Laptop makes a really loud grinding noise

Question: Laptop makes a really loud grinding noise

So i was using my Compaq Evo N620c laptop( Windows XP) and i put it on stand by. When i came back, i started the laptop up and it started making a really loud high pitched noise almost like a whistle. I restarted the laptop and it started making the same noise. I went on safe mode and the noise stopped and everything louded perfectly. Than when i went back on my regular account and it started making the noise again. The noise only starts at the blue loading screen for XP. I had this laptop for 2 years and this is the first time this ever happened.

Will the noise stop if I open up my laptop and use a duster ( high pressure air) and i take out all the dust out of my fan and hard drive?

Thank You

Preferred Solution: Laptop makes a really loud grinding noise

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Laptop makes a really loud grinding noise

No way to tell for sure what the noise is coming from with the info provided. Could be a fan, could be a hard drive. I suggest you go ahead and try blowing the dust out with canned air through the cooling vents. Use short bursts instead of a continuous blast. First blow air into the exhaust port first, then into the intake port. Repeat until no more dust appears.

Try one thing first... mute the sound. Audio hardware can do some strange stuff.

Hello,

My CD drive is making loud noises. This doesn't occur all the time. For example,I'm watching a DVD - Criminal Minds Season 4 and it allowed me to watch the episodes fine but when I tried to watch a deleted scene, it made this loud grinding noise and it wouldn't stop even when I clicked stopped in Windows Media Player. It only stopped when I removed the DVD.

This also occurred when I was watching another DVD, I was trying to skip through it and it made that loud grinding noise again but it still played after it got to where I wanted it to be. But with the Criminal Minds DVD, it won't work even when I leave the DVD grinding to see if it'll go to the deleted scene.

I don't understand what's going on. I barely used it before but now it's acting up. I never dropped my laptop or hit it.

I'm attaching the sound it makes. I hope there's a way I can fix this on my own.

Btw, the deleted scene worked on my sister's Toshiba laptop. It made no loud noises. It was smooth.

Edit: Here is the sound it makes. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...int=file%2cm4a It's the one named DVD drive

Answer:Asus Laptop CD Drive Makes Loud Grinding Noise

A DVD drive will make noise. Whirring and a little bit of clunking and ticking are normal, but a solid grinding sound does not sound good. You may have to replace that DVD drive.

Just finished installing my upgrades to my computer, including a nice new H100, and it would appear my hopes for a silent PC one day have been blown out of the water, with this cooler at least. The pump unit is making a sound like...well...a loud pump really, a constant grinding/buzzing/humming noise, kinda like a failing hard drive spinning. I know for a fact they are not meant to perform this way, and I have read many topics about this, but I am a little uncertain still.

Has anyone actually encountered this problem and/or knows how to fix it? Replies I have seen involve:

-Shaking it/bending pipes/generally moving it about (perhaps moving air bubbles?)
-Lowering the voltage (apparently at 12V the pump can be prone to this)

Obviously the shaking/moving thing is a pain cause you just gotta keep doing it till it works (or doesn't), and it requires the removal of the block which requires thermal paste to be reapplied, etc, pain in the ass. The voltage thing sounds very plausible, but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it.

Can anyone give me a specific/accurate explanation of what the noise is and/or how I can (prefereably not might, but rather can) fix this?

Thanks.

Answer:H100 pump makes somewhat loud grinding noise

Update:

This site here had quite a few solutions such as those I mentioned earlier:
Corsair H100 pump noise

I have tried tapping the pipes, that only made it a bit louder, and I've cycled through the pump settings but that has done nothing. I don't want to remove the block because I'm in debt and I have no thermal paste I can use if I need to replace what is on there already which is probably a good idea. I have no molex to molex adapter I can use to make a makeshift voltage adapter either. Bit of a predicament :P

I had closed my laptop cover a few minutes before (or maybe much less?) so it was in some state of hybernation. When I opened it, I pressed the power button and it made such a loud, high-pitched noise that it was piercing and my ears are still ringing from it.

Any ideas? I timidly started it up and it seems to be working just fine. I'm backing it up now.

Thanks, Peter

Dell Inspiron 3721 - 3 yrs old, running Windows 10  Started making loud clicking noise when trying to boot - sometimes it would boot, sometimes I had to try and restart a few times. It clicks about once per 1 or 2 seconds, then never starts up.

Answer:Laptop makes loud clicking noise when trying to boot

Hi Janbiv2
Thanks for writing to us.
Please run diagnostics from f12 menu and observe for any clicking noise during test.
The noise could be either from fan or from the HD.
You can remove the HD and try on another machine if possible or try another HD on this machine.
Also run the machine without the HD and observe if the noise stops.
Do keep us posted about the test results.

I got Counter Strike Global Offensive on my laptop, and as soon as it started running this very high pitched deafening sound started coming from my mic. I cannot seem to fix it.

Answer:I got CSGO on my laptop and now it makes a loud feedback noise

Does the noise continue when you use the mic with anything else that has recording/mic capabilities?

