PC dies randomly, accompanied by loud fan

Question: PC dies randomly, accompanied by loud fan

I've just bought the components for a new PC, and a friend has built it for me. Everything works fine for hours at a time, I can be playing games, browsing the internet, whatever. Then all of a sudden the PC cuts out, exactly as it would in a power cut, except for an almighty fan noise that kicks in and stays on until I hold the power button down to force the power off. When I say an almighty fan noise, I mean the loudest noise I've ever heard a PC make. I thought it was a hair-dryer turning itself on in the room the first time it happened.

Temperature doesn't seem to be an issue, everything's always around 40 degrees, and before I took it home the guy who built it stress tested it for hours up to 90 degrees without any problem. It has always cut out during web browsing (never whilst gaming) although that's probably just a coincidence.

Any suggestions? I literally have no clue whatsoever, what with being somewhat PC illiterate.

Preferred Solution: PC dies randomly, accompanied by loud fan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Answer:Win XP randomly Dies

You can test the PSU with a multimeter. Do a search on the web and you will find info on how to do this. Also, make sure the memory you put in is good. Download memtest. You'll need to put it on a bootable floppy. Then boot from the floppy and run it. It will run continously. Leave that running overnight. If it is the memory it will tell you. And if it is a problem with Winxp you'll know it because the system won't have locked up. If it does lock up the problem isn't Winxp. But rather a hardware issue.

I have a user with a dell latitude d620 laptop. Her external usb mouse stops working every few hours-- apparently when she's doing nothing out of the ordinary, the "installing new hardware" dialog comes up randomly, and when she cancels out of it, the mouse will stop working at a slightly later time. Even the red LED light on the bottom of the mouse goes out.

We've tried different models USB mice, attaching it directly to a USB port on the laptop, via the USB port on the laptop dock, and even with a USB->PS/2 adapter via the dock's PS/2 port.... all with the same results. Every time, when the mouse is working fine, it'll pop up the 'installing new hardware' dialog, and afterwards it just suddenly stops working.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on.

She's running windows xp sp3 with symantec endpoint, all the usual office software, really nothing out of the ordinary.

Before i start, I am Running:

WinXP-Pro, Service Pack 3
2.22 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card

What appears to happen is that once in a blue moon, without any prior warning, the entire computer will lock up solid for about 15 seconds then black screen me and none of my input or output devices will work. That means, Mouse, Keyboard, sound, Monitors, etc. They all die simultaneously. The odd part is, the computer is still working as far as I can tell as the system doesn't even hiccup.

It WAS doing this more than it is now, however it seems to have reduced somewhat. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my power supply as me replacing the 350 watt supply with a 550 watt supply (for a completely different problem) seems to have reduced the occurence of this issue. Instead of happening once or twice a week it now happens once or twice every 2 or 3 weeks. It's still annoying when it happens. Anyone have any clue?

Answer:windows randomly dies

When you boot back into your machine...check the event logs and see whats happening just prior to the failure. If you can, check after a couple of occurrences and see if there are any similarities that might point you in the right direction. Anybody else have an idea?

Hello. I am in need of advice once again. I'm staying at my uncles house who uses Keyon internet service so its like broadband with some sort of dish? Anyways...

The speeds were pretty random and slow. Spikes of 3000 pings and averages of 600. Updated the firmware (7 years old) and average is under a hundred now. However the internet still just completely dies for random amounts of time... 2 seconds to a few minutes. Pings timeout to google or yahoo but not my router.

As far as the setup goes, there is a dish or antennae they have aimed a little dish on the roof towards a few miles away. The "modem" is in a plastic box attached to it. The cable runs into literally the cheapest "splitter adapter" ive ever seen, which wont work if you hook up the modem line into "data out" and the router line into "data in", which confuses me in the first place. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Anyways, I tried wifi and wired connection. I didn't try to bypass the router completely but I don't think it will make a difference. I decided to get a ladder and look at the "modem" and I was a little shocked to say the least. I opened up the big plastic thing that stores it and it literally is just a piece of like motherboard mounted with one little screw, covered in ladybugs and cobwebs. So I sighed and just left it alone.

So now, average ping is very tolerable. 50-100. Speed is at about 2mbps which is fine. I just don... Read more

Question: Y500 randomly dies

Hello, Borught a y500 on amazon a few months ago, its runs great. However, the laptop suddenly just dies randomly, no blue screen, no shut down menu. It just dies, I reboot and check event viewer and its says it crashed(kennel-power). So then I checked for viruses, ran scans for chkdsk, sfc /scannow, and memory diagnostics, everything was fine. It also didn't overheat since the laptop died without gaming at all. The barrtery was plugged in as well I reset windows 8 just to check if its the OS's fault. It just died again today. If it's a hardware issue, what can I do to find out what component of hte computer is wonky? Would the limited warranty help me?

I just received my new X1 Carbon yesterday. When I booted it up the first time the computer died after I set up username and password in Windows. Next time the same screen appeared but the username was ofcourse taken already. I logged into windows and the computer died. After 10-20 HDD checks the computer logs into windows and I can install some software (Visual Studio etc), but then it just dies again. Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  I've tried to format and reinstall windows but it doesn't help, sometimes I can use it for one hour, and sometimes just for 10 seconds.  I can't really say that I can see a pattern in this whether I'm using the AC chord or not.. I've also done a memory check and a harddrive check without any errors. I guess I have to return it and wait for a new one.. really disappointing =(  Any ideas Lenovo?

Answer:X1 Carbon randomly dies

>>  Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  When this happened to me on my PC a couple years ago, the problem was my one of my fans had died (either the power supply's fan or a system fan; can't remember which.) .  The system was shutting itself off as a defensive reaction to overheating.

Not sure if I should post this here or the networking forum but I assume some nice patron will direct me to the correct place if I'm wrong.

For a while now, and for no apparent reason, my internet connection completely dies. But, it's only to my computer. My computer will slow down DRAMATICALLY, stuttering violently as I try to do anything. But if I restart my computer it comes back on as if no problem was ever there.

I am hooked through a router through an ethernet cable and my wife is connected to it wirelessly and she is never affected.

Is this an XP problem, hardware, or maybe even the hardwire ports of my router?

