Hi, I recently bought a 22" LG Flatron Monitor and a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop and have a flicker happening on the LG monitor whenever the laptop is plugged into an outlet. The flicker immediately goes away when the laptop is running off of battery power. The resolution is on the native 1920x1080 and refresh rate is 60Hz (can't change it). I have had this problem before with a HP laptop and BenQ monitor. The problem only happens to me at work (not at home), so I believe that is has to do with electrical noise on the circuit at this particular location. Anyone know of ways to get rid of or filter this noise to eliminate the flicker?
Thanks
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
What way do you use to change your refresh rate?

If you plug the adapter into the wall before you plug it into the computer, you won't have to worry about the sparks.

14 more repliesHello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7568 laptop that is less than a week old. I also purchased a Dell HDMI to VGA adapter so that I can use an external monitor with a VGA input as a 2nd screen.
Whenever I connect to the external monitor my laptop screen, not my external monitor screen, flickers a couple of times a minute. I have checked all the connections of the adapter and VGA port and they seem fine. It appears there is a problem that is encountered when I plug in the external monitor that causes the laptop screen to flicker occasionally.
If anyone has any suggestions to fix this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
monitor quit working, is there a fuse? Should monitor work if plugged into an outlet but not computer?
"Should monitor work if plugged into an outlet but not computer?"There should be a message on the screen that says "no signal" which indicates the monitor is OK but it's not receiving any input from a video card.
2 more repliesI have a Dell Latitude E6410 running Win 7 Professional (64-bit). I have it connected to an external monitor. Whether I choose "projector" or the option to show on both screens, the monitor on the laptop will flicker. Here's more specific information that may be helpful:
The laptop and a desktop are both connected to a KVM switch. I set the laptop to "projector" mode so that it will, of course, project on to the main monitor. When I am accessing the laptop via the KVM switch, I see its display on the main monitor just fine. However, if I switch to the desktop, the laptop screen will intermittently come on and off. This happens over and over. That is what I describe as the "flickering." It's very annoying as I work from home and each time the laptop screen goes off and on, I hear a beep in my headset.
The laptop uses Intel HD graphics. The driver date is 01/30/2013 and version is 8.15.10.2993. The laptop resolution is set to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60. Windows does not find a newer version of the graphics driver when doing a search. The laptop will also give this message when flickering:
Optimal Resolution Notification
This is not the optimal display resolution for the primary display device. The optimal resolution is 1280 x 800. Click this notification for more information.
Keep in mind this ONLY happens when the laptop is NOT being accessed on the main monitor on the KVM switch. If it is, its screen does NOT flicker.... Read more
After connecting to the projector, change the resolution to 1024*768

Are you using the same cable when you tested w/ 4 monitors? Something similar happened to me a while back and it was due to a bent pin. I was able to straighten it and fixed the problem.
Hello all,
I have a question about my laptop (Dell Latitude 7480). My laptop randomly freezes after starting the laptop. It takes around 1-5 minutes to freeze, and I can't do anything about it. After a while, I found out that if I'm not plugging the laptop to an external monitor through the HDMI cable, it will cause this happen, but if i plugged it in, it works perfectly fine.
Has anyone facing this issues and fixed it in the past?. This issue is really annoyed me very much because I cannot work without an external monitor.
My guess is that something happened with my graphic card? Do I need to change the laptop or is there any other way to fix it?
Thank you very much for your answer, very appreciated.
Hi jarukit.p,
Thanks for posting.
Apologies that your system is not working as you expected. From the description you posted, the issue could be the LCD panel. If the system is working with an external monitor, then the GPU is not usually suspected as being faulty.
Have you run a systems diagnostics test? You can do this by pressing F12 at startup or using Support Assist. Run the diagnostics, make a note of any error messages, then contact Tech Support for further troubleshooting and possible resolution. You can contact Tech Support at 1-800-624-9896 or 1-800-288-4410, or you can initiate a chat session http://dell.to/2v4snVm
I just received the T450s from my company. It has Windows 7 installed. When I connect the VGA cable to the HP LA2306x monitor, the computer does not recognize the connection. The Control Panel =>Display screen shows the one laptop screen. I donwloaded the drivers for the LA2306x from the HP website. This did not help. My company's tech support is researching the issue, without luck at this moment. I do not have a docking station and do not want one. I consult and I need to have this latptop able to connect to any external monitor at my client's office. The HP LA2306x connected to my client's T440 and my old T410 without issue. I bought an ACER when the T410 died to use until I received the T450s and the monitor connects automatically when I plug the cable into the HDMI port. The company issued the T450s to other consultants who have not had an issue connecting to the external monitors. Any advice on connecting the external monitor? Appreciate your help. Regards, Frank

More repliesI'm having a bad problem this time...I'm getting constant "Low Battery" messages when this laptop isn't plugged into the wall. I see 3% battery in the gauge when it's not plugged into the wall, but oddly, when it's plugged into the wall, it's at full battery. Something fishy is going on here, this never happened on my Compaq.
Maybe this will help you.

