Process of elimination regarding hardware error

Question: Process of elimination regarding hardware error

Hey all,

I've got an old desktop system which I am trying to get back into working condition. It refuses to boot, sometimes beeping furiously and demanding a floppy disk, even though there is no floppy drive installed. If I'm turning it on after it has been turned off for a while (over an hour) it gets past the stage where it asks for a floppy drive, but instead halts at a black screen with a grey loading bar. Also, it doesn't seem to recognize the optical drives.

A fairly important factor is that any changes in the BIOS I make are not saved ( it goes back to default after restart). When I saw this, I replaced the MB's battery, but that had no effect.

Now, instead of trying to fix the faulty component the owner wants to simply replace it. I came to the conclusion that the motherboard has gone rogue, and needs replacement. But, before I go out and make any purchases I wanted to ask the wise folk here if my diagnosis is correct. I hope I've given enough information about the symptoms.

Anywhoo, thanks everyone

Preferred Solution: Process of elimination regarding hardware error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,To cut a long story short, my PC one day just started sometimes staying black on boot up / coming on with DOS error messages (maybe from me having to power down so much when the screen was just blank). It always sounds like it is booting ok (except no bleeps), and it is not a monitor problem or anything.I have since managed (with help from these forums :-) to put my hard disk into another machine and retreive my data, so now I am just trying to figure what went wrong with my machine.I think someone on a forum said that it sounded like the heatsync and now that I know what that is, it appears to have quite a bit of dust on the fan blades. (did I once hear this might indicate that it is indeed the broken part?)Basically, I am trying to find out which part of my machine I need to replace. (If any?)Many thanks for any replies posted!

Answer:Process of Elimination

First... What kind of DOS messages are these? Second... Have you at least checked the heat sink to see if it is the problem?[glb]Flame[/glb]

Hi all,
I want to keep this short but i need some advice as to where and how i can find out what the problem is with my PC
Only a few days ago whenever i do anything demanding (i.e. rendering with a 3D program or even virus scanning with Norton 360) my pc just shuts down unexpectedly !
General internet viewing and video/music playing etc it fine so i am guessing its a cpu thing ?
i did a little googling and i have since ran memtest and a program called Prime64 to which i left running 24/7 for 2 days on torture test and pc was fine ?
I am on W7 64 all upto date etc so i need to know how to test things further, i.e PSU, CPU, Graphics or what ever else is needed.
I am a little green with the jargon so if any help is offered please be basic with me lol
Thanks in advance for any input, it will be greatly appreciated.
Kindest regards,

Answer:Process elimination

Truthfully, there's probably not much you can change that will make a realistic effect.

Open Task Manager, select the cpu usage graph, and just sit back and watch. Unless your system is very unusual, you'll notice that your CPU usage is only a couple of percent at most. That's the savings you'll realize at a maximum...

Hi. I'm looking to compile a list of ways to basically troubleshoot hard drives, monitors, cdroms, floppy disks, etc., using the approach - process of elimination. Does anyone have any proven paths they use for doing this or can suggest some websites to visit? I'm trying to understand what help desk positions use to consistantly troubleshoot hardware over the phone.

All my MP3 vanished from an external hard-drive, IE history isn't correct plus I'm having major bsod issues but I'm suspecting that's driver related.

my spare pc which was upgraded by local 'Specialist' a couple of years ago has never been reliable since , being prone to freezing and 'sudden blank monitor syndrome' .They originally put in new m/board,cpu (duron 1300mhz) and memory (this was the upgrade).Under their warranty they changed the memory stick and I paid for an additional one, giving 256mb.It kept going back and back but of course never froze or crashed when they had it so i gave up on them and embarked on a mission to solve the mystery myself.
First I changed the floppy drive.
Then the cpu fan
Then the power supply
Then put in more case fans
Tried running for a week on one memory stick only
Tried running on the other memory stick
Recently its got to be unusable so i said 'right thats it; reinstall Windows' -thinking it must be corrupt OS.But on trying to format the hard drive its even freezing up in the BIOS.Ive managed to get Windows XP to start loading but at various points of the install procedure it crashes really suddenly

I'm left thinking; it must be a bad m/board!

New dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and al... I'm running a dual boot system with XP as my primary and Vista as my secondary OS. Both OS's are on the same drive but on seperate partitions.
So my pc was working fine yesterday. I boot into XP today after an abnormally long boot time of about 4 minutes, to find that one core of my cpu is running at 100% most of the time. The other core is fine. I ran process explorer and it turns out the problem is with the Hardware Interrupt which is constantly using 25-50% (1 entire core out of 2). There is also constant hard drive thrashing which appears to be the cause of the abnormal cpu usage. I assumed it was a hard drive failure so I rebooted into Vista and the problem is gone. Working perfectly. The XP partition reads and writes at normal speed as i tested with some large files and there are no problems. I reboot into XP and again a long boot time with the same cpu usage problem.

I've updated anti-virus, as-aware, spybot, windows defender etc and my system is clean. So i'm now stumped as to what is causing the issue. I could easily reformat, but i'd rather not.

Any ideas?

Yesterday my computer started acting up giving me the message "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. ". This happens when I try and install a program or copy a file over itself. I have tried the following measures:1: System Restore (multiple dates)2. avast! full system anti-virus scan3. Windows Defender full system spyware scan4. Webroot Spy Sweeper full system scan5. Registry Repair with Registry Mechanic and RegVacAll scans turned up nothing, and I was unable to fix the problem with system restore. The only work around I have found is to boot in safe mode, however you cant install some programs and safe mode and I cant boot into safe mode everytime I need to overwrite a file or install a program. Hey y'all, I recently received my computer, a Dell Studio 16 with an Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz processor in it, and found the processor is worry-some...

While running World Community Grid, a program to donate your excess processor time to research cancer treatments, genome decoding, and the like, and having set it to max out my processor while I wasn't using my computer, I placed my computer in a location not-so-great for the fan intake, and it overheated (to the trip switch of the processor), 206 degrees F, (wow, just noticed that it was almost literally boiling...), and shut down my computer safely.

Luckily, there was no damage. The processor is rated to 212 degrees, but I don't want to test it.

Is there any process or whatnot that I can use so that when my hardware monitor (CPUID) registers a temperature over a given value (probably about 190 degrees F), the process automatically ends a different given process? (In this case, one or more of the World Community Grid processes.)

If not, how would I go about writing something to do that? I would want it to either be a program than monitored the temperature itself, or one that took an output from CPUID, and deleted the processes accordingly. I would want the program/process to constantly monitor my computer, checking my system at least every 5 seconds.

Anyways, that's my question, if it's in the wrong forum, whoever can, please move it I'm new to this forum and don't want to cause any problems

I noticed through looking into the processes running on the computer that there is too much activity in the "Hardware interrupts" which slows down the computer significantly. I didnt add any new hardware recently so I dont know where did that activity come from. How do I trouble shoot that?

My money would be on your network card driver. But it could be any of your drivers; check that they are all up-to-date.

Hi -
As it probably says on the little box in the corner I'm pretty much of a beginner. I can follow instructions, though. As I was looking to resolve a problem which I posted some time yesterday (if I get no responses I'll post it tomorrow again - or point new people to it) I may have stumbled across a bigger problem. I was reading about Process Explorer and gave it a try. Sure enough, the 2nd entry that it came up with was Hardware Interrupt. I have no other information except that it was on the second line under System Idle Process. It showed nothing else under any columns. I know I need to get rid of it. Can someone help? Please keep in mind that you have to give me relatively simple direction. Computer isn't even my second language.

Answer:Process Exploerer found a Hardware Interrupt

Why do you consider this a problem? That is a normal entry there.

Even though I'm upgrading hardware/OS soon, I'd like to get this figured out. My CPU is always at 30-100% consumption, even though system idle process is 70-99% most of the time. I just reformatted today.
Here is my system:

Chipset: Intel 915G
Processor: P4, 3.4ghz
RAM: 1.5 GB (dont know what type)
Video: Radeon 4850
Sound: integrated soundmax and sb audigy sound card

I uninstalled all the video and audio drivers, disabled the sound card in device manager, rebooted, and something was still keeping the CPU busy.
the temp of the video card is at a constant 80-90C, so the whole box is noisy. I only have 2 case fans, excluding the power supply's.

how should i get to the root of this?