Help! =(

Hi! T420 touchpad dies and trackpoint keeps on working. Sometimes after some time the trackpoint may also die. After boot, touchpad & trackpad recovers and is working maybe for an hour, or a day. Then it reoccurs. This happens randomly on some T420's, while other T420's doesnt encounter it never-ever. Any tips how to troubleshoot this one? Ran Lenovo PC Doctor and everything is fine, also cant find anything suspicious in Windows logs. Thanks in advance!

My computer has been randomly dying when i play graphic intense games. (Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, etc) The monitor says no signal and goes to standby and the sound plays the last sound playing for a few loops. I need to hold down the power button to turn it off. Sometimes after this happens the computer refuses to turn on afterwards, i would have to try a couple of times.

I have tried booting with only 1 of the 2 ram sticks (for both) and came with the same results. If the computer was already able to boot, it will. If it wasn't, it wont. I do not have an extra video card to test, and do not want to buy one until i know it REALLY is the problem.

Any input/ suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

I've had  a X41 Tablet for about 2.5 years now.  Just recently in the past month it will randomly die on me, meaning it will lose all power (No shutdown screen, nothing).  If I try to turn it back on, nothing will happen.  If I plug in the AC adapter, still no power.  The only way I can get it to start back up is if I remove the battery, then place it back in forcefully or wiggle the battery around while it is back in the slot.  If it does restart, the battery is still charged like nothing had happened.  So  it isn't the battery losing it's charge.  I even tried putting another battery in from one of the X41 tablets in our office after the computer had died and it wouldn't start.  My thoughts are it has something to with the connection on the board.  Any other thoughts or ways to fix this? Thanks,JohnMessage Edited by cranjx on 06-11-2008 10:34 AM

I've had this laptop over a year now, and just recently I've noticed when I leave it on a while and come back, either the audio of the entire laptop will die, or online videos just won't play. After restarting it goes back to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. I'm not sure what to do here. Can anyone help me out?

Answer:Audio/Video randomly dies?

You are not alone with this problem, since the last windows 8 update there is sound problems with a lot of PCs. You can try this quick solution here :

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

This should solve your problem for now, we need to wait for Microsoft's next windows 8 update, it hopefully will fix the problem in a more permanent way.

Hi everyone, I've been having the same problem for months now and have finally decided to try to get some help after attempting multiple fixes. I use both a wired connection and wireless connection on my new laptop depending on where I am in the house (if I'm hooked up to my docking station its wired, otherwise i'll be on the wireless). The wired connection works fine, but the wireless connection will often completely die on me without any apparent cause. I'm pretty sure the problem is with my laptop due to the following reasons:

1) My dad uses the same connection when he works from home, and told me he doesn't have any problems with it.
2) Just for testing services, I tried using a neighbors WiFi connection, and received the same results.

I've tried changing my DNS server between OpenDNS, Google's DNS, etc. and have not had any luck. I made sure my wireless cards weren't sleeping by un-checking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. I uninstalled Hamachi to make sure it wasn't messing up any of my settings and still had the same problems. I've updated all my drivers and even re-installed them.

Just to describe what exactly happens during these disconnects, any live connections prior to the point where the internet disconnects stay alive (usually, such as Skype calls, AIM connections, certain games, etc.) and will stay open until closed. Web pages behave in a similar fashion, and in fact will ... Read more

Got my X1 Carbon yesterday. Does have the loose clickpad. Worse issue - it would power down randomly - as in you are typing and suddenly it goes completely dead, as in "lights out" or someone pull the plug type dead. Also does not sleep properly - often when it goes to sleep it dies and you get an improper windows shutdown warning when you restart it. Happens both with AC power and battery power. Was on hold for 1.5 hours trying to reach a sales rep to make an exchange and got disconnected. Tried to do factory restore just to see what will happen but F11 on startup does not work. The notebook looks great but otherwise I can't say I am very happy with my experience.

My internet connection on my Vista machine dies after a few hours. If I restart, the connection will work again, but will die after a few hours again. I've used my computer with several different routers and for example in my friends' home network so I know the problem is in my computer because the internet connection always dies the same way. Usually if I'm listening music from my Spotify, that connection oddly stays on with that, same goes with some java based games like net poker and so on...messenger connection problem diagnostics say that problems are in the ports. Sometimes i've just been too tired to reboot and just kept doing something else with my computer without the internet connection then maybe an hour later the connection comes back to life. This problem is getting kinda old already that it's not funny anymore. Would appreciate if somebody had even a slight suggestion to repair this problem.

Well... I had a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on this very machine (the one in my preferences) for almost 3 years until the moment when I said to myself: OK, time to refresh. And that only because my port 80 would die sometimes....sometimes thrice an hour for 10-15 min, sometimes twice a day. But it would happen every day. I re-installed with the hope it was just a bad Win installation but it happened again after just an hour in. What I tried? Well, I certainly tried a new router, but it didn't help. I knew it wouldn't since I also run Linux and OS X in home network and none is affected by this. I scanned old and new Win 7 with every possible malware finder, antivirus..etc. Even bought one (I have an "allergy" when it comes to A/Vs and such in general).. I went drastic today, I disconnected all devices (hdds, usbs, dvdroms, pcie) just to prove my point.. left a single 60 GB SSD with brand new win 7 with default drivers .. Took several hours but I still lost port 80 (it seems to be just port 80 since only browsers and windows LIVE are affected on my system)...Skype, FTP, rsync.. they'll all work just fine while nothing else web-wise does.

Help please! Any suggestions will be tested and reported.

Answer:Port 80 dies randomly, everything else works

What do you mean by "port 80 dies"? skype, ftp all works as you say. So not a tcp/ip routing/connection problem.

My computer is being extremely odd right now. Randomly, usually while gaming but at other times also, it will just die. When this happens, it kinda just freezes while repeating the same sound on a loop. It loses all video and sounds like all the insides shut off. When it does this, hitting reset doesn't really work, and usually I cannot turn it off and back on. If I try, I get no beep in POST which indicates to me it would be CPU or MoBo...maybe a power supply?

