Server Hardware solution

Question: Server Hardware solution

Hi i want to make a server the min requirements is SQL server Standard or Enterprise

RAM 1GB - 2GB, But in most cases 4GB + 30MB for Reporting Services + Analysis Services, 50-60MB for SQL Management Studio & its recommended each user connection takes 24KB

CPU 64Bit Proc Intel Xeon 3.4GHz

HDD Internal for the Min of 500GB

We will need Fibre connection to external storage array, Fibre cards in servers for connection to storage array, UPS & a Rack & the server should be cheap & upgradeable in future.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have started searching around for the correct docs on how to do this but haven't had much luck finding one that addresses what I'm trying to do.

I have an existing Windows 2000 server and am going to replace it with a server running Windows 2003 Server R2.

I would like to know the best way of doing that. Most of the docs I have seem talk about it as though you're keeping the same server hardware in place. That's not what I'm trying to do.

So, you don't have to go through all the steps I need to do. If you could just point me to the correct doc and give some helpful hints I would appreciate it.

Having recently purchased a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate X64 and having this error at first drove me bankers. But the stepping back I thought about it some more and I just tried a solution that worked! I went into the BIOS and changed the memory timing from 166 MHz for DDR 333 memory, to 133 MHz. I then saved this change in the BIOS and proceeded to to boot-up form Windiows Vista Ultimate X64 without any more errors!

I have a client with a web server running Windows 2000 Professional. They also have a server on the network running NT 4. They have been told that there is a device that will route requests to the NT server if the 2000 server is down that costs about $100. I have not heard of such an animal, and if anybody can shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it. The device should somehow, I suppose, automatically detect that the machine at IP address A is not responding, and route the web request to IP address B. Anybody?

I have an X230, running Windows 10 Professional (x64) Version 1607 (build 14393.576).  My version of the Lenovo Solution Center is 3.4.002. When I try to run a hardware scan, I get a throbber ("Loading"), but the scan never loads.  It doesn't matter whether I select "Run Quick Tests" or "Select Tests"; same result. I successfully ran a scan a month ago, using an earlier version of Solution Center (3.3.003), but that version won't work now, either (same result, perpetual throbber). Solutions?

My computer has 3 monitors in NVIDIA surround configuration. I also have very special sound settings with my creative X-FI card that I want to use when gaming.

Long story short, I also have my television pluged in my system (pluged with HDMI and has to be disabled for NVIDIA Surround to work). And when I want to switch from desktop/gaming to television mode, I have to disable my NVIDIA Surround, and make a duplicate of my central monitor to my television. It sounds simple, but really each time it requires a few minutes of messing around because I don't get the good duplicate or what not. Also I need to re-configure my sound system from a headphone+buttkicker system. And then adjust my creative setting to go into my 5.1 system, with 3D surround, dolby etc..

Basically, each time I switch from my computer to the television, I need like 5minutes of configuration. Also changing all of these settings is way to complicated when I'm not home for my girlfriend to do that.

Yesterday I thought I had the brightess idea. I thought I could just create a new Windows user with different monitor configurations and different sound configuration. So when I'd be on desktop/gamming and wanted to go on the TV, I would just "Switch user"!

Thing is, those kind of hardware settings carry over different windows session... .

This is kinda annoying, I was wondering if perhaps you guys had any idea what I could do?

The only thing I can think of right now is having a dualbo... Read more

Here's the deal, the cable company cut us off last night because my roommate has been downloading files from bittorrent, limewire, and all of the likes. I have explained to him in the past, DO NOT DO THIS, IT IS ILLEGAL! He failed to listen to me, and now our internet connection has been cut off from our ISP. I have tried to block his bittorrent ports in the past on my router (Dlink DIR-655) with no luck. I have googled the ports for Bittorrent and Limewire and have been unable to block those ports. I have tried blocking those ports according to his MAC address (seeing as he change's his IP and computer name often). Here's what I'm looking for. I need a software/hardware solution that will block all ports except for the ones I tell it to leave open. This way when bittorrent does it's scan for open ports (I believe this is called channeling) it will not find any. I need something that will work in a residential environment, and something that I can set without their knowledge. As far as they would be concerned the only thing they could physically do would be to surf the web. If I had my way with them I would only allow port 8080 for them. Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Mod's I hope this is in compliance with this rule (18) You will not discuss, suggest, engage, or encourage any ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES. Links provided to locations that deal with any such activity are also expressly forbidden.

Answer:Need hardware/software solution for Port Blocking

There's nothing wrong with your post, you are trying to PREVENT illegal activity, so that is not a problem.

What you need to do is configure a default block rule for all outbound traffic, then only open/pass traffic on the ports you really need.