Operating a wired Ethernet LAN that connects this Windows-10 computer with other Windows-8.1, Windows-7 and Linux computers, I am constantly frustrated by demands for user IDs and passwords when attempting to access one machine from another. Such security on a local wired network is absolutely unnecessary and very exasperating.

I'm reduced to transferring files via flash drives. I'd like to obtain file system display and file transfer among these computers totally without reference to passwords. Is it possible to do this? Can someone recommend documentation? Is there an app available that uses the TCP/IP system software independent of Microsoft's security concerns?

Using Windows XP, Google chrome, MSE, Malwarebytes anti-malware, and spybot search and destroy.
I use MSE and noticed it was red, and it said it needed to be restarted. I attempted to start it, and got a window saying...
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item."
I've since tried to fire up my spybot S+D, Malwarebytes, and Hijack this, and all three started to open, but then got nowhere. when I went to start them up again, I got the same msg as the MSE. I've tried to uninstall, and re-install MSE, but it wouldn't let me finish the installation.
Since this started happening, IE occasionally pops up to attempt to load something. I deny everything it comes up with because I don't even use IE.

I have switched from Outlook to Windows Live Mail recently and I've noticed that under 'Junk' in one of the menus it says - 'add sender to blocked sender's list' and 'add sender's domain to blocked sender's list'. You can't select both as the action happens as soon as you click either one - but what is the difference?

Answer:Junk Email Elimination

I've just found this:
*Block a Sender in Windows Live Mail
To add a sender to your list of blocked senders in Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail:
Highlight a message from the undesired sender in the message list.
Make sure the Home ribbon is active.
Click the down arrow beneath Junk in the Home ribbon.
Select Add sender to blocked sender list from the menu.
Select Add sender's domain to blocked sender list from the menu to block messages not only from this sender but from all addresses at the same domain (what follows the '@' sign).*
Hope this helps explain it?

My question is: How can she get her wireless back up and running without the system restore.

My wife contracted a Virus on her laptop shortly after installing her Windows updates for Win XP professional Sp3. I manages to track the Virus down and disable the thing to get the computer operational again, however after successfully disabling the thing we lost all wireless communication and I was forced to sysrest to regain the wireless communication. Something in disabling the Virus caused the computer to firewall all wireless connections. I pored through the firewall settings and could not for the life of me find any way to remove the firewall on the wireless communications and thus resorted to the sys rest.

Today I am learning this is not isolated, seems a few people are encountering a sudden virus issue that is crippling their computer use. One friend who has regained some of her computer functions tells me it's the same virus. She too is operating a laptop running Win XP Home Edition SP3. However she has no restore points so she is unable to just run a system restore like I did.

This thing blew right through both my wife's Avast and a friends AVG with out so much as a yellow flag. It then proceeded to tell the user that such and such file is infected and can not run such and such program for everything and demanded that they download and purchases some BS antivirus software.

Answer:Virus Firewalled wireless upon elimination

You need to run a good antivirus program, free is ok, in regular mode and safe mode. Then get and run anti-spyware program. I like free Superantispyware and the free Ad-aware. I have XP Pro SP3 on 2 laptops with no problems. After running these post back here. If you are infected read the notes at the beginning above, about infected pc's.