Hi,
I've got a small car vacuum that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter that I would like to use in my house. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as an adaptor for car outlet/lighter plugins to be plugged into wall current?

I've had a computer plugged into an Ethernet port for a few years, but suddenly it seems to have stopped working. I've tried plugging another computer into the port, and it cannot connect either, so I know it's not the computer, and other ports in the house also work. My question is, can I fix it, and if so, how?
Thanks in advance
Welcome to the Seven Forums.
Unscrew the cover plate and see if there are any obvious lose wires. It is kind of hard to answer the question of "can you fix it" without knowing how easy/hard it is to get to the wiring. If you end up needed to pull a new cable and you have very little crawl space above the room, then you might want a pro to handle the job for you.
External out using VGA and my Acer AL2216W shows flickering especially when there's movement on the screen (animation/video running). By flickering I mean thin lines running across the screen. Not thick enough to be a hindrance but very noticeable especially in videos.I originally thought it was the VGA out's fault. Turns out this only happens when I'm plugged into the AC. When I'm running off the battery there's no flicker. This happens no matter which wall outlet I use or surge protector.Changing power adapters with my room mate's didn't help either (he has the same model). Seems it's the power unit inside the laptop?
*Where's that edit button*...The problem occurs on my room mate's Y410 as well.I'm guessing it's due to improper shielding inside the laptop.Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something that Lenovo guarantees an easy fix for if I shipped it in aka is Lenovo aware of this problem? Reason I ask is because this is my sole computer (no desktop). So I will be without a computer if I get this RMAed.
4 more repliesHi
We bought a lot of Latitude 5580's with the Universal Dock D6000. What happens when the user connects the default power adapter (the round one) AND the D6000 USB-C (power over USB) at the same time? Is the power of one source automatically shut down?
We have also the Latitude 5285 (tablet). When we connected the default adapter from the wall outlet (USB-C adapter) together with the USB-C from the D6000 docking, the docking ... melted. It is a dangerous situation when one of the power sources isn't shut down automatically.
I believe what's supposed to happen is that the system will start charging from the regular wall adapter, because there some systems require more than the D6000's maximum 60W power delivery anyway. But why are you connecting both at the same time? But why are you connecting both anyway? Just simulating various "clueless user" scenarios?
1 more replieshi,
Im having a problem when i connect my laptop with external display.
My laptop is HP tx2(12" display) with windows vista sp2 and my external display is an LCD tv of Onida(Xaria 22")
When i connect my laptop to the LCD tv, the connection is ok... display comes properly....resolution is also good...
but after some time of using it(either watching videos or even normal browsing) the display flickers and then gets diconnected(with the disconnection sound or tone) and automatically gets connected again.
sometimes after auto re-connection the resolution also gets changed....this is really annoying..
Iv used the help section... they asked me to increase the flicker rate to atleast 75 but my laptop has a max freq of 60hz only. iv also applied max resolution to the screen...but the same thing always happens again..
then i also connected the same lcd tv to my another laptop(hp dv6000, 15.4", vista sp2) and the same problem never comes. even the flicker rate of that laptop is max 60 hz. both have same resolutions also
iv tried all that i cud.... advise please.....
When I switch between my home and work docking stations, the external monitor flickers. I have tried what is recommended in this link:
www.dell.com/.../EN
But I don't have it plugged to the display port. Both monitors are connected via DVI. When I restart my computer there are no problems. Only when I come out of sleep mode when changing docks. The external monitors are different. Both dells. Video card driver is up to date. Bios is up to date. The video card is Intel HD graphics 520 (driver 20.19.15.4531). Display is Dell E2414H. The dock is PR02X F310C A03. I have changed the monitor settings from auto detect to DVI input. Also I disabled DDC/CI.
I believe this is a video card driver issue although it could be bios related.
Hi, I own a W510 updated with the latest lenovo drivers. The problem I have is that when I use an external monitor connected via the VGA port I see horizontal lines moving across the screen, which I can only describe as flicker. I've seen this with two 22" 16:9 monitors already - one Lenovo and one Packard Bell. With the Lenovo monitor I see that in the NVIDIA Control Center the refresh rate is set to 59 with options 60 and 75 available. With 75 the flicker is still there but not that apparent. I can't set to 60 because it automatically reverts to 59. If I however connect the same monitor via the DisplayPort to DVI connector there is no flicker and the refresh rate is set to 60. With a third Lenovo screen, which is I think 15 inch 4:3 I don't see any flicker. Do I have a defective VGA port? Is this a driver issue? Should I contact support?