If I unplug the power from the back for a minute, I can restart it and it will go through POST with the beep and all, and say CPU is unworkable or has been changed, and then play fine for anywhere between 5 minutes to many hours with no problems, then it will happen again.

I cannot tell what wattage my PS is. I built most of this computer about 5 years ago, and have since modded the power supply case, and lost the sticker. The CPU is the original one I got when I built it, the MoBo is 4 years old, and the video card is new.

Hello there,
I've been pondering around this problem for quite a while now and I finally decided to inquire the mighty crowds of computer wisdom i.e. you all

I've had this exact same problem in my previous system (with Windows 7 32-bit and quite a bit different internals) but it wasn't nearly as frequent as it is now (with Windows 7 64-bit and brand new CPU/MB/RAM/GPU) - however, this problem never happened on my previous box while it had Windows XP installed for a short while. Namely, the audio in Windows would stop working at random, every app that uses an audio interface would freeze when attempting to access any sink, I can't change the volume or mute anything, and I cannot even reset the Windows Audio service (reset times out) when that happens - the only solution is to reboot after which everything works just fine. The only difference between my old system and this one is that now I rarely get the reset procedure to 'freeze' on 'explorer.exe - Playing log-off sound...' (requiring to force restart to continue the process), but now it more often hangs at 'Shutting down...' screen requiring a physical restart.

My audio stack consists of the integrated sound (disabled, I don't need it, but in my previous setup it was enabled) and two USB-based sound sinks, namely Logitech Z Cin?ma speakers (Default Device) and Logitech G930 headset (Default Communications Device). Both are connected directly to the motherboard USB ports so it's not a problem with wonky USB hubs.

Hiyya inco and welcome for starters I am definitely no expert mate I run a straight forward Asus Xonar DG card (the Xonar supports 7:1 systems) with my Ivy B with a Logitec Z 506 speaker set up and I have no probs at all, and it is a fairly cheap card at that.
Now I don't know what your audio set up is and it sounds like Ben Hur to me but just as a suggestion why not try a different brand card? I just really like the Asus control module that comes with mine and Asus do a really nice range of sound cards.

I am just getting a gut feeling the Logitec card is not the full dollar.

Hi there,

I can't seem to figure this problem out. Every so often (from seconds to a couple minutes) my internet connection will fail, but only for less than a second. Typically no one would even notice this, but it becomes a problem when you use software like Messenger or you play games online. The disconnection is long enough to sign you off.

I've been watching a ping I set to for a good 10 minutes, and sure enough, there are occasional spots where for just 1-3 attemps it will time out, then get replies just fine again.

I use a wired ethernet connection, not wireless. The ethernet port is part of my motherboard, its a fairly modern motherboard, not an old one, and I made sure the driver for it was up to date. Any ideas?

Hi Everyone

In my previous house I would lose connection to the internet about 2-3 times a week. Since moving into my new house it happens more like 5-15 times a day. The internet light on my modem goes out and the broadband light blinks on and off.

95% of the time when I lose the connection it is for less than 2 minutes. But on some occasions it can take a half hour to work again.

Some more info:
- It happens on all 6 computers/devices in my household at the same time. (2 Macs, Win7 PC, iPad, iPod, PS3).
- All devices are connected wirelessly to modem. But, I have also tried Ethernet and still have same problem.
- I have tried 2 modems (including a brand new one that my ISP sent after I complained).
- I have tried using different jack points and cables.
- When the connection fails, I am still able to wirelessly access my modems config page. So wifi connection is not the issue.
- My ISP sent a technician out. He replaced one cable out by the road, but this did not solve the problem.

I have spent a few hours over multiple days on the phone with my ISP. First they said there was no problem with the line. Then they said there is definitively something wrong with the line. Then nothing wrong, then something wrong. Finally after they monitored the line for 3 separate 24 periods, they decided that the problem was solved. And I thought so too... I had good connection for about 36 hours. But then it started failing again, so far today I have lost connection about 10 times... Read more

As the title says, my mouse stops working for a couple of seconds and then starts working perfectly again. It mainly happens when I am playing BF3, the game freezes for a second, then I hear the usb-removal sound Windows makes and the game unfreezes but the mouse is dead, then game freezes again for a second and mouse starts working. During the moment mouse is dead all other USB connected things works, only mouse that dies.
It has happened a few times before when im not in any game.

Why is this happening? I have never had any problem with this before.
I have tried putting my mouse a different USB port and it helped for a day or two and then it happened again.

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no choice but to restart my computer.2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the power button, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen). And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. I have Lenovo T500 Thinkpad for around one year. The laptop started to die randomly without any notification, no blue screen, no shut down, it just dies as if there is no power to the laptop. First I thought it could be a problem with the battery so I replaced my battery with the battery of another Lenovo T500. Even after that the problem persisted. So I removed the battery and just connected the laptop to AC power. The laptop does not die any more and I didnt face any issues. What could cause a problem like this? Whenever I connect the battery, the battery icon on the task bar says its charging and even if I use the battery alone the laptop works fine for sometime until it dies randomly. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

it seems to happen most often when playing video or playing facebook games of any type. there is no warning the computer is just OFF. it has done this in safe mode as well and i wasn't even watching video or playing any games then. the only time it has done this before it was over heated. now sometimes it is hot and others it is not so it really seems random. no viruses, no malware, regular maintenance is kept up. if i can find a solution other than formatting the machine that would be great, or at least knowing if formatting would do me any good at all. i have downloaded hijack this and the TSGInfo follows:

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks, and have Windows 10.  A couple of days or so ago, I unplugged it and took it into another room to use.  It was on battery at least 6 hours with no problems.  It's been plugged in since then. I just looked at the battery meter and it shows only 35% power remaining.  Why is it not fully recharged by now?

I got this laptop 2 months ago and it worked just fine but lately it's been dying randomly (the battery was at 98%) for absolutely no reason, no prompts all i can hear is a sound coming from the hard disk just as if the laptop was force shut down by holding the power button key. The laptop temperatures weren't high at the time (mostly all components @ 45°C). I use this laptop for college and it's been REALLY unreliable & I can't return it at this time since I'm at a dorm and i don't think it would even get a RMA since it happens randomly (you can't expect it at all - i only had word and microsoft edge opened and poof it's dead) - also i can always start it again instantly but SOMETIMES it dies again in the booting process. Also I successfully ran an Aida64 stress test until the battery died normally (it did NOT shut down). Any suggestions on what i should do? Edit: oops i sent this twice by accident

Yet another problem with my peice of crap i call the "computer".

