I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
Please, please can any one HELP ME!!
I have my daughter?s Dell Dimension 4600, Model DMC, MTC2. I?m trying to Install a Second hard Drive. No matter what I do the Computer Boots up but does not Recognize the Second Hard Drive. Both hard Drives are IDE.
Ok, this is what I have been doing. My main option is to reinstall Windows XP Pro OS to the New hard Drive 250GB. It came with an 80GB. It has to recognize the 250GB Hard Drive before I can do anything at all.
The Original 80GB Hard Drive had the Jumper as Cable Select. When I put in the 250GB Hard Drive I made it the Primary Slave -Jumpers ? Dual Slave . The 80GB I removed the Jumper from Cable Select to Dual Master. Both are Western Digital. I checked them with the Western Digital, Quick Install Guide that came with an earlier Boxed Western Digital Hard Drive.
Connected the Dual Drive Ultra ATA/66/100 Cable. This came with the Machine. Blue to System Board. Black to Primary Master and Grey to Primary Slave.
Hooked everything up, started the Dell Dimension. WOW!! It Booted up OK. Checked My Computer. The 80GB old hard drive as Primary Master was showing but not the 250GB Slave. I go into Disk Management. Surprise! Surprise!! The DVD/CD drive was showing. Wait for it. I couldn?t believe it. Both hard drives were not showing!!
I have moved the Jumpers to both Cable Select ? Both not showing in Disk Management.
Moved Jumpers ? 80GB back to Cable Select as Primary Master and kept the 250 as Dual Slave with ... Read more

Hi I'm Mark. I'm having a problem when it comes with my notebook [dell inspiron 600m] and my external hard disk [WD Elements 250gb]. when I connected the 5 pin cable of the external hard disk to the usb port of the notebook, the connection is seem to unstable or on-and-off, therefore making file copying impossible. The external hard drive and the notebook is in good condition, although I can't really figure out what seems to be the problem. I am also having a theory that this might be a power supply problem. I would be very grateful to someone who can help me about this matter..

My friend and I are having trouble with his Dell 4600 Dimension. It's acting up badly and we think it's due to malicious spyware or something similar. So we want to format the hard drive, but the problem is he has none of the original CDs that came with it, including his WinXP disk. We want to try putting Win2000 on it, but we have no idea how that might turn out. I've never formatted a Dell before and I don't know how picky it is to that kind of stuff. Can anyone lend us some sage advice?

In my daughters computer - The original Hard Drive, which I made the Primary Master had the Jumper at Cable Select - First pins. I removed it to Dual Master Two Centre Pins - 5 & 6. The Primary Slave to 3 & 4, the Second Pair from right. Both are Western Digital. The New Hard Drive is 250GB. The original is 80GB. The Bios shows Primary Master - HARD DRIVE - But the Primary Slave shows - OFF.
What do I have to do to to get the Bios to show the Primary Slave as it shows the Primary Master.
Please HELP!

Set the original drive at master then the new d250GB drive at slave, here is some info here: Jumper settings Unless this is a Dell thing you cannot have dual master hard-drives, one, with the operating system will be the master, all others are slaves.

Hello, All.

I'm in the process of repairing and making a bunch of usable used computers for financially disadvantaged families for Christmas. In this regard, one of the computer "bones" recently acquired is a Dell Dimension E510 with the hard drive missing.

I have put a new herd drive into this Dell Dimension E510 computer and I also have. a Dell Win XP w/SP-2 CD disk that came with the machine.

I want to install the Dell Win XP OS from this disk and I'm wondering if I have to do anything special when booting up from the CD and doing a new install of the OS (and Dell Utility files?). For instance:

1. May (or should?) I format the new HD as an single partitioned HD and, if I do, will the Dell Win XP disk automatically handle the formatting and the creation of the hidden partition for the Dell Utilities? Or, during the formatting process, must I reserve (create?) some small amount of space for a hidden partition for the Dell utilities and then the installation process will install Win XP in the main partition and the Dell Utilities in the smaller hidden partition?

2. Once the hidden partition is created, what are the Utilities/programs that Dell installs into this partition and how is the hidden partition accessed once it is installed?