If it does, then there something wrong with the microphone. If it doesn't the it is probably with the game.

Well, the problem could be that upon launching "CSGO" your mic is automatically adjusted to be the at its highest sensitivity.

To fix this, please do the following.

1. Load "Steam", then go into "SteamApps".
2. Next click "Common", then select "CounterStrike:GO"
3. Click on "CSGO", then "CFG" and finally "config".
4. Open the "config" with Notepad or Notepad++
5. Now, in Notepad, click on "Edit" and then "Find Next".
6. Type the following in the "Find Next" window... voice_mixer_volume "1.0"
7. Change it to the ammount you want.
1.0 = 100%
0.50 = 50%
0.25 = 25%

8. Now save the "config" file.

You sould no longer have the problem.

Hi everyone,
I have a really annoying problem with my Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop. Whenever I want to play games on it, the laptop fans start to make an unbearably loud noise that just doesn't let me play at all. This even happens with relatively old games with low system requirements, such as age of empires 3 and league of legends.
This laptop is supposed to be good for gaming, but the fan noise problem makes playing video games virtually impossible. It looks like the computer is going to overheat and break down at any moment. I bought this laptop almost three months ago. Is there something Dell can do about my problem? Can I get a new laptop under warranty? Maybe it's just a specific problem with the one I bought.
Please give me some solutions, thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, about 4 years old.

I've had this problem for a while now. Whenever I take my laptop inside my bedroom, unplugged or plugged in, doesn't matter, when I try to watch a YouTube video, 10-30 seconds in my laptop freezes and makes a loud buzzing noise from either my headphones or speakers (depends on what I'm using). If I leave it in my room it can take up to 1 minute to recover, while if I grab it and walk out of my room, and go to the living room it recovers immediately. My bedroom is 11-12 meters away from the router (I'm 99% sure this is an internet issue), and I have 3-4 bars of internet connection when inside it.
We also have an old computer (like 2008 or something, but the specs are pretty bad) and when we used to have it inside my bedroom it would never crash (we use wireless internet with the desktop as well, with a usb wireless adapter). Both are running the same operating system (Windows 7)

This has been a problem since the first time I tried to take my laptop in my room. Due to this problem, I am forced to do everything on my living room aka no privacy. I'm begging for a solution.
I did not buy this laptop, it was a gift from someone from what I remember. It used to have a hard drive which broke (had this problem with the first harddrive), so we changed to another harddrive, then that broke as well and now i'm using a Kingston SSD, and the problem is still here. I know its not a harddrive issue, just stating that the problem still ... Read more

I believe that one of the fans is making a strange noise, but I can't really be sure which one. Whenever i go into a game full screen, the noise gets even louder. Even when I am in Windows, when I move the mouse around and click things the fan grinds more, but then grinds less. Anyone familiar with this? Any suggestions?

Disconnect any case fans. then you should be able to isolate wheter it is one of them. the CPU or the Video card fan.

Hi,
Recently a grinding noise can be heard when I turn on my PC, but not always. So far it has happened twice, the first time I looked inside my PC but found nothing, and the second time it stop after about 5 minutes once the computer had been turned on. I have literally no idea what it is as nothing is touch any of the fans and both HDD's in my build feel fine when I rest my hand on them.
I've made a video of the noise, for which the link is below. You may have to turn your volume up slightly to hear it, but it is much louder in reality.

Any help will be appreciated,

Answer:PC makes grinding noise when turning on

The CPU cooler is most likely loose because I've had a similar issue where when the CPU fan spins fast, it makes a similar noise.

I have a four year old HP Pavilion with windows XP. Three years ago, the CD drive needed to be replaced so we bought a used one for $10. It worked fine until today. I ejected the tray and it only came out halfway and made a grinding noise. I inserted and ejected it a couple more times and it did the same thing. Then, it finally wouldn't open at all. Now when I try to eject it, the light flashes and it makes the same grinding noise but it doesn't open.

I tried to eject it from My Computer and it did the same thing. I take classes on the computer and use CD's for class so I need my CD drive. Is there any way I can fix it? I'm a student on a small income and I don't know when I could afford another one. If there's something I could do to get it working again, that would be great. I'll try to answer all your questions.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, the fan in my T470s started making grinding noises when it starts spinning. There are no noise while spinning constantly or spinning down. I made a video, the noise starts between second one and two. Please excuse the static noise, they come from the mic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhBZWOzSBDw I am definitely calling the support hotline. I have a tech coming on wednesday anyway so I'm trying to fit this in the same appointment. I was just wondering if anyone has the same noise? My desktop has been making this odd grinding noise for the past 2 weeks. Not every day but sometimes every other day.

It only happens upon cold boot , or sometimes when restarting. I never hear the grinding noise while the computer is just on or doing other tasks.

I opened it up to see if anything was loose but it doesn't seem this is the case.

Since i don't have some sort of meter tester for my PSU, is there any other way to test it to see if its dieing?

I had this computer for 3 years now, and while i had generic stock PSU last me longer than this i wouldn't at all be surprised if it fails now.