I got a new monitor at xmas, hoping to solve the problems i was haveing with my old one too no avail however.

Sometimes when im playing games etc it just looses the signal from the computer. Im using a 9800 pro 128MB graphics card, and cant understand why this is happening. The computer is still running fine though. It just wont display anything. Why could this be? I only got the card 3 months ago, it shoudlnt be doing this. It also at random intervals decides to artifact and under both circumstances i have to switch off for a while and wait before it will work again.

Things ive checked.

The card i sseated properly.
uninstalled it and reinstalled it
using latest drivers.
Using Direct X 9c
On board VGA automatically disables when AGP card is plugged in.
when uninstalled it seems to run fine from the motherboard connection (Hence im thinking dodgy card)
The car dis connected to the power supply as is nescessary.

Im totally stumped here. I can live with the situation but its not ideal, especially whe im playing gamesa and it just dies on me. Its as though the card is stopping sending the signal to my monitor.

Could this be a dodgy card? If so who do i contact about it? The place i bought the card from, or the manufacturer??

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I have had my 3000 N100 Thinkpad for around 2 years now and after a year and a half I realised the Battery was no longer charging, soon after this happened my Laptop would just die randomly, when I say die I mean there is no shutdown screen  it is as iff all power to the p.c. suddenly stopped. At first I though it must be a Virus but after numerous scans and re-installing Windows the problem re-occured, Today I opened the P.C. and checked the fan as I thought maybe it was over heating and eventually giving in, I was relieved to see a load of dust and used the vacumn to clear the fan.I thought that would fix the problem but now if anything it seems worse, I know the battery is dead as the charge level is 0 and the battery indicator on the front of the laptop flashes 5 times organge before disappears completely...In a Final attempt I have disconnected the battery completely and am now running it only on the power adapter, I don't know if this will work but I need to do something...What could cause a problem like this, all of my settings are correct my power settings are set to always on with no hibernation.Any help will be wonderful. Thanks

Maybe the battery just went bad. The only way I can think of to test it would be to try the battery in another Lenovo 3000 or to try a new battery in your Lenovo 3000.

I've been having an issue with my X270 laptop since I bought it. The laptop is running Windows 10. What happens is randomly (this can take weeks, or days) the trackpad and pointing stick completely stops working. The only solution is to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them using an external mouse. I've tried various versions of the drivers, including the latest, and it still continues to happen. Any solutions to fix this?

the last two days my machine has suffered a crash with similar symptoms. First, the display goes blank. I can see some disk activity. This continues for maybe 20-30 seconds and then the machine shuts down. Yesterday, I had to restart the machine twice b/c the first attempt also resulted in a shutdown during the boot process.I thought that perhaps it was an overheating issue, but I'm not convinced of that as today there was nothing obstructing the exhaust vents (though they were a bit dusty).I'm runing windows 7 pro, 64 bit. Have an NVidia card, but I don't know about the details. Where would I find them? Thanks in advance.

If it is a W510, graphics are probably 1GB NVIDIA® Quadro® FX880M.  It is hard to diagnose from a thousand miles away, but my first guess is overheating. I suggest installing TPFancontrol (free) and monitor temperatures.

I bought new pc parts this week and also bought Windows 10 Home while I was at it, due to W7 not accepting USB 3.0. But shortly after, I started having bad audio problems when using my headset, which is connected to my motherboard's rear 3.5mm output.

The symptoms consist of:
- The audio cutting out suddenly after just a few minutes of usage, e.g. 30 seconds of youtube, combined with the microphone not picking up any audio.

- Sound panel not responding occassionally or becoming sluggish. Can pop up later when clicking on things like browser tabs.

- High Definition Audio Device disappearing from choosable outputs in the notification area.

- Realtek High Definition Device disappearing from the Device Manager.

- Random pop-ups saying that I've either unplugged an audio device or I've plugged in an audio device multiple times in a row.

- Sound panel showing activity from both random thing I'm playing, and the Test Sound button, but no sound actually playing in the headset.

- Usually the sound cuts out with a small crackle, but other times it's completely silent when it happens. When loading the desktop I can hear some crackling too.

- ARK: Survival Evolved crashing, giving me a memory write error, followed by a notification of a decive being plugged in instantly after.

I've tried:
- Installing the latest drivers through windows update, realtek's latest drivers, motherboard's latest drivers and various .cab updates being rejected because the drivers "are up to date&... Read more

Hello. So my computer just randomly freezes at times. It makes a loud crashing sound and the keyboard and mouse doesn't respond at all. It's also does without the sounds sometimes.
I'm on a WinXP Home SP3 Dell Vostro 1500, 2GB Ram.
This usually happens when using an resource heavy applications such as Firefox and my PC Games. It also happens when I use Microsoft word.
I gotten to a point when I uninstalled all my games, bluetooth software, and other applications I haven't used in a while. I ran an AVG scan, Spybot Search & Destroy scan, and a Malwarebytes Scan. None of the scans have found anything. I also have used CCleaner in the past.
So I'm in dire need of help to find what's wrong with my computer.

Answer:Computer randomly freezes and starts making loud noises

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes. To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.Check in all the categories. If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Hi, hope you can help me. I saw some similar posts about the fans but in my case the fans go very loud randomly and go to complete silence every 5-10 minutes with 1% - 3% CPU usage. For instance just simply browsing, not watching any videos or anything. Uninstalling Lenovo power managment utility didn't help, updating BIOS didn't help either. The room temperature is 19 degrees. The laptop is 2 weeks old and has been doing that from the very begining. Any other suggestions please?