Here's a good starting point on the outbound ports to pass:

UDP * * * 53 (DNS) dns
TCP * * * 80 (HTTP) http
TCP * * * 443 (HTTPS) https
UDP * * * 123 ntp
TCP/UDP * * * 1755 media player
TCP * * * 5190 aim
TCP * * * 25 (SMTP) smtp
TCP * * * 110 (POP3) pop3
TCP * * * 3389 rdp
GRE * * * * pptp

UDP * * * 500 ike

I'm about to go looking around NewEgg and Amazon. What I want is simple to describe. I want to hide my IP and my internet activities from my ISP. Why? None of your business, same as it's none of their business what I'm doing. So no need for arguments here. If you just want to argue go elsewhere, if you want to help please post.

I did a little searching earlier and it looks as if some routers have a VPN built in. My current router is a Linksys WRT160Nv3 Wireless N router hooked to a standard Comcast cable modem box. I have looked through its options and nothing sticks out to me as a VPN setup area. I have static IPs for two laptops hooked to our wireless network, one laptop is Windows Vista the other is Windows XP.

I am not stuck on VPN. ANY hardware solution, with exceptionally easy to understand instructions or just as easy to understand setup options in its interface will work. So a hardware proxy, VPN, or just some sort of encryption. I don't care. I just want something, hardware, not software - I REPEAT, NO SOFTWARE, NO WEB SERVICES I HAVE TO PAY FOR,, that will make mt internet activities completely anonymous, unable to be throttled, unable to be detected, beyond of course usage of the internet in general. In other words they can see that I'm doing something, but can get no details. I hope I have made that clear enough.

What I use has to be compatible with Comcast obviously, as they are my ISP and I have no other I can use in this area. ... Read more

Answer:Hardware Solution for Hiding My IP - In Plain English Please!

So I don't think you really understand what a VPN is, or I'm not really understanding what you want.

A VPN is an encrypted tunnel between two endpoints. You buy one of those devices and connect to another device somewhere else. Any traffic transiting those two devices "can't" be inspected but you still need somewhere to connect to. This is usually another device for a corporate network, but otherwise an internet based VPN (Ipredator / vyprvpn) etc that are almost always at a cost.

If I'm mistaken and you want to say, use your laptop out in the real world but connect back to your home network, and the traffic not be inspected then a VPN device and a VPN software client on the laptop would be the way to go. I don't think this is what you want though.

Your other option is something like Tor, but is software based and in my previous experience with it, VERY slow (maybe it's better now?)

I recently did a factory restore on my Lenovo G780 laptop. Ever since, the LSC has been giving me errors. Sometimes, when I open the LSC, the application layout appears, but there is no text; however, I can use my task manager to close it out. Now, when it does work, if I try to run a hardware scan, it will complete the Memory portion of the scan; however, during the Targeted Read Test it will go to either 66% or 72% specifically, and then completely stop. The loading square still moves; however, after leaving it there for a couple hours, it does not move. If I try closing the LSC, my computer freezes to the point I cannot open the task manager or use Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I have tried re-installing the LSC twice, and have even tried using the standalone Hardware diagnostic to run the check up; however, both have the same issue. Anyone have any advice?

Hey guys,
My 3yr old Lenovo g580 (Windows 8.1, core i5) has been have a bunch of issues for awhile. It sometimes will not completely shut down or hibernate (monitor off but fan, power light still on). I would have to manually shut down using the power button or removing the battery. Then it will not turn on properly, would just stay on the Lenovo screen. Even if it does turn on it will take about 5-10 mins to get to the login screening. This is been happening more and more frequently. Once I got it on, it would work fine. But over the last couple weeks, I've noticed it would freeze (mostly firefox or media files). Then about 2 days ago I got the "Boot configuration data file is missing" error when trying to turn on. I figured it was the end but luckly, after multiple google searches, I was able to fix the error using a recovery USB. I ran the hardware scan to see what the issue may have been and the storage device failed in:
Target Read test
SMART Short Self test
SMART Drive Self test
Result code: WHD01V01I-HL9W9L
It passed in everything else.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Are all the symptoms related? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good day and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having difficulty.
It sounds like your HDD is dying. I would recommend that you back up all of your personal files, bookmarks, etc. first thing. Once done, you could run additional diagnostics on the drive to see if you can get more info. Personally, I'd just replace the drive and reinstall/restore your system.

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum. First let me give some background. I am a police officer in the New Orleans area. I am in charge of my departments, laptops, desktops, and server network. I have no formal computer training. I am one of those people who likes to know how things work and over the years I have taught myself how to work on and fix computers. I am the "IT" guy at my department even though I have no formal training (google is a big part of what I do). Whenever I have an actual computer guru working on something for me I pay attention and take notes. I have some knowledge now of basic networking things.