If its not the PSU unit what else could it be? my hard drives test good, and besides i assumed when hard drives started dieing they mde clicking noises rather than grinding.

The Grinding noise sounds like a car is burning tire, except in this case it sounds like something is being scraped upon turning on my pc.

It could be a worn bushing in one of the fans causing the blades to scrape against the case until it's up to speed. try to clean your air vent by blowing it with compressed air, and see whether you dislodge any dusts, it is probably dirty now and needs to be cleaned........... also install HWmonitor (a free download off the net) and check your CPU temp....... if got warranty, let the Lenovo service people fix it up for you, if not then it is fairly easy DIY job.

Just from memory and hoping it might help someone---- An appalling noise when least expected. Out of the blue comes a br.a.a.a..a.ap like the thing was losing teeth from a cog somewhere.
About 15 years ago. This was first heard on a nearly new Epson inkjet. I phoned and an Epson man called, wiped the shiny rail (the track of the print head) and smeared a trace of thin oil on the same rail. Job done!
It seems that some go dry and the print head will not slide freely as it should. A stepper motor does its best but stalls and makes this horrifying noise.
Yesterday I wanted to scan a document with an Epson Perfection. The change from quiet order to absolute panic when the same destructive barp shook me rigid.
Fortunately I remembered long ago and the cause/cure were the same.
I used a narrow strip of cloth damped with a silicone/ptfe lubricant, everything is back to normal.
What made this different was that the rail is inside the scanner which had to be opened first. In short, remove two small self-tap screws at ends of the hinge on the base of the unit. This will allow thin screwdrivers to prize it open from this side until plastic lugs let go and the unit is open. None broke. It is a risk but with patience and no small bits to fall out, what have you to lose.

Answer:If your printer or scanner makes loud noise......

Have had that noise several times with the dot matrix printers we used to use for invoice printing. A quick wipe of the slider bar with solvent and then with the proverbial oily rag - job done for another few months.

Hi Uli

You cannot send only a notebook part to the Toshiba authorized service provider.
If you think something is wrong with the HDD then you have to contact the ASP in your country and the guys should be able to help you.

But note; if the HDD is loud then this doesn?t mean that there is a hardware malfunction.
My HDD clicks and makes some noises since 3 years but it runs well, without any troubles?

I have an older laptop that we use infrequently here in the office, and it's making a pretty loud grinding noise. I looked into this a bit on-line, and everyone seems to agree that this probably means the hard drive is going. I just want to confirm a few things with an expert before I proceed:

1) Is there anything I should try to get rid of the grinding noise before I just pack it in and trash this laptop?

2) Although the laptop is older, I really don't want to trash it. Does it make sense to buy a new hard drive?

3) If I do buy a new hard drive, is that the kind of thing that I can install myself, without too much experience? Can you guys help me through it?

4) Do you have any suggestions on where I should go for the drive and what I should get? (It's a Dell Notebook)

Any assistance is very much appreciated!

Answer:Grinding noise from laptop

Any assistance is very much appreciated!Click to expand...

Hi all,

My laptop fan is making some pretty weird noises and some of them sound pretty bad; when the laptop turns off the fan kind of clunkclunkclunks to a stop and I'm worried that the fan might not be spinning fast enough to cool the laptop. I've looked at how to replace the fan and it involves taking pretty much the entire laptop apart, is there anything else I could/should be looking at, trying to do, etc, before I go all in? The only thing I can think of would be to get a can of compressed air and try to give it a blast and maybe dislodge something; I just thought it would be worth asking before going through the trouble of taking the laptop apart plus the expense of buying a new fan. My laptop is an HP pavillion dv7.

Thanks a bunch for any help,
J

Answer:Laptop fan grinding noise?

It might be an idea to get a program such as Speccy (Google it) and check the temps on your CPU, if the CPU is too hot, i would see if you could get access to the fan, clean and clean it out with a can of compressed air (Or a vacuum but that may damage components, i wouldn't recommend it but i do it personally) and if that doesn't help take the fan off and use an alcohol wipe to clean off the grey compound on it and replace it with some fresh thermal compound (There are plenty of youtube videos on how to do this).

First post, hope I'm doing this right.Hi guys, about 3 weeks ago I purchased a Lenovo ideapad 110. It's a great laptop, however, about a couple weeks ago, the laptop started making a loud grinding/buzzing sound when playing audio. The sound only lasts for second, but it's quite jarring, to the point where I have to take out my earphones and take a break from what ever I was watching/listening to. It also happens without earphones, so those aren't the problem. YouTube is when it mainly occurs, however other sites with audio have it too. I've tried playing with the audio settings and updating the drivers, it worked for a few days, but the sound has returned. My previous laptop, a hp did this too, but never this frequently, so what exactly is this? I'm not very tech-savvy, so I have no idea. Here are the spec if it helps.15.6-inch (1366 x 768 pixels) TN displayIntel Pentium N3710 Processor (1.60GHz 1600MHz 2MB) with Intel HD Graphics4GB RAM (up to 8GB), 1TB HDDWindows 10 HomeBuilt-in DVD Recordable DriveStereo Speakers with Dolby Audio, 3.5 mm Combo Audio JackUSB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, RJ45 Ethernet and 4-in-1 Card Reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC)Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 acDimensions: 378 x 265 x 22.9; Weight: 2.2 kg24WH batteryThanks.