This question has been asked by countless people, and the Internet is filled with a wild array of answers.
If you bought an HP system many years ago, and it came with Windows XP, and you have the re-installation disc, if your system dies or needs to be recommissioned because it's unreliable, can't you use the re-installation disc to install the OS onto the new system? I've heard some limitations are involved but I don't know fact from fiction on these:
1. You can reinstall only IF you upgrade the system with the same motherboard because the key for the install is tied to the serial number of the motherboard.
2. You can reinstall only if you move the hard drive of the old system to the new one (which for me would be impossible because the old drive is IDE and the new one is SATA).
3. You can reinstall only if the new computer is a model from the same vendor (e.g., if you have the reinstall disc for a Dell computer it will only work in another Dell computer).
4. If you call MS customer support and explain that your system's motherboard has died they will "reactivate" the license for you on the new system.
5. You can't do it in any scenario because your EULA will state that you agreed to install the OS on the one computer and agreed it would not be used on another system.
Anybody have any definitive answers on this issue?

Answer:T or F: Your OEM license for Windows XP dies when your system dies.

I was playing a game called Symphony, and my computer froze, accompanied by a buzzing sound coming from the speakers. Here is some useful information though, as to why this might have happened.

1. My hard drive was 15% fragmented, with only 20gb available on the hard drive... Less than ten percent of capacity.

2. My computer does not have the greatest processor in the world, and I think the game might be demanding a bit more than what my computer actually has. I believe I was playing on a high setting.

3. My computer has never had any overheating issue, so i do not think it is/was an overheating issue. I tried to recreate the issue, for about an hour, and it never froze again.

So can any of the three things I listed be the cause of the freeze? Could it just have been a blip, and my computer missed a piece of data while processing, causing it to freeze? What does a freeze, accompanied by a buzzing sound mean?

Thank you for your time.

Yesterday I stupidly downloaded a suspicious driver, and since then I've been inundated with spyware, like the IE popups asking me if I want to download various anti-spyware programs. ><

Every once in a while, Windows Defender has this pop-up:

I also now get the BSOD all the time. My computer crashes if I do any of the following:

- try to do a System Restore
- try to run my anti-virus scanner (Kaspersky Internet Security)
- try to view my C drive
- try to remove the malware with Windows Defender
- try to open iTunes

Sometimes I'll get the BSOD for no reason at all, like right after my laptop just restarted.

Here's what the BSOD looks like:

Also, my cursor will often just freeze. This never happened until yesterday.

This was seen in a previous computer which was not usable anymore due to unknown reasons and also extreme lag.

I've had this laptop for about a month now and I have used 59.8 GB (I downloaded a few large games and art programs) I scanned my computer every day with McAfee and never found anything wrong.
This happens more frequently when I switch around with programs quickly. If there is audio playing, it turns garbled. This is accompanied with a visual lag for a few moments and doesn't effect anything else as far as I know. Also happened a few times when I had no programs open except for Windows Media Player. (It's a very demonic noise that turns the most cheerful music dark. It started for the first time while I was watching a video that had to do with the anti-Christ)
I want to find the source of this problem and fix it before my new laptop ends up like the old one, please and thank you so much for your time.

Just a quick bit of background information.

I have been having a lot of GPU driver crashes (Display driver has stopped working and has recovered) and the occasional random restart with my PC recently, I took someone's advice and prevented automatically rebooting after a BSOD so I could grab the stop message.

The strange thing is, I don't seem to get the normal BSOD screen, my PC just freezes on whatever it was on at the time, I don't know if this could be due to it being GPU/Display driver related. After checking Reliability Monitor, they are definitely listed as BSOD, so I thought best to post here for a bit more information

This morning my wife was using Firefox on our computer when a new tab opened and an audio message started to play stating that a virus had been detected and telling the user to call a certain phone number to receive instructions on how to remove it. In the background was a large picture with the McAfee logo. Since I don't have ANY MAfee software installed on the computer, I was pretty sure that this was bogus. However, I was not able to close the tab; the message just kept playing. I finally started the Task Manager and killed Firefox. When I restarted Firefox, the tab opened again for a second and then disappeared. I decided to run Microsoft Security Essentials to look for any viruses, but it hasn't completed as yet. I'll also run a Malwarebytes scan as well.

Hello everyone,

For about two weeks, my computer has been acting very strange; I've been getting very sporadic BSODs with different stop codes. Last week, while playing video games, I received three BSOD codes after three consecutive restarts. They are:

Driver irql not less or equal 0x000000D1
Page fault in non-paged area 0x00000050
Bad pool header 0x00000019

This week, I have gotten less BSODs, but four days ago, when I restarted my computer, it refused to turn on and produced 4 beeps, which according to the AMI BIOS beep codes, indicates a failed timer. It hasn't returned since, but perhaps it can help diagnose my problem. Some other things I've noticed from this week's BSODs on three different occasions are: "ntoskrnl.exe" "usbehci.sys" and "classpnp.sys"

I've started having a problem in the last few weeks which seemed intermittent at first but now has become a frequent nuisance, and at one point I thought might have bricked my PC.

After a few hours of intensive graphical work in a 3D modelling application, he system froze (not completely, I could still navigate some windows) for about 20 seconds. This meant music stopped, and the application stopped responding. Then it seemed to regain its bearings and I carried on as normal.

I noticed however as this happened, there was a short wirring noise from either a fan or a disk, followed by a very short blip from the internal speaker. Not even as long as the standard 1-blip beep code you get when you switch on.

Anyway this happened maybe once a day after long usage. Until yesterday when the same thing happened in gaps of maybe 5 minutes, making carrying on working very difficult.

So I did a reboot, at which point the computer took ages to load up, and told me the registry was corrupt. I ignored that and tried again. It took a while but it booted up.... and everything went excruciatingly slow.

Just opening folders took 5 minutes, with the beeping sound happening everytime I did anything. I switched off and went to bed.

Today it seems ok. It's done it twice, after I tried to extract a huge rar file. So I'm running chckdsk and glary utilities today, maybe even a defrag, just incase it's the disk.

Anyway, that's the summary.
I'll try an... Read more

For the past few days I have been plagued by frequent display driver crashes, These crashes usually recover immediately, but sometimes they cause complete system crashes with BSODs (although I cannot see the BSODs because the screen goes to black). Crashes happen for seemingly no reason. Sometimes it takes hours, sometime seconds. Sometimes it crashes on the login screen. Nothing in particular makes it crash more or less.