My home computer has been infected with various viruses and by following the posts at this site I have been able to eliminate them. Who knew what a wonderful resource existed? But I still had a Packager/Calc virus. I ran CWShredder, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D and Symantec AV and made the necessary deletions. I then ran HiJackThis. I am almost there, I hope, and need to have my log reviewed to delete the correct items. Here is my log:

Hi Everyone
I recently did a System Restore on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system to correct a strange problem I was having with IE. It seems to have solved the problem, but now Process Explorer is displaying the messages in the screen shot below, and I'm not sure why. The computer is functioning fine, in fact, since the System Restore it is running like new. Is this something I need to worry about? The computer is a pretty old Dell Optiplex 760 with a 3.0GHz CoreII Duo CPU, a 140GB harddrive, with integrated graphics. I'm not sure what other info might be pertinent

Answer:"Error opening process" message in Process Explorer

Sorry everyone, I found the answer in another post. Ran Process Explorer as Admin, and the messages disappeared. Thanks for being here

I got a java exploit virus/trojan recently - either through a fake update or hitting the "x" on one of those annoying pop-ups.

Anyway, I've run Trend Micro & Security Essentials and both tell me they've found the problem & have cleaned it... daily.

Meaning, there is something hiding which those programs cannot find.

I found a couple of suspicious entries in "hkey_current_user software microsoft windows currentversion internet settings\zonemap\domains" - and want to be sure they're configured corrrectly - or whether I should delete them.

The sites listed are ones I plugged into the restricted cookies section under IE - but they are not all of the sites listed in IE.

The registry DWord value is "4" (0x00000004 (4)), but I am not certain that means "block" or not - and, I am not sure why only these 5 sites show up in the 'Domains' registry, and not all of the sites on my IE restrictions page (suspicious).

Answer:Virus / Trojan elimination... Win 7 64 - registry questions

Take the HDD out and scan it on another PC. Once it's cleaned off all it can find then put the HDD back in, boot up and run Combofix on it to clean up the last bits and any app/Registry changes.

Nigh on impossible to clean virus/trojans off a running PC once infected. You dont get everything.

I was SO fed up with the volume on screen interface, mostly durin full screen movie watching, games, anytime it's an annoyance!!! Well, its very easy to finish it off! 1) Start->Run2) write: msconfig Press Enter3) In msconfig go to Start-up or whatever its called in your language4) Disable (un-check) the On Screen Display (by Lenovo) line. Enjoy!!! PD: my previous HP notebook had a similar, yet different interface: just a Direct X volume bar showing up in the center of the screen for 2 seconds. Not interrupting any full screen apps... Way to go

I eliminated the rcommended stuff, and my wireless setup stopped working. I restored the files from the Spyware quarantine section, but the wireless still won't work. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the Belkin Setup Utility.Help!Josh

Sounds like a TCP/IP and Winsock restore is required . Open a command prompt ( start/run and type in CMD , and press enter )In the command box type in ...netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt , then press enter , then type in ...netsh winsock reset catalog , and press enter again . You will be asked to reboot , so type in exit , press enter , then type it in again and press enter , that will close the command prompt , then reboot and see if that has helped . Ashley

Hey all. I'm having trouble with my "bleeping" computer. I followed exactly the instructions posted by Grinler to remove the Home Search Assistant from my PC with XP Pro. Apparently I have a "heartier" version on my PC. Just got infected today (explained later). Behaviorally, seems I have the classic Home Search Assistant start page, the "Only the best" popups, and I get the "search extender" popups on Google. My scenario is:1. I have the classic R1/R0 entries with the problem 5-letter dlls being (currently) tshhn.dll (a bunch of entries for browser page loading) and javazu.dll which is the lone 02 entry. Their names change every time I delete the virus's files2. The culprit XP service is "Network Security Service" with the source executable being c:\windows\ntiy.exe. The name of this virus file never changes. 3. My problem startup executable is called c:\windows\system32\msav.exe (oddly has the same name as former windows virus scanner). Its name never changes. My problems are when the instructions say to manually delete the culprit files:1. The HSA removal instructions say to locate the source virus programs (ntiy and msav.exe), but they are not shown in their directories, and do not show up in searches.2. The .dlls mentioned above are nowhere to be found either.3. HOWEVER, msav.exe and ntiy.exe DO show up in searches in the Windows Prefetch folder as files: and NTIY.EXE-062CE5BB... Read more

hello to your great community!

for the past days I was dealing with a malware that included a google redirect virus and a fake privacy protection program.

following the general instructions posted in your forums, I had quite a success, using tdsskiller, mbam, rkill and combofix with great caution of course.

after removing those threats, when booting windows the firewall somehow seems to be failing. the o/s boots ok, wifi seems to be connected properly, though just moments after loading windows a message pops out telling me that firewall is off and avg is out of date.