I currently have 4 servers. All Windows based (Server 2003 and 2008). On two of my servers I have external drives for storage of video files. I currently have 2 Lacie 6TB drives set to RAID 1 and a 4TB drive also RAID 1. These two servers run and save video and audio from our in car dash cameras and IP crime camera network. One server is my domain controller and DHCP. This server also contains all of the departments network shares as well as all crash reports. Each officer has a folder to store their documents such as warants, trip sheets, and whatever they need or want to store. The administration stores their statistics in a shared folder including stats for the FBI and other state nad federal agencies we are required to report crime stats to. The last server stores all criminal reports, including the report, statements, evidence forms... Read more

At home I have a Dlink DPR-1260 and that supports up to 4 printers, but they have to be on the list of supported printers.

At work I just use real printers.

My T410's performance has been degrading, so I ran a full hardware test several times using Lenovo Solution Center.  It failed only the memory test.  It repeatedly (but not always) found this problem:  The machine is long out of warranty, so the "result code" and the link to open a ticket at Lenvovo are apparently useless.  So I'm looking for advice on what to do, given this particular failure. ~ Thanks in advance~ Ken

Hi, I just updated the Lenovo Solution Center installed on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.I then performed a hardware scan and got the following result :no issue (green light and the following message : WMB008000-DK7X5L ) and at the same time a PCI / PCI-e Test showed as invalid (white cross on a red background). So what do I have to do ? It looks like the software tells me "no problem" and at the same time highlights an issue at the level of the PCI. Thanks in advance for your help Kind regards Philippe

I have two raspberry pi 2's one connected to the tv in the living room downstairs and one upstairs these run kodi which I use to stream videos

Before my son was born in February I spent weeks ripping my DVDs so I could keep them in storage to clear lots of room for when he was born. I've filled a 5tb external and a 2tb internal and still have more DVDs to rip. I rip the whole ISO as I enjoy extras and commentaries so I want a full back up of each dvd.

A few days ago my windows hdd (luckily the one without the dvd rips) reported issues and suggested I back it up.

i never use my PC anymore it's just on so I can access the files for either pi. What would be the best solution for me to continue being able to stream these DVDs around my home?

I've looked at nas but I can't really find one which doesn't have a set file size. I currently have 7tb which isn't backed up so I would want 14tb But because I have more to rip and want to future proof it for a while I'm really looking for at least 20tb.

Can anybody suggest what would be my best solution a nas? A server? I don't want to spent thousands of pounds I just want something that I can hopefully add or replace with bigger hdds over the years and as enough space to have a backup hdd for each one I add.

Just in case anyone doesn't beleive I have 7tb of Isos backed up I have a lot of tv series they are usually 6 DVDs and dual layed so that's around 48gb ... Read more

I have a home server running Windows 2003, I would like to do the following, is there a free solution to achieve this?

1. Put a modem in the server
2. Have it be able to send and receive faxes
3. When an email is received convert it to a PDF and email to me instead of printing
4. Have the ability to send PDF, DOC, TXT files through the fax software

Any help would be appreciated. I know this can be done with software like GFI but that isn't close to being free.

Answer:Windows 2003 fax server solution?

GFI does offer a freeware version, but you'll need to give up a bit of information to get a freeware keycode.

First off, whilst I am fairly computer literate I know nothing about sevrers and very little about networking.
I have an old PC sat in my room and I am wondering whether I could use this as a server to store files that I currently have on an external 3TB drive. Ideally, I would want to be able to access these files from my iMac (which is sat next to the computer) and perhaps also my iPhone and iPad (although this isnt essential, would be a nice bonus though).
However, I have no idea how to go about doing this, I am not sure what options are available to me. I have seen talk of using Linux on the old PC to utilise it as a server but I'm not sure whether this would be the best solution.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.

I will need to be able to access XP home PC (in fact the whole LAN) from my laptop, when I'm in London.

Internet connection available at both ends.
broadband shared to LAN pc's via Netgear router (Belfast)
dialup access to laptop (London) - NB may upgrade to broadband if need to..

Any ideas for a cheap, easy to use VPN solution anyone ?

The issue: converting a desktop computer to use as a web-server (for low-intensity use, less than 2000 hits a month).

All options are on the table (e.g. operating system, server software, etc.).

I want to hear your favorite / preferred solutions.

Answer:Using Desktop as a Web Server -- Let's hear your solution

I run my Windows Home Server which acts as my File Server and Web Server for my home on an old AMD Athlon 1.4 with 512mb of ram. Works great.

If you think you want to try Linux give any of those distributions a try. Otherwise just stick with Windows as the OS. If you do, you have the option of running Apache or IIS as your web server.