Hello
I just installed on windows 2000 on a Gateway Solo 9300 laptop
20GB HD
128 RAM

I deleted windows 98, reformatted, and installed Windows 2000 and Office 2000
I applied all the latest patches for IE, W2K, and Office
After testing here at my home I had no probs
Something happened from putting it in a laptop bag o delivering it to my friend

When she powers it up there is a grinding noise....I can hear it over the phone
and
I can also hear the harddrive seeking...clicking sound...which I never heard the whole time I had it
The sound comes from the side with the CDROM and FLoppy....It might be the floppy initializing on startup?????

Recently when holding the laptop in a certain way a grinding noise ensues from the device followed by a pulse like grinding. Hibernating the laptop and then reopening solves this until pressure is applied to an unspecified part of it after which the noise returns.

So recently my laptop seems to be making a low grinding noise, more like the old grinding noise computers use to make when they we loading back in the day, but the thing is it only happens when I scroll up or down on any program, be it chrome, word you name it. It isn't always consistent, sometimes it will be constant as I scroll, or only in short bursts and strange enough, for one instance I was over at ESPN and wasn't even moving the page, but there was a element that kept swiping from one article headline to another and my laptop with grind for the 1 second it took to slide headlines.

There hasn't been any performance issues or negative effects as far as I can tell, but I thought I'd ask around as see if it's perhaps a perquisite to an upcoming one. Anyone experience anything similar?

Answer:Laptop making low grinding noise while scrolling

Sounds like coil whine does it happen if you bring up nothing but a black screen on the browser and move your mouse around over it quickly? How old is the laptop?

EDIT: sorry if its grinding might be hard drive not power related at all. Though you have an SSD correct?

after a power problem, the laptops dvd drive and mains plug broke down, and a grinding sound could then always be heard from the system. after replacing the hard drive in a test, I can now safely say that its not a grinding hard drive at all. the harsh noise seems to be from the systems cpu fan. usually after a few mins of use the noise gets lower (almost disappears), as the temperature of the system increases. I have blown out all of the dust, but the noise remains. whats my other option? would a fan replacement or oiling really solve the issue? I dont have a small enough screwdriver here to remove the fan, and wouldnt be too sure on what to use if an 'oiling' was necessary-no doubt a replacement would be the best bet? surely its not the cpu itself creaking away-lol. thanks for any suggestions if possible. is a grinding/loud fan over a few yrs of use a common problem in laptops? this system is from 2007

Answer:grinding noise from laptop was not a hard drive!

Try taskmanager at start up and see what is using up the CPU.If nothing running system idle process should be showing about 96% that is normal.

I recently bought an HP Omen 2 months ago. For the last month it has made a glitchy noise that can also sound like grinding. It espicially happens when I watch videos of any kind, or if I am just on the web. Strangely, it stops making the noise when I play a video game such as overwatch. I know for a fact that it is a hardware problem as I have performed tests. It has something to do with the power or the fan. It changes loudness when i change the power settings. Is this Normal? I would appreciate if I got an answer ASAP. Thank you in advance!

I hope someone may be able to tell me how to fix the problem I'm having with my modem. My modem makes a loud humming static noise while dialing to get on the internet or to talk with someone and then disconnects and ends the call immediately after dialing. Sometimes there is no static noise while dialing and then the loud humming starts immediately after dialing and the telephone call terminates after about 30 seconds. On one call, I heard someone talking from the other end of the phone line but couldn't understand what they were saying because of the loud static.
I have an IBM Aptiva computer, with a windows95 operating system and an IBM Aptiva 28.8 mwave Data Fax modem which is located right on the mother board. I bought the computer new about 5 years ago.
I'm not too familiar with technical terminology, although I have looked in every part of my computer. I looked at a lot of things under system, modem, network neighborhood, program manager and communications, but everything looks normal. IBM notified me that they don't stock this modem any longer. I'm at a complete loss of any new ideas on how to fix this problem exept to try a new modem which I'm a little hesitant to buy until I'm sure the one I have is bad. Any help I can get woud be appreciated. Thank you.

i have an ibm laptop and during windows start up, it makes that "beep" like it just POSTed but louder and doesn't stop. i picked up the laptop while it was screaming to turn it off, and as i moved it, it changed pitch. this first happined when i was loading quake 2 on it, quake 2 had just finished loading and i was in the process of trying to play it. to get it to stop i just took out the battery. the sound sounded like it came out of the speakers, but changed when you push on a certin paRT of the laptop. how do i get to stop, is my laptop toast? i can get more info if u need it.