When I connect my Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop with QHD display to an external monitor through the DA200 USB-C to HDMI connector the external monitors flicker constantly (laptop is fine-no flickering). Sometimes it works for like an hour then starts to flicker or longer so its not consistent. Below are the troubleshooting steps Dell has walked me through (including sending me a new DA200 part) to no avail:
- Dell has sent me a new DA200 USB C to HDMI part
- They have upgraded the Thunderbolt drivers and all other relevant drivers to latest ones (as of June 15 2016)
- I have tried on different monitors (5-6) and tried different HDMI cables.
Dell doesnt seem to know what to do now. THey have refunded my DA200 part purchase and told me to buy a separate HDMI to USB-C cable to test. If that fails it seems they will replace the motherboard. They say it could be an issue with the external monitors not being compatible with QHD, but this is not documented anywhere (they admit) and I havent heard anyone else having this problem on the internet and surprised every single person using this setup has QHD external monitors. This is an unworkable situation for me as I work in PC labs all day connected to external monitors.
Any advice?
I recently purchased an XPS 15 9550 with i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and GTX 960m dGPU that I have connected to a 27-inch QNIX qx2710 2560x1440p external monitor. I have this connected through a Cable Matters USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to DVI-D adapter and cable.
The monitor and everything seem to work fine at 60hz, except for every time I unplug, turn on, or restart the monitor/computer the first five or ten minutes of use is plagued with constant screen flickering and flashing. After ~five minutes the monitor seems to stabilize and will only rarely have a single screen flicker.
I have read other forum threads describing similar issues with different monitors/cable setups and that there is likely an issue between the wifi card and thunderbolt port. The common recommendation is to turn down the wifi output percent to 75%, however the Killer wifi card on this computer does not have an option under advanced settings to turn down the power output. Has anyone had any luck doing this on a recently purchased XPS 15 with the Killer wifi card?
The cables and adapters are new and the BIOS and all drivers are up to date. Other than the wifi issue, does anyone have suggestions or solutions to this screen flickering problem?

This isnt a complete solution but it helps... you can just drag your taskbar onto the external monitor screen.

5 more repliesI've been getting BSODs a few times a day when I'm not plugged into an external monitor. Sometimes I'll get an artifacted screen or just a random restart. I thought it might be an overheating issue so I took apart my computer and cleaned all the dust out. While it helped temperatures a little, it didn't solve any of the restarting problems. The max temperature range has been similar (around 64-67~ degrees C under load) but the min and average has been a little better. (47 and low to mid 50s respectively)
The main filenames that have come up in the BSODs have been
ntoskrnl.exeintelppm.sys
Things I've done
My problems started on 8, so I did a fresh reinstall of Windows, updated to 8.1 and reinstalled all the newest driversI kept having problems so I uninstalled the newest processor driver from Intel and used the one that HP suggested. If anything the BSODs have been more frequent.I've done the standard diagnostic tests in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tool without any errors although twice after my computer has been having rebooting fits it has frozen up before I even got to the tests.I've done Intel's Processor Diagnosis Tool a few times and have passed everything at load level 8. It says my temperature is 35 degrees C below maximum.
Things I haven't done
Memtest for any extended length of timeAnything y'all can come up with
I've attached the output the SF Diagnostic Tool is giving me.
Thanks for the help. Any ideas are really appreciated.