I have three computers on my home network, 2 with Windows 7 RC and one XP computer that I use as for file storage, all behind a Linksys Router, then connected to the internet via cable modem. I have been pulling my hair out with slow web browsing, and intermittent "Server Not Found". Firefox takes forever with "looking up" websites or "connecting to" websites, often resulting in "Server Not Found," and also hit or miss if I can "Try again" and have the website load correctly. This happened with all internet browsers that I tried. It has been so frustrating simply due to the inconsistency.

I have tried many different changes to both my computers and router, with no success. It seems that resetting the network adapter(which was included in most "remedies" on forums) would provide only temporary relief. I've also heard that Homegroup was causing problems, so I disabled those services as well, with no permanent fix. Connecting a computer directly to the cable modem alleviated these problems, which led me to believe it was a Windows 7 networking problem.

But the simple solution that worked for me was to simply change my "Home Network" to a "Work Network" for all Windows 7 computers. AMAZING! Internet is faster than ever with no lag in DNS lookup and no "Server Not Found" errors. I can still share files between computers on my network and things are as they should be!

Alright, I've been tearing my hair out over this for long enough and trying to get things to work but it's not going well. Our router's print server function has pretty much given up, so I need something new. The printer I am trying to share is a Brother HL-5040 B&W laser printer. What I want is a small hardware print server that will accept either USB or old style printer connectors. I would prefer if it had the old style but that's not that important.

What I really want is to be able to just install the printer software on all the local network PCs for the specific printer and then just go through the Windows XP printer wizard and say what IP address it is at. I do not want to make a print server using a Linux or Windows machine. Any advice people have would be very much appreciated.

What you need is a device known as a print server. Many companies make them: Dlink, Netgear, Linksys, etc.

Hello all, I noticed that after performing a clean uninstall/reinstall of the NVIDIA SUITE that doing a hardware scan in the Lenovo Solution Center, (just clicking on either Run Quick Tests, or Select Tests) it will cause a blue screen within a minute. I had this problem before so I am diagnosing it now. I first tested the hardware scan after doing a clean refresh of my laptop. I created a restore point before updating the Intel driver, and tested the hardware scan after it. It worked properly then I installed Steam, and CCleaner. I tested the hardware scan after that and it still worked correctly but forgot to create a recovery point. I now did the installation of NVIDIA Suite (Driver, Geoforce, PhysicsX). And I remembered that I should do a hardware scan to make sure everything was ookie-dookie. But thats where it became bluescreen. SO I'm sure that the graphics card is a problem now again.

Hello All...

Great forum here and it appears there are a lot of helpful folks... As I am just entering into this arena, I am certainly grateful for that!!

I have recently partnered with a hotel/condo management company who presently has its business software residing on a shared server with limited accessability by the company. What they (we) want to do is establish complete ownership of the system both in terms of hardware and software, and that is where my limited experience will quickly become a hindrance to the solution!

So I guess my question is this. How do we effectively and efficiently place into operation a dedicated server, with the appropriate hardware and software, to run a relatively small business operation that includes two resort hotel/condos with about 80 rooms between the two? Each hotel has a front desk and each runs its operation on a Windows-based Hotel Management System (HMS) although I'm not yet aware of the brand.

It is entirely possible that I'm not even asking this question in the right manner and if that's the case , I'd certainly be open to and appreciate any advice, direction, or guidance that you might like to offer.

I believe the bottom line is this. The company wants to own the entire process including hardware, software, UPS, networking capability, email, web hosting, and wireless internet to its guests - all under one roof. Of course, the more user-friendly the better as they are also not interested in outsourcing and... Read more

online backup - sungard has 7u shelfs available for cheap. you need to purchase the server and maintain it.

perform an inital copy in house. then relocate the server in the shelf. setup replication between the local server and remote server. Double take, ca xosoft, linux rsync are replication software

disk to disk - buy a big honk-a-donk removable drive. copy data to it. take offsite every night.

Our print server is a Windows 2003 Server machine and we would like to be able to add a PDF printer as one of the printers and share it on the network so that users could use it to print PDF documents instead of us installing Adobe Acrobate / CutePDF on each individual workstation.

Does anybody have any experience with setting up a similar situation? I've tried installing CutePDF on the print server and I am able to share it, but when I try to print from a workstation on the network it just causes an error and doesn't ask where to save the PDF file.

If anyone knows of a free or possible cheap solution for this, would be much appreciated!

Answer:free PDF solution for a print server running Win2003?

we did this at my last job. However, I was not a part of it, but will give what I do know.