Answer:ibm laptop makes a very loud constant beep

What is the model and the model number called a type number on the bottom... the model will be something like 600X or T-23. But the type number will be a seven digit one like 2373-8SU.
The problem could be as simple as a stuck key, or as complex as a failed CPU Fan, failed memory, failed hard drive, or a motherboard gone bad.
If it is a repeated beep beep beep etc... with a pause then repeated beeps, count the beeps and tell us. That will usualy be a memory error or a cpu fan or a hard drive... depending on the model and the age.

I just got a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad 430 and whenever I insert a DVD into the DVD player and it starts playing, it makes a loud buzzing noise and the whole laptop starts to vibrate. It seems as if the DVD player is working really hard to get the disc going and I am definitely sure that while it may make some sound while playing the DVD, it is not supposed to buzz this loudly and make the whole laptop shake this much. Is it possible I can get this fixed? Or should I go get this replaced?

go into your BIOS menu, under config -> power -> Optical Drive Speed -> Choose normal or silent mode. Now retry.

I have a Packard Bell EasyNote TJ68 with 4.00GB memory. It's a fairly old computer but I've had this problem since I got the computer and I've finally snapped. When I plug my laptop in to charge, it makes a very loud noise unless I have the speakers on mute. This wouldn't be a problem but my laptop power cable is slightly loosened so if I'm sitting with it on my lap and I'm listening to music, it's always make a horrible noise every time the cable dis or re-connects when I move. I can't for the life of me figure out how to disable this noise. I've gone into sound and power options, and switched everything I saw to mute and still nothing. Please help!

Answer:Loud noise when I plug my laptop in

Probably a screaming capicator...MBoard replacement would be the only way out...unless you pay a shop to disassemble it and replace the bad cap which more than likely would be more than a new board.

I have a friend who has a laptop (inspiron 710m) that's been making some loud/weird/concerning noises. It's about 3 years old and has only started doing this within the past month or so. It sounds like it's coming from the fan area, and it sounds like sort of a vibrating noise, or sounds like something is rapidly hitting something else. My first thought was that it's the fan, either off-balance or dirty, but what do you guys think? She said it stops doing it if the laptop is at an angle, which kinda supports that theory.

If it was the fan, would blowing it out with compressed air solve it? She said it hasn't been cleaned ever, so I figure it couldn't hurt. Any ideas?

Answer:Laptop loud/strange noise =(

If the fan blades are hitting something solid, blowing it out with compressed air will likely not do anything. If the noise alters at different angles, it may be the fan's bearings going out. Often you can find replacement fans on eBay, or search online for make/model.

I have had my HP Pavilion m3-u001dx for about 3 months now, and there is a problem with it that has finally arisen to my attention. During basic use of the internet and even when the computer is not overheating, the fan is constantly working and creating a loud noise (it sounds very similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkCLubSukzI ). Only once or twice has it every operated silently, and usually the noise comes back after 10 minutes. Once the device even boots up the noise begins. The device is fully updated and relatively new, so I do not think it is dust cluttering the fan or the heat sink.  I use wireless internet, and there haven't been any software/driver changes, so I am unaware of what could be the problem.

Hi,I have had my HP laptop (the model is Notebook- 15-r237nl) for about a year and a half now. Usually, it was making a very strong buzzing noise in the beginning, when I was switching it on, which I found out is normal. Then, it started making softer buzzing noises; however, if I turned the laptop off and on again, they were going away. Now, it is a couple of days that it keeps buzzing quite loud, and it doesn't go away when I try to switch it off and on again. Can anybody help me? Also, it should be some kind of assurance or assistance included for the first two years, right? Thank you very much!!!

Answer:laptop makes static pop noise

Does the crackling sound like its an electrical crackling? If so try running without the power cable perhaps?
Perhaps something is stuck in the fan. You can try blowing out the dust with one of those compressed air cans? (carefully)
This is really difficult to answer as it could be anything. My guess is that something is loose and you should check it - OR the hard drive some how is damaged?
You will have to go and have it checked by a technician if you can't do it your self.

When this happens, the laptop then starts to struggle a bit, and sometimes freezes, sometimes leading to a crash.

is this a hard drive issue? what course of action may i need to take in order to correct this problem?

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the HP Pavilion x360 m3 Convertible 2 in 1 laptop online from Amazon September of last year. Everything was fine until around November where it was making this soft, but noticeable mechanical sound when I turned it on. I didn't pay much attention to it because it was not obnoxiously loud at the time, and I make sure that the fans are breathing and not collecting dust. However, now it appears that the fans are like jittering and making this whining noise when I'm on. I don't run a lot of programs at once on there nor do I leave it running for a long time. The noise is really bothering me because I can't even bring it to class with me because of how loud it sounds!  I tried everything, updating the BIOS, doing system checks and diagnosis through the HP support assistance, I always keep it clean and I use compressed gas to blow the dust that I could find in or around the laptop as thoroughly as possible. Still nothing. I have no clue what to do so I hope someone can help me, please. Thanks!