I searched online for similar cases and solutions, but winsockfix, xptcprep, microsoftfixit50102 and other suggested methods don't seem to be working. additionally, when trying to start the service manually, still nothing happens except warnings.

fyi, I use an eeepc 904HD with dual boot(grub) eeebuntu8.04 and winXPsp3.

It would be really important for me to avoid formatting and clean installing the xp partition, as I am in the middle of writing my master thesis and something like this would be quite confusing.
Any ideas, people?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't trust myself to write in depth, as my anger grows with the removal of yet more features that set ThinkPads apart from the competition. Lenovo's design department is driving us diehard users to scorn the reliable series of tools we long recommended for purchasing in the tens to thousands. What's left to set ThinkPads apart? Why should we be loyal to a brand that isn't loyal to us? ThinkLight: useful for far more than keyboard illumination, such as book reading, and a long time key differentiatorTrackPoint: hard buttons are superior, every reviewer and user comments I've read agreevendor lock-in to Lenovo hardware: you have removed keys that power users use -- the dedicated customer base for ThinkPads and your most fervent supporters

I posted this earlier but reposted this and erased the old thread because I have more information now and have narrowed down the problem (I hope).This problem just happened yesterday after I had to manually shut down (used power button) my computer after it froze. Now when I try to load up IE, it "halfway" opens up (you can see parts of the interface) and just freezes. I thought maybe it was an IE problem, but if I try to load up Firefox (even without loading up IE first), nothing happens -- it won't load. The only way I did figure out to surf the net is to load up "My Computer" and enter a web address from there manually. But even when I do that, if I click on any link that opens up a new window, IE will try loading that new window up which freezes. Right after this happened, I get a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error" (still do every now and then. I also d/l'd the "patch" for this from Microsoft's website to no avail) which says something about svchost.exe and some other exe's. My dad recently got me a new hard drive which unfortunately crashed. I put my old hard drive back in and immediately received the AXWIN Frame Window: svchost.exe - Application Error. Under the title it says: the instruction at "0x02baf7a0" referenced memory at "0x02baf7a0". The memory could not be "written". I'm having a problem with my sister in law's computer. Originally, she had that annoying XP 2008 virus/spyware, which I think I managed to get rid of with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and System Mechanic 7. Now I have a new problem. After receiving a recent download from microsoft, upon restarting, I get the blue screen of death with this message;

STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage since I'm not trained for this. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one. I have no windows CD. The computer is a Dell, and it's running Windows XP service pack 2 with Explorer 6. Heeeeeelp! Other than the F keys, I can't get anywhere with this computer.

One of the chief complains about Windows 7 was how much space an installation required. Microsoft notes that a 32-bit installation needs at least 16GB of storage while the 64-bit variant commands 20GB. While not a massive amount of space...

I like it! It's astounding how quickly storage space goes by when using an SSD. I upgraded to 120GB after red-lining my old 60GB SSD, and am upgrading to a 240GB SSD since I red-lined my current drive. Every little bit counts.

Answer:A corrected hardware error has occurred, Generic Cache Hierarchy Error

Please provide this information:

Although you haven't mentioned any BSOD's, the info will provide us with some details so we can try to figure this out.

In general, a machine check is related to an error that's recognized by your CPU and reported to Windows. There's not usually much information in the error reports so we have to fiddle around trying to figure it out.

Most often these are either hardware problems (something's busted) or compatibility issues (either software or hardware).

I took apart my computer so I could build my new one, but the new motherboard was bad. I put my old computer back together and I get a 02b0: Diskette A error. I am not 100% sure the pci devices are in the same slots as they where before and I am not sure if I have HD, CDR, DVD, and TapeBack plug back in the same order I had them. Does anybody know what this error message means??? I need help asap. Below is a list of some basic info

Windows 2000 on Gateway G6-450 PII w/ 256 ram, 16.8 hd, 20gb tape back up, DVD player, CD-RW, 56k modem, lan card, scsi card, voodoo 3, sb512, and external zip. Email me directly if you have any good ideas. I am using my laptop that is luckily running win2000 with no problems but need the computer us asap.