We used PDFCreator
It ran as a service, and may have had another file run at all times. Not by service, but just running the app.
Some kind of configuration
We also had it automatically save to the users home folder on the server.

that is all I know
good luck.. I do know it can be done though

i'm curious if there's a good way to be able to vpn on a port other than the default one

i set up a vpn on my server (2003 box). it's a multihomed box, with one nic connected to my isp and one connected to my internal network. this server is my everything server - dns,wins,rras,dhcp.... basically, the works. i'd like to be able to set up remote access to use port 443, since it's available from pretty much any place that i might be. i'd just use port 80 as that's even more available, except my isp doesn't let me setup a server on 80. is there a good way to change the default vpn port (i think it's 1723), or ports if there are multiple that remote access uses? i'm using 2003's built in firewall, which automatically adds entries for the services you set up. when i added the vpn service, it put in a new entry for ipsec and 2 vpn gateway entries. unfortunatly, the ports (incoming and outgoing) are hardcoded and you can't delete the firewall entry. the reason for incoming and outgoing (for those who aren't familiar with win2k3's firewall, is because it's a combination port forwarder and firewall entry. i'm just using since vpn is happening on the local machine. was hoping that maybe i could do port translation using 443 external/1723 internal, but since the ports are hardcoded, that won't work (2003, you fail it!)

any advice?

Answer:changing the vpn port for 2003 server (or other solution to my problem)

You do realize that ports for PPTP are well defined, right?

Changing that port number is like changing the RPC initiation port away from 135. Your clients couldn't connect any longer...

You would have to have a custom coded PPTP client to connect over any other port...

Hello Lenovo Forum To upgrade my Lenovo G500s (model 20245) I bought a new RAM kit from Amazon and installed it.It's this one: know it says it's DDR3 RAM, but the voltage is 1.35V, like it is needed by the Laptop. The Laptop booted without problems and the RAM is detected in BIOS, windows general information and CPUz (Dual Channel, 1.35V all fine). By running the Hardware Scan of the Lenovo Solution Center (version 2.8.007) for a quick check of my new RAM unfortunately the "Quick random pattern test" failed, producing the following result code: WME800800-HL9Y7D Googling this code didn't help at all.Can you give me a hint what this code means? Does the memory is damaged? Until now I didn't test any applications (benchmark / games), will try some tomorrow.  Information about the Laptop: (mainly taken from CPUz)Lenovo G500sChipset: Intel Ivy Bridge Rev. 09Southbridge: Intel HM76 Rev. 04 BIOS: 7BCN36WW (V 2.02)--> btw. I tried installing the 2.03 one ( the installer said it is not for my mainboard!  Thank you in advance!

Answer:Lenovo G500s, after RAM upgrade error code in solution center hardware scan WME800800-HL9Y7D

If the BIOS is properly recognizing the memory, Windows is also recognizing the memory and the computer is running fine then I wouldn't worry.  The error in the Lenovo Solution Center maybe a false error due to the difference in the latency of the new modules.  The new memory is CL=9 where as the typical memory for your model would be CL=11.
If you are still concerned about the new memory then I would run MemTest on them.  That utility would give you a better indication of how the new memory is working in your system.  Here is a link to the freeware version....

Hi all,

This is my first post

Right I'll get straight to it. I've been looking for something to fulfil my requirements but I haven't found anything, and now I'm thinking it doesn't actually exist! So my question is is there a piece of hardware out there that matches my requirements as close as possible?

1) I'm looking for NAS device...
2) ...that is also DLNA certified - something that is compatible with a PlayStation3 amongst other DLNA devices...
3) ...with the media server application built in - something that works straight out the box/no further software installation on the NAS needed...
4) ...that also has wireless router functionality.

5) ...that also had a cable modem! (this one is just thrown out there just in case, but im sure you cant get a cable modem + router)

There is something called "Freecom DataTank Gateway WiFi 1TB" (NAS+Router) but its not a DLNA media server.

If there is not such device then can anyone recommend a PS3 compatible NAS that has a built in media server. Please only recommend if you have used such device and are very happy with it and have had no problems.

Many thanks for all your help.

We're in the process of migrating away from an ancient AIX Unix server that also happens to take in faxes and save them as PDFs to another server via shared location. The services that handle that pooped out today.

A quick and possibly more permanent solution for the fax --> PDF on shared location is needed. Right now the fax is coming in via analog lines, but in the future we'll need support for VoIP-based fax (so, Ethernet).

I have been using WHS for the past week or so, and I really love its potential. The problem I'm having with it at the moment is that certain computers' backups seem to fail inexplicably, and so far I haven't been able to figure out why. If I can, I'd love to stay with WHS.

If I can't get WHS to work reliably, then I'm looking for a good alternative backup solution for my ~10 Windows computers. Here's what I would like:

* Management from one central location. I love how I can install the Windows Home Server Console on each client computer, and then I can manage all of the backups from one place. It's much easier than running around to each computer to configure the backups.

* Single-instance storage or deduplication. A huge potential HDD space saver, when you have a lot of wasted space with two computers backing up the exact same file.

* Bare-metal restore. Again, I love how WHS makes it easy to restore using a boot CD and a network connection. That way, in the event of a client hard drive dying, I just pop a new drive into the computer, reload the image, and we're back to normal without having to worry about reinstalling Windows, software, drivers, et cetera.