To start with.
In your dumpfiles bsod were a probably caused by hardware and memory exception.
So testing your memory with memtest Memory Diagnostics would be a good idea.
Hi there,
With the ac adapter plugged in, i get serious interferance on my external monitor (samsung Syncmaster 226bw). As soon as I remove the AC adapter it disappears.
The weird thing is my colleague here has the exact same setup in the office next door and experiences no problems at all. only difference is he is running linux whilst i am still on XP
I have tried different monitor cables, switched AC adapters with my colleague but to no avail.
Any suggestions or ideas you may have will be much appreciated.
Thanks
It doesn't matter wether you have installed Linux or Windows operating system.
Maybe you could try to use for your notebook, or monitor a ompletely single wall socket.
Another thing is, check if your colleague's notebook behaves as yours on your place connected to the monitor.
Hi, I notice that I get a BSOD whenever I turn on my computer with an external monitor attached. Also have the same experience when running the windows experience index with an external monitor. W530 with K1000 video card, fully updated bios and nvidia graphics drivers (and all other lenovo drivers). Also tried updating to latest video drivers from nvidia site, still same problem. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Suggestions?
We too are having issues with 3 W530s when connecting to any sort of external device, whether it is a monitor or projector, VGA, DVI or HDMI. We receive the nvlddmkm.sys blue screen upon connection of the device if the laptop is already running or shortly after login if we boot the machine up with the peripheral connected. We have updated BIOS, the nVidia driver, the Intel chipset driver and ran the computer in all display modes (generic, discrete and Optimus) and still get the error. Also noticed that when the Blue Screen occurs, there is increased fan speed on the exhaust and an acrid/ozone smell.
3 more repliesWhen I close the laptop lid, chrome slows down dramatically on my external monitor, but when it's open, it works fine. How do I fix this??
Dear Yfang109
Welcome in lenovo community
Please try the following steps one by one :-
1. Replace the monitor. It's expensive and pretty, so save that for a desperate last attempt.2. Replace the video cable. It's possible that the DVI cable is damaged internally, destroying shielding.3. Move equipment so that your computer is between the router and the monitor, taking the monitor out of the direct path between your computer and router.4. Change the channel on your router as far away from your current channel as you can. If you are on channel 1, go to 11. If you are on 11, go to 1. It might be just enough of a different frequency to no longer interfere.5. Plug the monitor into a different electrical outlet
Let us know
Thanks

If I plug my monitor in after the laptop starts, it works fine, I can extend desktop to the monitor. If I reboot with the monitor plugged in the laptop display resolution is reduced , messing up my icon layout. Anyone know how to change this behavior? I am assuming this is probably because it assumes I am in a docking station or something? Moderator note: Type added to subject line for clarity. Message Edited by Agotthelf on 07-05-2009 06:41 AM

6 more repliesHello, I would love to ask for some help!
I've recently purchased the newer Dell XPS 13 9360 Non-touch (not the 2 in 1) and am having some trouble with using an external monitor. The screen (on the external monitor) keeps on flickering and has a very unstable connection.
I've searched and found that apparently lowering the power output of the WIFI network adapter can fix this problem.
The problem is that the current XPS's wifi adapter doesn't allow the power output to be changed. The previous fixes were geared towards intel wifi adapters.
The general power settings for the computers doesn't show wifi card power controls.
I have updated all the drivers for the computer including the wireless adapter. Still the options doesn't change.
Has anyone found a way to get a stable external monitor to work with the Killer Wireless Adapter cards?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For what it's worth: For me (XPS 13 9360, QHD, i7, 16 GB, Killer WiFi), external screens are perfectly stable, even with wireless being on relatively high throughput load, albeit not high power (energy) load.
I am connecting both HDMI and DisplayPort displays, each with cheap native USB-C adapters (i.e. through Thunderbolt). I also have full success with a Dell DA200, through its built-in HDMI graphics adapter.
Hi, I've just bought a IdeaPad u310 and I'm having trouble with the Synaptics touchpad when I plug the computer to a power outlet. But, I I plug the computer to the power outlet, when keeping my finger in the touchpad, the pointer jumps, making extremely annoying to use. Does anybody else have the same problem?
Hi fernandojs,
Welcome to the community.
Your issue is concerned to improper functioning of the touchpad ,while plugging in the Power adapter.
In order to resolve this please re-install the touchpad driver from the below web link:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073560
Afterwards, restart your system and check whether the issue gets resolved

Hi cocoy,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Sounds like a HW paroblem but you could try these.
1. Make sure that the Power Option is on Highperformance on both Plugged in and in Battery.
2. Try using a generic driver, Open Conrol Panel / Program and features / Uninstall a program, Look for Synaptics or ELAN /Eigis driver and uninstall it.
Also Open Device Manager and Uninstall the sysnaptics / ELAN touhpad driver (If prompt with Rremove Driver software , Place a check on the box and Continue to uninstall).
Check the performance After those steps.
If still the same problem, I suggest you call technical support for a ssistance, Seems like a grounding issue when the AC is plug in. Could be the AC, Motherboard or the Touchpad HW itself.
Hope this helps
Cheers!

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
Hello, I've got an E520 here that doesn't seem to want to display anything on the built-in screen, unless I've hooked the device up to an external monitor. I've attempted the following: 1.) Windows Key + P to change the display. (No good)2.) Updated drivers. (No good)3.) Changed primary monitor. (No good)4.) Changed to Extended display, duplicate, single. (No good) I'm not quite sure what else to do. Any ideas?