Answer:{Moved to Hardware Forum} - Boot Error - 02b0 Diskette error

Sounds to me like you didn't plug the floppy drive back in correctly. If the cable is backwards the drive won't work for instance.

Is the tape drive IDE or is it on the floppy controller too?

I have Lenevo T450 Laptop - Intel Core i5-5200 CPU @ 2.20 GHz, with 8 GB RAM and I have been getting BSOD often. Additional configuration are given below:

Motherboard: ACPI\PNP0C02

I have already ran Windows Memory Diagnostics and no issues have been detected.

I have ran CHKDSK and no hard disk issues have been found.

The BIOS configuration is default and no overclocking or changes in configuration are made.

I have used the BlueScreenView software as well to analyze the reasons and the output along with the Dump File & System Configuration (SYSDATA) can be accessed at:

dump files

I have looked up various forums for HAL.DLL related issues, I have updated all drivers, Windows 7 is upto date.

My HAL.DLL was last updated on 11/20/2010 - 10:24 PM with file version : 6.1.7601.17514

Please advise what could be an issue here?

My laptop (HP G42) crashes with a blue screen error 0x00000116. I have tried reinstalling the display driver and also reset the laptop to factory condition, but with no luck.

I am unable to figure out if this is a software issue or a hardware issue. How do I figure that out ? Below are links to 2 things

1. System and Application log files -

2. Dump files of the last 3 crashes along with details from "Bluescreenview" -

Hope this will help diagnose the issue. Look forward to hearing from anyone who can guide me

A few days ago I got a random BSOD with the 0x0..1E stop error. Now my computer will rarely boot and when it does it still randomly gets the same BSOD. I once got a 1D stop error but its mostly 1E that keeps happening. I run Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and this time I used a Windows DVD to start up my computer. One time and only one I got the error message (while booting the computer) "BOOTIMGR corrupt, system couldnt boot" or something like that. I restarted my computer after I saw that and it was gone. I've attached two ZIP files of two different .dmp files that were created today with about 15-20 minutes in between them. Is there something wrong with my bios? If not, what could it be?

Thank you for any support, greatly appreciated

Answer:Random BSOD stop error 0x0000001E, hardware error?

Also maybe worth noting that I had not updated drivers in a while, right after posting this I updated my monitor's drivers. The rest were up to date.

From day 1 my computer crashes to blue screens with various messages, such as Memory Management, System Service Exception, Kernel Data Inpage Error, IRQL not less or equal, and a few others that I can't remember anymore, but recently more frequent is the one saying "the system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error".
I have only a few programs installed on this computer, and I mainly use it with Photoshop, therefore most of the crashes occur while I use Photoshop. But some also occur when I do absolutely nothing, or I leave the computer with the desktop showing, and I go to the kitchen (for example), or, when I transfer files from an external HD to a flash drive, etc, so I can't connect a particular program to a particular error message.

I restored the computer a few times to factory defaults.
Windows is up to date.
I use Norton Security Suite.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I reached the end of my powers and patience.

Answer:Error: 0x00000124 - System encountered an uncorrectable hardware error

Welcome to SF mariad .

You have quite a variety of BugCheck Codes, but the main concern at the moment
are the 0x124 bugchecks.
Those are usually a hardware issue, in your case it points to the PCI/PCI-e ports do you have
Are there other expansion cards installed apart from the GPU?
Is your GTX 560 Ti overclocked?
Are you monitoring the temperatures?
Have you tired a different pair of PCI power connectors to run to the card?
Have you tired the second PCI-e slot?
Have you tried reseating the GPU making sure it is firmly in place?