* Price! WHS is a steal at roughly $100 with support for up to 10 computers. Seems many client-server backup programs can easily cost $400 or $500, and that's a little steep for me at the moment.

I would prefer to run Windows on the server, but if the best solution ... Read more

what would be the best setup for this thing?
keep in mind it has to be one pc as we're not allowed to have more than one pc running as a server on the Business ADSL we've got.

My knowledge is quite limited but could anyone provide some insight and/or recommendation of the following type of servers (hardware). That is, should we looking to go for the RackMount servers or Blade? To provide some context, were essentially a small team of less than 15 people but looking to expand over the years, we trade daily and have a huge amount of data input. Server hardware is something we do not wish to go cheap (but within reason for a small shop like ours) on given how crucial it is, simply we want something that is effective and wont create any major headaches in the future.

Appreciate any guidance you can give:

Min Requirements (I've been told I have been misquoted - but this what I was told):
- Server is to have 8 or 16 cores (2 to 4 CPUs) using the fastest processor available and 4GB memory.
- Raid 1 with 2x15k hard drives and Raid 10 (1+0) array are required for log and data either via direct storage or SAN.

Recommendations made to us:

Rackmount: DL360 G7 Model 579240-421 (1 Xeon 5650/6Gb Mem)
Raid 10 of 4x15k 72Gb drives Model 512545-B21

Blade: BL460c G6 Model 595725-B21 (1 Xeon E5650/6Gb Mem) with HP SB40C Blade

iam asking this because, i am using wingate proxy server, there is often problem with it.
so i want to know, whether there is any hardware proxy material so that i can buy it and use it
reply me as early as possible

Answer:hardware proxy server

There are internet appliances that are very expensive that allow you to share a connection. Just get a Cable/DSL router and a switch chained to it if you need more ports.

I am looking to run SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 server and I need to buy a new server. I have approximately 75 users who will use Exchange and about 5-10 users who will use SQL. I was going to buy a server with dual Xeon processors, 2GB RAM & RAID 5.
I was told that I should not use RAID 5 and that I should use RAID 1.

My question is, why not RAID 5? I checked online and found that RAID 5 is recommeded for email and database servers, so why would I be told not to use RAID 5 and to use RAID 1?

Answer:Server Hardware Requirements?

raid 5 uses multiple drives and it is hot swappable. If 1 drive dies, you can put a new one in and it will rebuild itself. it is fault tolerant. Raid 1 is mirroring. whatever data you have it, is copied to both drives, it is fault tolerant. Generally speaking, you get a lot better performance with raid 5. You could use raid 15 if you wanted, it is a where you mirror your raid 5. i personally would just use raid 5, depending how many disks you get

Am new and have been wondering for some time how you go about replacing a single processor on a server with a faster processor. Maybe even installing additional processors and upgrading the operating system for multiple processes

Answer:Hardware installation on a server

Good question. What motherboard is it running? That way I can try to find out some info on it.

I'm wondering if all the CPUs have to be identical, or would it run with different speeds... I am leaning toward identical, but I'd like to pull the specs to be sure.

I the server is only running a single processor, period, then changing it out would be just like changing a cpu on a PC.

I'm in need of some suggestions on what type of PC (hardware requirements) would be good to run versions of Windows Server. The PC would not be used for business purposes, purely for learning. All I need is for the PC to run Windows Server and run it without being too slow ie, I want an old PC to run Windows Server not a new one but I dont know what would be sufficient.

So if anyone can provide some suggestions, such as a PIII 700mhz, 256MB RAM etc it would be great.

Thank you.

We're starting to plan a server migration. Mgmt wants us to follow procedures similar to a recovery process, which means they want us to restore a backup. We backup our servers a couple different ways. One is to a online hosted service and another is to tape using Symantec Backup Exec. The catch to this is that we're buying different hardware for the new server. Backup Exec has IDR to cover this; see link below. I wanted to ask if anyone has been through a similar process and if they would share the experience.

Have you resolved this issue yet?
I would be happy to give you some more info on a VPS solution if you're considering that avenue.

I'm planning to build a new data server for my small business. Very small businesss. I don't need enterprise capabilities since we only have 5 client PCs in the network. I have a good idea of what I want in the system... except for the video card. The server won't be used as a workstation at all, so I don't need all of the features that are loaded on video cards that are found in every tech shop. I just want something simple. Can anyone recommend a brand and model?

Also, the following is a list of what I plan to put into the server. If anyone sees any mistakes that I might be making, please steer me in the right direction.

