HP Pavilion running windows XP original problems were card reader was not working and no sound from speakers. When went to take hard drive home we were short on time and didn't shut it down just pulled power supply out from the back, said it would be right to do as done it over the years lots on mine and never missed a beat.
When got it home to power it up it came up with To Reboot properly or install CD.

The boot priority in the Bios goes CD - HDD - Network - Floppy

But it shoes the CD is the only one installed

Have done all the usual hitting of F1 F2 F8 F10 F12

Can enter set up but no improvements are made, help please , he needs his computer by the end of the day ?

Hi all,
I know this is and old-school post but I'm having problems with my laptop just chewing up CPU and Memory for no obvious reason (to me) even when idling. I'm running Windows XP with 4GB RAM (I know it only accepts 3GB of it) and twin Intel 1.5Ghz processors which should cause XP to run fine. It also takes a long time to boot, showing a black screen with a single flashing white cursor which it never used to do. This screen lasts for around 30 seconds before windows kicks in. I have tested my laptop using various anti-virus and spyware software (1 at a time!) and found nothing. I have also run HijackThis and below is the log post, if that helps anyone identify the problem. Also, I have a 150GB HD with 127GB free, and I have defragged it etc. Here's hoping for a solution.