3. Any other suggestions or hints in these regards would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you in advance for any help and assistance you might offer in these regards.

One partition is fine . . you do not need a partition for the Dell Utilities

2. Once the hidden partition is created, what are the Utilities/programs that Dell installs into this partition and how is the hidden partition accessed once it is installed?

No need to worry about the utilities . .

You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here:

Dell Operating System Redirector | Dell

After you have the Operating System instaleld, install SP3 then all drivers

I like to get the newest drivers from Dell:

You can go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers. Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to the desktop and double click to install

On the list of drivers, click on the driver file:

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hi there..I have a 250GB SATA HD drive and trying to load XP on to it...all that happens is that the files load from the XP CD onto the HDD but the menu screen does not appear...I can view the files when logged in from a IDE drive but the whole XP software is not on the SATA drive.I have seen other advice which states I require chipset drivers to load onto my system from floppy drive after pressing F6 for RAID drives present?? The drivers downloaded are 7.5 MB...a bit big to go on a floppy!!Any help please would be much appreciated..The system is an HP xw9300 computer.many thanks in advance.

Answer:Installing XP on 250GB SATA drive

You should have a Floppy Disc with the Raid Driver on It to enable XP to see the drive.Setup will ask If you have a disc for the Raid Driver. Take a look on the CD for Raid Drivers & how to create a Floppy Disc, if not have a look on your Motherboard's website.Regards.

We removed old disks from my reliable but sluggish Dell Pentium 4 and installed a new Hitachi 250GB drive. Windows XP installed fine, but the system will not reboot after we install SP2. Tried twice, rolling back to the previous configuration.

Tried installing SP1 (fine) and several critical updates THEN SP2, but same problem; after the "successful" install the system must be restarted, but now it will not boot. Instead we see the message saying Windows cannot start, and giving options for booting in safe mode (this works), booting in safe mode with networking (does NOT work). We have tried F8 at startup & tried Debug mode, but this just took us back the same menu (Safe, Safe w/networking, Last known good, etc.).

We have already checked for BIOS updates, and found none available.

Any ideas?

Answer:Installing Windows XP on new Hitachi 250GB drive, won't reboot after SP2

Update on this problem: with the restart on failure disabled we were able to proceed a bit further, and have now disabled our AVG virus s/w, and rolled back again to run a disk check... before trying SP2 again.

Doing some work on my mother in laws computer, and her old hard drive was completely fried. I'm currently installing the drive and am running into some issues.  I have the pin settings on the IDE harddrive set to Single, as this is the only hard drive on the PC. Doing a IDE drive diagnostic test confirms the presence and recognition of the new hard drive, however, when i attempt to -load the drice from the Normal, Primary Master Drive, IDE CD-ROM device or boot to utility partition I am greeted with "strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for set up utility." The phone technician at Dell informed her that she would simply need to plug and play this new hard drive and it would be a more or less automated install. I am confident that the settings are correct in what I have done. I do however, wonder how this hard drive installation can simply be 'plug and play, as the utility partition would be on the old fried hard-drive and not the new one. Does the hard drive need to have the OS installed from the CD or am I simply missing something silly. Thanks!

Answer:Installing new Hard Drive on a dell PC.

Well, it's a new hard drive, so there is nothing to boot into. You need to install an OS onto the drive from a CD. The new HD does not have the Utility on it. Depending on what disks you have have, you might be able to put it back on before you install windows.

That sounds fine to me, but do you have a broadband internet connection? SP2 is pretty large for dial-up. After you install windows, go to and make sure you download not only SP2 but all available updates and patches.

Our 580 MT is 6 years old so time to instal a new Hard Drive before the original shows any signs of failing.
I have a Seagate 1 TB SSHD to become the main drive (& keep the original - now 6 year old - HDD in place as a Data Drive),
My plan is to put the new drive in the second Bay, clone the Drive, & then simply swap the SATA cables so the "new" drive becomes the Main drive without having to alter anything in the BIOS
Of course this requires a third SATA cable attached to the Motherboard
I checked inside the Tower today, & as should be, two of the SATA sockets are in use, (Numbered 1 & 2)
Sorry for what might be a Dumb Question, but although the sockets marked 1, 2, & 4 are black in colour, number 3 is white - is there any significance to this?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated.