What is the make, model and age of your PSU?
Fill out this form and post back the result:
Power Supply Calculator

Test for thermals and stability:
Download HWinfo and post a Screenshot of the sensors window, one at idle and another while putting load on the PC using Prime95 for the CPU side and Furmark for the GPU.Before running Prime95 make sure to enable Round-off checking (see 1st post under the tutorial).

It is not mandatory to run both tests simultaneously, although possible as long as the temperatures are under constant monitoring.

As part my , I am attempting to use . While running MGTools I get a popup that says:

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=0x4c0 (1216), Thread id=0x358 (856).

Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.Click to expand...

However, if I hit Cancel, MGTools continues without any further problems.

This error occurs when the MGTools window says "Running processdll.exe to find loaded DLLs". The MGtools thread has a similar error message (Error Message Type 4) and says I should install the .NET framework.

So I downloaded a .NET installation file from here:

However when I ran it, the only options were repair or uninstall, so I apparently already had it. I chose the repair option, then rebooted and ran MGtools again, but received the same error.

MGtools in the command prompt did keep running despite the popup though, so I'm not sure if this is an error I should worry about.

So did I download the right .NET framework? Is the process.dll an error I should worry about, or just ignore, as MGTools is able to finish anyway?

Answer:MGTools error - process.dll error

You can ignore it. It's 1 log of many that MGtools creates. And there are other tools to find out which .DLLs are loaded into Processes if it becomes an issue.

Which version of .NET Framework did you download? I think it will work with version 3.5 and/or version 4.0.

Most often she will get the message "Host Process for Windows Service stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application of stop working correctly. This happens fairly frequently and seemingly randomly but not often enough to reliably troubleshoot.

Answer:error creating process

Before you get too involved with changing any paths or settings, make sure that you don't already have DirectX9c.

Click Start > Run > type dxdiag > press enter. On the first tab the bottom line will list your DirectX version. Don't forget that it's not just a matter of installing a driver or directx, your physical video card will also need to support these features.

I have never had or seen an error like this, so I will be as detailed as possible. About a week ago, I noticed my computer starting to slow down. I assumed it was some of the simple problems, so I cleaned out the dust, ran the defragmentor, and did a disk clean up. I also ran some extra scans with my BitDefender virus protection. Unfortunately this did little. The only thing that was peculiar about the search was a trojan found on the lsass.exe file which it was unable to remove.

I then checked the Task Manager and found multiple processes running. Most of these are cmd.exe, reg.exe, and svchost.exe; however, there are also other processes that are duplicated.

There is no error message or anything of that sort. My problem is that all of these open processes are slowing the computer and the task manager says that there is 100% pc usage at all times. I've looked around and can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.

I hope to be able to fix this without having to do a system restore or anything like that.

Thanks for any help I can get. :)

If you already have net framework 2 or 3.5 or both, the troubleshooting guide for Spinnerchief implies you need to uninstall them first. I don't believe it. You should use .net 3.5 Sp1 rather than 2 as it will be safer.
Also you should clear out your temp folders before installing either (and in any case).

I've been here for help before and the people here were wonderful and saved my pc. Now I have a new problem. Last night I opened a pdf and read it. Not very long after that McAfee started having problems. So, I uninstalled it and installed Norton. I did a scan with that and Malware Bytes, but both said my pc is clean. I then discovered however that one of my other programs was not working and keeps giving me error messages and tells me it cannot debug. Here is a couple of examples of what it tells me:

process id= 0x3a4 (9320), thread id 0x2c8 (712)
process id= 0x848 (2120), thread id 0x908 (2312)

The program that isn't working is not important. I can live without it. I just want to make sure there isnt' something on my machine that shouldn't be. Also there are times where my screen freezes for a while, but after a bit it begins to function properly again. My load time when I turn on my computer has also increased, but that may be due to Norton.

Is this a virus? Thank you very much to anyone who is able to help me. Here is my HJT log:

Windows cannot access the file C:\Windows\Prefetch\AgAppLaunch.db for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with . . .the disk that the file is stored on . .

SysMain & AgAppLaunch.db are related to SuperFetch.

0xc0000006 = STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR = I/O error occurred

Your hard drive may be failing.