My laptop has recently started making the little beep noise that would occur when inserting a usb device etc. but i haven't inserted anything into the laptop at all?

I have checked various windows device programs but to no avail, there are no yellow triangles in the device manager, so i'm unsure as to what has caused this?

I have also system restored but it still proceeds to make the noise.

If anybody has any ideas on how to resolve this problem then i would really appreciate it!

Hello all, hope you all are well.

I am having an issue with a laptop of mine. Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop. The LCD outter cover looks a little cracked but not badly. The noise seems to be coming from the middle of the LCD towards the bottom. I took the laptop apart hoping it could have been a connector or a fan. I even took the RAM out and switched modules. The problem still persists to this moment.

I was hoping someone could give me good insight on what it could be?

I was thinking it may be the LCD monitor itself, but then I read online and some people say AC adapter or motherboard. Well the noise sounds like it's coming from the monitor only, so I don't really know.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Synt4x

Hi guys,

Here is the rundown of my problem. I have a sony laptop VGN-FW560F (windows 7). I have had it since December 2009. Everything on the computer worked great until November of last year. While on an airplane going home, and while it was sitting on my lap (not the tray), it froze up while running Lightroom, Photoshop cs5, and Photomatix. I originally thought that system got hot, but I am not entirely sure... the airplane was frigid that day, and I had only been using it for about 30 minutes. It froze up, and it took FOREVER to shut down. All the programs were lagging while trying to close them. It finally shut down, we landed, I went home. When it came time to turn on the computer, it would boot up, but the second it got to the Welcome screen, it would freeze. The computer would pause for about 5 seconds, then do a rapid clicking noise (very quite (you have to be in a silent room to hear it)) for about 1 second, then freeze again. The clicking noise appears to be coming from under the "H" key, which appears (?) to not be close to the harddrive. The computer would not be able to be turned off because it seemed to go in an infinite loop of the clicking / freezing. I could boot up on safe mode, and it would finish booting and everything, but after about 20 seconds of being in windows, it would click and freeze again. It would allow me to do some stuff, but every 20 seconds or so it would freeze, click, freeze, click, freeze, click... 20 seconds of able to do som... Read more

Answer:Sony Laptop Makes Clicking Noise :(

first things first, get all the data that you want to keep off of that hard drive. You can purchase external USB drives very cheap these days, and it sounds as if the hard drive is going south. After that, hit the HD's mfg site and run some tests on it to see if the HD is indeed failing.

But by all accounts it sounds like the click of death; I'd get that data off (at least what you want to keep) asap.

Oh man, twice now, after about 10 minutes of running, my laptop, makes this crackling noise, like click click click then small curls of smoke start comming out of it. I quickly turn it off and it happens again when i turn it on.

The noise and smoke is on the left hand side. It's a Gateway laptop that i've had for ~3 years. I've never had problems with it. Ever. No viruses no nothing. This came out of nowhere.

Please dont tell me it's garbage now. What do I do. I'm afraid to leave it alone while its running cause I dont want to burn the house down but I hope this is somehow fixable.

Answer:Laptop makes clicking noise and has smoke

I wouldn't use it anymore and take it to a PC repair shop......running it will only damage it more maybe fatally!

Left hand side could be where the Heat-sink and fan are...not sure on that model

I have a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
When I put a CD in the drive, it makes a loud noise and the laptop vibrates. However, this only happens when I put a CD-RW disc in the drive. When I put another CD in, such as an audio CD, it doesn't make this noise.
Does this suggest the CD/DVD drive needs replacing?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop - CD/DVD Drive loud noise

Steveu9,
You can try other types of media in the drive to see if the noise remains. At the link below is an option to run the diagnostics on the drive to see if it is faulty. You must have a disk in the drive to perform the diagnostics.  Also, at the the link below under the drivers section are  cd/dvd firmware downloads. To determine which drive you have in the computer you can click on the configuration tab on the site or input your system service tag. This will show you the hardware information for your computer. You can then choose to download and install the firmware. I cannot verify that updating the firmware will resolve the noise issue.  If you determine that the drive is faulty and you want to replace it. You can call the the dell spare parts dept. The number to call is 1-877-717-3355

I found the sound it is doing on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RayMBLFYRtQ#t=16

I thought it could be a battery/heating issue so I bought two of those fans (http://i.imgur.com/OEvrExd.jpg)
Nothing helped, I could be watching a movie or simply browsing the internet using Google Chrome and it would crash randomly. I tried removing the battery and using the charger only and I got the same result!

Any help on what could be the cause of this?

Hey guys, well I've been having an annoying problem with my laptop fan. It produces a high pitched noise that is just loud enough to annoy me :/ My room is quiet, so you can very easily hear it. I'm not sure how long it's been going on for, but I've noticed it the last few months. To me it sounds like the fan is starting to wear out, from a fan bearing maybe. I've tried cleaning it by disassembling the laptop, but the noise hasn't changed. Do I need to replace the fan?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Laptop fan makes high pitch noise, fan wearing out?