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Answer:My dell inspiron 15-3552's hard drive is not installing.

You'll need to more precisely describe the problem - are you replacing a faulty drive, and having trouble physically installing it, or is the drive missing from setup (f2 at powerup) -- or is it not showing up when you're installing the operating system?

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 and I needed to know if there was a step by step guide somewhere showing exactly how to remove the old hard drive and install the new one?

I am useing an old system and I don't have any systems like adobe or anything like that to read instructions and because this system that I am using now is so old, I cannot download it either.

I thought I saw a website somewhere that gave step by step instructions including pictures but I don't remember what it was.

I have already installed new RAM but I have NO CLUE on where to begin when installing the hard drive and I don't want to mess anything up. The only thing that I remember is that I will need a phillips screwdriver

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didn’t recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldn’t work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldn’t).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I haven’t given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether it’s fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,

I bought a Seagate hybrid hard drive listed at 250GB. when I look at the disk using Acronis disk Director it show the disk size as 110GB. I know the actual size is usually smaller than the listed size but more than 50% smaller? Seems bogus to me.

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

I have a corrupt HD, so I'm planning on replacing it.
But I have been told if I do that I must also buy a new OS. As the disk that came with the computer is specific to the hard drive in it, or something to that effect.
Is this true, or will the disk that Dell sent with the computer work to install the OS once the new hard drive is in.
I'd hate to get a new hard drive in, just to find out that I now need to buy a OS as well.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 (4 years old) with a CD RW drive and a CD/DVD read only drive. The CD RW drive works just fine.
I have never used the DVD drive, but now I am trying to install a new graphics software program from a DVD and the drive does not recognize it. I have gone through all the troubleshooting options, but nothing helps. The computer keeps telling me the drive is working fine.

The drive also does not recognize CDs. I tried working with the "Autoplay" adjustments but I'm not sure which type of file to pick since this isn't music or video. I tried an interesting variety, but nothing helped. When I put the DVD in, the light flickers three or four times and goes out. When I click on the drive it just says, "please insert a disk into the drive," even though the DVD is already in there. The drive is a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E. I looked for a driver update on their website but found nothing.

It seems the computer sees it as a CD drive, but shows its location as zero (0). I tried deactivating the other CD RW drive which is shown as in location (1) but that made no difference.

I am not computer illiterate but also not a computer tech expert, and relatively poor, so I want to be careful not to inactivate my entire computer (which is, of course, out of warranty) trying to fix the problem.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here:

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here:

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hello, I just got a new Dell Dimension E521 with Vista as the operating system. Vista Stinks! For most programs, including video and audio from XP Service Pack 2 Vista doesn't recognize drivers that were fine with XP Service Pack 2.
Even Sonic and Roxio, which are installed on the damn thing give these same problems.

My internet connection is also no better at all and was outright disabled with a message "something has caused Microsoft Internet to stop working" after I tried
to install basic version of Zone Alarm.
Then on reboot it says "unauthorized change made to your license, you must verify your software online". This message come up before the desktop appears and this screen is frozen whether you choose the "verify" or "cancel" option.

Couldn't shut down by any means either, including Control Alt Delete, it wouldn't bring up that window. Had to literally pull the plug and reboot into Safe Mode where I uninstalled Zone Alarm and a couple of other functions that worked perfectly in XP2.

Then I was able to re-boot normally, the message did not come up again.

I hate Vista. Not interested in any "fixes", not worth the trouble. The only fix for Vista is a sledgehammer to the drive!

My hope is this: can I get the hard drive removed and replace it with a clean hard drive that has XP sp2 on it, or am I stuck with this P.O.S. Operating System?

First time poster.

My parents 4600 won't start after a thunderstorm. The monitor, printer/scanner, speakers, cable modem, and cpu were plugged into a surger protector.

The storm knocked out the circuit breakers at the main box. After flipping them back on, everything powers back up except the Dell 4600 Tower.