I have attempted to diagnose and/or fix the issue with a friend who works in tech support, but we haven't come up with anything so far. Last resort is obviously Windows 7 Upgrade to replace all windows files and then complete re-install after that, but obviously I wish to avoid this.

I have scanned the machine with multiple virus/spyware/malware scans with nothing coming up. I've changed the system's TDR Delay to 10 seconds via regedit. I've turned off all services and start-up programs. I've re-installed, clean re-installed, and updated my graphics driver to the newest version. Nothing works. Various explorations through out the Event Viewer hasn't lead to anything we can see might be causing the issue.

The strangest thing is that I have even had the screen crash to black in safe-mode twice today. Safe mode was the only way the machine is usable at this point, but apparently even that isn't safe.

Answer:BSOD with error 0x00000116 accompanied by display driver crashes

The video drivers you've been using are causing the problem. Try rolling back to this WHQL version.

I have already posted this in the General Discussion section but I saw there's a different thread for BSOD's so i'm posting it here again with the logs. Sorry about that. c:
First, let me tell you this issue has not been going on since a few days or just a week, but is occurring for about 3 months now.

So here's the issue, I mostly play League of Legends and mostly the first 10-15 minutes of the game go fine or just have 1-2 freezes for 2/3 seconds but as the game persists, the game starts freezing more and more and there comes a point when the background music(league has this background music tune while playing)just goes away and all I can hear is the sound of abilities. This is the point when I know my PC is going to freeze because after the sound goes away, in just 1-2 minutes the game freezes. Sometimes the freeze is for 45-60 seconds and then it comes back but after another 15 seconds the whole computer freezes again and this time it doesn't come back and the last sound which I heard keeps looping again and again.
I have completely reset my windows THRICE, used another copy of Windows 8.1 from my friend but there is no luck in them for me.
Currently, I have nothing on my system except League of Legends, TeamSpeak 3 and Garena.
Also, when my computer freezes, I've seen the event viewer for logs at that time and I noticed that my Event Viewer has like 8000 overall logs which made me a bit worried.

I am also sure of the fact that my PC can handle League a... Read more

I have read the 2 other relevant threads in SevenForums (as well as many others on other sites) but I still have not found a solution to this issue.

My Lenovo T530 will randomly freeze an application for a couple of seconds at a time. The behavior is per application ie: Outlook may freeze but I can still use Chrome. Or Chrome may freeze but Acrobat still works. It can happen to pretty much any application at any unexpected time - sometimes a few times in an hour and sometimes once every few hours. The "freeze time" varies from barely noticeable to ~5 seconds.

I have definitely connected these freezes to events 4624 (An account was successfully logged on) and 4672 (Special privileges assigned to new logon) that appear in the event viewer under the Security Logs section but it is not clear to me what may cause them.

I have performed most of the tests/SFC/device driver/bios upgrade/malware scans that have been recommended (with no change). I have not completely ruled out some strange HDD issue - but I am not sure why such behavior would just start one day (when the laptop had been working perfectly for 8 months). Also there are intensive HDD tasks that produce no errors. The symptoms are not getting worse - it has been the same since it started happening.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A sample Security Auditing 4624 event is pasted below:

Answer:Sporadic short freezes accompanied by 4624 and 4672 events

I have also now noticed that these events are immediately preceded by a 7036 event: "The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the running state."

Not sure if this is causing the slowdown or is a response to some other event that is causing the slowdown. There is some relation since the logon 4624 event is from: Process Name: C:\Windows\System32\services.exe - which activates the error reporting service.

Is there a way to know why the Windows Error Reporting Service activates?

Happy to receive any suggestions.

"Computer is regularly freezing, accompanied by loud mechanical whirring clicking noise from the front half of the computer (NOT the speakers). Likely either from hard drive or optics (CD/DVD drive). In between regular clicking/whirring is occasional singular clicks. Freezing: sometimes computer function maintains during this, i.e. a video will continue to play or I can hover over buttons to change display, however I can almost always use mouse."

That's what I've asked countless other sites but to no avail. Was wondering if anybody here could help me! I'm pretty sure the issue is with a part of the computer in the upper front half as that is where the whirring/clicking is coming from. I feel it might be the Seagate Barracuda hard drive. I recently bought all the parts and assembled this computer myself and it has been working fine, aside from PC Case Gear sending me the WRONG hard drive (ordered and payed for a 3TB, received a 2TB - only found out when I had fully installed everything as the hard drive came in just it's plastic casing and not the box).

Also a new member so if this is somehow not the right forum for this, my apologies.

Answer:Computer regularly freezing accompanied by whirring/clicking noise

As an additional - It has been happening most recently every time I turn on my computer for the past 12 hours, however after about 30mins of being on it seems to have once again subsided for the time being. I know it will happen again though and it frustrates me! It will likely not happen again for between a day and a week or two, but it will happen again.

So i listen to music on itunes and I put it on max volume, then like 20 min of me listening to music it suddenly freezes and makes a LOOOOOOOOUD sound that I can't exactly describe, its like a horn sound?? Well anyway's its very loud and the laptop gets frozen so there isn't anything I can do except press the off button to restart my laptop. Whats wrong with it? I barely got my laptop 4 months ago! And this problem only happens when I'm listening to music please help? :]]

Also I have enough ram because I barely install anything and I don't have many files like music and pictures saved on my laptop either :)

Answer:Whenever I play loud music, my laptop freezes and makes a LOUD sound??

Your computer may be overheating. Blow all the fans out with a can of compressed air. Consider a laptop cooler.
Does this happen if you listen to music through headphones?

So, I am having a very odd problem. One of which NOBODY on any website so far has posted. I was just Skyping somebody like I do everyday (or whenever I am not playing a game on the PC) and I noticed the computer getting slow. So as always, I went to task manager to see what was eating my CPU, from there I found some items named "CPU Solution (32bit)" On my apps, and other processes opened eating my CPU, after exiting out of them all they kept popping up. I right clicked and went to the .exe location to find out was something in my App Data Roaming files. That could not be deleted unless I exited out of all the processes, so I did so, and then deleted it. Problem solved right? WRONG, the deleted file automatically returned to its home in my Roaming files, and refuses to budge.
The said deleted file was the folder named "Azikcyn" the file in questions name is "nopuxu.exe" I clicked on properties and tried to deny my computer access to that particular troublesome file. No luck, it continues opening. So I decided to go to the details and the original file name was oddly enough simply "Mission" mysterious am I right?
And also, another bothersome problem is this annoying "Download complete" Windows-IE-type window that keeps popping up saying I downloaded a Java-script file. I canceled and of course was spammed with a few more.