Abit KX7-333 mother board
Athlon XP 1900 CPU
Antec SX635 Mid Tower
350W Power Supply
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
Standard Floppy
CD Writer (brand not yet determined)
3COM 56K Modem
Net Gear NIC
2 UDMA 133 7200 RPM 60 GB HDD
(maybe raid, but I'm not knowledgeable on the set up)
15-inch Monitor
Standard keyboard & mouse
NT 4.0 OS with SP6

I don't need sound of any kind.

Thanks for your time.

I'm taking a college course in networking basics. I have an assignment that requires me to spec out a server for a small business network that supports less than 30 users. I have found sites where I can pick and choose servers and server hardware upgrades, but I don't know what is overkill or underkill.

Can anyone refer me to a site that offers guidelines to help me with my research?

Many thanks,

I have to PC's of similar spec, and I can't decide which one is better to run game servers on like COD, COD4, UT2004 ect and a teamspeak server. Both run windows XP Pro
(This is only for a LAN btw)
First one is an old HP ProLiant Server ML 310 G1
It has a 2.80Ghz CPU
2gb RAM PC2100R
2 WD800 setup in RAID 0 (supposedly 7200 rpm but they are old now)
Intergrated 1gb/s network card.
Only has USB 1.0 ports
IDE Raid Controller
Also put page file on another intenral system disk

Or a Dell Optiplex GX270
2.6Ghz Pentium 4 With Hyper Threading.
1.5 Gb RAM DDR PC2700
PCI 1gb/s Network Card
WD5000 Harddrive (seems to get very hot short time, case has s*** airflow but nothing i can do about that)
Has USB 2.0
Overall the Optiplex seems the faster PC, but the harddrive although new (about 8 months old) is rather loud / cranky

The Proliant is about 6-7 years old atleast, but has more RAM and slightly faster CPU but with hyper threading on the optiplex, would the slightly faster cpu make any difference or not?. However even with the RAID setup, it still seems to have the harddrive as the limiting factor and is noticable secong lag every now and then.
EDIT: Also just bought a high speed usb memory stick, so was thinking i could use a program like eboostr to act as vista ready boost?

Also was thinking of switching the fast ram to the ProLiant server, would this help at all? currently it has ECC Ram, can you mix the too or not?
Just wondering what your guys opiions ... Read more

Hey Guys and Gals:
I have a Compaq Prolaint ML370 server that does not want to turn on.
Seriously: YES! The power cable is connected and yes I press the Button!
The Leds on the mother board and Raid card are on but when I press the power button nothing goes on not even the main fan on the tower.
The interesting thing is that the power leds on the power connectors are off, but the server seems to be getting power.
Another crazy thing is that there are three small leds lights in the middle of the motherboard and when they go on everything seems to start going, but then they just turn off and the system does not turn on.
It seems like the system is not holding on to the power charge.
I have checked all the cabling and everything seems to be on least I thing they are...
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful...thanks a million!
The one and only grateful one......TASKWON....."smiling always fixes everything!"

Hello there folks,

i recently bought myself a little server. Now i want to test it for high availability and endurance. What tool can be recommended? I normally use the linux tool stress, but this only gives me evidence for short time usage.
I would also like a tool which is os independent and that tests all installed components.

Does anybody know what Dell or HP uses for stability and high availability tests?

All information is very appreciated! Even if the solution is non-free!

I'm looking for any hardware recommendation for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. Can be pre-build (Dell/HP) or something DYI. It will be development system with three databases (1st - 20 tables and 2nd - 50 tables and 3rd - 2 tables) and around 3000 new records each day overall.

Thanks for any suggestion.

Answer:Hardware recommendation for MS SQL Server 2008 R2

First of all, I would not go with a custom-built machine. If you're doing any production work, having a top-tier vendor with an on-site SLA and direct access to the exact identical parts throughout the warranty period is very important.

Few thoughts come to mind:
1. Will users be remoting into machine to use it, or interfacing with the data through a web/client application?
2. Is the database part of a vendor product? If so, what product? If this is part of a custom/homemade solution, what can you tell us about it?
3. What kinds of data will this be returning? Any embedded types, such as blobs? Any idea on column and row counts, both for the pool of data and some potential resultsets?
4. What is the network and infrastructure like going from user to database and back again?

5. What is your budget? Do you have any existing business discounts with top-tier vendors?
6. What is your uptime and availability requirement?
7. Anyone familiar at your site with backup/rollback procedures of databases and transactions in SQL Server? If so, have you decided how to roll this in with existing backup procedures of your other data?

Hi all,

We have system for our work that uses a web/application server and a database server. Around 150 people use this application and the data stored are usually text, ms office documents, pdf files and images. Suppose that about 50 people are using the system at any given time, what do you think will need better hardware specs, the database server or the web/application server?

Could you give any recommendations for the hardware specs? Like cpu, ram? A friend of mine suggested that it would be good to use the nVidia Tesla GPU for parallel processing. Is this a good idea or is this going a bit overboard?