I do some searches and read how the PSU on the 4600 models stink. First I notice that inside the tower on the mother board the green light does NOT light up.

I read where others have replaced the PSU on the Dell 4600 with a AGII 480W SATA ATX POWER SUPPLY.

I replace the PSU with the aforementioned PSU and the green light on the mother board now lights up, however nothing else comes on, i.e. the fan, hard drive, etc.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

I also apologize in advance if I am in the wrong forum, or have missed threads where I may have gotten the help I am looking for.
Having said that, I recently inherited a Dell Dimension 4600i Desktop XP Home Edition SP3, Pentium 4 (2.6 GHz), 2.5 GB Ram, Seagate HDD C 80 GB (25 GB free space), added WD HDD F 80 GB (70 GB free space) (OS on Drive C).
The issue is that this computer was given to me and the previous owner did not have any of the Dell CDs that originally came with the computer.
It has been my experience that eventually the C drive will crash.
I want to mitigate the loss of of my OS as best as I can.
What do you suggest I do to create a recovery CD or anything else given the absence of the original CDs.
Although I am not a super expert in all of this, I feel somewhat comfortable working with the BIOS, disk management, but NOT DOS commands.
If it comes down to a suggestion to copy a whole lot to the F drive, I don't really want to copy ALL of the C to the F because in that case, I will have two drives that are nearly full.
If it is a matter of just copying OS files or boot files, etc. that will be fine.
I am open to all suggestions, and I will need very detailed instructions.
Thank you all again.

System is a dell dimension 4600. Came to me dead. User said it'd been making some funny noises for the last week or so.

I tested p/s & sure enough it was dead. I ordered another & put in machine. Booted up once. RPC errors & the like shut it back down very quickly. I knew it had viruses so I left it shut down over the weekend to deal w/ on Mon.

This morning plugged back in and it started to boot & shut right back down. Started defined as I heard the p/s come on. I took out RAM & reseated one by one. I do get Dell lights on the back of computer indicated memory not installed am I to assume that the ram might have been taken out with the p/s? The ram is PC2700 and I have ordered some. I don't have another pc that will take this ram to test.

Any suggestions on how I can further test machiné? I already tested out processor. heatsync. I test p/s again and that is still good.

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.

It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

What OS is on the PC.

Does anyone know how many milliamps this device draws?

The "Technical Specification" provides plenty of info but does not specify the actual current. All it says is that it is powered directly from the USB port. But I need to know exactly what the peak ma of this device is.

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4600 using the WinXP Home System Recovery disk. I'm not sure if that disk was the one that came with that computer or not, but the reformatting procedure was going fine until the screen changed to a black screen with "Gateway" displayed on it in large white lettering with a white scrolling progress bar that animated for a few seconds, then froze. I figured that the reformatting process would take a long time, so I walked away, but several hours later, I found that the screen hadn't changed at all and the computer didn't seem to be doing anything aside from just sitting there, displaying that same image.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with the computer itself (e.g., I'm not using the correct System Recovery disc)?

EDIT: I almost forgot -- I'm planning on donating this computer, so I'm not concerned with losing any data on it.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem yet?

Dell T7400 with RAID: bluescreen when installing Windows XP 32-bit
Please help me with installing Windows XP on Dell T7400 with H/W RAID controller on 4 15k SAS harddrives. When installing windows I hit F6 to add optional RAID drivers and load this drivers using floppy drive, but Windows crashes anyway. The same is without loading optional drivers.
I have the same problem. Trying to install the XP with a Dell provided CD (green Reinstallation CD with SP2) doesn't crash Windows, but it doesn't find any hard disks and can't continue.

Answer:Solved: Dell T7400 with RAID: bluescreen, or no hard disks when installing Windows XP

Problem solved!

I downloaded the LSI SAS1068 driver from the LSI site and used that in the installation process.

I'm currently running Windows Vista 64 bit. My hard drive setup is as follows:

C: 70 GB Raptor 1. (The OS drive... System Boot, Page Files, Programs, etc.)
D: 70 GB Raptor 2. (Music, Photos, a few programs.)
E: 500 GB HDD 1. (Empty)
F: 500 GB HDD 2. (Empty)

I would like to do the following...