 Annoying.png   456.66KB

Answer:"Cloud Solutions" CPU spam accompanied by repeated Unwanted Download file.

I am having the exact same problem.  Notice my system slowing down dramatically, I go look at the processes and see multiple .exe processes running showing Cloud Computing as a description.  Ending them doesn't work as they reopen.  Going directly to the file in the AppData\Roaming\ directory and trying to delete them doesn't work as a process reopens before it can be deleted.  Whatever this is, it is creating a different application name (mine is ylosub.exe) and the final directory fold name is something randomly different.  What is the same is the properties show something from "Mission".
Would love some help or insight.  Thanks in advance for any thoughtful consideration to the problem.

Hi there,
When I use headphones with my Surface Pro (Win 8) I cant hear the voices in my videos - the background music/sound effects are just too loud.

How can I fix this? I have tried using the Win 8 Video player as well as VLC Player and I still get the same issue.

I have tried the headphones on my iPhone and have no problems.

It has been a long time since i've used a Windows computer (usually have a Mac) so sorry if this is a silly question.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Voice not loud with headphones - background music too loud

You cou;d try using Winamp as it has an equalizer. Most DVDs the sound track and effects are pumped up compared to dialog. It drives me crazy, but short of demuxing, fixing the audio yourself then remuxing, trying to boost the voice frequencies is about all you can do.

I specifically bought the Toshiba Satellite (my fourth in a row) to take advantage of the lovely harmon/kardon speakers.

I find that the volume is going loud and soft all the time, specifically going softer when there appears to be something in the music (or whatever Im listening to) that would normally go louder. It's almost as if it is trying to 'normalise' the volume. Whatever is happening, it sounds terrible.

I've done a quick search on thee forums and I can't see a solution. I have seen on the greater internets (simply google Toshiba loud soft" and it pops up) someone else with the same problem.

I've messed around with the sound for hours at a time and had absolutely no luck.

I'm at my wits end. Can some please help me?

Hey everyone, I've had this laptop for a few years now and I know this hasn't always been a problem. In other topics regarding this issue, it's recommended to update your BIOS and drivers and everything. I've already done that. I think it might have been some update that started this issue. My temperature readings are reasonable in GPU-z. For some reason my laptop just starts spinning the fan really loudly, even if the room is cold. I've never felt my laptop get really hot or anything. The noise is just really loud now and it's embarassing to take it out in public. It doesn't sound BROKEN, it just sounds like when you turn on an older desktop.  My warranty has expired and I've already looked inside at the fans - they didn't appear to be damaged or dusty. I cleaned them, even used the cleaning app and the problem didn't improve at all. So basically I don't know what to do. If it's not a hardware problem, what else might it be? If it is a hardware problem, I guess I should look into getting a new laptop? The thing is, I've googled around and it seems other people have had this issue too. I haven't been hard on my laptop or anything, it just stays on my desk. Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Y40-70 Fan way too loud, quiet sometimes and suddenly gets loud

Assuming that your fans are clean and both working and the vents are clear, then you may have to simply clean the old grease, and then reapply the thermal silicone grease between the heat sink and the CPU.    I have seen where over time on laptops the heat sink compound or pad dries out and loosens, and then does not transfer heat efficiently to the heat sink; thus causing the fans to work harder to keep the CPU cool.     If you do decide to replace the compound, use a good high quality one like Artic Silver etc., make sure to clean off the old crud completely, and then just apply a nice thin layer over the entire CPU......Too much is not better.... Good Luck.

Hi everybody, I would like some help!

I recently bought a new fan to help with cooling as the summer approaches. My new fan replaces my old chassis fan but is plugged in slightly differently as it is plugged into the 3 pin mother board connector (the old one was plugged into the molex and is now positioned as an intake fan at the front).

My problem is that since I've installed the new fan my computer is actually louder than before, Everest tells me that the revs for the new fan are 5114 rpm as I type this so it's clearly working too hard. I think it's working too hard because my processor fan is only idling by comparison at 1705 rpm. Which temperature does the chassis fan use to control it's speed and why has my CPU fan suddenly become lazy since I installed the new fan? Is there anything I can do to make the CPU fan work harder and take some of the burden off of the chassis fan?

Many thanks for any help!

Answer:New fan but loud loud noise

Try speedfan, that should work.

I know the question probably sounds stupid...

I have a crummy 350 watt PSU in my system and I think it'sstarting to die. What typically happens when a PSU dies? Does it just die and you replace it or can it destroy some of your hardware?

Also, I buy from New Egg, if anyone has any suggestions on a good PSU for $50 or under feel free to link, I'm clueless about what a GOOD PSU actually is...

Thanks all!

Answer:What happens when a PSU dies?

The easiest way to tell if your PSU is near death is if you have LED's and they start to dim or if your fans are running at lower RPM's then they did when you first got them etc...

Typically when a PSU does die you just lose the ability to turn on your computer, I would say that there isn't a possibility of damage to other hardware but...

Just yesterday my 1-year old stock PSU wen't on the fritz so I went and got it replaced only to find out that it had taken my motherboard with it. So I'm having to order a new one and after I get it installed I'm hoping I don't find that my CPU, ram, video card, or anything else has died too.

Question: T43 CPU dies!

Did this occur to anyone? the workhorse of 2006 laptops T43 dies due to CPU complete failure. Here is what happened:I purchased a brand new T43 2686-DGU for ~$1500 in April 2006. I admit i have been using this laptop heavily for a long period. I love it ! I used to watch live TV, burn lots of DVDs, played 3D games.....I have noticed early this year that my laptop had been overheating, so the fan kicks in to reduce the heat. Nevertheless, it is still too hot to put on my Lap! Also, most of the time i set it to sleep mode instead of shutdown at the end of the day.Anyway, sometime in december, i tried to start it but no response. I tried all the trick to do so. NOTHING. NO POST. NO SIGN OF LIVE. NOTHING!!After lengthy investigation, it turned out that the CPU died!!! I suffered a lot after this, in terms of wasted repair time and money. It is a long story with an ebay seller that costed me $340 to replace the mobo....(details later) Anyway, did this occur to anyone, that is, CPU failure???