This is more of a hardware / networking question. Here is what's going on.

Currently we have a Whatsup Gold Dell T400 server that just can't handle both WhatsUp and MSSQL. We are deciding to split the boxes up and get a R510 (Or T610, depends on the price our rep can get for us) for the SQL server and keep WhatsUp on the T400. The hardware requirements will be very much satisfied (1xQuad core, 8 gig ram, 300 gig 15k SAS drives, 64 bit Win2k8, dual GigE NICs) with the new server but I've never worked with SQL server that was as utilized as this one so here is my question:

What type of network congestion will this create being there will be a lot of traffic going between these two boxes? Since both boxes have GigE NICs, I'll probably be putting them on their own GigE switch since the rest of the network is 10/100 so I'm hoping that if there are any network problems they would be resolved.

I've heard of fiber channel but don't know what it is or if it would be worth the cost in this (as I would need fiber channel cards in both servers).

What is the best way to set this up? I guess I'm just looking for some insight from some SQL gurus.

Answer:MS SQL Hardware server setup questions

1 GB should be fine, i would break them off into their own VLAN if there is going to be a lot of broadcast traffic to cut down on congestion

I am looking for a solution where I can plug a USB device into it, configure it with an IP, then install software on a remote system and have the USB device show up as if it was plugged into that PC, then I would install the drivers for the device.

Is there such thing as this? Basically, I want to plug a USB device somewhere on the network, into a VM that is in our ESX environment, without having to physically attach it to one of the hosts then force the VM to not move. I want it to be software based at the VM end, but not require a computer at the device end.

I'm finding lot of stuff on Google, so I'll continue going through, but if anyone has used something like this before, it would be great to hear of it.

Edit: This looks like it may do what I want, but not much details.

Answer:USB over IP hardware server, software client?

The siig one is terrible. I tried it with a client a while back, but had to replace it because it just wasn't reliable. I switched them to a Belkin network usb hub that has been pretty stable. The software isn't great and doesn't run as a service, so I have to leave a console session open to maintain the connection, though.

I have the opportunity to buy some hardware but I'm having a tough time finding out what the specs are of the equipment. I'm not real familiar with blade equipment so I might end up passing on this hardware, I'm looking at this hardware for office use but since there is so much I will probably resell some of it unless I get a major influx of business.

Can blade servers be used outside the "cage"? I don't see a PSU on these things so I'm wondering is a PSU can be rigged to attach to it by making an adapter with 12v & 5V rails. Basically getting either a regulated Bench PSU or modified computer PSU to a custom build connector to run the units.

The stats list that each of these have 2 Opteron 2.4 Ghz CPU's and 8000 series MOBO chipset, so it seems like these are pretty new CPU's? Can anyone help identify possible CPU's from this info?

Also, it says that the RAM available is 4x4GB 333MHz, 400Mhz speed, what does that mean? Which speed is that, I've seen other servers list that as well- My IBM has the same PC2-3200 4GB sticks that say 333Mhz on them but all info pn the net say 400Mhz. Any ideas?

This stuff is at an auction house and the only info available is the following:
3 Gigabit LAN adapters
2 AMD Opteron 2.4 GHz Number of Installed Processors 2
16gb installed - 4x4 GB DDR SDRAM - RAM Speed 333 MHz, 400 MHz Number of Memory Slots 8 x DIMMs
Motherboard Chipset AMD Opteron 8000
Storage Maximum... Read more

Blades have proprietary ports. So unless you're hellbent on hacking something together, your answer is "no".

Honestly, I'd say skip this purchase. The extra cost to get this stuff working might exceed your budget. It's better to get something new, or at least has a warranty and SLA.

I am debating on Windows Home Server, Vista Home Premium, Windows 7.

I am building a another pc pretty much for a NAS and a tivo. I was thinking about getting WHS just to get used to servers and the remote access, but it only supports up to 3gigs. I was thinking about just getting Vista and sharing the 2 terabyte harddrives so I can get 4/8gigs of ram.

Also I was wondering what I would really need to run this.? I dunno what type of graphics card I would need to have a NICE 1080p display off my tv. I will give the specs I was thinking about buying. This will be hooked up to my Samsung 32" 1080p tv with a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard.

ASRock N68PV-GS AM2+ $50
AMD Kuma X2 7750 Black Edition $60
Radeon HD 4830 $90
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 $58.99
Samsung IDE 22X DVDR DVD Burner $24
Cooler Master 460W $35
Antec Three Hundred $60
x2 Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $198

The only problem I have with the build is the motherboard only has four sata ports...

Answer:Server/HTPC OS/hardware question

WHS is what you want then. You don't need to worry about memory requirements, as it would run just fine with even 1 GB of memory. WHS will work as a NAS, and stream your music and files to your Xbox as well.