C: 500 GB HDD 1: (OS drive... System Boot, Pages Files, Programs, etc.)
D: 500 GB HDD 2: (Extra storage)
E: 70 GB Raptor 1: (Music Files)
F: 70 GB Raptor 2: (Picture Files)

What I'd like to do is make one of the 500 GB HDDs the C drive, and reinstall my Vista onto it, and reformat the 70 GB Raptor that my OS is currently on. I've backed everything up that I need to, and I've said my goodbyes to anything I can stand to lose. I just need to know what steps I would need to take to be able to accomplish this. If anyone could help me with that, it'd be much appreciated.

ADD: Just to clarify, I DO have the original OEM disc of the version of Vista that is installed on this comp.
ADD: Also, they are SATA drives.

Hi All,

I really nned some help with my Dell dimension 4600 desktop pc. My 120gb Hard drive started to make a clicking sound and the pc would not boot up, i guessed the drive has died. So i purchased a nw 320gb Western Digital Pata drive (ide connection). took out old drive and straight swapped it with new one. when i bought pc from dell around 6,7 yrs now it came with xp home edition. i don't have the original disks but i have an xp pro disk.
after fitting new h/drive in i pressed power button but keep gettin the message "F1 TO RE BOOT, F2 FOR SETUP UTILITY"
removin cr2032 battery for 30 mins from m/board (power cable pulled out" then tried but same message.

i have removed all the ide connections and re inserted but to no AVAIL.

Could it be my xp pro boot up cd is faulty?, i have put the cd in laptop(which has vista home prem on it) and it loads up to the main xp screen so i assume it is a bootable disk.

on the problem dimension machine i have 2 cd rom drives and a floppy drive if thats of any help.

I would really appreciate some kind soul/s help on this. my kids have no pc and i can't afford a new one at the moment hence why i spent the ?50 on a new hard drive.

I'll just use this form and add some info.

Please provide the following information:

* Make and model of your computer (assuming the PC was purchased at a retail store, etc)
Dell Dimensions 4600
* When you access Device Manager, what audio device is listed?
Quite a few..., not sure if this could be the issue

* When you access Control Panel -> Sounds, what is your default audio device (if any)?
SB Audigy 2 Audio [FEC0]
* Have you made any recent hardware changes?
* Have you made any recent software changes?
Yes, I have tried to uninstall the consoles/and tried updating the drivers. (Through Creative and through Windows)

Alright so this computer is pretty old, but works pretty damn well, besides the audio of course. When I got it, it came with the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 sound card. Couple days ago I turned my computer back on (after it not being used for a long time) and found the sound was gone. (I can't recall if I did anything to hinder this)

I've tried to update/reinstall the drivers and any consoles associated with this, but no luck. Could it be possible that another sound driver is being used at this time instead of the intended Audigy 2? Looking at the pictures and everything, it looks okay.

Mute is unchecked, SB Audigy 2 is selected as my audio device.

Hi there

I've recently come into a handful of old 2.5" hard drives from the upgrade of some EPOS systems. Most of the drives work fine, but two of them, both 250gb nominal capacity (a Hitachi HTE543225A7A384, and a TOSHIBA MK2576GSXZ) both show up as 111gb in Windows (7 Ultimate 64-bit).

PassMark DiskCheckup (under the Hidden Areas - HPA/DCO tab) shows that the Max User LBA for these drives is set to about half that of the Max Native LBA and the Max Disk LBA which would explain the discrepancy. However; when I try and use the "Modify HPA/DCO" option to reset the Max User LBA to the Max Native LBA it just comes up with "Error setting new Max User LBA".

Anybody got any ideas or know of a tool that might help?

I have a Windows XP desktop and want to add a second hard drive. The hard drive that is on my computer is an EIDE 80gb. I plan to install a Maxtor DiamondMax 60GB 7200rpm EIDE using the slave connector on the primary leg of the IDE controller cable. The secondary IDE leg has a CD-RW and a DVD drive. I know how to jumper and physically install the new drive.