My worst nightmare--pls help if you can--sorry it's so long

Running a Sony RX560 with XP and SystemWorks 2003. Last week a "Programmed Analysis" automatically started and ran for about 1 1/2 hours, then asked "Would you like to format C:?" I said no, rebooted, and the system quit.

It now boots up to the Windows Welcome window, which (with some message overlaid) flickers off in about 1/2 second (before I can read it) and quits.

I have tried a) the Norton Rescue CD and, b) the three prepared 3 1/2s, with no luck. Then c) I started to run Sony's set of "System Recovery” CDs until it said to stop and back up everything.

1. Is there any way to back up this mess?
2. If I run the Sony Recovery system will it delete everything in the computer?
3. If it does, is there any way to retrieve any of it with the Norton program?

Answer:Bootup dies after Win XP Welcome

If you go into recovery it will ask you before you commit if you wish to restore or do a quick recover.

If your not using restore to set back to a proir date then use the qucik recover this will redo it with out deleting your files. Only the full recovery erases it all.

Answer:New Computer Dies, PSU?

Your PSU has enough power, what is ur voltage on the 12 rail? Slim chances that its ur PSU in terms of it not being powerfull enough, especially if its new.It could however be faulty, if ur experiencing random shut downs, especially when using much power (playing games), then it makes sence for it to be ur PSU, and since there is little chance its not good enough, it makes sence that its broken of faulty and in wich case u should return it and get a new one.Im sure u did some research before buying each part for ur PC, and since i dont know much abt PSU brands ill assume that its a good one and that the PSU isnt acting up because its cheap, even though a cheap PSU should still take a while to brake down.Any part of u PC however could be triggering this, but if a component such as the CPU, RAM or graphics card would be having a hard time (because of a fan dying out for instence), then u would see a more violent power down, and u would probably smell smoke. You will have to check to know for sure however if ur parts are doing OK. Download a program called Everest and evaluate ur PC. Google it.Last but not least, and it would make more sence then a PC hardware component malfunctioning (because we are talking of an instant power down), Windows could be the culprit. If u have a virus for instence, this could very much happen just like u have described. However, it would not make much sence having a virus so early on, and of course u say that it happens more when the system is being u... the first thing I would suggest to do is scan for malware. Use a decent scanner such as NOD32 and also Malwarebytes.

If that comes back all ok, feel free to post details of any errors in your event log. You could also attach some crash dumps for us to have a look at.

After 10 or 15 minutes, any new URL that I want to access just snaps up PAGE NOT FOUND without even involving any modem activity. Turning off the firewall makes no difference.

Even hitting the back arrow to look at previously viewed pages has the same result.

Can this be somehow an ISP thing? Or is it something nasty in my system? Re-booting the computer makes everything fine again - for another 10 minutes!

Scans with updated Symantic Anti Virus and Spybot reveal nothing infected.

Any ideas?

Answer:Ie 6 Dies After About 10 Minutes

can you check the energy settings in your modem? It could say that after 10 minutes of inactivity it will shut down.

MY PC has being acting up for like two months now
it start happening when i first got home from Chinese New Year
For some reason it just died, tried restarting it but there's nothing on the monitor and it's just blank
and a couple of hours later it comes back alive again when i tried my luck hoping it works.

Second time when it died, i felt static from my legs hair coz the PC is underneath the table,
reboot it right away and it still works

but after that if i let my PC on too long it will die, like for example if i have my Music playing, the music will skip and then it die showing BSOD in a split second which is too fast for me even to see what number it is which i need to search google with

okay when it dies, whenever i try turning it on, nothing will show up on Monitor.
CDROM will works, Fans spinning ecetra ecetra.
sometimes it even show no BSOD and die right away

i'm think it's either the harddrive like my friend had told me or it's the motherboard.

there's a few thunder storm before in KL so i wonder if mine had being triket by the thunder or something.

also happen to search from else where to find the fix, i notice someone had posted something like having a second harddrive and install windows in it so it will chkdsk the first harddrive that have problems in it since there's a partition in my first drive having problems and always have schedule of chkdsk whenever on reboot and i have no idea what to do with it

Question: Cursor just dies!

Not that I'm technical but these are the details of my laptop....

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6670 @ 2.20GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 4056 Mb
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 7 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 305142 MB, Free - 254881 MB;
Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0P993J
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated and Enabled

Most times I use my laptop the cursor simply locks. The touchpad icon in the bottom right shows that it still lives as it responds (on the icon) when it is touched. The buttons work fine but I am unable to move the arrow around the screen. If I press any key on the keyboard the cursor unfreezes for an unbelievably frustrating 5 seconds and then locks up again. Makes navigating around the computer a nightmare!

I have uninstalled the touchpad driver, updated it, reinstalled it etc many, many times. The driver, when installed, rectifys the problem for that session on the laptop but the next time I switch on I need to re-install the driver again to get normality - this entails rebooting and is doing my head in!!!

Any help or guidance would be greatly received. I was wondering if Firefox was causing it but it seems to happen whether I'm online or not. Please help!

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Question: Connection Dies

I have a PC that will not maintain an Internet connection. It will dial up fine and allow me to surf several pages, but soon after it just dies, and will not transmit any more data.

Things I've done: Replaced Modem(twice), Formatted and re-installed windows(98 and 2k), and tried a different provider. No matter what I do, the connection just dies. I know this is an impossible question, but I don't know what else to try.

ps: This question might need to be moved to the hardware forum.

Answer:Connection Dies

Question: Dial up dies...

Running K6 233, 64 meg SDRAM, 56k modem...
After about an hour or 2 of being online, I find that I'm still connected to my provider, but my modem stops communicating. The only way I can re-establish a viable connection is to restart my PC. I've checked my Internet settings and I cannot find a setting that would cause this.

How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help.