Hmm gin mate what are the temps doing?? sounds like the thing is working overtime to me.

Try this and post back Speccy - Download < download from piriform.

One thing you can try if the temps are up is to shine a very bright light into the fan aperture and then look into the outlet vent if you cannot see much light then the cooling rad is blocked.
The pic is of a Toshiba but the principle is the same.

Hi All Need your help for the following problem associated with the cooling fan of my notebook that I am experiencing for the last few days. The notebook I am using is almost 5 yrs old now. It is HP DV6 6154tx.The problem is that whenever I switch on my notebook, I hear a noise coming out from the vents of cooling fan. It sounds as if a small mixer grinder is powered on. The intensity of noise ranges from weak to sufficiently moderate level for the entire period of notebook functioning. This noise makes the notebook to heat up around the area of cooling fan from outside after just 5 minutes of working on it and the heat along with noise continues until I switch off the notebook. The system does not stop functioning nor does it blink during the noise, heat period. But I feel that all this has perhaps caused the notebook to slow down a bit. I generally use the system for internet surfing and my official works apart from watching movies sometimes. On average, it amounts to approx 3 -4 hrs of daily usage. I don't play games on the notebook. After experiencing the noise and heat, I did initial first aid of the notebook to remove the noise and heat. I cleaned the entire system from inside and outside including the fan and other components. Separated the fan from sink, took it out and switched on the notebook. The noise was actually and still coming out from the fan itself. I could see and hear it right in front of my eyes. The fan was making noise whie it continued to spin... Read more

problems with my laptop: when i turn it on it makes a banging noise like church bell for like 35secs and later stopped to continue POST again when want to boot windows (Vista) it shut itself down. it only boot in safe mode without shuting down. pls help me

Answer:my Sony laptop makes noise and shut down when booting OS

Your Hard Drive is the likely cause of the Gong ( church bell ) sound. I heard drives before make a sound like that, just not as loud as a church bell gong and it was the arm in the drive slamming and the platters in the drive resonating the sound to make a bell like sound. Do you have the media to install clean or repair installation for this computer?Do you happen to have a spare hard drive available to swap out the drive, and install clean to a different hard drive?

I thought that the issue may be that I had outdated drivers. When I got genuine Windows 7, I performed all the system updates but I am still having issues. In what is probably a strongly related issue, my laptop lid is a bit loose and constantly makes the USB connect/disconnect noise when it moves even slightly. Actually, when opening the lid it makes no noise. But once I push it away from me past a certain point (even very slightly), it makes that USB noise, with no exceptions.

My comp is making a really loud fan spinning grinding noise. I used speedfan program to try to lower the fan speed, I notice the fan slowing down because the fan sound is changing. Except the lond grinding noise is still present, SO IT MAY NOT BE THE FAN but what else can cause a loud grinding noise? Is it the fan or something else? BTW I cant really tell where the sound is coming from, specifically.

Answer:Loud grinding/fan sound, not sure whats causing it

Hi, 2 months ago i bought a Yoga 3 Pro  i7 laptop and in the last 2 weeks it started making an unbearable constant noise which sounds like a chip fryer. it is clearly coming from the fan located on the upper right hand side of the unit. it simply does not stop running and its unbearable. given what i paid for this machine i am on the point of returning it.Can someone help with a fix for this issue? Lenovo i called tech support and no resolution was made thus far.

Answer:Extremely loud Fan noise on brand new Yoga 3 Pro Laptop - Please Resolve ASAP

Hello Pierre, welcome to the forums.

It does sound like a possible mechanical problem. If you bought the Yoga 3 Pro 2 months ago, then it should still be under warranty, so your best course of action would probably be to send it to a Lenovo Service Center and get it checked out under the warranty.

This just started happening yesterday and it's aggravating as all hell. Randomly, my laptop starts making a high pitched noise. I first thought it was the external speakers but finally figured out that it has to do with the ethernet cable being plugged in

I know that's the cause because when I check the back of the laptop, the high pitched noise is perfectly synched with the activity light

Has anyone heard of this happening? This has got to be the most aggravating computer problem I've ever run into.

Hello I just joined this forum in desperate need of help, been searching the net for days without any help :/

So the problem is my friend brought me her laptop ( used to be my old one ) an MSI GT780DX that I installed windows 8.1 on I been trying to fix it for weeks now, It randomly hangs while making a static noise from the speakers, sometimes it does it before I log in other times it happens after days of gaming, I tried formatting the computer and reinstalling windows 8.1, I tried switching out the ram, I also tried switching the hard disk, but nothing seems to help, I'm not that tech savvy, but I know how to get information and use it, currently studying IT Support, but this computer keeps failing on me, I think it might be worth mentioning that this computer has been split 3-4 times with everything disconeccted and reconeccted, please help me getting desperate :/

If you hear a lot of noise it means the fan is working, but is the heatsink clogged with dust? If the fan outlet is blocked with dust and cant move the heat out of the case your laptop will be overheating. Have you tried cleaning the fan outlet with some compressed air (duster) while the laptop is not running? If the fan isnt blocked and no heat is coming out the heatsink/heatpipe might not be working properly. it's not common but it can happen...