Hi MrMcWhiskers,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Display on ThinkPad E520.
Please check if you are able to see Lenovo logo on built-in display when you switch ON the system.
Check booting the system to safe mode if you are able to seen the display on built-in screen.
Boot the system in normal mode connecting with external monitor and uninstall the graphic driver from Control panel ?Program & feature option and restart the system and check if the issue still persists.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi! Like most of you, I was eager to take the step early and try Windows 10 (knowing the risk of running into some problems on the way). Everything works very smoothly, and Win10 is really delightful. The only major problem I've faced is that when I plug an external monitor, every action (launching Firefox for example) takes ages and many apps "doesn't respond". I've downloaded and installed all the drivers for Win10 (included the one for the graphic card). Any idea what is happening or what I could try? Best,François
Hi. I am suffering the exact same thing. But i think i narrowed down the issue:When i am not using an external monitor - everything works nicely. When I am using an external monitor (and laptop set to "Extend" mode) while laptop screen is open - everything works nicely. When i am using an external monitor (and laptop set to "Extend" mode) while laptop screen is closed - everything becomes extremely slow and laggy. I wish Lenovo support would provide a solution asap.

After it hits that 50% threshold the wall outlet charger works, but takes a very long time to charge and my battery life seems lower. Any help?
Ima say your charger head needs to be replaced. Maybe a surge shorted something in there.
2 more repliesHi, this is the background story.
My first computer refused to turn on after the power went out one night. I bought a new P.S to fix it and it didn't seem to work.
So I bought a new computer with an expensive PowerStream 520 psu. Apparent the same thing happens, but with a twist. It turns on only after you unplug the cord from the wall and plug it back in. But after you shut it down again and turn it back on, the light goes on for 3 secs and the computer just turns off itself.
I'm not sure if it's CPU heating? doesn't seem like it. Or a bad PSU, but it's a brand new one.
Here is my comp specs:
AMD Opteron 165
DFI NF4 Motherboard.
OCZ POWER STREAM 520 PSU
This is a very frustrating situation and I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!
Are you using any type of power surge protector?
Have you tried any other power source ie; another part of house or building?
I have the L505 and my laptop will not turn on unless it is plugged into a wall. How do I fix this?

Could you provide a bit more information? - Exact model of your device? I cannot find any maintenance manuals for a Lenovo Thinkpad L505... (Or is it that old that it was still an "IBM ThinkPad"?) - When you turn it on while plugged into the wall and then unplug it, will it stay on? In other words, is it only the "turning on" that requires AC power, or running too? - What does your operating system (which one) report for the battery status? Fully charged? Or no battery detected? Or something else? - How old is the battery? Have you tried removing the battery and plugging it in again? - In case your notebook has a battery indicator LED somewhere, is it lit / blinking and yes in which color?
2 more repliesHas anyone here used these, or anything similar? I'm thinking about using them to set up my home network. It's either that or 802.11b wireless, and I'd prefer to stay away from wireless if I can.
Unfortunately, I don't personally know anyone who has any experience with them, and I'd like to get some end-user feedback before I run out and buy them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm trying to setup dual monitor for my lenovo T61P laptop. I want to use one external monitor which is connected to my Thinkpad docking station and the laptop lcd monitor. I'm using windows vista x64. Does any one else have it setup this way? When I connect the laptop to the docking station, only the external monitor displays data. I've tried going into desktop settings to extend my desktop but only one monitor is present. Please help. I've spent an entire two days playing with BIOS settings, searching forums....