- Run chkdsk /r

My parents have a HP Compaq Desktop with windows XP oem OS, i recentely installed a free trail of norton antivirus on it for them. shortly after when they switched the coputer on the following error message appeared. "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll.

I tried the following to recitfy:
1. restarted the computer.
2. tried to do a repair with the win xp disc - it got as far as loading the windows set up screens then a blue screen appeared and gave the following error message:

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

I am trying to re install 8.0 using the option to re install all programs to Factory Settings.
Downloads 99 programs and when it tries to do the updates it fails and then starts the reverting back to original programs. This seems never to finish.
I had done an Image backup so that I could go back to it in case of a failure.
I did not do the option to wipe the disk and then install to factory.
I also could not get my machine to use the Recovery DVD's. But did use the screens that ask you questions about recovery.
I did the recovery twice and it failed both times and never did get back to the first install.
since there seems to be no reason for the failure in the 99 updates I am at a loss of whether I should try again and wipe the disk clean for C:/

Answer:Error during updating process.

Why would you go back to 8.0 from 8.1! If you are using the recovery partition in the computer to restore, chances are that when updating to 8.1 screwed up your recovery partition. If you are trying to use the recovery DVDs be sure to change the boot up sequence in the bios for the DVDs to boot up first.

As to the 99 updates, do them in batches to find which one is causing a problem, maybe 5 at a time.

OK about 2 months ago I ordered my system from Cyberpower PC and it was shipped a week later.

Set it all up, formatted Windows XP Home Edition and got it running. Shortly there after, I started blue screening and it seemed RAM related, so I swapped the sticks and it seemed I would only BSOD with one of the sticks, so I called the company, shipped it back, and got a new stick.

Plugged it in, and the comp ran great for a few days. Then I started to BSOD again with the error message of IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL and then 0x0000000A (0x0000F78A, 0x0000002, 0x0000001, 0x806E4A8F), and this particular error would only occur while I was playing World of Warcraft. So first I pulled the new stick of RAM and tried playing... and everything went fine for a day, and then I BSOD'd again, same error, swapped RAM and tried again. And yet again, the same error.

Later, I BSOD'd while outside of WoW (Which was new) with the error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA followed by the file name MFEAVK.sys 0x0000008 - BA637FC5 base at BA630000, Datestamp 45241FE2. Then when I tried to reboot, it crashed before I could get to my desktop, with the same above error, but with the file win32k.sys instead of MFEAVFK.sys.

So I've been running a few tests and I updated all my drivers, including chipsets, and made sure my hardware was all installed properly, nothing seems wrong, yet I am still crashing while in WoW and I believe it is only a matter of time before I BSOD while outside of WoW.

Answer:Win32 Process Error

The fact these programs are running from the temp directory makes them sound like a virus. Please try the online scan below. It would also be a good idea to scan for spyware.

Filled out on-line form, pdf format. Form has submit button which I cued. Error message "Error occurred during submission process. Cannot process content of type text/html."

If I read this, the form could not be sent due to whatever type/text...means.
That makes no sense to me at all. They supply the form in the format it is in, set it up so I can transmit it electronically, and then I get an error message it cannot be sent in that format??

Answer:submission process error

It may be a temporary server error, or it may be a general error how that form was set up.

Does that site has a contact / support address where you could ask for directions?

What are the best softwares/utilities as well as techniques for identifying viruses and spywares and manually removing them, especially when they have taken control of the Windows Registry and you simply cannot delete the files in Windows/Dos.

I am also looking for a program that can automatically refresh Windows XP Special Pack II and Special Pack III.

Thank you in advance,

Answer:Best Softwares for identification/elimination of virus "manually"

Nicholas -

These are basic steps that work in most cases.

1. From another computer, download Firefox and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware(free/trial version) onto a USB key if it is not already installed on the infected computer.
2. Boot the infected computer into Safe Mode with Networking by turning it on and tapping F8, then selecting the corresponding menu item.
3. Install MalwareBytes. Allow it to update during the process.
4. Perform a Quick Scan. Once the scan is complete, it will allow you to remove the infected items.