MY mother has a Dell Laptop with Windows Vista. After the computer being on a bit the fan starts making this horrible sound and sometimes the she gets the blue screen and causes the computer to restart. Anyone ever seen or heard of this?

Answer:Dell laptop makes horrible noise then blue screens

Hmm, interesting.

Does the laptop appear to be getting hotter and hotter as you use it? Are you sure that the fan is actually spinning/the cause of the sound.

Sounds to me like the fan could be faulty. I've also had large clumps of dust (Large enough to stop the fan spinning) caught in the fanblades, meaning I had to disassemble the laptop to resolve the issue.

You could try giving the fan/air filter a blow out with compressed air and see what happens/if it improves. Also make sure that the fan is actually spinning to start with.

What does the noise sound like also?

I must mute my laptop's audio due to an awful noise that sounds like a fan blade hitting something how can I fix this?

Answer:Laptop sound doesn't work properly makes a fan noise

Assuming the laptop is not brand new, you probably have a build up of dust in your laptop's cooling paths and heat sink(s). You can confirm this by installing HWMonitor and confirming the system's temperatures at idle and during use. You need to blow out the dust with a can of compressed air that you can purchase at a computer store or office supply store. Just blow the air into all of the vents and carefully into the easier opening access panels they supply. If this does not help, you MAY have either too much dust build up and may have to open the system or have it cleaned out professionally, or (less likely), another obstruction hitting the fan's blades.Post back results for more advice. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

So, after a couple of days of using my brand-new acer aspire e15 (nvidia 840m, intel i3) I started noticing a little "rumble" sound every once a while, a little click that can be heard approximately once every two minutes or sometimes even more often (expecially when putting more acrtion into CPU). No luck getting any help online, it doesn't seem to be a hard-drive failure sound or anything that serious, sound more like the fan hits something while starting up, at least from what I could gather without opening it up. Should I just contact the warranty service right a way or maybe it's supposed to be like this? Any help appreciated.

Answer:Brand new AspireE15 makes a little grinding sound ...

There is no moving parts in the lower left corner. This is a hard one to diagnose without actually having it in your hands.Did you check if you left a CD in the drive? If I heard a rumble and clicking in mine, I would think HDD.I know a few days use isn't enough to get a lot of dust in it, but maybe something got into the cooling in packing, etc. Try blowing out the intake and exaust ports all the way through and see if anything comes out.

Even when it is just sitting there doing nothing. If I open a new window, racing noises, like the fan gearing up and down loudly. When opening programs grinding noises. I am not sure what to do about this, is it something simple?

Answer:Computer makes racing and grinding noises

Hi-

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

What is the make and model of the system?

How old is the system?

How long has the problem existed?

Also, grinding noises are usually just old worn fans, which is it is a desktop, can easily be replaced. What has me wondering is why it goes to full fan speed everytime you do something.

Regards,

Mark

I have a HP 850-065se with an i7-5820K CPU with an unknown sized radiator and HP closed loop water cooler.  The water pump creaks, grinds and is excessive loud, and is so bad that I am thinking I need an after market cooler though I just bought this computer.  Its insane, but makes the computer very uncomforable to use.  Its plastic housing will make it almost impossible to purchase an aftermarket water cooler, and dont feel I should have to since the computer is brand new.  How can I get HP to resolve this issue or fix the obviously unreasonable loud noise made by the cooler?

Question: Grinding noise?

can someone please help me?
just a few minutes ago i was simply browsing and heard a loud grinding noise from my pc, i checked all the fans and it seems to be from the gpu, i restarted pc and still goes on. i left it off for now but i cant seem to find the cause, nothing is hitting anything
help?
thnx

Answer:Grinding noise?

You wouldn't be able to see anything. The grinding noise occurs when the ball bearings go ( at one point the balls start showing wear and don't run "round" anymore, causing the fanblades to tumble.)
Simple solution: you need a new fan. In cases of emergency (like you can't get your hands on a new fan anytime soon) there is a way to prolong the life of the fan a little bit. You get some graphite powder from your automotive supplier, peel back the fan label and carefully put a little bit onto the center of the fan.
I really mean CAREFUL the stuff is worse on cloth than laser toner
Make sure to put the label back on and don't use any form of oil..it will only cause a mess.

Question: Grinding Noise

I have an Everex Explora, AMD Athlon computer and at the start up and when I am searching for info it makes a grinding noise while it is loading the information. Also twice last week after typing and searching for what I wanted I heard a loud grinding noise. Not knowing anything about computers I have no idea what is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Grinding Noise

Hi lag
Grinding noises aren't good. It sounds like you hard drive is going. I would back up your important data NOW. You can run a scandisk (surface scan) and defrag to help test out the hard drive. Many manufacturers of hard drive also have utilities on their web sites you can run to test out the drive. Is your system under warranty? Many hard drives come with a three year warranty.