This started working fine when I installed the video drivers below: Display (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M / Quadro FX 570M) driver for Windows Vista 64-bit - ThinkPadhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67939 It looks like I had installed the wrong video drivers (32-bit) previously. Now fn+F7 works fine and I am able to extend my desktop to mulple monitors (dual-monitor).
1 more repliesHey gals & guys, we're having a very weird problem here, with one of our laptops. We have an L560, running Windows 10, that exhibits some strange malfunctions. When my colleague arrives in the morning, she plugs her L560 into her dockingstation, which is connected to two screens. One via VGA port, one via Display Port. Everything ran fine, stable and without any errors for several weeks. Last Wednesday, when she docked her L560, her laptop's screen turned black...and all the other screens stayed black as well. There's backlighting and when you unplug their cables, the screens will, at once, display the "no signal" blah blah, but there's no way of getting a picture. If you undock the L560, its screen won't turn back on either, requiring a reboot. This error is reproducable now. The only workaround we have found, is to undock the L560 and reboot it, meanwhile unplug all both monitors from the docking station, then dock the L560 and THEN plug the screens back in. This works fine, but obviously we'd love to find a solution for this issue. Thanks for any help,Daniel
More repliesSo last night I plugged an external DVD drive directly into my USB port on my hp p030nr. When I plugged it in, it instantly shut off. Kind of made a spark sound. Now the laptop won't work at all. Did the hold the button for so and so time and unplugged everything. Nothing worked. Also when I plug in the chord there's no light indicating that there's power. So I'm wondering what I need to do to fix this? Like buy a new motherboard or if a fuse just blew on the motherboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.
I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.
Any suggestions ?
Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.
I think I accidently did a factory reset on my dell laptop which is lika a reformat with my external harddrive still plugged in. Now it doesnt show up in my computer but its in my hardware window in the control panel and it also appears in the safe removal thing. It's name has change to "WD".
Is there anyway of getting the files back and how much do you think it would cost to get them back ?
I have a HP Elite book laptop which is plugged into an HP docking station.
For about 3 years now it has been fine and running 2 monitors from the docking station, but recently one of the monitors is flickering quite badly.
I've tried swapping the monitor, different cables etc to rule out monitor and cable issues, which only leaves it is one of the following:
Laptop
docking station
or display settings
But Now I done know what to try or do????
I have an E420 Thinkpad and I install the critical update for battery firmware. However it failed and stated, "The tool was unable to update the battery firmware due to an internal error"...and then it automatically rebooted. Once it rebooted, I now get a DOS warning (on initial boot) "this system does not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo....." and I have to hit escape to continue. When it boots up, I get a battery icon that shows either "plugged in and charging" with an x imbedded in the icon. The laptop does not recognize the battery. Even though it was in good condition and geniune....the laptop will not operate without the power plug attached. I have tried to re-run the firmware update from the update tool, but to no success. Please fix this glitch as I can no longer use my laptop as intended. God bless you!
I have diagnosed the problem as the system not recognizing a legit battery. I took out my lenvo Li-ion 55++ extended battery with logo and serial and replaced it with lenovo 25++ battery with logo and serial. It seems that lenovo is trying to **bleep** down on the secondary market for batteries but have included their own batteries. This is absurd and should be taken off immediately. Even if, I chose to use a battery that is not branded lenovo I believe that it may be against the law to limit functionality of competitor brands. If I am mistaken I apologize; howver, I have two lenovo branded batteries and one gives me a bios warning of not being genuine and the other is fine. I pray for the Lord's help in this matter.
1 more repliesI am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.
The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.
I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.
Anyway to resolve this?
I recently had my computer wiped clean and had Windows 10 reinstalled. Had all my file, etc. moved to separate hard drive and then had them put back. All went smoothly I'm told. When at home I plug a 24" monitor (which has no speakers so I got separate plug-in speakers) (Asus) into my laptop. Before the reinstall when the laptop was connected to the monitor and I was viewing only on the monitor, the speakers would work. Now the only speakers I can get to work are the laptop speakers. How can I reconnect the separate speakers that are connected to my 24" monitor? I've read the "old" solutions from several years ago that are posted here on the HP Discussion Board, but nothing worked. Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi, How do you connect them now ? If HDMI, please check the speaker icon and turn HDMI sound on (a) Right click the speaker icon,(b) Select Playback devices(c) Right click HDMI Sound and Enable. Regards.
1 more repliesI have brand new X200 which I have built from scratch using latest drivers from the Lenovo site. I find that when I plug the mains power cable into the laptop, the screen 'judders' from left to right. On battery this problem does not appear. Any ideas..?
excluding a hardware short since the poser socet is terribly close to the LCD connector, your ThinkVantage Power Manager may be causing this as it readjuests the power profile. Tweak PM to see if it makes a differency by fleatteing or createing a new profile with identical settings regardless of AC or power then observe the issue.

I am getting horrible pings around 1000ms and I tried loading speedtest.net but gave up after a minute. My wifi performs much better but I am getting some weird system stuttering when I use the internet while listening to music on my hard drive or watching videos off my hard drive. The audio cuts out awfully. I was hoping I could clear that issue up by switch to ethernet but since the router is on another floor running a cable isn't an option.
just wondering

1 more repliesLast year, I ordered and installed a Lenovo 19" Flat-Panel monitor (and driver) for my T-61p ThinkPad. Recently, as a contractor working on an IBM project, I was provided with an R61 ThinkPad and HP 1740 monitor. The monitor driver that came with the R61 allows me to extend my desktop displays across the R61 screen plus the monitor screen as one contiguous desktop spread across the 2 screens. The driver that came with my Lenovo 19" monitor only gives me the option of duplicating my T61 desktop screen on my external monitor. Can I extract/copy the driver from the R61 and install it on the T61? Or download a free version of the "extended desktop" driver from Lenovo, IBM, or somewhere else? I've searched the Lenovo site but found no references to driver downloads.

Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.
My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.
I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.
I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.
Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

so I have this hdmi cable that plugs into the DVI on my external monitor. I did get the screen to show up just on the external monitor and that's it. Now, when I boot up my lap top I get black screen on both monitors. Uh oh. I've unpugged the monitor, batter, all that stuff. Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.
If you booted up without the external connected, it likely switched the laptop screen to now be the main screen. Just go back in and double check which one is set to main.
I run dual screens on my laptop but leave the laptop screen as main. My external is a smaller screen than my laptops 17 inch screen. It's a portable 15 inch USB screen.
I on occasion boot up my laptop without the external connected. Having the laptop screen as the main screen helps in this situation.

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
I have a problem with my S1 in that if I boot it up, nothing appears on the screen, no promt no loading screen nothing. However if I plug a monitor in it the display appears on the monitor (laptop screen will still be blank) if I press FN & F5 nothing happens.
I hadnt made any changes, just hadnt used it for a while, last time i used it was on a big screen.
Can anyone help, its driving me mad?
Cheers
Simon.
Hi,
I would recommend you to contact a servicepartner from toshiba, since the problem of your machine maybe just a loose cable is.
I had a friend with the same problem and they refitted the displaycable, after refitting everything was OK.

Hi I have lenovo ideapad y y500 with 650m sli, which originally had windows 8 but then I updated to windows 8.1 and used the fix for GPU bios provided by this forum. The issue is that both my external and laptop monitors go black when I connect external monitor to my laptop with vga cable.I have had this issue since I updated nvidia driver back in the middle of january. (befor the update it worked fine I had no issues). I only used external monitor occasionally so I decided to wait for nvidia to fix the problem (rolling back to previous nvidia driver version did not help). Well now after 3 new version the problem persists. I tried using the hot key on my keyboard to change between 4 different monitor-laptop setups (only laptop, only monitor, resize..) and it did not help. I tried recording my laptop screen when I pluged in the external monitor and the video is normal (it isn't black). I then opend nvidia control panel to see if it recognises external monitor and recorded the screen. My external monitor (samsung) was recognised.Click for video on youtubeIn between black flashes i pluged in/out the external monitor.Translation for "zaslon na prenosniku" : laptop's screen. So any idea how to resolve this problem ? Thanks in advance.
More repliesI would like to know (if its possible) to add an External monitor along with my laptop Monitor and to be able too have Both running a different window application at the same time while using the laptop mouse/touch pad.
No.When you connect an external monitor to a laptop it disables the laptop display by default.
1 more repliesHey,
I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.
Any suggestions?
It is somehow strange.
Can you switch between LCD and external display using FN+F5 key combination?
If you can switch to LCD only is everything OK again?
I have a "Digital video input (DVI)" on the back of a LCD Flat Panel Monitor, although i use the old fashion monitor -to- computer type of cord.
What use is the Digital video input (DVI)? My video card just has the old fashion output for a monitor connection. I am thinking if i get a new video card for my computer that has a DVI output, i could connect the computer to the LCD monitor DVI input...and get a better picture. True?
thanks ahead of time
Yes. DVI will give you a clearer, faster picture than VGA will.
Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more
The laptop our family shares recently had its monitor broken. It displays half of the screen, but will not stop shaking. I have it hooked up to an external monitor, but I am unable to use it to display the laptop screen without changing the display settings via the laptop. Is there some command I can use to set the external monitor to display the laptop screen? Or do I need to replace the laptop screen?
I have an new R series laptop and the monitor was recently craked. Is it possible to set up and run an external monitor if I'm having difficulty seeing anything on the broken screen?
Yes I think your VGA port is on the side just connect the monitor and press FN and F7 keys together this should switch the video over to the monitor
3 more repliesHello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue. The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help. I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine. Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't. Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?
Hi, cftech
My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.
Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,
Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Each time I try to use my 120 Gb Western Digital HDD, once in a while it stops working, as if I unplugged it. When I am copying files to it or from it or editing something on it, sooner or later, it will stop and give me this message:
"Cannot copy _____________: Cannot find specified file
Make sure you specify the correct path and file name"
or
"Cannot copy_____________: Cannot read from source disk"
The only solution I've found is unplugging and replugging it in. This problem is happening very often now, and I've already tried formatting it. Please help.
USB or Firewire connection?
Is the external case using a power adapter or is it being powered by the connection cable alone?