I need detailed instructions on what to do once I have the hard drive physically installed. I understand that I will boot up and then run "Disk Management" to set up the new hard drive. I have a copy of "Partition Magic 7.0". Should I use that instaed of "Disk Management"?

The new drive will be used for data only. I want to set up the new drive as at least four drives. I assume they will be D, E, F and G. I want to use the new D drive for general data (no more than 4GB), the new E drive for photos (probably 20GB), the new F drive for creating CD images (about 2GB) and the new G drive for scratch, like virtual memory for Photoshop.

Where can I find instructions on how to do this as well as information as to what kind of partitions will best suit my needs? I understand that I will boot up and then run "Disk Management" to set up the new hard drive. I have a copy of "Partition Magic 7.0". Should I use that instead of "Disk Management"?

I have built my own computer with a 20.4g h/d. I think I partitioned it to c & d. To get the files from my old drive to the new on I installed it. The settings are now new drive: c & e old drive D and cd is e. I copied the files over and took the old drive out. The new machine will not boot up now. I posted this on the operating board and was informed that you can not just install a second drive like this. I am now going to have to format and reinstall to the new machine. Once I have done this how do I install a second drive to get my files without messing everything up again.
Many thanks.

Recently bought and hooked up a new hard drive. Turned on the computer and it displayed the normal "please insert bootable media" message. I didn't have an XP disk lying around so I opted to throw in a Hiren's Boot CD I had from before just because. Apparently, I loaded a mini version of XP on it briefly. Now when I restart my computer the new harddrive displays no message, just a black screen. Is this bad?

Also, is it possible to make XP recovery disks without using the old hard drive?

What to do after installing new hard drive
I have rep[laced my hard drive as the old one stopped working properly, this seemed a very simple operation but now I can't get the computer to run.
I have the original discs that came with the Dell inspiron 1720 and after swiching on the computer with the new hard drive I checked in f2 to see if it was recognised and it was.
So I then inserted the Operating System reinstallation Windows Vista Home premium 32 bit dvd and by using the f12 key booted the computer from the DVD.
It seemed to run ok until it reached the Installing Windows screen where it seemed to run perfectly through all the stages giving each a tick as they were completed, then switched off and back on again eventually getting back after some seconds to the Installing Windows screen with all the stages still ticked and a line at the bottom of the page saying Completing installation and 3 running dots. And there it has stayed even after leaving it on all night.
So my question is am I doing something wrong? Should I load the Drivers and Utilities Disc first?
What loked to be a simple operation has turned into a real mess which I have no idea how to resolve but hopefully one of you will know what needs to be done.
Thanks in advance and best wishes to al for a happy and healty new year

Hi all,

I have recently come into possession of a perfectly working 80GB IDE Seagate hard drive, that has been tested and refurbished.

I would like to install it, as a secondary hard drive onto my computer, so I can install Ubuntu onto the second hard drive and leave Windows XP and all my primary data on the primary hard drive.

I work in the IT industry, but alas I am in the sales/service department, so I am only 80% cluey when it comes to actual hardware configuration.

I opened up my case and I have a 200GB Western Digital HDD in the box currently set as a master (as it is the only one there atm).. however, on the sticker on the HDD describing the jumper settings it says that there is a jumper setting "Master w/ Slave"... would I need to set the jumpers to this to then hook up this 80GB Seagate as a Slave? I have checked the jumper settings on the Seagate and it is on Slave mode. Or can I just leave the WDL on "Master" and have the Seagate as "Slave" and it will all work ok?

Also, would I need to configure the BIOS to let it "see" the second hard drive, or will the PC automatically recognise that there is an extra HDD plugged in...?

Any help or suggestions would be great!

Btw, Linux ppl... I realise that in theory that you can install Linux onto the same HDD as Windows.. but I would like to keep it all simple and separate in case I don't like anything or in case anything happens to either.

Thanks again!

My system informed me prior to ultimate bail that the hard drive was bad. I purchased a new hard drive and tried every possible configuration from Master/Cable Select/Slave to no avail. Please advise as to what I am doing wrong. Thank you.