Switching to an external monitor (AOC brand) from the built-in utility of the X201 (Fn+F7) works fine from startup. However, on wake-up, the monitor will flicker so bad it is almost unreadable, even though it had been connected just fine. Changing the monitor settings seems to have no effect. Re-booting the X201 cures the problem. I have a good quality VGA connector between the X201 and monitor and am not using the Ultrabase.
Have you tried this machine with some other external LCD?
9 more repliesI have a SONY laptop running Windows XP. Some months ago, maybe a year or so, I connected the laptop to my wall TV and ran some programs, with no problems.
I am trying to do the same thing again, but can't get it to work. The wall TV displays the what the laptop shows, but only the background. I can change backgrounds, and the wall TV follows very nicely. But there is no cursor, and I can't open anything.
Now I am running a dual O.S. using Linux Ubuntu. When I switch to this O.S., everything on the wall TV works perfectly. I open and close and run anything.
I wonder if there is a little box somewhere that I must click to get this thing working with Windows XP?
it maybe the resolution setting on the PC or in the adapter settings its possible seeing the TV as a 2nd extended screen
goto Go to Start> Control Panel> Display icon> Settings tab> Advanced button> there maybe a setting for the screen, extending etc
Hi, I have an old laptop that I have installed Puppy Linux on, it works fine except that my monitor doesn't work. So I plug in an external one, but its a bad setup because the laptop needs to be open. I was wondering if I could take the monitor off the laptop. Would the computer still work? The model is an old Toshiba 1100.
Thanks
Ned

I have a ThinkPad T500 type 2055-RH2. If you need any other information, feel free to ask. Thank you in advance for your help,emerald000
Anyone wants to help me?
5 more repliesThis happens as soon as the VGA adapter is plugged in. Unplugging it does not turn the laptop screen back on. Toggling with the function keys does nothing. Since I cannot see anything I cannot try to adjust/correct display settings (or do anything for that matter, other than turn the laptop off by holding power key down).
The second display works (tested with a different laptop).
History: The external display worked fine with this laptop. We had a power failure yesterday which turned it off. The screen toggled to the laptop successfully (or I did, with the function keys--I don't remember) and I continued working. When power returned I started running into this issue. I reinstalled the display drivers from the original manufacturer disc but the problem persists.

NVIDIA? MCP79MVL, GeForce? 8200M G, Shared
External display: Acer LCD, AL 1916C
To shut down properly hit the Winkey, then the right arrow, then Enter.
This may be as simple as capacitors overcharged. Shut down, unplug, remove battery. Hold power button down for 20 secs.
Do same for monitor.
Then try.
Have already updated the Bios on the computer as well as installed the recent firmware update available for the docking station. Any other suggestions?
More repliesHello, External monitors connected to L560 flicker from time to time. It's like loosing connection and then coming back.it happens multiple times in a short while and it's annoyingsometimes the connection is lost for a longer period and the windows on secondary can't be accessedwhen I lock the computer and unlock after an hour, all the windows from the secondary monitor are moved to laptop's displaysometimes the connection is lost and I have to unplug the cable and put it back to detect the monitor again.I have Windows 7 with latest updates (firmware and Windows).I tested multiple monitors: a few Lenovo monitors, a Dell and a NEC. The monitors and cables used work correctly with other devices (laptops and desktops). The problem appear using VGA and mini DP. I noticed that others have flickering issues with L560.
More repliesHi, I am really need help. Trying many ways but nothing helps.
My laptop doesn't recognize my external monitor.
I was trying to connect monitor to my friend's dell laptop (he have smaller laptop, but very similar with mine) and all works just instantly after connect.
At the same time, on my laptop external monitor was work after many actions with drivers, uefi, etc. And in the end I don't understand what factors can help me in past to connect with monitor. But I can say, that external monitor works at first time after install drivers and rebooting pc, I think.
Recently I reinstall my operating system and trying to connect external monitor again - as I expect - laptop doesn't recognize it again. To resolve it, I am install the drivers, trying actions, that helps me, how i think, in past. In the end - nothing works and laptop doesn't recognize the external monitor again, like in past.

I just bought a laptop with a shattered screen. It's an HP Pavilion dv2315nr. Nothing custom or altered. It works fine, but with the screen broken, and me unable to afford a replacement yet, it's basically just a desktop for now.
My problem is that I've been trying to use it with an LCD monitor. I hook it up, but the picture doesn't automatically transfer to the LCD like older laptops did. HP designed it so that you have to press the FN+F4 keys to switch to an external dispay. No matter how many times I try, it won't switch to the LCD. I've tried it at various points during the startup, and varied the ways I press the key combo. It did switch a couple times the first day I had it, but Windows Vista has a password on it so I couldn't go farther. When I restarted to try and do a system restore, it switched back to the laptop's display.
I need this thing to immediately switch to the LCD when it turns on so I can do a system restore and use it until I get a replacement screen. To do a system restore, I have to press F11 immediately while starting up. I've done that, waited a few minutes, and tried to switch to the LCD. It won't do it. And I can't think of anything else to try.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
